M72 World Tour

metallica tour europeo

We told you about our new album 72 Seasons , so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!

Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only), and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation, the M72 tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums – we’ll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences , ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica .

In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code . If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in ’23 and ’24 with YOU!

Show 1 Support Europe: Architects & Mammoth WVH ** Show 2 Support Europe: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills * Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills play Show 1 in Paris, Architects & Mammoth WVH play Show 2 in Paris ** Volbeat replaces Architects on Show 1 in Gothenburg

Show 1 Support North America: Pantera & Mammoth WVH *** Show 2 Support North America: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills *** Greta Van Fleet replaces Pantera on show 1 both weekends in Mexico City

Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List

Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.

The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.

In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All   (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from California, US. Formed in 1981, Metallica is considered to be one of the founding bands of thrash metal.

The band was formed after the various members answered a newspaper advertisement placed by drummer Lars Ulrich who was looking for people to jam with. Metallica quickly gained a following from its many gigs in the Los Angeles music scene as its new thrash metal sound picked up increasing numbers of followers.

Metallica’s first three studio albums, Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets, did increasingly well on the US album charts, and eventually, each of these albums would be certified platinum. The band toured frequently in the US and Europe, playing to tens of thousands of fans at a time. Its constant touring resulted in rising popularity throughout the late ’80s.

In 1986, tragedy struck when the band’s tour bus crashed in Sweden and bassist Cliff Burton was killed. After debating whether to continue making music, the band received the blessing of Burton’s family and went on to record its next album …And Justice For All. The release of this album in 1988 saw the band attain its biggest success yet as the album charted at number six in the US and number four in the UK; Metallica also received its first Grammy Award nomination.

The commercial success of the album turned Metallica members into living legends. Each of its subsequent five albums hit the number one spot in the US and has been certified platinum. Tracks such as “Enter Sandman” and “Turn the Page” have become legendary in their own right and have inspired legions of artists.

In 1991, Metallica released its fifth album, self-titled Metallica. Today, this album is recognized as one of the band’s first albums to appeal to a larger mainstream audience with less focus on its traditional thrash metal sound. This album wound up selling over 16 million copies in the US alone.

After this album, Metallica continued to release albums that explored new genres and styles. During the next few years, the band would go on to release Binge & Purge, Load, Reload, Garage, S&M, and St. Anger. Then, in 2008, Metallica returned to its earlier sound with the release of Death Magnetic. This album returned to the band’s metal trash roots and debuted at number one in the US. The album quickly climbed the charts globally, reaching number one on both the Billboard 200 and the European album charts. In addition, this became the fastest-selling album of the year in Australia.

After this, Metallic continued to release albums in the same vein as its original sound, releasing its tenth studio album Hardwired…to Self-Destruct in 2016. This album was released via the band’s own record label, Blackened Recordings. The album’s single “Hardwired” went on to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 charts.

Now the band’s eleventh studio album 72 Seasons is set to be released in April of 2023. In anticipation of the release of its newest album, the band released the single “Lux Æterna” in November 2022.

Metallica has won an impressive nine Grammy Awards and three MTV VMA awards. Its style is influenced by bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Aerosmith, but Metallica itself has gone on to be one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, selling more than 120 million records worldwide.

For those who are looking forward to seeing Metallica live at any of its shows, the band delivers an incredible live experience. Fans flock to stadiums, festivals, and concert halls to watch the group perform dozens of songs spanning its extensive discography. Over the years, Metallica has played over 2,000 shows, traveling to every populated continent in the world. What started out as a small movement in California, has spread globally, earning the group an incredible following of metal fans from countries virtually everywhere.

Metallica’s adrenaline-filled shows aren’t for those who wish to sit back and relax. The band members all deliver their own bold energy to the stage, and the crowd follows suit. Most Metallica shows involve fan interaction, with concert attendees singing, clapping, jumping, and thrashing along to the music. In addition to the incredible power that the band brings to the stage during a show, the audio and visual effects are also second to none. Metallica is known for playing a loud concert, where every beat of the drum, every strum of the bass, and every lyric is felt from head to toe.

Live reviews

A most memorable night as the boys set out to open the new Royal Arena with a bang. And that they did!

From the opening of Hardwired it was clear they were here and they meant business! The most in-your-face opening of a Metallica gig I have ever witnessed. While there were a few noticeable "hiccups" in James' voice it was, to my ears, nothing major. But evidently it prooved to be just that.

James told us he and a few of the others weren't feeling well and about 30 minutes into the show he had a talk with Lars, center-stage, and at this point most of us looked at each-other and thought, "Uh-oh. Something's up. They're gonna cancel..."

James adressed the crowd, saying the band weren't sounding good and that he hated giving us a bad show. He wanted to stop. He asked the crowd outright, if we wanted a make-up show later with Metallica in full force or if they should continue at half mast. The crowd roared a reassuring and supportive "No!" - meaning: It's OK, James. We are here for you. We want you to battle on. We can do this together.

He laughed warmly, thanked the crowd for our support and said, "You asked for it".

They reorganized, changed the set-list and came out again and this time it seemed there was more energy in their performance. They were out to proove that they could do this, illness be damned! And as James asked for the crowds help in singing the lyrics, it didn't feel like all the other times he had done so. This was special. For once, you actually felt as if you were helping James, helping the band, through this ordeal. Together. And it felt mighty good. Sometimes this whole "Metallica-family"-thing gets a bit worn-out and cliché, at least for me. But in that moment I felt it. The kinship. The coming together. And that was a mighty thing. A mighty good thing.

The band soldiered on, ripping into a mighty version of Fade to Black, that hit home a bit more than it used to.

Yes, there was an incident with Kirk during the intro, first missing his cue and then playing false notes, but not one of the critics questioned why. Just prior to Fade Kirk had done a solo thrasing his guitar around. For Fade he was then given another guitar, but the receiver on it cut out leaving him muted. They quickly gave him another guitar, the same he'd used for the solo, which was not tuned to Fade thus producing false notes. He finished the intro and they quickly changed guitars again, this time with a working receiver and in-tune.

It's ok to criticize if the criticism is justified. Factless criticism is just whining.

So they battled on raising the roof with a feroscious rendition of Seek and Destroy and the most pummeling version of Battery I've ever heard. Absolutely blistering.

And closing out with Sandman with the crowd in full roar was just perfect.

It was a truly memorable concert both performance and set-wise. Oh, and they even included Harvester of Sorrow which was a very nice surprise for me.

The stage was beautiful with a built-in screen. And a screen in the ceiling as well. Epic and beautiful.

A memorable night I won't forget as long as I live. As a fan, they did me proud with this one. I just hope James recovers and regains his strenght once again.

Hetfield, rise!

The impatient wait had been going on for months - I booked this show when tickets went on sale back in March or whenever it was, and October had take so long to come around - but finally it was here: Metallica day!

The day started with a trip to the pop-up merch store in London, then onto the O2 for an agonising queue (good thing it's what us Brits do best, apart from moan about it of course) before finally getting in and finding my seat - which, by pure luck, was a superb view. Again, what felt like days, but in reality was only 30-40 mins wait, the lights dimmed, the background music shut off, and the familiar notes of the intro track, "The Ecstasy of Gold", complete with video footage from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", began to ring out, to rapturous roaring and whistling from the 20,000 strong crowd. The hairs on my arms are standing on end just recounting it for this review. And then we were in: full-bore, 100mph, Metallica took to the stage and belted out song after song after song with barely a moment to catch your breath before the next does of thrash metal came your way. "Thrash metal?", I hear you say, "Metallica hasn't been thrash metal since the 80's!". Oh my friend, trust me when I say thrash metal - we had some of the best early work represented tonight, not least with half a dozen track from the new album "Hardwired... To Self Destruct" that included unrelenting riff after riff, from the likes of "Hardwired", "Atlas Rise", "Moth Into Flame", coupled with one of the heaviest tracks they've ever written "Dream No More", plus "Halo on Fire" and "Now That We're Dead". All segmented in-between some of the bands greatest songs; "Seek & Destroy", "Through The Never", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Through The Never", "One", "Sad But True", "Fuel", the obligatory cover, this time from the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling", before ending the show with "Master of Puppets".

Of course, it wasn't the end - back for the encore the intro to "Damage Inc" came on, before they ripped all the way through it, eventually slowing the pace to play the ever-loved "Nothing Else Matters" and finally ending on probably their most well known song "Enter Sandman"

It was a great varied selection of tunes that spans most of their career - the only notable exceptions being there was nothing from "Load", "St Anger" or the previous record "Death Magnetic". But otherwise all the other studio albums were represented. Some guitar and bass doodles from Kirk and Rob, before Rob gave us a wonderful tribute to Cliff by playing "Anesthesia".

If you get the chance to go, then go see this show - it's truly magnificent, from a band with 36 years experience in being the biggest metal band on the planet, and it shows you just why they are. I just wish I had a ticket for tomorrow night too.

We went to a concert in Toronto to see; Volbeat, Avenged Sevenfold, and the show I have been waiting my life to see; Metallica. They all sported the Blue Jays jersey with their names at some point and thanking them for the gifts. The show had a Dj mixing up songs before/between acts from groups like Beastie Boys to Black Sabbath. Volbeat and avenged Sevenfold were great acts my first seeing all. My 16yr old is really into Avenged Sevenfold and was not disapointed. (end of grade 10 present). Volbeat i have heard in passing once and will do my best to spread the word about them.Glad i made it there in time to catch Volbeat if you ever have a chance make sure you catch them! Avenged Sevenfold was everything my 16 year old had told me. Those who missed them may be may be able to catch them soon as they alluded to coming back. They make me glad that metal is carring on to the younger generation these days. "We love Canada, we love you guys you're so nice and you always get us @#$!*&-up!" They were amazed that as Canadians when he made reference to the flag from another country someone was holding up we cheered not booed "cause thats just how nice you all are!"Finally but not least in any way Metallica.First of all their pyrotechniques were amazing boasting two small hot air ballons above them. The stage was set up so everyone had a good view and sported large screens for those further back to follow the rifts as well. At one point they were all on drums together each sporting their own.James Hetfield after noticing a young 8 yr old in the audience made reference to the"...Metallica family, young, 'medium' and old." They played flawlessly and didnt disapoint their fans. My 16 year old was excited to see Metallica and who influenced not only her Mom and friends but the music yet to come out. The screens showed videos like clips from "the unforgiven" to lead up the one of the many big hit songs. The encore was what i was waiting for...the two songs my friends and I have been singing since grade school. What a great venue; no big line up for anything but marchandise. Thanks to all who made the show work:-)

Metallica@RoyalArena03feb2017

Overall it was great. A blast of a concert! What wasn't so great mostly has to do with inexperience among staff of the arena itself, and the fact that it was premiere night on a brand new untried venue. Plus the tech geeks victory over common sense in arena design.

There was trouble with wi-fi connections, which initially meant doors opened 10-20minutes late due to ticket validation.(whiplash experience)

Bar staff initially unaware of validity of drink tickets (VIP-bracelet)

Understaffed bar and merchandise shop in lounge area.

Lounge area cramped. The room could have been 3 times the size to comfortably hold that many people. This was only a problem until early access was given to GA floor, as many went in at that time.

Luggage handling/storage at Royal Arena is a total disaster. There were no oversized lockers. People had to be in possession of an IOS or Android smartphone (not windows compatible) with mobile pay on it, which excludes 10-25% of Danish concertgoers and 100% of foreigners. Redo ASAP! Loose codes and an arena tech was assigned to deal with the issue analogous, but it was too little too late, and will be a reoccurring issue in the future.

Those were - except for luggage - all minor things, and this review has to end on a very positive note with a great shoutout to the crew at CID entertainment for going the full mile to make everyone as comfortable as possible and making everything work on the fly. Thanks guys!

General arena design is also top shelf, and can endure LOUD bands to the extent that no other large scale arena in Denmark can follow. Thumbs up for that!

As for Metallica - James wasn't well. We could hear it; he told us himself too. The crowd wanted it to happen so bad, and it did. I only hope there has been no permanent health damage induced by playing the (almost) full show. Metallica delivers - every single f#$!ing time!

martin-moller-poulse’s profile image

Electrifying as ever with their incredible performance and stage presence, the members of Metallica delivered the goods and more last night with a nice cross section of numbers running the gamut of their colossal catalog! There were occasional pauses to interact and converse with the crowd, but the band segued their way into one song after another the majority of the evening. The night opened up with an intro of the Ecstasy of Gold followed by the title cut off of the band's latest effort Hard Wired to Self Destruct. James Hetfield's vocals were as strong as ever from beginning to end. Kirk Hammett engaged in one brain crushing guitar solo after another, Lars Ulrich brought a great and almost nonstop back beat with his furious drumming and Rob Trujillo provided excellent bass work including a great treatment of the solo the late Cliff Burton was well known for on Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). During the aforementioned bass solo video footage of Burton performing onstage accented the music perfectly. Other exceptional highlights included Kirk's stellar guitar shredding accompanied frequently by usage of his wah pedal. Cuts such as Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death and the encore Enter Sandman in particular contained solos showcasing his seemingly boundless talent! Things heated up literally as well during the songs Fight Fire with Fire and Sandman when pyrotechnics were activated and flames shot up from the stage. At the end Ulrich tossed sticks out into the audience. Hetfield, Trujillo and Hammett threw and shook picks from little jack o' lantern tins out into the crowd, the picks of which boasting the band logo as well as the theatre's location and concert date on them. Great souvenirs in even something so small right there as my husband and I each scooped one up off the floor! A grand night out, the next one of which cannot come soon enough!

2nd September show in Cobenhagen.

Tallica promised us a unique show because this concert was postponed show from February. Many people travel a long way to see them in February including me traveling from Iceland.

The moment when I heard Seek & Destory in the #3rd slot then I knew this was going to be something special.

They performed Thought The Never in slot #4 and that song has not been played for 4 years. The next song was The Day That Never Comes and we did not believe that because in our wildest dreams we hoped to have that on the list, we jumped like there was no day tomorrow.

Dream No More was in the slot #7 and that was the second time Metallica has played that song. It was nice to hear Breadfan in slot #10. We saw many drons flying over the stage in Moth Into Flame, which was amazing!

Fight Fire With Fire was in the encore faster than ever.

Me and my friends walked away from Royal Arena in great mood with a big smile on our faces and with a hoarse throut, like James was in February.

About the unique show as we where promised in February it was only UNIQUE for 2 days because Amsterdam got almost the same setlist. But we got a free T-shirt, that was probably the unique thing for us.

We where hoping for some live debut like Murder One, Spit Out The Bones but it did not happend.

The song ManUnkind was performed tonight in Paris (10th September) and that is unique.

Iceland has been waiting since 2004 for Metallica to come back to Iceland when they held the biggest indore concert in Reykjavík. We do not want to wait another 23 years like we did before 2004.

All the best,

Gauti Sigurpálsson

Over 10 years, I got to see Metallica 7 times and each experience was in a different country. I have to admit the venues look different and incorporate a new way to watch the band but the musical vibe remains intact. They have shaped into an incredibly professional and hard-working live band. We can argue about and discuss their new album materials but one thing is guaranteed with Metallica: you will get only the best from their live performance. If you have not seen them live, just go to one gig. Doesnt matter if you are not a metal fan because the experience they deliver is incredible. I have seen families at their shows and even people who do not understand nor appreciate metal, but they all seemed to be excited from what they were witnessing. The only pity with Metallica is that you will most likely never have the chance to see them in a small venue. They are just too big of a band in demand and only deliver in large outdoor festivals or stadiums.

This summer they had a new style of set list where people could request via voting for songs. The top songs define the set list and this gives a chance for people to vote for what they want to hear. The only unfortunate thing about all this is that people are voting for songs they already play each tour. People should vote to get them to play new songs from their past, which they havent performed over 20 years. I was in Helsinki (their first European gig for 2014) and they had to play "The Frayed Ends of Insanity" and it was ecstatic. \m/

Do you like your rock shows huge, loud & engaging? Do you like stage sets that fill entire arena floors, filled with gigantic set pieces & enough pyro to blow up a small country? Do you like singing along to tightly played, iconic songs for 2-3 hours with thousands of friends? If yes, Metallica are your guys.

Each show starts when The Ecstasy of Gold (theme song from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly) plays over the PA, and crowd anticipation hits a fever pitch with thousands shouting along with the melody. Just thinking about the opening gives me goosebumps. Once Ecstasy hits its crescendo, they hit the stage like a thunderbolt, hammering through their lineup of classic tunes to a screaming, fist pumping, metal-sign-throwing crowd. Grizzled metal fans join together with legions of kids (oftentimes their own kids), shouting out every word of every song, and even singing along with guitar solos & melodies. Their set list varies each night. There are standards that they have to play, and you'll of course hear plenty of their big songs such as Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets. But they mix things up extremely well and no two nights are ever quite the same. It's amazing to me that after 30+ years and thousands of shows, the guys in the band still love mixing things up, still love goofing around on stage, still love engaging with the crowd, and obviously just love playing live & generating crazy crowd energy.

Quite simply, they are the kings of arena metal. Bow to the kings!

This was the first time I have been to a Metallica show. James has the best personality on stage. He gets the entire crowd into the show; into the mood; very laid back style. I like the fact the guys walk around the stage from different angles so that no matter where you sit, you can take excellent photos of them; that I have to give credit for that they do think of the fans in that aspect. The special effects were beautiful and showed in my pictures with my camera. James is very considerate of the fans from all aspects, you have to be in the Metallica Family...and you have to sing along with them...you just have to...the band played all the hit songs from present to past, no complaints. Saved the best song for last...Sandman....The sound system was excellent all around, no complaints. I am in still in shock; this was the best show I have ever seen in my life. They really have fun while playing they keep your interest up...James will not let the fans down..this band wants total audience participation...that is what to me, really stole the show. they do love and appreciate the fans....that is what stuck with me the most for a 1st time live performance is they really care about the fans..that really impressed me...

It was my first time in Turkey. From São Paulo to Istanbul I needed to take a 12-hour flight. 12 hours and 5 days. The necessary time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city before finally seeing one of the most amazing concerts I have ever seen! For me the concert had started when I met another crazy fan at the metro stations, going to Istanbul Technical University Stadium. So, after a few minutes, I was there. And I was able to see the power Metallica have to gather so many people from many countries. Lebanon, Kazakistan, Iran. Like me, a Brazilian guy. I admit I have not known the opening band, Pentagram. But the sound those guys had played left me so surprised. What an awesome performance! I had felt the emotion of being part of a rock concert when people started to sing the lyrics. Two hours later, time has come. Metallica by Request. The last European tour concert. The moment to listen the powerful voice of James Hetfield, the aggressive way to perform his guitar riffs, and all the greatest Metallica classical musics in front of me. In front of thousands of fans. Starting the concert playing "Master of Puppets" had been their way to say: Enjoy the best concert of your lives! Long live Metallica! Horns up! \m/

METALLICA's 'M72' Tour Travels With 64 Guitars, 36 Of Which Need To Be Show-Ready

Jeff Wagner of WCCO-TV , the CBS television affiliate that provides local news to viewers in Minnesota, has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the massive effort that it took to put on the two METALLICA shows at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis over the weekend.

According to the report, METALLICA 's touring crew includes 156 people, with 40 steelworkers, 168 local production hands and 92 truck drivers also helping to ensure things run smoothly. Another 800 people are employed locally to support each tour stop.

Jon-Michael Marino , the tour coordinator, told WCCO that there are four drum kits on the stage with two backups in the truck. There are 64 guitars and bass that go on the road, and 36 of them need to be show-ready (12 per band member). There are 6,000 guitar picks used or given out per concert and only 25 drumsticks are used or given away per performance.

Asked why so many guitars need to be ready for each show, Marino said: "Across, let's call it 15-16 songs, there's various tuning. There's also things that happen naturally like strings breaking, guitars going out of tune that have to be swapped in the moment."

In support of METALLICA 's latest album, "72 Seasons" , the band has been playing two-night, no-repeat shows in each city — first in Europe, then in North America, back in Europe, and now once again in North America — as part of the "M72" tour. Each concert sees METALLICA performing on a massive ring-shaped stage, with the Snake Pit in the center, and four drum sets which are equally spaced out around the circular stage so drummer Lars Ulrich can get closer to the audience at various points in the show.

Touring alongside METALLICA are PANTERA , FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH , MAMMOTH WVH and ICE NINE KILLS . For last weekend's Minnesota shows, the Friday lineup featured PANTERA and MAMMOTH WVH , with FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and ICE NINE KILLS playing on Sunday.

A number of METALLICA -themed events took place on Saturday, including bowling, axe throwing, films about METALLICA , "Name That Tune" competitions and a performance by AND ONE FOR ALL , in between the METALLICA performances.

METALLICA will close out the 2024 touring season with four shows in Mexico City at the end of September.

METALLICA 's manager Cliff Burnstein told Billboard that between 80% and 90% of fans at each concert attend both shows.

The "M72" tour launched in late April 2023 in Amsterdam.

IVECO “goes electric” with Metallica on the European leg of the band’s massive M72 World Tour

IVECO partners with Metallica, supporting them on the European leg of the M72 World Tour with electric and natural gas trucks and minibuses.

With its low- and zero- emission vehicles, IVECO will contribute to the band’s goal of reducing their carbon footprint one concert at a time for a sustainable show experience.

The partnership between IVECO and Metallica is based on shared core values of environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Turin, 15 th November 2023

IVECO announced a historic partnership with Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Metallica during the launch event of its full range renewal in Barcelona. The brand will support the band during the European leg of the M72 World Tour, filling stadiums across the continent from May to July 2024. IVECO electric and natural gas trucks and minibuses will join the Metallica caravan, transporting the band and their equipment to their concert locations in Munich, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Warsaw and Madrid. The announcement closed with the official launch video of IVECO’s new full range, enlivened by the ‘electrifying’ soundtrack of Metallica’s hit song “It’s Electric”.

Luca Sra , President, Truck Business Unit, Iveco Group , stated: “ T he launch of IVECO’s 2024 full range is a unique milestone in our history that opens an exciting chapter powered by our new energy. There could be no better time to announce a truly electrifying partnership. We are very happy to go ‘down the highway’ with this amazing band and crew onboard our alternative propulsion vehicles, driven by our shared vocation for supporting sustainable communities and pushing the boundaries for a better world.”

IVECO will provide electric and natural gas S-eWay and S-Way Metallica Special Edition heavy-duty trucks, personalised with a specially designed livery in the colou rs of the band’s 72 Seasons album. The matte black bodywork is flooded by a bright yellow finish on the side of the cab, while the front grille bears the iconic airbrushed Metallica logo. eDaily and Daily Natural Gas minibuses , also in a Special Edition Metallica livery, will provide a shuttle service for the band’s crew during the concerts. These “ green ” vehicles will contribute to Metallica’s goal of reducing their carbon footprint one concert at a time for a sustainable show experience and will.

In addition, initiatives are being planned to engage truck drivers. One example is an invitation to drivers, regardless of the brand of their vehicle, to submit videos of themselves performing to Metallica music for a chance to win concert tickets.

IVECO and Metallica share a strong focus on environmental protection and social responsibility. IVECO is known for its commitment to “ green ” transport through long-standing investments in alternative propulsion solutions. As part of Iveco Group, the brand has committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2040 and will continue to support communities impacted by natural disasters and war, run training programmes for vulnerable youth and donate to feed people in need. These programmes align remarkably with the initiatives of Metallica’s foundation , “ All Within My Hands ” , which supports local food banks while the band is on tour, runs the Metallica Scholars workforce education initiative in support of community colleges, and contributes where possible to disaster relief efforts. Two partners perfectly in tune for a better future.

Metallica Discography:

Kill 'Em All (1983) Ride the Lightning (1984) Master of Puppets (1986) ...And Justice for All (1988) Metallica (1991) Load (1996) Reload (1997) St. Anger (2003) Death Magnetic (2008) Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016)

Metallica has been a trend-setter in the heavy-metal world and has only gone up throughout their years in music. Fans often describe them as ‘life changing’ and ‘visionaries for the rock world’ because of how they introduced their heavy metal songs to the music scene in 1981.

Metallica Background

Metallica was formed in 1981 and had many group members come and go. The current band members are James Hetfield (guitarist and vocalist), Lars Ulrich (drummer), Kirk Hammett (guitarist), and Robert Trujillo (bassist). Other memorable group members are Cliff Burton, Dave Mustaine and Jason Newstead.

Metallica started off by producing underground music hits and built a loyal fanbase right from the start. Their album, Master of Puppets , released in 1986 was their breakthrough moment, as it was described as one of the heaviest albums in the rock world. Their fifth album, Metallica, was the one that grabbed the attention of mainstream media and got the rest of the world hooked on their once very niche music. The band was even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

Metallica’s Greatest Hits

Metallica is one of the few bands that’s won award after award, despite not being a mainstream band for long. Their song, “Until It Sleeps”, won the Best Hard Rock Music Video for MTV’s Music Awards. Other hits include “Nothing Else Matters”, “One”, “Enter Sandman” and “Master of Puppets”. They even won iHeart Radio’s award for the Best Rock Artist of the Year in 2018.

On August 23 and 25, the  Metallica M72 World Tour takes over Commonwealth with two different sets with two different opening acts — Friday, August 23 features Pantera and Mammoth WVH and Sunday, August 25 features Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Mills.

Here are some tips to make your concert experience a smooth one.

Know Before You Go at Commonwealth Stadium

All guests are encouraged to arrive and enter Commonwealth Stadium early to go through security screening lines. For  Metallica , gates open at 4 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m. . All times are subject to change. For more information, visit edmonton.ca/CommonwealthEvents .

Clear Bag Policy and Bag Search

Commonwealth Stadium strongly encourages fans not to bring bags. There is a mandatory  clear bag policy  in place at Commonwealth Stadium for all events. Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12″ x 12” x 6″ are allowed. Small clutch bags, which cannot exceed 4.5″ x 6.5″ in size, can be taken into the stadium or a clear bag. Fans with clear bags can use the Express Lanes. Exceptions to this policy will be made for all medically necessary items after proper inspection and approval.

Public Transit

Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is excited to help connect riders to these special events. Park & Ride buses start at 3:30 p.m. on August 23 and 25, and 4:30 p.m. on August 31. Park & Ride buses run approximately every five minutes until the concerts begin. After the concert Park & Ride buses will run every five minutes until the stadium is clear. Regular fares apply for Park & Ride buses, regular bus routes and Capital/Metro/Valley Line Southeast LRT service. For more information, visit  edmonton.ca/ETSevents

Please note there is no parking at Commonwealth Stadium and  parking restrictions  in neighbourhoods around the stadium will be in effect. When restrictions are in place, only residents with valid parking permits can park on streets in those areas.

There will be supervised bike parking on the northeast corner of Clarke Stadium. Signs will guide you to the drop-off and pick up location.

City of Edmonton and Commonwealth Stadium look forward to welcoming everyone to these world-class events — before the evenings ‘Fade to Black.

As many Edmontonians make their way downtown later today, Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, to take in the Metallica concert at Commonwealth Stadium, citizens are advised that there may be significant traffic and pedestrian congestion near the stadium during their Friday afternoon commute.

Citizens can expect to see EPS officers controlling vehicle and pedestrian traffic in several areas with the expected  road closure of Stadium Road between 92 Street and 112 Avenue beginning at 4 p.m.  Detours will be in place until pedestrian, bus and vehicle traffic has subsided to safe levels, at which time the road will re-open.

Stadium Road will then be closed again following the conclusion of the concert at 11 p.m.  and will continue until concert goers have safely left the area.

During these closures, motorists are encouraged to please avoid the area or seek alternate routes.  A map of the anticipated closure is attached.

We also remind concert goers to enjoy the show respectfully and responsibly. Please ensure you have a safe and sober ride home.

Metallica are currently touring with 64 guitars – and 36 need to be ready to go at any given moment

I f you need a new excuse to buy more guitars, try this: Metallica’s M72 world tour includes an arsenal of 64 electric guitars , 32 of which need to be riff-ready at any given moment.

WCCO-TV ’s Jeff Wagner was given a peak behind the scenes as the tour rolled into Minnesota, and the logistics are enormous. The touring crew consists of 156 personnel, which includes 40 steelworkers, with an additional 168 local production hands and 92 truck drivers. 800 locals are also employed to support each specific date.

But the number of six-strings that are brought along for the ride is what really catches the eye. That figure of 64 is split between guitar and bass , with the 36 gig-ready axes equating to 12 instruments per member.

Justifying that inflated figure, tour coordinator Jon-Michael Marino told WCCO-TV : “Across, let's call it 15-16 songs, there's various tunings. There's also things that happen naturally like strings breaking, guitars going out of tune that have to be swapped in the moment.”

Metallica’s current run has found the metal titans stop at each destination city for two nights, and perform two independent sets with no repetition. That’s a grueling run for the musicians and instruments alike, and so a suitably vast army of guitars has been assembled to roll with the punches of such heavy touring.

Adding to that array of guitars – which is likely to include Kirk Hammet’s latest signature guitar , the ESP LTD KH-V , and his iconic Greeny Les Paul – are 6,000 guitar picks , used or given away to the crowd each show, and 25 drumsticks that succumb to the same fate. Per night.

Therefore, across Metallica's five September dates, roughly 30,000 picks will be needed – roughly the same amount this writer probably has down the back of his couch.

To be fair, the construction of the eight towers, wrapped in LED screens, amounts to 36 hours of labor. They each weigh over 14 tons and are nearly 100ft tall. It would seem wrong, then, to tour with just a handful of instruments.

Kirk Hammett raised eyebrows late last year when he proclaimed that, no matter how impressive a player's solos are, they're going to be forgotten by most listener s: “I hate to say it, but non-musicians – who are the majority of the listening world – are not going to remember guitar solos ,” he told Total Guitar .

Metallica are currently touring with 64 guitars – and 36 need to be ready to go at any given moment

M72 Live in Cinemas review: Metallica's 2-night global concert event captures pure heavy metal magic

The legendary rockers' recent shows in Arlington, Texas were broadcast in theaters in more than 75 different countries.

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Heavy metal legends Metallica took the stage on a recent sweltering night in Arlington, Texas to the rapid-fire riffs of their 1984 hit " Creeping Death ." The track, which details the plagues of Egypt, includes a standout moment in which fans are encouraged to chant the word "die" at the top of their lungs, a long-standing tradition the concertgoers packed into AT&T Stadium upheld with gusto. But they weren't alone — more than 1,500 miles away in New York City's Lower East Side, another mighty crowd was screaming it too, this time at a movie theater screen as they tuned into the band's two-night global livestream, M72 Live in Cinemas .

For the past four months, the San Francisco quartet — lead singer James Hetfield , drummer Lars Ulrich , guitarist Kirk Hammett , and bassist Robert Trujillo — have been throwing their own outrageously badass metal festival each weekend with the help of Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, Mammoth WVH, and more on their ongoing M72 Tour. The two-night concert event, billed as a "No Repeat Weekend," features an ever-changing setlist handpicked by Ulrich that sees the group performing more than 30 different songs from their sensational discography, keeping the material fresh for all, even those who had attended previous stops. And while no concert film can ever completely capture the live-wire sensation of getting absolutely pummeled by 200 beats per minute at a Metallica concert, Live in Cinemas still succeeded in delivering a rip-roaring romp filled with old friends, time-tested tunes, a horde of black-and-yellow beach balls getting launched into the sky, and a few unexpected moments of sheer joy.

Inside the theater, the crowd was split into two categories: those who had recently caught Metallica's weekend stint in New Jersey earlier in August (as evidenced by many of their T-shirts), and those who hadn't. For those who weren't able to see them live (or have plans to see them in the forthcoming year), Live in Cinemas was an excellent way to not only catch up with their favorite band and feel a part of the Metallica Family festivities, but also to witness a crew of world-class artists still dedicated to delivering an unforgettable show more than 40 years into their storied careers. Multiple camera angles ensured that viewers got as up close and personal to the group's musical mayhem as those packed into the stadium's Snake Pit — the interior circle within Metallica's donut-shaped stage — throughout their electrifying, two-hour-plus performance. That proximity was a gem for concert and theater attendees alike, and proved to be particularly relatable whenever a gaggle of onscreen fans — from earmuff-wearing infants to wizened, battle-vest-sporting rockers — began howling and raising their hands skyward whenever Hetfield, Trujillo, Ulrich, or Hammett stomped in front of them.

The theater offered plenty of fun, too. Fans of all ages transformed the events into their own private Metallica festivals by headbanging, singing along, and gleefully running across the aisles as the band tore through classics like "Leper Messiah" and "Harvester of Sorrow" as well as deeper cuts like "No Leaf Clover" and "Dirty Window." In turn, the theater cranked their set up to 11, Spinal Tap –style, with crystal-clear audio quality that allowed viewers to take in all of Hetfield's signature snarls, Trujillo's punishing basslines, Ulrich's furious pounding, and Hammett's wailing guitar solos just as the metal gods intended.

Live in Cinemas also gave their disciples who'd spent a weekend with Metallica IRL the ability to take in some of the show's finer details, like the way Ulrich's four drum kits rise and sink beneath the stage throughout the evening, or how Hammett's fingers fly across the fretboard of his million-dollar guitar Greeny, which once belonged to Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green. The event also included a glimpse of the crew member tasked with crouching down in front of Ulrich's dual kick drums to prevent them from being knocked over by the wave of massive beach balls that bounced around the stadium as Metallica ripped through their 1983 hit "Seek and Destroy" and their rendition of "Whiskey in the Jar," the traditional Irish song popularized by Thin Lizzy, toward the end of their set. It also yielded several heartwarming moments between them and their fanbase, including Trujillo jamming alongside a peace-sign-waving toddler and Hetfield signing someone's cast and giving them his armband at the end of the gig.

In case it wasn't obvious: Metallica sounds and performs superbly whether on screen or in the flesh. Following the release of their 11th studio album, 72 Seasons, and the cultural resurgence of "Master of Puppets" thanks to Stranger Things , their passion for the craft was plainly visible on all of their faces as they danced around each other while plugging away on their instruments, smiled and waved at kids in the crowd, and repeatedly affirmed their love for their fans throughout the evening. And, lest audiences forgot, it was occasionally — and charmingly — obvious that the band was really was playing live, as demonstrated by a moment on the second night during which Hetfield accidentally omitted a section of their 2023 hit "If Darkness Had a Son" and, by the time he realized it, it was too late.

"F---ed that one up, sorry!" he said through laughter. "We'll do it again at the next show." The legends then proceeded to shred their parts as originally intended, with Hammett and Ulrich grinning and staring straight into the livestream camera like it was an episode of The Office .

At times, even multiple cameras couldn't properly keep up with the rollicking party playing out on stage. Certain angles would temporarily turn blurry, or unexpectedly cut to another member just before a particular solo audiences would have killed to see. These kinks were largely ironed out by the second night, but at the sacrifice of smaller snippets of crowd interaction and any footage of the mosh pits that bubbled up around the stage. At one point, during the second screening, the Snake Pit was a swirling vortex of bodies, but cinemagoers, sadly, barely caught a glimpse of it.

Still, if you can't make it out for the M72 Tour, or just wished to revisit what is arguably one of the best shows on the road right now, then Live in Cinemas was the perfect feel-good cure-all for any Metallica fan — pure heavy metal magic. B+

The Obscene Amount of Guitar Picks Metallica Goes Through in One Show

' src=

Metallica will be wrapping up the 2024 North American leg of their M72 tour soon. Anyone lucky enough to catch the band on this tour knows the stage setup and the overall production is intense.

Just how intense? CBS News Minnesota did a breakdown of some incredible numbers related to the M72 tour when it rolled into Minneapolis on August 16 and 18. The outlet spoke with Metallica tour coordinator Jon-Michael Marino who confirmed the band’s tour has a crew of over 150 people. In addition to that crew, there are also 40 steelworkers, 168 local production hands and 92 truck drivers hauling all of the stage pieces to and from every city.

The sheer amount of instruments taken on tour is stunning, too. CBS News Minnesota reports, “There are four drum kits on the stage with two backups in the truck. There are 64 guitars and bass that go on the road, and 36 of them need to be show-ready (12 per band member).”

And then, we have drumsticks and guitar picks. Apparently, Lars Ulrich goes through 25 sticks a show, which are either used or given away. As for guitar picks for James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, they go through a whopping 6,000 per show. Like Lars, these picks are either used or given away. (Boy, whoever supplies Metallica with guitar picks for a tour must make a decent paycheck!)

Metallica has two more cities left in North America on their M72 tour. They’ll play Lumen Field in Seattle on August 30 and September 1. Then, they’ll head to Mexico City to perform at Foro Sol on September 20, 22, 27 and 29.

Or, to use simple math, Metallica has 36,000 guitar picks until the end of the tour.

Metallica Learns to Press Vinyl at Their Vinyl Plant

In other Metallica-related news: The iconic metal band recently stopped by Furnace Record Pressing, the Virginia-based vinyl pressing plant they invested in in March 2023 , and learned how to press a vinyl record. In the video below, each member of Metallica learns to press vinyl step-by-step. In fact, each member presses a “splatter vinyl” of their classic album Ride the Lightning. The clip is cheekily captioned, “Even with 43 years and 12 LPs under their belts, the fine folks at Furnace Record Pressing can still teach Metallica a thing or two about ~making~ a record.”

When Metallica invested in Furnace Record Pressing in 2023, they gained a majority interest in the plant, which was first founded in 2014 and has pressed over five million vinyl records for Metallica over the years. Metallica saw this investment as an opportunity to better serve its fans and their demand for vinyl. Hetfield said in a statement , “Furnace has been great to Metallica and more importantly to our fans. This deepened relationship between Metallica and Furnace ensures that fans of vinyl everywhere, particularly our Fifth Members, will have continued access to high quality records in the future.”
