Due to its close proximity, a visit to Batangas is usually combined with Tagaytay as one of the options for weekend getaways from Manila. Besides, with its varying pristine beaches, delicious food, and stunning views, there are tons of things to do that can fill up your itinerary.

Batangas is a huge province and towns like Calatagan, Nasugbu, Mabini, San Juan, and Tingloy are just one of the many places where you can enjoy its delightful shores and local delights such as lomi, kapeng barako, tapa, etc . To start with, consider any of the below…

If you want to take it a step further, ride over to Sombrero Island to do diving or snorkeling since the marine life is part of the ecosystem that is around Anilao and Verde Island . .

  • Lobo: If you’re still up for some more beaches to check off your list, head over to this southernmost tip of Batangas to visit Malabrigo Beach . It’s a different kind of scene though given that the shore is carpeted with pebbles — but it still makes for quite a sight to see! Nearby you can also check out the Malabrigo Lighthouse. .
  • Calatagan: Facing Verde Island, Calatagan enjoys being a part of the ‘Coral Triangle’; therefore, visitors can enjoy the rich marine life in its waters. It is also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, making it a favorite amongst Filipinos when they want their newly-bought cars to be blessed. Corregidor Island Memorial

Photo from Shutterstock Corregidor is an island situated west of Manila near Manila Bay, and it is part of the municipality of Cavite . It is best known for its huge role back during WWII because given its rocky landscape (earning it the name “The Rock”) and strategic location, it helped form a line of defense against enemy forces to the country.

As such, a lot of visitors who are interested in history (which is akin to a trip to, let’s say, Normandy) would often make this one of their b est weekend getaways from Manila. After all, there are several ruins and memorials set up all over the island in order to brush up your knowledge of World War II — the Malinta Tunnel ‘s 1000-bed hospital area, Japanese Garden of Peace , Mile-Long Barracks , Pacific War Memorial Museum , Filipino Heroes Memorial , and more.

Beyond this, however, you can also enjoy the natural beauty of Corregidor by partaking in a biking trail that will lead you to scenic spots and then end your day afterward with a sunset experience at Battery Grubbs which is one of the 23 batteries on the island that has ‘disappearing’ guns perched on a hill (another option is at the Corregidor Island Lighthouse ). If you rather want to go on foot, you can trek through the Cadena de Amor; it will lead you to the tail of the island that grants you sweeping views of Manila Bay. .

  • Strawberry Farm: Found in La Trinidad, this is a common must-do of tourists where you can basically pick strawberries yourself from the plots for an added fee. Otherwise, you can just buy fresh strawberries per kilo at a price that starts at Php250. .
  • Colors of Stobosa: Just near the strawberry farm is this community project wherein you can find hillside mural houses painted in various colors — a bit similar to the Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan , Korea, but in more vibrant colors. .

Top 12 Long Weekend Destinations from Manila (No Flights Needed)

Top 12 Long Weekend Destinations from Manila (No Flights Needed)

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Being a full-time employee in Manila is no joke. Every single morning, stress (in the form of horrendous traffic) greets you even before you step into the office. Then you spend at least nine hours of your day working your butt off. You end the day enduring another hour or two stuck in a sea of cars. When you get home, you just collapse into your bed because you’re too tired to do anything else. The next day, you repeat the same routine all over again. No wonder we have an undying love for weekends.

But you know what we love more? Long weekends. When a non-working holiday falls just around a weekend, we know it means more time to relax, pamper ourselves, and do the things that we love. One of these: travel.

The best thing about Metro Manila is that no matter how stressful it can be, it is surrounded by countless wonderful provinces. Previously, we wrote about 15 cheap but awesome destinations near Manila . The list covers places that can be reached through a 5-hour drive from the capital, perfect for a regular weekend getaway.

This time, we’re expanding the coverage. Long weekend means more time, and more time means more options. We asked Filipino travel bloggers for recommendations on places that are great for a 3-day getaway, and here are their top picks. (Not in any particular order.)

1. Batangas Road Trip

My personal pick is Batangas. I’m biased, of course, because I was born and raised in the Land of the Valiant. But there’s so much more to Batangas than its proximity to Manila. It is a blessed land. It cradles a wide array of diverse landscapes — pristine beaches, a scenic lake, spectacular diving sites, breathtaking rivers, fertile farm lands, enchanting mountains, and a volcano. These places have also nurtured communities from the pre-Spanish settlements to the rise of the province’s many urban centers in its long history. Thus, it is no surprise that Batangas has a rich culture and heritage, and has become home to some of the country’s most significant national heroes whose roles and legacy cannot be stressed enough.

Batangas is love.

Here are some suggested itineraries:

Batangas Heritage Tour Day 1 – Laiya and Malabrigo Day 2 – Anilao (Day Tour of Sombrero Island and Tingloy) Day 3 – Taal Heritage Town and Calatagan

And if you have more time, you may drop by Tagaytay too! For the full itinerary, take a look at: Budget Travel Guide to Batangas

Where to Stay: Batangas Hotels

2. baler, aurora.

“Baler has flourished as one of the top surfing spots in the Philippines,” Gael Hilotin of The Pinay Solo Backpacker describes the small beach town. “This once sleepy municipality is now a popular tourist destination dappled with resorts, cafes and surf shops that have never stopped expanding. But Baler is not all about the endless surf of Sabang Beach.

best tourist destination near metro manila

Explore Baler and discover its unspoiled waterfalls, ruggedly enchanting azure beaches, gorgeous cliffs that drop straight into ceaseless waves and age-old historic edifices.”

More information here: Baler Travel Guide

Where to Stay: Baler Hotels

3. pangasinan.

best tourist destination near metro manila

For Senyorita Micaela Rodriguez, the answer is definitely Pangasinan. Her beloved hometown has a lot to offer to tired and weary Manileno souls. And yes, who could resist the Hundred Islands?

Mica’s suggested long weekend itinerary is as follows: Day 1 – Dagupan, Calasiao, Lingayen Day 2 – Alaminos Day 3 – Bolinao Day 4 – Back to Manila

For a more detailed version, check out: Alaminos-Bolinao Itinerary

Where to Stay: Pangasinan Hotels

4. puerto galera, oriental mindoro.

One of the islands of Puerto Galera

Solitary Wanderer Aleah made a classic choice, Puerto Galera. “From white sand beaches and mountains, great views above ground and underwater, there are so many things you can do in Puerto Galera that you’ll find yourself not wanting to leave after your vacation is up!” And it’s just 3-4 hours away.

If you have only 3 days and 2 nights, Aleah suggests this itinerary.

Day 1 – Town tour, Tamaraw Falls Day 2 – Swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports Day 3 – Trekking to Aninuan Falls, souvenir shopping

For a more detailed one, check this out: What to Do in Puerto Galera (A 3D/2N Itinerary)

Where to Stay: Puerto Galera Hotels

5. san antonio, zambales.

View from the southern end

Zambales has a lot to offer. Subic remains a good choice for families. Magalawa Island is starting to get noticed. Potipot has always been an open secret. But for Ada Wilkinson of Travel in Boots, “If you’re a student or a young-at-heart working individual living around the busy capital, having a very affordable island hopping trip in San Antonio, Zambales, should be on top of the list.”

Many tourists visiting San Antonio have only one thing in mind when they come: Anawangin Cove, a beach blanketed with ash from Mt. Pinatubo and covered in tall agoho trees (that resemble pine trees). But Nagsasa has become a popular alternative. Nagsasa is bigger and has a much picturesque landscape, albeit a bit farther. Both have ashen beaches and a well-worn trail to a viewpoint that offers a fantastic panoramic view of the coves.

Ada prepared this travel guide to help you plan your trip: Nagsasa and Anawangin Travel Guide

Where to Stay: Zambales Hotels

6. calaguas and mercedes islands, camarines norte.

A post shared by @yoshke & @vinscarlos (@thepoortraveler) on Mar 10, 2017 at 3:18am PST

Peppering the northern coast of Bicol are the virgin, white-fringed islands of Calaguas and Mercedes. Angel Juarez, Lakwatsero himself, has been an ambassador for these islands. “(They are) a merely two hour boat ride from the mainland. It boasts powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and unspoiled natural resources, a place where you can truly relax while enjoying the beauty and serenity of the place.”

Sample Calaguas-Mercedes Itinerary: Day 0 – Departure from Manila Day 1 – Explore Calaguas Islands Day 2 – Explore Mercedes Islands Day 3 – Departure

7. Laguna Loop

A post shared by @yoshke & @vinscarlos (@thepoortraveler) on Sep 2, 2016 at 9:45am PDT

Ron Cruz of Flip’n Travels and Edgar Alan Zeta Yap of Eazy Traveler agree that the best long weekend getaway from Manila is the Laguna Loop, which passes through the towns surrounding Laguna de Bay. “The trail is the cultural center of the colonial era as it has the largest preserved tradition and architecture from the Spanish occupation outside the capital. Start the trip from Angono Rizal and stopping town after town across Baras and Tanay. Cross the provincial border to Siniloan and enjoy the more traditional towns of Pakil, Paete and end the adventure in Pagsanjan.”

More of Ron’s weekend trip suggestions here: 5 Easy Weekend Destinations Outside Manila

When in Pagsanjan, Edgar recommends that you shoot the rapids through Pagsanjan River Gorge National Park to see the famous Pagsanjan Falls, which is already in the municipality of Cavinti. More about that here: Pagsanjan Falls

Where to Stay: Laguna Hotels

8. la union.

Surfing in La Union. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

Nikka Corsino of Two2Travel grew up in La Union and was surprised by the sudden public interest in her province. “We have to credit San Juan for a lot of things,” notes Nikka. “The mounting interest in La Union in recent years, most likely among the economically powerful young-adult demographic, is due to San Juan’s surfing.” But as she discovers, La Union isn’t all about the waves and tides.

Two2Travel has come up with a list of things to do in their hometown: La Union Travel Guide

9. baguio city.

best tourist destination near metro manila

When it comes to quick escapes, Baguio never goes out of style. There’s always something going on in the City of Pines, be it a new restaurant, a new tourist attraction, or just some good old Panagbenga realness. For Owen Ballesteros of Two2Travel, here are some recos that won’t break the bank. “Head to the Panagbenga Park along Loakan Road. Tam-Awan Village and BenCab Museum are also great options for those who want their dose of art. The Baguio Cinematheque, meanwhile, offers indie film screenings at P50.”

10. sagada, mountain province.

best tourist destination near metro manila

Ferdz Decena of Ironwulf has a special place in his heart for the Cordilleras. Sagada and Bontoc, in particular, are two places he had visited many times. “You’ll never get tired of it as there are more to do and discover…. Just lie down on the grass by the church and read a good book. Watch the glorious sunrise on a cool windy morning at Kiltepan or the scenic sunset while having a picnic at Lake Danum.”

While Sagada today is most famous for Sumaguing Caves and Bomod-ok Falls, Ferdz has prepared a more offbeat weekend itinerary:

Day 1 – Transit to Sagada Day 2 – Rock Inn and Lake Danum Day 3 – Pongas Falls Day 4 – Downtown Sagada

More about this here: Sagada Leisure Escape

11. Kalinga

best tourist destination near metro manila

If you could choose just one destination for a long weekend getaway, Mark Julius Estur of Lakwatserong Tsinelas insists that you make it Kalinga. And start in Tinglayan, a municipality where highlanders and prolific rice terraces builders and farmers dwell. Mark’s suggested itinerary involves seeing the fantastic Bugnay Terraces, hiking to Loccong Village, and getting inked by Whang-od, the last traditional Kalinga mambabatok (tattoo artist) in Buscalan.

More about that here: Tinglayan Villages of Kalinga

best tourist destination near metro manila

Vins Carlos of The Poor Traveler thinks he’s saving the best for last: Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. The Ilocos Region is home to the most amazing tourist destinations in the country. “I was pleasantly surprised that even up to now, our trip across Ilocandia remains one of my best trips in the Philippines. Ilocos is pure love.”

Day 0 – Transit (10-12 hours by bus) Day 1 – Paoay Church, La Paz Sand Dunes, Malacanan of the North Day 2 – Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, Bangui Windmills, Pagudpud Day 3 – Vigan

Alaminos is mostly known and recognized because of  Hundred Islands . It is the first protected national park in the Philippines. The national park has 120-ish islands but only three of which have been developed for tourism, Governor Island, Quezon Island, and Children’s Island.

You must need to rent a boat to visit the Islands. The boat prices vary according to the number of passengers, ranging from 20 to 30 USD. Tell your boatmen that you’re planning to swim on these three Islands or if you like less populated island then ask your boatmen for their suggestions. They most likely know the fluctuations of visitors per island.

The things you could do here are swimming, island hopping, beach bumming, zip lining, snorkeling and kayaking.

To go here, you must take a bus (5 to 6-hour trip) from Manila to Alaminos via Pasay Terminal or Cubao Terminal, costing you 8$ for an air-conditioned bus.  After arriving to Alaminos, take a short tricycle ride to Lucap wharf, which only costs a dollar.

WHERE TO STAY IN MANILA

Hotel i’m.

It’s located in Makati and Hotel I’M is very modern just 2 years old. We recommend you  Hotel I’M  as best place for relaxing while staying in Manila. Since the pool area which is quiet and beautiful, to the gym. The food at The Common Good Restaurant is so delicious and you will find all the options as buffet for breakfast and dinner. Western choices and also Asian choices.

Our favorite part of the hotel?  Onsen Spa  is the best Spa in Manila. We enjoyed our massage in the couple room. Before the massage we enjoyed our lemon and pepper tea and we had an hour for our private jacuzzi and sauna. So when the massage is coming you are already totally relaxed.

Everybody knows how busy can be Manila for the traffic, so we consider is the best way to spend your day in Manila. And after the massage you can enjoy a buffet dinner to end your day in the best way.

Apart from the restaurant and the Onsen Spa, there is more that I’M Hotel can offer. In the rooftop you can have an amazing view and sunset. The bar Antidote will offer you the best cocktails and you can see an amazing jellyfish aquarium with lights. The only bar in the Philippines where you can see this!

1. Revisit Old Manila – Historic Metro Manila

Instramuros and Binondo Travel Guide

Manila may get its fair share of negative press, but that wasn’t always the case, especially in its heyday. Why not start off your morning at Kilometer 0?  Rizal Park , more commonly known as Luneta, is considered to be the largest urban park in Asia. Despite being photobombed by the Torre de Manila, it is still a must-see for locals and foreigners alike.   Devote a few hours to  Intramuros , the Walled City, either on foot, by calesa (horse-drawn carriage), or by joining a Bamboo bike tour. These bikes are unique to Asia and beautifully handmade! If you’re interested in a walking tour, there are a handful of people and groups who offer informative and entertaining tours of Intramuros and Old Manila. \

Indulge your inner foodie in Binondo , the oldest Chinatown in the world. Sample delicacies from Dong Bei, Sincerity Café, Masuki Mami, Ying Ying Tea House, and LGA Fastfood Estero among many others. Don’t be afraid to try the many hole-in-the-wall restaurants!   To burn off that big lunch, visit  Binondo Church ,  Cruz Church ,  Quiapo Church,  and even  San Sebastian Church  (the only all-steel church in Asia) by walking around the area. Cap off the day by visiting the  National Museum  (free on Sundays!) to see the Spoliarium and other notable artworks up close.

If you visit just a few of the historic destinations in Metro Manila, then you’ll learn a lot about the history and cultural beginnings of the city. You can also add Manila Bay sunset cruise, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Suggested Tour: The Big Binondo Food Wok

2. Roam around Rizal

best tourist destination near metro manila

For Antipolo, one can’t go wrong by starting the day at Antipolo Cathedral (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage) before proceeding to the famous holy week pilgrimage site, Mystical Cave , which boasts stalactite and stalagmite formations that resemble religious figures.   One need not be a modern and contemporary art connoisseur to enjoy Pinto Art Museum, as the entire space is surely a feast for the eyes. Inside you will find a guided tour schedule as well as Bizu café (although if you’re on a budget, better eat elsewhere). It’s the best arts and culture destination in Metro Manila.

Be pampered with a view of Laguna de Bay and Manila’s skyline at Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa , Antipolo’s nature retreat. Loreland Farm Resort seems to really be the “place to be” with its wide array of offerings: accommodations, swimming pool, team building activities, and spa, all within a lovely green space.

Located inside a private school, PACEM Eco Park aims to raise awareness for the care of the environment and features a butterfly garden, wildlife sanctuary and aviary, herbal garden, organic farm, and greenhouse, as well as a mini-forest.   Roasted cashew nuts are aplenty around Antipolo, and you even have additional variants to choose from – sweet, spicy, adobo. Be sure to eat at one of the restaurants along Sumulong Highway while enjoying the Manila cityscape.

You can also go further to Tanay to take a dip in the cold and refreshing waters of the 14-meter high Daranak Falls . Trekking in Daranak and spelunking in the nearby Calinawan Cave is also recommended for adventure destinations near Metro Manila.   Adventurers can get their fix of adrenaline from trekking, spelunking, swimming, and camping at Daraitan and Tinipak River (Quezon). 3. Antique Metro Manila – Viva Bataan!

10 Weekend Getaways Near Metro Manila

For a military history destination near Metro Manila, visit Samat and go on up Dambana ng Kagitingan , one of the final strongholds of the Filipino and American soldiers before surrendering to the Japanese during World War II. On a clear day, enjoy a panoramic view of Bataan and Corregidor atop the shrine.   Fond of antique houses? You can avail of a day tour at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar where you can walk on cobblestone streets and go inside 50+ manually transported and renovated heritage houses. Overnight accommodation, spa, batis-inspired pool, bicycle, and calesa tours are also available.

Participate in the annual releasing of Pawikan hatchlings off to the sea together with other fun activities in this year’s Pawikan Festival 2015 (tentative November 29-30).   Lots of athletes and fitness enthusiasts go to Bataan to train in cycling because the varied terrain makes it one of the best training destinations near Metro Manila.

4. Scary Metro Manila – Conquering Corregidor!

10 Weekend Getaways Near Metro Manila

This island fortress is known as “The Rock,” is a popular destination for those who only have the weekend to spare. Aside from being the last stand before the Japanese takeover during World War II, it was foremost a military paradise before becoming a seat of the Philippine Commonwealth and headquarters of the Allied Forces.   Although the most popular activity remains the historical tour, you can enjoy a host of other activities on the island such as hiking, kayaking, sunrise/sunset viewing, camping, bird watching, zipline, and night lateral visit of the tunnels.

You can also explore the island onboard an ATV or your own bike. If you’re up for dark tourism, stay overnight and go ghost-hunting with your peers at the Hospital, the site of the Jabidah massacre which took place almost five decades ago. A historical, outdoors, and horror destination near Metro Manila, all in one place – how awesome is that?!

Regular ferries and tours run from the ferry terminal in Pasay City, so if you feel like visiting the city in style, why not find yourself a  5-star hotel in Malate, Manila , where you can also visit the Cultural Center of the Philippines? The Cultural Center, an imposing, modernist, concrete structure, sits on 150 acres of land and includes the  Tanghalang Pambansa (National Theatre) and the Folk Arts Theater among other attractions.   Be sure not to miss the Light and Sound show at Malinta Tunnel.

5. Batangas, the Land of the Valiant

Best Camping Sites in Batangas

Batangas has long been a favorite of weekend warriors and holiday tourists, especially when it comes to beach destinations near Metro Manila. That is why more “unspoiled” beaches are gaining popularity during the past few years due to the proliferation of tourists in the more well-known areas of the province.

Burot Beach is a must-visit in Calatagan with its crystal clear waters, fine sand, and rock formations. One caveat though, is that this beach could be closed at any time, to be developed by one of the prime real estate developers in the country. Better visit soon!

Masasa Beach , located on the fish-shaped island of Maricaban, is within the municipality of Tingloy, Batangas. It is best visited together with Anilao , one of the best diving spots in the country, and Gulugod Baboy .   What was previously a famous luxury resort is now open to the public off the coast of Nasugbu.

Fortune Island is easily recognized because of the Grecian pillars and statues built atop the island. There’s also a museum commemorating the discovery of the MV San Diego Warship. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular activities on the island.   Make sure not to leave without sampling the province’s bulalo, lomi, tapa, and kapeng barako.

Suggested Tour: Diving Experience in Anilao

Gear up for a weekend of eco-adventure at Biak na Bato National Park, aptly named because it is the place where Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo established the first Republic of the Philippines, the Biak-na-Bato Republic. The park, with its cave network and river system, is also a DENR-protected area due to its ecological importance.   Popular attractions include the Aguinaldo Cave, Bahay Paniki Cave, Madlum Cave and River, Tanggapan cave, Tilandong Falls, Hospital Cave, Imbakan Cave, Ambush Cave, Bukal Cave, Bayukbok Cave, and Mt. Manalmon.

Challenging rock formations, hanging bridges, spelunking, camping, river traverse, trekking, bird watching, swimming, and picnicking are what await the adrenaline junkie. The park is best accessed via San Miguel.   There is also an assortment of water parks with various theme attractions around the province that families can enjoy.   Bulacan is also famous for Pastillas de leche, Malolos ensaymada and inipit, sukang Paombong as well as crunchy chicharon. And it’s all only one hour away from Metro Manila!

8. Rediscovering Nueva Ecija – Nature near Metro Manila

Minalungao National Park

Marvel at the towering limestone formations of Minalungao National Park in General Tinio, either by foot or by bamboo raft along Penaranda River. One can also fish, picnic, swim, camp, spelunk, and cliff dive in the park. After spending a few hours beside the river, challenge yourself to climb the 1,000 steps to the summit where a man-made cross is built overlooking the whole area.   If you would like to see more of Nueva Ecija, visit one of the largest reservoirs in Southeast Asia, Pantabangan Dam. Sport-fishing or game-fishing aficionados can get their fix in Pantabangan Lake, while others can hire a boat to tour around the lake. This is clearly your one-stop nature destination near Metro Manila.   You can also add: Gabaldon Falls and Eco Park, and Dupinga River.

9. Pampanga Adventure – Volcanoes and food near Metro Manila!

10 Weekend Getaways Near Metro Manila

Aside from a day hike to Mt. Pinatubo’s crater, foodies will surely love going to the Culinary Capital of the Philippines. Just in Angeles alone, gastronomical delight awaits you in Historic Camalig Restaurant, Aling Lucing’s sisig, Binulo Restaurant, Didi’s Pizza, and 19 Copung Copung to name a few. It’s best to combine all the eating with some walking around Bayanihan Park, Clark Museum, Clark Memorial, and Founder’s residence.

Newbies and experienced wakeboarders alike will find exhilaration at Deca Wakeboard Park .   Try out the new outdoor fun facility at Porac and get your excitement rolling with the Giant Swing, Aerial Walk Challenge, Avatar One (first roller coaster zip line), Adventure Tower, Archery, and ATVs.

Check out the Zooc ride in Zoocobia, the first and only gravity car in the country, and be a kid for the day.   Only 2 hours from Manila, this is a destination near Metro Manila that has pretty much everything!

Suggested Tour: Mt. Pinatubo Hiking Day Tour from Manila

10. Sojourn in Quezon – Festival destination near Metro Manila

Villa Escudero Tiaong Quezon – Memorable Staycation with the Grandparents

Come and celebrate one of the most famous and colorful festivals in the country on May 15th, Pahiyas!   Try spending a day in Dolores at Bangkong Kahoy, a retreat resort midway to the summit of Mt. Banahaw, the province’s sacred mountain.   Experience eating lunch with your feet partially underwater and a man-made waterfalls in front of you at Labasin Waterfalls Restaurant inside the popular plantation and resort, Villa Escudero.

Discover the “unspoiled” beaches of Cagbalete, Puting Buhangin, Borawan, and Dampalitan, and experience camping overnight by the beach.   A trip to Quezon wouldn’t be complete without Pancit Habhab, Chami, Pansit Balibag, Rodillas’ yema cake, and Longganisang Lucban.  Quezon is probably the most unique destination near Metro Manila!

12 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Manila

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Anietra Hamper has traveled throughout Manila and the Philippines experiencing many of the top attractions and things to do off the beaten path.

The busy city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines , is an exciting and energetic metropolis. Hop on board any of the colorful and kitschy jeepneys to get around town. The iconic buses that usually pack in more people than they can hold are the main form of transportation and worth at least one ride during your visit, just for the experience.

A jeepney on a street in Manila

Manila has an eclectic mix of modern attractions and rich history , as evidenced by the many cathedrals and tributes to the city's 16th-century establishment alongside modern-day malls and amenities.

Some of the best places to visit in Manila are the churches, monuments, and impeccably landscaped public parks. Manila is full of restaurants that serve up local fare, including fresh seafood.

The city is a regular target for typhoons, so the best time to visit the Philippines is outside of the rainy season, which is May through November.

But if you want to experience Manila's outdoor attractions fully, take note of the months with the sunniest days.

Holiday Season  | September to December

The best months to go to Manila are during the -ber months of September, October, November, and December, when the city is full of festive lights and Christmas decorations.

It is also cooler during these months, which is great if you’re planning to do a lot of walking around. However, traffic can get worse than usual during the Christmas season. It is also during this time when a lot of people flock to the malls for their holiday shopping.

Dry Season | January to April

If you have a lot of outdoor destinations included in your Manila itinerary, it's best to explore during the dry months of January to April.

While there is rainfall throughout the year in Manila, January to April has the least chance of rain. Make sure to bring water bottles, caps, and an umbrella with you if you're planning to do a lot of walking in Manila.

During the dry season, the temperature in Manila is warm. Take note that the hottest months in Manila, are typically from April to May, with an average daily high temperature above 33°C.

If you plan to visit during these months, always bring a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated while exploring Manila. Additionally, make sure to check for  weather updates and the forecast on the days of your trip.

Here's an overview of the average monthly Manila temperature and rainfall

What to Wear

When visiting Manila, expect a tropical climate. So dress in casual breathable clothes, especially during the dry months. If you're in the malls or outdoors at night, especially during the holiday season or rainy season, it's best to bring a light jacket with you to keep you warm.

How to Get to Manila

Plane landing in Manila airport

Manila is accessible from both international and local destinations by flight. You will be landing in one of the four terminals of  Manila Airport , depending on the airline.

  • Dubai to Manila flights
  • Singapore to Manila flights
  • LAX to Manila flights
  • Cebu to Manila flights
  • Davao to Manila flights
  • Tacloban to Manila flights
  • Iloilo to Manila flights
  • Bacolod to Manila flights
  • Legazpi to Manila flights
  • Boracay to Manila flights
  • Bohol to Manila flights
  • Read our guide on airports in the Philippines

Note that there are four terminals in Manila, which are not connected by subway systems. It can be confusing for many first-time visitors, so make sure to find out which airport you're landing in before making transfer arrangements.

See our popular Manila Transfers

Ninoy aquino international airport (naia) to hotel in pasay | private manila airport transfer (mnl), manila airport (naia) to or from any hotel in makati | private transfer (mnl), ninoy aquino international airport (naia) to hotel in taguig | private manila airport transfer (mnl), getting around manila .

Top view of the intersection at historical EDSA in Manila

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 is located in Parañaque City, while Terminals 2, 3, and 4 are in the neighboring Pasay City.

The metro or subway system does not connect these airport terminals at the moment. The only way to get there and out is via private transport, shuttle buses, or taxis.

There is a free shuttle bus going to all terminals that runs every 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Given the heavy traffic in Manila during the day and early evening, it may not be the best idea if you are pressed for time (e.g., if you have a connecting flight with a layover of less than 4 hours).

You can also take the Airport Loop buses from all terminals. It will take you from the airport to Baclaran, Pasay Rotonda, Taft Avenue station of the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT), and Manila Light Rail Transit System (LRT) in Pasay. Taft Avenue is the closest light rail station to the airport. Both MRT and LRT1 have a Taft Station and are connected with each other by a walkway.

Another option is the P2P (Point-to-Point) buses called the UBE Express. Fares vary depending on your destination. These buses run on four fixed routes, stopping at selected hotels and shopping malls, while other buses stop at big bus terminals. Check the  P2P bus schedules here .

By Taxi/Cabs

All Manila airports have taxi stands. You can ride the following:

Regular Taxi - White metered taxi/cabs with a fixed flag down rate and per kilometer fee.

Coupon Taxi- Blue-marked white taxi/cabs that are dispatched by airport personnel and charge a fixed price

Yellow Airport Taxi - Metered taxi with a fixed flag down rate and per kilometer fee, but almost double than the regular taxis.

Taxi scams at the airport are common. If the driver shows you a printed list of destinations and their corresponding prices, be warned that those rates are most probably overpriced.

Another red flag is when the driver doesn't use a meter and charges you ridiculous prices. To avoid the headache of getting scammed, use the official taxis (coupon taxis and yellow airport taxis).

When someone outside the arrival area offers you a ride, say no. Often, these drivers (or their middlemen) will overcharge you. They might offer to help you with your bags, keep a tight grip on your belongings and say no, or ignore them.

By Car Booking App

Another recommended way to get out of the airport and into the city is through Grab, a ride-hailing app similar to Uber (Uber is no longer operating in the Philippines).

Grab offers GrabTaxi (accredited regular metered taxi), GrabCar (private), and GrabShare (carpooling).  Download the Grab App before arriving in the Philippines in case the airport WiFi fails.

By Car Rental

There are car rental services in Manila that you can avail of, including Manila van rentals ,  SUV rental in the Philippines , and  luxury car rentals in the Philippines . Self-drive car rentals in the Philippines  like budget car rental in the Philippines  are also available in all Manila airports (except Terminal 4). Just make sure you have the requirements to rent a car in the Philippines . You can book a  car rental in Manila in advance so you can pick up the car at the airport or their designated pick-up points in Manila.

If you're driving in Manila, we highly recommend using GPS navigation apps like  Google Maps and  Waze . Traffic in Manila needs a lot of patience and excellent driving skills, so make sure to prepare yourself if you're driving here for the first time.

Public Transportation

Inside the LRT in Manila, Philippines

The fastest way of getting around is via train. Three lines are operating in Manila: Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT1), and Light Rail Transit 2(LRT2). The other modes of transportation are the tricycle and jeepney, both unique to the Philippines.

You can also hail a taxi or use car booking apps or a motorcycle booking app if you want to explore Manila.

MRT and LRT

The Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) run across major roads in Manila and connect Manila's north and south areas. The MRT traverses Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue (EDSA), while LRT1 and LRT2 have routes crossing Pasay, Manila, Caloocan, and Quezon City.

If your hotel is somewhere in the city of Manila, Makati, Pasay, or even Quezon city, you can ride the MRT or LRT. Be warned though, that the MRT and LRT are very crowded during rush hour (7 AM to 9 AM and 5 PM to 9 PM on weekdays).

However, if you travel during the off-peak hours, the MRT and LRT offer the quickest way to slice through Manila's notorious traffic jams.

You can purchase single-journey tickets/cards (one way) or stored value cards (reloadable BEEP cards) in any station in MRT, LRT1, and LRT2. Reloading can be done at any station, as well.

The single-journey tickets are exclusively used in each line where you purchased them, while the reloadable BEEP cards can be used in all three lines. If you'll be riding the MRT and LRT a lot while in Manila, purchasing a BEEP card is highly recommended.

Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit System Map

Source: Light Rail Transit Authority

MRT runs along EDSA, from Taft Avenue to North Avenue in Quezon City. This line gives travelers access to Roxas Boulevard, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City. You can take this line if you want to explore  Makati tourist spots and Quezon City attractions.

LRT1 and LRT2

There are two LRT routes, LRT1 and LRT2. LRT1 is the first among the three light rails in the Philippines, while LRT2 is the newest. A walkway in Doroteo Jose station connects LRT1 and LRT2.

LRT1 runs from Baclaran to Monumento. It lets you explore areas in Roxas Boulevard or Pasay area, Makati, Manila, and Caloocan. Beyond Caloocan are mainly residential areas not frequented by travelers.

LRT1 cuts through most of the city of Manila, which makes it the best transit to ride to get to popular Manila attractions such as Binondo, Intramuros, and Rizal Park.

LRT 2 has the shortest route. It runs through Metro Manila's East to West areas. It starts in Manila and ends in Marikina City, with stops along Quezon City and San Juan City. LRT 2 may be the shortest line, but it can still take you to Manila tourist spots. You can ride the LRT 2 to get to Binondo and San Sebastian Church in Intramuros, which is the only all-metal building in the country.

Jeeneys in front of the Manila City Hall

Jeepneys have become an iconic symbol of Philippine culture and art. These can accommodate up to 20 passengers, depending on the size of the jeepney. Riding these open-aired vehicles in the streets of Manila offers an interesting experience for first-time visitors.

You can hail these anywhere on most Manila roads, but take note if there are designated loading and unloading stations in the area. Each jeepney has a sign on its windshield that indicates its last stop and 1 or 2 other significant stops along its route. Find out first which route you need to take before riding a jeepney.

Payments are handed to the driver at the front during the ride. If you're seated at the far end of the jeepney, the other passengers can pass it to the driver for you.

Locals say "Bayad po, " (Here's my payment) when handing the money to the driver. It is so the driver can compute how much your fare is since it varies on your pick-up point and destination.

When you're about 5 to 10 meters away from your stop, locals will say "Para po!" (Please stop) to notify the driver to slow down and stop at the nearest unloading station.

Motorized tricycles, or simply tricycles, are the local form of the auto-rickshaw similar to Thailand’s tuk-tuk. These public utility vehicles ply a set route in inner roads. They are usually found in terminals where passengers line up to wait for their turn to board one.

These can also be hired like taxis in some areas if their route allows it. Built in a variety of styles that differ from city to city, these are usually made locally by building a sidecar affixed to a motorcycle. These can usually accommodate 2 to 4 passengers only.

Taxi or Car Booking App

For those who only have a short time in the city and want a hassle-free journey, the best option is to take a taxi or book Grab using the  Grab App .

While Grab is usually more expensive than riding jeepneys or buses, these can ensure you can get around safely and in comfort. You don't have to do multiple transfers, which is convenient for travelers coming from and going to the airport.

For a destination as comprehensive as Manila, it can get overwhelming with all the information you need to digest. Before you start planning your Manila trip, take note of these essential practical travel and safety tips for a hassle-free and safe vacation:

Major establishments in Manila accept credit cards. There are also several money changers and ATM throughout Manila. However, it's better to bring enough Philippine Peso (PHP) with you, in smaller bills in 20, 50, and 100 denominations for faster transactions.

Additionally, always carry loose change. They will come in handy when you are riding public transportation or buying food and small items from vendors.

Most Manila locals use Filipino when communicating. The majority of locals can speak and understand English. Make sure to greet the locals with a simple "Hello" to initiate a conversation. Don’t worry, they’re friendly and can accommodate most of your questions.

Watch out for pickpockets when commuting and keep your valuables safe, especially in crowded areas like Cubao, Binondo, and Makati Avenue. If you’re planning to walk alone at night, make sure to keep your bags close to you. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Wear light clothing when going to nature parks, and bring lots of water. It's best to bring a jacket or umbrella with you in case of rain. Don’t forget to bring a small bag when you’re going on a sightseeing trip! It will be more comfortable when you're walking along minor roads, especially if you plan to shop.

The weather in Manila can get quite hot and humid, so be sure to bring drinking water while going around. Although vendors are selling bottled water everywhere, it is best to bring your water bottle to stay hydrated and minimize plastic waste.

Like in most big cities, it’s best not to wear fancy jewelry and carry all your valuables with you when doing  sightseeing trips in Manila . Secure all your essential items and money in anti-theft bags.

Make sure to do some research as well on standard costs of fares and other items. Most Filipinos can speak English. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from locals if you need information on the amount paid for jeepney fares or directions if you get lost.
