Discovery Alert: Spock’s Home Planet Goes ‘Poof’

Artist's concept shows a full disk of imagined planet Vulcan, predominantly light brown with patches of gray-green, against the black background of space.

The discovery

A planet thought to orbit the star 40 Eridani A – host to Mr. Spock’s fictional home planet, Vulcan, in the “Star Trek” universe – is really a kind of astronomical illusion caused by the pulses and jitters of the star itself, a new study shows.

The possible detection of a planet orbiting a star that Star Trek made famous drew excitement and plenty of attention when it was announced in 2018. Only five years later, the planet appeared to be on shaky ground when other researchers questioned whether it was there at all. Now, precision measurements using a NASA-NSF instrument, installed a few years ago atop Kitt Peak in Arizona, seem to have returned the planet Vulcan even more definitively to the realm of science fiction.

Two methods for detecting exoplanets – planets orbiting other stars – dominate all others in the continuing search for strange new worlds. The transit method, watching for the tiny dip in starlight as a planet crosses the face of its star, is responsible for the vast majority of detections. But the “radial velocity” method also has racked up a healthy share of exoplanet discoveries. This method is especially important for systems with planets that don’t, from Earth’s point of view, cross the faces of their stars. By tracking subtle shifts in starlight, scientists can measure “wobbles” in the star itself, as the gravity of an orbiting planet tugs it one way, then another. For very large planets, the radial velocity signal mostly leads to unambiguous planet detections. But not-so-large planets can be problematic.

Even the scientists who made the original, possible detection of planet HD 26965 b – almost immediately compared to the fictional Vulcan – cautioned that it could turn out to be messy stellar jitters masquerading as a planet. They reported evidence of a “super-Earth” – larger than Earth, smaller than Neptune – in a 42-day orbit around a Sun-like star about 16 light-years away. The new analysis, using high-precision radial velocity measurements not yet available in 2018, confirms that caution about the possible discovery was justified.

The bad news for Star Trek fans comes from an instrument known as NEID, a recent addition to the complex of telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory. NEID, like other radial velocity instruments, relies on the “Doppler” effect: shifts in the light spectrum of a star that reveal its wobbling motions. In this case, parsing out the supposed planet signal at various wavelengths of light, emitted from different levels of the star’s outer shell, or photosphere, revealed significant differences between individual wavelength measurements – their Doppler shifts – and the total signal when they were all combined. That means, in all likelihood, the planet signal is really the flickering of something on the star’s surface that coincides with a 42-day rotation – perhaps the roiling of hotter and cooler layers beneath the star’s surface, called convection, combined with stellar surface features such as spots and “plages,” which are bright, active regions. Both can alter a star’s radial velocity signals.

While the new finding, at least for now, robs star 40 Eridani A of its possible planet Vulcan, the news isn’t all bad. The demonstration of such finely tuned radial velocity measurements holds out the promise of making sharper observational distinctions between actual planets and the shakes and rattles on surfaces of distant stars.

Even the destruction of Vulcan has been anticipated in the Star Trek universe. Vulcan was first identified as Spock’s home planet in the original 1960s television series. But in the 2009 film, “Star Trek,” a Romulan villain named Nero employs an artificial black hole to blow Spock’s home world out of existence.

The discoverers

A science team led by astronomer Abigail Burrows of Dartmouth College, and previously of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, published a paper describing the new result, “The death of Vulcan: NEID reveals the planet candidate orbiting HD 26965 is stellar activity,” in The Astronomical Journal in May 2024 (Note: HD 26965 is an alternate designation for the star, 40 Eridani A.)

The staggering 485-cap XI England have left out of their Euro 2024 squad

Gareth Southgate has finalised his England squad for Euro 2024 – and has left out plenty of experienced players from the group that will travel to Germany.

Southgate had garnered a reputation for sticking with his favourites through thick and thin, but has showcased his ruthless streak by dropping several household names from his 26-man selection.

We’ve totted up the number of caps from this staggeringly-experienced XI that won’t be representing England in this summer’s tournament.

GK: Nick Pope

One of the goalkeepers set to be Jordan Pickford’s understudy in Germany, Pope’s tournament hopes were ended last December when he suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Newcastle’s defensive record nosedived without him, but the 32-year-old didn’t recover in time to suitably convince Southgate of his fitness. His 10 caps won’t be added to this summer.

RB: Reece James

James walks into the England squad on talent alone, even in the hotly-contested right-back role, but the Chelsea captain spent the majority of the 2023-24 campaign on the treatment table.

There is still every chance the full-back will become an England regular in time, but he’ll have to wait to add to his 16 international caps.

CB: Eric Dier

Dier’s chances of making the squad were boosted when he moved to Bayern Munich in January, but despite some solid performances, he was deemed surplus to requirements by Southgate.

“Since the World Cup, I wouldn’t say that I’ve had any dip in form,” the 49-cap defender told The Overlap in April.

“I’m playing the best football of my career since (Antonio) Conte came (to manage Tottenham in 2021) and I’ve carried it on since.

“People think that I’m 37 or something, but I’m 30 years old and am nowhere near the end of my prime and imagine that this will be my prime.

“I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I’m that level of a player.”

CB: Harry Maguire

Southgate has stood by Maguire through thick and thin, but it looks like injury will deny the Manchester United defender the opportunity to star in Germany this summer.

An integral member of England’s backline during three tournaments, the 31-year-old has not played at club level since April due to a calf injury.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,” the 63-cap defender said in response to his omission.

“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.

“I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

TRY A QUIZ:  Can you name every player capped by Gareth Southgate for England?

LB: Ben Chilwell

This time last year, Chilwell was practically guaranteed a place in the England squad, but following an injury-hit campaign with Chelsea, he now finds himself kicking his heels this summer.

When fully fit, Chilwell can rub shoulders with some of the best full-backs in the league. However, given he only started nine league matches, it’s hardly much of a surprise that the 21-cap defender missed out.

TRY A QUIZ:  Can you name every England player to score at a major tournament since 1990?

CM: Jordan Henderson

After a season which saw him make a controversial switch to Saudi Arabia before returning to Europe with Ajax in January, Henderson will be watching the Euros from his sofa this summer as the 33-year-old was not named in Southgate’s initial squad.

Given the England manager stood by Henderson when public criticism was at its peak, the decision to omit the 81-cap midfielder came as a surprise – although not for footballing reasons.

CM: Kalvin Phillips

Phillips’ career has nosedived since leaving Leeds United for Manchester City in 2022, spending months on the Etihad bench before a memorably bad loan spell at West Ham saw the midfielder play his way out of contention.

The writing was on the wall when the 28-year-old was left out of Southgate’s squad for March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

And the 31-cap midfielder, who started all of England’s matches at Euro 2020, will be left to reflect on where it all went wrong this summer.

RW: Raheem Sterling

Given that Sterling has played for the Three Lions since the 2022 World Cup, nobody was surprised when the 29-year-old failed to make the cut for the Euros.

But the Chelsea winger has been one of Southgate’s key men during his eight years as England manager, scoring more goals than anybody other than Harry Kane in that time.

His form at club level has been patchy ever since leaving Manchester City and, given the emergence of young talent in his position, it appears unlikely Sterling will add to his 82 England caps.

Twenty-eight players have scored for England at the Euros.

TRY A QUIZ:  Can you name every England player to score at the European Championship?

CAM: Mason Mount

Another omission that would’ve been headline news two years ago but barely raises an eyebrow now, Mount has fallen off the England radar since his move to Manchester United last year.

Injuries and loss of form have made the 25-year-old appear like yesterday’s man in record time. It’s hard to believe Mount started the Euro 2020 final, one of his 36 international caps.

LW: Jack Grealish

Most observers expected Grealish to be on the plane to Germany, especially after his eye-catching cameo in the friendly with Bosnia 7 Herzegovina in June 2024.

But the 36-cap forward has paid the price for a forgettable club season at Manchester City, with Southgate opting for in-form alternatives like Anthony Gordon, Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen instead.

ST: Marcus Rashford

With just eight goals in 43 matches for Manchester United in 2023-24, Rashford can have few complaints after being left out of England’s 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament.

“These are of course difficult calls,” Southgate said in a press conference. “You are talking about very good players who have been important in what we’ve done over a number of years.

“With Marcus, I just feel that other players in that area of the pitch had better seasons. It’s as simple as that.”

Rashford reacted to his England snub on social media, writing on his Instagram story: “Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament.”

Parade Of Planets 2024

Parade of planets 2024 on July 3rd.

Are you ready for the Parade of Planets 2024!? Early-risers, keep your eyes peeled for Jupiter, Uranus, Mars, Neptune, Saturn, and even the dwarf planet Pluto which will be in the sky at the same time before sunrise from June 24-July 4, 2024 . Also, you’ll be able to watch the Moon pass by each planet one by one during this time frame. What will you actually see? When and where exactly should you look? What equipment will you need? Here is your Parade of Planets 2024 go-to guide.

Look Before Sunrise

The important thing to note is that the Parade of Planets 2024 only occurs before sunrise and will not be visible in the evening. In fact, nighttime skywatchers have been in a planet drought —when no planets have been visible in the sky just after dark. But the planet drought will end with Mercury making a brief appearance in early July and Venus slowly but surely emerging from behind the Sun and popping out to the evening sky later this summer.

The first planet to rise above the eastern horizon is Saturn which will clear the treetops about 1 a.m. local time. Neptune will quickly follow, rising about 30 minutes later. The planet Mars will rise about 3:30 a.m., just north of east. It will be equal in brightness to Saturn but shine with a distinctly orange color. Uranus rises one half hour later at 4 a.m. and then brilliant Jupiter comes up a little before 5 a.m. The planets will appear in this order from left to right: Jupiter, Uranus, Mars, Neptune, and Saturn. (See a reference illustration in the feature image for this story.)

The Sun will quickly follow the planets. As dawn approaches, and the sky brightens, the planets will become invisible.

Parade of planets 2024: key dates.

To help you keep track of the planets, the Moon will pass through the parade between June 24 and July 4. As the Moon circles the Earth, its position shifts slightly each morning. The Moon, like the planets, also appears to travel near the ecliptic and will pass by each object on our list and can help you locate the tougher-to-find worlds.

After midnight on June 24, Pluto rises before any of the planets. You will not see Pluto with the naked eye, but you will see a waning gibbous Moon shining brilliantly in the southeastern sky. On the morning, the Moon serves as a landmark for knowing approximately where Pluto is.

If you have a really good telescope, you may attempt to find Pluto about 2 degrees above the Moon. But do not worry if you cannot find the dwarf planet Pluto—few trained astronomers can.

The significant Moon-planet pairings begin on the morning of June 27 when the waning Moon will shine three degrees to the right of the planet Saturn.

If you have even a simple backyard telescope, aim it at the Moon to observe the rough cratered lunar surface in more detail. Then shift the telescope over to Saturn. To the naked eye, Saturn looks like an ordinary yellow star. But through a telescope you can see the rings around the planet.

On June 28 about an hour before sunrise, the Moon will have shifted remarkably close to the planet Neptune. In fact, for portions of that morning, the Moon will appear less than one half degree below Neptune.

Get out that telescope and aim it at the Moon that morning. Then move your view ever so slightly up and look for a deep blue dot of light. This may be your best chance this year to find Neptune since the Moon can be your guide.

The Moon will pass the final three planets in the parade quickly. Before sunrise on July 1, the Moon will appear up and to the right of Mars.

On July 2, the Moon will be to the left of Uranus. Although you cannot see Uranus with the naked eye, you may be able to see another astronomical sight to the left of the Moon: The Pleiades star cluster also known as the Seven Sisters may just barely shine through the approaching dawn near the Moon.

Finally, before sunrise on July 3, the waning crescent Moon will shine to the left of Jupiter. You will have to time this well since Jupiter and the Moon will be low in the eastern sky and the Sun will be rising. Look for the Moon-planet pairing about 30-45 minutes before sunrise on July 3.

There is still a chance to catch the Parade of Planets 2024 on the morning of July 4, but the Moon will be very low on the horizon and therefore extremely tough to catch.

Psst … have you seen your Fourth of July Weather Forecast? Tap here!

Visibility Details

Although it does sound impressive to have five planets and Pluto lined up in the sky, visibility may disappoint you. The planets Uranus and Neptune cannot be seen with the naked eye. And to even spot Pluto as a tiny pale dot, you would need a sufficiently large or professional telescope. So that really leaves just three planets that you will actually observe in an arc across the east and southeastern pre-dawn sky: Jupiter low in the east, Mars up and to the right of Jupiter, and Saturn far off to the right of Mars. That said, knowing all of these planets are together in the morning sky between St. John’s Day and the Fourth of July is symbolically special.

Planet Distances

The planets vary in size and distance from Earth. When we see planets in the sky, we are seeing sunlight reflecting off their surfaces (and some planets are more reflective than others). This all leads to a variety of planet brightness.

Although it is about 540 million miles away, the planet is so large and reflects so much sunlight that it is easily the brightest of the five planets up in the morning sky this summer.

Mars and Saturn

Mars and Saturn are nearly equally bright and easily detected with the naked eye. Mars is a much smaller planet than Saturn but also significantly closer to Earth. Mars is about 160 million miles away while Saturn is about 860 million miles away.

Uranus and Neptune

Although Uranus and Neptune are large planets (each is about four times the diameter of Earth), they are so far away that you need a telescope just to see them. Uranus is almost 1.9 billion miles from Earth and Neptune is more than 2.7 billion miles away.

Whether you consider it to be a planet or not, Pluto will also be in the morning sky this summer. It is almost 3.2 billion miles away and so tiny that only a small amount of sunlight reaches its icy surface to weakly reflect to Earth.

Previous planet parades.

It’s tough to compete with the Parade of Planets 2022 (which also occurred in the end of June). During this rare sky event all the planets were in the sky at the same time in their exact order: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—even Pluto standing at the end of the arc. In 2023, the most impressive parade of planets was in late March when the Moon passed by Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, and Mars. Read more about Parade of Planets 2023.

We feel Merchant Agents in high-traffic tourist areas are best type of Agent for the Marketing Managers.  So, we have created an easy way for our Marketing Managers to find them WITHOUT selling, cold-calling, or door-knocking, simply distribute about 20 postcards per day to targeted merchants.

It’s that simple.

By distributing around 20 per day (about 500 per month), you should expect anywhere from 10-20 Merchant Agents to sign up which can generate around $400-$800 per Merchant Agent in monthly residually .  See the chart below.

COST:  $95/mo.     You receive 8% RESIDUALS on Agents you hire.

planet travel network

Here Are The Numbers

Postcard distribution option: .

If you distribute an average of 20 cards per day (about 500 per month), you will generate AT LEAST 2% (about 10) merchants who realized this is a no-brainer and signup.

If each Merchant Agent only generates just  5 orders per day – (500 per month) , you would generate around  $4,000-$8,000 PER MONTH  (based on their location and foot-traffic) in RESIDUAL INCOME.

Keep in mind, once a Merchant Agent sees monthly income from this promotion, they will NEVER STOP – only add more displays/signage.

NOTE:  5 orders a day is very little considering you will be promoting in a high-traffic tourist areas.

Your Target Market

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
