15 Best Places to Visit in Maldives

Left to the mercy of the soft and lapping Indian Ocean, the islands of the Maldives have been sculpted and formed into unquestionably one of the most quintessentially beautiful tropical places on the globe.

Ranging from the powdered beaches of the northern atolls to the earthy sea shacks and fishing hamlets of the southern isles, the whole nation can be found strewn across the turquoise waters some way from the Indian subcontinent.

Most visitors will land in the throbbing, pulsing city of Male, packed onto its own pinprick of an isle and boasting spice-scented markets and great mosques.

Most also don’t linger long before they hit the seaplanes or boats and make for the shimmering private bays of their chosen resort, where infinity pools and over-water cabanas are the norm.

More recently, new local guesthouses and the discovery of rolling waves have begun transforming the Maldives from honeymoon hotspot to surfing, adventure and backpacking destination – paradise is now open to all, it seems.

Lets explore the best places to visit in the Maldives :

Islamic Centre

Thrumming with scooters and cars and Indian bazaars stacked with coconuts and spice, the city of Male – the capital of the Maldives atolls – has the frenetic feel of a place crammed into a slot that’s too small for it.

And that’s because it is.

Although rarely visited (most travelers bypass the city on seaplanes heading straight for their resort), the town is crammed onto a pint-sized islet in the North Male Atoll.

It manages to fit some fascinating sights between its streets though, like the 17th-century Friday Mosque and the gold-tipped Islamic Centre.

Male Market is another must – just be sure get your haggling skills up to scratch.

2. Hulhumale Island

Hulhumale Island

Sat just across the sparkling waters from the capital of Male, the island of Hulhumale is forever growing and growing as more and more land is reclaimed to house the sprawling urban tendrils of the city.

It’s also the home of the Velana International Airport, which is the main gateway to these paradisiacal islands for most.

However, don’t be put off by how all that sounds – Hulhumale is actually a charming place.

It’s got a gorgeous – if artificial – beach on its eastern haunch, a clutch of leafy neighborhoods, a glass-topped mosque, and planned promenade walkways above the Indian Ocean.

3. Maafushi

Maafushi

Maafushi might not have the sprawling luxury resorts and opulent 5-star hotels that many of its nearby brothers do, but it’s got plenty of charm.

Sadly ravaged in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the place has been busy rebuilding its salt-washed fishing jetties and industrious sailor huts in the last decade.

Something that’s helped is the opening up of rights to local guesthouses, which is transforming Maafushi into one of the top off-beat island getaways for budget travelers.

Of course, you can expect gorgeous beaches backed with palms, lapping waves, and a clutch of homey little coffee shops on the shore.

Utheemu

Sat on the far northern reaches of the Haa Alif Atoll, itself the northernmost of all the Maldivian island chains, the beautiful site of Utheemu holds a special place in the history of this archipelago nation.

That’s because it was once the home of the revered Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu – the leader who’s credited with driving out Portuguese invaders from the isles in the late 16th century.

Of course, there are the usual sparkling white sands and lapping Indian Ocean waves, but these are punctuated by heritage sites like the Utheemu Ganduvaru, which is the gorgeous timber-built palace where the respected leader grew up.

Feydhoo

Feydhoo’s story is a curious one.

In the 19th century, the people now living between the leafy streets and tight-knit housing blocks here were the inhabitants of nearby Gan island (more on that one later). When the British came in the run up to WWII, Gan was transformed into an airbase, and the locals were shipped out to live on the next island along in the Seenu Atoll.

That was Feydhoo, which is today a pretty picture of lived-in Maldivian life.

Come and stroll the winding walkways and sample seafood curries with the locals – the welcome is always warm.

6. Maradhoo

Maradhoo

Joined at the hip to aforementioned Feydhoo by a seaside causeway that runs just above the coral-fringed shores of the Seenu Atoll, Maradhoo is a major link in the island chain that starts with Gan to the east.

Long and thin, it juts out into the Indian Ocean like a finger fringed with narrow beachfronts and swaying groves of coconut palms.

As in Feydhoo, the locals are laid-back and lovely, and the cuisine is spicy and rich in seafood.

Be sure to take a walk down Link Road and flit between the coffee shops and sandwich vendors that meet between the palm trees there.

7. Veligandu Island

Veligandu Island

Romantic sunsets glow red and yellow over the lapping waters of the Indian Ocean; cocktails clink in the resort’s luxurious bar; sea kayaks bob on the turquoise shoreline, and crystal-clear waves roll in softly from the inland lagoon.

Welcome to uber-beautiful Veligandu Island, which has long been championed as one of the top destinations in the Maldives for couples.

Honeymooners and newly-weds are a common site on this long, thin finger of land on the western edge of the North Ari Atoll, and there are plenty of opulent seaside villas and suites to match.

8. Banana Reef

Banana Reef

Many travelers heading to the islands of the Maldives will be coming for one thing and one thing only: diving.

And there’s hardly a single better place to don the SCUBA gear and wetsuits in the country than at the Banana Reef.

This fruit-shaped dash of multi-colored corals and seaweed-clad sandbanks lies underwater between the isles of the North Male Atoll.

It’s served by countless outfitters, who lead excursions to uncover the striped snappers and bulbous sponges, the reef sharks and the barracudas that all coalesce here.

9. Thulusdhoo Island

Thulusdhoo Island

It’s the spirit of the salt-washed Caribbean that seems to drive Thulusdhoo Island.

Largely undiscovered, this speck in the Male Atolls is ringed by wide spaces of sand from which bulbous coconut trunks sprout by the hundred.

The beaches are – naturally – great, and the locals love to draw in their fading fishing boats to flint up a good sizzling seafood barbeque now and then.

That all fits perfectly with the other pastime of travelers on Thulusdhoo: surfing.

Look for the fun left-hand rollers that turn into barrels off of Villingilimathi Huraa close by.

10. Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah promises something a little different to the rest of the Maldivian atolls.

For starters, this speck on the map of the Indian Ocean doesn’t really have any near neighbors, and it occupies an atoll all of its own.

It’s also peppered with the occasional inland lake, which is a rare sight to see in this flat-lying country.

Meanwhile the sandbanks that ring popular Banging Beach make for some crashing rollers and refreshing salt-spray (a break from the usual relaxing lapping lagoons), and the proximity to the Earth’s equator means steamy weather throughout the year.

11. Alimatha Island

Alimatha Island

Perched on the eastern edge of the Maldives, in the famous Felidhe Atoll, Alimatha is a great tourist island that offers luxury cabanas, untouched stretches of pristine sandy beach, and – most importantly – some of the most celebrated SCUBA diving spots around.

The resort that covers the island can often be seen packed with eager divers, who all come to seek out the pretty coral groves and sea walls that surround the shores.

These are packed with jackfish, morays and eels, and are known for their high visibility and popular night diving packages.

12. Hithadhoo

Hithadhoo

Large (at least for a Maldivian island) and highly-populated (again, at least for a Maldivian island), this sub-section of Addu City in the old Seenu Atoll can be reached on the same causeways that connect Gan to Maradhoo.

On its southern edge, the place is given away to mangroves and marshes and shrub land, while the north side of the island is packed with cafes and bakeries and the occasional set of looming minarets that rise from the local mosques.

More than anything, Hithadhoo oozes a charming lived-in vibe; one that’s difficult to discover elsewhere in the resort-heavy country.

Kuredu

Kuredu is the self-proclaimed jewel of the Lhaviyani Atoll, which makes its home in the central-north reaches of the Maldivian archipelago.

A boomerang-shaped isle, it’s entirely covered by a single resort, which offers rustic bamboo shacks and rows of those ubiquitous over-water bungalows with verandahs above the waves.

The whole place is completely surrounded by its own private fringing of powdery sand, and is considered one of the most advanced SCUBA and snorkeling destinations in the country – strong currents and high waves often make it difficult to see the manta rays and tropical schools.

Unusually, Kuredu also plays host to a full 9-hole golf course.

Gan

Gan is primarily known for its airport, which is the second-largest airport in the entire Maldives and a famous former airbase for the British Royal Air Force during WWII. Today, the island has shed its old military importance in favor of tourism, and it’s slowly rising to become one of the most popular spots in the Addu Atoll.

It’s not just the accessibility (thanks to the airport) that draws the crowds either, because Gan has earthy little fishing restaurants and small stretches of shimmering sand that are usually totally empty of visitors. Nice.

15. Kunfunadhoo Island

Kunfunadhoo Island

If you’re after the fabled luxury and romance of the Maldives, then it’s likely that the opulent resort on Kunfunadhoo Island won’t disappoint – it’s continually hailed as the most indulgent place to stay in the country.

Visitors enter through a thatched timber great hall that hides between groves of coconut palms.

From there, it’s onto the cocktail decks that soar on stilts above the jungle, or out to the beaches where candles flicker in the sultry sea breeze.

Add in a couple of infinity pools, swim-up bars, and the chance to dine on a private little sandbank with only the Indian Ocean waves as a backing track, and it’s easy to see why this one’s so popular!

11 Epic Things to Do in the Maldives

Many vacationers head to the Maldives solely to relax on the beach – and for good reason. The sugar white sand and striking turquoise water – practically unmatched in its clarity anywhere in the Caribbean – make for the perfect beach vacation backdrop. Every resort island has at least one beach with lounge chairs or salas to relax on. Most also have a "house reef" where you can cool off and admire the marine life.

Some resorts that boast notably beautiful beaches include:

With exceptionally clear visibility of up to 131 feet, an average sea temperature of 85.5 degrees Fahrenheit, bucket-list opportunities to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, and an abundance of marine life, the Maldives makes for a great environment for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Many resorts feature a house reef (a coral reef easily accessible from shore), while most also offer snorkeling excursions where a boat and tour operator transport you to even more vibrant reefs around the atoll. Most resorts and many inhabited islands have a dive center, so beginner and seasoned scuba divers alike can enjoy dive trips to the most stunning "giris" (shallow submerged reefs), drop-offs, "thilas" (pinnacles), channels, caves and shipwrecks around the area. With typically a medium to strong current, most dives in the Maldives are drift dives from boats.

Try must-do water sports Try must-do water sports

Your trip to the Maldives would be incomplete if you didn't explore the glassy waters of the Indian Ocean or stick your head beneath the surface to check out the colorful world below. After all, the official territory of the Maldives is 99% water and 1% land, so if you only explore the islands, you're barely scratching the surface.

Snorkeling and diving are the top two activities in the Maldives, with wreck dives, pinnacles, reef walls and channel dives being just some of the options on offer. Swim with dozens of nurse sharks in Fulidhoo, whale sharks at Maamigili and tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah, or check out some of the incredible shipwrecks, such as Kuda Giri. You'll never get bored if you embrace the plethora of water sports available in the Maldives.

Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay

U.S. News Insider Tip: If seeing mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay is on your bucket list, choose a resort in Baa Atoll, such as Anantara Kihavah and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. You'll avoid a lengthy journey and expensive private charter fees. – Sarah Harvey

Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was created in recognition of the incredible biodiversity of the underwater ecosystem, and Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in this atoll's crown. Hanifaru is a monitored snorkeling site that's renowned for attracting exceptionally high numbers of manta rays. During the southwestern monsoon (May to November), huge quantities of zooplankton become trapped in the horseshoe-shaped bay, creating a kind of zooplankton "soup," which in turn attracts remarkable numbers of zooplankton-loving "megafauna." In peak season, there could be as many as 100 mantas, plus maybe even several whale sharks feeding there. Hanifaru is one of the only places in the world where so many mantas and whale sharks aggregate in such unusually high numbers.

Authentic cultural experiences Authentic cultural experiences

U.S. News Insider Tip: Many souvenirs are imported from China. Look for souvenirs that are actually made in the Maldives, including thundu kunaa woven mats, striped feyli sarongs, lacquerwork from Baa Atoll and wooden miniature dhonis (boats). Or, check out Authentic Maldives . – Sarah Harvey

Influenced by sailors, traders and other explorers from India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and even further afield over a period of more than 2,500 years, the Maldives is a melting pot of cultures. Prior to the country's official conversion to Islam in A.D. 1153, the Maldives was Buddhist and Hindu. You can see evidence of the Maldives' fascinating past through a number of authentic cultural experiences.

North Malé Atoll North Malé Atoll free

This atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll, is where you'll find the international airport, the capital city, plenty of popular dive sites, several "guesthouse islands" and more than a dozen resorts. A lot of people incorrectly refer to Velana International Airport as "Male airport" (and confusingly, it even has the airport code "MLE"), but it's actually located on an island called Hulhule, which is adjacent to Malé. Most visitors don't ever set foot in Malé, and are instead whisked from Hulhule straight to their resort or guesthouse. However, while most visitors aren't sad to skip Malé, the atoll named after the country's capital city is an extremely popular spot to visit.

Visitors who don't want to hop on another plane after a long journey to the Maldives often pick resorts or guesthouses in North Malé Atoll because they know it's a quick speedboat ride to their accommodation. The closest resorts to the airport, such as Kurumba and Bandos, are only 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. However, the furthest away islands, which could take from 45 minutes to an hour to reach by speedboat, do have the benefit of not being under flight paths and not having the capital city and other urban developments on the horizon, which guests sometimes complain about. What's more, speedboat transfers are also cheaper than seaplane transfers.

Banana Reef Banana Reef

This vibrant site in North Malé Atoll is popular with divers and snorkelers alike. Its name comes from the curved shape of the reef when seen from above. You can admire a wide variety of marine life, including schools of jacks as well as Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracudas, snapper, groupers, reef sharks and, if you're lucky and it's the right season, maybe even mantas too.

Divers who visited the site recently raved about the excellent visibility and abundance of aquatic life, while snorkelers liked how easy it was to see the reef, as the shallowest parts are at only about 4 feet.

Maafushi Maafushi free

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for an island where you can hang out with other travelers, this one is a great option, although those wanting a more idyllic escape might prefer a less built-up island, such as Fulidhoo or Dhigurah. – Sarah Harvey

Maafushi is the most developed inhabited island in the Maldives when it comes to guesthouse tourism. When guesthouses were first legalized, it was on Maafushi that the first one opened in 2010. Prior to that, it was difficult for visitors to mingle with the average Maldivian and get a sense of what island life was like in the "real" Maldives. Today, Maafushi is home to dozens of guesthouses ranging in size and budget, from simple lodgings to stylish hotels. There are also plenty of cafes, watersports centers and dive centers to keep you entertained.

Hulhumalé Hulhumalé free

Hulhumalé is an entirely artificial island built over a shallow lagoon adjacent to Malé. Construction began in 1997, and the rapidly expanding island is currently well on its way to doubling in size from the original 1.5-square-mile plot. The main purpose of creating Hulhumalé was to provide more housing for the overflowing capital city, and it remains a largely residential island. However, Hulhumalé also attracts travelers thanks to its dozens of guesthouses (which mostly line the long sandy beach), as well as several watersports centers and dive centers, a skate park and its very own Central Park. You will also find a variety of cafes and restaurants, ranging from Maldivian cuisine at The Maldive Kitchen to international options like Korean Food Zone.

The main reason visitors choose to stay in Hulhumalé is because it's close to the airport. If they arrive to the Maldives at night, it means they can't hop on a seaplane (which only operate during day), so Hulhumalé is a handy pit stop for many. While it's quieter and greener than Malé, it is becoming busier every year, and some parts of it are beginning to look in need of repair. However, the beach strip, which most tourists stick to, is fairly well looked after. The second phase of this land reclamation project is newer, and the buildings and streets are in better condition there. It is separated from the rest of the island by a series of bridges over a small channel of water.

maldives places to visit

Huraa Island Huraa Island free

Huraa is a relaxing, friendly and uncrowded island village best known to tourists for guesthouses, snorkeling and surfing opportunities. There are several surf points in the vicinity, but surfing in the Maldives is best suited to intermediate to advanced-level surfers because all of the breaks are coral breaks. There are souvenir shops, cafes, small grocery shops, two dive centers and a football field, but the white sand beaches fringing the island are probably the biggest draw, along with the unique insights you'll get into how Maldivians really live. Guesthouses on the island can also organize day trips and activities, such as sandbank trips and fishing excursions.

Past travelers love the fact that there are only electric vehicles on the island, but say it's still being developed for tourism. Some were disappointed to find that there is no "bikini beach" anymore (a tourist beach where you can wear a bikini, as it's illegal to wear skimpy swimwear on any island that isn't a resort island). However, many said the island was beautiful and they enjoyed exploring the mangrove area too.

Maldives Victory Maldives Victory

The Maldives Victory, a 262-foot-long cargo ship, sunk in 1981 after hitting a reef in North Malé Atoll . Now, the dive site attracts scuba aficionados thanks to the beautiful corals that have covered it, as well as the rich sea life that has made the wreck a sight to behold, including turtles, trevallies, grouper, batfish, pufferfish and lionfish. For macrolife-lovers, there are also nudibranchs on the stern.

The Maldives Victory rests upright off the coast of Hulhule Island, not too far from the southern end of the Velana International Airport runway. Experts say this site is best seen between late May and July. Recent reviewers recommended a penetration dive so you don't miss the marine life inside the wreck and touted it as one of the most thrilling dive sites in the country.

Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide

maldives places to visit

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

  • Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
  • Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
  • Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .

The Maldives’ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the world’s first and only underwater spa.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

  • One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
  • The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
  • Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

  • May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
  • Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

Surrounded by lush green vegetation of ferns and reeds, Dhadimagi Kilhi is the most visited lake for swimming because of the calm water. Time Required : 1-2 hours

Maldives glowing beach.

Maldives Glowing Beach

The Maldives Glowing Beach is situated at the Mudhdhoo Island, also known as the Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll. Beach is one of the most visited tourist destinations in these islands, mostly known for its phenomenal fluorescent, glowing waves. This natural phenomenon occurs due to the presence of millions of marine microbes known as phytoplankton in the water.

This phytoplankton is bioluminescent and as the skies get darker after sunset, these microscopic planktons emit a bright vibrant blue light in the water which creates an ethereal effect. This phenomenon makes the waves glow as they gently splash over the beach and is the ideal place to spend your time after sundown in the Maldives. The best time to visit the Glowing Beach is between June and October when the sea remains comparatively warmer due to the summer season. The warm, tropical, coastal weather is the perfect condition for the planktons to thrive and glow brightly.

There are other exciting recreational activities like scuba diving and snorkelling that take place on this beach, during which you can interact closely with the rich and colourful marine life that thrives on this beach and in the water. The beach is also ideal for picnics, events, romantic walks and dinners, water sports and other activities that make your trip to the beach exceptional and memorable.

Vaadhoo Island is a beautiful island in the Maldives which offers beautiful beaches, iconic landscapes and mesmerising beauty. When the sun goes down at Vaadhoo Island, the sea waves lapping the shore light up like a shimmering field of blue dots giving the sea the appearance of the starlit night sky. This incredible phenomenon occurs during the late summer months due to the growth of phytoplankton, or aquatic creatures that glow in the dark. You can stir up the water, and if the plankton is present, it will splash around the gorgeous blue light, creating a mesmerizing sight. However, your chances of seeing this increase when you cruise offshore. The waves break against the boat and make the tiny organisms radiate light. The clean water around Vaadhoo offers high visibility. And the rich marine life and colourful corals around the island make it a hotspot for adventurous water sports. Indulge in snorkelling and diving while swimming and kayaking are also popular activities here. Several cosy accommodations are available on the island, catering to every budget. You can also choose to stay at a luxury resort nearby and explore Vaadhoo on a day trip. The tropical climate, balmy sea breeze, and moderate temperature make the island a year-round holiday destination for honeymooners and families alike.Planning a trip to Maldives Checkout Maldives Tour Package,

How to Plan the Perfect Maldives Vacation at the Best Hotels

Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect Maldives vacation.

maldives places to visit

The world's lowest-lying nation rises barely three feet above sea level (at its highest point, a mere 10 feet) and fans over the Indian Ocean in wide, flat circles of blindingly white sand. The Maldives are nestled halfway between Indonesia and Africa and attract travelers seriously committed to communing with the sparkling turquoise tides.

Made up of 26 atolls spanning 1,190 different islands (of these, less than a third are inhabited), the Maldives are like one giant jigsaw puzzle of sandbars and lagoons. An impressive number of marine species have made their homes in the surrounding reefs and, as a result, a Maldives vacation is particularly popular among scuba divers.

The Maldives are where people come to experience island life at its most relaxed — and most beautiful. Whether you're criss-crossing coral reefs in a glass-bottomed boat or dozing off in your private overwater bungalow, the chances of returning home disappointed are slim to none. Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect Maldives vacation.

How to Get Around on Your Maldives Vacation

Within each of the island chain's ring-shaped atolls — North Ari Atoll, South Ari Atoll, Laamu Atoll, and so on — is a group of different islands typically anchored by a small airport. The Kaafu Atoll is home to Velana International Airport, which is the main entry point for all travelers. This main airport, near the capital island of Malé, is where you'll likely start your Maldives vacation. From here, you'll need to arrange a separate flight or speedboat transfer to get to your individual hotel — and if you're resort hopping, you may need to take more than one seaplane or boat to get around the Maldives. Often the luxury hotels can help you organize a seaplane or boat transport to your final destination. You can also hire your own speedboat transfer through companies like Atoll Transfer or take a public ferry between islands.

When to Plan Your Maldives Vacation

December through April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit the Maldives. This can make hotels slightly more expensive, but it's also when you can enjoy a near-guaranteed streak of gorgeous, storm-free days. Moreover, dry season makes for better visibility (think: crystal-clear snorkeling and underwater diving). No matter what time of year, travelers can expect balmy temperatures in the mid-80s.

How to Visit Multiple Islands in the Maldives

The Maldives are full of dreamy, relatively untouched islands, and one of the joys of vacationing here is venturing beyond your hotel. A typical excursion might include fishing at sunset in a 60-foot dhoni (a traditional Maldivian wooden boat). Another favorite is island hopping, when resort guests are taken to a handful of nearby islands and properties to snorkel and explore on land (a packed or barbecue lunch is almost always included). Some hotels even offer intimate escapes for couples. Just imagine being taken out to a deserted beach in a dinghy, where you're left to enjoy the company of your significant other for the entire afternoon, equipped with only a fully stocked picnic basket and a mobile phone in case of emergencies.

Best Hotels in the Maldives

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands was perhaps the biggest news coming out of the Maldives in 2021. This icon-in-the-making hotel debuted in May 2021, and it's the inaugural Patina Hotels & Resorts property (a new brand by Capella Hotel Group). The 90 one- to three-bedroom beach and pool villas feature exquisite architectural elements. Guests will love spending time at the Fari Marina Village and Fari Beach Club, all of which are part of the Patina experience.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi launched a new private island at the beginning of 2021 that's available only for exclusive rental. Not only that, but the iconic luxury property debuted new villas and the country's first Aqua Wellness Center for travelers who want to maintain their healthy lifestyle while enjoying the natural beauty of the Maldives.

Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives debuted in June 2021 in the North Malé Atoll. Located near Chickens Break, a must-visit surfing spot, it's the perfect hotel for travelers looking to take advantage of water sports on their Maldives vacation. The property also boasts a spa overlooking the beach and a Singaporean-style street food market.

Another great stay in the Maldives is Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa — a luxe experience by Marriott. In the Lhaviyani Atoll, this resort is all about beachfront cafes, lagoon-access overwater villas, and an embrace of midcentury Maldivian design.

Must-try Activities in the Maldives

Scuba diving in the Maldives is second to none — the nutrient-rich waters, fed by currents from the Indian Ocean, are like a Whole Foods for marine life. Brightly colored tropical fish, manta rays, reef sharks, whale sharks, eels, sea turtles, and more are attracted to the waters of the Maldives. Start at the South Ari Atoll, where you'll find popular dive sites like Broken Rock (split in half by a deep canyon) and Kudarah Thila.

In 2005, Ithaa became the world's first all-glass, undersea restaurant. Though the trend has spread, travelers can still enjoy a seafood feast at the intimate, 14-seat restaurant. Everything on the menu is sustainably caught. To eat here, however, you'll need to plan ahead: Reservations are required well in advance, and guests of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island , where the restaurant is located, get first dibs.

Dolphin watching in the Maldives is also fairly popular, though it of course requires patience. One of the best spots to see the gorgeous creatures is Muli Channel. Work with your hotel or a local dive center to snorkel these waters on a clear day, when you'll have the best chance of seeing a dolphin.

15 of The Best Things to do in Maldives

Written By: The Planet D

maldives places to visit

Looking for things to do in Maldives? You’ve come to the right place. Visiting the Maldives will transport you to paradise. With luxury bungalows extending over turquoise waters reaching out from the white sand beaches, the Maldives is a dream destination.

I must admit, we expected to do nothing more than bask in the sun, sip cocktails, and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean, but once we arrived at our little island oasis, we found out that there are more things to do in the Maldives than we originally thought.

Table of Contents

Top Things to do in Maldives

It’s true, over the water bungalows are a spectacular sight and those images are what drew us to the Maldives in the first place. But are there things to do in Maldives besides relaxing? Definitely!

The Maldives are made for adventure, water sports, and romance. We stayed at two private islands in the Maldives but we managed to do several day trips to explore the surrounding atolls and the capital city of Male. These are the best things to do in the Maldives for everyone!

1. Scuba Diving

things to do in the Maldives scuba diving

The Maldives is one of the premier scuba diving destinations on earth and if there is one place you need to give it a try, it’s here. There are many affordable PADI dive centers where you can take a discovery dive if you are not certified, or sign up for several dive options to one of the many reefs.

There are many dive sites in the Maldives with Baa Atoll being one of the largest groups of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. It is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve making it one of the best places to dive in the Maldives. It’s known for its manta rays and whale sharks.

The Maldives has an abundance of marine life for its manta rays and stingrays, whale shark migration, reef sharks and sea turtles. The crystal clear blue waters offer incredible visibility and there’s no need for a wetsuit here, the water’s warm and inviting. This was definitely one of our favorite things to do in Maldives.

2. Snorkeling Trips

things to do in maldives diving and snorkeling

If diving isn’t your thing, snorkeling is a great option. The reefs are so pristine in the Maldives that you don’t have to go deep to see a lot! We went snorkeling with sea turtles and saw more than half a dozen munching their lunches at the reef.

Spending a solid two hours in the water, we also managed to see so much more marine life than just sea turtles. Snorkeling is truly one of the best things to do in the Maldives.

My favourite moment was being surrounded by immense schools of colourful fish flocking together as they floated with the tides. When three masses came together, we felt as if we were in our own giant aquarium.

  • 3 Point Snorkelling Safari – a snorkeling trip to three different snorkeling locations.
  • Submarine Tour from Male – Don’t want to get in the water? See the underwater world of the Indian Ocean while staying dry from a submarine.

3. Dolphin Watching

things to do in the Maldives - dolphin watching

When we arrived at Cinnamon Hakurra , we asked our greeter what she thinks is one of the best things to do in the Maldives is. “ Hands down, The Dolphin excursio n” She said. So we decided to do it.

Just before sunset, we set out in search of pods of dolphins. It didn’t take long for our captain to spot one. We’ve seen a few dolphins in the wild, and we must say, the dolphins in the Maldives are some of the most active and playful we have ever seen!

We were also very pleased to see that the captain of our boat didn’t get too close to the dolphins or chase them too much. He kept a safe distance letting the dolphins swim off should they choose to do so.

4. Island Hopping

things to do in Maldives go island hopping

Believe it or not, there is a large settlement in the Maldives and many locals live and work on the islands. If you stay on a private island in the Maldives, make sure to book an excursion to visit the nearby local islands and communities. This was a great day trip around the islands. Excursions can be booked directly from your hotel, or you can book in advance at Get Your Guide.

The Maldives people follow a strict Muslim culture so be sure to dress respectably in long skirts/shorts and no spaghetti strap sleeves. I wore shorts but just brought a sarong with me to put on when we landed on the islands. Bring some cash with you so you can buy local crafts and jewelry as well.

Remember that because Maldives is Islamic, you most won’t be able to purchase alcoholic beverages off the resort. Tourism is a huge source of revenue for the Maldives so they allow guests to consume alcohol

5. Meet the Locals

things to do in the Maldives meet the people

We visited two local islands in Maldives – Mule, Island – the capital of Johnson Atoll. And Naalaafushee Island, a fishing village where we visited the fish market.

Walking through the concrete buildings, we were surprised that there was a proper downtown and square on both tiny islands with schools, community centers, and banks. These islands are probably the smallest inhabited islands we’ve ever seen, but there’s a lot going on there.

6. Surfing in the Maldives

things to do in the Maldives surfing

The Maldives is a world-class surfing destination . The Cinnamon Dhonveli Hotel attracts top surfers from around the world to face its awesome break free from crowds. For adrenaline junkies surfing is, definitely one of the best things to do in Maldives.

The surfing was beyond our very amateur skill level, but each morning we loved watching the pros head out to face the pipe as we sipped our morning coffee.

This break is considered one of the best on earth and Dhonveli is even a stop on the pro circuit. If you aren’t a pro, don’t worry, there are other islands in the Maldives where you can take some surfing lessons.

  • See how we fared surfing in Sri Lanka

7. Stand Up Paddle Boarding

things to do in the Maldives paddle boarding sup

If you aren’t into surfing, paddleboarding is another great option. You can paddle in safe bays with water so clear you can see fish swimming right below your boards.

The Maldives is great for (SUPping) because most islands are surrounded by calm shallow waters that only ebb and flow with the rising tides. Both resorts rent paddleboards.

8. Visit the Spa

things to do in the Maldives massage

The Maldives was made for romance and when visiting the island paradise, you must take some time to pamper yourself. Most people visiting the Maldives were couples and families and we highly recommend a couple’s massage for upping the romance factor.

As soothing music plays, skilled masseurs rub away the aches and pains from your long flight or day out in the sun. After an hour and a half of luxury, make sure you have nothing else on your to-do list for the day, as you’ll want to relish in relaxation.

9. Sunset Romantic Dinner

dining on the beach in the maldives things to do

I don’t think there is a more romantic destination on earth than the Maldives. If you are traveling as a couple and want to splurge on a romantic night out, this is the place to do it. While most food is buffet style in the Maldives, take a break from the smorgasbord and enjoy either a sunset beach or sunset pier dinner.

We found the meal to be a bit pricey at $220 per couple , but it did include a bottle of champagne, a private waiter, and a meal prepared right at your table. However, I think Cinnamon could do a lot better if they just made this option an upgrade from dinner.

10. Scenic Flight over Maldives Islands

best of the maldives

There is something magical about seeing the different shades of water below as you fly over the Maldives. Many resorts require a flight on a twin-engine float plane to get out to them.

If you don’t have the good fortune of staying on a private island that requires a flight out over the Indian Ocean, we highly recommend booking a scenic flight over the many atolls. The islands create a pattern in the sea as the deep ocean crashes into sandbars and coral reefs.

Many islands are surrounded by miles of shallow waters low enough to wade through at low tide. From the air, you get a real sense of just how isolated and beautiful the islands of the Maldives are.

11. Over the Water Bungalows

things to do in the Maldives stay in over the water bungalows

When we started writing this article about the best things to do in the Maldives, we said there is a lot more to it than over the water bungalows and beach villas, but you must take advantage of these beauties and make the most of them while you’ve got them.

With an over the water bungalow, you can jump right into the waters and snorkel or swim. We loved our bungalow so much at Cinnamon Hakuraa we never wanted to leave our room. With a private deck, it’s perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and pure relaxation.

12. White Sand Beaches

best of the Maldives blue waters

The Maldives are known for their white sand beaches that stretch along the atolls. and the sand is smooth and easy to walk on. Beachgoers will love visiting the Maldives as you can walk far out along the sand bars enjoying the crystal clear waters.

What’s even better, is if you stay at an over the water bungalow, you can walk directly from your deck basking in paradise. And that is exactly what the Maldives are. Paradise Islands.

13. Fishing

If you are really into fishing then you will want to try it out here in the Maldives. Tuna is the most popular catch and you can either fish the Maldives way, where you go out spearfishing with a local, or you can go out on a regular fishing expedition.

14. Parasailing

Parasailing in the Maldives

If a scenic flight is not in your budget then another great way to see the beautiful atolls of the Maldives is to go parasailing. There is no better way to appreciate the beauty of the Maldives than from above.

It is an exhilarating feeling to feel the wind in your hair as you soar high above your boat taking in the beautiful scenery all around you. This is definitely one of the coolest things to do in the Maldives.

15. Explore Malé

best things to do in the maldives video

You’ll be flying into the Maldives through Male and it’s worth spending a day or two exploring the capital of the Maldives. Malé is completely different from the tranquility of the atolls.

It is a small island with a population of more than 227,000 it is one of the densely populated cities on earth. Spend a day exploring its top sites like the Male Fish Market and the Old Mosque.

The Male Fish Market is the heartbeat of the city with a hectic energy of the catch of the day coming through. The National Museum is worth a stop to see the history and artifacts from the Maldives past and the Old Friday Mosque is the oldest mosque in the Maldives dating back to 1656. And make sure to visit Sultan Park.

  • To see everything in Male book a guided tour of the city here.

The Best Resorts in the Maldives

The Best Resorts in the Maldives

The Maldives is made up of a series of atolls. There is the North and the South Male Atoll as well as smaller atolls where you will find hotels. There is no shortage of beautiful resorts in the Maldives. These are a few of our favorite places to stay.

If you want to go all out on your budget, I would recommend the Hurawalhi Island Resort. Located on the Lhaviyani Atoll, this luxury resort has everything you need. With beautiful rooms and the world’s largest all-glass undersea restaurant, it is a trip you will remember forever. You can check availability here.

Another option that we loved is the Cinnamon Hakuraa Hura for romance and an isolated escape for high-end luxury. Their platinum island has opened for adults 18 and over.

If you are looking for something a little more mid-range then check out Cinnamon Dhonveli – This resort is located in the North Male Atoll and caters more to families than others with kids club and child friendly inclusions. It is just a short boat ride from the capital of Mali.

The Maldives on a budget? It can be done. There are many different guesthouses in the Maldives and also make sure to look into an apartment rental for the best price on the island. It can be a great way to experience the local flair.

Looking for something different? Splurge on a stay at the Huvafen Spa and Resort. It has the only underwater spa in the world.

Practical tips for planning your trip to Maldives

When it comes to planning a vacation to the Maldives there are a few things you should take into consideration. The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India and Sri Lanka.

The official language of the Maldives is Dhivehi but many people understand English; Especially the resorts. It was under British rule from 1796 to 1965 but it was already a Sultinate being mainly ruled by the Sultans as of 1958.

For a more detailed breakdown visit our Maldives Travel Guide.

When to Visit the Maldives

There is no bad time to visit the Maldives. The weather in the Maldives is warm all year round. The most popular time to visit is November through April as this is the dry season. If you are looking for some deals then I would suggest looking at visiting in June at the beginning of the rainy season.

The best time for Scuba Diving in the Maldives is from January to April.

The Maldives can be reached through direct flights from Sri Lanka, Dubai, and Qatar. We landed at the Velana International Airport. This is the main place to fly into and is roughly 3 miles from the capital city of Malé.

From there, you will most likely take a boat or floatplane to your resort located on one of the many islands. I don’t think anywhere quite compares with the sheer beauty of Maldives and seeing it from a seaplane is extraordinary. While flying in from Male, we saw one paradise after another.

The islands are so small, they have to build bungalows over the water. And the water is so shallow, they can. These islands are sitting on underwater plateaus just waiting for you to come and visit.

Drones are prohibited in many areas and resorts in the Maldives, so make sure to check if you decide to fly a drone.

The Maldives can be traveled independently, pick up your Lonely Planet Travel Guide of the Maldives

According to experts, it is feared that world’s 5 most beautiful islands, including the Maldives, will disappear by the end of the 21st century. Scientists have claimed that these islands will be submerged in water in less than 60 years and this will happen only due to global warming

The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs. The capital, Malé, has a busy fish market, restaurants and shops on the main road, Majeedhee Magu, and 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (also known as Friday Mosque) made of carved white coral.

Hey Dave, hey Deb! The post is stunning and inspiring! I’m planning my trip to Maldives and I’ve got a question about bioluminescent plankton, information of which I found on https://rove.me/to/maldives . And I can’t wait facing it, as an unbelievable something! Is June through October is a fine period to see that wonder of nature? Cause I don’t wanna miss it. The weather I checked on https://www.lonelyplanet.com/maldives/weather promises to be warm. Thanks!

Amazing! Hav e a great time. wE didn’t see the bioluminescent plankton in Maldives, but have seen it in Thailand and other places. I would just check with the resort you are staying at or with the tourism board, people are usually good at getting back to you about those type of things. Have a super time!

any submarine ride?

I recently discovered your site, and I’m loving it. I hope to meet this wonderful place one day, it’s my dream. Congrats to the site.

Maldives is Amazing, Added to my bucket list, I have never seen such beautiful location before, the crystal clear water, water villas etc are tempting me to come there. But where is the shing beach? is that far away from this location?

Those beaches. Wow. Can’t get much better than that.

Hi there,I log on to your blogs named “10 of The Best Things to do in Maldives – The Planet D” on a regular basis.Your story-telling style is awesome, keep it up! And you can look our website about proxy list.

My friend went here for honeymoon and they had a wonderful time. The photos were spectacular. I am planning to go there in August. gonna try scuba diving as well

Another island nation worth visiting. Cannot wait to get there. Looking forward to island hopping.

Maldives is one of the best beautiful and awesome place.

Maldives one of the awesome place. I love dinner at such places.

Maldives is really stunning, 220 for a dinner will unsettle my stomach. Actually i always wondered if its possible to visit Maldives on a budget. Or at least without destroying the bank account. Best regards.

You actually can visit on a budget. The all inclusive resorts are a great deal. This was an extra for the dinner and yes, it was a lot of money. It is definitely recommended for a special occasion, but the buffets are great and included in the deal. Cheers!

I’ve been to Bora Bora, but I would love to go to the Maldives one of these days. It looks incredibly gorgeous! I love snorkeling, especially when there are turtles around, so that sounds like fun. I don’t think I could stomach that pricey dinner though. But this looks like an amazing place for a vacation!

Breathtaking!! I have always had a fascination of the Maldives. This article only reinforced that with all the exciting thing you can do. In particular when you love water sports. I must go one day! Thanks for making me dream a bit more today!

Amazing .. we too are bloggers and our site also has some travel and food blogs which you would like to see. About Maldives… wish to go there some day…nice pictures!!

Thank you very much for sharing such remarkable pictures. We have seen white beaches but I think Maldives beaches have some unusual beauty. I really want to do scuba diving and sea surfing there, hopefully will be there soon. 🙂

Wow, It is my favorite destination. It has been 6 years to go there. I was little scared to do scuba diving so missed it.

Great website. The Maldives is definitely on our bucket list!

One question, what’s the name of the background music playing in your video?

Maldives is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen . There is no other place like it!

Cool place to visit! I would like to enjoy water sports & would like to have spas. I truly enjoyed the post. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful Island! I’ve been to Maldives once or twice and there is no denying it is like Paradise on Earth! I love the scuba diving sessions as well as the relaxing atmosphere of the resort.

It looks so cool. I really can’t wait for my honeymoon now!

Must be amazing chilling out in one of those bungalows in the middle of the water.

My sis and her husband went to Maldives for their honeymoon. It is definitely a destination for couples. But I was wondering if there’s anything to more to discover about Maldives besides water activities and sunsets. Culture or local life?

Yep, we talk about the island tours where we explored the culture in the video and this post! There is a population that lives in the Maldives and you can stay on islands that are not only resorts. If you are only staying at a resort, many offer the chance to visit neighouring islands to meet the locals like we did. You can also stay in the capital Male when you land at the airport before heading out to the islands. cheers!

outstation pictures and video also awesome ..!! actually i’m planning to visit Maldives this year. i’m so glad read your blog it’s really very helpful information for traveler. thank you so much for sharing this post with us.

10 Best Places to Visit in the Maldives

A couple enjoying their time at a tropical beach, one of the best places to visit in the Maldives.

  • ~ mins read

The Maldives is likely to bring to mind pristine beaches, luxurious overwater villas, extensive reefs, colorful sea creatures, and turquoise waters as the eyes can see. But that’s not all; step out of your all-inclusive resort stay and you’ll find plenty of fascinating places to see on a tour to the Maldives . From the cultural capital Male to the glowing beaches of Vadhoo Island, listed below are our picks for the 10 best places to visit in the Maldives.

1. Vaadhoo Island

Pier into the ocean after sunset on a cloudy day in Raa Atoll, one of the best places to visit in the Maldives.

Vaadhoo Island is a small, inhabited island in Raa Atoll of the Maldivian archipelago. It’s known for its pristine beaches, clean roads, and occasionally bioluminescent waters. The “sea of stars” natural phenomenon occurs when phytoplanktons are agitated with crashing waves and emit a vibrant blue light. Considered to be one of the best places to visit in the Maldives for couples;walking along the shores with your partner as the beach glows is romance gifted by nature itself.

Highlights:

  • Kayaking is a popular activity in the Maldives, and what better place than nearby a bioluminescent beach? Brave the waters when the sun is setting and enjoy this breathtaking natural phenomenon.
  • Enjoy a tranquil stroll along the shorelines of Dhekunu Thundi beach, known for its clear blue waters and postcard-worthy setting.

Good to know: Visit the island during the new moon phase between June to September to increase your chances of seeing the bioluminescence phenomenon in its full glory.

2. Addu Atoll

Aerial view of the beach at Addu city in the Maldives.

The southernmost atoll of the Maldives, the Addu Atoll comprises picturesque islands like Gan, Maradhoo, Feydhoo and Meedhoo, all connected by freeways and bridges for easy travel. Densely populated, here you will have a chance to interact with locals and see authentic Maldivian life up close.

  • Beachcomb in the rugged landscape and collect some souvenirs.
  • Sample local cuisine like addu havaadhu and addu bendi when the town comes to life during the evening.
  • Scuba dive or snorkel to see manta rays, hammerheads, turtles, and vibrant reefs. Kottey Corner, Demon Point, and Turtle Point have massive coral formations with diverse sea creatures to spot!

Good to know: The Maldives is an Islamic nation and longer dresses and covered shoulders are more accepting in local areas. On private island resorts, you can wear whatever you want.

3. Sultan Park

The medieval coral stone Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy in Sultan Park in the Maldives

Sultan Park is a gorgeous public park in Male, Maldives. Also known as the “Rasrani Bageecha”, the lush green gardens were built on the site of a demolished 16th-century Royal Palace and are close to two other popular attractions: the National History Museum and the Islamic Centre.

  • Travel back in time to the National History Museum located in another wing of the park.
  • Stroll the park and plan a picnic in the lush surroundings and quiet space of this tourist attraction.

Good to know: Explore the National Museum in the afternoon to beat the heat and wander around the park in the evening for a cool, comfortable atmosphere.

4. Artificial Beach

Artificial beach in Male, one of the best places to visit in the Maldives.

The only man-made beach in the Maldives, the Artificial Beach is known for its striking beauty, pleasant climate, and proximity to the capital’s best eateries lined around the area. With a plethora of activities, from adventure sports to sunbathing and treating your taste buds, it’s the best place in Maldives for family time!

  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and watch the sun setting over the horizon from the Sinamele Bridge.
  • Immerse in the cultural events, live music, and local food market along the shores. Several are organized in and around popular eateries like Newport Restaurant, Seagull Cafe House, and Oxygen Cafe, to name a few!

Good to know: For a quieter experience, avoid visiting on Fridays & Saturdays (the weekend in the Maldives) unless you like a big local crowd.

5. Underwater Restaurant

A woman in an underwater restaurant, one of the best places to visit in the Maldives.

Dining in an underwater restaurant is one of the best experiences in the Maldives. Built a few feet beneath the ocean, these restaurants offer stunning views of marine life through glass and offer an expansive array of cuisine and beverages. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at Conrad Rangali, 5.8 at Hurawalhi Island Resort, and Minus Six Metres at Ozen by Atmosphere are some of the best-rated in the country.

  • Watch the vibrant sea creatures around you as you enjoy a world-class dining experience.

Good to know: Stay at a resort that has an underwater restaurant to save the expensive travel between islands.

6. Grand Friday Mosque

Grand Friday Mosque is a top tourist attraction in the Maldives. It’s the largest mosque in the Maldives and showcases a distinct level of architecture. Steeped in history and standing tall with its opulent grandeur, it’s a must-visit site to see in the Maldives.

  • Cover nearby attractions like the produce market, Rasrani Bageecha, and the National Art Gallery after touring the Grand Friday Mosque
  • Admire the interiors and time your visit during a prayer for a deep spiritual connection.

Good to know: Avoid visiting the attraction on Fridays, which is the holy day for Muslims. The place will likely see more locals than other days of the week.

7. Male City

Aerial view of Male city in the Maldives.

Capital city Male boasts the charm of island life combined with a lively city vibe, historic architecture, azure seas, and a booming food scene. As Male is one of the best islands to visit in the Maldives, you’ll have a versatile choice of activities like lazing around by the beach, exploring the popular buildings like the National Museum, or tour around the streets bustling with local markets.

  • Discover the country’s history at the National Museum and Sultan Park.
  • Shop and collect souvenirs at Male’s two major shopping lanes: Majedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu.
  • Visit the quiet and charming island of Villingili (Villimale), a 15-minute ferry ride away from Male.

8. Hanifaru Bay

Manta Rays swimming among the corals in Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives.

Hanifaru Bay is located in the Baa Atoll in the Maldives and is a declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It’s one of the few and the best places in the world where visitors can swim up close to Manta rays and other sea creatures like whale sharks, marine turtles and more.

  • Snorkel with the manta rays for a surreal glimpse of sea life.
  • Spend time on Dharavandhoo Island, nearest to Hanifaru Bay, popular for its unspoiled beaches and friendly locals.

Good to know:  Plan your trip between May to December when manta rays aggregate in huge numbers to gorge themselves on plankton-rich waters.

9. Maafushi Island

Gulhi island near Maafushi on Kaafu Atoll in the Maldives.

One of the biggest, most popular, and easily-reachable islands of the Maldives is Maafushi. With spectacular beaches, colorful reefs, affordable resorts, and historic attractions, it’s one of the best places to visit in the Maldives.

  • Snorkel and witness marine life through crystal-clear waters.
  • Dine at the local eateries and treat yourself to delectable regional dishes like garudhiya (fish soup), kulhi boakibaa (spicy fish cake), masroshi (tuna-stuffed chapati), etc.
  • Book a catamaran ride and witness majestic scenery as you sail through the Indian Ocean.

Good to know: Public ferries operate multiple times a day to Maafushi Island (except Fridays) and cost only USD 3 per person, as opposed to a private speedboat which can cost as much as USD 30 to 50 per person.

10. Banana Reef

Banana Reef is a protected marine park and the first dive site in the Maldives, making it one of the best places to go in the Maldives. It’s called “Banana” because of the form seen from above and is well-known for a rich marine ecosystem including the likes of reef sharks, barracuda, yellowtail snapper, humpback red snappers, moray eels, and more.

  • Dive into the depths of the ocean and head over to the reef’s steep walls covered in colorful florals and sponges. The scenery is remarkable and teeming with underwater species like elusive silverfish, orange soldier fishes, and yellow-striped Oriental sweetlips.
  • Snorkel and see the fish whizzing out of the turquoise waters.
  • Take an aerial tour to witness the magnificent island from atop.

Good to know:  Schedule a trip to Banana Reef when you arrive or leave the Maldives. The reef is around 30 minutes away from Male and many diving centers offer 3 to 4-hour trips to the location, including travel, activities and a meal for the visitors.

From witnessing the exotic marine life in Maldives’ shallow waters to lounging around on the world’s best beaches and dining at surreal underwater restaurants, the best places to visit in the Maldives are ideal for all vacationers.

How to choose the best Maldives island for your travel style

Maldives, Island on sunny day

There are thousands of sun-drenched islands in the Maldives, and finding the right one is all part of the fun ©seanscott/Getty Images

Let’s get one thing straight: Not all atolls were created equal. But on the plus side, the  Maldives  has thousands of sun-drenched islands, and discovering the perfect one for your trip is all part of the fun.

Every resort in Maldives is its own private island but choosing the right one for you can be difficult. Want to kick off your Indian Ocean holiday in style? Our guide will help you know what to look for in the hunt for your ideal island, whether you’re searching for affordable options or five-star resorts with brilliant dive schools.

Standup paddleboarder in the turquoise waters off the shore of the Patina Maldives resort

The distance dilemma

Yes, your sun-kissed island resort might be wonderfully secluded with no other atoll in sight, but remote locations inevitably crank up the price – not simply because there are higher costs to cover (like getting supplies to the resort in question) but because it’s likely you’ll need to pay for a short domestic flight or a seaplane flight to get there. Seaplane transfers are the most expensive option (expect to pay anywhere from US$300 to US$900 for a round trip), while domestic flights to one of the Maldives’ smaller airports (followed by a boat transfer) will be slightly cheaper.

The good news? Some of the best Maldives resorts are just a boat ride from Male’s Velana International Airport, so don’t write off properties simply because of their close proximity.

We recommend: Patina Maldives, the Fari Islands

Located on the Fari Islands development, Patina Maldives, the Fari Islands is only a 45-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport. Fancy a spot of island-hopping? Traveling between islands in the Maldives can be expensive, but Patina Maldives is just a short shuttle-boat service from the Fari Islands’ Ritz-Carlton resort, so there’s no chance of claustrophobia setting in. The Capella Maldives , which will be the third and final Fari Islands resort, is due to open in 2025.

Where to stay for the best food

It may sound self-indulgent, but trust us – knowing your culinary criteria can make or break a holiday. That tiny, exclusive island you’ve got your eye on might well have a Michelin-starred chef, but even the most delicious dishes can look rather plain after you’ve eaten your way through the restaurant’s menu in the space of two days. In summary, bigger is often better if food is a priority. Our top tip? Don’t miss Maldivian Night – most resorts will offer these culinary extravaganzas, typically held in the main buffet restaurant. Chefs will go all out to champion local cuisine, and they’re great opportunities to try local seafood like the Maldivian snapper.

We recommend: Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

You’ll never go hungry at the South Male Atoll’s Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi resort, which has a staggering 11 restaurants, including ones specializing in Levantine and garden-to-table cuisine. There are regular food-themed events, too – our favorites include Arabian Night and the Twilight Seafood Barbecue, held on the beach.

Where to go for downtime

Why are you going on holiday to the Maldives? If you’re dreaming of lazy sunbathing sessions on the country’s best beaches, your priorities will be different than those of the adrenaline-fueled traveler keen to try every high-octane activity available, whether it’s swimming with manta rays or skydiving (as of 2023, the Maldives now has a skydiving school, which you’ll find on Ifuru Island ). As a rule, smaller resorts are great for crowd-free downtime, while larger ones are best suited to families and active types.

We recommend: Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu

For the best of both worlds, consider Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu  on Baa Atoll – regarded as one of the best spots in the Maldives . There’s a wide range of activities and experiences on offer, but where you can also escape your fellow vacationers by signing up for a night on a nearby deserted island.

A couple on a dock watching a colorful sunset at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

Money talks

It’s a myth that you have to be a millionaire to holiday in the Maldives, although without a little research, costs can easily spiral out of control. Travelers keen to make the most of their hard-earned cash should familiarize themselves with the packages on offer to make sure they’re getting the best value for money. Options can range from bed-and-breakfast-only packages to to ones that include all meals and drinks, along with certain activities.

We recommend: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

A private island in North Male Atoll considered one of the best spots in the Maldives for honeymoons, the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa  has a huge range of room categories and offers a brilliant selection of packages, including Island Romance packages that feature fantastic extras designed with couples in mind. Planning on tying the knot? You can get married here, too.

And if you have more questions about budget-planning for a Maldives adventure, take a look at our top 8 ways to save money in the Maldives .

What to look for in sustainability

Taking a second to consider your destination’s sustainability credentials won’t just benefit Mother Nature, it could also save you serious amounts of cash. If an island is producing its own drinking water, growing its own vegetables and transporting guests by boat rather than gas-guzzling seaplane, there will be lower outgoings, which means less costs to cover – all of which translates into lower room rates.

We recommend: Fairmont Maldives - Sirru Fen Fushi

There are numerous reasons to visit the Shaviyani Atoll’s Fairmont Maldives - Sirru Fen Fushi resort, including the fact that it’s tucked inside one of the Maldives’ largest lagoons. But it’s also a great place to learn about sustainability, whether it’s at the Sustainability Lab, where guests can turn discarded plastic bottles into jewelry (waste plastic has also been transformed into various pieces of furniture you’ll see throughout the resort) or during excursions with marine biologists from the Olive Ridley Project , a charity created to protect sea turtles that has a partnership with the property. There’s also the fantastic Coralarium, a semi-submerged structure just off the beach designed by British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor, who specializes in underwater installations. It doubles as a coral propagation project, and guests can snorkel inside it to admire the tropical fish and brightly-colored corals.

Where to get a culture fix

A growing number of resorts are honoring the region by offering experiences that provide a deeper insight into the Maldives and prove that there are endless reasons to venture beyond your villa. Many now offer trips to local community islands, for example, and in recent years several have opened small museums. At Cora Cora resort’s Dutch Onion Museum (named after the onion-shaped vessels found on the island, several of which are on display), visitors can check out over 400 ancient artifacts found on nearby islands.

We recommend: Heritance Aarah

Heritance Aarah , a beautiful resort on the stunning Raa Atoll, recently unveiled its Live Maldivian Village Museum, which focuses on 4,000 years of Maldivian history. Guests can sample local delicacies at a traditional open kitchen, learn about the art of coral stone carving and find out why locals are known as some of the world’s best boat builders.

Snorkelers filming and swimming near a manta ray in Hanifaru Bay, Maldives

Timing is everything

Let’s get one thing straight: there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . But considering the season is important if you’ve got your heart set on certain activities. If you’re planning on swimming with mantas, for example, a stay on a Baa Atoll resort between May and November is your best bet, although July to October is a great time for manta sightings elsewhere. If you’re planning on a surf session, you’ll need to visit between April and October.

We recommend: frequent holidays

To ensure you experience the Maldives’ best bits, schedule a holiday every month without fail. We’re joking, but you get the point: think what you want to see and do, and brush up on the different areas’ seasonal selling points.

Maldives Minister Urges Indians to Visit As India Moves from Top Source Market to 6th

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

May 7th, 2024 at 9:45 AM EDT

The Maldivian tourism minister's plea to Indian visitors highlights the critical role tourism plays in the country's economic framework. It also speaks volumes about India's outbound tourism potential.

Peden Doma Bhutia

It’s been four months since the #BoycottMaldives trend started in India, and Maldives wants those tourists back.

“As the tourism minister, I want to ask Indians to please be a part of Maldives’ tourism,” said Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal to PTI Videos. “Our economy depends on tourism. Our people and the government will extend a warm welcome to Indian travelers.”

The tensions began when three Maldivian politicians made disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indian arrivals have plummeted more than 40% since then — to roughly 44,000 so far this year.

VIDEO | Here’s what Tourism Minister of Maldives Ibrahim Faisal said on India-Maldives relations. “We have a history. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India). We always promote peace and a friendly environment. Our people and the government will… pic.twitter.com/xFgEkgEunv — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) May 6, 2024

India’s ranking from the second-largest tourism source market during this period last year to the sixth shows the impact of the diplomatic tensions.

Maldives wants to mend the relationship. “We have a history. The Indian government has been very helpful during our time of need. We welcome Indian arrivals that’s a clear message from us. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India) and promote peace and a friendly environment,” the Maldives tourism minister said.

Faisal also talked about how India’s large population presents a huge tourism market for Maldives.

What Started It All

The controversy arose after Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep islands, with social media users suggesting that the visit was a push for Indian tourists to visit domestic destinations rather than international ones like Maldives.

The three Maldivian deputy ministers used words such as “clown” to refer to Modi, leading to the boycott.

Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip announced that it would suspend all flight bookings to Maldives. Skift tried searching for flights on the EaseMyTrip platform on Wednesday and found none.

“Since mid-January, we’ve upheld our decision of suspending flights to the Maldives,” Nishant Pitti, CEO and co-founder, of EaseMyTrip, told Skift. “As a leading Indian online travel agency (OTA) and out of a sense of responsibility, we prioritized our commitment over the business opportunities and continue to stand by it.”

Maldives Wants Indian Tourists

India was the biggest source market for tourism into the Maldives in 2023, with over 11% share in its 1.8 million tourism arrivals, according to the tourism ministry.

Last year, Maldives brought in 209,198 Indian tourists.

The usually-reticent CEO of resort chain Soneva, Sonu Shivdasani, also wrote about the potential impact of the diplomatic stand off on the tourism industry , and hoped for a reconciliation.

Determined to increase Indian arrivals to the island destination, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, had shared with Skift its plans to host roadshows in 3 Indian cities in July.

“Properties and resorts that rely heavily on the Indian market have been severely affected. This will hurt us in the long term and that is why we have decided to engage with the India market,” Abdulla Ghiyas, president of the association told Skift.

  • The hidden ‘Cotswolds of London’ is just 40 minutes from the centre

St John's Leytonstone church, Leytonstone, Bushwood, London

From bustling city streets to towering skyscrapers, London isn’t necessarily synonymous with peace and quiet.

But if you’re looking for a slice of the rural vibe while maintaining proximity to the city centre, the hidden ‘Cotswolds of London’ could provide the answer.

Found in the northern area of Leytonstone in East London , Bushwood is named after the ancient woodland of the same name – and, as such, has gathered praise for its village-like feel.

It’s little surprise that it gives off this aura, considering that historically, it was a village. Taking its name from an old milestone called the ‘High Stone,’ Leytonstone was originally ‘Leyton-atte-Stone.’

Bushwood area of Leytonstone

Fast forward to 2024 and this up-and-coming area is found on the Central Line, with Bushwood specifically being only around 40 minutes from the likes of Soho on the tube.

And yet, it’s characterised by cosy cottages and cobbled streets – a million miles away from the high-rise developments further into the centre.

Things to do in Bushwood and Leytonstone

From independent pubs to green spaces, Bushwood and the wider Leytonstone area give off the idyllic vibes of a more rural community, but with a more central location.

Established in 1854, there’s atmosphere aplenty to be found at The North Star in the heart of the old Leytonstone village.

Formed of two Victorian cottages, it was refurbished in the 1950s and largely remains the same, featuring a saloon-style bar, fireplace and traditional tiling.

Here, you’ll find an independent community pub serving up the likes of Paulaner, Staropramen and Pravha beer as well as an array of wines, seltzers and soft drinks.
