There’s no denying that smartphones and their handy apps have revolutionized travel. Whether it’s booking flights and hotels, navigating new cities and finding parking, or gaining insight on local attractions, phone apps make many aspects of travel much easier.

To get you ready for your future Canadian holiday, I thought I’d introduce you to some of Canada’s top most useful travel apps.

While you may already have Airbnb, Uber, and Google Translate to help with French speaking regions like Quebec, you may not be aware that there are other incredible apps which are in many cases specifically designed for travelers visiting Canada.

Whether you need a campsite in Banff, want to check the winter ski forecasts, or looking for a Canada mobile casino due to the fact 65% of Canada’s top casinos including Casino Niagara and Casino de Montréal are still closed thanks to COVID, here are ten incredible Canadian travel apps you should download before your trip.

Top 10 Most Useful Canada Travel Apps

Nearly all travelers to Canada are now being urged to download the ArriveCan mobile app to be able to provide the mandatory travel information on and after their entry into Canada as a way to prevent the spread of COVID.

Though in  new Canada travel measures : the COVID-19 test rule does not apply to vaccinated arrivals from 1 April 2022.

While you won’t be denied flight boarding or entry for failing to submit the required information through ArriveCAN , you will be forced to face additional delays at the border for public health questioning and may be subject to enforcement action, so it pays to just download the app and upload the necessary information.

There is potential hefty fines and even possible prison time for travelers who violate health and travel safety instructions or fail to provide accurate information.

The ArriveCAN app allows you to upload your Canadian travel and contact information , your quarantine plan (air travellers are currently required to book a 3-night stay at a government-authorized hotel and are given a trip reference code they are to input in ArriveCAN), and complete daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessments until the completion of your quarantine period or until you report symptoms.

After inputting the required information, a receipt will be emailed to you or you can take a screenshot of your confirmation which you will then need to show to a Canadian border services officer upon entry.

The Canadian government is likely to continue using this app in some form even after border restriction ease, although exact required information may change.

The free version of this outdoor navigation app allows you to create waypoints, GoTo-waypoint-navigation, and create and share routes and waypoints via Facebook, with map layers such as Google Maps available.

Both Canadian residents and visitors love the PayByPhone Parking app as it allows you to search for parking no matter if you’re looking for street parking, secure gated parking, or parking garages.

Better yet is the fact you no longer need to search for spare change for a parking meter or even use your credit card at parking pay stations. You can simply use your phone to pay for your parking.

You can search maps for where you can pay for parking using the PayByPhone app and don’t even need to create an account. There are countless locations around Canada where you can use PayByPhone including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Quebec , Winnipeg, and more.

Not only can you pay for parking with the app, you can also receive notifications of when your parking is due to expire and can extend your parking session remotely from your phone with the app.

Nearly 100 million people have downloaded the GasBuddy app which helps residents of the U.S. and Canada find the cheapest fuel around so you don’t waste any precious dollars of your travel budget.

The app looks at over 150,000 gas stations in North America to let you see where you can fill up for the least amount. You can narrow gas station results to show specific brands such as Shell, Exxon, Marathon, or Sunoco. You can also seek out stations that offer restrooms, car wash facilities, or onsite restaurants.

The app also allows business travellers the ability to log their fuelling stops for tax purposes or getting reimbursed by their company. It also offers tips on how you can become a more fuel-efficient driver and you can enter daily drawing to win free gas vouchers.

My Aurora Forecast

Winter visitors to Canada can not only enjoy skiing and ice skating, they may be able to also witness one of Earth’s most fascinating celestial displays. And the My Aurora Forecast app is the best for helping you witness the northern lights.

The mesmerising colourful display that the northern lights or aurora borealis puts on is a truly memorable experience and can be achieved in Canada with a bit of luck between October and March each year.

You can get forecasts of when the display is expected to occur, with helpful KP index updates which measure the geomagnetic activity over a 3-hour period to give you insight on the likelihood of you seeing the display. The KP index ranges from 0-9, with 5 and above offering the best chances of seeing the lights.

The app will show you the best current locations in your area for viewing the lights based on cloud cover and activity. It will also send you notifications when high aurora activity is expected in your chosen area whether that be Whitehorse in the Yukon or Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

The platform prides itself on connecting you to phenomenal bargains on hotel rooms, rental cars, flights, and more. By keeping close ties with leading travel companies worldwide, Hotwire ensures you get premium services at highly discounted rates, making it your trusty sidekick for affordable adventures.

Here’s how it works: Travel companies often have unbooked rooms, unrented cars, or unfilled plane seats, which they provide to Hotwire at reduced prices. These, in turn, are offered to you as ‘Hot Rates.’ Some deals are what’s called a ‘blind booking,’ a model that reveals the specifics about the hotel or flight only after the booking is complete. While it may add a sprinkle of suspense to your travel planning, the surprise is nearly always a pleasant one.

Want to maximize your savings? Start by setting a flexible travel schedule and checking Hotwire for the cheapest travel dates. Hotwire’s mystery booking model means prices are slashed drastically. But the tradeoff is that you don’t always know the exact details until after you book.

If you don’t mind a little suspense, Hotwire can make your travel dreams a reality, without breaking the bank. This travel app is definitely worth a try.

The 8 best hotel booking apps every traveler should download

Lori Zaino

We all wish we had plenty of time to research and book the perfect hotel , but that's not always the case.

Fortunately, mobile apps can be a quick and convenient way to research and reserve your next hotel stay, especially when you're constantly on the move. If your travel plans have been disrupted or you need a last-minute room, hotel apps can really save the day. You might even get access to exclusive discounts or perks, such as keyless entry or in-app room requests, as well as fast checkout and folio review.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Before you even think about planning your next trip, download some of these hotel booking apps so you can research, book and manage reservations while on the go.

This app allows users to make bookings and view and modify current reservations. You can also use the app to access rewards status and activity (you get one night free for every 10 reservations booked and completed).

Booking reward nights on the website incurs a $5 charge, but this fee won't show up on reward bookings made via the app .

The app also offers a bunch of money-saving features like "Deals for Tonight," which unlocks special savings for last-minute reservations in the area you're searching. Also, be on the lookout for secret prices, shown as "Your Secret Price," on certain hotel listings within the app. These "specially negotiated" rates can save you up to 40% if you use the app, sign up for Hotels.com Rewards or subscribe to the company's emails.

Download for free on iTunes or Google Play .

Marriott Bonvoy

canada travel booking apps

The Marriott Bonvoy app is relatively straightforward and makes it a breeze to book a last-minute Marriott stay with cash or points. Simply open the app, tap "Book" and start searching. If you've already created a Marriott Bonvoy account , all of your information, including saved payment options, will be there waiting to expedite your booking process.

In the app, it's also easy to modify reservations, check balances, see elite qualifying nights and check for free night certificates. Once you click on an already reserved trip, you can quickly see all the amenities the property offers, as well as recommended activities and excursions.

The app clearly shows available promotions and points expiration dates. If any of your reservations are missing, the "Find a Reservation" feature can help. Mobile check-in allows users to notify the hotel of their arrival time and receive a notification when the room is ready. The mobile key option offers keyless entry (where available).

At many hotels, travelers can even use the app to communicate with the front desk and request services such as late checkout, extra towels or a dental kit.

HotelTonight

canada travel booking apps

The HotelTonight app has always been a TPG staff favorite, thanks to its ease of use during spontaneous travels. HotelTonight allows you to book great deals at a range of hotels on the same day (or up to 100 days out in some markets). The best savings will usually be found with last-minute bookings where hotels are trying to fill unsold rooms. If you're trying to book really, really last minute, some hotels on this app let you book until 2 a.m.

Available hotel rooms are siloed into categories like basic, luxe, hip, solid, charming and high-roller so you can get a feel for the style of the property. The app works hard to give you the best last-minute rates, and it's simple to choose a property thanks to the app's easily accessible reviews and photos. Take advantage of the Daily Drop feature, where you swipe to find a personalized deal with a special price only valid for 15 minutes after unlocked.

HT Perks is the app's tiered loyalty program. You can progress video game-style through the different levels by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app. You'll also move forward for hitting different "achievements" milestones (such as booking in five different states) which will help you gain access to cheaper rates and credits for future bookings. Plus, your status never expires, so you can only move up, never back down.

Hilton Honors

canada travel booking apps

Hilton's app has one specific feature that stands out from many other hotel booking apps: the "choose your room" feature. When checking into select properties via the app, you can actually see a map of the hotel layout and tap on the room you'd like to have. This can be especially helpful if you want a high-floor room, prefer to be near the elevator or want a specific view of the ocean, for example. You can also sometimes preorder your favorite pillow type or request snacks and beverages (at an added cost) before arrival using the app. Checking out with a single tap makes your journey home a little less hectic, too. Besides these extras, you can book and manage your trips on the app, as well as view your points balance and elite status.

One feature we love at TPG is the app's digital key feature, which allows guests to skip the front desk visit and head straight to the room (that you hopefully selected!) instead. Also in the app, guests can call Lyfts directly to the hotel or connect to the room to control the TV, lighting and temperature.

Booking.com is one of the most popular websites for reserving hotels and vacation rentals, and its app is just as useful. In addition to its inventory of 28 million properties worldwide, you'll have access to all past, current and future trips offline. (Plus, the app shows the address of hotels in the local language, which can be extremely helpful when showing a taxi driver your address in a foreign country.) With so many available properties, the app is ideal for booking accommodations in more obscure locations. The interface makes it easy to see what's included in your reservation (great for avoiding pesky resort fees ) and if you can cancel without a penalty. Cheaper rates are typically available if you prepay.

Most properties have several reviews on the app, making it easy to see the pros and cons of each property. The so-called Genius loyalty program gives members discounts at many properties around the world, as well as perks such as welcome drinks, free airport transportation and late checkout. Your Genius level and benefits are visible in the profile section of the app.

IHG One Rewards

canada travel booking apps

After IHG totally revamped its rewards program , it updated its app to reflect the changes to the program for the 11 million people who signed up after the launch .

Within the refreshed app, travelers can quickly search for and book rooms across IHG brands like Kimpton, Holiday Inn, InterContinental and Six Senses. Users can search for hotels they've never stayed at before or use the Quick Book feature to snag a room at a favorite property.

Members can also check their account standing to see how many points they've earned (and then use those points to book). They'll also be able to see how they've progressed through the program's various tiers and see how close they are to a Milestone Reward. The app also offers modern-age touches like digital check-in and checkout, the chance to sign up for special offers and the option to see how many points you earned for past stays.

World of Hyatt

canada travel booking apps

Travelers can book more than 900 Hyatt hotels on the World of Hyatt app; they can also manage current trips. Best of all, travelers can use the app to make requests right to the room. TPG reporter Zach Griff used his Hyatt app to request additional amenities during two previous stays. "Both were fulfilled shortly after I submitted them," he said. "The app lets you track the progress of the request, so no need to guess if a phone agent heard you correctly."

The app also features Hyatt Mobile Entry, which is the hotel's version of keyless access to a room (only available at select properties); you'll also have the option to check in via the app and skip the lobby line. Guests can use the app to connect to Chromecast at certain hotels or enjoy a moment of Zen by using the integrated Headspace portion of the app to meditate after a long day of travel.

You can easily track your points progression and elite status in the app, as well as view the benefits of your status. You can use the app to set your room preferences to specific categories — such as a high-floor or accessible room — or upgrade your room. The app makes it simple to contact Hyatt, with options to call the member line, view regional numbers, tweet to or Facebook message the Hyatt Concierge.

canada travel booking apps

Those looking for steeply discounted hotel bookings should use the Expedia app. It comes with exclusive deals you may not find when booking on its website. This includes deals up to 40% off as well as the app-only Expedia Rewards rate of 2 points per dollar.

The account section of the app shows your rewards activity, as well as how close you are to unlocking elite status. When booking, you have the choice to apply your Expedia Rewards points with the swipe of a button.

Besides the ability to book more than 500,000 properties, you can also reserve flights, car rentals, tours and vacation packages from your phone. When reserving hotels, the app states the payment terms (if you're able to book now and pay later or cancel up until a certain date). It also displays a map of the hotel's location and other important details such as hotel amenities and photos.

Your bookings are available for viewing offline, and all hotel addresses are translated into the local language for easier arrival.

Top 16 Canadian Camping Apps

best camping apps for Canada

Just in time to plan your next vacation to Canada, I made up a list of my favourite Canadian camping apps for your smartphone or tablet.

I’m a strong believer in getting away from phones and computers when on holiday. But, there are times when the iPhone or Samsung can come in extremely handy when I’m on the road.

There are many camping apps out there and I suggest you try them out yourself and choose the ones that work best for you. All of these camping apps on this list I use myself at various times of my travels and find them useful for camping trips in Canada. Most Camping Apps are available for both, IOS and Android. Many of the best apps are free to use, some have a free version and a paid version. Using some of these apps will add to your camping experience, I can promise you that.

Also, check out 16 Best Travel Apps for Touring Canada and the article Cell Phones in Canada – What You Need To Know , and How to Find Free Campsites in Canada .

Top 15 Best Canadian Camping Apps

1. alltrails – the best hiking app i ever used.

This is the app I use to find the best hikes in the area and to find my way around outdoors, wherever I am. If you’re a hiker and outdoor lover it is the app you definitely should try. AllTrails gives you detailed reviews and inspiration from a global community of 45 MM plus trail goers. Whether you’re planning a mountain trek or a stroll in the park, this app will take you there.

AllTrails helps you discover new trails and destinations that suit you and it lets you save trails that you want to explore later. Once you’re on the go it navigates to stay on route.

The app is also used as a Health and Fitness app.

There is a free version available as well as an AllTrails+ subscription. You also can sign up for a 30 trial for AllTrail+. The AllTrail+ offers Offline maps, wrong-turn alerts, 3D maps and a Distance Away feature.

2. Learn to Camp with Park Canada

Never been camping? Not sure where to get started?

If you are a newbie and planning a camping trip to Canada’s national parks, then this app is for you!

You will find tips, advice, and all the information you need to plan and enjoy your first camping trip in the big white North. For the already experienced camper, enjoy the camp recipes, checklists, and insider tips.

Learn more about the Park Canada Camping app and where to download it for free.

3. Wikicamps

This is an excellent camping app and is super useful when travelling to new places. It is one of the camping apps you don’t want to be without.

Wikicamps is a user-generated camping app for Canada and is useful when you go camping in Canada . This means people who use the app can enter campsites and other useful information and pictures.

Wikicamps also works offline with the ability to download all site and user content, as well as a high-quality offline map.

You’ll find information about RV parks, roadside rest areas, free and paid campsites (like those in national parks ), points of interest, and how well the campsites are accessible.

The database is constantly growing and always being updated with the latest information about sites from all over Canada.

There’s also an active user forum, where you can ask questions and share experiences with other people who use the app.

The downside of the app is that some people may add incorrect information and coordinates. This happens with many other guides, which is why it pays to have more than one source of information if something doesn’t quite seem right.

4. iOverlander

This is another app you want to have for your Canadian camping trip. It is a database of campsites and many free boondocking places off the beaten track and includes amenities, photos of the campsites, and GPS coordinates. I use this app nearly daily when I’m road-tripping in Canada.

It helps you find the best camping spot with detailed descriptions which is extremely helpful when you’re on the road. You have the option to search the listings or browse on a map!

In addition to finding places, you can add new places, record your trip, and share places with friends or other travellers. All of these features will work offline, except you will not be able to view the map.

5. Campendium

Whether you’re interested in camping at Provincial or Territorial Parks or discovering remote locations off-grid throughout Canada, Campendium will help you with this. Campendium helps you find dump stations and parking lots for an overnight stay on your way to your destination. It’s a great resource for free and paid campsites and the website is well-designed and user-friendly.

If you rely on cell signals, Campendium offers a cell signal report.

From any device, you can access Campendium, but you can also use their app on your iOS or Android.

6. Canadian Red Cross First Aid

Not sure what to do in an emergency? Can’t remember whether you should bandage or splint a suspected fracture?

Then THIS app is for you.

The Canadian Red Cross’s First Aid app will supplement your first aid kit, and tell you what to do if someone is injured out in the backcountry.

It’s one of the suggested camping apps which is easy to use and comes with step-by-step instructions for all common first-aid situations. There’s information on  CPR, treating breaks, bites, stings, burns, allergies, blisters, and more.

As it’s one of the FREE camping apps, there’s no excuse for not having it on your smartphone.

7. Google SkyMap

With the  SkyMap app , you can point your phone into the night sky to identify stars, planets, constellations, and even meteor showers. The app uses your phone’s GPS and compass data to identify the stars you are looking at. Or, if you want to find a particular star or planet, you can search for it, and SkyMap will show you where to move your phone to locate it. You will see, this is pretty cool stuff!

Download the FREE app !

8. Audubon Birds

If you are interested in birds you MUST get this app. I guess if you are a bird lover you probably already have it.

No more carrying field guides around when you’re out on a short walk or if you’re just wondering what bird is calling in the trees above your camp.

The Audubon bird app has pictures, and notes on the appearance, habits, and where the birds are found. It has maps showing the living range and BEST OF ALL: playable bird calls .

The app allows you to search by the physical features of the bird, which is great if you don’t know a Stellar from a House Sparrow. You can also search by name and by taxonomy if you’re a real bird nerd.

The app also allows you to save your sightings to a list, with the date, location, and room for notes.

I even use this app when I’m at home and watch the birds at my feeders. That this app is free surprises me.

Download the FREE app!

9. My Nature Animal Tracks

I’m always excited when I discover animal tracks out in the woods. Unless you studied track reading before, you’re left to guess what tracks you are looking at.

I was up on a mountain with a friend a couple of years ago when we saw cougar tracks in the snow, and deer tracks just next to it. I even got a picture.

The My Nature Animal Tracks lets you easily identify the tracks you come across. Search by track size and shape in seven different illustrated categories to identify over 46 animals across North America.

View actual tracks in the wilderness, reference illustrated gait patterns, range maps, digital images and great photos of each animal featured.

You don’t need a wireless connection once you download the app.

Download the app!

10. Weather Network

Camping can be fun in any weather, rain or shine. It’s all part of the experience. Knowing what to expect and being prepared in case of a change in weather is important.

This is why I suggest the Weather Network app . It also provides you with a long-range forecast.

You can track the weather for different areas which is ideal when you are on the move.

11. Geocaching

If you don’t know what Geocaching is all about, then start by reading my geocaching guide to this addictive high-tech treasure-hunting game that kids and adults love.

You load the GPS coordinates for a geocache onto your handheld GPS or smartphone. Using the provided hints you look for the hidden treasures which are usually hidden in the woods or on a trail. The caches might be in a small box or Tupperware container, packed with souvenirs and a log book.

You sign the log book and register that you have found the cache using the app. And off you go to the next one. Over two million geocaches are hidden all over the world, so finding a few should be fairly easy.

There is a free ‘intro’ version of the app but you can only find four geocaches before you need to download the full version of the app.

I suggest skipping the free intro version of the app and downloading the full version. This game is lots of fun, not only when you go camping.

12. Canada Topo Maps

A list of camping apps wouldn’t be complete without a navigation app.

Although you should not rely on your phone’s GPS for backcountry navigation, this is a good app to have. The app gives you similar mapping options as you might know from Garmin or Magellan GPS handhelds.

Use this navigation app for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, camping, climbing, riding, skiing, canoeing, or off-road 4WD tours. You can preload FREE map data for areas without cell service.

Toporama Maps Canada are the most recent topographic maps of Canada and contain many small trails and 4WD tracks that are missing on other maps.

The free app has various limitations but there is a paid PRO Version available.

  • iPhone/iPad

13. BRMB Maps App

Most Canadians know the beloved Backroad Mapbooks. Now they are available on the go. Get the same maps on your smartphone and download selected areas for offline use. BRMB maps are Canada’s most detailed topographic road and trail maps for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, ATVing, snowmobiling and more! You get an account for both, web maps and the app with Canada wide coverage.

BRMB maps are the most up-to-date, accurate and detailed maps and outdoor recreation guides on the market.

14. Spyglass

This is an app suggested by a reader and is a good one to be added to the list of best camping apps for your camping trip in Canada.

Spyglass is a great navigational toolkit for outdoor navigation. It’s crammed with all that necessary data like GPS coordinates, current azimuth, altitude, speed, potential arrival time to your target and much more. It can read pre-opened maps later when offline and provides you with extremely precise information.

15. Knot Guide

Need to tie a knot? The knot guide will teach you how!

I have always found knots fascinating and used to teach some essential ones during horse camps at my dude ranch.

This app might become your most practical app on your phone.

The knots are categorized and it is easy to find the knot you need. Whether you are looking for the bowline, the barrel hitch, or the butterfly, this app will show you how to do it.

16. Flashlight

The flashlight does exactly what the name describes: it converts your phone into a luminous white screen, which you can use as a flashlight.

It’s simple to use, and I’ve found it very handy on several occasions when a flashlight just hasn’t been within my reach.

You can change the colour of the screen and you can set it as a strobe light if you like that.

  • By rideoncanada

Introduction

Canada is known for its vast landscapes and vibrant cities, and getting around efficiently is essential for residents and tourists alike. With the advent of technology, cab apps have revolutionized transportation, making it easier than ever to book rides and navigate through Canadian cities. In this article, we will explore the best cab apps in Canada, focusing on RideON Canada, a leading platform that offers reliable and convenient transportation services.

The Importance of Cab Apps in Canada

In a country as vast as Canada, having a reliable means of transportation is crucial. Cab apps have become increasingly popular due to their convenience, efficiency, and ease of use. They allow users to book rides with just a few taps on their smartphones, eliminating the hassle of flagging down a taxi or waiting for public transportation. Cab apps also provide real-time updates on driver location, estimated arrival times, and fare estimates, ensuring a smooth and seamless travel experience.

Features to Look for in Cab Apps

When choosing a cab app, it’s essential to consider specific features that contribute to a positive user experience. Some key features to look for include:

1. Easy Booking Process

A user-friendly interface and a streamlined booking process are crucial for a cab app. The app should allow users to enter their pick-up and drop-off locations effortlessly and provide options for selecting vehicle types, such as sedans, SUVs, or shared rides.

2. Extensive Coverage

A reliable cab app should have broad coverage across major cities and regions in Canada. It should be able to connect users with drivers regardless of their location, ensuring accessibility for both urban and rural areas.

3. Competitive Pricing

Affordability is a significant factor when choosing a cab app. Users should have access to transparent pricing structures and fare estimates upfront, allowing them to make informed decisions based on their budget.

Safety is paramount when using any transportation service. Cab apps should implement stringent safety measures, including thorough driver background checks, vehicle inspections, and real-time tracking for enhanced security.

7. User-Friendly Interface

A user-friendly interface enhances the overall experience of using a cab app. Intuitive navigation, clear instructions, and a visually appealing design contribute to a positive user journey.

10 Of The Best Travel Apps For Android That Make Trip Planning A Breeze

T ravel is about as easy as it's ever been. You can hop on a plane, go anywhere, find accommodations once you're there, and even hail a taxi with just a few clicks or taps. Prices can be quite reasonable as long as you're keeping your expectations in check. It's not unusual for folks to take a weekend trip somewhere for no reason other than to just get out of the house. Luckily, there are plenty of good travel apps for Android to help with planning.

A smartphone has plenty of utility in a space like this. You keep it on you all the time, even on airplanes, so it's not a bad place to store your itinerary. People are relying on their smartphones a lot more for travel compared to even just a few years ago. Apps for things like hotels and transportation booking have improved by a large amount over the last five years or so. Additionally, new tools have made their way to the market.

In some cases, you may not even need an app. For instance, Google Travel is an aggregate website that includes flights, hotels, rentals, and discovery features for when you arrive in your destination city. Apps tend to be a little more reliable, though, so let's take a look at some good ones.

Airbnb is a popular travel app that lets you rent out establishments that are usually owned by real people. There are a few benefits to this approach. For starters, it's a vastly different experience than the same old hotel stay that we all know and tolerate. There are also a variety of properties available for rent in most regions, including cabins, beachfront properties, and other interesting accommodations. It's a nice way to spice up your trip without changing your itinerary too much. It's not a leap in logic to assume that a beach trip would be more fun in a beach house rather than a standard hotel.

However, there are some downsides to Airbnb. It's generally more expensive than a traditional hotel stay, especially if you go for something more exotic. For instance, we found a wonderful cabin in Ohio that costs over $700 per day to rent. That's a $2,100 weekend before taking any other expenses into consideration. Additionally, you can find the occasional horror story about owners and tenants causing drama. A little vigilance and some patience can help avoid such complications.

There aren't many apps like Airbnb, although some are trying. They include Vrbo, Booking.com, Hipcamp, and a few others, but none are as established as Airbnb. The app is free to use, but rentals obviously cost money.

Citymapper is a unique app for travelers. It sources its map information from Google Maps, so you're not using something entirely different from what you'd normally use. Where Citymapper excels is in its depth of choice. Let's say you want to go from West Side Market to the Agora Theater in Cleveland, Ohio. Citymapper not only gives you directions but also gives you options for your transportation. You can walk, take the bus, rent a scooter, or hail a cab. There is built-in support for Uber, Lyft, and several other transportation companies for cab service and scooter rentals. There are even bus schedules to help plan your day around local transportation.

Yes, it is possible to recreate a lot of this in Google Maps. However, Citymapper is built specifically for this function, so the layout of the app makes a little more sense for folks who don't often use these types of services. The only real downside of Citymapper is the lack of support for many U.S. cities. For example, in Ohio the app supports Cleveland but not Cincinnati or Columbus. That's a bit of an oversight, although there is always Google Maps to fall back on if you're somewhere without official Citymapper support.

Citymapper is free to use with advertising. You can remove the advertising with a $1.49 per month subscription.

Google Maps

Google Maps is an excellent choice for obvious reasons. It features near-ubiquitous support for most places you'd want to go, a laundry list of features for all sorts of activities, and even competes favorably with Yelp for user reviews. It's a go-to, all-in-one solution that nullifies a lot of its competitors. You can even download maps for offline use if you expect to be out of range of an Internet connection. Otherwise, most people know how Google Maps works. You can get navigation to just about anywhere. There is also support for walking, public transportation, and more.

What makes Google Maps special are a lot of the smaller, less-used features . For example, you can share your location with a friend or family member. They can use Google Maps to find your location and get to you if needed. You can also adjust your routes to save gas and search for the cheapest gas near you. The gas station prices aren't always exactly current, but it gives you a good idea. It'll even show you the speed limit when used with Android Auto. Not every feature is supported everywhere, so your mileage may vary.

Google Maps has a lot of competition in this space, such as Apple Maps. Some alternatives, like Maps.me and OsmAnd, use OpenStreetMap as a source, which can occasionally be more reliable than Google Maps and may also include some extra hiking trails or paths that Maps doesn't. Otherwise, Google Maps stands alone at the top.

Google Translate

Google Translate is another excellent app for travelers. After all, not everybody has the time or capability to learn a new foreign language for each trip they take. Google Translate is good at a number of things. You can easily type in whatever you want into the app and translate it to your language of choice. That's the main function, and it's perfectly usable in day-to-day applications. Other features, however, may see more use in practice, such as the ability of the app to take a picture of a menu or sign and translate it for you.

Perhaps the most useful feature is the conversation mode. You simply choose the languages you want and speak into the app. The app uses speech-to-text to translate what you said so the other party can read it. They can then do the same in reverse. This lets you have full conversations with people who don't speak your language. You can also use the app offline provided that you downloaded the languages you need first.

The great part about it is that it just works without much of a learning curve, so most people should be able to figure this out relatively quickly. Google Translate doesn't have a lot of competition. Microsoft Translator and DeepL Translate are making strides, but they aren't quite there yet.

Kayak is one of many apps to book travel accommodations. It lets you search for flights, hotels, and rental cars for your trip, all within essentially the same experience. For flights, you input your start and end destinations and dates, which leads the app to pull up available flights. There is then a process that sorts them by the cheapest so you can find the best deals. Looking for hotels and rental cards is the same. You input your destination and dates, and the app tries to find you the best deals.

There are some extras that make life a little easier. Kayak's app layout is functional and quite easy to read. Many competitors do this as well, but Kayak just has a good feel. Additionally, you can surf for alternative ideas like ridesharing for car rentals or vacation homes instead of hotel accommodations. There are plenty of filters to nail down exactly what you want. Booking accommodations through the app is a fairly simple process and not much different from most other apps.

Kayak has a ton of competitors in this space, including Priceline, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, and at least a couple dozen others. Choosing one is a lot like choosing a grocery store -- different services have different sales at different times. You should use the one that saves you the most money at the time you plan your trip.

Polarsteps is a travel tracker app, although it is more recreational than it is functional. The app lets you plan your trip and then log the trip as you take it. You can store things like photos, notes, and other memories along your journey. The app shows you all of those memories on a neat world map. It's an overall nice way to visualize your trip after you're done taking it. In addition, you can share your trip with family and friends so they can keep track of you as you progress while commenting on your photos and memories.

The app works quite well in practice. Photos and other content upload quickly, and the social elements are done well. The only real downside of the app is that it is for recreational purposes only. You can't manage an itinerary, book hotels, or do any actual planning with Polarsteps. This is only for capturing memories.

Polarsteps also gives you the option of ordering a travel book with memories of your travels. You can also revisit old trips through the app if you decide to keep it for multiple trips. Polarsteps is free to use. You only have to spend money on the travel book if you want it.

There are many apps that do variations of this same thing. FindPenguins is an up-and-coming app in this space that does a lot of the same stuff as Polarsteps.

TripIt is an all-in-one travel planner. It starts by having you create a trip in the app. From there, you add in your itinerary, travel plans, and other information. Everything is manual, so you don't have to worry about syncing anything. You can enter everything from flight numbers to hotel reservation confirmation numbers. There is also an alerts system for reminders about those flights and hotel reservations. It's a nice overall package that takes most types of travel into consideration. The app has a clean look, and it shouldn't take long to get the gist of how everything works.

There are a variety of other features as well. You can store travel documents like passports, Visas, and driver's licenses. There are whole sections for alternate modes of transportation such as cruise ships, trains, and public transportation. The navigation feature integrates directly with Google Maps for easy storage of your road trip directions. Those who opt for the optional $48.99 per year subscription also get access to a point tracker for your loyalty programs as well as an Inner Circle feature to invite other people to plan trips with you.

Like other travel apps, this one has a lot of competition. RoadTrippers, Passporter, and TripCase are a few decent examples. TripIt does the job better and with less hassle than most of its competitors, so it's a great place to start.

Uber is a must for travelers. It's ubiquitous in the U.S. at least, and almost everybody knows how to use it. It's a ridesharing service that operates similarly to a taxi service -- you hire a driver to take you from point A to point B. There's a rating system for both passengers and drivers to keep everyone honest.

Otherwise, it's a fairly straightforward endeavor. The app is easy to use, and you can schedule rides for the future if needed as well. At this point, Uber has been around long enough that most people have used it at least once. There aren't many surprises here.

Uber has consolidated a lot of its functions within its main app. That means you can order food and have it delivered to your location without using the Uber Eats app. There are also options for pharmacy, alcohol, retail, and grocery delivery. You can even have a driver deliver a package from your location to its destination if you need it there quickly and don't mind paying extra for it. Rounding out the features is a car rental service partnership with Hertz that allows you to rent a car if you prefer.

Uber has competition all around the world. Lyft is its biggest competitor and it's good as a ridesharing service. Other countries may have services specific to that location. You'll want to do some research if you're traveling abroad.

Vio is a hotel deal comparison app. Earlier, we talked about Kayak and how it had tons of competitors in this space. Vio, and apps like it, aggregate prices from many of those places so you can price shop across services in a single spot. The app shows you the best deal it was able to find, even if that deal wasn't directly from Vio, by sourcing prices from over 100 travel sites. The app also boasts millions of hotel options around the world. Pair that with a solid UI that doesn't feel overly cluttered, and you have an app that ends up feeling easy to use.

All you have to do is input your destination city to start browsing. Once you find a hotel you like, you can view more details within the app. From there, there are two things that can happen. You can continue booking the hotel from the app if the deal is directly from Vio. Otherwise, the app throws you to the other service to complete the process. For example, if you find a good deal using Booking.com, the app will send you to that website so you can claim it.

There are a variety of services that do something similar. Trivago is another popular option for comparing hotel prices, and you can use either one as they both work about the same and compare the same data.

Wanderlog is a travel planner app. It offers an all-in-one solution to essentially the entire experience. You can plan the trip by inputting your various reservations, itineraries, and other plans. The app keeps track of everything for easy recall later. In addition, Wanderlog has a ton of little extras that can help make things easier.

For instance, you can compare hotel and flight prices. There is also a collaboration feature that is available for free. You can add people to your trip so they can see all of the information as well. It might seem a bit cluttered at first but it gets easier the more you use it.

In general, Wanderlog is easy to use. There are a lot of distracting elements as the app sends you deals and coupons for various travel-related services. Some of those are genuinely useful, so it's not the biggest deal. The app requires an internet connection to use if you're on the free version. You can get offline support along with Google Maps support, fewer restrictions, and even more deals for an optional $39.99 per month. The subscription isn't necessary unless you intend on using the app very heavily.

What makes this app unique is that it's a mix between an aggregator service like Vio and a travel planner like TripIt. You can find this same experience across two or three apps if you want to.

Going on vacation can be relaxing and a much-needed break from your busy life. However, finding flight tickets that won’t break the bank can often be difficult.

As someone who travels frequently, I always look for cheap flights and deals. I often use multiple flight booking apps to find the best price possible.

But with so many apps for booking flights, how do you know which is the best?

Keep reading for the best apps in Canada for booking cheap flights this year, including Skyscanner, Kayak, and Hopper.

The Best Apps for Cheap Flights

When booking your vacation, you want to get the best deals possible. These are some of the best apps for finding the cheapest flights that can help you save money.

1. Skyscanner

Skyscanner is widely known for being one of the best flight booking apps and websites out there. They search hundreds of providers to find the best deals on flights, hotels, and rental cars.

The best way to save money and find the lowest prices for flights is to enter your destination and select “Cheapest month.” Skyscanner will tell you the cheapest days to fly.

Skyscanner also finds hotels and rental cars with flexible plans and free cancellations, as well as price alerts that notify you when flight prices change.

  • They search through hundreds of flights to find the cheapest travel date and destination
  • You can set price alerts
  • Search for hotels and rental cars through the site
  • Great app for cheap flights
  • Pricing can sometimes be inaccurate or often change
  • The cheapest flights may not be the best options as some flight partners are not reliable

App Store Ratings

4.8 on the iOS app store and 4.7 on the Google Play store .

Hopper is one of the best apps for flight booking, as it helps users save up to 30% on travel bookings. It has exclusive deals, offers, and discount vouchers right on its homepage.

One of Hopper’s top features includes Price Prediction, saving you an average of $65 per trip with a 95% accuracy rate.

Input your travel destination and date, and Hopper will show you the cheapest travel dates. It will advise you whether to book now or wait for a price drop and notify you when the price has dropped.

Another feature is Price Freeze, where you can lock in the price of a travel booking if you need more time. They cover up to $300 in price increases, and you pay a small service fee.

First-time users get a $25 to $50 discount by using the “enocho8pr” referral code when they sign up .

  • Many discounts and deals available for first-time users
  • Price drop and price freeze features
  • Instantly change or cancel your bookings for minimal fees
  • They may not offer the lowest prices possible
  • Some customers reported issues with Price Freeze

4.8 on the iOS app store and 3.9 on the Google Play store.

Kayak is a travel search engine that looks for flights, hotels, rental cars, and flight + hotel combinations from various travel agencies.

To search for cheap flights, enter your destination, departure and return date, and it will show the cheapest and shortest flights for those dates.

Kayak also has a price alert feature, where you can monitor prices and get email updates when they change.

Some other features include a travel itinerary and the ability to search for vacations that fit your budget.

  • Price alert feature
  • Kayak shows you the best deals and flight options
  • All-in-one platform with flight, hotel, and car rental bookings
  • They do not offer a lowest price guarantee
  • You cannot book directly through Kayak

4.7 on the iOS app store and 4.5 on the Google Play store .

4. Google Flights

The Google Flights app and website allow you to search for the cheapest and best flights to your destination.

All you need to do is input your destination and date of travel, and it will show you the best departing flights based on price and convenience.

You can also track prices on a calendar and price graph to find the cheapest departure dates.

  • You can see a month’s worth of flights
  • You are taken to the airline to book directly
  • No designated iOS or Android apps
  • No hotel or rental car bookings or search available

No designated mobile app.

Kiwi is a travel search engine that boasts the ability to find cheap flights that other websites can’t.

You can search for flights, rental cars, and hotels at your destination. To find the best flight deals, simply enter your destination and preferred travel dates.

You can see a pricing table for the month, where the cheapest travel dates are highlighted in green.

With the Kiwi mobile app, you can download your boarding passes, get trip notifications, book with just one click, and get exclusive prices and offers.

  • Flights, accommodation, and rental cars can all be booked on Kiwi
  • Cheaper flights than some other similar websites
  • Not all airlines are included
  • Some people have complained about poor customer service

4.5 on the iOS app store and 4.1 on the Google Play store .

Momondo is a travel search engine that looks through hundreds of options to show you the best and cheapest flights.

Once you input your destination and travel dates, Momondo will come up with the cheapest, best, and quickest flight options.

You can view a graph of the whole month that tells you when flight prices will increase or decrease.

Momondo has a feature called Mix and Match for roundtrip flights, where you can build your own ticket with a different airline upon return to save even more money.

  • Mix and Match feature can save you even more
  • Helpful chart predicting prices
  • No exclusive deals
  • It may not be the cheapest app for booking flights

4.8 on the iOS app store and 4.4 on the Google Play store .

Here are some of the best travel credit cards you can use .

7. Skiplagged

Skiplagged is an innovative way to search for cheap flights. They find loopholes in airline pricing that no other app does.

They find “hidden-city” flights, meaning that you book a flight with a layover, but instead of getting off at the final destination, you’ll get off at the layover. This can sometimes be cheaper than booking a regular airline ticket.

It is perfectly legal, but it is looked down upon as you’re essentially taking away a seat from other travellers. You can book hidden-city flights, but don’t do it too often with the same airline.

  • Cheaper flights than most other flight booking apps
  • You book directly through the app
  • Skiplagged only works for one-way tickets
  • You risk getting caught and banned from the airline if you book too many hidden-city flights
  • You may not be able to collect airline points with these flights

8. Priceline

Priceline is a travel booking app where you can find exclusive hotel deals, rental car discounts, and cheap flights. Everything you need to book is all in one place, and you can get personalized, relevant hotel recommendations.

Priceline has a similar interface to most other travel apps, where you enter your destination and travel date, and they will show you the cheapest and best flights, accommodation, and rental cars.

You can bundle your hotel and flight together for extra savings.

  • Get deals of up to 80% off
  • Book directly on Priceline’s website or mobile app
  • You need to book last minute to get the best deals
  • Many bookings are non-refundable

4.7 on both the iOS and Google Play stores.

image showing apps for booking flights

Omio is a travel agency where you can book train, bus, and flight tickets in Europe, Canada, and the US. It combines and compares the costs from multiple companies to find you the best and cheapest transportation options.

This travel booking app works particularly well for finding cheap bus and train fares in Europe, as per my previous experience.

Omio also covers over 700 ferry routes in Greece, Italy, Spain, and the UK – which no other travel app on this list does.

  • Book directly on the app
  • Your tickets are in one place
  • You may not be able to find cheap options if you book last minute
  • Omio is only available in Canada, the US, and Europe

4.9 on the iOS app store and 4.7 on the Google Play store .

10. Expedia

We’ve probably all heard of Expedia, but if you haven’t, it’s a one-stop shop for everything travel-related. You can book flights, hotel stays, car rentals, vacation packages, and more directly on their website.

Expedia works similarly to other travel booking apps, where you can enter your flight, departure date, and other filters to find the best options.

With Expedia, you don’t get price drop alerts, steep discounts, or see a price chart. However, you can sign in and use airline credits, and all bookings are done through the app.

  • Expedia has last-minute deals and sales
  • Expedia has a loyalty program
  • Cancellation policies can be confusing
  • Pricing may change unexpectedly

4.8 on the iOS app store and 4.5 on the Google Play store.

Here are some other travel apps to consider .

Email Alerts For Cheap Flights

Email alerts are another great way to get notified about cheap flights leaving the airport nearest to you. If you get alerted and act fast, you can save up to 90% on airline tickets!

These are the two best websites for finding out about cheap flights.

11. Scott’s Cheap Flights

With Scott’s Cheap Flights , you can sign up to get email alerts when cheap flights pop up. To customize your email alerts, select the airports near you or the ones you want to see deals from.

Scott’s team of Flight Experts is always monitoring airline fares, so as soon as a deal pops up, you’ll get an email with details about pricing, booking links, and estimates on how long the deal will last.

Scott’s Cheap Flights has 3 membership tiers:

  • Premium – $49/year
  • Elite – $199/year

The free membership plan only shows you international economy deals, while the other tiers show you deals on weekend getaways, mistake fares from airports, business class deals, and more.

12. Dollar Flight Club

Dollar Flight Club is another website that sends email alerts about price drops from the airport closest to you. All you need to do is sign up, select your departure airport, and get alerted when they find flights up to 90% off that are leaving your airport.

They also have a Premium version that shows mistake fares, highly discounted international flights, and domestic deals from up to 4 departure airports.

Best Apps For Cheap Flights FAQs

The day and time of the week generally have no impact on prices; however, some people have found cheaper tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. According to Investopedia , there is no cheapest time or date to book plane tickets.

Skyscanner and Hopper are two of the best flight deals apps where you can find the cheapest tickets. Skyscanner searches hundreds of providers to find you the best deals, while Hopper does the same and provides multiple discounts and price freeze features.

Tuesday is believed to be the cheapest day to book a flight, as airlines sometimes release sales from Monday night or Tuesday morning. However, there isn’t enough evidence to support this, so using an app like Skyscanner to find the cheapest deals is your best option.

Skyscanner goes through hundreds of travel agencies and providers to give you the best and cheapest flight tickets. Their partnerships and software automatically find the best deals.

It depends on your trip and departure date, but some of the cheapest airlines in Canada include Swoop, Flair, Porter, and Air Canada Rouge. However, be aware that some of these airlines are strict about baggage and may charge extra for carry-ons, so check their policies before booking a flight.

It is a common myth that flight prices go up the more you search, but there is nothing to confirm that. Airline ticket prices may go up as seats are filling up or because competitors have adjusted their ticket prices.

Seat Reservations

Like to sit in the front of the bus? Or love a window seat to enjoy the view? Or traveling with family or friends? Now, you can choose your preferred seat when you book your ticket.  If you’d like to choose your seat, a small fee will be charged and will vary based on the route you are taking. All customers will be assigned a seat, but you have the option to choose your preferred seat.

Need some additional room? You can also reserve the seat next to you.

The seat reservation fee varies based on the route. You can find the prices for seat reservations here .

Choose carefully – once a seat is assigned you won’t be able to change it. Your seat number will print on your ticket and that’s the seat you’ll sit in onboard.

How can I reserve a seat?

Reserving a seat is easy. If available, you’ll see the option when you add the passenger name to your booking.

Check the seat map and select your preferred seat(s) from the available options.

Your booking confirmation will include this seat number.

Seat Map on Greyhound

When boarding, seat numbers are above or below the overhead baggage compartment.

Note that on some of our partners’ buses, seat reservations are not available.

If you do not have a seat number on your ticket, follow instructions during boarding. Of course, passengers with limited mobility will be given preferred seating.

Adding, changing, and canceling seat reservations

You may reserve a seat only during initial booking. At this time, you may not add or cancel a seat once you’ve booked your ticket. You may cancel your seat up to 15 minutes prior to departure here  and you will receive a refund in the form of a voucher. Note that you will be assigned a new seat that may be less favorable.

Donald Trump Is Banned from 37 Countries as Convicted Felon, Including Major Allies Like Canada and U.K.

If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

AP Photo/Alex Brandon

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

Win McNamee/Getty

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Countries That Deny Entry to Felons

  • Dominican Republic
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.

The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.
