My cold brew journey began during the pandemic, when every morning felt like a Saturday morning thanks to the luxury of time and many, many homemade batches. An Honest Review ‍

I got the Straight Black and Vanilla cold brew coffee boxes. The Straight Black is hands down my favorite. While I typically drink my coffee milky and sweet, this classic black goes down smooth. It starts off strong and finishes with a chocolatey undertone (and no bitter acidic aftertaste).

Vanilla is typically my least favorite flavor because most vanilla cold brews overpower the coffee with artificial sweetness. I was pleasantly surprised at how light this vanilla flavor is. Just enough to get a whiff of the smell plus a mild and natural vanilla sweetness. 

Taste: 9/10

The caffeine hit me almost instantly. But not the kind that makes you run to the bathroom (IYKYK). You feel it in your heart and mind. It’s strong, yet smooth. The box reads that each 6 oz cup serves up 2 espresso shots. I’d say you maybe feel 1-1.5 shots if you’re a 2 cups a day caffeine-aholic like me. It’s a great sip on it all day, steady-state energy flow, kind of cold brew. I’m also amazed at how long it stays fresh. I went on vacation for a week and came back to coffee just as strong as Day 1.

Caffeine: 8.99/10 The best part of Wandering Bear is its convenience: I roll out of bed and go straight to the fridge for a quick morning pour. This cold brew delivers that coffee shop quality with the push of a button. I love how sleek the box fits into my fridge, too.

If you are new to cold brew, the first thing you will notice when you try Wandering Bear is the amazing flavor (more on that below!).  Cold brew tends to be less bitter, less acidic, with more of a sweet almost fruity, nutty, chocolatey flavor.  There are a number of factors that go into this flavor, but the most notable is the quality of the beans and the roasting process.

Unlike regular hot coffee, which is made by pouring hot water over coffee grounds with a short brew time, cold brew is made by steeping ground coffee beans in water for hours giving it that deep coffee flavor with a smooth taste.  And because more coffee grounds are needed per ounce of water to make cold brew it typically has a higher caffeine count than hot or iced coffee.

I must say that having cold brew on tap is very convenient.  Even before this review, I drank a cup of cold brew coffee every day after lunch.  I started my cold brew journey by making iced coffee (which I later realized is not the same as cold brew) and then tried several cold brew brands at my local grocery store.

Wandering Bear Straight Black Cold Brew

We received a 96oz box of Straight Black Cold Brew from Wandering Bear Coffee.   This box contains 16 6oz servings.  Wandering Bear says that each 6oz glass is equal to 2 espresso shots with 150 mg caffeine.  All Wandering Bear Coffee is made with simple, 100% organic ingredients and contains no sugar or dairy.  In addition, the cold brew boxes are recyclable, just separate the bag from the box.

Compared to your normal cup of Jo brewed at home with between 100-120mg of caffeine, Wandering Bear Coffee cold brew will give you an extra kick. If you are looking for a bigger kick of caffeine Wandering Bear 32oz cartons have 180mg of caffeine per glass and their single-serve cartons have 300 mg per 11 oz carton.

The taste of the Straight Black is smooth, not bitter at all, with a sweet almost fruity flavor followed by a rich nuttiness.  I didn’t find it acidic at all and really enjoyed this cold brew with a splash of creamer.

Wandering Bear Vanilla Cold Brew

The Vanilla Cold Brew on tap is also made with 100% organic ingredients and contains no sugar or dairy.   And like the Straight Black, the Vanilla cold brew has a smooth fruit-forward taste with just a touch of vanilla bean flavor.

Unlike other flavored cold brews that I have tasted, this one didn’t have a fake taste or weird aftertaste.  The vanilla flavor was more vanilla bean than vanilla extract.  It was lovely with a slice of cake.

Wandering Bear Coffee Review

In 2014, two caffeine-fuelled graduate students, Matt and Ben, started a competition to see who could make the tastiest cold brew ( 1 ). Since then, their collective obsession with making strong, smooth cold brew coffee led to the founding of Wandering Bear Coffee. 

So is this cold brew on tap worth the hype? Keep reading to find out.

• Ease of Use

Packaging – 4/5

Except for the 11-ounce single-serve bottles and 32-ounce cartons, the coffee on tap comes in a fully recyclable box, making it one of our most recommended sustainable coffee brands . Even the tap itself is made from sugarcane.

When you’re done with the cold brew, recycling the components is as simple as separating the plastic liner and the cardboard box.

In addition to the traditional nutrition facts, a QR code, and a short blurb about Matt and Ben—Wandering Bear’s co-founders—the packaging prominently features a silhouette of a black bear spread across the top and side of the box.

The color scheme is unassuming—featuring a black bear with a blue shadow and black-and-blue font. But the straightforward, informative copy and the cute bear are more than enough to entice any cold brew connoisseur.

Ease of Use – 4/5

Wandering Bear couldn’t have made untapping their coffee any easier. But you must muster a little courage of your own.

You’ll have to approach the black bear head-on to find the tap and break the seal. Turn the box over so that the bear is facing you. Find the perforated cutout, and pull the sugarcane tap out from inside the box.

To ensure the tap doesn’t slide around, Wandering Bear has placed a few notches on the body of the tap. Moreover, the flap of the box adjacent to the circular cutout fits neatly into those notches, keeping the tap at the proper angle for decanting. Once you break the seal, just press the button and decant it into your glass.

We did notice that the cold brew comes out quite slowly, so it does take a little patience to fill a standard 16-ounce glass. Moreover, once you’re more than three-quarters of the way through the cold brew, you’ll have to balance the tap—via one of those notches—on the edge of the glass, tilt the box with one hand, and press the button with the other.

Unfortunately, this makes for a rather precarious pour. We created a non-slip surface using a dampened paper towel to keep our glass from sliding around our countertop. Once the glass was stable, it took a bit of maneuvering to find just the right angle for the coffee to decant.

Finally, when we were pouring those last drops from the bottom of the bag, we had to take the plastic liner out and coax the coffee into our glass.

Value for Money – 5/5

Wandering Bear’s cold brew coffee drinks come in various flavors and sizes. For this review, we chose the 96-ounce box.

The copy on the side panel says there are 16 six-ounce servings per box. Each six-ounce glass is as strong as two shots of espresso, and at $2.25 per glass, this is an excellent deal. If you drink just one glass of cold brew a day, the 96-ounce box will last you two weeks.

Flavor – 5/5

While having a cold brew on tap is great, it’s what’s inside that counts. And Wandering Bear does not disappoint. Keep reading for some general notes on Wandering Bear’s cold brew, followed by a few notes on the specific types we chose.

First, this cold brew is strong and smooth ; across all three varieties, it is bold without any bitterness. So whether you’re a cold brew connoisseur or just starting your journey, Wandering Bear has struck the perfect balance between a bold, aromatic cup and a smooth one.

Secondly, Wandering Bear uses only 100% organic arabica beans . In line with their commitment to sustainability, they only use beans from sustainable coffee farms and cooperatives throughout Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru.

What’s more, despite having noticeable hints of flavor, all of Wandering Bear’s coffees are sugar-free. And because all their cold brew coffee is dairy-free, you can add any dairy substitute you prefer.

Finally, while each of the three flavors we tried was excellent, if you’re looking for the pure, Wandering Bear experience, we’d suggest going with the Straight Black cold brew.

The first variant we untapped was vanilla. To our surprise, the ingredients list was very straightforward: filtered water, organic coffee beans from Peru, and natural organic flavor. Unfortunately, because there was a small tear in the corner of the plastic liner, we had to transfer it to another container.

But despite that minor hiccup, this flavor was genuinely delightful. Wandering Bear describes this variety as “Coffee forward with subtle hints of vanilla,” which was very accurate in our experience.

The aroma was very reminiscent of a fresh-baked vanilla cupcake. As you sip, hints of cream and marshmallows are very apparent.

As with the previous flavor, this flavor was “coffee forward with subtle hints of mocha.” The ingredients list was the same as the vanilla variety.

This time, everything went as expected. After pulling the spout out of the circular cutout and moving the other flap out of the way, we could decant as per Wandering Bear’s instructions.

Unlike the vanilla variety above, the cold mocha brew was bolder in aroma and flavor. The aroma reminded us of baker’s chocolate and caramel, while a pecan-like nuttiness and a slight hint of brightness came through in the taste.

Overall, we enjoyed the mocha more than the vanilla flavor because the slight nuttiness and the chocolate aroma were a much more natural pairing for Wandering Bear’s base Peruvian cold brew.

Straight Black Cold Brew

Finally, we’ve saved the best for last. Wandering Bear notes that this cold brew is “Coffee forward, extra strong, and surprisingly smooth.” And this time, the ingredients list is even simpler: filtered water and 100% organic Peruvian arabica coffee.

Though we love mocha and vanilla, we were looking forward to tasting Wandering Bear’s Straight Black because it’d give us the best gauge of their coffee quality. And honestly, it was, hands-down, our favorite.

Many cold brew coffees have a muddled flavor profile with very few subtle notes. But Wandering Bear’s Straight Black cold brew coffee has an aroma that is sweet and buttery, like a pie crust, with a subtle note of plum. As with the other cold brews, the Straight Black was smooth with no lingering smoky or bitter notes.

There was a subtle caramelized sweetness—somewhere between honey, caramel, and molasses.

While there weren’t too many citrus or stone fruit notes, there was still a subtle hint of brightness to keep the cup from becoming too heavy. To our palates, it lay somewhere between green apple and fresh strawberry, which made this a very well-balanced, smooth cup.

While you could add in milk, flavored syrups, or use it to make a nice pumpkin spice latte, this cold brew is smooth enough to drink on its own.

Do not Buy Wandering Bear’s Cold Brew Coffee If…

• You’re on a tight budget: While Wandering Bear’s coffees are a great value for the money, they’re still more expensive than making your own cold brew . In making cold brew from scratch, you’re in full control of the types of coffee beans you use and can stick to the single-origins or high-quality blends you prefer. • If you like a brighter, more nuanced cup: Because cold brew is steeped cold, many of the more nuanced flavors you’d traditionally expect in the final cup—such as floral and spice notes, which often require heat—don’t come out in the final cup.
• If you are sensitive to caffeine: Wandering bear often describes its cold brew as “strong and smooth.” With the amount of caffeine in Wandering Bear coffee , you can expect that it does pack quite a punch. Each six-ounce glass is equivalent to two shots of espresso, and if you consume coffee like water, then these caffeinated cold brews might not be the best choice. And because Wandering Bear’s coffees are so smooth, that’s very easy. Trust us; we’ve been there and have the T-shirt. Instead, we recommend Wandering Bear’s, Decaf Black. Whether you enjoy it straight or with a splash of cream, their decaf cold brew lets you enjoy as much cold brew as you like without the jitters ( 3 ).

The Verdict

If you’re looking for a smooth, strong, organic, sugar-free, and dairy-free cold brew, then any of Wandering Bear’s great selections are well worth the money.

I Tried Wandering Bear Coffee and Here’s What Happened

The promise of a convenient, coffee-shop quality brew right from my fridge was too good to pass up.

Ordering (or Attempting To)

With high hopes and a serious need for caffeine, I ventured onto their website, ready to place my order. But unfortunately, the Coconut flavor was nowhere to be found on the site. The dream of tropical coffee bliss was starting to seem more like a mirage.

After reaching out to customer service, they informed me that their seasonal flavors tend to sell out quickly – a testament to their popularity, but a disappointment for latecomers like myself, especially since they were running an ad campaign.

But I wasn’t ready to abandon ship just yet.

 I decided to go with their Black Iced Coffee, hoping it could at least fill the void left by the elusive Coconut flavor. And oh boy, did it deliver!

Tasting the Coffee

Upon tasting it, the richness and depth of flavor were instantly noticeable. The smoothness was reminiscent of the cold brew from my favorite coffee shop, and it was certainly stronger than the coffee I whip up with my Nespresso. 

This wasn’t just some off-the-shelf iced coffee; this was a high-quality brew that could hold its own.

Aside from the remarkable taste, the convenience of having this box in my fridge cannot be overstated. With a whopping 16 cups in each box, I found myself set for a good while. 

And the price tag?

 At $28.99 per box, each 16 oz pour works out to be just $1.81 – way cheaper than a trip to the coffee shop where I’m paying over $4 for a cup of cold brew.

So, despite the initial setback with the Coconut flavor, Wandering Bear’s Black Iced Coffee has proven to be a worthy addition to my fridge , promising a quick, delicious start to my busy mornings.

Black bear scampers across Haverhill backyard

HAVERHILL, MASS. (WHDH) - Haverhill police are telling residents to beware of a black bear spotted in the city Monday morning.

Some people who live in the area said they are on high alert after officers issued a safety warning.

“I told my wife, ‘Hey, there’s a bear outside.’ She just thought I was joking and I was like, ‘No really, there’s a bear,'” John Yannalfo said.

Yannalfo said he was startled when he saw the bear scamper across his yard around 9 a.m. Monday.

Police shared a photo of the bear to sound the alarm on social media after receiving several calls about the wandering black bear.

“I’ve been here since ’95 and I’ve never seen a bear,” Yannalfo said.

Police are asking residents to remove outdoor bird feeders and secure any chickens or small livestock. Residents are also asked to secure all garbage, pet food, and livestock food, and keep dogs on leashes. They also should not feed pets outside.

Police also warned that if you see the bear, you should not approach it, try to feed it, or stop to take photos or videos. Most bears will leave people alone, police said, but should you encounter one — do not run. Instead, make yourself look as big as possible and make as much noise as you can.

If you spot the bear, you do not need to contact law enforcement, police said. However, if you have any sort of bear-related emergency, as always, call 911.

Meanwhile, Yannalfo said he’ll be on high alert, even switching up some of his habits, at least for now.

“I just wanted to go barbeque tonight and I’m like, ‘I wonder if the smell is going to attract the bear,'” he said.

Wildlife officials are aware of the bear and animal control was on the scene earlier Monday trying to track it.

Camera catches young bear wandering through Charlotte backyard

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Video shows a bear wandering through neighborhoods in Charlotte and Huntersville over the weekend.

"Some people find that stuff cool. I'm going to steer clear from bears," Becca McGhee told area ABC affiliate WSOC.

McGhee is worried the bear might attack someone or go after neighborhood pets.

"It's a little scary ... especially depending on the nature of your dog," she said.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said it has received several calls in recent days from people reporting a bear sighting.

The bear does not appear to be an adult. It has been seen for several days roaming neighborhoods between Charlotte and Huntersville.

NC Wildlife said it's important for people to:

• Never feed or approach bears
• Secure food, garbage and recycling
• Remove bird feeders when bears are active
• Never leave pet food outdoors
• Clean and store grills and smokers
• Alert neighbors to bear activity.

Florida Black Bear alert: What to do if you see wandering yearlings in unlikely places

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has put out a press statement reminding us that juvenile black bears might be seen in unexpected areas as they leave their mothers’ home ranges in search of new locations of their own to settle down.

Spring, an FWC spokesperson said in a press release, also marks a general increase in activity for bears after limited movements in winter.

Juvenile or yearling bears, between the ages of 1½ and 2½, start wandering on their own in spring and summer each year, according to FWC Bear Management Program Coordinator Mike Orlando.

During this time of year, black bear sightings increase in suburban and urban areas throughout north and central Florida, even in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and other heavily populated areas across the state.

Note: Seeing a bear in a neighborhood is not necessarily cause for alarm. But that doesn't mean you should take a selfie with one. Never try this.

That weekend snack lounging outside or barbecue? Don't leave clean-up for later. You should secure food so that bears do not linger in the area.

Bears, some zoologists say, have the best sense of smell of any animal on earth.

Remember these three things if you see a bear in an unexpected place: Give them plenty of space, don't approach them, and don't feed them.

They will typically move along on their own.

What makes you vulnerable to a bear attack?

Black bears are not generally aggressive, but like any wild animal, if they feel threatened, can become defensive.

Feeding bears can make them lose their natural fear of people. It is also illegal in Florida to intentionally feed bears or leave out food or garbage that will attract bears.

According to the FWC, dogs have been involved in over half of the incidents of people being injured by bears in Florida. When walking dogs, keep them close to you — ideally on a non-retractable leash –— and be aware of your surroundings, which is good practice for preventing conflicts with any wildlife.

Before letting your dog out at night in your yard, flip lights on and off and bang on the door to give bears and other wildlife a chance to leave the area.

As bears become more active this time of year, they cross more roadways. For your own safety and to avoid hitting bears and other wildlife, remember to slow down when driving, particularly on rural highways at dawn or dusk. Watch for road signs identifying bear crossing areas.

Each year in Florida, an average of 300 bears are killed after being hit by vehicles.

If you have bears in your area, follow these BearWise tips to help prevent conflicts with bears:

Store garbage in a sturdy shed or garage and then put it out on the morning of pickup rather than the night before. If you don't have a shelter for your refuse, secure commercial garbage in bear-resistant dumpsters or use a bear-resistant container. Or, consider taking your waste to a county facility.

Protect gardens, beehives, compost and livestock with electric fencing.

Pick ripe fruit from trees and bushes and remove fallen fruit from the ground.

Remove or secure bird and wildlife feeders, and never leave pet food outdoors.

Clean and degrease grills and smokers after each use. If mobile, store them in a secure shed or garage.

If you see a bear, let your neighbors know, and share tips on how to avoid conflicts with bears.

Encourage your homeowner’s association or local government to institute bylaws or ordinances to require trash be kept secure.

If you spot an injured, orphaned or dead bear, feel threatened by a bear, or to report someone who is either harming bears or intentionally feeding them, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Crime and public safety | bear sighted in lafayette neighborhood thursday morning.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife are responding to a bear in the area of Lavender Hill Lane after it was spotted wandering through residential areas.

According to a post on X by Lafayette police , the bear was first reported near 2300 Indian Peaks Trail and then later on Lavender Hill Lane. Animal control contacted CPW, which is attempting to locate the bear. They will then monitor it as it wanders to a safer location or relocate the bear if needed, according to the post.

Police reminded locals that in the case that a bear comes near a home, residents should do their best to haze the bear away. Hazing can include yelling, blowing an air horn, activating a car alarm or making other loud noises. The public should never approach or corner a bear, the police wrote.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A two-year-old bear was expected to be OK after it fell from the top limbs of a tree in Salt Lake City.

The bear was found in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood on Wednesday morning, prompting a street closure and warnings from police for people to keep their pets indoors.

Wildlife officials effectively tranquilized the bear, which was perched between 15 - 20 feet off the ground in large cottonwood tree in the area of 300 West and Reed Avenue. However, a device that was supposed to catch the fainting animal was not in place, and the bear instead fell onto the pavement.

It was immediately transported from the scene for evaluation, police said.

According to authorities with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, it's not unusual for bears to fall from trees, and the bear's fall may have been broken somewhat by a lower tree limb.

What is unusual, though, is that the bear was in the neighborhood to begin with. Despite the area's adjacency to the Wasatch Mountains and its wilderness, its not common to see bears wandering so far into residential areas.

The neighborhood where it was tranquilized is located about a mile away from from City Creek Canyon.

Scott Root, public information officer for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said the area, or even Salt Lake City as a whole, rarely has bear sightings.

"We get peacocks, we get rabbits, we get stuff like that," he said. "But nothing quite this big."

He said the bear likely was looking for water or food, noting the nearby hills were "yellow and dry."

No other bear sightings were reported Wednesday.

Black bears are the only bear species in Utah, and they inhabit much of the state. DWR has previously said that encounters with bears often rise in drought years when their natural and water sources are running low.

If you encounter a bear, experts advise staying calm, standing your ground. Running away or climbing a tree is not recommended. Black bears can run up to 35 mph and, as demonstrated Wednesday, they are excellent tree climbers.

Authorities planned to relocate the bear to a more central area of the state.

Giant pandas are coming back to the National Zoo in Washington

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute announced on Wednesday it will welcome a new pair of giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao to the Zoo by the end of the year. This comes months after the zoo returned three bears, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Xiao Qi Ji, to China.

Bao Li (BOW-lee) is a 2-year-old male. His mother Bao Bao was born at the institute in 2013 and his grandparents Tian Tian and Mei Xiang lived at National Zoo from 2000 to 2023. Qing Bao (ching-BOW) is a 2-year-old female born to Qing Qing and her mother Jia Mei.

China's Wildlife Conservation Association announced in February that it was working with the National Zoo on arrangements that could bring more pandas back to the U.S., including the San Diego Zoo.

Giant pandas are icons in Washington, D.C. For more than five decades, the National Zoo has created and maintained one of the world’s foremost giant panda conservation programs, helping move the panda from “endangered” to “vulnerable” on the global list of species at risk of extinction.

Central China, home to the only natural habitat for giant pandas, owns most of the world's giant pandas. According to the World Wildlife Foundation , 1,864 pandas are alive today.

Pandas have been a symbol of diplomacy between the U.S. and China since 1972 when China gifted a pair to the National Zoo in Washington. Lending pandas to zoos across the U.S. and other countries also encourages reproduction and helps save the giant pandas from extinction.

Four zoos in the U.S. have hosted pandas since 1972.

Zoos that host pandas outside China usually agree to send cubs back before they turn 4 and send adults back when they are elderly.

San Diego Zoo receiving giant pandas

The San Diego Zoo is preparing to receive Yun Chuan and Xin Bao. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet with the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the giant pandas.

Yun Chuan is a nearly 5-year-old male panda. He is described as mild-mannered, gentle and lovable. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao. Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female giant panda who was born in Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base. She is described as a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears. The date of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao’s arrival in San Diego is not yet known.

A tranquilized black bear takes a dive from a tree, falls into a waiting tarp

A young black bear took a dive from a tree Tuesday, landing in a giant tarp held aloft by a group of wildlife, public safety and rescue officials who tranquilized it after it roamed into a suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood.

CAMP HILL, Pa. (AP) — A young black bear took a dive from a tree Tuesday, landing in a giant tarp held aloft by a group of wildlife, public safety and rescue officials who tranquilized it after it roamed into a suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood.

The bruin showed up around lunchtime in a residential area of Camp Hill, outside the capital of Harrisburg. Students and staff of a nearby high school were notified to stay indoors, and a stretch of road was closed, Pennlive.com reported.

Fire and rescue officials used a ladder truck to get close to and tranquilize the bear. The sedated animal fell about 20 feet (6 meters) into a large blue tarp held up by several wildlife officials, police and firefighters. The animal was tranquilized again, then moved to a bear trap that had been placed on a trailer, the news outlet reported.

The bear did not seem to be fully grown, and game officials said they would likely take it to state land elsewhere in central Pennsylvania, according to the report. The Associated Press left a message with the Game Commission seeking details.
