We started kicking around a new look for Surly Hell a while back. We didn’t want to mess with the liquid itself, as it remains a rare constant in the ever-changing craft beer landscape: Bready, lightly sweet malt profile, floral hop aromatics, and a crisp, balanced finish. Traditional and timeless. Instead, we went back to the inspiration for our flagship lager: Dorit Ansari. Dorit is Surly founder Omar Ansari’s mother. She hails from Bremen, Germany. As you may know, Surly has a well-earned rep for hop-forward beers and award-winning IPAs. Which is great, except that Dorit prefers beers with subtler hop profiles, like the zwickelbiers popular back in Bremen. So, we made one. An unfiltered, pale gold lager, named after the German word for “light.” Given that she inspired the beer, it seemed right to make her the star of our new Hell packaging, using a promotional photo from a brochure for Sparky Abrasives, the family business of Dorit and her late husband, Naseem. (The building that housed Sparky Abrasives became the original Surly Brewing location in Brooklyn Center.) Hell’s new look hits shelves this month. Raise a toast (or, more accurately, Prost) to Dorit!

This weekend, remember to visit “your guy” at the meat counter/butcher shop. Their name is either Ed or Frankie. You`re pretty sure they’ve been there since the store was built. Maybe before. Once that mission is complete, grab some Furious and visit our website for information on how to win a Blackstone Griddle and custom Furious Yeti cooler.

Much like Darkness Day, tomorrow`s 18th Anniversary Party is an all-day, all-ages blowout. Show up any time between open and close, and there will be something cool, memorable, or deeply weird going on, preferably all at once. We wouldn`t have it any other way. Here is a rough timeline to instigate your Surly-versary experience: 11am: Doors. Welcome to Surly! 11am-7pm: Lemonade Dunk Tank, Axe (Man) Throwing, and Furious Plate Smashing in the Beer Garden. So many activities! Bullseyes get a free pint while supplies last! 11am-7pm: Darkness Claw Machine in Surly Pizza Upstairs. Prizes include free Darkness bottle cards, free beer cards, and some fun swag. 11am-close: Three throwback merch pieces in our Retail Store, plus the Surly Vintage Merch Store opens with steep discounts on legacy/archival items. 11am-close: Surly phone booth. Step in, leave a voice mail with your favorite Surly story. Noon-5pm: Free brewery tours/samples every hour on the hour! Pre-register on our website or hop on when you get here. 3-6pm: DJ set from Eleganza! 4-5pm: Dunk Omar for Charity. Surly`s founder steps into the dunk tank. $10 gets you three attempts, all proceeds go to Twin Cities Habitat/The House That Beer Built. 6pm: Live music kicks off with Derecho Rhythm Section. 7pm: Eleganza! takes the stage. 8pm: Annie and the Bang Bang puts a bow on it. Midnight: Go home. In addition, there will be surprises and/or delights throughout the entire day. We`ll also have some rare/anniversary beers on draft, and there is no better time to check out our revamped beer hall and pizza offerings, which have gotten a seasonal refresh the last couple weeks. (The hog frites are still there, don`t worry.) See you Saturday!

Big day at the @surlybeerhall today! Our first @thecurrent Happy Hour of 2024 takes place in the Beer Garden from 4-7pm with special guest @jadebirdmusic. These were a blast last summer and we`re looking forward to this year`s editions. Once Jade exits the stage, please turn your attention to the Big Ass TV for a Game 5 Wolves Watch Party! IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to previous commitments, this is our last watch party of the Western Conference Finals, so the next one won`t be until the Wolves complete their historic comeback and face Boston in the NBA Finals. Both events are FREE to attend. You do have to pay for, like, beer and stuff.

10K Brewing – Anoka

Our beer is “Brewed in the Land of 10K Lakes”, and that means something to us. It means Minnesota values. “Nice Beer. Nice People.”

12welve Eyes Brewing – St Paul

We are three “four-eyed” men who grew up down the street from each other in suburban Saint Paul. 15 years and $1,000 later, we purchased our first system, an all-grain homebrewing setup that has traveled with us ever since. Becoming proficient with our all-grain setup through years of practice crafting pilot batches, we brought our knowledge and aspirations with us to Portland, OR where we translated what we learned from the garage to the brewery.

Bent Brewstillery – Roseville

Bent Brewstillery brings to spirits what craft brought to beer: the highest-quality ingredients and the utmost care in preparation. Quality over quantity is the craft brewer’s credo. They extend that to spirits. That’s right: They are Minnesota’s first-ever Brewstillery.

Bent Brewery Renee's Limousine, Minneapolis Minnesota

Big Wood Brewery – White Bear Lake

At Big Wood Brewery, the definition of beer is FUN. They don’t take themselves too seriously (hey, they’re Minnesotans!). But even while they’re having a good time, they are working hard to brew the best, most flavorful beers possible. Ben Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” Big Wood Brewery agrees with old Ben, so they want to make your beer experience a jovial one.

Big Woods Renee's Limousine, Minneapolis Minnesota

Boom Island Brewing Company – NE Minneapolis

Traveling to 13 breweries across Belgium, Kevin Welch was finally able to brew side-by-side with his heroes, the leading innovators in Belgian brewing. He is living (and brewing) proof of the power of one really good beer. He learned firsthand how different strains of yeast combine with spice additions and other “non-traditional” brewing ingredients to create the unique essence of Belgian beers. That’s why, today, you’ll find more than 1.000 different types of beer in Belgium. And now, one authentic Belgian brewery in Minneapolis.

Lake Monster Brewing – St Paul

Why “Lake Monster”? From Loch Ness to Lake Pepin, lake-dwelling cryptids have fascinated explorers and passers-by for centuries. While skeptics might consider the existence of Lake Monsters to be exaggerations, misinterpretations or even fabrications, others believe in a world of mysteries yet to be solved and depths yet to be explored. These intrepid souls think it is worth the effort to venture beneath the surface in search of something unknown and extraordinary. We feel the same way about beer.

Sociable Cider Werks – NE Minneapolis

Sociable is driven by a pretty simple vision. Cider should be much more than the lightly-alcoholic, made-from-concentrate, sweet apple juice boxes that currently dominate the shelf space. Sociable ciders are well carbonated, dry and always made from real apples. Simply put, they should be enjoyed like great draught beer. Sociable is not just hard cider, we’re much more.

sociable cider Renee's Limousine, Minneapolis Minnesota

Steel Toe Brewing – St Louis Park

They believe in working hard, following their passion, giving back to the community, being conscious of the world around them and producing the best quality product while kicking back with a great beer at the end of the day. They are a small MN craft brewery with big dreams of staying small.

The Best Breweries In Boston

June 7, 2024

There’s no shortage of good pints in Boston. And though some diehards may argue that Portland has the most creative beer scene, or that Vermont does everything better than anyone else, Boston’s craft brewers can go toe-to-toe with anybody. In the ‘90s, we were one of the first cities in the country to make hoppy IPAs while everyone else worshipped lagers.

We’ve spent years checking out breweries—and religiously documenting each beer we sip—to bring you this guide on the best taprooms in the Boston metro area. There are other places we love, including you, Treehouse , but they’re further out in the suburbs.

THE BREWERIES

Lamplighter Brewing Co. image

Lamplighter Brewing Co.

Lamplighter has released one well-balanced, flavorful New England IPA after another, along with a bunch of experimental brews, including barleywine, wild ales, and Mexican-style amber lagers. They have two locations—one near Cambridge Crossing and another on Broadway—and Camberville residents keep both packed. We like their Cambridge Crossing taproom a bit more because it’s slightly roomier, with floor-to-ceiling windows that give you a nice view of The Common. Lamplighter also regularly collaborates with some of the hottest names in Boston’s food scene, and has done pop-ups with Sekali for Malaysian bites, Mei Mei Dumplings , and Johnny Boy for Filipino sandwiches

Remnant Brewing

Union Square

Remnant, located in Somerville’s Bow Market, is known for its English-style ales and sessions. And while those are quality, we’ve found that it’s more fun to try their experimental collaborations with local restaurants and breweries, which in the past have included a mushroom beer, a gose brewed with Persian limes in partnership with Sarma , and a Czech-style amber lager made with Gilded Skull Brewing in central Massachusetts. They have plenty of seating for groups of various sizes, and the outdoor patio sometimes has the occasional live band or sweaty, happy run clubs gathering for a post-5k drink . Its location also means you can grab food from other places in the market, like Hot Box for pizza and sandwiches, or make a plan for a sit-down Vietnamese feast at The Eaves .

Notch Brewing Company

Remember when everyone was going full send on IPAs? Well, around the same time, the founder of Notch Brewing went in the complete opposite direction to focus on session-style beers. Order their crisp, Czech-style lager and you might even get educated about the nuance of a mlíko pour, which is mostly a bunch of flavorful wet foam. Notch’s Brighton location is spacious, but the indoor area can fill up quickly on weekends—they share the all-season outdoor patio with other small business vendors in the complex. Get some pies from Pizza Project and empanadas from Super Bien , or something from Notch’s own kitchen that’s pumping out flavorful pretzels and German-style sandwiches.

Portico Brewing

East Somerville

Though its taproom is the newest addition to Somerville, the people behind this brewery have been in the craft beer industry for a long time as contract brewers, who make beer or alcoholic beverages for other brands. The location is a bit tucked away behind a chocolate factory, but the space is open and airy, making it great for a group of friends and some board games. Their German-style pilsner is light, crispy, and adeptly hopped, and you can't go wrong with any Belgian blondes like the Fuzzy Logic. You can also get top-notch birria tacos and nachos from Taqueria El Barrio , which has taken up residence in the brewery.

Chicken wings with side of celery sticks and ranch at Trillium Brewing

Trillium Brewing

If you’re visiting Boston, Trillium’s Seaport taproom is the perfect entry point to the brewery scene. For years, it’s been a destination spot that attracts beer fans from all over the city and the state, brewing consistently delicious IPAs and sours since they’ve been open. The Seaport location runs an exceptional food program and has an outdoor patio for the warmer months. If you happen to be in Fenway, there’s a tiny beer garden within walking distance for you to grab a beer before and/or after a Sox game.

Winter Hill Brewing Company image

Winter Hill Brewing Company

Winter Hill

If you work in the neighborhood, Winter Hill Brewing Company is probably where you go to decompress after you clock out. There's trivia on Thursday nights and daily specials that sometimes feature their juicy and crunchy fried chicken. The tap list is IPA-heavy, but they also make crispy kölsch and pilsners that go down easy. The food menu is made up of bar classics with a modern and sometimes global twist, like savory and tangy kimchi latkes, hearty Welsh rarebits, and slightly spicy and delicious curry kale wraps with vindaloo-style cauliflower.

Harpoon Brewery

Seaport District

Founded in 1986, employee-owned Harpoon is the oldest craft brewery in the Boston area. Its flagship Harpoon IPA came out in 1993, at a time when people generally weren’t interested in hoppy beer. Harpoon IPA’s malty, hop-forward, crispy beer was a massive success and contributed to the IPA boom of the early 2000s. While you should still prioritize trying an IPA or two, they also do other styles exceptionally well, like unfiltered, fruit-forward UFO wheat beers that are perfect for summer. You can get a tour of the brewing facility, but you can also just sip a pint in front of the glass windows that look out to the bottling line. There’s not a substantial food menu, but the pretzels made with spent grains are tasty.

Widowmaker Taproom And Kitchen

Widowmaker used to be one of the only craft breweries between Boston and the South Shore. And in the past decade or so, several exciting breweries, like Vitamin Sea in Weymouth and Untold Brewing in Cohasset, have since popped up. Widowmaker now has a location in Brighton, though, where it serves some really excellent noodle bowls and bar snacks by Bone and Bread . Its tap list covers a spectrum of styles, from the hoppiest and haziest IPA to the crispiest lager, with some fruity sours peppered in for good measure. The flagship beer is the Blue Comet, an award-winning hazy IPA that’s well-balanced, thanks to a blend of comet and simcoe hops. The interior of the mid-sized taproom is dark and moody, which seamlessly matches the branding of the brewery.

brewery tours twin cities

Idle Hands Craft Ales

Malden has some of the best food, bars, and breweries outside of the Boston metro area, and Idle Hands is a top drinking and eating destination in the neighborhood. Take the Orange Line 15 minutes from downtown and post up in their medium-sized taproom or patio if it’s nice out. The beer lineup leans heavily on New England-style IPAs, with local and seasonal ingredients prominently featured—one of our favorites is the summer-only blueberry ale that’s tangy, fragrant, and slightly sweet. They also collaborate with food pop-ups, like Sim’s , a Texas barbecue spot with a Korean twist, on some Fridays and Saturdays. Their brisket and pull pork sandwich with kimchi slaw is what you want.

brewery tours twin cities

Mighty Squirrel Brewing Company

Mighty Squirrel started in Waltham, but recently expanded into a glitzy second location in Fenway. The two-story space has ample seating and a full kitchen serving pizzas, tacos, and mulitas—go for the pizzas freshly fired up in the brick oven, and the cheesy mulitas made with corn tortillas. The real reason you're here though is for the beer. We love its signature beer Cloud Candy, a crushable New England-style IPA with tropical fruit notes of papaya and mango. Other standouts include the Mango Lassi, a sour IPA that we (and all of our beer-drinking friends) can’t get enough of.

Night Shift Brewing Lovejoy Wharf image

Night Shift Brewing Lovejoy Wharf

Some roommates dream of founding a startup together, while others simply try to live in peace. The people behind Night Shift Brewing were also roommates, and they opened one of the best breweries in Somerville. They’re most known for hoppy pours like Whirlpool and Santili—the former is thick and fruity, and the latter has the classic characteristics of a hoppy West Coast-style IPA. The Lovejoy Wharf location is right across from TD Garden, and has a beautiful patio that overlooks the waterfront. We love the Detroit-style pizza here, and the fact that the toppings rotate seasonally.

brewery tours twin cities

Roundhead Brewing

Despite only recently opening a taproom in Hyde Park, Roundhead makes this list because they’re the only brewer in the city using Peruvian flavors (like purple corn) for beer-making. They also have a full kitchen doing Latin American dishes like plump and cheesy empanadas and street corn salad. The highlight is the churrasco pizza with crumbled cotija cheese, a housemade chipotle aioli, herby chimichurri sauce, and perfectly charred carne asada.

Aeronaut Brewing Company image

Aeronaut Brewing Company

Porter Square

Aeronaut is located in that part of Union Square that’s filled with industrial-style warehouses. And the taproom is spacious, with two large rooms filled with picnic tables that makes it great for large groups. The beers are hoppy and bold, from the citrusy and fruity IPA called A Year With Dr. Nandu to the refreshing session IPA called Hop Hop & Away. It’s not ideal to come here on trivia nights if you aren’t participating, as it’s crowded and the audio system isn't the best quality. But if you do, the outdoor patio area, with giant murals, is a perfectly fine place to post up Mimi’s Chuka Diner , an amazing gyoza shop, is slated to move into the shared space soon.

Castle Island Brewing South Boston Boston

If hoppy and citrusy IPA-style beers are your go-to, you’ll appreciate Castle Island. Both the limited-release hazy IPA called Vern and the hoppy-but-approachable American-style IPA mainstay Keeper are great. Beyond those, there’s another reason why we love the Southie location: the South Shore-style bar pizza from Bardo’s . Their pies feature super thin and crispy crust and the classic “burnt” edge with cheese flowing right to the tip of it. The taproom is in a charming, warehouse-like building with doors that roll up to a lovely, plant-covered patio.

brewery tours twin cities

Dorchester Brewing Company

This multistory brewery in Dorchester features 20 taplines of beer and cider, as well as wine, hard seltzer, and nonalcoholic beverages. We like the Galaxy Lights, a well-balanced, juicy, and hazy New England-style IPA, and the seasonal sour called Punchbowl, which basically tastes like fermented fruit punch. You’ll always find people who live in the neighborhood hanging out in the space for a night of trivia, arcade games, and sometimes live music. M&M BBQ , a barbecue joint that has taken up residence inside the brewery since 2020, has the best ribs in town, and equally good brisket sandwiches. Also, check out the rooftop patio for the best panorama view of the city.

Local news | could this be julian loscalzo’s final ballpark tour, the former stadium beer vendor, bike-taxi manager and lobbyist at the state capitol has been leading tours for 42 years.

Standing in a bus, holding onto a support rail above him, Julian Loscalzo -- wearing a baseball jersey and a hat -- smiles along with seated passengers.

And every year, Loscalzo — a former stadium beer vendor, sometime bike-taxi manager and lobbyist at the State Capitol for the St. Paul Saints , nonprofits and other groups — fails out of retirement. But at the age of 72, he may mean it this time.

A portrait of Julian Loscalzo.

An Alaska Bus Lines coach bus he’s rented for the occasion picked up 44 baseball fans at the Midway Target parking lot on Tuesday morning and took them to Beloit, Wis. — go Beloit Sky Carp! — for the Tuesday night game against the Lake County Captains.

Then it’s off to Chicago, where the White Sox meet the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday. And then it’s the Red Sox versus the White Sox on Thursday on Chicago’s south side, at Guaranteed Rate Field, the former home of Comiskey Park.

Then it’s back to Wisconsin on Friday to watch the Quad City River Bandits take on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field in Appleton. Yes, there will be fireworks — literal ones.

A love of urban travel

Loscalzo, who has made his home in St. Paul since the mid-1970s, has promised his tour group they’ll roll back into St. Paul’s Midway next weekend. But his sights are already set on his next ballpark tour to Syracuse, Cooperstown and Utica, N.Y., in July.

“We seldom stay out in the suburbs unless we’re on a tight schedule,” said Loscalzo, who has turned his love of urban travel into a side gig across four decades of ballpark hopping, much but not all of it concentrated in the Midwest. “We stayed in downtown Wichita last year. Same with Tulsa. It’s as much a chance to explore the city as the baseball.”

Every other year, he goes big before he goes home, wrangling a few dozen tour-goers on an eight-day tour. About a third of his entourage are retired folks. Most are repeat customers. Sometimes they bring with them their kids or grandkids, who get to experience the family road trip with a baseball family writ large.

He recalls a tour that drew three generations of the same clan. He brought his own grandson with him two years ago to Cooperstown. Travel friendships form. Sometimes they last.

Rolling out for Beloit, Wis.

When Joel Hanson’s aunt died in February, a number of the friends he made over four years of ballpark tours attended the funeral. On Tuesday, he was scheduled to roll out for Benoit with his 73-year-old father and his 42-year-old brother, who would be joining him for the first time.

“My dad’s from Chicago and he used to skip school and go to opening day at Wrigley Field,” said Hanson, 34, of West St. Paul, one of the younger individuals on recent trips. “His mother would write him a note: ‘Please excuse Billy from class as he’s sick today.'”

Of course, not every ballpark is a Wrigley Field.

“We’re tending to see probably twice as many minor league ballparks as major leagues,” Loscalzo said. “They’re as fun. They’re more fun. They’re different, but I think we get more enjoyment out of it because it’s more like Americana. You get to hang out with the players, you get to meet people. They’re always intrigued by a bus load of Minnesotans. If you have a kid with you, the kid gets to throw out the first pitch. People kind of take you under their wing.”

John Reay has been going on Loscalzo’s ballpark tours almost annually since they launched in the early 1980s. He doesn’t consider himself a baseball super-fan as much as a fan of the community that forms on the road. What started out as a bit of a men’s outing has become almost equally co-ed.

“It’s the friendships. It’s the sitting on the bus for seven or eight hours to Chicago. These are friends I get to see every year,” said Reay, 79, of St. Paul. “You come back and you start up right where you left off.”

A man holds a schedule of a tour of ballparks in the Midwest.

Why ballparks?

So why the fixation on ballparks?

Loscalzo, who grew up in working class Philadelphia, one of the only kids in his neighborhood to go to college, lost his father when he was just three months old. His mother poured her love of baseball into him from a young age, but it would take him 20 years or more to make the connection — America’s pastime was her link to her late husband, and an emblem of dad that she could pass on to her son.

He remembers trips to long-gone Connie Mack Stadium in old Shibe Park, and the nosedive the Philadelphia Phillies took in 1964, the year their 10-game losing streak cost them the pennant they had opened the season seemingly destined to win. His mother took him to Game One of that 10-game slide. Yes, baseball can be a game that breaks your heart.

“It does, it does, it does! But it’s a game of people,” Loscalzo said. “It’s a game of history.”

Some of those repeat customers on his ballpark tours are no longer with us. At 72, Loscalzo takes a close read when he learns that a celebrity or local notable his age has passed away. Nothing lasts forever, maybe not even America’s favorite pastime, which has lost ground in popular culture to football and basketball.

So after this summer, he’s hanging up his baseball tour hat for good.

Or maybe not.

“It’s been a tongue-and-cheek statement to people,” Loscalzo said. “It’s kind of a reminder that everyday could be your last.”

Five years after introducing Park View diners to its tasty grandma-style pies on a focaccia-like crust, Sonny’s Pizza is ready to expand for the first time.

Find the stellar square slices at Catboat Pizza Bar , a fun new riverside hangout that made a surprise debut over Memorial Day weekend at Washington Sailing Marina ( 1 Marina Drive, Alexandria, Virginia ). Located 15 minutes from D.C., a quick drive from Old Town, and right off the Mount Vernon trail, the summer-ready spot invites outdoorsy types to pull up by kayak or bike and plop down for a pizza-and-beer picnic for as little as $10.50.

One lager, IPA, stout, wheat, pilsner, and sour joins three natural wines (rosé, red, white), and a growing crop of spiked slushies.

Up in Park View, the retro pizza pad’s rec room-styled dining room carves out room in the back to enjoy its low-intervention wines and large-format bottles of craft beer across a garden patio. Its natural wine and pizza club is a monthly subscription service that includes two, three or four curated bottles, a whole pie, and tasting events.

Sleek sister bar No Kisses sits next door, and the team also runs chill coffee shop and ping-pong club Doubles Cafe in Columbia Heights.

At their first-time Virginia venture, the minimal menu includes cheese, pepperoni, and mushroom slices to start. Catboat plans to expand offerings throughout the season, co-owner Max Zuckerman tells Eater, and a portion of all sales go towards the National Park Service. Opening hours are Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from noon to 9 p.m.

The airy setup with a scenic deck offers lawn games on the grass and views of planes coming in and out of Reagan National Airport. A grand opening is scheduled for June 9, followed by a fireworks watch party on the Fourth of July.
