It was a very different experience from any travel I’ve done before and was a little outside of my normal comfort zone but both the guides and fellow travelers were awesome, very helpful and very patient.

It all started as a dream to go for a gorilla tracking at Bwindi impenetrable forest. My guide Eddie was very incredible as he first briefed me on the itinerary, weather and the culture of the people we were going too before we started on the tour. He gave first hand information answers when ever i asked a question and the meals were very nice. During tracking the game rangers were very informative and helpful when ever we could find difficulties in the dense forest.

My wife and I booked a 16 days (Mid-Range) safari with Paradise Adventure Vacations, and we had a great time on these days. The accommodations were in great locations, and everything went according to plan. The price was the best price we got from 50 (!!) different tour companies (and we had a full board every day). Our driver, Robert Max, made sure that everything will go on the best side, and even more. He was just wonderful; he was our driver, our friend, our guide, our photographer, our everything we needed! We can't be more grateful for all that he has done for us! (I can keep writing about him but I don't think you want 4 pages why he IS the best driver). We really enjoyed Uganda; I guess it is The Pearl of Africa. Comparing Budget Gorilla Trekking in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

The budget gorilla trekking Uganda experience is apparently the best. Bwindi Forest National Park has so many cheap accommodation facilities that you can choose from. A few standard mid-range lodges are also willing to offer their services to budget clients. A gorilla permit costs only $600 in Uganda. This is $900 less than the Rwanda permits fee and $150 higher than Congo’s. The best affordable gorilla experiences are definitely got from Uganda. Bwindi harbors over half the remaining population of mountain gorillas in the world.

There is nothing like budget gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Rwanda officially became a luxury gorilla trekking destination when they doubled their gorilla trekking permits fees in 2017. A permit in Rwanda now costs $1500, an amount that can book you a three-day comfortable gorilla trek in Uganda and even leave you with pocket change. If you feel you must really see Rwanda gorillas, you can still cut down on accommodation and transportation costs.

The situation in Congo is a 50/50. You save on gorilla permits by paying only $450 but spend more on accommodation since they have only top notch safari lodges.

Gorilla trekking is one of the most expensive tour activities in Africa but definitely worth the money. It completely distinguishes you from other travelers.

As a traveler, you crave to see unique stuff and gorillas is one of them. The most famous type of gorilla trekking is mountain gorilla trekking. This can only be done in Uganda and nowhere else in the entire world.

Uganda Gorilla Safaris on a Shoestring Budget

Despite the high cost of gorilla permits in Uganda (costs $700 each all year), you can still go gorilla trekking in Uganda on a budget. You just have to put together a couple of factors if you are to get this right.

Planning a good budget safari to the gorillas is not something you can do on the fly. You have to plan better or consult us to plan it for you. This way, we shall try all means to lowering the total cost of your tour package.

Do not get blinded by booking cheap gorilla safaris else you are unlikely to enjoy your experience. Most budget gorilla trekking safaris are comfortable and enjoyable. Going cheap means using the cheapest facilities and services, which are always faulty to some point.

The budget gorilla safaris we offer are well planned and priced. I would actually say they are highly discounted because we still use mid-range lodges to handle such trips.

As a traveler, there are some things you can do to lower the price of your safari. These include booking a short trip, choosing affordable accommodation facilities, traveling with many other travelers to share common costs like transportation, minimizing on activities, trekking gorillas only once, arriving and departing via Kigali in Rwanda and traveling in the low season when facilities are discounted among other measures.

Gorilla safaris in Uganda take place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorilla permit prices are the same across both national parks. However, if you need a better experience, visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Affordable Gorilla Safaris in Rwanda

Rwanda is not a budget gorilla trekking destination. The gorilla permit prices here are so high that the price of a single permit alone can actually enable you carry out a complete short gorilla safari in Uganda with accommodation, transportation and everything else needed for your trip.

Each Rwanda gorilla permit costs $1500 and $1050 in the high and low seasons (when visiting the other Rwandan national parks) respectively. A 2 days gorilla safari in Uganda costs $1250 per person on a minimum. As you can see, the price of a Rwandan permit is quite higher.

Rwanda only has one gorilla trekking park; Volcanoes National Park. The proximity of this park to Kigali is what makes travelers prefer trekking with gorillas in Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park is only 2 hours away from Kigali. This makes it possible to arrive in Rwanda, trek gorillas and depart on the same day; which is not the case with Uganda. Rwanda provides the most hassle free experience compared to the other gorilla trekking destinations.

The scenery at Volcanoes National Park is also awesome. You get to hike up the Virunga Volcano Mountains as you search for gorillas; which contradicts the experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where you have to traverse forest trails to higher elevations to see gorillas in the wild.

However, like any other destination; there’s always a chance of lowering safari costs. Much as we highly recommend budget gorilla tour clients to trek gorillas in Uganda or DR Congo, we also understand that sometimes they might prefer Rwanda to the other destinations.

So for such a case, minimizing travel days, choose budget accommodation facilities and avoiding other unnecessary activities should help you lower your total safari costs. If possible, try to arrive very early in the morning (like at 0400 hrs), transfer straight to Volcanoes National Park, trek gorillas and depart on the same day. This will help you cut on costs.

Affordable Gorilla Trekking Adventures in Congo

If it wasn’t for the security threats, DR Congo would undoubtedly be the best budget gorilla trekking destination in the world. Congo gorilla permits cost only $400 each, which is apparently the lowest among all the other destinations.

Unlike Uganda and Rwanda, Congo has two species of gorillas; the mountain gorillas and lowland gorillas. Mountain gorillas are found in Virunga National Park in Goma, along the Virunga Conservation Area.

The Virunga Conservation Area is shared by Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. Three national parks; Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (Congo share this area), hence the gorillas are easily switch boundaries and cross through countries depending on their mobility.

Lowland gorillas are found in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in Bukavu, South Kivu province. Mountain gorillas live in higher elevations whereas lowland gorillas live in lower elevated areas.

If you need to hike more, we advise you take on mountain gorilla tracking experiences and in case you do not want to carry out any hiking to see gorillas, you can visit the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. The gorilla permit costs are the same across all parks. The only variation is the entry points.

To trek gorillas in Virunga National Park, you will have to arrive through Kigali in Rwanda and cross over to Goma through the Gisenyi border post. Trekking lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park requires you to travel all the way to Rusizi District; where Nyungwe Forest National Park is located and crossing over to Bukavu.

The journey from the border area around Bukavu to Kahuzi-Biega National Park is approximately 2 hours. Congo is a great place to trek gorillas on a budget. If you need a safe place to trek gorillas in DR Congo, consider visiting the lowland gorillas. The South Kivu province is very secure compared to Goma.

Cheapest way to see gorillas in Uganda

So what is the cheapest way to see gorillas in Uganda? Not everyone can afford a comfortable trip but definitely everyone can trek gorillas. If your budget is so tight and you want to meet mountain gorillas in Uganda, we are still here to help.

We can downgrade your tour package to shoe-string, which is apparently the cheapest way to see gorillas in Africa. As mentioned earlier, there is a big difference between budget gorilla trekking and cheap gorilla trekking.

If you do not mind the facilities and services you are bound to enjoy on your trip, you could look at the cheapest ways to see gorillas in Uganda or any other destination.

Exploring the Benefits of Choosing Budget Gorilla Tours in Rwanda

Choosing Rwanda gorilla tours is not a great idea if your sole aim is trekking gorillas on a budget. Rwanda gorilla permits are too expensive that you could use that money alone to finance a full package trip in Uganda or DR Congo.

Much as tourists prefer trekking with gorillas in Rwanda because of the short distance between Kigali and Volcanoes National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is not equally far from Kigali.

You could actually trek gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which is way much shorter than Bwindi. Only choose Rwanda if you plan to travel luxury. That way, you won’t mind the gorilla permit prices.

Accommodation is a very big factor when it comes to traveling on a budget. Not all gorilla safari lodges offer budget and comfortable facilities.

It takes a lot for an operator to find one and partner with them and also get a second and third option in case the first runs out of availability. For clients trekking gorillas on a budget, give your tour operator a chance to choose an accommodation facility for you.

In most cases, they will choose the one they have a mutual understanding with and offer you comfortable accommodation at highly discounted prices. If you are a budget traveler that is picky when it comes to accommodation, your safari might as well be hard to plan.

Uganda apparently offers the best gorilla tracking experiences. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone has four sectors from where you can trek gorillas. These include Rushaga Sector, Nkuringo Sector, Buhoma Sector and Ruhija Sector.

Unveiling the Physical Demands of Low-Cost Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Uganda offers all levels of gorilla trekking difficulty. It’s up to you to request for the difficulty you want. You could trek the shortest gorilla family or could go for the longest and hardest if you are willing to persevere.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda may last from 2 to 8 hours. Nowadays park wardens locate gorilla groups the day before and guide tourists towards the right direction. This way, the always know which groups are far and which ones are near hence, allocate them accordingly.

If you are going for a longer trek, ensure to have heavy breakfast and carry enough packed lunch, energy snacks, drinks and a first aid kit.

Availability of Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

Uganda being the best destination for gorilla tracking safaris in the world, so many tourists flock here for trips and most of the times, permits are booked way in advance.

Uganda has three seasons of the tourism industry; the low season, high season and peak season. The low season starts from March to May and October through November. The high season starts from June to September whereas the peak season starts from December to January. February is considered to be a high season.

When traveling in the peak season, endeavor to book your gorilla permits at least six months in advance. High season bookings should be made around the same time frame. Low season bookings can be last minute as there is availability always.

If you need a hassle-free gorilla trekking experience, you have to get your packing list right. Some of the necessary items you should carry along as you make your way into the forest to search for gorillas is a rain coat, long jeans or khaki trousers, a first aid kit, energy snacks, cameras or camcorders, sun glasses, a cap, garden gloves and long-sleeved shirts among other items.

These are very essential items for your packing list. You should not forget any as hiking can be strenuous and hectic at times. Good preparation is the very first step to having a successful gorilla trip.

Best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda

Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo share the same climatic region hence, the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda also applies to Rwanda and DR Congo. Any activity that involves hiking can best be done in dry weather conditions and so does gorilla trekking.

Visiting during the driest season will guarantee you a good hike though there is a disadvantage to this. During dry weather, gorillas move for long distances to search for vegetation hence, gorilla trekking can be hard at times. This isn’t the case with the wet season when mountain gorillas can easily find food from where they are hence, making gorilla trekking much easier.

The best time to trek gorillas in Uganda is from June through September and December through February. The worst time to trek gorillas in Uganda is in April.

Best Time to Embark on an Affordable Gorilla Tour in Uganda

The best time to have a budget gorilla safari in Uganda is in April. This is also considered as the month with the highest amount of rainfall. However, Uganda’s climate is funny. Some years will have less rainfall in April and have more in August.

Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda

Trekking both gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda is a great idea. Besides Bwindi Impenetrable National Park being the best gorilla trekking destination in the world, Kibale Forest National Park is also the best chimpanzee trekking destination in the world.

Gorillas and chimpanzees are very close to humans though chimpanzees are closer. Many know Uganda for gorilla tracking and very few recognize it for chimpanzee trekking safaris. Chimpanzees in Uganda are fun to track.

You can find them in Kibale Forest National Park, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Kalinzu Forest, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge and a few other places. When visiting Uganda, do not miss out on chimpanzee trekking experiences.

Minimum age for gorilla tracking

Gorilla trekking has quite a number of rules and among these rules in the minimum age for trekking gorillas. You should be at least 15 years to be granted a gorilla pass. Anyone younger than this will be denied a gorilla permit in Rwanda and DR Congo.

Uganda’s case is however different. You have an option of signing an indemnity form consenting to any liabilities that might arise from your child not following the respective gorilla trekking rules and regulations.

When you sign this form, any kid older than eleven years may be granted a pass.

Is altitude sickness a problem?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park does not have a very high altitude hence, altitude sickness won’t be a problem when trekking gorillas. The same applies to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DR Congo.

On so many occasions, hikers worry about altitude sickness prior to their hike because this is something that will completely put you off your activity. When you get altitude sickness, you cannot go on with your activity and entire trip in the worst scenario.

This is why you should take it serious. Good news is, there is no altitude sickness associated with gorilla tracking.

How to Go Trekking with Gorillas in Uganda

When I moved to eastern Africa, I had an opportunity to experience something that only a handful of people get to do every year: see some gorillas.

And I wasn’t leaving the continent until I did!

Gorilla trekking is one of the most unique things you can do while traveling around Africa. Gorillas are found in eastern Africa on the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and Rwanda. The treks are an amazing experience, but they take some planning, so here are some points to consider when planning yours.  

The Logistics of Choosing a Tour

There are two things to keep in mind when booking a gorilla trekking tour: the permit costs and the cost of the tour itself. All governments require everyone to get a permit to see the gorillas. The normal price for a permit in Uganda is $700 USD. The government of the country where you will schedule your trek issues your permit.

In Rwanda, the gorilla permit fee is now $1,500 USD. However, if you combine trekking in two Rwandan national parks, you’ll get a 30% discount on your permit.

In searching for a tour, I chose to stay away from the DRC because of its complex visa process. Rwanda has a $50 USD visa cost for visitors from most Western countries, while Uganda charges upwards of $50 USD for single-entry and $100 USD for multiple-entry visas valid for 6-12 months or $200 USD valid for 24 months. You can get an East African tourist e-Visa for $101 USD which covers Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda for 3 months.

Most gorilla families are constantly monitored and tracked so tourists can see them, and tourists almost always do, even on shorter three-day tours. On average, tours cost between $500 USD and $950 USD, depending on the tour operator and the size of the group. When you have a larger group, costs go down since you’re able to fill up the transportation vehicle.

When I started reaching out to tour operators, I tried to make sure I chose a tour that had a minimum of four people to keep my costs down. I stayed in contact with several companies that offered me the lowest prices and eventually found a date that fit my schedule perfectly and had four people on the tour.

I chose a tour that offered me the rates below:

• $870 USD for one person going alone on the trip
• $485 USD per person for 2 people
• $375 USD per person for 3 people
• $340 USD per person for 4–6 people

If you’re traveling alone, you may pay an additional $50 USD for a private room. Breakfast and lunch were included in the tour.

I arrived the day before my trek was scheduled just in case there were any last-minute problems and I needed to find another tour operator. But there was nothing to worry about. I paid the tour operator, and we were on our way.

Note: If paying in cash, make sure you bring larger bills that were printed after the year 2000, otherwise no one in Uganda will accept them.

What Country Should You Choose? The DRC was immediately crossed off my list because the visa process is extremely complex and expensive. I just heard from too many people who had significant problems at the border.

There are roughly 720 mountain gorillas left in Central Africa, and half of all gorillas are found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This alone was the main reason why I chose Uganda for my gorilla trek.

I found that since Rwanda and Uganda have nearly the same process for obtaining permits and booking tours, it just came down to price. Since the rates for Rwanda permits are much higher, the total cost of a tour and permits were just cheaper in Uganda.

If you haven’t booked your tour ahead of time, you can fly into the capital city of Kampala and find plenty of tour operators who would love to sell you a package. Remember that a special permit is needed, so it’s better if you purchase a tour as soon as possible so the tour operator can acquire the gorilla trekking permit. They do run out, as there are a limited number of permits available.  

Going Trekking with Gorillas: The Tour Itself

After you spend the night, the next day will all be about gorillas! We woke up at dawn and began our journey into the park, arriving at our outpost around 7:45 am. There was a quick briefing, and then we drove deep inside the Ugandan mountains, where there was a brief orientation. We were given a set of rules stating that the gorillas can approach you, but you can’t approach the gorillas. (Don’t touch wild animals!)

After the orientation, the rangers prepare to search for the gorillas, and you begin your trek into the jungle.

Finding the actual gorillas can take anywhere from one to five hours. It all depends on the gorillas’ movements — and they’re constantly moving. Once the rangers locate the gorillas, you’ll spend roughly an hour or two watching and possibly interacting with them (if you’re lucky) before you head back to the hotel. (If you chose a longer tour, you’ll get to go back again the next day to find more gorillas.)

We were lucky as we found them within 45 minutes. They weren’t hard to spot either, as they were feeding and playing on the edge of the forest near the ranger camp.

I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be inches away from such unique creatures. The gorillas, especially the silverbacks, are incredibly strong and could easily injure a human in seconds. They didn’t fear us at all — they’ll walk right up to you if you’re in their way. (Tip: move out of the way!) There were several times that we walked around to see different silverbacks, and no matter where we were or how we positioned ourselves, they completely ignored us. They were just going about their daily routines while we were busy snapping pictures and videos.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda was one of the most unique and memorable things I’ve done while traveling around the world. If I ever have the opportunity to do this again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.

Day 02: Gorilla trekking In Bwindi Forest National Park

Breakfast; thereafter confirm that you have all the basics; a lunch box (to be provided by the Lodge), raincoat, good hiking boots, waterproof pants + long-sleeved shirt, a pair of strong garden gloves, repellent, a waterproof daypack to carry all your valuables.

Your guide will thereafter transfer you to the briefing point and also help you out through the registration process. After the briefing by a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger, you will embark on your long-awaited Gorilla trekking experience. Return to the lodge and relax.

Day 03: Transfer back to Kigali for your onward travel

Breakfast; and today marks the end of your 03 Day Uganda Gorilla Safari.

Caitlin Clark reacts to controversy after Chennedy Carter's cheap shot

WASHINGTON — After having a few days off for the first time in her rookie season in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark was back Friday, speaking for the first time about the national conversation and controversy that has erupted following Chennedy Carter’s blindside cheap shot nearly a week ago in Indiana’s victory over Chicago. 

“Sometimes it stinks how much the conversation is outside of basketball and not the product on the floor and the amazing players that are on the floor and how good they are for their teams and how great this season has been for women’s basketball,” Clark said in reply to a question from USA TODAY Sports after the Fever’s morning shoot-around before Friday night’s game with the Mystics. 

“I’m not on social media so I don’t see a lot of it but you would be surprised,” she said. “I still have my TV on in my house and I’m watching sports, you’re still aware of it and you still see it. Other than that, my focus is basketball. …

“But, yeah, I try to block it out. I don’t have social media on my phone, I don’t go on it, I don’t see a lot of it. But I don’t really think it’s that different from when I was in college. Everybody is going to have their opinion, everybody is entitled to their own opinion, and that’s just what it is. I think you’ve just got to be focused on what’s in your locker room, what’s in your organization, how your teammates feel, how your coaches feel, and for me that’s my focus but also I have a job to do at the same time so that’s where my focus remains.”

Later Friday, Clark was asked if Carter owed her an apology since her hit was later upgraded to a Flagrant 1.

“You know, no, I mean basketball is competitive, I get it,” Clark said. “Sometimes your emotions get the best of you. Happened to me multiple times throughout the course of my career. People are competitive. It is what it is.”

Clark also praised Carter’s play this year. 

“She’s having a tremendous season. She’s played great basketball in my eyes, probably in first place for sixth player of the year, she’s been great off the bench for them, I think she had, what, 25 here last night and really helped them win the game.”

While Clark and the Fever took a couple of days off in the midst of a four-day layoff after playing 11 games in 20 days, six of them against the league’s three top teams, conversation exploded on social media and sports TV about Carter’s hit on Clark.

“I just love playing basketball,” she said. “This is my job, this is what I’m here for. I’m not here for all the other stuff, that’s not what my teammates are here for either, and that goes for the rest of the teams in the league as well. They want to play basketball, that’s what they’ve been doing their entire lives. They’re really good at it. 

“I’ve come into this league and I’m trying to learn as much as I can too. I’m 22 years old and there’s a lot of expectations on my shoulders and I feel like I’ve grown a lot and I’m going to continue to grow and it’s been a great learning period for myself and allowing myself a lot of grace at times is really hard because I’m a perfectionist and I want to be really good for our organization, for my teammates.”

Through her first 11 professional games, she said, “I’ve done some really good stuff but also I’ve learned a lot too. At the end of the day, basketball is my job and that’s what I want to focus on most.”

Clark, named WNBA Rookie of the Month for May, is fourth in the league in assists per game, 18th in points per game and tied for third in three pointers. In her first 10 games, she scored more than 150 points and had more than 50 rebounds and 50 assists, a feat previously accomplished only by Sabrina Ionescu in WNBA history.
