Holland America Line will launch a 42-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean and around Europe and the Middle East from Florida next year, inspired by a journey the cruise line took nearly 100 years ago.

The “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” cruise will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 9, 2024, and visit 16 different ports before heading back to Florida, according to the cruise company . The sailing is part of the company’s Legendary Voyages, which are longer cruises ranging from 25 to 59 days.

Travelers who board the company’s Volendam ship will first sail to the Azores before heading over to Tangier, Morocco, and on to Italy and Greece where they will have the opportunity to visit popular cities like Florence, Rome, and Athens. The cruise will then head down to Israel where guests can explore Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before making its way to Egypt and Tunisia.

On its way back to Florida, passengers will stop in Gibraltar, Spain, and Casablanca.

“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”

Holland America said the cruise is inspired by a trip the company took in 1925, which departed from New York City on the Rotterdam IV and sailed to several of the same ports next year’s cruise will visit.

Last year, Holland America celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of heritage cruises , including a special transatlantic cruise that recreated the company’s first sailing by crossing the Atlantic Ocean before the company was even incorporated.

The company is also planning an epic 133-day pole-to-pole Grand Voyage in 2025, which will sail as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

Holland America Line Launches Onboard Credit Offer For AARP Members

Cruise sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to nine countries around the Mediterranean

Seattle, Wash., July 25, 2023  —Holland America Line is adding another  Legendary Voyage  to its diverse roster of lengthier cruises from convenient gateways. The “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” aboard Volendam departing Nov. 9, 2024, was inspired by a voyage the cruise line operated nearly 100 years ago. Perfectly designed for today’s traveler, the 2024 departure sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, allowing guests to experience 16 different ports across nine countries, all without international air.

The original voyage that provided the vision for the “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” departed New York City Feb. 4, 1925, aboard Rotterdam IV and carried just 550 guests across the Atlantic Ocean to explore many of the same ports. The 2024 cruise follows in the footsteps of the 1925 journey, visiting Portugal, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Gibraltar (United Kingdom) and Spain.

“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer, Holland America Line. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”

The “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” route first visits Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. A call at Tangier, Morocco, is followed by overnight visits to both Livorno and Civitavecchia, Italy. From Livorno, guests can explore Florence or Pisa, while Rome is easily accessed from Civitavecchia. Volendam then makes way to Naples, Italy, and Catania, Sicily, before Piraeus (Athens), Greece.

Guests will then explore the Holy Land at Haifa (Tel Aviv) and Ashdod (Jerusalem), Israel, followed by Port Said and Alexandria (Cairo), in Egypt. The final ports on the voyage include La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia; Gibraltar; Cadiz (Seville), Spain: and Casablanca, Morocco. The cruise concludes Dec. 21 at Fort Lauderdale.

What is a ‘Legendary Voyage’? These lengthier cruises, which range from 25 to 59 days, combine the ceremony of Holland America Line’s  Grand Voyages  while focusing on a singular region. They visit some of the most unique ports while offering guests an in-depth exploration. Shipboard programming is specially curated to share insights into the history and culture of the destinations visited.

Most of Holland America Line’s  Legendary Voyages  sail roundtrip or to/from a North American homeport, allowing travelers to see the world from their doorstep with a convenient domestic flight and easy embarkation. The itineraries are offered on a variety of the line’s perfectly sized ships where guests enjoy the “best of” Grand Voyages on-board programming such as iconic theme parties, memorable sailaways and classic cruise activities to further enhance the experience.

Holland America Line will launch 42-day Mediterranean cruise from Florida for under $5,200

42 day cruise from fort lauderdale

If you want to visit the Mediterranean but long-haul flights aren’t your thing, Holland America Line has an alternative.

The cruise line is launching a new Legendary Voyage, the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage, that will take guests to 16 ports in nine countries in 2024 round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The itinerary, which includes stops in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Spain and more, was inspired by a similar 1925 voyage on the line’s Rotterdam IV ship. Paul Grigsby, Holland America’s vice president for deployment and itinerary planning, found a brochure for the cruise as he was rummaging around in his files.

“It's an opportunity for North Americans to really see a full coverage of the Mediterranean in one cruise,” Grigsby said.

When is the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise?

The sailing on the line’s 1,432-passenger Volendam ship will sail between Nov. 9 and Dec. 21, 2024.

Comic-Con at sea: New cruise will set sail in 2025 starting at $990

Where will the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise sail?

The cruise will cross the Atlantic Ocean and make its first stops in Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores in Portugal. Those will be followed by visits to Tangier, Morocco, and overnight stays in Livorno and Civitavecchia in Italy, giving guests more time to explore and offering easy access to Florence or Pisa and Rome, respectively.

From there, the ship continues its tour of Italy, sailing to Naples and Catania before heading to Piraeus, Greece.

Haifa, Israel; Alexandria, Egypt; and Cadiz, Spain – among other destinations – round out the trip before the ship returns to Florida. Holland America is still finalizing programming for the voyage, but plans on offer include a behind-the-scenes excursion at the Vatican and a late departure from Gibraltar, giving guests time for a concert at St. Michael’s Cave.

How much does the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise cost?

The sailing starts at $5,189 per person based on double occupancy for an inside stateroom. The fare includes most food on board, drinks such as regular coffee and tea and more.

The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

14 Best Things To Do In Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Sunny beaches, gondola rides on canals, and plenty of arts, culture, and shopping

42 day cruise from fort lauderdale

What To Do In Fort Lauderdale

Where to eat, where to stay, getting to and around fort lauderdale.

Art Wager/Getty Images

Situated between Miami and Palm Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Fort Lauderdale sometimes gets short shrift when it comes to Florida vacation destinations compared to its glitzier neighbors. One of Florida’s largest cities, it spans 24 miles of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean and stretches inland over the Intracoastal Waterway.

But you don’t need to look very hard to find plenty of reasons to stick around. From sunny beaches to gondola rides on canals, and plenty of arts, culture, and shopping along the way, Fort Lauderdale has proven that it's a destination worthy of your time.

Start At The Riverwalk

You could spend an entire weekend exploring the 22-block Arts and Entertainment District along the city's Riverwalk, which follows the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. In addition to many museums, this area has multiple parks and green spaces, restaurants, and is a lovely place to stroll.

Soak Up The Sun And Sand

With 24 miles of shoreline, you've got to include a little time on the beach while you're in the area. There's a beach here for every type of sun-seeker. Fort Lauderdale Beach is the most popular, and the most crowded. For a quieter experience, Vista Park has beach access with picnic tables and waterfront seating. Las Olas Oceanside Park has a splash pad and an amphitheater. There's even a dog-friendly stretch of sand called Canine Park.

Go Shopping On Las Olas Boulevard

Besides the scenic A1A Highway which runs north to south through the city, Las Olas Boulevard is a main thoroughfare through the heart of downtown, running east to west and offering boutique shopping, art galleries, and dining.

Check Out A Museum

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, head to the Museum of Discovery and Science or the NSU Art Museum , both located downtown. Keep tabs on events happening in two arts districts: MASS District Art Walk is a free outdoor event that runs the last Saturday of every month for 10 years and FAT Village (named for Flagler, Art, and Technology) is four blocks of Fort Lauderdale’s historic warehouse district teeming with creativity.

Head To The Wharf

A popular stop for those headed out on the water for a little daytime cruise is The Wharf , an outdoor spot on Las Olas Boulevard that hosts rotating food trucks, as well as bars, and various pop-up events.

Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery

Find Something For Everyone At A Food Hall

Dining in Fort Lauderdale is a fully multicultural experience that delights the palate. Head to Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery , Fort Lauderdale’s first food hall that opened in 2020, to get a good sampling of some cuisine from around the globe, from sushi to sandwiches, bibimbap to empanadas, in addition to live music events.

Sample Local Seafood

Most restaurants in Fort Lauderdale serve seafood in some form, but you can't go wrong at 15th Street Fisheries , located on the water at Lauderdale Marina. The restaurant has an upstairs dining room that's perfect for a romantic dinner, sunset views included. For a more casual meal, The Fisheries Dockside has an all-day menu, and Aqua Bar offers beer, wine, and cocktails.

Enjoy Jamaican Food

Or go get a little taste of Jamaica at Island in the Pines , dishing out island favorites like brown stew chicken, oxtail, cow foot and beans (best enjoyed accompanied with a bottle of ice cold Ting).

Cool Off With A Cone

At Cleveland’s Old Fashion Ice Cream in Miramar, they’ve been churning out 50 flavors of fresh ice cream for 40 years. If you have a hungry crew with you, order up the Ice Cream Chaffer, which is delivered in a metal handled serving container with eight flavors and all the toppings you can hope for.

Rich Stapleton/The Four Seasons

A Luxury Hotel For Pool Time And Pampering

The Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale opened in March 2022 in an oceanfront location on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard. Unwind at the hotel spa, with treatments designed to mimic the waterways that surround Fort Lauderdale, and swim at the in your choice of two infinity pools. Dine at Evelyn’s Table serving a Eastern Mediterranean/coastal-influenced menu, plus a soon-to-be-opened boulevard-level restaurant.

A Retro-Inspired Stay That's Great For Families

Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort reopened in 2022 following a rebrand. Originally opened as the Escape Hotel in 1949, this property has long been prized by vacationers. With decor that celebrates its retro roots, guests can stretch their way through daily beach yoga classes, and use the Kimpton’s bikes, boogie boards, and children’s beach toys—all included in the daily resort fee.

A Fun Budget-Friendly Option For Adults

Plunge Beach Resort offers a great budget-friendly option in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea , and recently launched new adults-only bungalow accommodations. These exclusive environs include kitchenettes and dining rooms, welcome drinks, and access to a VIP lounge, as well as an adults-only pool and beach area.

Visit Lauderdale

A high-speed rail service , Brightline , operates a station in Fort Lauderdale, zipping passengers from Miami to West Palm Beach (with future expansions planned for Orlando and Tampa).

One of the best ways to explore the city is by water on the city’s 300 miles of navigable waterways. Take a Water Taxi for a guided tour through the town’s legendary mansions and mega yachts—hop on and off throughout the day for $35. Or plan a romantic electric gondola ride —you can bring your own picnic and enjoy watching the sights unfold through Fort Lauderdale’s canals. Airboats and jet skis are even more options for exploring these waterways.
