“We were all upset because we were like, ‘How the hell can you cancel a cruise (around) two weeks out?’” said Mitchell, 35, a photographer based in Atlanta.

The cruise line gave the family a refund and a credit on a future sailing and offered to reimburse them “for non-refundable, pre-purchased transportation change fees incurred,” according to an email from the line Mitchell shared with USA TODAY. The family made the most of their planned time off anyway, renting an Airbnb in Orlando, Florida, and going to Disney World instead.

Cruise lines may cancel sailings for a variety of reasons, forcing passengers to change their travel plans, sometimes with little notice.

Why do passengers get bumped from cruises?

A number of factors can prompt a cancellation.

Norwegian Cruise Line recently canceled months of sailings for its Norwegian Spirit ship scheduled between July 3 and Sept. 18, 2024, because of a full ship charter. The cruise line notified guests in May and offered them full refunds and future cruise credits, according to a letter to passengers the line shared with USA TODAY.

Margaritaville at Sea also scrapped sailings set to take place between May 22 and June 1 so its ship could go to dry dock, offering to rebook passengers at no incremental cost and giving them onboard credit, according to a spokesperson. Vantage Deluxe World Travel recently canceled multiple trips – some “due to the vessel’s readiness,” according to its website – leaving a number of passengers waiting on refunds .

Dry docking – when ships are taken out of passenger service for regular maintenance or refurbishment – is usually planned years in advance, according to Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel. However, if a ship is damaged while in service, it may need to go to dry dock immediately for repairs.

“That's the more common scenario (to result in a cancellation) where a ship has to be pulled from service for one-plus weeks,” said Feldman.

Charter-related cancellations tend to take place with more notice than emergency dry docking, according to Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. She said she has never seen passengers bumped as a result of a full-ship charter less than nine months to a year ahead of sailing.

If a cruise is canceled, the line typically notifies passengers directly or through their travel adviser, Feldman said.

Cruise lines’ cancellation policies are not regulated by the federal government the way airlines’ are , and while Feldman said the contracts passengers agree to when they purchase their tickets are “very cruise line friendly,” the lines generally always provide refunds and work to accommodate travelers on another sailing.

Passengers may be able to transfer their booking to another cruise in place of a refund, Kuther said. If they are rebooked on a voyage that costs less than their original sailing, they would be refunded the difference, but if the new sailing costs more, they would need to pay the remaining balance.

Cruise lines may also offer additional compensation, such as a future cruise credit, though passengers could have to choose between that and a refund, depending on the company. 

“It can really vary and it depends on each individual circumstance,” Feldman said. “I will say that the closer (the cancellation) is to the sail date, the better the compensation will be.”

While the line will generally cover costs that are part of the cruise purchase – such as flights booked through the line – passengers are generally on their own for other expenses incurred as part of the trip, except in extreme circumstances such as last-minute cancellations. Kuther and Feldman recommended travelers purchase travel insurance before sailing, which can help cover those costs.

While Kuther said cruise cancellations are “pretty rare,” they are aggravating when they happen.

“It’s just very frustrating,” Kuther said. “Nobody wants to have their vacation canceled.”

Companies have cruise cancellation policies in place for refunds or postponements if your trip has been canceled—as many have. If your trip hasn’t been canceled but you’d like to opt out of an upcoming booking, know that many cruise lines have adopted significantly more relaxed cancellation and rebooking policies . Here’s everything you need to know about special cruise cancellation policies in place during the COVID-19 pandemic—as well as standard cancellation policies to expect at other times.

Cruise cancellations and coronavirus

Many cruise lines—including major players like Princess, Norwegian, and Celebrity —have temporarily suspended operations worldwide in response to coronavirus-related risks and restrictions. All companies have discontinued ocean-going departures from U.S. ports until at least April 11. “As you can imagine, the situation is rapidly changing day to day, and even hour by hour,” says Erika Richter, senior director of communications for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), a trade association.

Given the situation’s fluidity, travelers booked on sailings over the next few months should anticipate the possibility of a last-minute cancellation by the cruise line. In those cases, your cruise line or travel agent will contact you directly regarding compensation, in the form of either a full refund or future cruise credit.

If the cruise line hasn’t canceled your trip but you’d like to change it, know that many lines have temporarily replaced their standard cancellation or postponement penalties with more flexible policies. Specific terms and conditions vary by company, but most lines will now allow you to get a full cruise credit toward a future sailing date with no penalty; fewer lines are offering cash refunds.

“It’s worth noting that some lines are incentivizing the decision to rebook by offering some additional perks in the form of onboard credit —so you could be getting some added value if you decide to rebook your cruise,” says Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of leading cruise review site Cruise Critic. If you go this route, Cruise Critic advises waiting a few weeks to do so, since lines are now overwhelmed with handling current cancellations and getting passengers returned safely to port from in-progress sailings. The site also advises patience, noting that refunds could take up to 90 days or more to be issued.

For sailings that are farther out, you don’t need to rush to a decision. These relaxed policies—many of which allow cancellations up to 48 hours in advance of departure—allow you to take a wait-and-see approach. Just be sure to review your cruise line’s fine print before reaching any decisions. “If the line ends up canceling off your cruise as part of their suspending service, you could have more leeway in terms of compensation and a refund offering,” McDaniel says. “But that will vary by line and circumstance.”

Richter also suggests employing the services of a trusted travel specialist who can help navigate your cruise cancellation policy and advocate with the company on your behalf. “There are so many unknowns right now as this situation progresses,” she says. “For travelers who are committed to sticking with their future voyage, staying informed is the most important step to take.”

Previously, cruise lines had been considerably more restrictive with their cancellation and modification rules—for instance, you might expect to lose at least part of your payment if canceling within 90 days of your departure, and if you canceled within a few weeks of a voyage, you might lose all of it.

Before coronavirus struck, reasons for cruise cancellations had been significantly more limited in scope. One possible scenario was extreme weather. While cruise lines can usually preemptively reroute ships in the face of approaching hurricanes or other significant weather events, alternate arrangements are not always achievable. In September, for instance, Hurricane Dorian forced several cruise lines to cancel scheduled sailings out of Floridian ports.

Other times, unforeseen mechanical or technical issues can mean a ship is unsafe to sail, as was the case for three of Carnival Vista’s sailings from Galveston last summer , which were canceled due to a malfunction with the ship's maximum cruising speed capabilities.

In these circumstances, travelers can expect the option of a full refund or a replacement booking on an alternate sailing. Some lines may take it a step further still and reimburse the cost of any travel arrangements made (like non-refundable flights or hotel bookings), as well as offer additional vouchers for discounted or upgraded future sailings.

While the particulars of individual cruise line contracts vary, most lines we contacted stated that such policies are typically determined on a case-by-case basis. All major lines adhere to the Cruise Line International Association's Passenger Bill of Rights , which explicitly outlines that guests are entitled to a refund for cancellations due to mechanical failures. It’s an unprecedented time in our society right now, with the spread of COVID-19 affecting all aspects of daily life. And unfortunately, the virus pandemic is also putting a lot of travel plans on hold.

The cruise industry has been hit hard since halting operations in 2020.

There’s a lot of information out there, and we wanted to make understanding these updates easier for you. This post includes all of the cruise cancellation policies in a single place, so you can easily find the information that’s important to you.

Since this is a fluid situation, these policies are subject to change, and we’ll be updating this piece on an ongoing basis to make sure you have the most up-to-date information out there.

The following Azamara sailings have been canceled:

  • Select Azamara Journey sailings through May 2022 have been canceled
  • Select South America and Antarctica itineraries have been canceled through February 2022

All sailings booked by January 31, 2022, scheduled to depart by April 30, 2022, are included in the Cruise With Confidence program. This gives you the ability to cancel your cruise with at least 48 hours’ notice and you’ll receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit that can be applied to any cruise booked by April 30, 2022, scheduled to sail by December 31, 2022.

Cancellation Policy Due to COVID-19

If you’re scheduled to sail with Azamara on a canceled cruise, you have 3 choices in regards to a refund:

  • Receive a 125% Future Cruise Credit that can be applied to any sailing through December 31, 2022, or within 1 year of the original sailing date, whichever is later. Any prepaid amenities or packages will be automatically refunded to the original form of payment. Guests who chose the “Cruise with Confidence 100% Future Cruise Credit” option aren’t eligible for the 125% credit option.
  • Request a 100% refund to the original form of payment . You should receive a refund within 45 days of submitting your request.
  • You can keep the destination the same and “lift and shift” your cruise if your new cruise is within 4 weeks of your originally scheduled departure date.

Carnival Cruise Line  

Currently, there are no blanket cancellations for Carnival cruises.

Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Inspiration have been permanently retired. Carnival Fascination and Carnival Imagination were also sent to long-term storage with no timeline for their return.

Carnival hasn’t published an updated policy regarding canceled cruises, but according to crowdsourced data, a full refund or a future cruise credit plus onboard credit is being offered.

Celebrity Cruise Line

The following cruises have been canceled:

  • Celebrity Infinity sailings have been canceled through 2022.
  • Any other canceled sailings can be found here

If your cruise was canceled by Celebrity due to COVID-19, you’ll have 2 choices in regards to a refund:

  • Receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit
  • Request a 100% refund to the original form of payment.

If you have a Future Cruise Credit, the value that represents 100% of the fare paid on the original booking has no expiration date. If you also received a bonus 25% Future Cruise Credit, that amount will expire on the original expiration date or 12/31/22, whichever is later.

The following sailings have been canceled:

  • Queen Victoria departures through April 29, 2022 (select Queen Victoria sailings will be transferred to Queen Elizabeth — these will be transferred automatically and guests should receive a new booking reference)
  • Queen Elizabeth originally scheduled departures through May 17, 2022, have been canceled; new cruise itineraries will be replacing the originally scheduled cruises
  • Any cruise that has a stop in a Canadian port has been canceled through February 2022

If your cruise was canceled, you’ll receive a 125% future cruise credit of the deposit and 100% future cruise credit of any additional money paid that you can use on any sailing booked by September 30, 2022.

Holland America has made the following schedule changes:

  • Cruises departing March and April 2022 on Noordam will be moved to March and April 2023
  • Cruises on Oosterdam will resume on May 1, 2022
  • Cruises on Westerdam will resume on May 8, 2022
  • Cruises in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Antarctica are canceled until May 2022

Guests booked on a cruise that has been canceled will be rescheduled on a later cruise, or a refund can be requested.

As opposed to multi-destination land and air travel, where you typically have to transfer from one aircraft, train, or car to another to reach your stops, many cruises let you visit multiple destinations in a single journey. Most are also all-inclusive, allowing you to enjoy a long list of amenities and benefits on the same trip. You can access a delicious buffet daily, a cushy stateroom, live entertainment, gyms and spas, pools, and much more. The best part? You only have to pay once.

Unlike flights , cruises are also less tumultuous in terms of schedule, with cancelations coming few and far between. That is until COVID-19 happened and upended the whole industry. Even now that restrictions are much more relaxed, cancelations still occur, and if not, what happens is the opposite: cruises cram more people on board to keep up with the demand. "The issue right now is fewer people are canceling because of COVID, so they're having to readjust that algorithm a bit to account for the fact that more people are just going no matter what, " Wall Street Journal reporter Jacob Passy told CBS News .

If you plan on going on a cruise now or in the foreseeable future, you must be aware of your rights during a cancelation. Here's what you need to know.

You're entitled to a full compensation

Finding out that the cruise you've been excited about has been canceled can cause frustration. Unfortunately, it happens beyond our control, driven by factors like inclement weather, mechanical issues, and overbooking. The best course of action is to exercise your rights as a passenger and check what compensation you can get from the cruise line in exchange for your troubles.

Pre-pandemic, it was usually up to the cruise line's discretion how they would compensate passengers for canceled trips. Some do a full refund, while others offer travel credits they can use for future vacations. However, in 2022, the Federal Maritime Commission issued a new ruling to better protect consumers from financial setbacks caused by cancelations. "It's the first time that the law has been changed since 1881, since the California gold rush," FMC Commissioner Louis Sola told NBC 5 . "People can be confident moving forward."

As outlined in the new rules, passengers can expect a full refund from cruise operators if their booked cruise trip has been canceled or delayed for three or more days. The refund includes the full amount they paid, including miscellaneous fees. Operators are also mandated to clearly communicate to passengers their refund policies to manage everyone's expectations.

You may also request to be rerouted somewhere else

Should you experience a cruise cancelation but don't want to give up on your trip entirely, there may still be ways to pursue your on-deck adventures. If you don't like a cash refund, you can contact the cruise operator to see if you can board a different cruise. Aside from repayments, cruise operators are expected to offer alternatives that may be more convenient to guests, such as a reservation on a different sailing. However, you may have to learn how to adapt quickly, as the alternative cruise may have other destinations. But hey, an adventure is an adventure, right?

What's more, you must also be ready to pony up more money on an alternate sailing if it's more expensive than your original trip. Since you're only entitled to the full amount you paid previously, any charges on top of that will need to be shouldered by you — unless the cruise operator decides to be generous. "It can really vary and it depends on each individual circumstance," Jared Feldman, owner of Jafeldma Travel, shared with USA Today . Perhaps the only way you'll get to offset the additional costs is if you have reliable travel insurance, so make sure you have complete coverage before booking your cruise — or any trip for that matter. Although conditions on cruise ships are generally safer than on land, you might be wondering if there's a way to cancel or postpone your voyage due to COVID-19 concerns. In some cases, the answer is yes.

The good news for those itching to cancel a booking is that it's easier than you might think with some lines — at least for now. Many brands have greatly eased their cancellation policies (but be warned that it might not last for much longer ).

In those cases, you will be offered either a future cruise credit equal to at least the amount you paid, a refund to your original form of payment or a combination of the two. Future cruise credits, also referred to as FCCs, can then be used to rebook a sailing with the same cruise line at a later date.

Ultimately, the type of refund you'll receive depends on the specific policies for your cruise line, how close you are to the sailing date, whether or not you've made your final payment and whether or not you actually have COVID-19.

Given some lines' current flexibility — allowing cancellation as close as 48 hours to embarkation day — even if you're tempted to cancel right now, it could be prudent to wait to see how the situation plays out. That's especially true if your sailing is several months away. Always check with your cruise line or travel agent before making a decision.

For those who made bookings by April 29, 2022, for sailings departing before December 31, 2022, Azamara is allowing passengers to cancel as little as 48 hours ahead of their sailings. They will receive 100% of the cruise fare paid in the form of FCC. The credit is to be used by June 30, 2023, either to book another sailing departing by June 30, 2023, or toward payment for another existing booking.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival 's cancellation policy has changed recently to become less flexible. If you test positive for COVID-19 within 10 days of your sailing date or have been a close contact of someone who tests positive, you are entitled to FCC in the amount of 100% of the cruise fare paid. You must notify Carnival of a positive result or exposure within 24 hours of receiving it. (Proof is required.) If you choose to cancel your sailing without a positive test result, your refund will be issued based on the line's standard cancellation policies .

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity cruisers who booked by March 31, 2022, for sailing dates through Sept. 30, 2022, can cancel as little as 48 hours before sailing for a full refund. If you have paid in full, the amount will be issued in the form of FCC. Credits must be used by May 31, 2022, to book a new cruise that departs by Dec. 31, 2022. Cunard Line

Cunard 's policy is somewhat convoluted in that it offers a percentage refund based on not only the amount of time that remains between cancellation and the sailing date but also the length of the sailing. Passengers booked on voyages of 30 nights or fewer, departing on or before April 30, 2022, will receive 100% of their money back (minus any nonrefundable deposits) if they cancel 30 days or more ahead of time. They will receive 75% if they cancel between 22 and 29 days out, and 50% between 15 and 21 days out. All money will be forfeited for cancellations two weeks or less before sailing. For sailings departing May 1, 2022, or later, the line's standard cancellation policies apply.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney allows passengers who test positive for COVID-19, who have symptoms of COVID-19 or who have had a known exposure to someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days to request either a full refund to their original form of payment or a credit to be applied toward a future Disney Cruise Line sailing. Credits must be used to book a voyage that departs on or before Sept. 30, 2022.

For sailings departing through Sept. 30, 2022, travelers can cancel at least 60 days from their sailing date for reimbursement. If they cancel fewer than 60 days prior, refunds will be issued according to the temporary, flexible schedule . Cruisers who cancel without one of the above qualifications will be reimbursed based on the line's standard cancellation policy. Rather than cancel, booked passengers on departures through May 31, 2022, can instead choose to change their sailing date at no cost if it's done at least 15 days prior to the embarkation date.

Holland America

For bookings made by Sept. 30, 2022, for sailings departing on or before Dec. 31, 2022, Holland America is granting passengers full refunds when they cancel for any reason at least 30 days prior to sailing. Those who test positive for COVID-19 will receive full refunds right up until embarkation day. Refunds will be returned to the original form of payment, less any nonrefundable deposits or cancellation fees, which will be returned in the form of FCC to be used on a future booking.

MSC Cruises

If you book a cruise with MSC Cruises through May 31, 2022, and the voyage departs through March 31, 2023, you can change your booking up to 48 hours prior to your sailing date if you decide that you can't or don't want to embark. You must rebook your sailing when you cancel, and it must be for a sailing (any ship, any date) departing by March 31, 2023. This offer does not apply to world cruises or world cruise segments.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has, until further notice, extended its flexible cancellation policy, which allows passengers to cancel sailings scheduled to depart during a declared public health emergency , even if they haven't fallen ill with COVID-19 or been a close contact of someone who tests positive for COVID-19.

Passengers who booked by April 30, 2022, for sailings departing through May 31, 2022, are also covered if local regulations prohibit them from traveling or require them to quarantine. Cruisers can cancel to receive a full refund in the form of FCC to be used for a different sailing, which must depart by Dec. 31, 2022. Passengers who test positive or who have been exposed will also be granted 100% FCC.

Princess Cruises

For bookings made by May 31, 2022, for sailings departing on or before September 30, 2022, Princess allows passengers to cancel 30 days or more prior to the sailing date as long as a public health emergency remains in effect. They will receive 100% of the cruise fare paid to the original form of payment, minus any penalties or nonrefundable fees, which will be returned in the form of FCC to be used to book a future voyage with the line.

Passengers are able to cancel closer to the sailing date if they or someone in their travel party tests positive for COVID-19. (Proof of a positive test result is required.)

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Cruisers who book under Regent 's Regent Reassurance program are able to cancel within 15 days of sailing to receive a full refund in the form of FCC to be used for a different voyage.

However, sailings booked after April 30, 2021, don't qualify, so any bookings made in the latter half of 2021 or in 2022 will fall under the line's standard refund policy . Under that policy, cruisers will forfeit anywhere from 15% to 100% of the amount they've paid, based on when they cancel and how long their sailing is. The line will also retain a $100 penalty fee, which is returned to guests in the form of onboard credit to be used for a future booking.

Royal Caribbean

Passengers who booked by March 31, 2022, for cruises departing on or before Sept. 30, 2022, are protected by Royal Caribbean 's Cruise With Confidence policy, which entitles them to 100% of the cruise fare paid in the form of FCC if they cancel for any reason. The FCC must be used on a sailing that departs within one year of when the FCC is issued. Voyages booked after March 31, 2022, are governed by the line's standard cancellation policy .

The line has also made allowances for anyone who tests positive for COVID-19, has a member of their party test positive or who has been deemed a close contact within 14 days of sailing. Anyone in those situations is eligible to receive a refund or FCC. Refund requests must be received within six months of cancellation or the embarkation date (whichever is earlier). If a refund request is not made by that time, passengers will automatically receive credit for a future voyage.

Seabourn is allowing more flexibility for travelers who aren't comfortable cruising right now. For bookings made prior to May 31, 2022, for voyages departing before September 30, 2022, passengers can cancel up to 30 days before sailing and receive a full refund to the original form of payment, minus any nonrefundable amounts, which will instead be issued as FCC. If you test positive for COVID-19 or have been directly exposed fewer than 30 days before you embark, you're also entitled to the above.

For sailings that don't fall within those parameters, the line's standard cancellation policies apply.

For all Silversea sailings scheduled to depart through March 31, 2023, cruisers can cancel and choose either a full refund or credit to be used for a future cruise booking with the line. This is also true for anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been a close contact of someone who has tested positive within 30 days of embarkation day.

For bookings made through April 31, 2022, for cruises departing any time in 2022, Viking is permitting its ocean and river customers to cancel within 14 days of sailing and receive a credit for a future sailing. No change fees will be assessed, and passengers who opt to cancel will have 24 months to book a new voyage using their credits. Plus, unlike most other lines' credits, Viking's are transferable, so you can gift them to a friend or family member if you don't think you'll use them.

Virgin Voyages

Anyone who books a Virgin Voyages sailing on or before May 31, 2022, for a cruise departing on or before Oct. 15, 2022, is eligible to receive a full refund in the form of FCC when they cancel at least 48 hours before they're scheduled to set sail. Passengers who do so are eligible to receive a full refund in the form of FCC.

Windstar Cruises

Cruisers booked on Windstar voyages departing through June 30, 2022, can cancel as late as 48 hours before their scheduled embarkation day. Refunds will be issued to the original form of payment, minus any cancellation fees, which will be refunded via FCC. Credits must be used toward a new booking within 24 months of issuance.

My cruise has been cancelled, what are my rights?

If your cruise operator expects your departure to be cancelled, the operator should inform you as soon as possible. If this is on the day of travel, you should be informed no later than 30 minutes after your scheduled time of departure.

Meals and refreshments If your cruise is expected to be cancelled, you should be provided with free snacks, meals and refreshments in relation to the waiting time.

Refreshments should be provided even if the reason for the cancellation is bad weather. However, they need only be provided if they are available or can reasonably be supplied.

This will be affected by a number of factors such as the facilities in the port terminal or on board the ship, the time of day and the proximity of the terminal to local amenities.

ABTA tip The Department for Transport suggests that reasonable refreshments for a delay of over four hours would be water or tea initially, with a snack or light meal. If the delay goes over eight hours, a hot meal should be provided.

Re-routing or reimbursement When your trip is cancelled, your cruise operator should offer the choice of an alternative or a refund.

Accommodation When a sailing is cancelled and an overnight stay becomes necessary, your cruise operator should offer you accommodation free of charge, if possible.

This can be on board the ship, or ashore. The cruise operator is also free to look at other options, such asking you to go home, or to make your own arrangements and offering to reimburse your expenses. The cruise operator may limit accommodation costs to €80 (approximately £66) per night per passenger for a maximum of three nights.

However, no overnight accommodation has to be offered, or costs reimbursed, where the cancellation is caused by weather conditions endangering the safe operation of the ship.

Compensation You don’t have an entitlement to fixed amounts of compensation. Your rights to compensation come under the Package Travel Regulations.

Compensation wouldn’t be due where the operator can’t provide the services due to exceptional circumstances or an unforeseen event.

What to do if your flight is cancelled or delayed

Passengers at Manchester Airport are facing major disruption after a power cut forced two of its three terminals out of action .

More than 50 flights have been cancelled from both Terminal 1 and 2, while journeys still going ahead are severely affected by delays.

Those who have seen their flight cancelled will be left wondering what happens now and what their rights are.

We’ve taken a look at exactly what you can do when your flight is cancelled or delayed.

What am I entitled to if they cancel my flight?

When flying to or from the UK, passengers are fairly well protected by UK laws when it comes to flights being cancelled.

Here’s a breakdown of what those rights are, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

First of all, airlines must provide you with care and assistance, which includes supplying a reasonable amount of food, drink and means of communication.

This often comes in the way of vouchers to use at shops and restaurants.

If you are re-booked onto a flight the following day, the airline must provide you with accommodation, usually in a nearby hotel, as well as transport to and from the airport.

Even if the delay lasts longer than one day, an airline must still put you up until they are able to provide the service and get you to your destination.

When major disruption hits, airlines sometimes struggle to assist the large number of passengers. If this happens to you, make sure you keep every receipt for everything you paid for until you board your replacement flight.

This must be within reason, such as food, drink and emergency accommodation.

Will I be refunded for a cancelled flight if I no longer wish to fly?

In short, yes.

CAA guidance says: ‘You can get your money back for all parts of the ticket you haven’t used. For instance, if you have booked a return flight and the outbound leg is cancelled, you can get the full cost of the return ticket back from your airline.

‘If you are a transfer passenger and you have already completed part of your journey, you are also entitled to a flight back to your original departure point when your connecting flight is cancelled and you decide not to continue your journey.’

Will I get compensation for a cancelled flight?

This is a bit of a grey area, but the rule of thumb is that if your flight is completely cancelled without 14 days notice, you are entitled to claim compensation.

Each airline will vary in their cancellation policies – and it’s worth checking how it works for the specific airline you are flying with.

The cause of the cancellation can be a loophole for airlines, however. For example, if it wasn’t the airline’s fault, don’t expect to receive any compensation.

The CAA says: ‘Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other “extraordinary circumstances” are not eligible for compensation.’

Whether or not a power cut would fall under this category would be a topic of debate, so you will need to follow up with your specific airline regarding cancellation compensation.

What to do if your flight is delayed

The first step to protecting your holiday from delays starts before you even pack your bags: travel insurance.

Many insurers offer cover for customers who can prove they missed their flight due to ‘extraordinary circumstances’ out of their control, according to Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel.

He writes on Which? : ‘Evidence that you turned up at the time advised by the airport or airline could be crucial, so keep your bus ticket or parking stub, and any receipts from shops or restaurants inside the terminal.

Travellers who experience delays at check-in or security processing should also ‘make a fuss’ if their flight is due to take off soon for example by asking staff to take them to the front.

Mr Boland added: ‘Buried in the T&Cs of many airlines is a promise to help, and some will let you rebook for free in such instances.’

If staff are hard to come by, airlines must usually provide updates online – but if this fails, you can also enter your flight number on FlightRadar24 for real-time tracking of the plane you’re due to catch.

Under UK law, airlines must provide passengers experiencing ‘significant delays’ with food and drink (usually in voucher form), means of communication and, if their flight is pushed back a day, temporary accommodation and transport to the lodgings.

‘Significant delays’ mean waits of more than two hours for short-haul flights, three hours for medium-haul and four hours for long-haul.

Passengers due to travel on UK or EU-regulated flights are also legally entitled to compensation for delays of more than three hours to the arrival time – starting with £210 for short-haul flights – unless caused by ‘extraordinary circumstances’ out of their hands.

These rules cover any flights leaving from a UK or EU airport and do not change if the airline is based in another country, according to MoneySavingExpert .

That means they still apply if you fly between two EU countries, or fly elsewhere on an EU-regulated flight that has nothing to do with the UK.

They also usually apply if the delay stops you from boarding a connecting flight from a non-UK, non-EU airport if both legs were part of a single booking, or if that connecting flight was similarly delayed.

If your flight is delayed by more than five hours and you no longer want to catch it, you are entitled to a full refund regardless of the cause, according to Citizens’ Advice.

Be wary of doing this if you still plan to get to your destination by other means: the return flight purchased through your original operator may be included as part of the same refunded booking.

Our ships are fully enclosed and climate-controlled for your comfort. We sail rain or shine all year long. Captains may adjust routes to best manage conditions during sailing and cruise will be canceled if it’s not safe to be on the water.

Guests who cancel 10 days or more in advance of their departure date and time will be offered a 50% refund on the total amount paid for their booking (excluding our non-refundable Ticketing Fee). Cancellations less than 10 days in advance will not be refunded. Future open credits will not be offered for any cancellations.

People love to hate Carnival Cruise Line. After sailing on the new Carnival Firenze , I now understand why: The food was as bad as the incessant upselling.

The company's ships have a reputation for being affordable but rowdy, so much so that it had once threatened to fine unruly travelers $500.

But this sour standing doesn't seem to be negatively impacting business. Its parent company, Carnival Corp , experienced "record" deposits and high-priced bookings in the first quarter of 2024.

Despite its growing popularity, I don't think I'll willingly book another Carnival cruise, or at least Carnival Firenze, again.

And it's not for the reasons you might expect.

My four nights on Carnival Firenze weren't stellar — not because of the rambunctious crowd (shocker, I know), but because of the terrible food and annoyingly endless upselling .

Carnival certainly lives up to its reputation of having affordable cruises.

The cheapest Carnival Firenze itinerary in 2024 is a four-night sailing for $359 per person, including taxes and fees. That's less than $90 a night for a hotel room at sea, unlimited food, onboard activities, and the chance to see Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico.

Not bad, considering new ships typically have a steep pricing premium (Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas mega-ship starts at more than $260 a night).

The fares can’t be beat. And the quality of the food reflects that.

Look, I'm not expecting caviar and freshly shaved truffles on every plate. I can respect a sloppy burger and simple pasta, as I expected for a Carnival cruise . And seeing complimentary dishes such as beef tartare was unexpectedly welcomed.

Unfortunately, everything I ate was mediocre.

The best word to describe most of my Carnival Firenze meals is "sweet."

The honey-mustard dressing at the buffet salad station was so sugary it could've been a dessert. But even the thick, saccharine dressing couldn't moisten up the incredibly bone-dry chicken.

Sure, sure. Honey mustard is supposed to be jam-packed with sugar, and I poured it with a heavy hand. But I think a salad dressing shouldn't send diners into a sugar rush.

Some savory dishes were overpowered by unnecessary sweetness.

My main dining room entrée of shrimp and fish cake could've been great. The shrimp was perfectly bouncy, and while the fish cake was questionably mushy, it was seasoned well with a garlicky, oniony dried spice mix.

Unfortunately, the accompanying tomato sauce, sweetened like it was meant to be a sorbet, lost the dish all of its accolades.

A good tomato sauce strikes a delicate balance between sweetness and acidity. This was just sugar — and a profound ability to make decent seafood taste bad.

The dining room's clams and linguine could've also been a win if not for some major issues.

I didn't love that it came with only four or five clams, but I do love pasta dishes with a contrasting texture!

Unfortunately, said "texture" was a hard, small piece of plastic hidden among the mound of noodles.

If the food wasn’t sweet, it was heavy.

The ship's Guy Fieri-branded burger joint accrued lines before it opened for lunch. I, drawn to hyped food places like a moth to a light, was excited by its popularity.

Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy it for long. I hit a food coma about four bites into the decadently greasy pepperoni-pizza burger, served with a thick slab of fried mozzarella.

By day two, I began dreaming of light vegetables, freshness, and fiber.

But the two complimentary dining venues that catered to these needs — the Fresh Creations salad stand and La Strada Grill with sandwiches and sides — were only open during the last day of the sailing. At that point, the lack of fiber had already done its damage.

I even tried ordering off the vegan menu for breakfast one morning. Unfortunately, I was denied my meatless dish: The waiter said vegan breakfasts had to be ordered the night before, a restriction I've yet to see on another cruise.

The mediocre food marred my experience, but it wasn't the worst part of my Carnival cruise.

That title goes to the incessant, in-your-face upselling, done with a persistent annoyance reminiscent of an annoying fly buzzing around your home.

On paper, Carnival offers some ultra-cheap cruise fares . In reality, once you board the ship, you're met with an unsavory number of pay-to-play options that could quickly double your vacation cost.

Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly upselling onboard amenities and activities.

On Norwegian's newer ships, this includes slapping a $10 fee on the mini-golf course. On Royal Caribbean's latest vessel , this means paying $49 for a ropes course that could be completed in less than a minute.

But on Carnival , even complimentary venues had pay-to-play options.

For example, the buffet, where guests had to pay for chicken wings.

Or the free dining room, where breakfast juices — shown by a waiter at each table — could be purchased for $5.

Looking for a midday snack? You could hit complimentary venues such as Il Mercato for sausages or the pizza stand for, well, pizza. Just be prepared to pay $6 if you want a Korean barbecue steak pie instead of pepperoni.

The dreaded dollar sign followed me day to night, on and off the ship.

The nightly movie screenings were free to attend. But if you want a bag of buttery popcorn, you'll have to pay $4.

That's the same price guests had to pay if they wanted to take a shuttle from the port in Ensenada to downtown.

Even scheduled onboard activities had unnecessarily gratuitous upcharges.

Tea bags during "Tea Time" were $1.50. Unaware of the price before being approached by the server, I declined on the principle of not wanting to pay.

A few minutes later, he returned to inform me that he did, in fact, have two free options stashed behind the up-charged ones: Lipton and Bigelow green tea — the only tea bags available at the buffet.

At breakfast, a server joked that my croissant and Lipton tea would cost $20.

If I didn't know any better, I would've believed him. It seemed as if almost everything I wanted came with a sneaky price tag, as seemingly intended by Carnival's parent company.

Travelers spent more money aboard Carnival Corp's ships in the first quarter of 2024 than in the same time last year. To continue this success, Josh Weinstein, the president and CEO of Carnival Corp, told investors in March that the company would continue to "push and press" its cruise lines to "optimize and maximize both on the ticket and onboard spending."

In truth, the ship does have some redeeming qualities.

The mini-golf course, waterslides, board games, and elevated ropes course were complimentary and a great way for families to pass sea days.

I arrogantly found the whole Italy-themed decor (it is called Firenze, after all) a bit tacky. But if you love the idea of a garish Las Vegas-ified Italy — think, the Walmart version of the Venetian — you could find some joy in the kitsch.

But these amenities weren’t enough to overlook the mediocre food and difficult-to-resist upselling.

Cruises are meant to be relaxing and fun. There's nothing relaxing about having to think about your finances whenever you're met with a pay-to-play option, which felt constant on Carnival Firenze. Nor is there anything fun about chewing into a piece of hidden plastic.

If you want the vacation of your dreams on Carnival's new ship, be prepared to pay up. But at that point, you may as well save that money for another ship — or cruise line.
