Lake Constance

The rolling landscape, the mild climate and a plethora of water sport and other leisure activities are responsible for attracting many holidaymakers and day trippers to Lake Constance, especially in the summer months.

Description

Measuring 64 km in length and 12 km at it widest point, Lake Constance, which is sited at the tripoint of Switzerland/Germany/Austria, is the third largest lake in Central Europe. Scheduled boat services, allied with a range of attractive year-round offers and run by various companies from all three neighbouring states, operate on Lake Constance. The "white fleet" connects the small shoreline towns and attractions around the lake. On the Swiss, south-western side of the lake, the noteworthy settlements include Romanshorn, Arbon and Rorschach with their delightful old towns, as well as picturesque townships on the Untersee (Lower Lake) such as Gottlieben, Ermatingen and Stein am Rhein. One of Europe’s most beautiful lake and river cruises starts off at Kreuzlingen, leads through the Untersee to Stein, and then continues along the Rhine to Schaffhausen. At the other end of the lake, boats cast off from Rorschach to ply the romantic course of the Old Rhine river and arrive at Rheineck. Boats, buses, cableways and railways can all be used conveniently and easily with the Lake Constance EuRegio cross-national day card, as well as the multiple-day Lake Constance Experience Card which also offers free admission to 195 excursion destinations. Popular cruise destinations to nearby non-Swiss terrain include Mainau Island with its flower gardens and parks, and Reichenau peninsula with its UNESCO-World-Heritage-listed monastery. A car ferry connects Romanshorn with the opposite German lakeshore in Friedrichshafen. The Romanshorn boat harbour is the largest leisure harbour on Lake Constance and it is here that Lake Constance unfolds to its maximum size and beauty. There’s even now a steamship that operates on Lake Constance again: after a labour-intensive restoration over several years to return the vessel to original state, the ‘Hohentwiel’ steamer now offers public cruises again. The former Royal Württemberg steamship is also available for charter. The gently undulating landscape around Lake Constance is a paradise for active holidaymakers. This excursion and relaxation region offers countless water sports opportunities, hiking and walking trails, but especially skating routes and cycling tracks. A favourite classic is the Lake Constance Cycle Path, which leads right around the lake.

Lake Constance

Lying on the Rhine, below the northern foot of the Alps, Lake Constance is the bespoke, largest lake in Germany. Sharing borderlines with Austria and Switzerland, the fascinatingly beautiful lake offers a breathtaking scene, with its impressive expanse of water, encompassing 270 kilometres of shoreline.

Freshwater Lake Constance is made up of four parts, with the deepest area being the Obersee that stretches from Konstanz to Bregenz Bay with a periphery of attractive, old lakeside villages.

Lake Constance is the perfect destination for sailing and water sports enthusiasts. Cycling around the lake is a common and fun way of enjoying its picturesque views, old castles, out of the ordinary medieval villages, exquisite gardens, rich culture and history.

When to visit

September in Lake Constance means pedalling through vineyards dense with grapes and farm stands overflowing with pears and apples. People who have tried it describe the experience as ‘ feeling away, yet a few minutes from a priory, glass of wine or slice of pie.’

lake constance tourism

Enjoy quiet time as you find inner peace in Mid-April and May by sitting at the harbour or taking long walks around the island, through the quaint villages, while being captivated by the marvellous Swiss Alps.

Some boat rides may only run during weekends and off-peak months while the colder months around winter can be a bit challenging because of frequent dense fogs.

Getting there and around

Being a tourist hotspot in Europe, Lake Constance has a significant touristic infrastructure. You can get to this incredible natural feature by plane or train.

The nearest commercial airports are in Memmingen, Stuttgart, Friedrichshafen and Zurich. The best part is that it only takes about 2 hours’ drive to get to the lake, from any of these airports.

Use a train that goes around the lake and stops at landmark junctions like Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Radolfzell, Lindau, Romanshorn, Kreuzligen and Rorschach.

Get around the striking and third largest lake in central Europe via boat or train for a civilised excitement.

Whether it is during a sunny day or starry night, you will find a ferry crossing Bodensee. The fare depends on the size of your car.

Onto a big boat, cross Lake Constance in a peachy quarter-hour ride with cars, motorcycles, trucks, bicycles and other pedestrians. The upper deck lounge sells cold and hot beverages, snacks and a variety of quick bites.

Taxi cabs also wait around the ferry dock to pick you up and take you anywhere you want to go.

If you are in a hurry, the most frequent boat crossings are:

The ferry between Konstanz and Meersburg. It runs for a few times an hour, from 06:00 to 24:00 and once every hour, from 00:00 to 06:00.

The Katamaran ferry between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn runs once an hour from 06:00 to 19:00.

The ferry between Friedrichshafen and Romanshor runs per hour, from around 05:30 to 22:30.

You can also choose more unwinding crossings as you enjoy a meal, beer or a bask on the sunlit top deck as you delight at the scenic view of the Alps. However, most of these boats only run during the day, mostly from April to October.

All the towns and cities in Bodensee are serviced by the three national railroads of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. However, the amount of time spent in between stops is best in Germany and Austria.

Just over seven kilometers north of Konstanz off the southern shore of the Überlinger See, it's also one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Germany . And for good reason.

This spectacular natural island attracts many visitors with its beautiful parks and gardens, luxuriant with semitropical and tropical vegetation. This abundance of flora and the surrounding clear waters of the lake are also a big draw for photographers who come here to take memorable photos of some of the best scenery in Germany.

Lindau

Picturesque Lindau, the largest town on the Bavarian shores of Lake Constance, is split between an island and the slopes of the mainland and linked by a bridge, the Neue Seebrücke. The harbor is well worth visiting and is notable for its old lighthouse, the 13th-century Mangturm.

At the ends of the outer harbor walls are Lindau's best-known landmarks, the six-meter-high Bavarian lion and the 33-meter-high new lighthouse, both dating from 1856. The latter offers magnificent views of the town and the Alps.

Other fun things to do in Lindau include exploring the Old Town (Altstadt). Lindau in Bodensee Map - Tourist Attractions

The Allgäu is an attractive upland and mountain region that occupies the southern part of Bavarian Swabia, between the popular travel destinations of Lake Constance and the Lech Valley, and extends northwest into Württemberg. Traversed by the Deutsche Alpenstrasse and, farther north, a branch of the popular Upper Swabian Baroque Highway tourist route, it's a beautiful area for a driving trip or to explore on foot.

The high Alpine chain of the Allgäu Alps, part of the Northern Calcareous Alps, forms the boundary between Bavaria and the Austrian provinces of Vorarlberg and Tirol. The landscape is spectacular, with its tiers of steep foothills, magnificent lakes, quiet ponds and moors, vast forests, lush mountain meadows, and trim villages set against an imposing backdrop of mountains.

The Allgäu is also a region of spas and medicinal springs. One of the best known, the Kneipp water cure, was first devised in Bad Wörishofen and is now applied in many other spas.

Konstanz Harbor

A highlight of any visit to Konstanz is exploring the town's harbor. It's here you'll find the famous Kaufhaus . Dating from 1388, this old warehouse was built specifically for trade with Italy. It's often referred to as the Konzilsgebäude, having been the meeting place of the conclave of cardinals who elected Pope Martin V in 1417.

The harbor entrance is marked by a fascinating statue called Imperia, which commemorates this famous event. Although only erected in 1993, this stunning nine-meter-high statue has become a well-known landmark in Konstanz.

Address: Hafenstraße, 78462 Konstanz

The Zeppelin Museum

The pretty town of Friedrichshafen has long been famous for its connection to Germany's Zeppelin airships. It was here the famous Hindenburg , heralded as the world's most luxurious "liner of the air," was built, only to meet its tragic, fiery end in Lakehurst in the US in 1937.

Today, the airship's former hangar now houses the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen with its fascinating displays and exhibits retelling the history of LZ 129 and the events leading up to its destruction.

An interesting thing to do is explore the reconstructions of the airship's Bauhaus-inspired interiors, including the elegant lounges and passenger cabins, as well as areas used by the crew. Other highlights include displays of artifacts and pieces of wreckage, artworks, and photos, as well as scale models showcasing the history of airship travel. English-language guided tours are available.

Address: Seestraße 22, 88045 Friedrichshafen

View from the tower over Friedrichshafen

Be sure to also include the remarkable Zeppelin NT on your Friedrichshafen itinerary. This modern-day take on the famous Zeppelin airships of the 1930s demonstrates how relevant the technology remains, and how, thanks to modern technologies, it is now entirely safe. Best of all, the company behind the Zeppelin NT now offers a variety of thrilling excursions over Lake Constance from Bodensee Airport.

A "cruise" can last anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours, while those with the money and inclination can opt for a two-day personal Zeppelin flight training experience. Once airborne, you'll marvel at the views through the airship's large panorama windows as you slowly pass over the town and lake at heights of 300 meters.

Back on terra firma, join an English-language guided tour of the Zeppelin Hangar, one of the largest such aircraft facilities in Germany, and learn more about the workings of these amazing machines. And if you're hungry after all that excitement, there's also a restaurant on-site offering great views over the airfield.

Address: Messestraße 132, 88045 Friedrichshafen

Reichenau

Near Konstanz is the largest of the many islands of Lake Constance, Reichenau. Connected to the mainland by a causeway and covering an impressive 1,057 acres, this beautiful island has long been inhabited.

Among its oldest man-made structures are three churches belonging to the famous monastery of Reichenau: St. George's Church in Oberzell with its fine wall paintings of the Ottonian period, the Minster of St. Mary and St. Mark with a rich treasury in the sacristy, and the church of Saints Peter and Paul in Niederzell.

Founded in 724 CE by Charles Martel, Charlemagne's grandfather, they're among the finest examples of Early Romanesque art in Germany, both for their architecture and for their magnificent frescoes. Also of note at the northwestern tip of the island is the 14th-century Schloss Windegg.

View from the Lake Constance Trail

Walkers and cyclists are well catered to by the excellent Lake Constance Trail (Bodensee-Rundwanderweg). This spectacular trail network encircles the entire lake at varying distances from its shores for about 272 kilometers. Within Germany, the trail frequently follows the paths waymarked by the Black Forest Association (Schwarzwaldverein).

Highlights you'll encounter along the way include the Wollmatinger Ried nature reserve, as well as the majority of the lake's small villages, the historic towns of Lindau and Konstanz , and the islands of Reichenau and Mainau . You can join a hiking tour, which can last anywhere from a day to a week or even longer. Even casual walkers and cyclists can enjoy the trail, as it's easily accessible at numerous entry points around the lake.

The German Stilthouse Museum

A highlight of a visit to Lake Constance is a chance to visit the wonderful Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen. Literally translated as the Pile Dwelling Museum , it's usually referred to as "the German Stilthouse Museum." This fascinating attraction consists of an open-air museum with reconstructions of stone- and bronze-age homes.

Opened in 1922, it's a wonderful way to spend time exploring living conditions of the lake's original residents, dating as far back as 6,000 years. Tours take in re-created buildings on the shore before delving into the heart of the attraction, the Lake Dwellings, built over the water on piles and offering superb views of the area's stunning scenery.

English-language guided tours are included in the price of admission and last up to an hour.

Exploring Lake Constance by Boat

Exploring Lake Constance can easily be done by boat, a mode of transportation that offers many opportunities for sightseeing without needing a car. Tourist boat services on Lake Constance run from mid-April to mid-October, the main routes including Konstanz, Überlingen, Kreuzlingen, and Lindau, with many additional stops being made to smaller communities.

There are also ferry services capable of carrying cars, most of which run year-round between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn and between Konstanz-Staad and Meersburg. Local passenger ferries also operate between Allensbach station and the island of Reichenau and across the Rhine at Konstanz.

During the summer, numerous excursions of various kinds are offered, from whole-day or half-day trips to shorter breakfast or lunch trips. There are also fun journeys including evening mystery excursions.

Hohentwiel

Perched high atop the ancient volcano of Hohentwiel stand the ruins of Hohentwiel Castle (Schloss Hohentwiel ) , one of the largest and most impressive castle ruins in all of Germany. Located just 30 kilometers west of Lake Constance near Singen , it's an easy place to find, as both the hill and the castle stand out dramatically from their surrounds.

While the now much-eroded volcano is many millions of years old, the historic castle dates back to 914 CE and was part of a fortress complex that included a monastery. It remained in use right up until the 1800s, and in that time withstood countless sieges, as well as serving later on as a prison.

Today, it's a delightful place to explore for its interesting history, as well as its amazing views over Singen and the surrounding countryside.

The Old Castle, Meersburg

The attractive old lakeside town of Meersburg — a name that literally translates as "Castle on the Sea" — is home to not just one, but two, fine old castles. The oldest of these, referred to simply as the Old Castle (Alte Burg), is a well-preserved medieval fortress that can, in fact, trace its history all the way back to the 7th century when its original central tower was constructed.

Notable as the oldest still-inhabited castle in Germany, it's well worth visiting for its interesting interiors, with highlights that include the Fortress Museum with its many original artifacts and furnishings. Be sure to also take a peek at the old dungeon and torture chamber. All told some 30 rooms can be visited as part of a self-guided tour, including the kitchen and bakery, guards room, and armory. A restaurant is also located on-site.

Address: Schloßpl. 10, 88709 Meersburg, Germany

Meersburg's New Castle

Just a short stroll away from Meersburg's Old Castle is the New Castle (Neues Schloss). This attractive 18th-century edifice with its Baroque flourishes was completed in 1712 as a palace of the Prince Bishops. Now open to the public, the castle houses the Town Gallery (Städtische Galerie) and the Dornier Museum, both worth visiting for their impressive displays and exhibits related to local history and culture.

The New Castle is also where you'll find the Palace Museum of the Prince Bishops (Fürstbischöfliche Schlossmuseum), which includes a variety of rooms preserved in their original manner. Also worth a visit are the castle grounds, which include a lovely garden terrace boasting magnificent views over Lake Constance.

After exploring these two lovely castles, be sure to spend time visiting some of the historic castle-inspired attractions in the old town of Meersburg itself. Highlights include the town square, or Schlossplatz, notable for its large old clock with an attractive face portraying Chronos, the God of Time, and the pleasant Castle Chapel.

Also worth seeing are the two old town gates that have survived since medieval times, along with a number of well-preserved half-timbered houses. For those with an interest in German literature, the Droste Museum is worth popping into for its mementos and displays of original writing by poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

Address: Schloßpl. 13, 88709 Meersburg, Germany

Another area castle that has seen continued ownership and occupancy over the centuries is the beautiful German Renaissance-era Castle Heiligenberg (Schloss Heiligenberg).

Built in the 16th century on the ruins of an old medieval fortress, Castle Heiligenberg is considered to be one of the luckiest castles in the country. Not only has it survived countless conflicts intact, it was miraculously spared during the Thirty Years War after an attempt to destroy it with barrels of explosives ended up failing after the fuses had been lit.

These days, in addition to enjoying its superb views over Lake Constance, visitors can explore the huge two-story-tall Grand Hall. This splendid room is notable for its elegant wood ceiling and floor, along with its many fine artworks and old coats-of-arms.

Be sure to also visit the equally fascinating Castle Chapel. It's home to the family's crypt and a burial place for family members since 1586. Also worth seeing is the Fürstenberg Collections with its fine displays of historic uniforms, chalices, and trophies.

Also of interest are unique artifacts, such as a portable urinal that once belonged to Napoleon and an impressive natural history collection. Regular events from musical concerts to Christmas festivals and polo matches are held here. English-language guided tours are available.

Address: 64342 Seeheim-Jugenheim, Germany

Salem Abbey and Palace

The town of Salem should certainly be included on your Lake Constance itinerary. Here, you'll be rewarded with a chance to explore the lovely Salem Abbey and Palace (Kloster und Schloss Salem), a former Cistercian monastery in one of the most beautiful settings in the area.

The monastery itself can trace its history all the way back to the 12th century and was once the most important such site in the country. After secularization, interesting decorative Baroque flourishes were added to the surviving Gothic-style monastery buildings, making for a unique display that has remained largely unchanged since then.

An on-site museum showcases the "Masterpieces of the Imperial Abbey," including many fine original artworks and furnishings. Other highlights include a collection of antique firefighting equipment; the delightful gardens, complete with an adventure playground for the kids; plus a shop and on-site dining. English-language guided tours and audio guides are available.

If time allows, be sure to also visit the famous Affenberg Salem , home to one of Europe's largest open-air monkey enclosures. This fascinating attraction is home to some 200 or so Barbary macaques. Feeding time is a great time to visit.

Address: Kloster und Schloss, 88682 Salem, Germany

Bregenz, Austria

Located on Lake Constance's southeastern shore, the small city of Bregenz is a great place to visit if you're looking to sample Austria. This vibrant cultural center is popular for its many interesting festivals, the largest of which, the Bregenz Festival , features an array of operatic and orchestral performances.

Given its size and beautiful lakeside setting, Bregenz is immensely fun to explore on foot. Starting at the harbor, follow the lovely Lake Promenade (Seepromenade) past an array of pleasant shops and cafés.

From the waterfront, you're an easy walk to some of the prettiest parts of Old Town Bregenz. Along the way, you'll want to watch out for the old market square, notable for its many historic buildings and churches, some dating back to the 17th century.

Lake Constance: What To Do In Switzerland And Germany

lake constance

Lake Constance is a vast lake shared by Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. It’s a popular vacation spot among both locals and tourists, thanks to a variety of fun and exciting things to do near the lake.

It’s popular for swimming, sightseeing, and nature trails, so you can spend your time at Lake Constance however your like. This detailed guide includes all the best things to do in the Lake Constance area, on both the Swiss and German sides of the beautiful lake!

Table of Contents

How to Get to Lake Constance

Lake Constance

You can easily travel to the Lake Constance region by train. It’s only about an hour away from Zurich, and there are direct trains from the Swiss metropolis to smaller towns on the lake shore.

It is also possible to travel to Lake Constance from other parts of the country, but it will take a lot longer. Zurich is one of the closest transport hubs to the lake region, so it’s generally best to explore the lake in northern Switzerland while you’re still in the area.

If you’re traveling from western Switzerland, expect to spend 3-4 hours traveling to Lake Constanz. The journey will include several train changes, with the final one at either Zurich HB or Zurich Airport.

It’s a bit easier to reach Lake Constance from eastern Switzerland. You can usually take a train to Chur, where you can get on a direct train to Rorschach , a small town on the southern shore of the lake.

Things to Do Around Lake Constance

Lake Constance

Mainau is a small island in the northern part of Lake Constance. It’s connected to the mainland with a bridge, so it’s easily accessible to all visitors. It’s the perfect place to visit if you want to spend a day in nature, exploring parks, and historical landmarks, and just enjoying the pretty views.

The tiny island is best known for its many botanical parks and pristine nature, but there’s definitely more to it than trees and flowers. It’s home to a very charming Baroque castle from the 18th century with a lovely chapel and sprawling gardens on the castle grounds.

Also, there are paths throughout the entire island that let you discover its mesmerizing nature. An important thing to note about Mainau is that there is an entrance fee for the island – it’s around 10 Euros for adults, while dogs and children under the age of twelve get to explore the island for free.

Reichenau

Reichenau is another island in Lake Constance but in a different part of the lake. It offers a different experience to visitors than Mainau – whereas the smaller island is known for its pristine nature and superb environmental practices, Reichenau is better known for its many vegetable farms. It’s a much bigger island so it will take longer to explore it, but at the same time, it has fewer tourist attractions worth visiting.

The bigger island also boasts a castle, but unfortunately, it’s not open for public visits because it is privately owned. There’s also the Church of Saint George, which is best known for its 10th-century frescoes. In addition to this Roman Catholic church, Reichenau island is home to four other churches you can visit.

But Reichenau’s most popular attraction isn’t even a situation on the island. It’s on the causeway that connects the island to mainland Germany. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Burg Schopflen is very popular with visitors thanks to its rich history and stunning scenic views.

Konstanz Münster

Konstanz Münster

Konstanz Münster is a historic cathedral in the town of Konstanz and one of the most popular attractions among tourists who visit Lake Constance. It’s situated in the old town of Konstanz near the lake shore and it’s open for public visits when there’s not a service in progress.

The church has an observation tower that’s open to visitors, and it’s easily the highlight of the visit. A stunning panoramic view of the lake stretches from the top of the tower, and it’s so wonderful that you could easily spend half an hour just staring out into the distance. It’s worth noting that there’s an entrance fee of 2 Euros for the observation tower, and it’s worth every cent.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore Konstanz’s old town. It’s a charming Altsdadt with lots of historic landmarks, including fountains, statues, towers, and city gates. There are also several interesting museums in the area, so you can easily spend an entire day exploring the beautiful city of Konstanz.

Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls is Europe’s most powerful waterfall, situated just a short train ride away from Lake Constance. If you’re staying near the lake, it’s definitely worth it to go on a day trip to this magnificent waterfall on the Rhine River and observe it in all its glory. The waterfall is in Switzerland, about an hour outside most towns on the lower lake shore.

This magnificent waterfall was formed during the last Ice Age, so more than 15,000 years ago. It is 23 meters tall and 150 meters wide, so it is truly an astonishing sight. The imposing presence of Rhine Falls has inspired many artists previously, most notable of which is Joseph Mallord William Turner , who immortalized it in his paintings.

The most popular ways of exploring the falls and their surroundings include boat trips, train rides, and hiking trails. There are plenty of observation decks in the area that offers magnificent views of this enchanting natural attraction, and they’re usually accessible by easy hiking trails anyone can do.

Pfahlbauten (Pile Dwelling Museum)

Pfahlbauten

The Pile Dwelling Museum is one of the most interesting attractions on the northern shore of Lake Constance. It is a reconstruction of a village from the Stone Age, situated on an excavation site where the village actually existed once, many centuries ago.

There’s a wooden walkway between the dwellings, which makes it super easy to explore all the different attractions in the museum. More than 1,000 artifacts uncovered at various archaeological sites surrounding Lake Constance are exhibited at this museum, so visitors have a unique opportunity to gain insight into the ancient history of the region.

This open-air museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it’s definitely worth the hassle to reach the northern lake shore. The easiest way to get to Pfahlbauten is by ferry from Mainau to Unteruhldingen, which is just a five-minute walk away from the dwellings.

Salem Abbey

Salem Abbey

Salem Abbey is a palace complex around a 12th-century Cistercian monastery in the village of Salem, Germany. It’s some 10 kilometers away from the upper lake shore, in a surprisingly serene area surrounded by vast plains.

One thing to note is that you’ll most likely need a car to get to the Abbey, especially if you’re traveling there from the Swiss side of the lake. Public transport options in the area are not that great and a personal vehicle is definitely the fastest and most convenient way of reaching the former Cistercian monastery.

There are plenty of things to do and see at the palace complex, so plan to spend at least 3-4 hours exploring the area. Tour the abbey, walk around the vast palace gardens, try to make your way to the center of the labyrinth, and definitely visit the on-site museum to learn more about the history and importance of the monastery throughout the ages.

Lindau

Lindau is a German town on the northeastern shore of Lake Constance, right next to the Austrian border. It’s known for a lovely old town that sits entirely on an island in the lake, and which is easily accessible by ferries from Meersburg (Germany), Rorschach (Switzerland), and Bregenz (Austria).

The island with Lindau old town might be small, but it has plenty of attractions to keep you occupied for hours. Visit the landmark Mangturm Tower, see the sculpture of the Bavarian Lion, tour Peterskirche, and check out the charming Diebsturm tower. Visit the City Museum of Lindau or the Kunstmuseum am Inselbahnhof to see some stunning artworks and learn a thing or two about the history of this charming town.

Gartendenkmal Lindenhof Park is the most popular attraction in mainland Lindau and it’s a 40-minute walk away from the heart of the old town. If you have enough time it’s definitely worth checking out, but otherwise, feel free to skip the tour of the mansion.

Lake Constance Trail

Lake Constance Hike

Lake Constance Trail, also known as the Lake Constance Cycle Path , is a popular long-distance circular trail that takes you on an adventure around the entire lake. The entire path is 270 kilometers long, and it’s popular for both hiking and mountain biking.

The trail passes through Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, so you get to visit all the countries that share this wonderful lake and discover countless natural and historical landmarks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and mesmerizing viewpoints. It takes 5-6 days to complete this trail on a bike depending on how much ground you’re covering each day, and how distracted you get with the countless attractions.

Travelers who wish to explore this long-distance trail on foot should plan to spend at least 8-10 days hiking in the region. There are plenty of places where you can spend the night along the way, and this includes hostels, hotels, and various campgrounds.

I wouldn’t recommend attempting this trail in the winter – harsh weather conditions can make certain sections of the trails inaccessible in cold weather, and you might have to cut your adventure short. Plan to do this hike/cycle path in the spring or summer, for the most fulfilling experience.

Meersburg Castle

Meersburg Castle

Meersburg Castle is another excellent historical attraction you should check out if you’re traveling in the Lake Constance region. It’s situated in Meersburg town in Germany, which is easily accessible by a (car) ferry from Konstanz.

The castle dates back to the 12th century and it boasts 35 medieval rooms that are open to visitors. There’s also a cafe in the castle’s baroque hall, which stretches onto the outdoor terrace that offers a beautiful view of Lake Constance.

The castle is open from 10 AM to 6 PM in the winter and 6:30 PM in the summer. Ticket prices for adults are 12.8 Euros, and they can be purchased at the gift shop near the entrance.

This lovely medieval castle is situated in the heart of Meersburg’s old town, so don’t forget to explore other attractions in the area while you’re there. There are multiple observation decks in the area that offer gorgeous panoramic views, and you can even climb to the top of one of the towers that make up the city walls.

Zeppelin Museum

Zeppelin Museum

The Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is an absolute must if you have a thing for technology museums. You can reach the town by ferry from Romanshorn on the Swiss side of the lake, and the museum is right there in the port so you can just walk to it as soon as you get off the ferry.

This museum is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region, mostly because of its detailed exhibits on airships. Learn about airship history, see a reconstruction of the Hindenburg, and check out the museum’s impressive art collection.

The Zeppelin museum is huge and it takes at least a couple of hours to tour it properly and see all the different exhibits. There’s even an airship flight simulator that’s pretty popular with pilots, as well as a couple of interactive exhibits that the youngest visitors seem to enjoy the most.

The museum is open every day except Monday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Tickets are 11 Euros for adults and 6 Euros for children.

Basílica de Birnau

Basílica de Birnau

The Basílica de Birnau is a pilgrimage church from the Baroque period in Birnau-Maurach, Germany. It’s a pretty church on the outside, but you won’t be impressed until you’ve walked through the front gates and seen the impressive decorations inside. Don’t forget to look up while you’re inside the church – the painting on the ceiling is truly breathtaking.

Guided tours of the basilica are organized weekly, but visitors must reserve their spot on the tour at least several days in advance. Entry to the church is free and you can walk in whenever you want if there’s not a service, but you won’t get a guided tour. There’s also a gift shop on-site – buy something there if you want a souvenir from the Basilica, and you’ll help support the monastery.

The easiest way to reach the basilica is by driving. You can take the ferry from Minau to Unteruhldingen, and then you’re just 10 minutes away from the Basilica. It’s also possible to rely on public transport, but it will take longer and it includes walking from the port to the train station in Unteruhldingen.

Wildlife and Leisure Park Allensbach

Allensbach

If you decide at any point that it’s time to take a break from all the sightseeing, head to the Wildlife and Leisure Park Allensbach . The adventure park is situated in a forested area in the northern part of Lake Constance, and it boasts vast enclosures where wild boar, brown bears, and bison are allowed to roam freely.

The park is particularly popular with families, thanks to a variety of rides and playgrounds for children. They can have fun on the slides, ride in the small sightseeing trains, or just go nuts on the many playgrounds within the park. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for something fun to do, but at the same time, you want to spend the day outdoors soaking in the sun and enjoying the wonderful nature that surrounds Lake Constance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Constance

Is lake constance worth visiting.

Lake Constance View

Of course, it is. It might not be as luxurious an experience as staying on Lake Geneva, or as fun as Lake Thun, but it holds a special charm that you won’t experience until you’re there. This is the third largest lake by surface area in all of western and central Europe, plus it is shared by three countries.

This means that you can discover multiple different cultures and historical attractions of different countries all within the span of a few days. Spend one day in Germany, then head to Austria, and end your vacation with a tour of the Swiss side of the lake shore. There are plenty of attractions to keep you occupied for days, as well as many hiking trails and beautiful landmarks.

The region around this lake has been inhabited for a very long time; some areas have been inhabited since the stone age, and there are museums and archaeological sites that will attest to that fact. There are also several UNESCO World Heritage Sites here, as well as an abundance of hiking and cycling trails worth exploring.

Can you swim in Lake Constance?

Lake Constance Swim

Yes, you can swim, sail, and even go windsurfing on Lake Constance even though it’s technically a glacial lake. The water quality of the lake is excellent, plus there are many lidos (beaches) with designated swimming areas and facilities for visitors.

It is possible to swim in the lake from June to September, but August is the optimal month for a relaxing lakeshore vacation if you don’t enjoy swimming in cold water. The average water temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius throughout August, which is more than high enough for an enjoyable swim session.

Explore The Most Charming Spots To Visit Around Lake Constance

As my two-hour rail journey from  Munich  came to a halt – the train could travel no further, I was in Lindau, the end of the line – I knew my hunch that  Lake Constance  was a bucket list-worthy travel destination was spot on. Known as Bodensee in German, Lake Constance is impressive in size:  Central Europe ’s third-largest freshwater lake, this spectacular body of water is 39 miles long and shared between Germany ,  Austria , and  Switzerland , three of the best places to visit anywhere on the planet. How could it be anything other than awesome?

Not only that, but I knew that in addition to its beautiful scenery, a mix of rolling German countryside with vineyard-adorned slopes on one side and the Austrian and  Swiss Alps  on the other, Lake Constance was of cultural and historical significance. Inhabited since the Stone Age, this fertile region was of importance to the Romans as well as the rival states that grew up around it.

My research also confirmed that Lindau, located on the lake’s north shore near its westernmost point, was the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful corner of Europe. From here, I was able to spend three glorious days in early October enjoying its mild climate while exploring some of the most charming spots to visit around Lake Constance.

Medieval Lindau

Aerial view of Lindau, Bodensee, Germany

In my opinion, the magnificently preserved architecture of Lindau, especially around its Old Town (Altstadt), rivals that of many of Germany’s better-known Medieval towns, including the famous Rothenburg. Its quaint cobble-stone streets are fun to explore on foot, especially Maximilianstrasse with its beautifully preserved  Medieval  and  Renaissance  buildings, many of them now home to classy boutique shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants.

From here, head down to Lindau Hafen, the town’s harbor area, passing the 15th Century Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) along the way and stopping for a photo of its richly frescoed façade. The harbor itself is simply stunning and is where you’ll find two of Lindau’s most famous historic landmarks: the 20-foot-tall Bavarian Lion (Bayerischer Löwe Lindau), which gazes out (welcomingly, I was told) over the harbor entrance and the nearly 120-foot tall New Lighthouse (Neuer Lindauer Leuchtturm).

The town’s most charming spot, though, was one I stumbled upon by chance on the last day of my visit. Realizing I hadn’t explored the island’s west shoreline, I headed for the Pulverturm, or “Powder Tower.” Built in 1508 and an integral part of the old city walls, I arrived at the town’s westernmost point just in time to witness a picture-perfect sunset over Lake Constance.

Cruise Lake Constance

Cruise vesels in Lake Constance.

Hopping aboard one of the many  Lake Constance tour boats  that ply the waters here is an excellent way to get to see more of the lake. Several of these operate out of Lindau harbor, where I sailed from, as well as other towns on Lake Constance, including Friedrichshafen. While a variety of cruise options are available, including dinner cruises, I chose a 90-minute tour that journeyed across to the Austrian side of the lake so that I could catch a glimpse of Bregenz from the water.

The views of Lindau were also awesome, especially from the ship’s stern as you pass through the harbor entrance into the lake and again from the bow as you return. The best photographs frame the town’s magnificent Mangturm, the 12th-century tower built to defend the harbor from lakeside attacks, framed by the harbor entrance with its Bavarian Lion and lighthouse.

Regular ferry services also operate out of Lindau, Konstanz, and Friedrichshafen. These include a high-speed catamaran service and a car ferry. Traveling to Lake Constance in the colder weather? Don’t worry; winter ferry service and cruise vessels operate year-round, offering a different perspective.

Friedrichshafen

The charming town of Friedrichshafen on the shores of Lake Constance.

An easy 20-minute train rider from Lindau-Insel train station (an hour by bike or five hours if you choose to hike), the town of Friedrichshafen is another charming spot to include on your Lake Constance travel itinerary. It’s also a great place to stay for a night or two, especially if you plan on spending time exploring the town’s deep-rooted connection with Germany’s aviation history.

It was here in Friedrichshafen that Count Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, a one-time military officer turned entrepreneur and inventor, chose to base his iconic airship company. Established in 1900 with the inaugural flight of his legendary line of airships, Zeppelins soon became synonymous with luxury air travel, culminating with the tragic  Hindenburg disaster  of 1937 when the largest and most opulent such airship, the  LZ 129 Hindenburg,  crashed in Manchester Township,  New Jersey .

You can learn more about both the man and his invention at the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen. Housed in the town’s former harbor train station and just steps away from Lake Constance, the museum does a superb job of demonstrating the influence of Zeppelin and his machines on the local community, as well as the country (and the world) at large.

While Friedrichshafen is known for its industry – the famed Dornier aircraft company, also called the town home – it’s not without its quiet corners. For me, the most picturesque and charming spot in town was the Schlosshorn, a delightful viewing platform and park located at the base of the Schlosskirche that overlooks the lake. While a 20-minute walk along parks and promenades from the town center, it’s well worth it for another of those stunning Lake Constance sunsets, especially if you’re lucky enough as I was to catch a glimpse of a Zeppelin passing overhead.

Take A Zeppelin Flight

A Zeppelin flying above Lake Constance.

Yes, your eyes won’t deceive you: Zeppelins do still fly out of Friedrichshafen. These modern-day Zeppelins fly out of the Zeppelin Hangar at Friedrichshafen Airport, a short bus ride from the town center. These unique tours over Lake Constance will leave you feeling both exhilarated and amazed that this more than 100-year-old design is as nimble, airworthy, and comfortable as it is.

Operated by  Zeppelin NT  (Neue Technologie), these state-of-the-art machines are filled with non-flammable helium, so safety isn’t a concern. The whole experience right up to boarding the aircraft is not unlike that of most airlines, with safety manuals to review and videos to sit through.

Arrive early like I did, and you’ll get to witness the flight before yours takes off, including a first glimpse of the boarding procedure. To ensure weight is distributed evenly through this lighter-than-air aircraft, passengers board one at a time as passengers disembark: one-off, one-on. But with only 14 passengers and two crew members, it’s a fast procedure.

The first thrill comes with the silent, near-vertical take-off. Once at the cruising altitude of around 1000 feet, we head out over the lake on a tour that covers many of the top attractions on Lake Constance, our vantage point providing excellent aerial views of the towns of Meersburg, Immenstaad, and Konstanz, and attractions including the famous “Flower Island” of Mainau and the German Stilthouse Museum, a replica of a bronze age village built on the water.

Bike Around Lake Constance

Biking near Lake Constance.

For a truly memorable experience, consider indulging in a multi-day cycling journey around the entirety of Lake Constance. Stretching for 160 miles around the lake and touching all three countries, the Lake Constance Cycle Path sticks close to the shoreline and offers no end of charming views of this beautiful body of water.

Did I do it? Not this trip. But I did speak to several people who did, and every one of them said the 10 to 12 days they’d spent doing it was the experience of a lifetime. Looks like Lake Constance is back on my bucket list.

The Final Word

lake constance tourism

To help you plan your own adventure exploring the most charming spots around Lake Constance, here are a few tips and tactics I picked up along the way:

Getting Around:  Available to purchase from multiple locations around Lake Constance, including rail and bus stations, as well as online, the  Bodensee Card  is your ticket to fun experiences in this beautiful region of Europe. These all-inclusive travel cards are available in several multi-day configurations and cover admission to many area attractions, public transit, and adventures, including a Lake Constance boat cruise. Best of all, the card is good in all three surrounding countries, plus the neighboring country of Liechtenstein.

Where to Stay:  In Lindau, I stayed in the excellent Hotel Alte Schule Lindau/Bodensee. Set in a 15th-century former schoolhouse, this charming family-run boutique hotel was not only comfortable but also extremely quiet thanks to its Old Town location. A delicious, healthy buffet breakfast with espresso coffee is included with your stay.

In Friedrichshafen, I stayed in the hip (but not too hip) Lukullum Hotel. This lovely modern hotel boasts excellent views over Lake Constance from its rooftop bar and patio, which also serves delicious traditional dishes with a modern flair.

Explore Konstanz town and harbor

Konstanz Port, Konstanz, Germany

The 11th-century Konstanz Minster dominating the skyline of Konstanz is an incredible sight, with an equally impressive interior. The cobblestoned Old Town is a great spot to stroll, thanks to its astonishing architecture, especially the historic Hohenzollernhaus and Rathaus. The Rosgarten Museum, Archäologisches Landesmuseum, and Hus-Haus Museum provide a generous dose of culture. The Konstanz harbor, with its sweeping vistas, is an incredible spot to slow down and enjoy the beauty of nature, and witnessing a sunset from there is an unforgettable experience.

Click gorgeous photos at Mainau

Mainau, the Flower Island, Konstanz, Germany

Mainau , the Flower Island, is a burst of colors off the shore of Lake Constance. The island is home to a million flowers and plants across a mind-boggling number of species. The look of the island changes with the seasons but is consistently mesmerizing, and the air above the island is always thick with the heady aroma of flowers. Mainau Castle, built in the 1700s, provides a fitting backdrop to this incredibly beautiful garden island. Mainau also has a butterfly garden and playgrounds, making it a perfect family destination.

Enjoy the beauty of Lindau’s harbor

lake constance tourism

Lindau is a town in Bavaria, Germany, known for its gorgeous panorama over the lake and historic architecture from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. Lindau’s harbor is guarded by the two most famous landmarks of Lindau —the 33-meter-high (108 ft) lighthouse and the six-meter-high (19.6 ft) lion. The 20-meter-high (65.5 ft) Mangturm Tower with its glazed roof tiles remains an inspiring sight even after it lost its job to the new lighthouse. Travelers willing to climb 89 steps to the top of the tower are rewarded with uninterrupted views over the lake.

Walk down history at Meersburg Castle

The entrance of the old medieval Meersburg Castle

Meersburg Castle (Alte Burg) is the oldest inhabited fortress-castle in all of Germany; its history dates back to the 7th century. The castle, perched high above the lake, poses an impressive sight. The castle museum showcases the Knights Hall, Arms Hall, and ancient rooms. Visitors get to walk the corridors where the guards marched and see the vantage points from where they used to keep an eye on the surroundings. The creepy death chamber and the dungeon are also open to the public. The castle garden is a green oasis in which travelers can relax and slow down before continuing with their sightseeing.

Be mesmerized by the landscape of Allgäu

Allgäu, Germany

Many travelers agree that the Allgäu highland, sprawling over a large part of Bavarian Swabia and spilling over to Austria, is one of the most stunning landscapes in Europe. The area is dotted with mirror-like alpine lakes, swathes of dense forests and unbelievably quaint villages tucked into the lap of majestic mountains. Allgäu has also earned its reputation as a great wellness and health resort. It is also an excellent place to cycle, hike or ski.

Take a leisurely boat ride

Cruise ship on Lake Constance, Lindau, Germany

No trip to Lake Constance is complete without a boat ride . Catamarans, ferries, car ferries and cruise ships operated by multiple companies connect the towns and islands surrounding the lake. Boat trips on Lake Constance not only provide the opportunity to get up close to the lake but also open up an entirely different perspective of the surrounding towns that cannot be imagined from land. Nothing spells romance more effectively than watching the fierce red sun dip into the calm waters, and all from a boat in the middle of the lake.

Visit Salem Monastery and Palace

The Salem Monastery and Castle , a magnificent blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, is the most significant cultural landmark in the Lake Constance region. The massive and richly ornate complex leaves no doubt about the extent of wealth and power enjoyed by the former Cistercian abbey in the 1100s. Today, visitors to the palace get to experience a slice of the splendor that the heads of the imperial abbey were used to. The Gothic church never fails to drop jaws with its stunning alabaster interior designed in the 18th century.

Two countries in one day – Hop over to Bregenz, Austria

Bregenz, Austria

Bregenz , the capital of Vorarlberg, Austria, is perched on the southeastern shore of Lake Constance. This beautiful town is famous for its many excellent museums, vast lakeside summer opera, unique architecture and endless hiking and biking trails. The favorite thing for travelers to do here is to take the gondola to Pfänder Mountain, which promises unforgettable views of Lake Constance, the Swiss Alps, and Allgäu uplands.

See six countries together from the Säntis

Säntis, Switzerland

The 2,502-meter (8,209-foot) Säntis Mountain, on the Switzerland side of Lake Constance, towers over its surroundings. The Säntis Cableway takes visitors all the way up to the peak of Säntis Mountain. Those 10 minutes are usually the highlight of everyone’s holiday, as rarely in life do travelers get the chance to see six countries spread out below their feet! From the terrace and observation deck at the peak, visitors can continue being mesmerized by the views of Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Lichtenstein and Austria in all of their glory.

Travel to the Stone Age – Visit the Stilthouse Museum

Prehistoric stilt houses, like these on Lake Constance, open a window onto early agrarian life in Europe

It is now possible to travel back in time to the Stone and Bronze ages, thanks to the Stilthouse Museum (Pfahlbau Museum Unteruhldingen). This unique museum showcases reconstructed stilt houses belonging to the natives of this region between approximately 4300 BC and 800 BC. The museum offers guided tours and a wealth of information on the lives of the original inhabitants and their lifestyles.

Joyfull time in a Mediterranean climate

Lake Constance

lake constance tourism

All about water - you get it here

Lake constance - water, mountains, meadows and more.

Bordered by three countries, Lake Constance is one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes. Lined with orchards, vineyards and meadows, dotted with small harbours and villages, the Baden-Württemberg shore faces south, soaking up the sun. And the views of the Alps are spectacular! With its near-Mediterranean climate, the lakeside is often referred to as Germany’s Riviera. There are plenty of watersports, from swimming and sailing to kayaking and windsurfing. And the water is really clean and clear. But there are land-based activities as well, from treetop challenges to prehistory that comes to life! Add in hotels and apartments geared up for family needs, and Lake Constance is the perfect place for a family holiday!

GET ACTIVE :  As well as beaches along the shore, there are open-air swimming pools and lidos in resort towns, such as Immenstaad. Check into Aquastaad , where table tennis, beach volleyball, basketball and badminton contrast with watersports. In the resort of Kressbronn , children can learn a new activity, such as water-skiing or sailing. On dry land, cycling is safe and easy; the Bodensee-Radweg is a wide, flat, car-free cycle path that runs right round the lake. Pedal for an hour, a day or longer.

lake constance tourism

ADVENTURES GALORE:   Children love Tarzan-like treetop adventures. Just outside Konstanz, check out Erlebniswald Mainau to see youngsters take on rope-walks, bridges, swings and tree houses, all well-supervised by trained instructors. Or be a pirate for a day in Immenstaad go on a treasure hunt, dress up and sail on a pirate ship!

One of the best days out is just hopping from ferry to ferry . The network of routes links towns in the three countries on the lake, such as Then there are two islands to explore. Famous for its gardens is Mainau , which also has terrific playgrounds for youngsters. Mainau Children’s Land replicates Lake Constance as it was in the olden days; Blumi’s Lakeside World is a themed playground for 3 to 6 year olds; the Dwarf Village is the right size for 1 to 4 year olds and Mainau Farmyard has the best petting zoo ever. Peaceful Reichenau Island is ideal for family cycling trips.

lake constance tourism

LEARN SOMETHING NEW :  Travel back to the past at Meersburg’s Old Castle . Looking out over the lake, this fortress has a dungeon and medieval armour straight out of a story book. Go back even further at Unteruhldingen's Pfahlbauten . This is one of Europe’s largest archaeological open-air museums, where 23 reconstructed houses, built on wooden pilings over the water, show what everyday life was like back in the Stone Age! A century ago, airships were all the rage. The most successful was the Zeppelin, invented in Friedrichshafen. Learn more in the lively museum on the harbour. Or splash out on the flight of a lifetime aboard a modern Zeppelin 300 m / 1,000 ft above Lake Constance and the Alps.

lake constance tourism

THEME PARKS:  An adventure-style theme park, Allensbach’s Wild- und Freizeitpark  combines rides, slides and climbing challenges with falconry shows and 300 animals roaming free.

NATURAL WONDERS : To discover what goes on under water, head for SEA LIFE Konstanz , on Konstanz harbour. Peer at sharks and octopus, clownfish and sea turtles. There are gentoo penguins in the Polar Adventure area and piranhas in the Rainforest Adventure.

TIP: With every SEA LIFE ticket, get free admission to the Lake Constance Museum of Natural History (in the same building).

As for animals on land, Affenberg Salem is home to 200 Barbary macaques. These cheeky creatures roam free in 20 ha / 50 acres of woodland. Add in deer, a colony of white storks and all the fun of feeding time and you have a great day out.

Feeding animals is also a draw at the spacious Wildpark Sonnenhalde . Children can get up close and personal to sheep and llamas, chickens and goats – and go for pony rides. Then there are reptiles – creepy for some but fascinating for others.

For those in the latter group, visit the small Unteruhldingen Reptile House  to see snakes, iguanas and more. And for bird lovers, Lake Constance is a bird watcher’s paradise , attracting 300 species during the year. Late autumn brings black-throated and red-throated loons; in winter, lapwing, dunlin and curlew are among the 250,000 temporary residents.

BEST TIME TO VISIT?   Lake Constance has an almost Mediterranean climate, and the year-round sunshine makes this a four-season destination . Spring is a riot of flowers and blossom in the fruit orchards; summer is all about watersports, as well as land-based adventures; autumn is glorious, with sunshine and changing leaves, while winter brings blue skies, snow and Christmas markets!

Get more - Pay less

Money-saving tip:.

Buy a 3 or 7 day Bodensee Card Plus and get free and discounted admission to 160 attractions, travel on the ferries and more. Save money on public transport (ferries, buses, trains) with the Bodensee Ticket with special family passes. Children under the age of 6 travel free.

FUN PLACES TO STAY: Stay at farms that are specially certified for family holidays . Some raise animals; others have orchards; they all provide a wide range of equipment, from cots and high chairs to toys and books. They also offer dedicated facilities, such as playgrounds, child-friendly toy vehicles, barbecue areas and, of course, all kinds of animals to pet. TIP: Germany’s only Teddy Bear Hotel is the Teddybärenhotel in Kressbronn, which houses the owner’s collection of 1,300 bears. Learn how to make your own bear, or, if you fall in love with one of the hotel’s bears, you can buy it and take it home!

Bodensee (Lake Constance) - Top 13 Cities and Attractions

Bodensee (Lake Constance in English) is the largest lake in Germany . The huge green gem on the German-Austrian-Swiss border is 63 km long . It owes its fame to the fact that it is a real holiday paradise, joined by charming towns . It is mainly a summer destination where everyone goes swimming, sailing or surfing.

The 536 km2 Lake Constance is the 3rd largest stagnant body of water in Europe after Lake Balaton and Lake Geneva. In addition to water sports, cycling is also very popular in the area. The lake can be circled on the 260 km Bodensee-Radweg cycle path.

Despite the proximity of the Alps (which stretches to the eastern side), the atmosphere of the cities has Mediterranean features at the same time. In the shade of palm trees, exotic plants and alpine greens can be found.

More about Bodensee

It is fed by the Rhine River and consists of two parts: the Untersee (lower lake) and the larger Obersee (upper lake). Hills mainly surround the lake, but don't expect huge mountains.

The quality and temperature of the water make water sports possible. Summer tourism based on this contributes greatly to the local economy. There are plenty of restaurants and hotels on the shore of the lake - or in its vicinity. Based on previous statistics, tourists spend 6 million nights here every year. The railway network has been developed. Mainly residents of the surrounding country vacation here.

The Rhine fills the lake mainly with the melted snow layer of the Alps. Over the centuries, it has filled the lake's shallower parts with sediment here and there. In spring, the water can be almost 2-3 meters higher.

Its average depth is 90 meters , but its deepest point reaches 251 meters. In winter, the northern, shallower parts of the lake (7-10 m) can freeze.

As is usually the case with wetlands, many cities have developed on the shores of the lake. The most popular settlements are the following:

  • Konstanz or Constance
  • Friedrichshafen
  • Kreuzlingen

Other noteworthy settlements in the area are St Gallen, Radolfzell, Schaffhausen, Frauenfeld, and Vaduz.

#1 Konstanz

The core and centre town of the lake is Konstanz. The city's core is the fabulous old town , which can present many cultural and historical attractions.

lake constance tourism

Most restaurants and hotels can be found here and in Bregenz - all of which, of course, reach up to five-star service. One of the city's symbols, a statue depicting a woman, commemorates the Council of Constance, which might sound familiar from the history lesson. By the way, many houses and buildings in the old town have survived from that period.

Austria's most picturesque province is Vorarlberg , with the seat of Bregenz. The town by the lake lies at the foot of Pfander mountain . Thanks to its idyllic location, almost everyone can find their calculations. You can go hiking with a cable car - or without it; you can take a bath or take part in a wine tour. There will be no shortage of sightseeing.

lake constance tourism

By the way, Bregenz belonged to both France and Germany in the past - this left its mark on its architecture and gastronomy. Regarding the division of Bregenz, we distinguish Lower and Upper Bregenz.

The top attractions in Bregenz are:

  • Pfänderbahn cable car
