Darren Hayes announces ‘Do You Remember?’ Australian tour dates

The singer will be celebrating 25 years of Savage Garden

Darren Hayes

Darren Hayes has announced his first Australian tour in over a decade, slating a six-date run of shows for January and February of 2023.

The ‘Do You Remember?’ tour, announced today (March 2), will belatedly commemorate 25 years since Hayes rose to prominence as one half of pop duo Savage Garden . Across two studio albums, Hayes and instrumentalist Darren Jones achieved three Number One singles – the last of which, 1999’s ‘I Knew I Loved You’, was the last song by an Australian to top the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 years before the success of Gotye ‘s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’.

In addition to performing Savage Garden’s biggest hits, the ‘Do You Remember?’ tour will also see Hayes reportedly reunite with musicians that played in the duo’s touring band from 1996.

The tour also celebrates Hayes’ return to making music after a lengthy hiatus, with ‘Do You Remember?’ also serving as the title of a forthcoming single. It will mark Hayes’ second single for the year, following ‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ from January. Hayes has only made sporadic appearances since the release of his 2011 album ‘Secret Codes And Battleships’, including a duet with Cub Sport on the 2019 single ‘I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life’.

In a press statement, Hayes expressed excitement at the prospect of returning to the live arena after a period of inactivity.

“After almost a decade out of the spotlight and all this time in lockdown, I found myself really missing the electric feeling that only a live audience can bring,” he said. “After 25 years in the music industry, I feel like we’ve grown up together. To sing these songs again, after all we’ve been through, is going to feel like a family reunion.”

Darren Hayes To Play Savage Garden Hits On First Australian Tour In 11 Years

By August Billy

Blink and you’ll miss a decade – Darren Hayes is back making music and the pop icon has now announced the six-date ‘Do You Remember?’ Australian tour, scheduled for late January and early Feb, 2023.

It’s the former Savage Garden singer’s return to live shows after a more than ten-year hiatus. Hayes’ last Australian headline tour was a three-date run following the release of his fourth solo album, Secret Codes and Battleships, in November 2011. The upcoming tour gets its name from Hayes’ next solo single, out later this month.

The tour is subtitled “Celebrating 25 Years Of Savage Garden, Solo Hits And More!” And indeed, while Savage Garden formed closer to 30 years ago, the Brisbane duo’s self-titled debut album will celebrate its 25 th anniversary this Friday, 4 th March.

The record was a smash hit, topping the charts locally and reaching #2 in the UK and #3 in the USA. It’s been certified 12-times Platinum in Australia and seven-times Platinum in the USA. Eight singles were lifted from the release, including ‘I Want You’, ‘To The Moon and Back’, ‘Break Me Shake Me’ and ‘Truly Madly Deeply’.

‘Truly Madly Deeply’ became the first Australian single to reach number one in the United States since INXS’ ‘Need You Tonight’ ten years previous. The duo of Hayes and Daniel Jones returned to the top of the chart just two years later with ‘I Knew I Loved You’, from their second and final album, Affirmation .

Hayes commenced his solo career in 2002 with the single ‘Insatiable’ and the corresponding album,  Spin . He released  The Tension and the Spark  in 2004 and  This Delicate Thing We’ve Made  in 2007. He returned this January with the single, ‘Let’s Try Being in Love’. Find that below, along with all upcoming tour dates.

“ You never know how much you love something until it’s taken away from you ,” Darren Hayes said . “ After almost a decade out of the spotlight and all this time in lockdown I found myself really missing the electric feeling that only a live audience can bring. After 25 years in the music industry, I feel like we’ve grown up together. To sing these songs again after all we’ve been through is going to feel like a family reunion. I’m beyond excited to return .”

Paul Dainty, President and CEO of TEG DAINTY, said , “ What a thrill it is to announce that we are touring Darren Hayes next year! Savage Garden didn’t just dominate the Australian music landscape, they were global superstars who topped the charts all over the world and broke chart records on an international scale. Only a handful of artists achieve the kind of longevity and continued global success that Darren enjoys, both through his work with Savage Garden and ongoing solo career. We can’t wait to welcome this national treasure back to Australian stages after a ten-year absence and experience his outstanding catalogue of songs in a live setting.”

2022 is shaping up to be a momentous year for Darren as he celebrates 25 years since the release of Savage Garden’s chart-topping, 10x ARIA Award-winning debut self-titled album and also 20 years as a solo artist. Earlier this year, Darren returned to the Australian charts with his first new solo single release in a decade: ‘ Let’s Try Being In Love’ – an upbeat, electro-pop dance anthem and his most personal song to date. Next week, fans will be gifted another taste in the form of a second single (and tour namesake), ‘Do You Remember? ’.

Just like his musical heroes George Michael and Prince, Darren has produced, arranged and composed new music entirely on his own, to be performed for the first time live on the ‘Do You Remember?’ tour.

The world-class calibre of Savage Garden ’s songs is undeniable: I Want You (1996’s best-selling single by an Australian artist), To The Moon And Back , Truly Madly Deeply (1997’s best-selling single by an Australian artist, which set a record for the longest time any single in history spent in the U.S. Hot Adult Contemporary chart – 23 weeks in total!), I Knew I Loved You , Affirmation – all songs that have soundtracked our lives and inspired future songwriters.

When you add Darren’s astounding solo output – including a string of hit singles such as Insatiable , Pop!ular and So Beautiful – to the equation, the stats don’t lie: 30 million albums sold globally, 2x chart-topping singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, 14x ARIA Awards, 10x APRA songwriting awards, 5x Top 10 albums and 9x Top 10 singles to date.

Other early career highlights for Darren include performing O Sole Mio in concert with Luciano Pavarotti and Savage Garden’s star turn at the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing ceremony, where the duo performed the glorious Affirmation .

Over the last couple of years, Darren has also released a number of standalone tracks and collaborations – including I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life (2019) with Brisbane indie band Cub Sport and Cold To Me (2021) with UK producer/DJ Louis La Roche (2021) – which introduced his brilliance to a whole new generation of fans.

Darren’s return to the stage is sure to remind Australian audiences that this national treasure is not only a prolific hitmaker, but also a consummate performer. With a setlist honouring a quarter-century of hits, Darren will perform a mix of classic fan favourites and new solo material while also paying special tribute to the 25th anniversary of Savage Garden’s chart-topping, self-titled debut album in a pop show specifically designed to bring crowds to their feet.

The ‘Do You Remember?’ Tour production was created by U2’s legendary show director Willie Williams and will see Darren reuniting with members of his original touring band from 1996.

Fans will embark on a journey from the first time they ever heard the phrase “Chica Cherry Cola” all the way through to the present day. And Darren promises to deliver the perfect mix of nostalgia and modernity, performing his songs with the emotional depth and theatricality they so richly deserve.

“ Whether you bought the first Savage Garden album on cassette or you’re a diehard fan of my solo work, I want to offer an escape ,” Darren says. “ Come to remember, come to forget, come to fall in love .”

After ten years living abroad, Darren finally returns to our shores – out and proud – to headline Sydney’s Mardi Gras parade at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 5 March, 2022.

It’s been way too long since Darren Hayes last graced Australian stages, and he’s never been more excited to perform live, as his fabulous full self, on the   ‘ Do You Remember?’ Tour – 25 Years Of Savage Garden, Solo Hits And More! The healing power of live music experienced en masse – complete with singalong moments and plenty of opportunities for dancing – is undeniable. You don’t want to snooze on this joyous celebration of life and self-acceptance! Fans are encouraged to secure tickets early to avoid disappointment.

LIVE REVIEW: Darren Hayes with special guest Bachelor Girl at RAC Arena

darren hayes tour perth

It is a Tuesday night in Perth city, it is busier than usual with a hint of excitement, kick off for this amazing 27 date tour starts here in Perth. In the west we seem to be skipped over for international grade Artists, but this is one of our own….. many of us have grown up with this icon’s music in our lives and we are keen to share a moment with Darren Hayes at RAC arena.

This tour has been 10+ years in the making, residing in LA it had been quite a while since Darren had graced our shores, fans were thirsty, eager to indulge in musical time travel and re-live just what Darren’s music meant to them.

The support for the evening was Bachelor Girl – another lyrical chapter of my upbringing. I don’t know anyone that has not sung along to the catchy tunes of a this original talented duo. The crowd was littered with smiles when Tania and James swanned onto the stage with the rest of the band, an intimate setting guaranteeing that tonight’s performance was going to be personal and memorable. Tania smashed it out of the park, note after note of classics coupled with plenty of crowd interaction the night is off to a cracking pace. Highlights for me – ‘Treat Me Good’ the crowd singing along was amazing, ‘Permission To Shine’ one of my favourites and I was not alone in singing it. I loved the new song ‘Calling Out Your Name’ being released on the 3 rd Feb (we got a sneaky live version of that) and I loved just how beautiful Tania looked in that sequined jump-suit plus the dapper James (that velvet suit jacket was on point). An amazing opening performance from this slick outfit that sound amazing.

darren hayes tour perth

The change over was quick, fans had scrambled back from the bar, drinks in hand with smiles still plastered over their faces. The lights dipped and the arrival of the Darren Hayes Train had hit Perth Station….. express, no stops!!! This train was filled with hits ranging from his solo career including his last 5 studio albums – the latest being ‘Homosexual’ and a bevy of Savage Garden tracks. The fans were in for a 2-hour treat.

For me this ride was a mixture of release, acceptance and enjoyment. Darren looked at ease on stage, born in the moment, a natural performer one could almost believe it was an easy journey for him but he left the door ajar for just a moment during the performance – the crack in the doorway allowed an emotive story to spill out about his struggle with the break up of his first marriage. It was a touching reminder that artists are human as well – sometimes we as fans forget.

There was a healthy balance of crowd interaction and theatrical story telling to keep the fans engaged. He owned that stage and performed on it like it was a rental, there was no way that he was getting his deposit back and quite frankly he didn’t care – he just wanted to share the moment with his loyal supporters and leave everything at the door. 2 hours of hits with a few costume changes in the mix kept us all guessing, along with an occasional random telephone call (you will need to catch the next gig for that one to make any sense).

darren hayes tour perth

Highlights for me throughout the performance – I can’t go past ‘The Animal Song’ and the ‘To the Moon and Back’ which were early in the set. ‘Insatiable’ was a crowd favourite along with the ever popular ‘I Knew I Loved You’ and the arena erupted when ‘Break Me, Shake Me’ was belted out of the speakers but the encore produced the goosebump moment for me of the Darren Hayes train ride……..there was no one in their seat for ‘I Want You’, all the faithful were dancing and singing along having the time of their lives.

All in all Darren’s vocals were just outstanding, as good as I remembered last time, his stage presents was captivating, story telling and crowd engagement superior and I felt like this is where he needed to be, on a stage being himself… just that damn entertaining. You can see why he is one of Australia’s most successful artists. I can strong recommend this show, catch it while you can, you will be bitterly disappointed if you don’t!!!

Just 6 nostalgic things everyone needs to immediately remember about Darren Hayes.

Shona Hendley

It was 1997. I was in my best friend’s house after school, inside her lounge room, and we were both singing into water bottles. Over the course of the next hour or so, we would belt out the 12 songs from Savage Garden’s iconic, multi-million-selling and award-winning self-titled album. The following day and the one after that, for months and months, we did the same thing.

Two years later, when Affirmation , their second and final album was released, our nightly performances recommenced. On this album, Two Beds and a Coffee Machine , was always a favourite and a giveaway we were huge Savage Garden fans. The fact that I still have it on my go-to playlist today, is a sign that I still am.

While Savage Garden’s albums may have been the soundtrack of mine and millions of others' youth, Darren Hayes’ career as a single artist, particularly his hit, Insatiable is a part of the soundtrack of my adulthood.

And with the Do You Remember?  tour coming early in 2023, my nostalgia has been reignited and I am insatiably ready to reminisce on some of Hayes' iconic moments.

Starting in Perth and touring nationally between January and February 2023, the show promises to bring the crowds to their feet and no doubt singing along – all while nestling into some fuzzy and nostalgic vibes.

Here are six Darren Hayes things you need to remember immediately.

1. Savage Garden.

With nostalgia, what better place to begin than at the beginning? And what a beginning Hayes had.

As the lead singer of the duo Savage Garden, alongside musician David Johns, the release of their self-titled album in 1997 made a phenomenal impact on the Australian music industry and will forever be known as one of the most successful Aussie albums of all time.

Selling over 12 million copies worldwide and winning 10 ARIA Awards, the iconic album was not only a huge success but also saw the duo skyrocket to fame.

Savage Garden (the album), which is now 25 years old included some of their best-known songs such as Truly, Madly Deeply , along with the “Chica Cherry Cola” of I Want You and of course, To the Moon and Back , and Break Me, Shake Me .

Its black and white album cover also remains firmly imprinted in my mind.

2. Affirmation : The final album of Savage Garden.

The duo’s second (and what would inevitably be their final) album, Affirmation was released in 1999 and with it, another 12 absolutely phenomenal songs that really showcased the songwriting talent of both Hayes and Jones.

Produced by Walter Afanasieff (who famously produced Mariah Carey’s Hero ), the album brought with it huge hits (and became the music to my mid-high school years), including tracks like I Knew I Loved You (one of my all-time favourites), Affirmation and The Animal Song .

The Animal Song is also featured in the film starring Juliette Lewis, The Other Sister and of course, I Knew I Loved You ’s music video famously starred Kirsten Dunst.

3. 2003 ARIA Awards.

Ah, this moment. This moment.

I had tears when it happened and watching it back, I had them again.

When Hayes performed an acoustic version of Delta Goodrem’s hit, Lost Without You at the ARIAs, a tribute to Goodrem who was fighting cancer at the time, not only was it just incredibly sentimental and sweet but the performance itself was amazing.

The standing ovation and emotional reaction from the audience speak for themselves.

4. ~That~ Kath & Kim  moment.

I love when icons join forces to create a masterpiece that no one could have ever envisioned.

This is exactly what the Aussie comedy show, Kath & Kim did when Kath (Jane Turner) and Kel (Glenn Robbins) danced to Hayes’ romantic hit, Insatiable in what became a memorable television moment.

My husband (perhaps not as iconic, to others at least) also loves a great Insatiable moment on karaoke and I can testify that it is nearly as epic as that scene in Kath & Kim .

5. Darren Hayes and Gary Barlow’s lockdown duet.

Speaking of duos, when Hayes teamed up with Take That’s Gary Barlow in 2021 to sing Savage Garden’s ballad, I Knew I Loved You , well quite frankly, OMG.

Recorded as a part of Barlow’s Crooner Sessions, which he began during the first UK lockdowns in 2020, the two performers brought their A-game and a real sense of authenticity to the performance.

I dare say it also created many more Hayes fans.

6. The new album and upcoming tour.

Hayes released his most recent album, Homosexual which is his fifth solo studio album, in October this year.

He headlined the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mari Gras with his debut single from the album, Let’s Try Being in Love at the event and hinted that the best is yet to come, with his nostalgic performances of some of Savage Garden’s biggest hits.

These hits will form a critical part of his upcoming, the  Do You Remember?  tour, produced by U2’s legendary show director Willie Williams.
