1. shukavana: where exotic birds come to roost in mysore.

For those of you who are into birding, especially parrots, Shukavana is the perfect place for you. Shukavana, on the outskirts of Mysore city, is a rehabilitation centre for birds. This hidden gem is not very well-known but should be on your list. The aviary is situated inside the sprawling Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashrama. Parrots, parakeets, lorikeets, macaws, cockatoos, and several other exotic species of birds call this a one-and-half-acre aviary home.

The aviary started with a few rescued birds, but now it is home to over 2,000 species of birds. The birds are quite friendly and you will find them happily perched on the visitors’ shoulders, arms, and heads munching on treats. The star resident, however, is Kali, a multi-lingual grey parrot. The talking parrot entertains visitors with ‘Good morning’, ‘How are you’ and ‘ Om Namah Shivaya’. The parrot also speaks a few sentences in Kannada and Telugu as well. If you want to get up close and personal with some exotic species of birds from across the world, a visit to Shukavana is a must.

The parrot park is the best thing to do in Mysore for bird lovers. The aviary is open on all days of the week except Wednesday. People can visit Shukavana from 9.30 AM-12.30 PM and 3.30-5.30 PM. Shukavana charges an entry fee of INR 20 per visitor and INR 100 for a picture with the birds.

2. Karanji Kere: The Perfect Place For Picnics And Long Walks

The Karanji Kere (Karanji Lake) is another bird watcher’s paradise in the city of Mysore. The 90-hectare lake, which is surrounded by a nature park, was once a part of the Mysore Zoo. The nature park is made up of a butterfly park, the Regional Museum of Natural History, and a walk-through aviary.

The aviary, which is considered to be one of the largest aviaries in India, is home to several species of birds. Peafowl, wild geese, and even the 6-foot-tall Sarus Cranes call this aviary home along with over 147 other species of birds. The butterfly park, which has over four dozen species of butterflies, is another great attraction. It is situated on a small island in the lake. Visitors can even hire pedal boats or a boat with a boatman to go boating on the Karanji Lake. The lake is open from 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM every day except Tuesday. Visitors can enjoy the serene and tranquil surroundings of the lake for the minimal price of INR 10 per person.

3. Kishkinda Moolika Bonsai Garden: A Zen Garden In Mysore

A day spent amid nature with only exotic plants and deer for company, sounds wonderful, right? The Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashrama on Nanjangud Road is home to another wonder, the Kishkinda Moolika Bonsai Garden. Spread over four acres, the garden houses over 100 varieties of Bonsai plants. The plants are arranged according to Swami Ganapathy Sachchidananda’s spiritual beliefs.

The miniature plants are arranged in different groups and each group reflects a different Indian tradition. The bonsai plants in the Rashi Vana group apparently have a connection to the Indian Zodiac system. The Raga Vana has plants that represent Indian classical music and the plants in Nakshatra Vana represent the 27 stars in Indian astrology. The Panchayatana Vana is made up of five closely linked gardens, the plants here are representative of the Mother goddess. The last one is the Saptarishi Vana, the seven plants here represent the seven sages in Indian mythology.

The beautifully manicured bonsai garden with water bodies interspersed in between will leave you feeling zen. The deer park nearby is equally beautiful. A day in the company of these gentle animals and beautiful gardens will leave you refreshed. The entrance fee for the Bonsai Garden is INR 20 per person and timings are from 9 AM to 12 PM and 4-6 PM.

4. Melody World Wax Museum: Mysore’s Own Wax Museum

The Melody World Wax Museum is located a mere three kilometres from Mysore Palace. The museum, which has the largest collection of musical instruments in Karnataka, is set inside a 90-year-old heritage building. The collection includes over 300 kinds of musical instruments from different ages and from various parts of the country. Several indigenous musical instruments from various tribal communities are also displayed here.

The wax museum displays 110 life-size wax statues clothed in traditional attire. The musical instruments and statues are displayed to represent various bands and dance groups. The most popular ones are representations of Indian Classical music, Punjabi Bhangra, Middle East, Chinese, Tribal, Jazz and Hip Hop among others. The life-size statue of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore is one of the most popular attractions here. The museum is open from 9.30 AM to 7 PM throughout the week. The museum charges INR 30 per person and an extra INR 10 for a still camera.

If you’re a fan of perfumes and fragrances, a visit to Sandalwood Oil Factory is one of the best things to do in Mysore. The Government Sandalwood Oil Factory was established over a century ago by the Maharaja of Mysore. The iconic soap from Mysore, the Mysore Sandal soap is made at this sandalwood oil factory. A guide will take you through the factory and explain how the oil is extracted and made into a variety of products.

The process of powdering the sandalwood, boiling, distilling, condensing and extracting the oil is laborious. The whole process is worthy of appreciation. Mysore, the cultural capital of Karnataka, is famous for its glorious palace and spectacular heritage landmarks spread across the city.

I shifted to Mysore in 2019 for my job and got a chance to explore the city to the fullest.

Soon, I realized that the city has to offer more than ancient mansions and iconic buildings and there are a lot of places to visit in Mysore for nature-lovers, adrenaline-junkies, and devotees among others.

So, if you have already visited the popular tourist spots of the city, here’s a list of 6 hidden places to explore in Mysore.

Varuna Lake

Located at a distance of 10kms from the city center, Varuna Lake, managed by Outback Adventures, is the perfect gateway for water sports enthusiasts.

It hosts a bunch of thrilling activities at an affordable price throughout the year like kayaking, pedal boat, jet ski, speed boat, banana ride, zorbing, canoeing, and water trampoline.

Inaugurated during Dasara 2018, this hidden gem is a perfect escape into the lap of nature for an adventurous joyride. This scenic place also has a small lakeside café to enjoy snacks and beverages while rejuvenating with the serene surroundings.

The Shuka Vana or Parrot Park has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for housing the largest number of bird species in an aviary. It is a rehabilitation center for birds, founded by Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji in the sprawling campus of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashrama, located at a distance of 5kms from the city. More than 450 species of birds from different countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia fly around the 60-feet tall aviary to meet and greet the visitors. Originally established as a treatment shelter for injured birds, this place has now become popular for its large number of colorful and exotic avian friends like lorikeets, sun conures, Quaker parrots, macaws, and cockatoos.

Balmuri and Edmuri Falls

The twin waterfalls, located at a distance of 16kms from the city center, are a popular shooting spot for Sandalwood movies and highly adorned by the locals for a quick break. Balmuri and Edmuri Falls are artificial waterfalls, built on River Kaveri by creating 6 feet step along with the water flow, surrounded by lush greenery amidst the scenic neighborhood. The visitors can take a dip or waddle and splash through the water. During the monsoons, Coracle rides are available to drift through the water and soak in the natural beauty. Also, there are a few stalls set up near the falls which sell lip-smacking fried seafood items to be enjoyed by the visitors.

Kukkarahalli Lake

Kukkarahalli Lake is a J-shaped lake, located at a distance of 3kms from the city center and adjacent to the University of Mysore, is the lung of the city which is extremely popular among residents for walking or jogging along the 4.5km walking trail. Originally built as a source of water for irrigation to the outskirt lands, this area is home to almost 180 species of birds and also migratory birds are often spotted. One can enjoy the beauty of the lush green surrounding the backdrop of the mighty Chamundi Hills while listening to bird chirps.

GRS Fantasy Park

GRS Fantasy Park is the only amusement and water park in Mysore which is located on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway, at a distance of 7kms from the city center and a popular destination for day-out experiences. It offers a wide range of entertainment options which can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. There are Thrill Rides for the adventure enthusiasts like Aqua tornado, Pendulum Slide, Crazy Cruise, Amazonia; Family Rides for group activities like Wave Pool, Aqua Dance Floor, and Hawaiian Paradise; and Kids Rides exclusively for the young members like baby trains, play area, kids pool, etc. There is also an eatery and other essential amenities like changing room inside the premises. Recently, a snow park has come up in 2019 beside the amusement park premise where the visitors can play with snow and have the experience of being in a valley surrounded by mountains.

Venugopala Swamy Temple

The 12th century Hoysala temple has an interesting history as it was submerged underwater for almost 70 years during the construction of the KRS Dam and resurfaced during 2000 when the water level in the reservoir receded. Later during 2003-2011, under the guidance of Sri Hari Khoday, the Venugopala Swamy Temple has been relocated to its current location which is 1 km to the north of the original site near KRS Dam and 30kms away from Mysore. The architectural wonder is devoted to the worship of Lord Venugopala Swamy, who is also known as Lord Krishna. The symmetrical temple complex consists of two prakara, an outer gate, a sanctum sanctorum, the middle hall, vestibule, and main hall and it is built such that the backwaters would touch the outer walls of the complex if the KRS water level reaches the maximum capacity. The religious place can be ideally visited during sunset to enjoy the splendor view of the architecture and the surrounding.

Mysore Palace

Just like what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, Mysore Palace is to the city of Mysore. You cannot skip this beauty that was built in the 14th century. One can spend hours here just strolling in the corridors. You’ll feel like you’re a part of the royal mansion, with a journey that takes you back in time. Are you that social media addict who has to repost all of their travel experiences? Then this is just the location for all those insta-worth images. Do expect it to be relatively more crowded over the weekends.

And lastly, if you are here on a Sunday (or any public holiday), Mysore Palace will light up your evening (literally). The whole palace is illuminated with thousands of bulbs post 7 pm. The palace, lit up in the evening, makes for a whole new experience while viewing this gorgeous structure from a whole new perspective.

Cycle around the city

What better way to explore the city and at the same time burn that holiday fat. You could rent a cycle or go on a bicycle tour (INR 1,500 – INR 2,000). If you wish to do it on your own, be sure to explore some of these gorgeous sites, scattered across the city – Balmari and Edmuri falls, KRS Dam and Chamundi Hills . All these locations are quite easily accessible. Be sure to commence your journey early morning by 7am.

You will see a whole new side to this heritage town when you ride past these streets in the morning. This is a great way to gain insight into the cities local culture. Cycling past the streets and witnessing it all for yourself. A cycling tour allows you to truly explore the city as opposed to just visiting it by going to all of the popular places to visit in Mysore or the so-called tourist hot spots.

Sweat It Out To Chamundi Hills

If you feel like Mysore is a little too relaxing for you, don’t get discouraged just yet. Set out on a scenic trail, not too intense, and trek up to the Chamundi Hill. This hill can be seen from any point in Mysore and you can ask the locals how to get there. T here are about 1200 steps up this hill and once you’re at the top, soak in the picturesque view of the entire city. Beware of the monkeys at the beginning of the trail. A must try here in their Pizzas and Bruschetta. In this post I would like to share the perfect Mysore Itinerary covering the best things to do in Mysore – the top places to visit in Mysore and offbeat places around the city that you may not find in any Mysore travel brochure . At the end of the article you'll have everything you need to know to plan your own Mysore tour .

Having travelled to Mysore several times with friends and family and explored the outskirts of the cultural capital of Karnataka, I want to share my knowledge to help you plan your Mysore trip. Be it a one-day trip from Bangalore , or a 2-day Mysore itinerary or a Mysore trip plan for 3 days or more, I have it all covered.

But why is Mysore worth visiting? To answer that, let's start with some of the unique things to do in Mysore.

Mysore Itinerary for Different Durations

This is certainly not an exhaustive list of things to do in Mysore. There are many more places like the Sand Museum, Railway Museum, several other palaces-turned-hotels, temples, parks and lakes in and around Mysore. I just picked the best ones according to me. Now that you are acquainted with the best activities in Mysore let me suggest a few itineraries for you.

How to spend 1 day in Mysore

Can Mysore by covered in a day? You can do that, but you will need to pick and choose among the top attractions. Here is an itinerary for one-day trip to Mysore.

Start early around 6 am
Stop at A2B for South Indian Breakfast on the way to Mysore
You will reach Chamundi hills by 9:30 am
A short 3.6 km drive to St Philomena’s Cathedral
Another 1.6 km drive to Mysore Palace , followed by Mysore zoo nearby (optional)
Shop at Cauvery Silk
Drive 23.5 km from Mysore Zoo to Brindavan Garden

You can also book this guided Mysore Tour Package by car, for a hassle-free experience.

While all this looks doable in one day, Mysore Palace and Mysore Zoo would each take at least 2-hours to explore. On your way back to Bangalore you will have to face the traffic jams in both Mysore and Bangalore.

So, it is best to start your journey back by 5 pm from Mysore. Realistically speaking, you will need to skip either Vrindavan garden or Mysore-zoo on your day trip.

Mysore itinerary for 2 days

Day 1 in Mysore

Stop at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary in the morning
St Philomena’s Cathedral
Mysore Palace
Lunch and rest at hotel
Visit Mysore Palace to see the illumination and then shop at Cauvery

Alternatively, you can book a Mysore Heritage Walk covering Mysore Palace, Jaganmohan Art Gallery and Devraja Market in the day and a Mysore Night Walk in the evening that includes Philomena Church and Mysore Palace illumination.

Day 2 in Mysore

Visit Chamundi Hills at dawn
Have Breakfast
Head to Brindavan garden
Visit Tipu Sultan’s summer abode in Srirangapatna on your way back home

Two days is ideal if you want to reasonably explore the best of Mysore, but if you are traveling from far away, you should stay for at least 4 days in Mysore if not more.

The advantage of planning a longer trip to Mysore is that you can spend more time in each of the places, explore the beautiful city on foot, take market tours, cooking lessons and more.

My first trip to Mysore was a group tour of Mysore-Ooty over the long weekend of 15th August, back in 2014. I was new to Bangalore myself and my mom was visiting, so I wanted to plan something special. Well, the trip turned out to be quite a memorable one, for both good and terrible reasons. The organizers were unprofessional, our camera stopped working and our hotel booking which was supposed to be managed by the organizers was goofed-up. That’s a misadventure story for another day. We remember spending a bomb on silk saris for our entire family.

I visited Mysore two more times in the subsequent years every time with a different company and a slightly altered itinerary. I also visited some amazing tourist places around Mysore directly from Bangalore on our weekend road trips. Based on all the experiences I have had here are my favorite things to do in the city.

Visit the Mysore Palace

Best places to visit in Mysore - Mysore Maharaja Palace

Often called the city of palaces , Mysore is home to as many as seven royal monuments. This heritage site is the official residency of the royal family of Mysore and is definitely the top attraction of the city. The current structure was completed in 1912 after the 14th century wooden palace, a.k.a. the Old Palace was burnt during Dusshera celebrations.

The Indo-Gothic architectural style which is adopted in the Mysore Palace is a combination of Hindu temple, Mughal and Rajput and the Western Gothic architecture. There’s a beautiful temple inside the premises as well.

Mysore Palace Illumination

Visit the Mysore Palace on a Sunday or a Public Holiday between 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM to see the illuminated Mysore Palace at night. Public entry to the palace is restricted to only the West Gate during this time. This has somehow eluded me on all the trips, but I have kept this as a reason for another trip to Mysore.

Chamundi Hills and Chamundeshwari Temple

Things to do in Mysore - visit Chamundi Hills

Chamundi Hills is named after Hindu deity Chamundeshwari and has a 12th century temple atop. Nature-lovers are drawn to it for the mesmerizing views from the top of the hills while believers' throng here to seek blessings of the Goddess.

Take your binoculars to enjoy the panoramic views and spot the landmarks like the Mysore Palace. The best time to visit Chamundi hills is at the dawn or dusk. However, if you are on a day trip it will be exhausting to start so early as to reach at dawn, since none of the other attractions open before 10:00 AM.

Visiting time for Sri Chamendeshwari Temple: 7:30 am to 2 pm, 3:30 pm to 6 pm, 7:30 pm to 9 pm

Bonus: This is new information for me which I wanted to share with you. Rajendra Vilas Palace Mysore which is one of the seven palaces of the Wodeyar family in Mysore is located atop the Chamundi hill. It was a summer palace which was converted to a hotel after independence. I’ve added this to my bucket-list for a next visit.

Mysore Zoo - one of the oldest and largest zoos in India

If you ask my husband about the best place in Mysore, he will simply chime in “Mysore Zoo”. This 157-acre zoo is one of the oldest and largest zoos in India.

Established in 1892, the zoo is known for the wide range species it houses as well as the beautiful landscaping. You can hire an electric car to roam around the large zoo-campus if you want. It’s the cleanest zoo I have seen which makes sense as Mysore is indeed one of the cleanest cities in India.

Brindavan Gardens - Best places to visit in Mysore

Brindavan gardens is certainly one of the most beautiful terrace gardens in the world. No wonder many movie-directors chose this place to shoot iconic Bollywood songs in movies like Tezaab, Raja Hindustani etc. Strolling in the Brindavan Gardens is one of the most romantic things to do in Mysore.

The garden was envisioned by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Diwan of Mysore to beautify the area around the KRS dam. I actually loved the dam and boating more than the garden itself. Brindavan gardens is known not only for the colorful blossoms but also for the musical fountains. It is a great place to spend time with family and children.

Open timing: 6 am to 8 pm (all days)
Musical fountain timings: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on weekdays, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on weekends

St. Philomena’s Cathedral located in the heart of the city is one of the most impressive churches in India. It was built in 1936 in Neo-Gothic style inspired by the Cologne Cathedral of Germany. Don’t miss visiting this stunning piece of architecture on your trip to Mysore.

Shopping in Mysore

Now we come to shopping at Mysore. It’s a shame if you visit Mysore and don't check out the famous Mysore silk. You can also visit their workshop and see artisans working on the fabric. While it’s easy to get enticed by the fine displays in the shops all around Mysore especially the ones inside the Mysore Palace premises, I suggest you wait.

Visit the Cauvery Silk Emporium of Mysore for the best variety at the cheapest prices. You can also buy wooden and clay artifacts, homemade chocolates and other specialties of Mysore as souvenirs. You should also try the famous Mysore Pak – a melt-in-mouth sweet-dish of Mysore.

Eating local food at Mysore

Mysore is a great place to try authentic Kannada cuisine which is mostly vegetarian. Mysore Dosa, Idli, Upittu (commonly called Upma) and Sewaiya are some of the things you must try. Most of the dishes here are vegan-friendly. The specialty of Mysore Dosa is the gunpowder masala sprinkled on it. It's not as crispy as the Tamilian Dosa, but is rather soft in texture.

Non-vegetarians will also have several options mutton pulao at Hanumanthu mess and Biryani at Biryani haven. Don't forget to try the filter coffee at Mysore.

Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery

While most other palaces of the Wodeyar dynasty, except the Mysore Palace was converted into heritage hotels, the Jaganmohan Palace was converted into an art museum.

The palace itself is not very impressive especially after you have witnessed the grandeur of the Mysore Palace, but the art gallery is. You can skip this place in your day-trip itinerary to Mysore if you are not a connoisseur of art. However if it’s your second or third trip, or if you have one more day at Mysore, you must check this out.

Things to do around Mysore

Mysore is a city in the Mysuru district of Karnataka. While the city itself has many gems that you will need at least two days to completely explore, there are some amazing places around the city in Mysuru district. That is why I said that if you want to explore Karnataka on holiday spanning 4-7 days, you can easily choose Mysore as your base location.

It combines the best of both worlds – the ease of transport and amenities of a metropolitan city, and the authentic cultural experience of small towns, with much less crowd compared to the big cities of India. Its proximity to some of the best heritage sites and hill stations of Karnataka makes it a perfect hub for a relaxed holiday. These can also be independent day-trips or weekend trips from Bangalore if you stay there. That’s the way I explored these places,.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu Bird Sancturary - Places near Mysore

Located 19 km away from the Mysore city, the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary is a paradise for nature-lovers. It’s home to some exquisite species of birds which nest around the lake in a picturesque setting. The best time to visit the sanctuary is in the morning. You can take a boat to marvel at the exquisite avian fauna – herons, wild ducks, spoon bills, kingfishers etc. Besides the forest surrounding the lake bustles with wildflowers and large trees.

Open timing: 9 am to 6 pm
Entry fee: Rs. 50 for adults (half-price for children)
Boating charges: Rs. 50 (half-price for children) for Indians, Rs. 300 for foreign nationals

Talakadu & Somnathpura Temple

Somnathpura and Talakadu are sites with a large number of ancient temples , but most importantly they are architectural hot-spots near Bangalore which you would enjoy visiting irrespective of your faith. A trip to Talakadu and Somnathpura is like a mini-Hampi tour within 50 km from Mysore city . Talakadu was a Hindu Pilgrimage site which went under dunes of sand few hundred years ago.

You can end your trip with a magical coracle ride in the serene waters of the Cauvery. 24km from Talakadu is the Somnathpura temple. The Keshava temple of Somnathpura is a 1000-year-old architectural wonder where you can still find the intricate stone carvings intact. You can also do a day trip to Shivasamudra waterfalls .

Tipu Sultan’s Fort and Summer Palace

If you are travelling to Mysore from Bangalore you can easily stop over at Tipu Sultan’s Summer palace in Srirangapatna before you enter the city. Also known as Dariya Daulat Bagh , meaning Wealth of the Sea, the palace was the summer retreat of Tipu Sultan, one of the most revered rulers of Karnataka. You will thoroughly enjoy the beautiful interiors of this magnificent palace set in the quaint town of Srirangapatna.

Bylakuppe – The Little Tibet

Located 80 km from Mysore at the border of the districts Mysuru and Coorg lies the second largest Tibetan settlement in India , called Bylakuppe. This place is completely different from anything else you would expect in Karnataka or entire South India.

The Golden temple is the largest and most famous Buddhist monastery here. However there are quite a few smaller monasteries where you can explore freely and experience the rituals performed by the Buddhist monks. On a full day trip from Mysore you can explore Bylakuppe and also enjoy the Dubbare elephant camp and the riverside in Coorg district.

Mysore is also the gateway to the idyllic hill-stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal and Coonoor (all of which are in Tamil Nadu) if you are travelling from Bangalore. It’s a great idea to spend the whole day exploring Mysore city, staying there overnight and then drive to Tamil Nadu the next day.

How to Reach Mysore?

The best way to reach Mysore from anywhere in India is by train. Mysore is well-connected to other cities by trains like Mysore Express, Chamundi Express, Kaveri Express etc.

The nearest international airport from Mysore is the Bangalore Airport which is less than 200 km away. From Bangalore, you can reach Mysore by KSRTC bus, train or cab.

3. Chamundi Hills

This small hill is famous for 11 Th century temple. It is another renowned tourist spot here. It is very famous for a tall statue, which is built with one large rock. The temple is more famous for the mesmerizing natural beauty surrounding the temple. One need to climb 1000 stairs to reach the temple. However, the beauty of the place makes the tiring journey worthy.

4. Karanji Lake

If you are visiting Chamundi Hill, you ought to visit Karanji Lake. This lake is located on the foot of the hills. It is a man-made lake and one of the largest in the state. Mysore or Mysuru – City located in the foothills of Chamundi Hills in the state of Karnataka has stolen my heart. I have visited so many other cities but Mysore gave me all kinds of different vibes. It is one of the well-organized cities offering the best public transportation, amazing food, relaxed vibes, and culturally rich, making one feel at home. I visited Mysore in January and I am sharing Post with Top Places to visit in Mysore in 2 days, Places to Visit near Mysore, and Best restaurants and places to eat in Mysore.

Before coming here I only knew, Mysore being famous for Silk Sarees and Mysore Dosa but the city has more than that to offer to every kind of travelers. From the stunning architecture of Mysore Palace, silk weaving artists, local crafts to eating local delicacies; you will have everything to experience.

History of Mysore:

The name Mysore is an anglicized version of the word Mahishuru. According to Hindu mythology demon Mahishasur was residing in this region which was known as Mahishapura. Later he was killed by goddess Chamundeshwari whose temple is atop the Chamundeshwari hill. Later the name becomes Mahishuru and then Mysuru. The government of India changed it to Mysore in 2014.

The Kingdom of Mysore was ruled by the Wadiyar family from 1399 to 1950. The kingdom was expanded in south Karnataka and parts of Tamilnadu. For a brief period of time, Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali ruled the kingdom. After Tipu Sultan being killed by Britishers, they returned the Kingdom to Wadiyars and even today they retain the identity. The present King of Mysore is Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamraja Wadiyar.

Mysore Palace History:

There are dearths of Places to visit in Mysore, but One of the famous places to visit in Mysore is Mysore Palace and truly deserves every reason for fame. It is also known as Amba Vilas, the official residence of Wadiyar’s and the top tourist attractions in Mysore. The Indo- Saracenic style of architecture of this sprawling palace is a replacement of the old wooden building destroyed by the fire in the late 19th century during the Dussera festival. The present structure was commissioned by King Krishnarajendra Wadiyar IV with the help of British architecture Henry Irwin.

The palace houses two Darbar halls[royal court rooms], a number of courtyards, strikingly beautiful Gardens, temples, and official residence. The palace has three gates to get entry. The Palace is visited by millions of people every year and it claims to be the second most visited place after the Taj Mahal in Agra. I reached the Gates early at 10 AM to beat the crowd.

The Mysore Palace is strikingly beautiful inside and is most attractive place I have ever been to.The rich colors of walls,intricately carved pillars,colorful paintings, wooden carved doors and everything was straight out of dream like bollywood movie.This probably says the prosperity of king Wadiyar’s. From the tinted glasses on the roofs, colorful tiles on the floor and the abundance of Gold used took my attention and I was just hooked at it.

The most famous places to visit in Mysore Palace are – The Darbar Hall, The Amba Villas, The Royal seat, The Kalyan Mantapa, the Portrait gallery, and other many items on display. As you enter, first you will see grand Kalyan Mantapa also known as Marriage hall on the ground floor. The hall is Octagonal in shape decorated with beautiful tiles, amazing colors, and beautiful chandeliers that made me speechless. As you walk through ahead, you will come across many paintings depicting the Mysore Dussera festival , king and his kingdom, etc.

On the first floor, there are two Halls where King used to address the Public. The one which is shared on the internet many times also known as Durbar Halls or Reception Hall is a very massive hall colored with pink, yellow, and turquoise with intricately carved Pillars and gold-tinted roofs which makes you feel awe. It faces the garden area and the king used it to see their people, festivals, and celebrations from the balcony.

The other is known as Amba Vilas which was used as a private hall. It is far more beautiful than the Durbar hall.It is beautifully decorated with stained glasses, wooden roofs and used more amount of Gold in walls and Pillars and adorned with beautiful chandeliers. You can say it as one of the masterpieces of the Palace. It is really royal and regal room that shows the royalty of Wadiyar kings.

The Mysore palace is truly master piece and blend of Hindu, Muslim, European and all kind of architecture.

As you step out from the Mysore Palace, you will come across Old Mysore Palace originally built as a wooden structure that caught in a fire during the Dussehra festival. A portion of the palace still remains today. I would highly recommend this touristy attraction to visit in Mysore. Definitely, Mysore Palace is one of the Top Places to visit in Mysore in 2 days.

Mysore Palace Travel Tips:

Mysore Palace entry fee is INR 50 per person.There is a separate ticket to visit Old Palace. It is 200 INR for foreign Nationals.
Shoes are not allowed to wear inside the Palace, you can keep it outside in the shoe racks.
On the Sunday and holidays the Mysore Palace is lit up with 97000 bulbs at night from 7 PM to 8 PM which is certainly not to miss the sight.
Mysore Dussera is very famous festival when many people flock in the city to witness it.The Goddess Chamundeshwari is placed in Golden howdah and taken to Chamundeshwari temple atop the hill for further procession.During those days Palace and Mysore is lit up and festival is celebrated with great zeal.

You need at least 3-4 hours to completely visit it.
On weekends crowd would be more,if possible visit on weekdays.

Art Gallary-Jagmohan Palace:

As Mysore is known as City of Palaces; most of them now converted to hotels or as art galleries. The Jagmohan Palace is also converted to art Gallery.When original wooden Palace was caught in fire, royal family stayed at Jagmohan Palace when Amba Vilas aka Mysore Palace was under construction.The Gallery is rich with beautiful artifacts with one of the largest collection in south india. Most of the artifacts are Paintings and other exhibits are weapons of war, musical instruments, sculptures, brass ware, antique coins, and currencies.It is certainly not to miss places to visit in Mysore in your 2 days.

St. Philomena Church:

The St. Philomena’s church was originally built in 1840, during the reign of King Krishanaraja Wadiyar IV to cater to the need of European people in Mysore. But as the number of European people increased, it aroused the need of a bigger church and its construction completed in 1941 and since then it is functional. The remnants of St. Philomena’s are still preserved in this church.

The church was constructed in the Neo-Gothic style and is considered as second biggest Church in Asia. The main attraction of the church is its twin spires which can be spotted even from a mile away. The original brick mortar structure is renovated and replaced with cement and plaster building. The hall of the church has stained glass windows, displaying exquisitely drawn paintings from various stages of Christ’s life. You can visit the church every day from morning from 6 AM to 6 PM in the evening.

Chamundeshwari Temple & Chamundi Hills:

The Chamundeshwari Devi is known as the Protector of Mysore and revered goddess of the town. The chamundeshwari temple is located 13 Kms from Mysore main town and built on a hillock known as Chamundi Hills. The temple is considered as one of the Shaktipeetha among 18 Maha Shakti Peetha and hence you will see it always crowded. The goddess is known as fierce as she slayed demons Chanda, Munda and Mahishashura but the idol is pretty and calm. The temple is also equally beautiful in sight.

As you leave Mysore’s main town and drive uphill till the temple, the scenery will start change and it will become more greener as you reach atop. From the hill, you can have spectacular views of Mysore city. I must say, don’t miss this temple even though its outskirts of Mysore as it is one of the must-see and famous sightseeing Places to visit in Mysore in 2 days.

The temple timings are morning 7.30 AM to 2 PM and evening 3.30 PM to 9 PM.

Offer worship at Big Nandi Statue:

As you climb down the Chamundeshwari temple, you will come across the Big Nandi temple. It is considered to be more than 350 years old and the third-largest Nandi Statue in India. According to Hindu mythology Nandi is considered as the vehicle (mount) of Lord Shiva. In front of every Shiva temple, on the court facing the shrine, you can see the image of a Nandi. It is carved out of a single boulder. Don’t miss this place and offer worship here.

Government Silk Factory:

The trip to Mysore is incomplete without mentioning famous Mysore silk. Though I come from a textile city surat, I couldn’t resist myself from visiting the silk factory. If you want to know how Mysore Silk Sarees are made just from cocoon to fabric, you can witness the entire process here.

Nowadays, all the process is mostly automated in the looms with less human intervention, still, you can see step by step process of silk weaving of saree’s from thread making, dying, gold threads weaving and lastly packing. Even though this is not the famous place to visit in Mysore, but if you are a saree lover like me, give it a visit on your 2 days Mysore trip.

Note: Camera and Cellphone are not allowed inside the factory. One of the factory employees will show you around and will explain the entire process. There is a showroom in the complex to buy Silk sarees, dresses, etc. I would recommend buying the authentic stuff from here instead of anywhere else for original silk products.

Government Oil Sadalwood factory:

When I was staying at a homestay in Coorg, I came across fragrant small ‘Mysore Sandalwood’ soap with a green colored box that took my attention. As I was heading to Mysore, somehow I could manage to visit this place during my short stay. The factory is located near to Silk factory with a narrow road leading to it.

The sandalwood factory was initially set up by King Krishnaraja Wadiyar in Bangalore. During the 1st World war, excessive sandalwood oil couldn’t be exported to Europe, and to make good use of excessive sandalwood, the factory was set up. Today, Only oil extraction and distillation of oil from sandalwood are done at the Mysore factory whereas the Soap factory is in Bangalore.

As you enter the complex, you will be greeted with green sandalwood trees and the fragrance of sandalwood. At the entrance gate, you have to deposit all your bags, cameras, phones, and bags and the guide will show you around. As Guide explained, Mysore sandalwood soap is the only soap in the world with 100% Pure Sandalwood oil. OMG glad to know na??

As he took a group of us further through the stacks of sandalwood, he explained that first, we identify the wood is good for the extraction or not from the Lot. Then it goes for cutting, chopping, disintegrating wood, powdering, boiling, distilling the oil, filtering, and on. He explained that only the inner part of the wood is used and the rest is used for funeral and temple use. As a curious engineer in me, I was happy to know about the entire process that goes into making soap. Again, this factory is also not so popular sightseeing place of Mysore, but I would say visit it to know some technology behind the soap.

Note: As you exit, at the entrance road, you will come across a small souvenir shop in the factory. I would recommend buying soap, oil, talcum powder, incense sticks, etc from here. You can visit the factory from 9.30 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5.30 PM.

Colorful Devraja Market :

One of the top things to do in Mysore is a visit to 100 years old colorful Devraja Market. This market runs along Sayaji Rao Road and I entered South Gate from Dhanvantri Road. There are two gates to enter- North and South[from clock tower side].

As I entered the market, first came across fruit stalls, then household stalls, vegetables, and so many Banana stalls. I was amazed seeing so many different kinds of Bananas here and they were happy to sell it to me :-). In the end, I visited the Flower section which was my favorite part as I know South Indians adorns flowers most.

The visit to the market was vibrant and colorful yet some kind of chaotic with local flavor. If you are photography enthusiastic, must visit this place. The market remains open from 8 AM to 9 PM every day. I visited in the evening and it was not much crowded at that time. This market is not visited by tourists and hence it was one of my best places to visit in Mysore.

Stay in Heritage Hotel:

You can full fill your dream of being King for a few days by staying at one of those heritage Palaces now turned into hotels. One of them is Lalitha Mahal Palace .

Lalitha Mahal Palace is one of the elegant palaces located close to Chamundi Hill Road which is second largest palace in Mysore after Mysore Palace. The corridors and the hall have lovely paintings of Mysore rulers and historical events of Mysore Kingdom. The restaurant block is the alluring part with the curved roof and the glass dome at the center follow spectacular architectural interest of the Mysore rulers.

Visit as many Museums you want:

Mysore houses many fine art galleries and Museums, you can visit few important of them like:

Folk Lore Museum
Mysore Railway Museum
Sand and Sculpture Museum

Take Day trip to Srirangpatna and Brindavan Gardens:

Places to visit near mysore- srirangpatna

If you are in Mysore for more than a day, you must visit Places near to Mysore like Srirangpatana and Brindavan Gardens in Mandya. You can reach here via public transport too. Alternately, If you are traveling by car, then you can visit these places on the way to Mysore from Bangalore with a stop at Chhanapatna town.

Many Bollywood movies have been shot in Brindavan Gardens and are famous for its fountains. The highlight of the Park is a musical fountain show which takes place at night. So plan it accordingly. The Park is so huge and it may take 3-4 hours to see visit it. Don’t miss Srirangapatana if you are Planning Best Places to visit near Mysore.

Places to Visit around Mysore:

*If you have more than 3 days, you can visit several other prominent places around Mysore like Melkote, Shivasamudra Falls, Somnathpura Temples, Talakadu, Ranganathittu Bird sanctuary, etc.

Mysore has plenty of hotels from Luxury to budget and hostels for the backpacker’s budget. Lalitha Mahal and hotel Park Lane are famous among foreigners.If you want to stay in the center of the city, try to stay near the Mysore Palace area.

Places to Eat in Mysore :

Mysore trip is incomplete without testing typical Mysore Masala Dosa with filter coffee which you can get anywhere in the city and it tasted good at every place. I am a big fan of dosa and I devoured many different varieties of it like neer dosa, set dosa, etc in Mysore. Apart from it, Vinayak Mylari is a small shop, famous for its Mysore Dosa among locals and tourists. You can eat vegetable meals and Biryani at hotel RRR. If you are looking for western food with good music and ambiance head to hotel Park Lane .

When you are in Mysore, make sure to taste Mysore Pak at the famous Guru Sweet Mart near Devraja Market. The founders of this shop supposedly have served in the Palace kitchen and had come up with the dish when the king had asked to prepare a unique and special dish for him. So if you want to try Mysuru Pak from the place it was created then this is the Right Place.

Getting Around Mysore:

Mysore has very well organized transport with AC and NON AC city buses running throughout the city and in the outskirts too. You can purchase a day pass at INR 100 for a city bus and visit all the places you want in a day.All the attractions are accessible by city bus in Mysore. Another option is to travel by Auto and taxi. I also came across few-cycle stands in the city, which means you can hire it to get around Mysore city.

How to Reach Mysore:

The nearest airport to Mysore is Banglore. If you are planning a trip to Mysore from Bangalore, a good option is to take direct KSRTC VOLVO Bus to Mysore from the airport itself as you will not enter the Banglore city and can beat the major traffic jams. Also, KSRTC has a good network of Buses from Banglore and other parts of Karnataka to reach by road. Mysore is also well connected by train from major cities of India.

I had visited Mysore during Dasar, and it was the worst visit of my life. the city was so crowded and everything overpriced that I simply decided to leave in a day. But I really liked Srirangpatnam. It was a beautiful place.

I had visited Mysore once when I was quite small. I have faint memories of the place. But I really want to visit Mysore during the Dussehra and see the Mysore Palace all lighted up. I would also love to visit the soap factory. My grandma had a special liking for Mysore Sandal soaps and she would not like to use any other. It is good to know that Mysore sandal soaps use 100% pure sandalwood oil. I guess grandma knows the best!
