There are many reasons to keep your feet dry while outside, especially during colder months when the combination of frigid air and moisture is a nightmare. Some boots — such as many leather varieties — are water-resistant, so they can hold their own against splashes and drizzle but aren’t the best options to be wearing in a downpour. Other boots are fully waterproof thanks to materials like Gore-tex.

According to Devon Vanoostveen, the Global Marketing Manager at Merrell, whether you need something that’s waterproof or water-resistant, high on your calf or up to the ankle, or with stout traction or flat depends on how you plan to wear them. “I think it's about looking at end use and then prioritizing what features and benefits are important,” she says.

To determine the best men’s waterproof boots, we dispatched 21 different products to our Travel + Leisure team. We wore the boots in different scenarios for six months to test their comfort, quality, waterproof capability, and overall style. We chose our top picks based on the results, with an array of options to help you find the perfect pair for your next trip.

Best Overall

Carhartt 6in waterproof wedge work boot.

They feel great straight out of the box and are available in soft- or steel-toe.

After several months of wearing these boots multiple times per week, the inner lining of the boot at the heel is beginning to rub off.

Anyone who has worn leather boots knows that it takes a while to break them in. Somehow, Carhartt has managed to steer clear of leather’s biggest drawback with its 6-inch Wedge Work Boot. During our tests, these boots were comfortable right off the bat and stayed comfy for up to 10 hours as we wore them throughout the day and for many days after. Another difference between these leather boots and others on the market is that they’re coated with Carhartt’s Storm Defender waterproof breathable membrane, which kept our feet dry while trodding through rainy sidewalks and into big, deep puddles. They also had enough grip to keep us from sliding around and look good enough to wear anywhere, not simply on the job as Carhartts are usually for. That said, if you want to use these on the worksite or in the warehouse, opt for the steel-toe option.

The biggest drawback we found with these boots is that they require you to wear long socks to prevent rubbing on the calf. Still, they didn’t cause any abrasions or rashes when we wore them with short socks. They’re also wide and fit large, so consider sizing down as much as a full size. We also found that after six months of use, the material on one heel began to wear down and made it annoying to slide our feet out. While we were disappointed to see this kind of wear, we would still recommend these based on their comfort and support, although we'll try to get them on sale so durability issues aren't quite as financially painful. We should note that while Carhartt doesn't offer a specific warranty period, they do have a "Built to Last Commitment" that promises buyers the company will repair, replace, or credit for damage that does not meet expectations.

Dr. Martens Wintergrip Waterproof Boots

Dick's Sporting Goods

These have a timeless look, even if you’re not at a punk show.

Like most Dr. Martens, these take a long time to break in and after several months of use, the tread has worn down slightly.

Gone are the days when Docs were simply for punks, goths, and emos. Nowadays, Dr. Martens have become some of the most tried and trusted boots on the market, and they exude coolness. The thing with Docs is that contrary to the Carhartts listed above, they’re extremely stiff and take a long time to break in. We wore them for three hours at first, then for several days afterward (including eight hours in the rain), and they still weren’t fully broken in. That said, they did get more comfortable over time and we expect that to continue as we wear them for months to come. And we will absolutely wear them. Not just because they look cool, but because they’re made of excellent materials that will hold up in any urban weather, including winters in New York City. If you do plan to wear these in the winter, know that the inner lining is very warm and cozy, and they’re as waterproof as advertised. After six months of use, we found them to be much more comfortable and are happy to see that they have held up great through frequent use in rain, snow, and slush.

Best for Hiking

Danner mountain 600 leaf hiking boot.

They're very light but still offer great support for long hikes.

If you want more ankle support, Danner also sells the Recurve hunting boot (see below).

Hiking boots these days are anything but simple, with flashy colors and all the fabrics and layers you can imagine. So it’s delightful that Danner keeps its boots classic while adding all the necessary technology. We found these boots to be unbelievably light and comfortable, as well as waterproof thanks to the Gore-tex coating. They fit true to size and provided ample arch and ankle support for a day out on the trail. Throughout six months of testing, we even noticed that they became more and more comfortable with every wear. We also loved the grip and that they come with an extra set of laces.

But what really stands out about these boots is Danner’s commitment to sustainability with its recrafting program, which allows you to send in your old boots and have them fixed up using the same equipment that made them. That means one less thing in the landfill and more years of comfort for your feet. Aside from a few minor scuffs and scratches, these boots are still in really great shape after six months. The insoles have broken in nicely and the upper tongue softened a bit — making them even more comfortable and form-fitting.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 15 | Leather, Gore-tex, Vibram Outsole with Megagrip | 2.3 pounds

Best Slip-on

Blundstone thermal chelsea boot.

You can wear them through multiple seasons — just remove the sheepskin footbed in warmer weather.

They don’t lace up, so wear them hiking at your own peril.

Go somewhere with rough, rainy winters like Toronto, Seattle, or London and just count the Blundstones. We guarantee you’ll lose count because these Chelsea boots are so tried, tested, and true. Made with premium materials, Blundstones will last you years. During our tests, we had no trouble maintaining traction on snow and ice and keeping out water. In fact, we sprayed a hose on them for several minutes and not a single drop got inside, not even through the elastic.

They’re a bit heavy, but that’s because they’re meant to handle winters , and they don’t tighten up, so we wouldn’t personally wear them hiking, but there are many who do. A neat feature is that the cozy sheepskin footbed is removable, so you can easily slide in regular insoles in warmer weather to be able to wear them through different seasons. These boots held up perfectly throughout our six-month testing period, including a very damp winter. They haven't scuffed or received any water damage, and they remain easy to clean.

The Details: Sizes 4 to 13 | Waterproof leather, Thinsulate insulation, removable sheepskin footbed, TPU outsole

Best Lightweight

The north face larimer mid waterproof boots.

They’re so light and comfortable.

They run small, so order a size up.

If you don’t want a waterproof boot that looks like a waterproof boot, check out the Larimers from The North Face. Stylish and casual like a skate shoe, they’re fully waterproof thanks to North Face’s Waterproof DryVent membrane. Insulation inside will keep your feet warm, and there’s solid ankle and arch support . We felt comfortable in these boots from day one, but ordered a size up as recommended, and that worked out perfectly. They were noticeably lightweight, which is a good alternative to some of the heavier options we tried. After six months of wearing, they are still in great condition and seem to be well-built for long-term use.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 14 | Waterproof suede and ballistic nylon upper, insulated inner, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | 1.9 pounds

Most Comfortable

Timberland white ledge mid waterproof hiking boot.

These boots instantly became our primary daily footwear.

It takes a few days to work them in.

From almost the first moment wearing these boots, we found them to be some of the most comfortable footwear we’ve worn, and they immediately became our go-to, not just on rainy days. The reason is because they’re so comfortable and supportive. They’re sturdy without being cumbersome, and the grip was unnoticeable, which is the best compliment possible as we had no slips on asphalt/concrete, grass, sand, or mud. And the price point is affordable, too.

We should report that we got a blister on our road toe on the second day of wearing these, but we were quite comfortable afterward, so they just require a short break-in period. After that, these shoes became more comfortable with each wear. Some people may not love the presence of the big Timberland logo, but that’s a personal preference.

We did find that after six months of testing, the toe piece started to peel away slightly from the upper, allowing water inside if we stepped in a puddle or shallow creek. The durability is impressive otherwise, but this flaw was impossible for us to ignore. We still recommend these for comfort, but buyers should be cautious when putting them through strenuous or water-related endeavors.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 15 | Waterproof leather, EVA midsole, rubber lug outsole

Best Chelsea Boot

Wolverine waterproof insulated chelsea boot.

They’re perfect for camping, yard work, or trudging around on a rainy day.

These are best worn with heavy socks.

For stomping around in messy weather and rough terrain, check out these Wolverines. When we trudged through a creek, wet grass, and mud, we didn’t feel any water inside of the boot — even when we dipped our foot directly into the creek. We found them comfortable and they showed no abnormal signs of wear during our six-month test. They also have great traction that felt stabilizing even in ice storms.

Some may be concerned with the weight, with each boot weighing in at 1.6 pounds, and you may want to wear heavy socks to prevent rubbing. But if you’re looking for something heavy-duty to keep the water out at a solid price, take a look at these.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 14 | Waterproof leather upper, DuraWarm insulation, EVA midsole, rubber lug outsole, nylon shank | 3.2 pounds

Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Hiking Boots

The price is unbeatable, especially when it’s on sale.

It might not be as durable as other boots.

We can’t say enough good things about these Columbia boots. They’re lightweight, waterproof, comfortable, and have excellent traction — all for less than half the price of many of its competitors. We wore them on a week-long camping trip, and they did the job of keeping our toes dry, even on small creek crossings, slippery rocks, and through a cave hike . The fit was true to size, and they were ready to go out of the box without much breaking in. After six months of tests, they are still in great condition, and we actually prefer the rugged look caused by the normal wear and tear. The size range is also extensive, going up to size 17.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 17 | PU coated leather, suede, and mesh upper, Omni-tech waterproof membrane, Techlite midsole, Omni-grip rubber outsole | 1.9 pounds

Travel + Leisure / Greg Dupree

Most Durable

Nike acg air zoom gaiadome gore-tex.

Plenty breathable, these experience minimal wear and tear during hiking and city walking.

The clunkier style can take some time to get used to.

These handsome boots from Nike would fit in as well on the runway as they would on the mountain. A tall synthetic upper, Gore-Tex waterproofing and serious traction on the bottom make these boots very athletic — we could even run in them. These boots were more breathable than any we reviewed and showed minimal signs of wear and tear after six months of testing — our white model has a few scuffs and scratches, but we expected some of that after hiking and walking around the city. They also held up incredibly well in the rain, except when a puddle got onto the tongue, but that’s probably beyond normal use. Unfortunately, they tend to sell out quickly, so if you like them, act fast.

The Details: Sizes 3.5 to 15 | Synthetic upper, Gore-Tex, rubber outsole

Most Supportive

Danner men's recurve boot.

These are surprisingly lightweight for the support.

These boots are heavy and, during testing, we noticed some fatigue when wearing for long periods of time.

Danner’s dedicated hunting boot goes up higher above the ankle, offering outstanding support for rough terrain. Despite the height, we loved how lightweight these boots were and that they were easy to slide into. We wore them at a farm and while doing yard work and found them to be completely waterproof. The Vibram sole had great traction, too. Break-in time was minimal, and they stayed comfortable throughout the entire day. These boots are quite pricey, so unless you really want the extra support, they might not be worth it. They also aren’t very breathable, but few waterproof boots are. Aside from a few minor scuffs and scrapes on the leather, these boots are still in great shape after six months.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 14 | Full-grain leather and suede upper, Vibram midsole and outsole | 2.8 pounds

Best Chukka Boot

Clarks morris peak waterproof chukka boot.

These have a classic look and can be worn with dressier outfits.

They don’t look good with shorts.

If you like the classic look of a Chukka boot and still want some waterproofing, this pair’s for you. We found the Clarks Morris Peaks to be just as promised. The tumbled leather upper kept out all the water we threw at it, and they were quite comfortable after we broke in the initially stiff leather. The arch support seemed better than other Chukka boots we tried, and we liked the look, though not with shorts on. We did find them a bit on the heavy side, but it’s hard to complain for the affordable price. After six months of use, these boots are still in great condition and show no signs of fraying or breaking down.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 13 | Leather upper, thermoplastic rubber sole

Travel + Leisure / Levi Dolieslager

Best Traction

On cloudtrax waterproof boots.

These keep you from slipping on muddy or wet trails.

The dual density midsole takes some time to get used to.

On has really been making a name for itself as of late, and we can see why. The Swiss brand’s Cloudtrax Waterproof are excellent hiking boots, with significant traction to have you speeding up and down the trail, even if it’s muddy or slippery. Initially, we found the boots stiff and tough to get on, but that quickly changed, and we never had pain wearing them. The shoe didn’t feel flimsy and appeared made of excellent quality materials — some of which are recycled which adds some sustainability points. We also found them completely waterproof and the price to be fair. The one thing we didn’t love about this boot is the curved heel that makes these slightly awkward to walk in, but other than that, these are a great, travel-ready option. After six months of testing, these boots have held up well and show no signs of wear and tear.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 14 | Recycled polyester, EVA, rubber | 1.94 pounds

Best Work Boot

Ariat kingham waterproof boot.

These shoes are very durable, comfortable, and waterproof with a classic Chukka style.

Their rigidity takes some getting used to.

If you want a sturdy boot for staying on your feet for long hours but don’t need steel-toe protection, check out the Ariat Kingham. Made in a Chukka style, these boots fit similar to cowboy boots with a large heel and a rigid sole. They also have an enforced non-steel toe-box, which takes a little getting used to as it doesn’t allow for toe movement. Despite these particularities, it didn’t take long to get used to them, and we felt comfortable wearing them for hours on end, although we wouldn't recommend these to city-dwellers — six months of testing later, we consistently found them clunky to walk in and don't think they would be great for navigating bustling streets. They're great outdoor boots otherwise.

These provided excellent traction on rocky and slippery terrain and had no trouble staying dry (so long as no water gets in from the top). We even stood in a puddle and our socks stayed dry. One thing we didn’t love was how the sole sticks out from the back of the boot, but we still see these as a good option for those who want a comfortable, country-style boot.

The Details: Sizes 7 to 13 | Leather upper, rubber sole

Other Waterproof Boots We Liked

We tested so many boots this time around that we had a lot of great options to choose from. These ones performed well, with some small grievances that kept them from our main list.

Huckberry All-Weather Duckboot : The rubber duckboot style of these boots all but guarantees no water will get in, but we found them heavy and had some questions about their durability.

Sorel Men’s Carson Chukka Waterproof Boots : We loved the look, feel, and weight of these boots after working them in, but like the rigid leather, the competition was too stiff to put them above other Chukka-style boots we tried.

We dispatched 21 of the best waterproof boots on the market to our team members around the U.S. and put the products through a series of tests. First, we examined the boots for defects and assessed the weight before putting them on for an hour in our homes. After determining their initial comfort and breaking them in a bit, we wore the boots several times over the course of two weeks through both rainy and dry weather. We stood in puddles, crossed creeks, and trekked over rough terrain to test the waterproofing and traction of the boots. To really check if they’re waterproof, we stuffed the boots with dry paper towels and poured water on the outside to see if everything stayed dry on the inside. Our testing will continue for six more months to make sure our picks are built to last.

Tips for Buying Waterproof Boots

Think about your travel plans.

There are lots of different styles of waterproof boots made with different materials, so it’s important to decide what you really need them for. If you plan on hiking, you’re going to need boots with heavy traction, while you can get away with something lighter for a city getaway. You should also think about the temperature at your destination.“

A mom playing out in the snow, she's really going to want something that's insulated and super warm and cozy, is comfortable and [has good] traction,” says Vanoostveen. “Running errands, I might prioritize something that's a little more style-forward and maybe doesn't have insulation but has good traction.”

Look for versatile styles

Versatility is the name of the game when you’re traveling since you don’t always have the option of packing three or four pairs of boots. So look for something that is comfortable for walking around , looks stylish, and that can handle some messier terrain. A bonus for versatility is that you can wear them at home, too, and get even more use out of them.

Consider packability

While you might like the look of a tall, chunky boot, they probably aren’t the best ones for stuffing into your luggage. Some boots are much heavier than others, too, although that may not be an issue if you’re driving somewhere. So keep your luggage space in mind before choosing which boot to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waterproofing is done through the deployment of materials like Gore-tex, which causes water to turn into droplets and simply slide off the boot. Water resistance can keep out some water, but it will eventually soak through and can take a while to dry. According to Vanoostveen, water-resistant boots might be enough for many people as they’re more breathable and still keep some water out.

You should check the instructions for each brand, but generally, it’s okay to clean off dirt and mud with a damp, soft brush or cloth. If that doesn’t work, you can scrub lightly with a solution of half water and half vinegar or a leather cleaning solution.

After you clean your boots, pour a little bit of water on them. If water gets absorbed into the material, you should add more waterproof coating. Some of these are water-based, but they also come in gels or creams. Water-based solutions will do a better job at maintaining the boots’ breathability.

Yes, but they may not be insulated enough to keep your feet warm. If looking for winter boots , look for boots with Thinsulate or other insulated lining, and make sure there’s enough traction. You’ll also want boots that are tall enough to keep out the snow depending on how much snow you expect to be walking through.

The best rain boots have a sturdy rubber sole and some kind of waterproof—or at least, water-resistant—upper. We’ve included a few lace-up options here, too, but largely they should have as few seams as possible. This is not the time to bring out your Cuban heels or even your well-worn hiking boots . You’re looking for a barrier between your feet and the elements. Luckily, there are a whole bunch of rain boots in the market that’ll ward off any water—and we’ve gathered the best of the best below.

Best Statement-Making Rain Boots

Prada monolith duck boots.

mens travel rain boots

Every time Miuccia Prada deploys her signature nylon in a new and thoughtful way, we can’t help but tip our hats to her. Here, we’ve got it encasing the upper of these aptly named Monolith boots with a neoprene (another Prada regular) inset to keep things comfortable and waterproof. Are the hulking soles actually carved from stone as they appear? Based on their light weight, no. But they definitely provide a solid foundation.

Materials: Neoprene, nylon, and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Classic Rain Boots

Hunter original waterproof rain boot.

Hunter’s OG Wellington boots—aka “Wellies”—are about as iconic as it gets. They hold two Royal Warrants of Appointment from the British royal family, garnering greater renown for their protection from the elements throughout the decades. Whether you’re walking through mud at Glastonbury or tending to your garden back home, it just makes sense to have a pair (or two) waiting by the door.

Material: Vulcanised rubber with polyester lining.  Fit: Regular.  Height: Mid-calf. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Hybrid Rain Boots

Sorel metro ii waterproof chukka.

Materials: Waterproof leather suede and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Minimalist Rain Boots

Stutterheim chelsea winterwalker boot.

Stutterheim knows waterproof. If you see a minimalist rubberized cotton raincoat shedding water and oozing Swedishness, it’s probably from Stutterheim. The brand brings the same ethos of designing for “troubled water and dark skies” to its rubber Chelsea boots, which features thermo-fleece lining that will mold to your foot shape over time.

Materials: Rubber with thermo-fleece lining. Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Thick-Sole Rain Boots

Off-white logo sponge rubber boot.

A solid base is a key attribute of a good rain boot. Off-White delivers a foundation and then some with these rubber boots that sit atop a beefy sole. You’ll also get some street cred with the brand’s signature zip tie hangin’ out in the back.

Materials: Rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Tactical Rain Boots

Palladium pampa travel lite waterproof boot.

Palladium started out manufacturing airplane tires in the 1920s, which means it can handle some slush and drizzle just fine. A lug sole, black-and-orange colorway, and toggle cord laces give these boots a tactical vibe. They can definitely withstand a good beating.

Materials: Recycled polyester and EVA rubber.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best High-Fashion Rain Boots

Bottega veneta puddle boot.

These Bottega Puddle boots made a big splash (sorry) when they debuted during Milan Fashion Week, ushering in an era of hulking stompers that we’re still wading through (again, sorry)—and with good reason! They are waterproof, feature a cool, curvy silhouette, and come in a bunch of excellent colors.

Materials: Rubber with cotton lining.  Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Handcrafted Rain Boots

Diemme balbi suede rubber boot.

Taking a cue from duck styles, Diemme ups the ante and brings its performance-meets-craftsmanship approach to these Chelsea boots; each pair is handmade in the brand’s Italian workshop. Sure, there’s some damn rich suede up top, but they’re not getting anywhere near the ground, because of its lengthy and heavy-duty rubber soles. Rest assured, these guys are built to perform.

Materials: Rubber and suede.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Sole only.

Best Mud-Ready Rain Boots

Barbour bede rain boots.

Barbour’s footwear may not have ascended to the same seminal status as its waxed jacket, but the brand born in the British countryside knows how to keep things dry—feet included. Its Bede boots will get you through all kinds of muck and will make you look smart in the process.

Best Luxury Rain Boots

The row greta textured leather chelsea rain boots.

Sometimes the best kind of luxury is the one only you (and some eagle-eyed jawns enthusiasts) really know about. Take the Row’s Greta boots, for instance. They may look like a sturdy utilitarian pair, which they are, but they’re also constructed from impossibly supple textured leather set on top of a beefy Vibram sole. And the proportions are perfect. It imbues both fashion cred and function.

Materials: Leather and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Sole only.

Best Cult-Status Rain Boots

Suicoke alal rain boots.

The duck boot is ripe for riffing, and it makes sense cult Japanese brand Suicoke would step up to the plate: EVA rubber soles and technical materials are part of its ethos. This tonal black pair combines rubberized leather uppers with high-coverage lightweight soles capable of keeping you super dry and super fly through the rain.

Materials: Rubber and rubberized leather. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Duck Boots

L.l. bean 8” bean boot.

If your vibe skews to this side of the pond, then the classic duck boot may be your answer to Wellies. Possibly Maine’s most famous export next to lobster rolls, L.L. Bean’s Bean boots have a reputation for keeping water and cold out with a thick rubber boot bottom and a steel shank for comfort and support. They come in all kinds of iterations—lined, unlined, short, and tall—but we’re digging this chamois-lined version for chilly temps.

Materials: Rubber and leather.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Heavy-Duty Rain Boots

Nike acg zoom gaiadome gore-tex boot.

If your eyes widen at words like “heavy-duty” and “Gore-Tex”, these are your rain boots. Built with waterproof fabric and hefty lug soles, Nike’s ACG Zoom Gaiadome boots (even the name is tough as hell) are begging you to climb up a damp mountainside or at least complete your trekking fit. They’ve got all that Zoom Air cushioning for a soft landing, too.

Materials: Gore-Tex-coated canvas and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Everyday Rain Boots

Blundstone #2058 all-terrain chelsea boot.

There’s a reason you’ll see almost every Brooklynite of a certain age shod in Blundstone—even when it’s bone-dry outside. They’re supremely functional, comfortable, and look best when you’ve put some miles on them. Also, the Vibram outsole and water-resistant leather upper will guarantee that you’ll make it across muddy roads and sidewalks without fuss.

Materials: Rubber and water-resistant leather. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Water-resistant.

Most Unique Rain Boots

Moncler aqua rain boot.

Moncler’s Aqua Rain Boots will not be categorized. The brand somehow created a hybrid sneaker, boot, and galosh with a few mountain bike chromosomes thrown in. Undulating foam uppers and waffly recycled rubber soles, along with a cozy lining, all add up to foot coverings that repel water.

Best budget rain boots for cold conditions:  Kamik Forester ($70)

Best rain boots for deep snow & extreme cold:  Muck Boot Arctic Sport ($180)

We’ve taken advantage of sloppy winter and spring storms to test out our top picks as well as new promising contenders:

  • After putting them through their paces, the Bogs Classic High come out on top for their exceptional warmth, comfort, and durability.
  • At a more affordable price point, the Kamik Forester get the job done in wet weather and stand up to big storms.
  • For extreme conditions, we like the Muck Boot Arctic Sport for their warmth and comfort.

  • Bogs Classic High

Best rain boots overall

Price: $135

Weight (Pair): 5 lb. 3 oz.

Also Available In: Classic Ultra High (with handles)

Sizing: True to size

  • Good height for splash/muck protection
  • Comfortable
  • Easy to clean
  • Loose-fitting (clunky for long walks)

Bogs Classic High Boots slip on and off easily and are awesome for tromping through deep puddles, mud, or snow. They feel incredibly cushy and comfortable on your feet. And since they’re insulated with neoprene, they’re quite warm when you’re on the move. These boots are among the heaviest we tested, so they aren’t the best option for long walks. That said, they’re less clunky than we thought they might be, and they’re our go-to’s for a range of activities. Considering how durable the Classic Highs are, they’re an excellent value and you’ll surely get a lot of use out of them.

  • XTRATUF Ankle Deck Boots

Best short rain boots

Price: $105

Weight (Pair): 3 lb. 2.6 oz.

Also Available In: Legacy (taller, more supportive)

Sizing: If you’re on the edge, we recommend going up ½ size

  • Lightweight
  • Antimicrobial lining
  • Minimal traction
  • Short height limits weather-proofing
  • No arch support

The XTRATUF Ankle Deck Boots are simple, tough, and practical for wet, mucky conditions. Designed for those who live and work around the water, the Deck Boots provide excellent protection but are still short enough to allow for mobility. The ankle height also makes them comfortable for activities like boating, fishing, gardening, and outdoor chores in warm temperatures. When you want complete shielding from the elements, it’s easy to pair the Deck Boots with thick socks and rain pants. The original XTRATUF boot, now called the Legacy , is known as the “State Boot of Alaska” since it outfits the majority of sport and commercial fishermen throughout the state.

  • Sperry Cold Bay Chukka

Stylish insulated duck boots for around town

Price: $120

Weight (Pair): 2 lb. 13.9 oz.

Also Available In: Cold Bay Duck Boot (high top)

  • Less suited for hiking due to heel
  • short height limits weather-proofing
  • Need leather treatment preiodically

Sperry’s Cold Bay Chukkas offer an excellent balance of style and functionality for cold, wet conditions. The all-rubber lowers make them bomb-proof in the muck but they still look sleek and fashionable – reminiscent of classic hunting boots. The Cold Bays are well-insulated but can still be comfortably worn indoors. The fleece lining makes them feel extra soft as well. Generally, the Cold Bays are quite versatile, but they do have a small heel so they’re better for leisurely activities and everyday wear around town rather than for hitting the trail.

  • Kamik Forester

Best budget boots for cold conditions

Weight (Pair): 4 lb. 9.6 oz.

  • Cinch collar

Kamik’s Forester Boots are one of the most affordable options for those who need a rain boot that performs well in mud, rain, and snow. The cinch collar acts as a built-in gaiter to keep snow out of the cuff when walking through deep drifts. The Hunters slip on and off easily as well, making them a convenient choice for those who go in and out of the house frequently. We found the Hunters to be a bit on the heavy/bulky side, and the quality isn’t quite as high as some, like the Bogs Classic High . If you’re on a tight budget though, the Hunters are a solid choice for working outside in cold conditions.

Muck Boot Arctic Sport Tall

Best rain boot for deep snow & extreme cold

Price: $180

Weight (Pair): 5 lb.

Also Available In: Sport Mid, Tall Steel Toe

  • Loose-fiting (clunky for long walks)
  • Too warm for normal conditions

Muck Boot’s Arctic Sports are some of the best rain boots on the market for extremely cold conditions. As the name suggests, these boots are designed for muddy and wet situations when the temperature is below freezing. The Arctic Sports are a lot like the Bogs Classic High , with a comfortable stretch-neoprene bootie that hugs the calf and foot to trap heat in and keep the elements out. However, they’re less flexible and significantly warmer due to a foam underlay in the midsole, fleece lining, and a thicker rubber base. So they may be too hot and heavy for intense activity in mild conditions. Overall, the Arctic Sports are exceptionally well-made and they’re a great option for those needing a serious boot for serious weather.

What’s Most Important to You in a Rain Boot?

If you’ll only use your rain boots occasionally, you may not want to pay top-dollar for premium quality, (though you might be surprised how often they come in handy). A pair of decent affordable rain boots will get you started.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

What will you primarily be using your boots for? Walking the dog? Outdoor chores? Everyday wear around town? Having clarity on their use first will help determine how warm your boots should be and how much coverage they should have.

Best rain boots for outdoor work

Best rain boots for around town

Taller boots are best for outdoor chores and any activities that involve deep mud, walking through brush, or the potential to get really wet. Lower-cut ankle boots allow greater movement and are generally more comfortable to relax or walk significant distances in.

Best tall rain boots

Best ankle-height rain boots

Heavy-duty rain boots can weigh several pounds due to all the rubber, which can make them feel a bit clunky on your feet. Sometimes the level of security that substantial boots provide make the heavier weight worth it if you’ll be using them for high-intensity activities. But for lengthy walks or casual use, we prefer lighter footwear that takes less of a toll on your body and is generally more comfortable.

Best heavy-duty rain boots

Best lightweight rain boots

INSULATION & FIT

Most of the rain boots on our list have some insulation, but uninsulated boots can still be useful when the temperature dips. Rain boots without a lot of insulation are versatile because they can be worn in multiple seasons. Wear  lamb’s wool insoles . Just remember to order a size that’s large enough to accommodate thick socks or insoles without restricting your circulation. Boots that are too tight will make your feet cold by inhibiting blood flow.

Critical Footwear Considerations

Breathability is often limited in rain boots since they’re typically made of rubber, so it’s extra important to wear quality socks that wick moisture. Wicking socks keep your feet relatively dry and comfortable by moving sweat away from the skin. If your boots are warm or the weather is mild, a  thin merino wool liner sock  might be your best bet. To supplement your rain boots when it’s cold, wear  thick cushioned wool socks  to add warmth. To learn more about what goes into a quality sock, check out our  Best Hiking Socks List .

Feet can swell during long days on trail, so it’s a good idea to buy hiking footwear at least a half size larger than your normal shoes if you’re on the edge of a size. A good way to test sizing on your hiking shoes is to loosen all the laces, situate your foot so that your toes touch the front of the toe box, and then make sure you can put your index finger between your heel and the back of the shoe. This will ensure that your toes don’t slide forward and hit the toe box on downhill sections of trail. You should also consider which  socks  you’ll be wearing and if you’ll be adding  aftermarket insoles  when choosing a size. It’s much better for footwear to be a little big than too small.

Honorable Rain Boot Mentions

The following rain boots didn’t make our final list, but they’re very popular and they’ve still got a lot of good things going for them. You never know, one of these boots might be your perfect fit:

The Best Rain Boots for Women and Men

Eve O'Neill

By Eve O'Neill

Unlined, unpretentious, and fully waterproof—few pieces of footwear reward joyful, mud-stomping impulses as much as a pair of great rain boots.

Over the past five years we’ve tested 31 styles and researched hundreds of rain boots. Whether you’re walking city sidewalks, wading through runoff, or just trying to stay upright on slippery subway tile, we have 7 recommendations—led by our top pick, the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot (in women’s and men’s sizes)—for standout designs that have withstood years of testing and abuse from the Wirecutter team.

The research

Who should get rain boots, our pick: xtratuf ankle deck boot, also-great duck boots: l.l.bean bean boots, also-great chelsea boot: merry people bobbi ankle rain boot, also-great calf-height boot: hunter original short rain boots, other good rain boots, how we picked and tested, the environmental impact of rain boots, the competition, what to look forward to.

A pair of fully waterproof shoes can be liberating. They let you move through the world unhindered, without any consideration for the mess around your feet.

Although they’re particularly useful if you live where wet weather is common, rain boots are practical for all types of places. They remain effective long after the drops stop falling, especially when you have mud in place of dirt, slush instead of snow, or slick subway platforms.

Rain boots are also great for doing chores outside the house, like taking out the trash or walking the dog, because they’re so easy to slide on at the door, then kick off on your way back in.

Rain boots are generally branded as either men’s or women’s, and we’ve kept this naming scheme to make it easier for people to find styles that match what they want to wear. But in the world of rainwear there’s little difference between boots labeled as “women’s” or “men’s,” so as long as the boot fits, any boot will work for anyone.

A pair of Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boots, our pick for the best rain boot, shown in grey with yellow pull loops at the ankles.

Xtratuf Men’s 6-Inch Ankle Deck Boot

The best overall rain boot.

With the most slip-resistant outsole of any boot we tested, these work best in a wet, watery mess. They’re also among the most comfortable for walking.

Buying Options

Xtratuf Women’s 6-Inch Ankle Deck Boot

20% off sitewide w/code WIRECUTTER20

Who this is for: People who want one pair of highly versatile outdoor shoes that are easy to slip on and off. These boots function foremost as rain boots, but they also make for a comfortable pair of three-season outdoor shoes that can manage outdoor walks, grip slippery metal like grates and train tracks, and remain easy to drive in.

Why it’s great: The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot (in men’s and women’s sizes) is designed to keep its wearer upright on a wet fishing boat, but despite its utilitarian origins, it looks good enough for city wear. This boot has a versatile and comfortable shape as functional as the workwear it’s descended from, and it’s styled sort of like a Chuck Taylor.

Rubber doesn’t conform to a foot like leather does, so ankle-high, wide-mouthed, and round-toed are among the most functional styles of rain boots. They’re easier to walk and drive in because they don’t restrict calf movement. The wider foot opening makes the boot easy to slip on and off, and that’s what rain boots are all about: a quick transition between indoor and outdoor worlds. This design even has a kick tab—a tiny nub of rubber at the back of the shoe that lets you, yep, kick off your shoes when you come inside. Finally, the rounded toe is important; it’s the reason why these Xtratufs are more comfortable to walk in for extended periods than other boots. A narrow, tapered, inflexible toe box rubs against your toes.

In our traction tests, Xtratuf boots always outperform other models—and they should, as the flat-footed, soft rubber sole is built to cling to waterlogged boat decks. The tread on these boots is shallower than the tread on the Xtratuf Legacy boots, a former pick. That’s an advantage for anyone not using them to fish crab out of the northern Pacific, because tiny gravel and rocks won’t get stuck in the Ankle Deck Boot's tread (a small issue we found with the Legacy model).

The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is our recommendation for wet-weather bike commuting, too. In our tests these boots clung to slippery platform pedals better than anything we tried, though they allowed some unwanted movement since rain boots don’t hug the foot very well. (The perfect combination of flexible, waterproof, and not-horrible-looking bike footwear remains elusive.)

Side profile view of the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot, shown in grey.

After more than four years of use, Xtratuf’s Ankle Deck has proven itself the absolute best rain boot out there. Everybody comments on them, everyone wonders where I got them, I’ve even had a woman get off her bike in the middle of spin class and point to them, tossed in a pile with my workout bag, and ask where I got them.

They’ve replaced a number of other shoes I own, including almost every bad-weather shoe that had laces. I use them in spring for mud, summer for wet, and fall and early winter for snow, switching only to my winter boots when the snow starts piling up.

The slip-on, slip-off feature has been this boot’s biggest asset. This is my go-to choice for almost every single chore, walk, or errand I do.

Although the Ankle Deck Boot comes in men’s and women’s sizes, the fit and shape are similar. I typically wear a women’s size 9, but I own a men’s size 8 in the navy/red color of this shoe and have no problems with fit.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: One of the few downsides of the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is that the styling is very casual. We do have a unisex pick, the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot , that looks less like a tennis shoe and more like a plain boot. (Its grip isn’t as sticky, though, as that of the Xtratuf.)

Two pairs of the L.L.Bean Bean Boots, our pick for best duck boots for people who want a boot that does well in the mud.

L.L.Bean Men’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

For mixed terrain.

A duck boot laces tighter to your foot than a rubber boot, so it’s not as easy to slip on and off. However, it performs in both wet and muddy conditions.

mens travel rain boots

L.L.Bean Women’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

Who this is for: People who are less concerned about slipping a shoe on and off quickly, but more interested in a shoe that can take abuse in a variety of wet and muddy conditions. These are also the de facto “stylish boot” for men .

Why it’s great: Duck boots are a style of outdoor footwear pioneered by L.L.Bean . They feature the rubber soles and lower half of a rain boot along with a leather upper that laces tight like on a traditional boot. Our favorite duck boot is the 8-inch unlined Bean Boot for men and women . L.L.Bean is quick to point out that its design is the original duck boot , but that’s not why it’s our pick. If you want a shoe styled like a duck boot, you can find dozens of options. If you want a boot that’s one of the most thoughtfully designed pieces of gear for being outdoors, this is the boot to choose.

Outdoor professionals often say that you should never carry anything with you that can’t perform at least two different tasks (ideally three). This shoe handles three things well: comfortable walking, dealing with mud, and tolerating wet weather. Our other picks can handle all that stuff in varying degrees but typically have a single condition they perform best in. This shoe was designed to handle all three of those problems equally and simultaneously.

The laced leather around the calf is responsible for a lot of that functionality. The leather lets your ankle move freely for walking (and driving), while the laces hug it close to your leg so you can pull your foot out of sucking mud without leaving your boot behind.

The L.L.Bean Bean Boot, photographed from the side.

The bottom of the boot is cross-functional, too. It has a thicker heel than on most other boot types, so it will take longer to wear through, and the shallow, rounded tread is built for releasing debris; you can easily rinse it off, as well. And in the base of the shoe, these boots have a steel shank, a piece of metal in the sole that runs from the ball to the heel of the foot. This is a feature sometimes found in work boots, and it protects the foot from below and keeps the shoe from wearing out quickly.

The rubberized base of the boot shaft gives extra inches of waterproofing for walking through deep, curbside puddles, and the leather tongue is gusseted—attached on the inside of the boot on both sides—so the shoe remains waterproof for the entire height of the boot.

A close-up of the tongue and lace holes on the L.L.Bean Bean Boot.

Style-wise, it’s difficult to design a duck boot that laces flat, but this one does okay. Something about how the separate rubber and leather pieces are sewn together often creates funny leather protrusions around the eyelets and causes the tongue to bunch up. Every other duck boot we looked at failed to master the flat lacing. Even when the problem was small, as on the Eddie Bauer Hunt Pac , once we saw it we couldn’t unsee it.

It’s hard to overstate the popularity of these shoes. The biggest publications in the world have pondered that exact phenomenon, and Popular Mechanics neatly sums it up in the title of its article, “ The Never-Ending Greatness of L.L. Bean’s Boots .” The Atlantic does the same, explaining “ Why L.L. Bean’s Boots Keep Selling Out .” Current fashion trends aside, anyone who owns a pair will likely tell you it’s because the boots last for decades, and because they’re happy to be able to support a company that still makes its boots in the USA (in Maine).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The original Bean Boot is unlined, and we like that, since it keeps the shoe true to its nature as a multi-seasonal, versatile piece of outdoor kit. You can decide what kind of weather you want to use it in and choose the thickness of your socks accordingly. But if that’s not your thing, many other styles are available: You can get the boot flannel lined , shearling lined , Gore-Tex lined , or padded around the ankle .

The leather upper on this boot requires some breaking in, and so do the laces, which are coated and slippery to start out. But they do break in eventually.

Also, when you lace the upper tightly, sometimes it can create a sensation of your foot floating around slightly in the rubber bottom part. So depending on variables such as how your foot fits and how thick your socks are, you may experience a small amount of movement inside the boot, but we haven’t found the effect to be a nuisance.

Men’s widths: narrow B, medium D, wide EE

Men’s colors: tan/brown, basil/black/orange, tan/teal/orange

Women’s widths: narrow A, medium BB, wide D

Women’s colors: tan/brown, tan/navy, navy/light blue, teal/black/purple

Two pairs of the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot, our pick for best chelsea rain boot that's unisex and stylishly simple.

Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot

Warmer boots.

This unisex boot is made with natural rubber and lined with neoprene, which adds warmth and comfort to the entire shoe.

Who this is for: If your feet get cold, the 4-millimeter neoprene lining on these boots will go a long way to keep your feet extra warm. These are also great if you want simple, everyday styling without downgrading to cheaper boots made with less durable materials.

Why it’s great: A basic unisex boot in a timeless shape, the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot could be the only bad-weather boot you need. It has a natural rubber sole and an upper 4-millimeter of neoprene lining for added warmth and comfort, plus a subtle 1-inch heel and classic Chelsea boot styling that looks good on everyone.

The neoprene lining is the big differentiator between these and our other options, and it functions in multiple ways. Aside from keeping your foot insulated, and therefore a lot warmer than just a rubber shell, it also hugs the foot a little more, and lines the footbed, giving the whole shoe a much more snug, comfortable fit that only neoprene can.

The Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot, in green, shown from the side.

The ankle opening is narrower than other boots, which is almost always a dealbreaker, but because the neoprene is so stretchy you can still get your foot in and out fairly easily, and your ankle can flex while driving. And that elastic panel, the most recognizable feature of a Chelsea boot, is designed to keep out as much water as possible: The opening itself is quite small, which is important, and the neoprene is waterproof.

Aside from being made from inferior materials, cheaper boots in this style have universally bad design. They’re impossible to pull on, their toe boxes are narrow, and their elastic occupies such a huge space that they couldn’t keep a foot dry on a cloudless day in the desert. We had these problems with both the Sam Edelman Tinsley and the Asgard boot .

Flaws but not dealbreakers: These boots are very close to being our favorite boots because of how well all the design elements work together, but they don’t surpass our top pick in terms of traction and ease of use. The stickiest shoe is the Xtratuf, and that’s important, so we still recommend those as our top choice.

Sizes: Unisex sizes, the equivalent of women’s 5-14, and men’s 4-13

Colors: Alpine green, aqua blue, beetroot and pink, black, light brown and light blue, dark brown, pink, purple, grasshopper green, lavender, lime green, magenta, yellow, navy blue, rust, sky blue, slate gray

Two pairs of the Hunter Original Short Rain Boots, our pick for best rain boots that are high-end, well-made and fashionable.

Hunter Men’s Original Short Rain Boots

A high-quality taller boot.

Hunter boots have an iconic slim silhouette and style, so get them for that reason. But they also have the quality to back up their high price tag, and are easy to slide on and off.

mens travel rain boots

Hunter Women’s Original Short Rain Boots

Hunter boots have an iconic slim silhouette and style, so get them for that reason. But they also have the quality to back up their high price tag and are easy to slide on and off.

Who is this for: People who want to wear something well-made and fashionable. Hunter got its start producing footwear for the British army in World War I and World War II but is more known today as the creator of the de facto “stylish boot” for women.

Why it’s great: We think the men’s and women’s Hunter Original Short Rain Boots are the best choice for a high-end boot. Many readers have asked us if Hunters are worth the price, and we can confirm that the quality lines up with the higher premium. These boots are also more widely available than any other luxury option.

Everything about the design is thoughtful. First, the boot is built entirely of rubber. To reduce some of the weight of that rubber, Hunter removes small chunks of it from the inside of the heel. The tread pattern doesn’t trap debris, and it channels water away like a wet-weather tire, making these boots some of the stickiest in our traction tests. These are the only boots we looked at that had a fully sealed and finished upper rim, enclosing the lining underneath, and after five years of hard use that lining hasn’t peeled, and we haven’t noticed any other significant wear.

The Hunter Original Short Rain Boot in green, shown from the side.

We looked into testing other heritage brands such as Aigle and Le Chameau, but the inventory changed rapidly during our research period. For this reason we decided to pass on testing them for now, because we didn’t want to recommend something that would be hard to find later. However, if we get the chance we’ll give them a look.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Reviewers often mention that Hunters, specifically the tall boots, don’t fit their calves—and that’s why we’d choose the shorty version, which is short enough that this problem doesn’t crop up. The calf buckle is not functional, a surprise considering that every other feature has a purpose. One of our editors at Wirecutter who owns a pair says that although she loves the way her Hunters look, they’re very difficult for her to take off.

Also, the insole is flat-footed and one of the least comfortable we tried, and these boots—especially the tall boots —can be on the heavy side. These are not the boots to buy if you prize comfort above style.

Men’s sizes: 6 to 13

Men’s colors: black, dark olive, dark slate, hunter green, navy, docker grey, ruskea brown

Women’s colors: black, yellow, navy, black gloss, military red, blue stem, olive green, dark olive, black matte, navy matte, red gloss, rorbu rust, rough pink, faded rose, tawny, hunter green, skimming stone, matte red

If you need a boot for heavy muck and mud: Consider the Bogs Classic High for women and men . These easy-to-take-on-and-off neoprene and rubber boots have a glovelike fit and excel in muddy conditions. The sole of a good mud boot should do two things: prevent debris from getting stuck in the bottom, and release your foot from the mud. Unlike rain boots that have flat, squared-off soles, a mud boot often has a rounded sole, which breaks surface tension and releases your foot from sticky stuff. It sounds like a tiny difference, but it works. You also won’t see any narrow channels on the tread of the Bogs Classic; it can take hosing off and prevent detritus from getting stuck in the first place. The women’s version has cut-out handles to make them easier to slip off.

If you want a rain boot that’s more like an everyday shoe: Consider the Saltwater Sperry . They’re styled just like duck boots, so why wouldn’t you want the original Bean Boot? Well, Bean Boots don’t just look like workwear, they are workwear, so the leather is stiff, the laces are rugged, and overall they have a fit and finish that are unmistakably utilitarian. If what you want is something that looks like a duck boot but is a regular shoe for walking around town, we like the Saltwater for men and women . They have been waterproof on our feet for over a year and are extremely comfortable: The fleece lining makes them fit around the foot more like a shoe than a rain boot. Two caveats: we’re not sure how soon that lining will start to get ragged, and raw leather laces, like the type these come with, are notoriously easy to break. If we find any major quality issues we’ll update, but for now, we think you’ll be happy with this purchase.

If you want an under-$100 calf-height rain boot for women: There are a million possibilities, but we really like the Kelly and Molly boots from Joules (if you can find them). The Kelly was a pick for a long time, but the color options seem to have diminished. The Molly is the same model, but it comes in tons of different prints and patterns––which is fun, but hard to make a pick since everyone’s taste is different. Most boots in this price range are made of PVC, which is less flexible and less durable than rubber, but these are all-rubber boots (which is good for durability), with a well-fitting ankle and ergonomic calf. Meaning, they tend to fit wider calves but simultaneously don’t fwap against the back of your leg due to an overgenerous cut.

Seven pairs of different types of rain boots from the ones we tested, placed in a row outside on a patch of grass.

After five years of testing, our research list of boots is now more than 100 models long. We always consider online reviews, and we’ve consulted editorial sources such as Travel + Leisure ,  GearLab , Refinery29 , Esquire , and Outside Online .

A few things make for a bad rain boot. Leaks are an obvious dealbreaker, but beware styles that don’t fit your feet comfortably right out of the box, because rubber doesn’t stretch easily.

Aside from those two points, most rain boots fall somewhere on a spectrum of functionality, and there are things you can look for that will indicate what level of quality you’re getting.

In 2018, we interviewed D’Wayne Edwards , the founder of the Pensole Footwear Design Academy, and he had a few things to say about finding boots that last:

  • Look for boots that have a hearty seam seal between the sole and upper; this is one of the major features that make the boots waterproof. And “a really good rain boot is fully injected as one whole unit, which means that there is no room for water to seep in because there’s no seams, there’s no cement, there’s no separation of one in two pieces—it’s all one piece,” said Edwards. “Hunter does their boots that way.”
  • For increased durability, choose a boot made from latex or rubber. Lower-quality boots are often made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which can crack and warp over time and with use, though it’s often cheaper and lighter than rubber or latex.
  • A weighty boot is an indication of quality, because the maker has likely poured a thicker rubber to create it. “By making it thicker, it adds a bit more weight and body to it so it ultimately will last you a whole lot longer than if you had just the super-cheap, thin, polyurethane kind of a rain boot,” said Edwards.
  • In addition, Edwards said, “With some of the higher-quality boots you’ll find more of a traditional cloth lining on the inside.”

Later, we discovered in our own testing that ergonomics play a big role in what makes a rain boot wearable, and certain shapes and styles perform much better than others. For example, a boot with a rounded toe is much more comfortable to walk in than a boot with a narrow, tapered toe. Traction matters, too—on a regular sunny day, of course, but even more when it’s raining, because metal and wood surfaces become slick.

We skipped testing waterproof shoes, waterproof leather, and lined boots, because they’re slightly different kinds of shoes for slightly different purposes. We did include duck boots; although they have leather uppers, they're uniquely designed for wet weather.

In 2020 we added 14 models to our test pool and took them all out walking in torrential rains and wet weather.

We hit the streets and urban trails in:

  • Guerneville, California : In 2017, this Northern California town evacuated more than 3,000 people after severe flooding in January and February. We tested boots in those conditions, and again in 2019 during an even more extreme flooding event.
  • Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve : This temperate rainforest in California receives 55 inches of rain per year and offered us plenty of muddy trails.
  • Goat Rock Beach , California: Here we found lots of cold-water surf and wet, rocky coastline for traction testing.
  • Claremont, California: The locals of this Southern California college town have little tolerance for inclement weather, and the streets and drainage systems weren’t designed to take much precipitation. With those conditions, when drops hit the pavement, rain boots are a popular item among students.
  • Denver, Colorado: Here, urban commuters are as likely to find spring snow in the streets as they are to sweat through 80-degree days.
  • Mount Evans , Colorado: The slopes of this mountain, which rises over 14,000 feet in elevation, are a great place to find snow when city streets have already thawed.
  • Astoria, New York: The puddles on the sidewalks here rival the size of the potholes in the streets.
  • Ithaca, New York: As the saying goes, “Ithaca is indeed gorges”—which means it has plenty of hills and crags and waterfalls to explore, in addition to the lake at the center of it all.

One of the biggest conversations in the world of outdoor-gear design concerns the sustainability of neoprene. It requires petroleum to make, its production emits carbon dioxide, and it isn’t biodegradable. (Although plant-based materials have seen some advances, the solution hasn’t quite come into focus yet.)

But the other materials that boots are made of have their own environmental issues. PVC is recyclable (if you can find a place to recycle it), but it can release dioxins during manufacturing or disposal and is often made with phthalates, a group of potentially harmful chemicals that humans ingest by consuming food contained in household plastics or inhale by breathing in emissions from landfills. Rubber can be sourced in a destructive way . Finally, EVA foam is recyclable, but suitable collection facilities and infrastructure are rare.

If sustainability concerns you, the best advice we have to offer—after years of collective research on materials sustainability—is to wear your boots. Wear them for decades, beat them to death, keep them out of the landfill, and don’t replace them unless absolutely necessary. We take durability seriously when testing, exactly for this reason.

Former picks

The 15-inch Xtratuf Legacy Boot for men and women is an all-around great boot that we’d still recommend. It’s high quality, it’s flexible at the ankle, it offers super-sticky soles, and it has stood the test of time. But we found that tiny rocks and debris get wedged in the tread and require picking out by hand.

The Madewell Chelsea hasn’t had any durability issues in our testing, but it goes out of stock often, and we’ve come to love the higher build quality and warmth that the Merry People Bobbi has to offer.

The Kamik Lars , a calf-height rain boot for men, had some durability issues reported during long-term testing, with the sole slightly cracking from the shaft. We’ve retired this pick.

Crocs discontinued their AllCast (men’s) and Crocs Jaunt Shorty (women’s) rain boots, which were our picks for people who prefer lightweight boots.

Women’s boots

Many of the women’s boots we tried fit and performed well but couldn’t unseat our top picks for small reasons, such as styling, inferior materials, or small upticks in price. Those include the Bogs Amanda , the Kamik Jennifer , the UGG Sienna , and the Kamik Heidi .

The Everlane Chelsea is a top performer in every way, but lug-soled, toe-capped boots are a look. We also prefer the warmth and fit of the Merry People Bobbi. However, if you like the brand or the styling, this is a well-designed boot we think you’ll be happy with.

We have vetted the quality of the Hunter Women’s Original Tall  and think this is worth buying if you like the look of a tall boot. But this shape overall is simply less wearable than an ankle- or calf-height boot.

As one commenter mentioned, Original Muck Boot Company Chore boots are a favorite among winery and brewery staff and horseback riders. If you love them, get them. But we still think the handled shaft on the women’s-model Bogs boots is an inspired design touch.

We found the Joules Tall Welly Print easy to walk in, but it bunched unattractively at the ankle. Pebbles also became lodged in the outside, requiring hand removal.

L.L.Bean Wellies felt loose around the ankles and didn’t have very good traction.

Both Hunter Women’s Original Chelsea and Sam Edelman Tinsley boots had the same problem as many other rain boots styled like dress shoes. In our tests, we found the shape of the toe and ankle to be slightly restrictive and uncomfortable when walking for extended periods of time.

The Asgard Chelsea boot on Amazon is so popular it’s head-spinning, garnering an average of 4.5 stars with more than 15,000 reviews. Regardless, this is a PVC boot with a narrow toe box and a wide, unprotected elastic panel that can let in water. We can confidently say that we don’t recommend this boot in any way as a functional rain boot.

Men’s boots

As one commenter mentioned, Muck Boots are a favorite among winery and brewery workers and horseback riders. If you love the Chore Mid boots, get them, but we really like the rounded sole of the Bogs for heavy mud.

The Kamik Icebreaker is more like a winter boot, as it is heavy and hot. It performed similar to the Bogs pair in the mud and proved a decent alternative for half the price.

Our testers liked the comfort of Eddie Bauer Men’s Hunt Pac with a plush lining, but the lacing didn’t lie as flush as on the Bean Boot.

The Kamik Yukon 5 is waterproof, but it rubbed our testers at the ankle.

Our male testers found the style of the Hunter Men’s Original Tall boot too feminine (despite the boots’ history as a men’s military and hunting shoe), but it performed among the best in the mud and landed in the midrange on traction tests. If you are into it, get it.

The Hunter Men’s Original Chelsea has the same issues as the women’s Chelsea from Hunter. The shape of the toe and ankle on this model was restrictive, and walking became uncomfortable for our testers. And unlike on the short and tall Hunter boots, the top of the shaft on the Chelsea is unfinished.

Every spring we’re inundated with new boot styles, so we always have something new to consider. As of now, most of the new options are riffs on Chelseas or calf-height boots, and we are always looking for options that are affordable, made durably, and keep water out. If and when we find one that could possibly be a contender for this guide, we’ll call it in.

When the rain really starts coming down, you'll be glad you copped a pair of men's rain boots...or completely bummed you didn't. Your sneakers aren't going to save you from dreaded wet sock. As the weather gets more volatile every year , checking the forecast is about as good as asking a Magic 8-Ball if it's going to rain ("without a doubt" sounds sarcastic any way you read it). However the weather shakes out, it's best to just be prepared, with a raincoat , an umbrella , and certainly a pair of proper waterproof boots.

Rain boots carry an incredible amount of responsibility. Obviously, they should defend your feet from the rain (or they're not actually rain boots and you should check out the return policy for false advertisement). But rain boots should also keep your feet from slipping and come with a grippy outsole. Think about it: what good is all that waterproofing if you end up falling on your ass? Not only that, they should also work well through mud, slush, and perhaps even snow, answering the high calling of a winter boot . It's truly a lot to ask of one pair of shoes.

We're happy to report that there are plenty of choice waterproof shoes on the market that will keep the rain out and look great doing it. So, right now, while you're all dry and cozy, check out all of the best men's rain boots to keep you looking fly and drip-dry, from the best sellers to the It Boots of Instagram to the under-the-radar stompers and beyond.

mens travel rain boots

Xtratuf 15" legacy boot

Xtratuf cut its teeth in the harsh climate of Alaska, earning a reputation for keeping toes bone dry in the face of slushy ship decks and snowy trails. The brand's 15" legacy boots feature an outsole with unmatched traction, breathable interior lining, and rubber exterior that is completely watertight. Though Xtratuf's ankle deck boots are perhaps more popular, we favor the mid-calf version for its extra coverage and style.

8" Bean Boot

The archetypal duck boot was born over a century ago and has held its reputation as a go-to waterproof boot ever since. It's unmistakable rubber toe and outsole give the shoe its signature watertight properties while the gusseted leather portion keeps moisture and debris out. They're also mad comfortable thanks to the built-in steel shank within the insole, which provides arch support for all-day wear.

The Best Rain Boot for the British Countryside

mens travel rain boots

Original Tall Rain Boot

Hunter is a day-one rubber boot manufacturer dating all the way back to the mid-1800s, when vulcanized rubber first came on the market. In the 1950s, after several decades of supplying waterproof boots to civilians as well as the British army, the iconic Original Boot (aka Wellington, aka Wellies) was born. They're embraced by everyone from British royalty to everyday gardners and are a wardrobe staple. The Original Boot looks great in its natural habitat with chinos and a waxed jacket, but a track record of high-end collabs with brands like Stella McCartney and Saint Laurent, can easily be worked into your more capital-F fits.

The Best Budget Rain Boot

mens travel rain boots

Totes Cirrus ankle rubber rain boot

If you're not a fan of the cinder block-like feeling of most rain boots, the Totes Cirrus sheds some weight while shedding sheets of rain. They're thinner and a lot lighter than most other options. Because of that, they're super flexible and can even collapse, should you need to pack them in your suitcase for your flight to Seattle.

The Best Rain Boot for City Slickers

6" Premium Waterproof Boot

If you want sturdy, waterproof boots that aren't full-on rubber rain boots, this is your move. The Best Men’s Rain Boots on Amazon, According to Hyperenthusiastic Reviewers

Low section of farmer walking in field

Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice , in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here .)

And while we’ve written about lots of rain gear — including the best umbrellas , the best women’s raincoats , and the best stylish rain boots — here, we’ve rounded up the best men’s rain boots, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated men’s rain boot

Timberland Men's White Ledge Mid Waterproof Ankle Boot

“These boots excel in all the areas were it counts,” writes one happy customer, especially when it comes to waterproofing. “Timberland hikers in black and ‘definitely’ waterproof as these have always been my husband’s favorites,” another reviewer writes, adding, “He wore them the entire snowy winter through ice, sleet, rain and everything without any leaks.” Another says, “The first day I wore them, it had rained somewhat recently and there was mud everywhere.” They continue, “We reached a sort-of washed out part of a trail and had to hike through a marshy creek bed, and at one point my foot sunk into mud up to my ankle. When I got home and took these off, there was absolutely no sign of mud or creek water in them.” One even attests that they, “Walked well over 30 miles in cities, through fields and on beaches, all while it was raining…Never got a blister, had sore feet, or had damp socks once.” In addition to being waterproof, users praise these boots for being comfortable from first wear with one saying, “These boots fit perfectly, were true to size, and required absolutely no break-in time.”

Best-rated (less expensive) men’s rain boot

Tingley Economy Kneed Boot for Agriculture, 15-Inch

“Why pay more?” one reviewer asks, explaining, “If you don’t need safety toe, and you just want to keep your feet dry, these are great.” Dozens of reviewers agree that for simple tasks, these rain boots get the job done. “I worked for two hours cleaning pavers with a high pressure machine and my feet stayed dry,” one writes, adding, “The lug sole makes for a secure, stable platform to work from.” Another says, “I bought these boots for walking around in ankle deep water for work, and for the most part they are great,” adding, “They fit my feet very well, and are great at keeping me dry.” One reviewer likes these so much they can’t wait for the weather to get bad. “I like it when it rains,” they explain. “I get to wear these boots.”

Best men’s rain boot for everyday wear

Timberland Men's Flume Waterproof Boot

“These shoes will put your podiatrist out of work,” according to one reviewer, who echoes many reviewers’ pleasure with the comfort of these boots. “I wear these for 10-12 hours a day on concrete floors, 6 days a week, and do not hurt at the end of the day,” one writes. Another says, “These fit just like I expected: very comfortable, warm, and waterproof which is essential for me.” One reviewer says, “I bought this boot to walk a pitbull who walks 5-7 miles almost every day.” And they add, “Nothing but the most extreme weather stops her 2 to 3 walks every day. That is why I need a waterproof boot. The boot is comfortable especially for a leather boot which has not been broken in.” Not only do reviewers believe these boots do a good job of keeping water out, but at least one calls out the wicking feature from the inside: “First heavy snow since purchasing them and trudging through drifts some snow went down inside, but interestingly, the interior seems to wick the moisture away from my feet which is fantastic.”

Best insulated men’s rain boots

Kamik Men's Hunter Boot

Reviewers attest that these boots are both warm and waterproof. “I was standing in a very cold creek for over an hour and a half in these today spending time with my beavers and my feet were warm the entire time with only a cotton pair of socks on under them,” one user writes, adding, “ Not a gosh dang leak either. Twenty-five degrees out snowing like a son of a and my feet were good.” Another reviewer who says they bought them for their husband, who wanted “a pull on, waterproof, insulated boot to get on quickly for outdoor winter chores,” says “He’s been able to wear them numerous times in the snow, snowblowing, shoveling, and other winter chores and he is extremely happy with them.” Many chalk the warmth and waterproofness up to the liner, like one who says, “I really do like that the liner is thick and is removable, over the calf, and for a rubber boot has a medium aggressive tread.” Another concludes, “If you’re walking or stalk hunting, these boots will keep your feet warm.”

Best thin-lined men’s rain boot

Servus Comfort Technology 14

As one user concisely puts it, “The boots are comfortable and easy to get on and off.” Hundreds of users agree, and at least one gives credit to the liner for the ease of wear. “Servus boots have a thin liner that appears to be almost like cotton to make it much easier to put the boot on and take it off… it keeps the rubber from sticking to you,” they explain. According to another customer, these boots are great for “anyone looking for a waterproof boot for light outdoor chores,” but dozens of others also say they can weather a storm. One writes, “I have stepped into puddles half way up my shin and my feet don’t so much as dampen,” while another says, “For outdoor activities or on rainy days at the office these boots can keep those tootsies nice and warm and dry.” But as one customer warns, “Runs a bit big, but can easily add a liner or layers of socks.”

Best men’s muck boot

Muck Boot Chore Classic Men's Rubber Work Boot

“If you have a ‘Mud Season’ like we do these will be your best friends,” one reviewer writes of these muck boots, and reviewers dealing with any kind of mud seem to love these boots. One customer, who had a pair for 15 years before they fell apart, says, “I used them for barn chores, cutting up dead trees, and our land is quite mucking.” Another writes, “I would recommend these highly to anyone who works around any kind of muck: gardening, farming, caring for horses, chickens, etc.” Reviewers say these hold up in rain as well. One writes, “I am quite confident this will keep my feet warm and dry in the snow and have used it in the rainy weather we have had in the mid Atlantic and it kept me dry and feet warm.” Another says, “I couldn’t ask for a more comfortable for a better performing waterproof boot,” and after doing “some weed eating in my ditch where grass was about 18 inches high and ground was real muddy because of rain… the boots performed awesomely and they were super comfortable.”

Best men’s rain boots for fishing

XTRATUF Performance Series 6

Reviewers swear by these boats for a dry fishing trip. “I used these for the first time panga fishing at Cedros island,” one user explains. “My feet have never been happier after fishing. Normally I wear flip flops when fishing on my friends boat or panga fishing and after a full day on the water my feet hurt, not with these! I didn’t wear socks and my feet stayed dry and warm ALL day long.” Another fisherman attests that wearing these meant it was their “First fishing trip that my feet were comfortable, and DRY.” In addition to keeping everything dry many say these boots are easy to get on and off, and at least one compares the comfort level to that of a sneaker: “Light like a tennis shoe, fits like a sock on the foot and are easy on and off with the ankle opening.” Beyond fishing though, customers have found these useful for plenty of other rainy day tasks. “I bought them for my fiancé who works for Amazon and delivers all day - GREAT FOR THE RAIN,” one customer writes, while another calls them “Solid boots that we use for walks through park during the rainy season.”

Best knee-high insulated rain boots

Muck Wetland Rubber Premium Men's Field Boots

“Comfortable” is used by hundreds of reviewers to describe these boots. “Muck boots are waterproof, comfortable and have good traction and support whether carrying packs and canoes over rocky/muddy portages, standing in water, or working burying utilities in muddy trenches, or spring ice fishing — I’ve used the same pair for 9 years — no complaints,” one reviewer writes. Another compares these to other rubber rain boots concluding, “These are much sturdier and have a sort of gel like feel that is comfortable on your feet.” One goes as far to say, “These boots are the most comfortable boots I have ever used.”

Users specifically call out the calf potion of this tall boot. “This particular ‘model’ of Muck’s also incorporates a hugging design around the calf that keep the pant leg tucked in nicely, eliminates most of the problems with debris falling into the boot and keeps the feet warmer,” one reviewer writes, while another says, “They fit just snug enough around your calf that no moisture gets in and they are so well insulated.” One reviewer who penned a love letter to these boots even included a line about the fold-over calfs: “I love thee from the edges of my fickle calves, which some days desire warmth and boot-ishness all the way up to mine knees, whilst other days, they prefer the freedom to roll down thy good boot sides and expose themselves to the warm air.”

Dozens of reviewers say these camouflage rain boots are ideal to wear while hunting. “I bought them in October for hunting and have drug several deer out with them,” one reviewer says adding,”I have sat in 20° weather for at least four hours and my feet did not get cold.” Another customer, who calls them “typical bogs with a camo design,” adds, “They are warm and the tread has done well so far in terms of traction in the slippery snow. The bottoms are completely rubber, which is excellent for hunting.” Reviewers also give these boots top marks for holding up in extreme weather. “It’s no joke I have spent hours out in the snow and never had feet problems no leaks and with a liner and a good pair of wool sock feet nice and stay warm.” Another says, “ I wore these while hunting in the snow with temperatures of -4 with the wind chill. They continue, “My feet felt a little chill, but for it being -4 outside I was very impressed with how well my feet felt. I also did a lot of walking in the snow and never had an issue with my feet getting wet.”

In rainy conditions, these boots also earn their stripes. “Wore on a cold rainy camping trip,’ one writes, adding “Feet stayed warm and dry.” Another who says “we travel a lot to the Amazon [jungle] in Peru” adds, “these boots are amazing, no water [gets] in very easy to clean from [mud] that we have a lot in the rainforest.”

Best men’s rain boots for winter

LaCrosse Men's 18

More than 70 percent of reviewers give these boots five-stars and many praise them for being ideal winter boots. “I bought these for canoeing in cold weather (40-28F), but they have become my go-to winter boot with temps as low as 10 degrees,” one writes. Another says, “I love these boots, they are comfortable, warm enough for our -10°F weather as long as one is doing chores outside, easy to get in and out, and usually hold up two seasons, wearing them for 5 months, 3 to 5 hours every day.” Others particularly like how tall these are, helping them walk through whatever nature might throw at them. “The fit was comfortable and luckily these were 18” in height because wanking around in the swampy ground I stepped into an area that anything less would have filled the boot up with water,” one writes, while another says, “They are great wear for deep snow snowshoeing, and you don’t need to wear gators.”

What sets rain boots apart from most other winter boots is the combination of waterproof materials and watertight construction. Most of the best rain boots for men are built from one or two main sections that are sealed together instead of stitched. Many options have a high ankle to stay above puddle height. While you’ll predominantly find pull-on designs, there are some laced models that have gusseted tongues to keep out water. With so many great options available, the best rain boots for men are something every guy should have on hand. If you live in a city and walk pretty much everywhere, stylish waterproof footwear is an absolute necessity. Even if you live in the burbs and drive most of the time, your footwear game could still use some weatherproofing. As for anyone living in more rural areas, you know full well how important it is to keep your feet dry in unpaved terrain. Whether you’re exploring nature or heading to the office, it’s better to be safe than soggy. We highly recommend investing in one of the best rain boots for men listed below.

Hunter is synonymous with rain boots. The high ankle slip-ons, often referred to as "wellies," are made from a solid piece of 100% rubber. Originally developed for famers, the British company became fashionable in the '80s. A new silhouette with a toe cap, reinforced ankle, and flex point at the mid foot, is even sleeker than ever.

Our Deputy Editor for Commerce Christian Gollayan has been wearing Hunter rain boots for years and swears by them. He wears them to the office, to parties, and just to grab a cup of coffee on rainy days. The solid matte black color is so easy to style with everything.

When styling the Hunter Original, think of it like a black Chelsea boot. A smooth toe in an all black finish that looks great with jeans, chinos, or dress pants. If you wear khakis and denim often, go with the navy blue color.

Relatively new on the fashion radar, Xtratuf has been a go-to clothing brand for fishermen and boat crews for a long time. The traction, flexibility, and waterproofing are all top notch. Even though the 6" ankle is low for a rain boot, the elastic cuff keeps moisture out. It also allows your foot to breathe better than a high ankle boot.

If you're dealing with constantly wet surfaces, like a boat or slick city streets, these are great shoes to have on hand. The unique outsole design provides exception grip, even on the wettest conditions. Plus, these are so light and flexible that you can wear them all the time.

The flat sole and low ankle provide a sneaker look. That means they can be styled like a sneaker. The elastic cuff allows you to tuck your pant leg in to keep the water out. Wear them with a straight or wider fit pant for a more casual look.

At this point, the Bean Boot may be the most famous item that L.L. Bean makes. What is less well know is that the legendary Main Hunting Shoes come in a few different ankle heights. If keep your feet dry is the priority, then level up with the 10" ankle. Those two additional inches will make a noticeable difference.

The real secret to keeping the Maine Hunting Shoes waterproof is a signature triple stitch connecting the solid rubber bottom to the leather upper. Not only does this provide a water tight seal, it allows you to resole the boot. L.L. Bean will do this for you by putting a whole new rubber bottom onto the leather upper.

Originally designed for tackling the great outdoors, the Bean Boot has since become a fashion icon. You can wear these rain boots with anything, from canvas work pants to your best fitting jeans . Our style editors can attest that you can wear this to just about any casual function.

Most Blundstones are great rain boots, but the #1320 is a gorgeous color design made exclusively for Huckberry. A two-tone tan sole on a nut brown upper will match just about everything in your closet. All of the Australian boot maker's weather proof features are on full display, including waterproof leather uppers and slip resistant traction outsole.

Blundstones boots are so popular because of their superb comfort and style. What doesn't get enough credit is how easy these boots are to maintain. The treated leather uppers just wipe clean of dirt and dust with a wet towel. No need for polishes or creams, easy as can be.

Our style editors are fans of Bludstone rain boots across the board. If you're looking for a comfortable, easy to wear, and easier to style every day boot, look no further. We tend to favor the darker colors, but this Huckberry exclusive might be the best looking pair we've come across.

Slip-on Crocs are as comfortable as they are functional, but they are not great in the cold rain. Fortunately, Crocs makes a rain boot to deal with that. The look is very similar to the brand's signature sandals, but with a high ankle and and all the holes filled in. You've got the same super grippy outsole to handle any slippery surface.

Sticking closely to the original Crocs look that has made the brand so popular means that you can style these boots in much the same way. Wear them for a casual look that places comfort fist and foremost. Of course, you can't use any jibbitz on these Crocs.

These are great rain boots for anyone who has to work in wet conditions. Crocs' proprietary Croslite material is light, flexible, and supportive. It will keep you comfortable on your feet for long stretches

When the weather is wet but also warm, you want something light and breathable. The Digger Slip On Shoe is an ankle rain boot that wears like a sneaker. It is water tight up to your ankle, so you won't have to fear any puddles. A super grippy outsole design will keep you sure footed on slippery surfaces.

The side gussets are super stretchy so you can slide your feet right in and out, with a pull tab to help you put them on. Since the upper is not only water proof but super durable, these are great work shoes for all manner of yard work and outdoors chores. A moisture-wicking design also prevents sweaty feet.

We like how you can style these like a pair of slip on sneakers. Rock them with jeans or chinos like you would your go-to sneakers. They also work great with shorts for the summer time.

All duck boots are optimized for the rain, but these duck boots from All-Weather are optimized for comfort as well. From the padded ankle to the sneaker-style outsole, these rain boots will keep you light on your toes. The high gusset and waterproof materials will keep you dry on your toes as well.

These boots are built for outdoors adventures with strong grip, high ankle support, and a shock-absorbing midsole. All these features come in handy for traversing the city as well. Pretty much anywhere there is rain, you'll be happy to have these rain boots on your feet.

Our style editors like how sporty these duck boots are. Where most options lean towards hunting boots, these are closer to a hiking boot . That means that they stye well with more casual everyday apparel like chinos, wool sweaters , and hoodies .

Classified as a snow boot , but really more of an all-weather boot, the Lawrence from Kamik is rugged and comfortable. It is a duck boot with a high ankle and triple stitch welt. On the inside, there is a cushioned EVA insole and a thermal fleece lining. This Canadian made boot can handle everything the winters up north have to offer.

The lining on this boot is warm but not bulky, so it has a sleek silhouette. There is a tactical look to the all black color design and tough outsole. It looks good with dressier clothes like slacks and a blazer, or even a full suit. You can always wear them to the office and change into a pair of loafers as well.

Part boot, part sneaker , the Explorer Next Boot from Sorel is a weather resistant casual shoe . The flat and flexible sole provides easy movement. An insulated high ankle will keep you dry and warm all winter long. We love the super grippy outsole that will keep you moving in the wettest conditions.

As weird as it sounds, we like this rain boot because it doesn't look like a rain boot. All the features that define a rain boot are there. A high gusseted tongue and sealed welt will keep you nice and dry. There is ample insulation to boot. Yet, when you have a pair of pants pulled over the top, the Explorer Next Boot looks more like a fashionable high top sneaker.

We think you can rock these all winter long as a stylish pair of shoes that goes with jeans or chinos. If you ever get stuck in the rain or snow, you're covered.

Not just a sneaker company, SeaVees makes some great boots too. The Marshall Boot is an all rubber take on a military boot that is built to handle the wettest of conditions. A high ankle, gusseted tongue, and deep treaded outsole will keep you dry and sure footed. A soft 100% recycled polyester fleece lining adds some comfort and insulation.

For an extra styling flare, SeaVees provides a two laced option for these rain boots. Thick leather laces provide a more rugged look, similar to what you find with work boots . The other option is a recycled polyester in orange that provides a little flashier look.

In fitting with with the California footwear brand's coastal aesthetic, the Marshall Boot goes well with denim and chinos. Style it with flannel shirts, chambrays, and your favorite broken-in tees. Go with a rain parka or a nice warm peacoat when the temperature drops.

What to Look for in Rain Boots for Men

line break

Material: Leather is by far the most preferred material for boots overall, but when it comes to rain boots, you want some rubber or synthetic materials involved. Synthetic rubbers and similar compounds can be molded into shapes that minimize seams and openings in the boot. These materials are 100% waterproof so without any openings, there is nowhere for water to get in.

Seam Construction: This is how each part of the boot is attached. Many rain boots minimize seams all together by using one or two pieces per boot. If there are seams, look for taped seams. That means a piece of tape covers the seam stitching on the inside, making it water tight.

Welt: The welt is how and where the upper part of the boot is attached to the sole, running around the entire exterior at the base of your foot. This is by far the most vulnerable part of the boot to moisture. If the connection is not water tight, then your foot will get wet. That's why many rain boots either have the sole and upper as one solid piece of material, or the two parts are sealed together with glue. Even the best sewn welts, like a 360 Goodyear welt, are vulnerable to moisture over time.

Insulation: If you're planning to wear rain boots all year, another factor is insulation. A thick boot will leave your feet sweating in the summer, while a thinner option in the fall may have you pulling out your winter boots a little early. Luckily, rain boots come insulated or non-insulated. Insulated boots will keep you warm in cold weather, but mind the weight—it'll also make the shoe heavier. Meanwhile, lighter, non-insulated alternatives may suit you better in warmer weather.

Tongue Gusset: A gusseted tongue is when the full or partial length of the tongue is attached to the upper of the boot. Tongue Gussets are a part of the tongue, meaning that it is all one piece of material, which folds over and tucks in when the boot is tied. This is an important feature to look for because it creates a solid barrier that prevents moisture and dirt from getting into your boot.

Who They’re For

Best for light hikes, wet sports fields, rainy commutes, and (much) more.

Why We Love Them

Bogs’ Sweetpea Tall Rain Boots are a sleek and functional option well suited for everything from light hikes to rainy commutes. We tested these boots in heavy Vermont flooding, braving downpours and puddles during errands and traversing wet sports fields. Impressively, our feet remained completely dry in these watertight boots, and we didn’t notice any moisture inside the boots after encountering wet weather.

The odor-fighting interior effectively wicks way and evaporates sweat, preventing the uncomfortable swampy feeling often associated with rubber boots. And discreet pull tabs and a generous shaft circumference make these easy to take on and off (and also a great option if you have wide calves). Lightly lined, this pair offers a comfortable cushion and decent warmth for mild temperatures. Plus, the textured rubber outsole delivers substantial traction that keeps us from slipping on element-inflicted surfaces.

The supportive nylon shank in the footbed enhances stability, giving this pair a more secure feel compared to standard rain boots. And if you prefer to shop sustainably, you’ll appreciate the natural and recycled rubber and algae-infused footbeds. We also appreciate the durability of the thick yet lightweight materials, which proved resilient throughout testing.

Potential Flaws

  • This boot is not available in half sizes, but we were still able to find a comfortable fit. If you’re in between sizes, consider whether you plan to wear thick socks or insert an orthotic.

Most Valuable Insight

“I've worn these boots in very heavy downpours and walked through puddles and my feet never got wet, nor did I notice any moisture on the insides of the boots.” — Carolyn Malcoun, Verywell Fit product tester

Best Men's Overall

Carhartt 6in waterproof wedge work boot.

Versatile style

Keeps feet dry and warm

No pull tab

Sizes: Men’s 7 to 15 | Materials: Leather upper, polyurethane midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 6 inches | Weight (Pair): 4 pounds | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best for men who need a versatile boot for outdoor work, light hikes, and casual nights out in wet weather.

Most of the shoes we tested feature a rubber upper, providing that classic rain boot style. But Carhartt’s Waterproof Wedge Boots are constructed with a durable leather upper that not only looks sleek but also proved completely waterproof during our wet-weather walks. And while leather tends to lack breathability, these shoes effectively locked out moisture without causing our feet to become overly hot and sweaty.

Throughout testing, we regularly wore these comfortable boots during rainy commutes to work, frequently testing the limits of their waterproofing and well-cushioned midsoles on long, 10-hour days. The thick, wedge-style outsole lifts ever so slightly, keeping our feet above gutter puddles. We felt confident in the boot’s slip-resistant traction as we navigated deep puddles and traversed wet pavement, grass, and hard flooring.

Overall, the boots’ style and performance make them an ideal, versatile option to safely take you from point A to point B, even to dinner afterward. We also love that these come in various neutral shades so you can dress them up or down as you please.

  • The shoes don’t have a pull tab for easy on-and-off wear, but the laces do help you find a customized fit.

Best Women's Hiking Boot

Hi-tec altitude vi i wp hiking boots.

Extremely comfortable

Keep feet dry and warm

May be too wide for narrow feet

Sizes: Women’s 6 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, foam midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 5 inches | Weight (Pair): Not listed | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best for hiking, outdoor work, and navigating storms.

When trail conditions get wet, you need a hiking shoe with a protective upper and grippy outsole—like Hi-Tec’s Women’s Altitude VI I WP Hiking Boots. The water-repellent leather upper ensures dry feet, and the durable rubber outsole prevents slips and slides. Plus, the microfleece membrane kept our feet warm (but not sweaty) in colder conditions.

While designed for tackling technical terrain, this supportive ankle boot was put to the test on trails and the rainy New York City streets. As the weather shifted from sun to heavy rain, we were impressed by the boot's protection and traction—even in deep water and on slick hardwood surfaces. We also appreciate how the contoured arch support and heel cradle provide a supportive fit , while the thick foam midsoles absorb impact for hours of comfy walking.

  • Designed for natural foot splay, these boots may run slightly wide for narrow feet.

“I wore these outside in a pretty big storm and was impressed with how dry the shoes and my feet stayed. After splashing around in some shallower puddles, I went and found one that completely submerged the shoe up to the edge of the laces. I stood there for some time waiting to see if the water would eventually seep through—it never did!” — Alexandra Dwy, Verywell Fit product tester

Best Men's Hiking Boot

Timberland white ledge mid waterproof hiking boot.

Logos and sporty look aren’t for everyone

Sizes: Men’s 7 to 15 | Materials: Leather upper, foam midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 4.75 inches | Weight (Pair): 2 pounds | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best for hikers and workers who want a protective waterproof boot for on and off the trail and job site.

Timberland White Ledge Waterproof Hiking Boots are built tough with versatility to tackle the rainiest hikes, work days, and commutes. Crafted from responsibly sourced, waterproof leather and rustproof speed lace hook hardware, these boots are rugged and sturdy (without feeling bulky) to weather any storm. They also proved comfortable and supportive enough for everyday wear.

During testing, we noticed that the grippy traction worked equally effectively on pavement, grass, sand, and mud. The cushioned foam midsole, flexible arch shank, and thick rubber outsole work together to absorb impact on hard surfaces. Constructed with sealed seams and a gusseted tongue, there’s no chance of water entry. The soft, recycled fabric linking also breathes well, preventing sweaty feet.

  • The conspicuous logo and sportier look of this boot may not be for everyone’s taste, but we feel they do strike a casual balance between a work and hiking boot that is pretty versatile.

“I would recommend these as a hiking boot or as everyday footwear. I have a difficult time finding comfortable footwear and these are exceptional.” — Steven Schrimpf, Verywell Fit product tester

Best if you want a sleek, classic rain boot that’s comfortable for walking short to moderate distances.

Asgard Chelsea Ankle Waterproof Rain Boots combine style and function at a budget-friendly price. They are one of the lightest shoes on our list, so they don’t feel clunky and pack well for travel. And with a sleek style and a variety of color options, you can wear them for just about anything (we wore them to work, on walks in the rain, and even to a muddy pumpkin patch). Importantly, our feet remained completely dry during every wet-weather adventure.

These boots are equipped with a textured, durable rubber outsole that keeps us sure-footed on slippery surfaces. They also feel well-cushioned, never once aggravating one tester’s plantar fasciitis . Thanks to the convenient pull tab and elastic entry, slipping these boots on and off is a breeze. The classic style, cushioned comfort, and overall versatility make this budget-friendly pair a win for both your wallet and wardrobe.

  • These boots have very minimal arch support, so you may need to add insoles for flat feet or supportive orthotics.

Less breathable than others

Sizes: Women’s 6 to 11 | Materials: Leather outsole, foam midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 6.5 inches | Weight (Pair): 4 pounds, 13 ounces | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best if you want a versatile boot with exceptional traction for climbing slick stairs, descending gravel trails, and more.

Come rain or sleet, Bogs’ Holly Lace Leather Boots keep you safe and sure-footed on all terrains. These fashion-forward boots not only make a stylish statement for a night out in the rain but also prove practical for outdoor activities in wet weather. The dense and durable rubber outsole delivers grippy traction on wet pavements, trails, and grass. Made with sustainably made, ethically sourced, well-cushioned midsoles, the boots are also supremely supple for comfy all-day wear.

Beyond their impressive traction, these rain boots are (importantly) completely watertight. We repeatedly submerged them in ankle-deep water to find that our feet remained warm and dry. Along with waterproofing, the high-quality leather upper stands up against dirt and debris. Plus, the moisture-wicking, anti-odor lining —made from recycled materials—proves highly effective, especially if you have particularly sweaty feet.

  • These are slightly heavier than other options we’ve tested, but we still found that they felt very comfortable for long hours of wear.
  • While the thick waterproofing did cause our feet to overheat slightly, the moisture-wicking lining kept our feet dry and sweat at bay.

“These boots repel water better than any boot I have owned. I wore them in the rain, stepped in ankle-deep puddles, and even stood at the edge of a small lake—my feet stayed dry the entire time.” — Kristin Cleveland, Verywell Fit product tester

Best for wet and cold days when you need extra warmth for running errands, commuting, and casual walks.

Conquer freezing rain, hail, and snow with Lands' End’s Insulated Sherpa Fleece-Lined Duck Boots . We wore them around the chilly, drizzly streets of Seattle to confirm that they offer waterproofing and warmth. Thanks to the sherpa fleece-covered shaft and footbed, as well as added insulation, these boots provide warmth down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Durable and easy to wipe clean, the shoes maintained their original quality during wet and cold conditions throughout testing. The rubber upper locks out all moisture, while the textured outsole keeps you sure-footed. A leather pull tab and adjustable laces also make these easy to slip in and out of. Plus, the slightly raised heel adds support and stability when walking on wet pavement, slick grass, and more.

Best for rain, mud, and other wet climates and conditions, whether you’re trudging through chores outdoors or checking off your errand list.

If you have wide feet, look for shoes with a wide toe box , like L.L.Bean’s Women’s Bean Boots. They are specifically oversized to accommodate thick winter socks, so there’s ample room for wide or swollen feet. The lace-up style not only ensures a secure fit but also allows for customizable adjustments. And convenient heel tabs also make slipping them on and off a breeze.

Beyond comfort, hand-crafted duck-style boots stand out for their durability. Triple-stitched for longevity, they also come with a one-year guarantee. We wore these boots daily around town and during rainy hikes in the woods of Arkansas, finding that they deliver effective waterproofing, reliable traction, and hours of comfort . They’re also easy to clean for when you (inevitably) encounter off-road dirt and debris.

  • One of our testers, who has extra-wide feet, tested the wide size and found an almost too-roomy fit. If you’re purchasing these boots, we recommend sizing down—especially if you have narrow feet.

“I loved the fit. I have tried other brands of this type of shoe but they were never wide enough even in the wide sizes—these are.” — Megan Wood, Verywell Fit product tester

Merry People

Unisex, for men and women

Supportive cushioning

Insoles easily pop out when removing

Sizes: Women’s 5 to 12, men’s 4 to 11 | Materials: Rubber upper, midsole, and outsole | Shaft Height: Not listed | Weight (Pair): 2 pounds, 14 ounces | Our Overall Rating: 4.8/5

Best for a stylish, yet functional, addition to your wet-weather wardrobe.

Want to add a splash of color to brighten dreary days? We love Merry People’s Bobbi Rain Boot, a classic Chelsea-style boot that comes in 17 unisex colors. Function takes no back seat to fashion with this pair because they locked out all moisture as we walked through the rainy streets of New York City (purposefully stepping in puddles and wet foliage). And the durable, textured rubber outsole kept us sure-footed on super-slick city sidewalks.

Made with a lightly cushioned midsole and arch support in mind, these shoes are comfy enough to wear all day —so much so that we even reached for them on dry days. Thanks to the stretchy lining and dual pull tabs, we found them easy to pull on and take off. We also appreciated that, despite wearing thick winter socks, our feet never felt overly sweaty or hot throughout testing.

  • Almost every time we removed these boots, the insoles would pop out. Though it can be an annoying inconvenience, it's certainly not a dealbreaker.

Equipped for rugged environments

Sporty look isn’t for everyone

Sizes: Women’s 6 to 11 | Materials: Mesh and recycled polyester upper, foam midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: Not listed | Weight (Pair): 1 pound, 12.5 ounces | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best for long-lasting comfort and reliable traction during hikes, commutes, sporting events, sightseeing, and more.

On’s Cloudrock 2 Waterproof Boots provided all-day comfort when put to the test on the bustling, rainy streets of New York City. The midsole offers ample cushioning and shock absorption (like with many of our favorite On Running shoes ). The rocker shape, ankle support, and sole shanks encourage speedy, safe strides—which we found invaluable on the slick city streets.

Designed for hiking, these lightweight shoes also feature a protective toe cap, grippy traction, and lateral stability that keep your feet safe in rain or snow. During testing, we purposefully walked through puddles to find that these boots passed our wet test, effectively locking out moisture. While protective, the mesh upper is super breathable, preventing our feet from overheating. We also appreciate the speed hook laces, which are easy to customize and adjust, even when wearing warm gloves on cold days.

  • This shoe has a super sporty look that isn’t everyone’s style. Still, we think it's a comfy, versatile option for all types of activities in wet weather.

“I purposefully would walk into puddles to give them a test, and they passed. I could see them being awesome shoes for heavy rain days and even snow.” — Cassie Basford, Verywell Fit product tester

Best Chelsea Boot

Front and back heel tabs

Feel a bit stiff at first

Sizes: Women’s 5 to 14 | Materials: Leather upper, synthetic midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 5.75 inches | Weight (Pair): Not listed | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best if you want a stylish and functional Chelsea boot for casual, daily wear in wet weather.

For a fashionable slip-on boot that checks both boxes of style and function, we love Sam Edelman’s Laguna Waterproof Chelsea Boot. We tested this pair against some major puddles and our feet remained completely dry. And over time, after many splashes and rainfall, the durable leather upper held up. We also appreciate the deeply lugged outsoles, which lend plenty of non-slip grip to muddy passes, slippery pavement, and slick hardwood floors.

In testing, we noticed that the boots felt lightweight, with a sturdy and supportive fit . They also feature handy front and back pull tabs, as well as stretchy elastic gores, that make them easy to slip on and off. From rich black to soft ivory, this super stylish pair comes in plenty of color options to match your aesthetic.

  • While this pair is super comfortable, we did find them slightly stiff at first. But after a few wears, the leather upper loosened up.

Best Breathable

Vessi weekend waterproof chelsea boot.

Ultra-comfy

Versatile for wet and dry conditions

No half sizes

Sizes: Women’s 5 to 11 | Materials: Knit textile upper, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: Not listed | Weight (Pair): Not listed | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Best if you live in warm, wet weather or have particularly sweaty feet.

Rain boots can get downright stuffy (and stinky), since waterproofing materials tend to be thick. That’s why we love Vessi’s Weekend Chelsea Boots, a slipper-like street-style shoe that combines breathability and protective features. They feature a temperature-regulating, all-weather knit upper that promotes airflow without letting in any rain. We even stepped into a creek (in the pouring rain), and these proved completely watertight.

During testing, we also wore these shoes in dry conditions because they’re so comfy. The lightweight feel and well-cushioned midsole let us stand for hours at a time—whether it’s a long work day, running errands, or walking the dog. And in both wet and dry conditions, the grippy rubber outsole kept us sure-footed and steady. Plus, front and back pull tabs make these easy to slip on and off .

  • These rain boots don’t come in half sizes, so we recommend upsizing if you’re in between.

Xtratuf x Salmon Sisters Legacy Boot

  • Durability 4 /5

Sizes: Women’s 6 to 11 | Materials: Rubber upper, foam midsole, rubber outsole | Shaft Height: 15 inches | Weight (Pair): 5 pounds, 4.8 ounces | Our Overall Rating: 4.6/5

Best if you need a tall rain boot for heavy rain, deep puddles, or sloppy mud.

Xtratuf’s Salmon Sisters Legacy Boots are one of the most protective boots we tested—thanks to their acid- and chemical-resistant, durable construction that protects beyond water. These make a great choice for wet weather as well as messy conditions (think job sites and muddy hikes), since the knee-height shaft protects your full lower leg from splashes, mud, murk, and more. And when you’re wading through low waters, we love that you can roll down the shaft t o let your legs breathe.

Built with a woman-specific heel and toe counter for a comfortable and secure fit, we liked that the boots are well-cushioned and offer arch support. After wearing them on several rainy days, we found that the thick rubber soles are ultra-non-slip —even on the slipperiest surfaces. Beyond waterproofing and protection, these boots feature fun fabric lining that adds a stylish flair.

  • This protective pair is one of the heaviest on our list, but the boots still proved comfortable and did not weigh us down.

Rain Boots for Walking We Also Tested

We’ve tested over 55 pairs of rain boots but only included 14 in our final list of recommendations. While these four have some noteworthy features, they didn’t quite make the cut:

  • Hunter’s City Explorer Short Boots stand out for their excellent waterproofing and traction. We also appreciate the mid-height boot shaft that hits the leg at a flattering spot. But the chunky heel makes the boots feel heavy and the odd fit causes our heel to constantly slip—causing discomfort and distraction.
  • Fashionable and sustainably hand-made, Ilse Jacobsen’s Rub Boots are a comfy and lightweight option. But after weeks of rigorous testing—and considering the higher-than-average price tag—we think the quality is lacking for the cost.
  • During testing, Kamik’s Heidi 2 Rain Boots proved to be easy to clean and durable, holding up well during extended treks through puddles, mud, and various terrains. However, they fall short in terms of comfort for prolonged distances or daily wear.
  • Stable and supportive, we like Sorel’s Brex Chelsea Boots for their unique, fashion-forward style. But the thick rubber material lacks breathability, and the narrow shaft makes them challenging to put on. This, in turn, caused rubbing and bunching of our leggings, compromising the overall comfort of the boots.

After testing more than 55 pairs of rain boots , Bogs’ Sweetpea Tall Rain Boots were the clear winner for their sleek look, grippy traction, and comfortable fit. As we continue to test each pair of rain boots at home, including some new releases, we will update our list of recommendations if we notice anything substantial that we haven't already documented.

What to Look for When Shopping for Rain Boots

  • Height: When the wrong boot height meets high waters, it can mean the perfect storm for cold, drenched limbs and feet. Always consider the conditions in which you’ll be wearing your boots when shopping. If you plan on off-roading in areas of high grass or crossing streams, choose a taller boot. Shorter boots may suffice for a rainy urban commute. However, in heavy rain or if you anticipate encountering deep waters, always opt for tall boots to protect against splashes, muck, and even wind gusts.
  • Weight: It can be an exhausting leg workout to lug along in heavy clompers. Bulky boots can be also hazardous in some scenarios but can provide some stability in others. Take note of the weight of your boots and ensure the materials resist and shed moisture to maintain all-day comfort.
  • Comfort and Support: When selecting rain boots, prioritize a supportive midsole and plush cushioning, tailored to the activity at hand. If you will be spending many hours walking in the boots, ensure they have a good heel-to-toe roll. For prolonged activity in wet conditions, opt for a breathable boot that effectively locks out moisture. While you probably don't want to wear rain boots on a rowing machine , you'll definitely want to throw them on when you're on the way to the gym.
  • Insulation: When facing heavy rain, it’s important to keep your feet warm and dry . Many rain boots are unlined, delivering a roomy fit that can slip on and off easily and accommodate pant layers or thick socks. On colder days with unlined boots, you may have to double down with warm, breathable socks . Alternatively, you may choose a rain boot with built-in insulation made from fleece, wool, neoprene, or Thinsulate. Insulation is measured by the lining’s GSM (grams per square meter) and/or temperature rating. The higher the GSM weight, the heavier (and warmer) the insulation.
  • Waterproofing: It goes without saying that when it’s raining (or it’s pouring), it is essential to select a pair of rain boots with sealed seams and waterproof technology. You can also opt for boots with water-resistant outer materials (like rubber or treated leather) at a height that will prevent water entry. After all, dry feet are warm feet.
  • Traction: To stay afoot as surfaces get slippery, you’ll need good traction. Rain boots with deep, cleat-like lugs are great for snow and mud while shallower treads with softer rubber are best for sticking to paved and slick stone surfaces. For a versatile pair that can tackle diverse terrains, consider boots with medium-sticky rubber outsoles, like Vibram soles.

How We Tested the Rain Boots for Walking

To find the best rain boots for walking, we spent more than two weeks testing over 55 pairs of rain boots from top, trusted footwear brands. When we evaluate rain boots—through at least two outings of varied distances, difficulty, and weather conditions—we evaluate each one based on the following key criteria:

  • Fit: After unboxing each pair of rain boots, we try them on to see how they fit. We evaluate if they feel true to size, narrow, or wide, and if we would recommend sizing up or down. During test walks, we gauge comfort level: Are the boots immediately comfortable? Is there adequate arch and ankle support? Does the material feel sturdy or flimsy? Is there sufficient breathability to prevent overheating and sweating? Rain boots earn high scores when they fit properly, providing comfort and support without causing discomfort, pain, hot spots, or excessive sweating.
  • Durability: As we continue to wear the rain boots, we assess the feel of their constrictions and materials, distinguishing between low and high quality. We carefully consider the weight of the boots: Do they feel too light, heavy, or just right? Is the weight due to their length, sole thickness, or another notable feature? We also observe if the rain boots show unusual or excessive signs of wear and tear by the end of the testing period. We prioritize well-made boots that hold up over time.
  • Performance: Rain boots for walking should be completely waterproof and have a non-slip outsole to deliver traction on diverse terrain. We carefully evaluate whether each rain boot meets that criteria by testing them in wet conditions (rain, snow, and more). Rain boots that keep us dry, warm, and safely sure-footed earn high scores in this category.
  • Waterproofing: When shopping for rain boots, the most important consideration is (undoubtedly) waterproofing. To thoroughly assess this key category, we perform a wet test by stuffing paper towels into the boot and running the entire exterior under a steady stream of water. After letting it sit for five minutes, we examine whether the paper towel is wet or not. Rain boots earn a perfect score if they prove to be watertight, yet breathable, keeping feet comfortable and dry.
  • Value: To give each rain boot a value score, we don’t look at its price until testing is complete. Rain boots receive a high score if the price aligns with their value and features, and if we would be willing to pay the full price for the product, or potentially even more.

We collaborated with industry experts throughout our research, testing, and reporting process. Some guided us in pinpointing key features to look for in rainboots for walking, while others helped shape our testing method.

When and why should you wear rain boots?

You should wear rain boots when—you guessed it—it’s wet outside. This will ensure a more comfortable and safer experience by preventing the accumulation of moisture that can cause a damp environment for blisters, fungus, infection, and odor-causing bacteria to thrive, says Jacqueline Prevete, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon.

Do you wear socks with rain boots?

Yes. You should wear moisture-wicking, breathable socks (made with a wool or synthetic blend) with your rain boots to keep your footwear fresh and (most importantly) prevent your feet from getting cold or developing uncomfortable blisters, funguses, or infections.

Can you wear rain boots in the snow?

Yes, some rain boots can be worn in the snow, provided they have adequate insulation to keep your feet warm. They should also have traction with deep lugs to provide stability on slush and ice, preventing slips and falls.

Certified personal trainer Jessica Murtaugh, NASM-CPT , has spent a fair amount of years living and commuting in rainy climates. Best Men's Hiking Boots for Hitting the Trail in Style

When you’ve got some serious trails to traverse, you need to get serious about your shoes. As much as you might love your trail running shoes , what you really need is a reliable pair of hiking boots, specifically designed for keeping your feet safe, dry, and comfortable when tromping mile after mile. Below, you’ll find our picks for the best hiking boots for men. Now take a hike!

How to choose the best hiking boots for men

“There are a huge number of variables between hiking boots,” warns Alex Legezynski, founder of West London Personal Training . He suggests paying careful attention to the following:

Your anatomy

“The importance of a great fit can not be understated,” says Legezynski. “Your foot shape—and any pre-existing imbalances or vulnerabilities—must be accounted for in your shoe selection.”

“Upper materials impact the boot's durability, breathability, and water resistance,” explains Legezynski. “Full-grain leather is durable but may be less breathable, while synthetics like nylon are lighter and more breathable. Some boots combine materials for a balance of features.”

“Midsoles provide cushioning, and EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is a common material for these due to being lightweight, as well as its shock absorption properties,” he continues. “Some boots feature PU (polyurethane) for more durability and stability, but it can add weight.”

“Look for outsoles with a lug pattern suitable for the terrain you'll encounter,” he concludes. “Vibram soles are renowned for their durability and traction. Consider the hardness of the rubber—harder compounds last longer, but may offer less grip.”

“As a general rule, think, ‘always snug, never tight,’” suggests Legezynski. “A looser fit may feel comfortable in the short term, but the friction and injury potential are punishing. This might mean some discomfort at first, particularly in harder-wearing boots that need breaking in, but breaking in should be considered part of your hiking preparation.”

Terrain and duration

“Lighter boots are generally more comfortable for shorter hikes and day trips, while heavier boots with more robust support are suitable for longer treks and carrying heavier loads,” says Legezynski. “Strike a balance based on your intended use.”

How we selected the best hiking boots for men

Our selections were made through careful consideration of our experts’ advice, personal experience, and scouring customer feedback to ensure that all of our picks had mostly positive reviews. For the latter, we took special account of longevity, comfort, and value for money.

Tips for care and maintenance

Since a washing machine could easily damage a pair of hiking boots, you’re going to have to hand wash them. “Be sure to use a soap that’s safe to use, preferably a soap specifically made for cleaning boots,” advises Fratto. “Water, a cloth, and a dedicated toothbrush for the task are really all you need to clean your boots.”

“Just as important is how you dry them,” he adds. “Remove the insoles and dry them separately, making sure to air dry in a room temperature setting with no additional heat source (if you want to speed up the drying process, use a fan). Be sure your boots and insoles are completely dry before reinserting them and putting them away for storage.”

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What hiking boots are most comfortable.

“It really all depends on the terrain that you'll be hiking on,” says Dr. William Spielfogel , board-certified podiatrist and medical advisor to The Good Feet Store . “If you're hiking on hard surfaces, additional cushioning in the shoe will be helpful. Walking on softer surfaces will provide natural cushioning and shock absorption and will require less cushioning in your hiking boot or shoe.”

Should I get light or heavy hiking boots?

“A heavier shoe will cause you to exert more energy when walking,” warns Spielfogel. “Most importantly, hiking boots should be comfortable and lightweight and made of materials to support and protect your feet over uneven terrain.”

Is it okay to wear hiking boots every day?

“Wearing hiking boots every day can be acceptable in certain situations, but it depends on your specific needs, activities, and personal comfort,” says physician assistant and Merrell brand ambassador Leila Nabavi, PA-C . “If the hiking boots are comfortable for everyday wear and provide adequate support, there may be no issue with wearing them regularly.”

“If you have specific foot conditions or concerns, it's essential to choose footwear that supports your foot health,” she continues. “Some people may need specialized shoes or orthopedic footwear for daily use, so check with a podiatrist for individualized concerns you may have or need.”

For other daily shoe recommendations, try our guide to the best Chelsea boots for men .

Are hiking boots uncomfortable at first?

“Generally speaking, hiking boots should never be uncomfortable,” says Fratto. “However, if you have a boot that’s heavier and offers more support, then you will need to break it in. Don’t let your time on the trail be the first time that you’ve worn them out and about–take the time to get used to them beforehand so you can enjoy your hike as much as possible and not worry about any potential discomfort.”

What are the different levels of hiking boots?

According to Legezynski, most hiking boots–whether bought from any of the above brands, Columbia , Muck Boot Company , The North Face , Dicks Sporting Goods , Backcountry , or anywhere else–fall into the following categories:

  • Class A (hiking shoes) : Athletic shoes with added protection for well-maintained trails and gentle terrain
  • Class B (mid-weight boots) : Mid-weight alpine boots for rough trails, off-trail, and multi-day hikes with ankle protection
  • Class C (off-trail heavy boots : Designed for rough terrain, these are crampon-compatible, with toe caps and rugged soles–you’d use them for challenging treks and alpine traverse routes
  • Class D (mountaineering boots) : For climbing big mountains, emphasizing crampon compatibility, rigid soles, and insulation–suited to high-altitude mountaineering, ice climbing, and extreme winter conditions

Even the lightest packer can find room for Shedrain’s Supermini Flat Umbrella in their suitcase. This tiny umbrella lives up to its name, packing down flat when not in use.
