Is a Venice pass worth it?

Yes, purchasing a Venice pass is worth it! If you plan on visiting several landmarks or museums that are included on the pass, then you can save hundreds of dollars in fees by bundling your admission together.

However, there are a few different Venice attraction passes to choose from, based on your interests and itinerary.

What are the best Venice city passes available?

There are six primary Venice attraction passes you can choose from:

  • Venice Museum Pass
  • MUVE Friend Card
  • Venice Unica Pass

The Venice Pass

Venice discovery pass, san marco city pass, editor’s choices: the best venice city passes, venice unica city pass.

If you’re interested in developing your own customized program of activities, museums, excursions, and transit passes, the Venice Unica City Pass is an excellent Venice tourist pass.

With an average of 4.5 stars from more than 190 reviews, The Venice Pass is the best choice if you want to experience Venice’s major three attractions–St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and a gondola ride.

Venice Museum Pass and MUVE Friend Card

Purchasing the standard Venice Museum Pass gives you one-time admission to twelve of the city’s major Civic museums over six months.

In contrast, the MUVE Friend Card gives you unlimited access to the city’s twelve museums over twelve months.

The Venice Museum Pass costs €36 for adults, and the MUVE Friend Card costs €45 for adults. You can look at the current pricing for the  Venice Museum Pass  and the  MUVE Friend Card  here.

  • Attractions : You can visit all twelve of the city’s major museums included in both passes. Participating museums include the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, National Archaeological Museum, Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana, Cà Rezzonico, Palazzo Mocenigo Museum, Carlo Goldoni’s House, Ca’ Pesaro, the Murano Glass Museum, the Burano Lace Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Palazzo Fortuny Museum.
  • Validity : The standard Venice Museum Pass is valid for 160 days, and the MUVE Friend Card is good for 365 days once you activate them for the first time.
  • Suitability : These passes are excellent if you were planning to visit a few of the museums on this list already or are fascinated by some of the lesser-known museums in Venice. I highly recommend it if you live in Italy, close to Venice, and often take day trips into the city .
  • You do not need to make a reservation with any museums in advance before you visit; you can just show up and activate your pass.
  • You’ll have six whole months to visit all of the museums offered with the Venice Museum pass and a full year with the MUVE Friend Card, so you don’t need to cram all of this art and history into just a few days.
  • It’s a straightforward, one-and-done purchase. When you buy this Venice attractions pass, you can access everything included.
  • If your trip to Venice is only a few days and you don’t live close enough to the city to visit again, you might not have the opportunity to check out all of the museums included.
  • You’ll need to purchase separate entry tickets if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.
  • Other significant landmarks and attractions that you might want to see in Venice aren’t included in this pass. Also, this pass doesn’t have a Vaporetto transportation pass.

How to Purchase and Use It

You can purchase the Venice Museum Pass or the MUVE Friend Card online.

A .pdf of your tickets will be delivered to you digitally, and you can either print it out or keep it on your phone.

When you visit a participating museum, have them scan the barcode listed on the ticket, and you’re good to go!

Why choose the Venice Museum Pass?

The Venice Museum Pass is worth it if all you want to do is visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums.

You have twelve world-class museums to choose from and six full months in which to see them all.

It’s also more straightforward than the Venice Unica Pass since it doesn’t include any additional add-ons you need to worry about expiring if a specific date was selected.

Why choose the MUVE Friend Card?

The MUVE Friend Card is perfect if you live nearby and want the option to go back to the twelve museums within the Musei Civici di Venezia system.

You have one year to go back to any museums as often as you’d like.

The Venice Unica Pass price varies depending on several factors like age, access to select landmarks, and what additional offerings you choose.

The least-expensive level without any add-ons starts at €21.90 for Juniors (ages 6 – 29), €33.90 for Adults (ages 30 – 64), and €21.90 for Seniors (ages 65+).

You can take a look at the  current pricing here .

  • The All Venice City Pass includes access to Doge’s Palace and eleven other Musei Civici di Venezia museums, fourteen chorus churches, and admission to the Querini Stampalia Foundation.
  • The All Venice City Pass + Fenice includes access to everything in the All Venice pass, with the addition of a guided audio tour of Teatro La Fenice.
  • The St. Mark’s City Pass includes access to the Doge’s Palace and the other three Musei Civici di Venezia museums within Piazza San Marco, only Santa Maria del Giglio – Sacred Art Museum, Santo Stefano, and Santa Maria Formosa chorus churches, and the Querini Stampalia Foundation.
  • The St. Mark’s City Pass + Fenice includes access to everything in the St. Mark’s pass, with the addition of a guided audio tour of Teatro La Fenice.
  • Validity : For visitors to Venice, the Venice Unica Pass is valid for 24 months from the date of purchase unless the product has a specific expiration date. The Venice Unica Pass is valid for five years for frequent visitors or residents of Venice.
  • Suitability : This pass is perfect if you’re looking for more offerings than only museums, especially if you were planning to ride the Vaporetto a lot while in Venice or needed to purchase access to the city’s internet.
  • Unless otherwise stated for a particular add-on, you don’t need to make a reservation with any of the museums in advance before you visit; you can just show up and activate your pass.
  • Since thus Venice Card for visitors is valid for 24 months, if you come back to Venice within 2 years of your purchase date, you can still use your discount card’s benefits.
  • You can really mix and match different offerings to make the pass best fit your interests.
  • You can purchase several tickets for the Vaporetto at a discounted rate at once.
  • Although most museums don’t require a reservation and can be used at any time, any ticket you buy with a set date and time can not be changed after purchase. So if you’re schedule changes, you’re unfortunately locked into the commitment and can’t change it.
  • If your trip to Venice is only a few days and you don’t live close enough to the city to visit again, you might not have the opportunity to see everything included.
  • You’ll need to purchase a separate ticket if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.

To purchase the Venice Unica Pass, you need to  head to their website  and follow the prompts to create a tourist travel card for each person.

Next, you’ll select which of their base-level “Best Deals” tickets you want to start with.

Then, scroll through the additional add-ons and select which card you want to add it to.

Once you’re done, you’ll check out online, save your voucher to your phone, and/or print it out, so you have it with you when you arrive in Venice.

Since each pass is different, follow the directions listed on the voucher on how to access and use the pass you’ve purchased.

Why choose the Venice Unica Pass?

If you’re looking for more flexibility than the Venice Museum Pass, then the Venice Unica Pass is what you want to go with.

One of the base-level passes includes every museum included in the Venice Museum Pass and other admissions.

Or, if all twelve museums are overwhelming, you can choose a base-level pass that only consists of the four significant museums within Piazza San Marco for less, which still includes extra benefits and the option for add-ons.

venezia unica tourist pass

The Venice Pass offers a curated selection of the top attractions most people plan to see when they come to Venice.

Since you’re bundling the cost of admission, it’s overall less expensive than if you were purchasing all of these separately.

The Venice Pass costs $97.38 for adults (ages 30+), $84.95 for youths (ages 6 – 29), and $34.19 for children (ages 2 – 5).

  • Attractions : The Venice Pass includes skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, a downloadable audio walking tour called Discover Venice: Past and Present, an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.

  • Suitability : This pass is an excellent choice if you’re interested in accessing all of Venice’s most famous attractions.
  • With a streamlined selection of excursions, you’ll be able to use all of the activities on your pass.
  • Since you can choose the exact dates you want to use for each of the included attractions, you can spread your experiences out over the whole amount of time you’re visiting Venice instead of squeezing everything into 24 or 48 hours.
  • Once you buy The Venice Pass, Tiqets sends you a 10% discount code to use for your next purchase!
  • When you’re buying this Venice pass, you have to select all of your entrance times at the time of purchase.
  • Since your tickets are tied to the specific dates and times you chose at the time of booking, rescheduling any part of your ticket is not allowed after you make your purchase.

To purchase The Venice Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.”

Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose The Venice Pass?

This streamlined pass is an excellent choice if you’re interested in experiencing only the most famous landmarks in Venice–St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and enjoying a gondola ride.

venezia unica tourist pass

Like the Venice Pass, the Venice Discovery Pass allows visitors to choose from a curated list of the best things to see and do in Venice.

However, it offers more experiences and landmarks than the more consolidated Venice Pass.

The Venice Discovery Pass has different pricing based on your age and how many days you want the pass to be active. You can view the current pricing breakdown on their website here.

  • Attractions : The Venice Discovery Pass includes a fast-track entrance to Doge’s Palace, admission into 15 different Catholic landmarks throughout the city, an Alilaguna Boat Transfer from the city center to the airport, and an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice. It also includes 24-, 48-, or 72-hour unlimited access to Venice’s public water transportation system, the Vaporetto.
  • Validity : When you purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, you will schedule each of your included attractions at the time of booking. Your excursion is available on the date you selected in advance. However, your Venetian Churches Chorus Pass is valid for 1 year after its first use.
  • Suitability : This pass is a great choice if you’re interested in visiting Venice’s many historic churches or want to utilize an airport transfer or the Vaporetto system without worrying about additional bookings.
  • If you’re interested in visiting historic Catholic churches in Venice, this pass includes entry to fifteen churches.
  • No need to schedule an additional airport transfer and Vaporetto passes to get you into and around Venice–this pass does it for you.
  • The only major landmark the Venice Discovery Pass includes is Doge’s Palace, so you’ll still need to purchase entry to other museums you want to see.

To purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.” Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose the Venice Discovery Pass?

If you’re looking for a Venice pass that combines an airport transfer with a Vaporetto pass, then this is a great choice.

This is an image of the Rialto bridge in Venice, Italy as seen from the water.

The San Marco City Pass is the only one of its kind here on this list of the best Venice city passes! If you’re a history buff who’s passionate about the Republic of Venice, this one is for you.

The San Marco City pass costs $40.80 for adults (ages 30-65), $25.10 for youths (ages 6-29), and $25.10 for seniors (ages 65+).

  • Attractions : The San Marco City Pass includes almost all of the most famous attractions in Piazza di San Marco. With this pass, you can visit Doge’s Palace, the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Marciana National Library, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, and three churches–the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, the Church of Santo Stefano, and the Church of Santa Maria Formosa.
  • Validity : When you purchase the San Marco City Pass, you can enter each included museum or monument one time and it’s valid for two years once activated. However, you must enter the Doge’s Palace on the date and time you select at the time of booking.
  • Suitability : This pass is great for anyone who is interested in only exploring the included museums around Piazza di San Marco.
  • Once you activate the pass with your entry to Doge’s Palace, you can use it for entry into the other included landmarks for two years.
  • Instead of purchasing one of these other Venice city passes with too many offerings for a short Venice itinerary, You’re only paying for the things you really want to do.
  • Although it’s called the San Marco City Pass, entry into the Basilica di San Marco is not included in this pass.
  • Once you purchase the pass, you can’t change your entry date and time for the Doge’s Palace.

To purchase the San Marco City Pass, you’ll need to visit the Civitatis and select the date you’re interested in activating your pass and the number of tickets you’ll need.

Once your pass has been purchased, you can schedule all of your additional activities up until the start time, as long as they have space available.

Why choose the San Marco City Pass?

If you’re interested in really exploring all of the different landmarks, the San Marco City Pass is for you.

You’ll be able to take time to discover the history of Venice inside these museums without paying for other museum entries you won’t have time to use.

Venice Sightseeing Passes Comparison Breakdown

venezia unica tourist pass

Which is the best Venice city pass to buy for my trip?

Although each Venice attractions pass shares some similarities, here are my recommendations on which one to buy based on this Venice pass comparison:

The Overall Best Venice City Pass

After reviewing all of the information, and after very happily using the full Venice Museum Pass myself, the Venice Unica Pass is the best Venezia city pass overall, for both visitors and frequent visitors like myself.

It offers everything the Venice Museum Pass offers–and more.

However, what really sells me on the pass is that cardholders receive additional discounts from participating museums and restaurants.

The Best Venice Attractions Pass To Use Multiple Times

If you live near Venice or are planning to spend a lot of time in the city over the course of a year and want the flexibility to visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums over and over again, then you need the MUVE Friend Card .

Since there are no restrictions on how often you can visit any of the participating museums, you can take your time working through different museums and go back to others that you want to explore further.

Or, if family and friends are coming to visit and you know they’ll want to head into these museums, then the MUVE Friend Card makes the most sense.

The Best City Pass Venice for Major Attractions

If you’re visiting Venice for a limited amount of time and only want to experience the most famous landmarks and attractions, The Venice Pass is the best choice for you.

Although the pass only includes five excursions, it has the Big 3–skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.

If you’re not interested in wandering through museums and want to hit the biggest sites, this is the best pass for your itinerary.

The Best Pass to Explore San Marco

The San Marco City Pass is the perfect choice if you want to dive deep into the history and museums around Piazza di San Marco.

Although it does not include skip-the-line admission to the Basilica di San Marco, you can access the Doge’s Palace, the Marciana National Library, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Correr Museum–all museums surrounding the Piazza di San Marco.

The Case For A Venice Museum Pass

However, as I said, I’m a very happy Venice Museum Pass user!

When I first moved to the Veneto region, we didn’t know that there were different options for passes–we only saw the Venice Museum Pass available when we purchased individual tickets to visit Palazzo Ducale.

If you’re only going to be in Venice for a short time, so you don’t need the flexibility of multiple admission but want as many options as possible, this is the pass for you.

The Case of a Venice Discovery Pass

The Venice Discovery Pass offers the fewest bucket-list experiences in Venice .

However, if you’re interested in religious tourism and want to visit fifteen different historic Catholic churches in the city, this is the pass for you!

Also, if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of managing an airport transfer or scheduling your Vaporetto pass, the Venice Discovery Pass includes it for you.

venezia unica tourist pass

What are some Venice experiences and landmarks not included on these passes?

  • If you’re interested in purchasing one of the Venice city passes for museums, then they do not include a classic Gondola ride. Book a  Grand Canal by Gondola with Commentary  tour to try this wonderful boat trip.
  • Although admission is included for four of the major museums in Piazza San Marco, entry into the Torre dell’Orologio and climbing up the San Marco Campanile are not included in any of these Venice passes.
  • If you want to explore the Doge’s Palace further with a  Secret Itineraries tour , you’re going to need to purchase the experience separately from your ticket to Palazzo Ducale.

The Best Venice Tourist Cards: Wrap-Up

Fortunately, Venice offers a variety of passes that allow tourists to visit the most incredible landmarks and museums in the city while bundling admission.

To ensure that you enjoy the most out of your stay in Venice, consider purchasing one of these Venice city passes!

ACTV Line 12 vaporetto

ABOVE: A marinaio , or sailor, tosses a mooring line from a Line 12 water bus as it arrives on the island of Burano.

By Durant Imboden

I f you've read our Venice Vaporetto Fares article, you know that single waterbus fares for tourists are outrageous: They're  six times the fares paid by local residents and long-term sojourners.

Fortunately, the ACTV--Venice's local transit authority--offers 24-hour or multi-day passes that can reduce the financial pain of riding the city's vaporetti and motoscafi . The Venezia Daily Pass and 2-, 3-, and 7-Day Tickets allow unlimited travel on ACTV water and land buses. (If you've visited Venice previously, you may remember these tickets by their old name, "Tourist Travel Cards.")

For visitors between the ages of 14 and 29, a 3-day "Young Person's Travel Card" is available in combination with the Rolling Venice Card . It's a good value, especially if you're staying at the Generator Venice Hostel on Giudecca.

Here's our advice on using ACTV's daily and multi-day passes:

Don't buy more time than you need. Venice is compact and pedestrian-friendly, so you shouldn't need to ride the vaporetto very often unless you're visiting outlying islands (such as the Lido, Murano, Burano, and Torcello) or have limited mobility.

Consolidate your excursions. For example, if you're planning to visit Murano's glass factories and take a ride up the Grand Canal, buy a Venezia Daily Pass, make both trips in the same day, and take a leisurely ride up the Grand Canal on the No. 1 vaporetto in the evening.

Venice ACTV ticket reader

Be aware of the card's limitations. ACTV tourist travel cards are not valid on ATVO airport buses or Alilaguna airport boats . However, you can buy discounted travel on the ACTV Line 5 "Aerobus" from Marco Polo Airport to the city (or vice versa) in combination with a daily pass or multi-day travel ticket. See our A CTV Line 5 "Aerobus" page for details.

If you're a wheelchair user, skip the all-day or multi-day tickets and buy a stack of Disabled Tickets , which are cheap and let you bring a companion free. Each ticket is good for 75 minutes in one direction (using multiple water buses if needed).

Please note:

The clock doesn't start ticking until you scan or swipe your pass, so you can buy the pass before you plan to use it. (The pass is valid for 24, 48, 72, or 168 hours from the first scan, depending on how many days you've purchased.) Also, remember to scan the pass every time you use it.

You can check how much time is left on your pass by holding it up to the electronic card reader and pressing the "?" button.)

If you'll be staying in Mestre/Marghera or on the Lido di Venezia , see our Venice land bus & tram fares article for a description of the inexpensive Mestre Daily Pass . (Among other services, this electronic smartphone pass includes buses, trams, and regional trains between the mainland and Venice's historic center.)

ACTV ticket office at Ferrovia, Venice.

ABOVE: You can buy waterbus tickets and passes at the ACTV's Ferrovia stop in front of Venezia Santa Lucia Railroad Station . Other outlets include ticket agencies, newsstands, tobacco shops, etc. throughout Venice and its suburbs.

Other tips:

VeneziaUnica, a.k.a. the Venice tourist office, offers two passes:

Venezia Unica pass for tourists , which offers a la carte options such as an ACTV single- or multi-day tourist ticket, admission to municipal museums, and access to public toilets. The pricing scheme is Byzantine, and if you're mostly interested in transportation, we'd recommend just buying an ACTV travel pass. (See " Which Venice transportation pass do I need? " before making a decision.)

Venezia Unica pass for frequent users can be a good value if you're staying in Venice for a while or plan to visit the city repeatedly in the next several years. The stored-value card allows visitors to buy massively-discounted resident fares, and cardholders also get big discounts on Alilaguna airport boat fares.

You can avoid ticket lines by using the official AVM Venezia smartphone app to buy and validate fares and passes. (But read our AVM Venezia app article before taking the plunge.)

Review: Venice City Pass & Tourist Cards

Venice has a number of different tourist passes and travel cards . A number of these discount cards will really save you money and, above all, a lot of unnecessary waiting times, such as the Venice Pass , Venezia Unica Card and ACTV travel card . • The Venice Pass
  • ACTV Travel Card
  • Museum Card
  • Venice City Pass (Turbopass)
  • Venezia Unica Card
  • Single tickets

In addition, a classic gondola ride on the canals of Venice is also included ( Book your Venice City Pass here ). After payment you will receive your tickets by email or you can show them via smartphone.

This Venice City Pass includes these attractions:

  • Skip The Line entrance to the Basilica of San Marco (including Pala D'Oro, roof terrace and museum)

2) ACTV Public transport card

When you plan to use public transport in Venice you always have to rely on ACTV's waterbuses ( vaporettos ). Book your ACTV travel card easily via this link . During the booking process you can indicate for how many days you need a travel card. You will receive a smartphone voucher, which you can easily exchange at a Venezia Unica self-service ticket machine at a Vaporetto stop or at the Venezia Unica counter at Piazzale Roma (next to the station and main bus stop).

If you want to use public transport (via water), you are always depending on ACTV in Venice. You can pre-order your tickets for the Vaporetto waterbuses, choosing between the following ACTV travel cards:

  • Regular ACTV ticket for 75 minutes (9.50 €)
  • One day ticket , which is valid for the water buses in Venice and the islands of Lido, Murano and Burano (25 €)
  • Travel card for 2 days , which is valid for the water buses in Venice and the islands of Lido, Murano and Burano (35 €)
  • Travel card for 3 days , which is valid for the water buses in Venice and the islands of Lido, Murano and Burano (45 €)

  • ACTV Combi , a city pass with tickets for the water buses, the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica (from 86 €)

Suggestion : Are you considering the use of the Vaporetto? Then download the ' AVM Venezia app ' in the Play Store. This is a handy route planner from the transport company ACTV, so that you know exactly which line to take to and from your hotel.

3) Venice Museum Pass

This Venice Museum Pass is especially interesting if you plan to visit many museums. It is a pass that is valid for no less than 180 days and includes 11 museums , including a number of important museums on St. Mark's Square like the popular Doge's Palace . However, the disadvantage of this card is, that after your order, you still have to pick up the 'physical card' at one of the (central) collection locations in Venice. When booking, note that the museum card comes in two variants: the Museum Card Chorus (only interesting if you want to visit a lot of churches) and the most booked Museum Card Plus .

The Venice Museum Card Plus gives access to the following museums:

  • Biblioteca Marciana
  • Ca 'Rezzonico
  • The house of Carlo Goldoni

The Venezia Unica Card is another famous tourist card in Venice. The Venezia Unica Pass gives access to some major attractions such as the Doge's Palace and the museums of St. Mark's Square. Overview of the Types of Venice City Passes

There are a number of passes available for you to get the most out of your trip to Venice. Which one is best suited for you depends on a number of factors. In this section of the article, I will go over what the various passes are and then provide more detail about each one individually.

Not every pass is going to provide value, so you really have to choose wisely. Hopefully, this article will help you zero in on the right pass.

Venezia Unica Pass

The Doge’s Palace, also referred to as Palazzo Ducale, stands as a magnificent testament to the grandeur of the Venetian Republic.

skip the lines at St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace

This ticket not only provides you with entry to explore the once-powerful home of Venice’s Doges, featuring the renowned golden Scala D’Oro staircase, but also access to some of the city’s most iconic religious sites. You can skip the line to enter the Basilica di San Marco, visit the museum inside, and access the rooftop terrace.

In addition, choose any three churches from the 18 Chorus Churches in Venice to visit, such as Santa Maria del Giglio (boasting exceptional artwork), San Stae, and Santo Stefano.

Craving more cultural experiences? Your all-access pass also covers admission to the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana.

And while you’re in the city, don’t miss the opportunity to view over 400 paintings and frescoes from the 18th and 19th centuries at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, located in the very heart of Venice!

Venice City Pass

This is the ideal Venice pass for every traveler to Venice. For starters, there isn’t just one pass. You can customize the itinerary to include museums, a gondola ride , vaporetti (water bus) rides, and so much more.

It’s essentially the same as the Venezia Unica pass but not issued by the city, so you can add things such as a gondola ride or a food tour.

You will need to book the date and time to enter sites such as the Doge’s Palace, so planning is essential. When your time is limited in Venice, this is the best way to do things. What you lose by not being spontaneous, you gain by making your time in Venice more manageable and relaxing.

use the Venice pass to book a gondola ride

What the Venice City Pass includes:

  • Gain priority access to the Basilica of San Marco , featuring the Pala D’Oro with its precious stones, rooftop terrace, and the San Marco museum
  • Fast track entrance to the Doge’s Palace
  • Explore three Piazza San Marco museums: Museo Correr, National Archaeological Museum, and Marciana National Library
  • Choose a classic Gondola Ride or opt for this combo ticket without it
  • Venice city tour app with audio guide included
  • Enjoy a 10% savings on select attractions and excursions

Venice Discovery Pass

Experience the best of Venice without the hassle of waiting in long ticket queues. Simply obtain your Venice Discovery Pass before your trip, and all you need is your phone to access the famous attractions!

  • Doge’s Palac e: Fast Track – Step back in time and delve into the history and culture of the City of Masks as you enter Doge’s Palace. Marvel at the opulent rooms adorned by the works of artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto. This ticket allows you to bypass the lengthy queue and enter quickly.
  • Public transport in Venice : 24 – 72 Hours – This convenient ticket provides unlimited access to the ‘vaporetti’ (water-buses) in Venice, Lido, and the lagoon islands, as well as buses in Mestre and Marghera. Choose from 24, 48, or 72-hour options.
  • Chorus Pass : Explore 15 of the most exceptional examples of sacred architecture in the city. Admire Tintoretto and Rubens’ paintings in the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, and witness original Dominican structures, among others.
  • Alilaguna Boat Transfer from Venice Airport to Venice City : The one-way Alilaguna Boat Transfer is the ideal way to travel from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Venice city. Select any of the three boat lines connecting the airport to the city center, as well as Lido, Murano, and Rialto.
  • Welcome To Venice Self-Guided Audio Tour : Narrated by a local historian, this Venetian exploration uncovers the history of iconic architecture and delves into the culture as you stroll at your leisure. Discover the captivating Palazzo Ducale, uncover the secrets of the Basilica di San Marco, and amble around the Rialto Bridge.

Venice discovery pass gets you to the city center from the airport

Venice Pass for Transportation

Getting around in Venice by vaporetto (Water Bus), water taxi, tram, or going to the various islands in the lagoon can be very expensive. For instance, a typical ticket for the vaporetto is 9.50 euro and lasts 75 minutes. This means that if you were to take the vaporetto from the train station to St. Mark’s Square, you would have to buy another ticket to take another one to another destination for an additional 9.50 euro.

save time with a water taxi

The water taxi from the airport to the historic center is an invigorating and exciting way to enter the city, but will also cost you over 100 euro.

Buying the various passes available for transportation is a good idea and will make your life much easier as well as save you some money.

There are different passes available that will suit your needs, so take a look below to find the right one for your length of time in Venice as well as your transportation needs.

ACTV Public transport card

What you get with a 1, 2, or 3 day pass:

  • Unlimited use of the public transportation services (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Unlimited use of the water-buses and buses in Lido, the lagoon islands, Mestre and Marghera
  • Unlimited use of train R and RV in the municipality of Venice (only if option 1 day Ticket + Trenitalia is selected)

N.B. I don’t recommend getting the 75 minute pass since it is exactly the same as the single trip ticket you can buy at any ticket machine for less money.

You can buy a pass at any of the vaporetto stops or at the ticket booths in front of the major sites like the train station and St Mark’s Square.

vaporetto ticket booth in front of train station

Water Taxi from Marco Polo Airport to Venice + ACTV 24 – 72-Hour Transport

When you are coming from the airport to get to the historic center, I highly recommend this Venice pass. It is convenient and saves a lot of money.

What the pass includes:

  • Unlimited use of the public transport (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Water taxi from Venice Airport to city center (shared transfer)
  • Luggage transfer

If you end up going to the beach or casino on the Lido, for instance, you will use the pass both for the vaporetto to get to the island and for the buses on the island to get around easily and quickly.

Alternatively, if you decide to head to Mestre for any reason, you can take one of the trams with the pass at no extra charge.

Chorus Pass

The Chorus Church Pass in Venice is a fantastic way to explore some of the most stunning churches in the city while saving money. With one pass, visitors can access 18 churches, including famous landmarks such as the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and the Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto.

san trovaso, san marco. santa maria formosa

Aside from the cost savings, the Chorus Church Pass also offers other benefits. For instance, it allows visitors to bypass long lines at individual church entrances, as they can simply show their pass to gain entry. Better still, the pass lasts for a year from when you redeem it, meaning visitors can use it to explore the churches at their own pace over multiple days or even weeks.

Additionally, the Chorus Church Pass provides a rich cultural and historical experience, giving visitors the chance to admire exquisite artwork, intricate architecture, and learn about the history of each church, which spans over centuries. Buying a Chorus Church Pass is an excellent investment for anyone who wishes to explore the religious and cultural heritage of Venice while saving money and enjoying a hassle-free experience.

The Chorus Pass includes access to all of these important churches :

1 – Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

One of the largest churches in Venice, the Frari is a must-see for art lovers with its collection of works by Titian, Bellini, and Donatello, among others. Don’t let the austere exterior fool you. The interior is as sumptuous as the exterior is plain.

2 – Church of Santa Maria del Giglio

This church, also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo, features a beautiful Baroque facade and interior with works by artists such as Tiepolo and Piazzetta.

3 – Church of Santo Stefano

A small, charming church in the San Marco district, Santo Stefano houses works by Tintoretto, Veronese, and Palma il Giovane.

4 – Church of Santa Maria Formosa

Built in the 15th century, this church has a unique exterior and features a collection of paintings by artists such as Bellini and Tintoretto.

5 – Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli

This church, often referred to as the “marble church,” boasts a stunning facade entirely covered in white and pink marble, with intricate sculptural details.

6 – Church of San Giovanni Elemosinario

A small but noteworthy church in the San Polo district, San Giovanni Elemosinario features works by Palma il Giovane and the Veronese brothers.

7 – Church of San Polo

Located in the heart of the San Polo district, this church features a striking Gothic facade and houses works by Tintoretto and Palma il Giovane.

8 – Church of San Giacomo dall’Orio

This church, located in the Santa Croce district, is a fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture and houses works by Palma il Giovane and Carpaccio.

9 – Church of San Stae

A grand Baroque church located in the Santa Croce district, San Stae features works by Tiepolo and a unique organ with 5,000 pipes.

10 – Church of Sant’Alvise

This church in the Cannaregio district is known for its striking facade and for housing works by the Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

11 – Basilica of San Pietro di Castello

Once the cathedral of Venice, this basilica features a mix of architectural styles and houses works by artists such as Carpaccio and Tintoretto.

12 – Church of the Santissimo Redentore

A beautiful church located on the island of Giudecca, the Redentore was built as a thanksgiving for the end of the plague and features works by Paolo Veronese.

13 – Church of Santa Maria del Rosario

Also known as the Gesuati, this church in the Dorsoduro district features a grand Baroque facade and interior and houses works by Tiepolo and Tintoretto.

14 – Church of San Sebastiano

Decorated by Veronese with frescoes and canvases, this church is located in the Dorsoduro district and is known for its art collection and unique oval-shaped nave.

15 – Church of San Giobbe

This church in the Cannaregio district features a simple, elegant facade and houses works by Bellini, Titian, and Palma il Giovane.

16 – Church of San Giuseppe di Castello

Located on the island of San Pietro, this church is known for its impressive bell tower and for housing works by the Venetian artist Jacopo Tintoretto.

17 – Church of San Vidal

A small church located near the Accademia Bridge, San Vidal is known for its collection of musical instruments and for hosting classical music concerts.

18 – Church of San Giacomo di Rialto

This church in the San Polo district is believed to be the oldest church in Venice and is known for its simple facade and Byzantine-style interior.

Cost Savings: If you plan to visit several churches during your stay in Venice, the Chorus Venezia pass is a worthwhile investment. Without the pass, each of the listed churches charges €3 (US$3.30) for admission. Purchasing the pass is a good idea, as it allows you to visit at least five churches at a discounted rate. The more churches you visit, the more value the pass provides. You may not have time to see all 18 churches, but you have the option to see as many as you like.

Venice Museum Pass

Venice is a city steeped in history and culture, and its museums offer a fascinating glimpse into its rich past. From art to architecture, there’s something for everyone in the city’s many museums.

use the Venice museum pass to get into museo correr

Visiting the significant museums in Venice is a great way to immerse yourself in the city’s unique history and culture. Whether you’re an art lover , a history buff, or simply curious about this fascinating city, the museums of Venice are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The Venice Museum Pass is a fantastic value. Essentially you get the same experience as the Venezia Unica pass with skip the line entry to the Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica and its museums, and the Museum Correr among others. In addition, you also get full access to all of the 18 participating churches of the Chorus Pass, as well as these other participating museums:

murano glass museum

  • Ca’ Rezzonico
  • Carlo Goldoni’s House
  • Mocenigo Palace
  • Ca’ Pesaro (Modern Art Gallery and Oriental Art Gallery)
  • Glass Museum (Murano)
  • Lace Museum (Burano)
  • Natural History Museum

If you plan to spend 3 days in Venice, then this provides excellent value. However, if you are only there for a day, there won’t be enough time to make this pass worth it.

Although you won’t get free entry into the non civic museums, there are often discounts. For instance, you will save around 40% off the ticket to enter the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

N.B. If you order this online, which I recommend, you will need to exchange the voucher for a physical ticket at one of the tourist information offices around the city.

Here are the spots with opening hours where you can make the exchange:

  • Marco Polo Airport boat departure pier (open 7:45 AM – 12:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office, in front of Giardinetti Reali in San Marco (open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office at the railway station (open 8:30 AM – 2:20 PM)
  • Tronchetto InterParking (open 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Wrapping It Up

There are millions of tourists who leave Venice overwhelmed and exhausted, and, yet, they still didn’t scratch the surface of what the city offers. When you have a plan and strategy to visit the city, you get far more out of it.

Those that get passes are the ones who often leave feeling fulfilled and satisfied that they enjoyed the city to its fullest with the time they had.

Be one of those tourists who remembers the trip fondly and not one who wasted time in lines and paid too much for pretty much everything.

With this guide we’ll be looking at the different city passes, their costs and what’s included in each pass so you can make the most of your time in Venice.

What is a Venice City Pass?

The Venice City Pass is a tourist card that gives you access to the best museums of the city and/or unlimited public transport rides .

To take advantage of the best things to do in Venice you’ll find that the visitor’s pass is the best investment you can do if you want to experience this city to the max.

No matter whether it’s to make the most of its cultural and historical offer or simply use public transport to navigate the city and nearby islands.

But which pass is the best pass for you? Let me help you!

For a start, ask yourself two questions to understand if these passes might be right for you or you should explore other options:

  • Am I interested/do I have the time to visit more than 3 museums? Write a list of the attractions you really want to visit , then their entrance ticket prices and compare the city pass offer with the total you would spend to visit your chosen museums.
  • Do I need to use public transport to move around multiple times every day or I rather explore the city on foot?

You can purchase your museums and transportation Venice city passes from the Venezia Unica website or from Venezia Unica ticket points in Venice.

If you purchase your city pass online, you’ll receive a voucher via email with a booking code (PNR). You can use the voucher straight away to get access to the city’s attractions and museums.

The Venice city pass is worth it, as long as you study beforehands the right city pass for you and your travel plans.

See below a couple of advantages that offers the city pass:

  • The Venice city pass allows you to save up to 20% on the services included. If you’re serious and really mean to visit all the attractions included in the pass, you can save a lot.
  • There are discounted rates for junior travellers (between the age of 6 and 29), families (at least 2 adults and 1 child) and senior travellers (over 65).
  • Extra benefits and discounts in selected city’s businesses. For example, glass blowing demonstrations in Murano and their glass artworks you can buy, paintings from local art galleries, Venetian masks, Illy coffee and ice cream from Grom and much, much more.

How much time do you need in Venice?

You need ideally 3 days in Venice . I believe, that with 3 days you can easily cover Venice’s most popular attractions, have a bit of time to enjoy the city at a slower pace and explore some of its less touristy sights.

Moving around Venice on foot can be quite exhausting, with all the bridges you have to constantly cross and in particular if you’re carrying heavy luggage.

The good news is that you can always rely on the public network system owned by the local public transport company ACTV .

The ACTV transport passes are ideal for travellers that are planning to use more than a couple of times the following means of transport:

  • People Mover

Let’s take a look at the different ACTV city transport passes you can purchase that guarantee unrestricted access to almost all ACTV services :

  • Tickets must be validated before boarding public transport.
  • ACTV Services from / to Marco Polo Airport, water bus line 16, Alilaguna and ATVO lines are NOT included on the ticket/pass.
  • The Venezia Daily Pass (1 Day Pass) also gives access to Trenitalia train service on Regional (R) and Fast Regional (RV) trains within the territory of the municipality of Venice.
  • 3 pieces of luggage per person included in the price of the ticket/pass.
  • Download or view the interactive map of the waterborne routes (vaporetto map) here .

On the Venezia Unica website you can also purchase the Alilaguna transport pass . Alilaguna is another local public transport company, popular for providing the water bus service from and to the Marco Polo airport .

  • When you buy your pass online, you’ll receive a voucher that MUST be converted into a regular pass to be able to board the water buses. You can do that at the Alilaguna ticket offices. (There’s no ticket office in Murano so make sure to convert the voucher in other offices in Venice or at the airport!)
  • The pass includes round trip ride Airport-Lido of Venice/Venice and Cruise Terminal.

Finally, it’s worth knowing that you also have the option to buy the ACTV ticket or pass that includes transfers from/to the Marco Polo airport and Treviso airport.

As you look closer you will find that there are different Museum passes you can choose from , based on your travel plans and interests while visiting Venice.

See a comprehensive table for each Museum pass available for purchase:

St. Mark’s City Pass

The San Marco City Pass is the best city pass if you have 2 or 3 days to spend in Venice and your priority is to visit the main attractions based in St. Mark’s Square.

  • Doge’s Palace and the other 3 St. Mark’s Square Museums;
  • 3 Chorus Churches: Santa Maria del Giglio, Sacred Art Museum, Santo Stefano and Santa Maria Formosa;
  • Querini Stampalia Foundation;

You can also purchase the San Marco city pass + La Fenice tour. You get free access to the same attractions + the guided tour of La Fenice theatre with audio guide for an extra 10 euros. Why not read more about St Mark’s Square while here?

  • Free entrance to disabled people and carer.

Useful things to know:

At this point, you should have a clear idea of all the Venice city passes available.

Before you purchase a city pass, take time to understand which Venice attractions you’re interested in visiting and available time to make the most of your pass.

If you’re a first time visitor I’d personally recommend the St. Mark’s Square Museums pass. Then to purchase a skip-the-line ticket to visit St. Mark’s Basilica separately, or, alternatively, the St. Mark’s Campanile ticket to help you save time.

Also, I highly suggest that you check both the ACTV vaporetto and Alilaguna lines and see what’s the most convenient pass for your particular itinerary (remember that Alilaguna includes transport from/to the airport!).

Venezia Unica Tourist City Pass provided by Venezia Unica

The Vacation Wingman

Is the Venice Pass Worth It?

Almost all major cities have major sightseeing passes ( Paris Pass , New York Pass, London Pass, etc.). Venice is no different. For those going to Venice (see our post on a 3-day trip to Venice and the 10-Day North Italy Itinerary ), you will definitely wonder if this is a way to save money on the sights that you want to see. These passes typically include a very long list of attractions. Organizers advertise them as saving travelers a lot of money. However, the reality is that they don’t generally save you nearly what they advertise. The question still remains – does it actually save you money? We will attempt to answer the question “Is the Venice Pass Worth It?” below.

Overview of the Venice Pass

First, there are at least three different organizations selling tickets that would be considered a Venice Pass. Overall, all three sellers advertise their products as pre-purchased tickets that bundle and save the visitor money. Most of them also advertise skip-the-line access since you already have a ticket for many attractions. Each offering has a sizeable number of attractions/locations available.

Venice Pass Worth It - Venezia City Pass

Venezia City Pass

The most comprehensive Venice Pass is the Venezia City Pass . The Venezia City Pass comes in three tiers (Starter, Classic, and Complete) that offer entrance from 10 up to 34 unique locations. The Starter Pass includes popular attractions like Doge’s Palace, a Grand Canal tour, Leonardo Da Vinci Museum, and Scala Contarini. An upgrade to the Classic Pass includes attractions like a gondola ride, an island tour of Murano, Burano, & Torcello, a tour of Teatro La Fenice, and many churches (not including St. Mark’s). The largest pass, the Complete Venezia City Pass, adds some additional art, glass-making, and lace-making museums.

Venice Pass Worth It - The Venice Pass

The Venice Pass

The next Venice Pass is named just that – The Venice Pass . In keeping with the basic name, this pass also has the most basic list of inclusions. The pass includes an entrance to the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello, the Church of Sant’Alvise, the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoil, Leonardo’s Machines Museum, and the Glass Cathedral of Santa Chiara Murano. If you have read our 3-day Venice trip suggested itinerary , you will see that none of these attractions appear on our list. The pass does include a 1-day unlimited Venice public transportation pass. However, the city of Venice sells this same transport pass for about €20. Therefore, the €99 cost isn’t a great deal any way you look at it. We won’t consider this pass in the remainder of this post.

Venice Pass Worth It - Venezia Unica

Venezia Unica

The final Venice Pass is the Venezia Unica City Pass . The city of Venice (and not a private company) sells this pass. There are two parts of this pass that we need to analyze. The first component is a traditional city pass that bundles several tickets together for an advertised discount price. Like the Venice Pass above, this pass offers a very limited selection of attractions. The only ones of note are the Doge’s Palace, some St. Mark’s Square museums, and a Teatro La Fenice tour. If these are the only attractions you’ll use from the pass, the pass’s €47.90 (without Teatro La Fenice) or €57.90 (with Teatro La Fenice) price tags aren’t worth it.

The second (and more unique) part of the pass is a bundling of city services. The city services that can be purchased include airport transfers, public transit within Venice, parking, public toilet entrance, and public Wi-Fi service. Venezia Unica doesn’t offer any of these services at a discount over purchasing them at the point of sale. However, you can purchase them online ahead of time and save yourself the need to stand in a ticket line in several places. Venezia Unica offers the city services part of this pass alone without the attractions bundle described above. This part of the card is worth a consideration if you are fairly certain of your plans and want to streamline the transportation and services part of your trip.

Using the Venice Pass

Given that the Venezia City Pass is the only pass that may still have some value to visitors, that is the only one reviewed below. Using this pass is fairly simple. After purchase, it is sent to you via email. This pass should be printed out upon receipt. While some attractions will take a digital version from a phone or tablet, some places will want to see the hard copy.

To get a ticket to an attraction, you simply show up at the first attraction that you want to use it at. The attraction will scan the pass to ensure it is valid and provide a ticket to the attraction for no additional charge. Once the pass has been scanned at the first attraction, the validity period starts. The pass is only good for 7 days from the time of first scan. This should be plenty of time as most people don’t stay in Venice that long.

Finally, the Venezia City Pass does include the fare for some attractions that require reservations. The pass does not excuse the visitor from the requirement of making a reservation. Therefore, visitors will need to make a free reservation with the attraction by selecting the Free Venezia City Pass option when making the reservation. This can be confusing for some who believe that the city pass takes care of everything. Do some research on the places you want to visit to ensure this won’t be an issue for you.

venezia unica tourist pass

Analysis – 3-Day Venice Scenario

Finally, we will look at a scenario as if we were getting the Venezia City Pass. It should be obvious that if you are going to all places the ticket grants access to the pass is a good deal. However, I would guess that almost 100% of people who buy the pass are not able to go to all the attractions on the pass. Therefore, as a real-life test, we will compare the Venezia City Pass against our 3-Day Venice Itinerary .

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of overlap between our list of best attractions and what the Venezia City Pass covers. The Venezia City Pass includes the Doge’s Palace, a Grand Canal tour, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and a tour of the Teatro La Fenice (if purchasing the Classic Pass). In our specific scenario, the Starter Venezia City Pass provides €48.50 in ticket benefits costs but costs €74.90/pass upfront. Therefore, purchasing the Starter Pass is a bad deal. It costs the traveler €26.40 per person more than if the tickets were purchased directly from each site. Similarly, the Classic Venezia City Pass provides €59.50 in ticket benefits but costs €99.90. That’s an extra €40.40 per person paid in unnecessary ticket costs. No matter how you look at it, the Venezia City Pass is not a good purchase if you are doing our 3-Day Venice Itinerary .

*The Grand Canal Tour in the 3-Day Venice itinerary is actually a ride on the main Venice city ferry at sunset. This is included in a 48-hour ferry pass which will still be required for other tasks so €7.50 isn’t actually being saved. However, the Grand Canal Tour offered by the Venezia City Pass is more of a guided tour. Therefore, you may get a little more value out of it.

Why Isn’t Venezia City Pass a Good Deal?

There are two major reasons this isn’t a good buy. First, the attractions covered aren’t all the major ones. Notably absent from the covered items are St. Mark’s Basilica, San Giorgio Maggiore, Gallerie dell’Accademia, and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. Second, the pass is valid for 7 days, and no shorter time frames can be purchased. A three-day itinerary does not take advantage of this fact. If you were going to be in Venice for a full week (or close to it), I imagine that the math would change. Several of the lesser-known and visited attractions that are included would be on itineraries for those who are in Venice for a whole week.
