Trip itinerary, arrival in kathmandu.

After your arrival in Kathmandu, a representative from Himalayan Glacier will pick you up from the airport and drop you off at your hotel. There will be a group discussion followed by trip preparation during late afternoon at Himalayan Glacier’s office. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Accommodation

Sightseeing in kathmandu.

Today you visit some of the notable attractions from around Kathmandu valley with a guided tour to four of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the medieval Kings who ruled over the then Kathmandu Kingdom whereas Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingum, or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The Aryaghat alongside Pashupati and on the banks of the Bagmati River is a famous funeral site for the Hindus. Next up is Buddhist shrine of Bouddhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, and one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Kathmandu.  The area of Bouddhanath is also famous for over 50 Tibetan Gompas or monasteries. You tour for the day concludes with the visit of Swoyambhu temple. Swoyambhu meaning the “the self-existent” is popular among the foreigners as the ‘Monkey Temple’ owing to the large number of monkey population residing in the area. Overnight at Kathmandu.

Transfer to Lumbini

You start early and drive to Lumbini – about 205km south-west from Kathmandu which will take about 8-10 hours. You leave the valley and enter the Terai plains whereby you can notice the sudden surge in the temperature as it gets hot and humid (except in winter). You then reach the legendary place where one of history’s greatest and most revered figure, Siddhartha Gautam was born. If you make it to Lumbini by evening or around sunset, you can stroll around the local market and observe the local lifestyle around there. Overnight at Lumbini.

Travel Distance:

Sightseeing of lumbini and kapilavastu.

The holy site of Lumbini, also enlisted within the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, holds immense archaeological and religious importance. It comprises of ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi Tree, an ancient bathing pond, the Ashok Pillar (erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC on the spot of Buddha’s birth which also bears the oldest inscription of Nepal) and the Maya Devi temple. Maya Devi temple is the spiritual heart of Lumbini which marks the spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautam. From early morning to early evening, pilgrims from various countries perform chanting and meditation at the site. You also visit the museum, peace pagoda and spend your day exploring the area and its temples, monuments and ancient sites soaking up the serene ambience.

From there you drive about 29km west of Lumbini, and reach Tilaurakot, the historical site of Kapilavastu, where Siddhartha Gautam spent the first 29 years of his life. The site sits in a peaceful meadow on the banks of the Banganga River. The showy shrine nearby with several carved pachyderms is dedicated to Maya Devi. There’s a small museum at the final turn-off to Tilaurakot that displays some of the artefacts found at the site. After you’ve visited the place, you drive back to Lumbini. Overnight in Lumbini.

Transfer from Lumbini via Sunauli to Kushinagar sightseeing in Kushinagar

You drive from Lumbini towards Sunauli, the most popular tourist border crossing between Nepal and India and head towards Kushinagar. After nearly 4 hours drive you reach Kushinagar which is one of the four main pilgrimage sites marking Buddha’s life where Lord Buddha breathed his last. Here you can find several peaceful modern temples and stupas including three main historical sights: Ramabhar Stupa, Mahaparinirvana Temple and Mathakuar Temple. The half-ruined, 15m high Ramabhar Stupa is where Buddha’s body is said to have been cremated where monks and pilgrims can often be seen meditating and searching whereas Mahaparinirvana temple is well-known for its serene 5 th century reclining Buddha, unearthed in 1876. It depicts Buddha on his ancient death-bed and is one of the world’s most moving Buddhist icons where scores of devotees pay homage and seek nirvana. Set among monastery ruins, Mathaukar Temple marks the spot where Buddha made his final sermon and now houses a 3m-tall blue-stone Buddha statue. Buddha museum, Tibetan temple, Japan-Sri Lanka Buddhist meditation centre are other notable attractions around here. Overnight in Kushinagar.

*Note: Multiple-entry visas are available at the immigration post just across the border. You will need two recent passport photos and USD. The border is open 24 hours but closes to vehicles at 10pm.

Transfer to Patna

There are no direct flights or trains between Kushinagar to Patna. You will be taking a taxi from Kushinagar to Deoria then take Vaishali Express train (daily superfast train service) from Deoria to Sonepur. You will travel 2 Tier or 3 Tier AC Class where air condition, 2 tiers or 3 tiers of padded benches, clean sheet/pillow/blanket are provided. Carriage doors are locked at night (so people do not wander through the carriages) where you will have much more seating space during the day and be with higher class Indians who are generally more quiet and reserved. Once in Sonepur, you take a taxi from there and drive to Patna. Overnight in Patna.

Transfer to Bodhgaya

You board a taxi and travel to Bodhgaya from Patna which is almost 2 hours drive. Patna to Bodhgaya route encompasses of sights that gives away the true impression of India’s countryside. Once in Bodhgaya, you check in your respective hotel and rest for the day. You can stroll around the streets and local shops around Bodhgaya in the evening. Overnight in Bodhgaya.

Sightseeing in Bodhgaya

Bodhgaya is the quintessence of Buddhist pilgrimage where Prince Gautam is believed to have attained enlightenment beneath a Bodhi tree and became Buddha. A beautiful temple in the garden setting marks the spot and a descendent of that original bodhi tree flourishes here, its roots embedded in the same soil as its celebrated ancestor. The exact spot is now marked by the magnificent Mahabodhi Temple (World Heritage Site), where Buddha attained enlightened and formulated his philosophy of life and now forms the spiritual heart of Bodhgaya. Topped by a 50m pyramidal spire, the ornate structure houses a 2m high gilded image of a seated Buddha.

Another major attraction is the towering 80 foot statue of Lord Buddha. Bodhgaya also has an Archaeological Museum displaying an interesting array of relics, scriptures, and ancient statues of Buddha. Many monasteries and temples dot the bucolic landscape built in their national styles by foreign Buddhist communities. Overnight in Bodhgaya.

Detour to Nalanda, o/n in Bodhgaya

Today you visit the extensive ruins of the ancient centre for higher learning and an important Buddhist centre in Nalanda. You drive for about 2 hours in the morning and reach there. The Buddhist University of Nalanda, once the most prestigious centre of learning in Asia, continues to draw people from around the world. When Chinese scholar and traveller Xuan Zang visited sometime between 685 and 762 AD, 10,000 monks and students lived here studying theology, astronomy, metaphysics, medicine and philosophy. The red-brick ruins consist of nine monasteries and four main temples. Most impressive is the Great Stupa, with steps, terraces, a few intact votive stupas and monks’ cells. Across from the entrance is the archaeological museum housing the Nalanda University seal and a host of sculptures and bronzes unearthed from Nalanda and Rajgir. About 2km further on is the huge Xuan Zang Memorial Hall, built by the Chinese as a peace pagoda in honour of the famous Chinese traveller who studied and taught for some years at Nalanda. You return back to Bodhgaya in the evening. Overnight in Bodhgaya.

Transfer to Varanasi

After breakfast, you take a taxi from Bodhgaya and travel overland for almost 5 hours to Varanasi, the City of Temples. Most of the journey is along the modern highway paralleling the old Grand Trunk Road, which is one of the better roads in India. You check in your hotel and rest for the day. You are free to stroll around the exotic and colorful city of Varanasi in the evening. Right from the ancient times, Varanasi has stood as a symbol of Hindu renaissance and preserved the rituals and tradition of Hindu philosophy. Overnight in Varanasi.

Visiting of Sarnath and back Varanasi

Situated about 10 km from the holy city of Varanasi, you drive to Sarnath in the morning. Buddha came to Sarnath to preach his message of the middle way to nirvana after he achieved enlightenment at Bodhgaya and gave his famous first sermon here. Set in a peaceful park of monastery ruins is the impressive 34m Dhamekh stupa, which marks the spot where Buddha preached his first sermon. Nearby is a 3 rd century BC Ashoka Pillar with an edict engraved on it. The large ruined Chaukhandi Stupa marks the spot where Buddha met his first disciples. Mulgandha Kuti Bihar where Buddha’s first sermon is chanted daily, deer park and archeological museum are other highlights from Sarnath. Drive back and overnight in Varanasi.

TOP DESTINATIONS INCLUDED IN BODH GAYA PILGRIMAGE TOUR IN INDIA

Bodhi Tree : Prince Siddharth Gautam was empathetic and could not bear to see the sufferings of the beings so that he went on a quest to find peace. During this quest, he reached Gaya and did meditation under a Pipal (Ficus) tree situated near the Phalgu River banks, and then he was awakened to enlightenment. ‘Bodhi’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Awakened’/ ‘Enlightened’. And hence that Pipal tree was called the bodhi tree. The Bodhi Tree which stands in Gaya today is a direct descendent of the actual Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha was awakened.

Mahabodhi Temple: A declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, The Mahabodhi temple is built in the place where Lord Buddha attained his enlightenment. And hence, this temple is also referred to as the ‘Great Awakening Temple’. Built-in 260 BC by Ashoka the Great when he was visiting Gaya, this temple was originally constructed from bricks. Over this period, the temple has been revived and reconstructed and enlarged leading to the present sprawling 4.8 hectares of Temple. The Bodhi tree is situated on the left of the Mahabodhi Temple.

Muchalinda Lake: Also referred to as the ‘Lotus Pond’, the Muchalinda Lake is situated on the right of the Mahabodhi temple. At the center of the lake is a statue of a coiled snake upon which Lord Buddha is meditating and the hood of the snake is protecting the lord. There is the lore behind this statue that while Lord Buddha was meditating near the lake, once there was a strong storm, and the king of the snakes i.e. Muchalinda protected him.

Vishnupad Temple : A demon named Gaya i.e. Gayasura was once suppressed by Lord Vishnu pressed his foot on to him and buried him inside the earth. An imprint of the foot of Vishnu was thus left behind on solid rock in this place. Later on, a temple was built housing the 40cm long footprint. That temple is the Vishnupad Temple, where ‘Vishnupad’ translates to ‘Vishnu feet’. The footprint of Lord Vishnu here is surrounded by a silver basin.

Thai Monastery: Showcasing traditional Thai architecture, this is the one and only Thai Monastery in all of India. Pertaining permission from the then prime minister, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Thai Monastery was built in 1956 by the Monarch of Thailand. This Monastery has gold tiles for the roof and has a Bronze Buddha statue. It is surrounded by a garden and even the garden holds a 25m high Buddha statue.

Bodhgaya Multimedia Museum: This Multimedia Museum makes use of multimedia and animation to show the life of revered Gautam Buddha from his childhood till the time he attained Nirvana. It also explains Buddha’s teachings.

Tibetan Refugee Market: For all the spiritual souls who visit Bodh Gaya, if they wish to take some souvenirs back home, this is the place to shop at. Other than souvenirs, there are all types of textiles and woolen wears along with handicrafts available here.

Nirvana – School Of Thai Massage And Yoga: Nirvana along with offering professional training in Clinical and Traditional Thai massage, offers therapeutic services so that one can avail their services for traditional Thai massage for the body to be relaxed, to lose fatigue, or even help with bodily pains.

Burmese Vihar Monastery: As the name speaks, the Burmese Vihar Monastery is a monastery showcasing traditional Burmese architecture. This Monastery is a spiritual retreat, surrounded by lush gardens and has a Meditation hall along with a guest house and a library.

Vietnamese Temple: The most recent addition to the various temples, the Vietnamese Temple is an example of Vietnamese architecture and stands to show Vietnamese Buddhism. This temple is built jointly by the Vietnamese and Indian government and houses Avalokiteshvara Buddha i.e. a smiling Buddha statue.

Chinese Temple: This Temple houses Lord Buddha’s statue in its inner sanctum and showcases great Chinese artwork and architecture. This temple was constructed by Buddhist Monks.

Royal Bhutan Monastery: Dedicated to Lord Buddha, the monastery is named so, because it was constructed by the King of Bhutan. The inner walls of the monastery depict clay carvings which show the various aspects related to Buddhism.

Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple: Built in association with the International Buddhist communities, this temple looks like a Japanese shrine. Displaying a number of Japanese paintings that depict the life of Lord Buddha, this temple is an example of marvelous Japanese architecture.

Great Buddha Statue: Carved out from red granite and sandstone, is the statue of Lord Buddha in Dhyana mudra, sitting upon a giant lotus. This 64 ft high statue was built in 1989 by the 14th Dalai Lama and is possibly India’s tallest statue. This statue is situated within the Daijokyo Buddhist Temple.

Your two-day Pokhara trip plan is here! You deserve a weekend away from the corporate world to unwind and take a breather. What better place to do that than the mystical land of the Phewa Lake? Our 2-night 3-day package to Pokhara makes the booking and planning process much more convenient and hassle-free for you at a significantly reasonable cost. The adventure starts with a scenic morning flight over the early mists over the hills, beside the mountains. Our team will ensure a proper pickup from the airport and drop at the Hotel Crown Himalayas where a luscious breakfast will be waiting. If you are looking for this weekend to be a complete rejuvenation experience from your everyday life, there is an option to take in a two-day Yoga Retreat amidst the peaceful tranquility of Pokhara.

A city aligned with the sapphire blue Phewa lake, and residing under the majestic Annapurna Mountain Range, Pokhara is a plate of just the right ingredients for your next travel plan. Named after its jewel ‘Pokhari’, it is home to all the glory of a perfect weekend trip one can imagine. Enthralling natural sceneries, peaceful city life, religious hub, and adventurous activities are just the beginning of the long list of wonders this city has to offer. It is believed that the Pokhara Valley originated around 700 years ago in the 1300s. A catastrophic avalanche-triggered flood that came as an outcome of massive earthquakes in the past centuries, came from the Sabche Cirque of the Annapurna range. Mother nature played her strings and the captivating valley was born. During the Shah Dynasty in the 1700s, the then king of the Kaski kingdom, Kulmandan Singh is said to have built the sacred Taal Barahi Temple near the then-young city.

During the 17th century, the Pokhara Valley was an important spot for training after the Tibet to India trading route was passed through it. It was one of the crown jewels of wealth for the Kaski Kingdom. Most of the ancestors of the now-residing people of the city came during the 1800s. This enhanced the population and the infrastructural growth in the city. However, the legend of the origin of the city tells another story. It is believed that thousands of years ago, here used to lay the peaceful city of Phewa. One day, Goddess Barahi took the form of an old woman and knocked on every house in the city asking for some food. While everyone shut her out and didn’t agree to help her, One man and his wife were kind enough to invite her inside and offer their food to her. The goddess was touched by their kindness and infuriated by the rest of the city. She decided to bring in a flood and destroy all their houses except for the couple who helped her. She asked them to go to a Hillock, where the now Tal Barahi temple resides, while the flood was coming. Everyone except for the couple died in the flood, and the Phewa Tal was formed. In honor of the Goddess, that couple built a temple dedicated to her.

It takes around 25 minutes to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu on the plane. 9 daily flights are available. The valley is located at an elevation of 822m above sea level, about 400m lower than the Kathmandu Valley. The temperature is warmer, and the best time to visit is around autumn or winter when it is not too hot, and not too cold either. It is also the time when the mountains are at their best view from the valley. There is a world of things you can spend your weekend doing here. Obviously, it makes no sense to miss visiting the beautiful Phewa Tal after your arrival. Its peaceful serenity reflecting the Annapurna mountain range in its waters perfectly balances out the bustling city. A breath of the tranquil view this valley gets because of the lake; your heart will be pumped throughout your stay here. You can simply go on a boat ride to take in the lake at its best. The boat ride will also take you to the Tal Barahi temple sitting in the middle of the lake as an island. It is a two-tiered temple that resonated with the historic Nepali pagoda-style architecture. There is also a trek that circuits the late and also stops by the World Peace Pagoda.

Within and just around the city lies more of nature that will baffle your trip. The Davis Falls is located about 2 kilometers away from the Pokhara Airport. It is the point where the Pardi Khola stream goes underground and disappears. During the monsoon, the waters are at their wildest and the sound of the waterfall in between the stoney cliffs is what people so admirably visit for. Right across the road of Davis Falls, lies the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave was discovered in 1950. It is the longest known cave in Nepal with a distance of 2950 meters. It is home to a magnificent stalagmite that is worshiped as Lord Shiva. People believe that once upon a time the lord himself would come inside this cave to meditate. Through the decades, it has been a significant Hindu pilgrimage site where devotees come to worship, and at present, it is a popular tourist attraction.

After spending half your day visiting these popular sites, you can dedicate the rest to visiting the World Peace Pagoda. About 7 kilometers from the core city, it is located at the top of the Anada hill of Pumdi village at an elevation of 2100m. Throughout your stay at Pokhara, the sight of this pagoda will not leave the corner of your eye as it sits overlooking the valley. A one-of-a-kind view of the city, it is only about a one-hour hike or a 20-minute drive away. Boating across the lake and then taking another hiking route is again a fun way to the World Peace Stupa. The second day at Pokhara can be dedicated to experiencing some of the countless adventurous activities the city has in store. There is boating, kayaking, rafting, horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding, bungee jumping, parasailing, and many more. You can even go on a hike to the alluring villages around the valley like Sarangkot, Dhampus, Begnas Tal, Rupa Tal, and many more.

Reminiscing the sparkling Pokhara city

Instead, if you wish to explore the city as best as you can in these two days, there is much to do and you better get started right after breakfast! The best way to know Pokhara is to take a long and swift walk by Phewa Lake. The serene waters that peek through light trees will follow your vision on one side as you absorb the lively markets and restaurants on the other side of the street. You can take this time to shop for bits and bobs of memories or souvenirs to take back home. By now the boating stations will start opening. We recommend taking a one-hour boat out to the Phewa Lake. You can explore the historic Tal Barahi Temple and take the boat for a spin around Phewa Lake. The sunlight reflecting through the waters and the serene view of the hills and the mountains will be the highlight of the day.

As the afternoon strikes, the locals will suggest a drive to the infamous Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev cave–you will see a beautiful perspective of the boundaries Pokhara’s enticing gift of nature has crossed. You will have just enough time to take an evening drive back to the hotel and enjoy a peaceful dinner at the Hotel with the Lakeside view.

Experiencing Pokhara’s natural wonders

After a lavish breakfast, you will have another world of possibilities to explore in Pokhara as you please. We recommend heading out early in the morning and driving up the hill to the World Peace Pagoda–the calming atmosphere up there, the breathtaking panoramic view of the mountain range, and overlooking the Phewa Lake and the gorgeous city of Pokhara. You can spend some time here, forget all your worries, and just breathe in the silence as much as you can. Only a quick drive upwards is the newly constructed Pumdikot Shiva Statue. If you make it in time before the afternoon clouds strike, an even higher perspective of the mountains can be enjoyed as the handsome natural backdrop to the glorious statue of Lord Shiva.

After spending the mornings up above the hills, this is the perfect time to head east. You can stop by the International Mountain Museum if you want to take a closer look at understanding the mountains, our geography, and our culture. A short 30-minute stop in your schedule is enough to take in the wonders inside the museum. Once your heart is full, one option to spend the late afternoon is to drive to Begnas Lake. The drive itself will give you a sightseeing opportunity of the city as well as the outskirts of the city. You can even go out boating across the lake and, later, Catch a glimpse of the sunset by the lakeside. A perfect day to take back golden memories of the beauty of Pokhara.

As our weekend comes to an end, the next day, you can again explore the lakeside even more, and experience the lively restaurants. By noon or afternoon, there will be a flight back to Kathmandu waiting. If you wish, there are options to tailor the package by adding more days to your trip. You can design your itinerary from then on, and we will do the planning for you. Needless to say, this much-needed break to the paradise Pokhara will be worth every penny and minute!

Passports, visas, and entry requirements

 PASSPORT

A valid passport is required for you to travel internationally. Similarly, your passport must have a minimum of 6 months validity remaining to travel in most countries. We recommend you take copies of the main passport pages and other important documents with you as well. And also please ensure that the name on your passport and airline ticket matches exactly.

 VISAS

Entry necessities can alternate at any time. Visas can take several weeks to process, so make sure you research the requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for obtaining any necessary documents as well as the application and processing time.

 NEPAL :

All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. In the arrivals hall, you’ll find electronic kiosks that read your passport, take your photo, and print out a completed form. Take your completed form to the payment counter where you'll pay for your visa, and then head to the immigration line for "Visa on Arrival". You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars (subject to change, cash only). Other currencies are also accepted although rates may differ. The following costs were correct at the time of writing:

- Multi-entry visa valid for 15 days - US$30

- Multi-entry visa valid for 30 days - US$50

- Multi-entry visa valid for 90 days - US$125

Your visa application form may require you to state the dates on which you enter and exit that country.

Medical and health information

GENERAL HEALTH

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition. Consider whether you may be in a vulnerable category for COVID-19. See your doctor or travel clinic to have a basic health check-up, ask if your travel plans may affect your health, and plan any vaccinations you need. Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

Vaccination Policy

All travelers on Nepal trips (outside Australia, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands) are required to produce proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. From 1 December 2021, all travelers on trips, including in Australia, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands, are required to produce proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

AIR POLLUTION:

Air quality in Nepal can be poor, especially in winter. Some towns, including Kathmandu, experience very high levels of seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution. Seek medical advice if you're concerned about the effects of air pollution.

MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES:

Malaria and Dengue fever are a risk in various parts of Nepal. Mostly, during the monsoon season. Protect yourself against insect bites by wearing clothing that covers as much skin as possible, including repellent while sleeping under a net.

MEDICAL FACILITIES AND TREATMENT:

Healthcare services are unevenly distributed across the country and access to care in some areas may be limited. Healthcare in Kathmandu generally meets international standards but healthcare throughout the rest of the country may be inadequate. Ensure that you have accessible funds to cover upfront fees and adequate travel health insurance, including evacuation. Hospitals in Nepal typically require upfront payment in cash or credit card, regardless if you have travel health insurance.

Food and dietary requirements

FOOD IN NEPAL:

In Kathmandu and Pokhara there are plenty of restaurants and cafes for all tastes and budgets. Nepal caters very well to vegetarians and vegans with almost all restaurants having a veg section on the menu.

Accommodation

LUGGAGE LIMITS:

Domestic flights in Nepal have strict weight limits - 10kg of check-in luggage and 5kg of carry-on hand luggage per person is included with your flight ticket. Excess baggage (up to 5kg per person only) will be charged at your own expense.

ROAD TRAVEL:

Roadwork and infrastructure projects can cause significant delays on major roads within cities and highways between destinations. Road travel can also be disrupted due to demonstrations and strikes without warning. Major roadworks are currently ongoing in and around Kathmandu and the roads to Chitwan National Park. Delays, heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and dust are a reality of road travel in Nepal.

The monsoon season is from June to September and weather conditions can disrupt travel during this time due to flooding and landslides. Disruption of air travel and airport closures are also possible. Be prepared that the itinerary may need to change at short notice.

INTERNAL FLIGHTS:

There have been a number of air accidents in Nepal. We only use airlines that have passed strict safety audits for including internal flights in Nepal, including Buddha Air, Yeti Air & Tara Air.

Money matters

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepali rupee (NPR). Its symbol is often displayed as Rs. ATMs can only be found in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Bhaktapur. Make sure you carry sufficient cash to cover your needs when traveling outside of these cities. Money exchange facilities are available in Kathmandu, Namche, Pokhara, Chitwan (only outside the park), and Bhaktapur. Credit cards are not widely accepted.

You are responsible only for the personal clothing and gear listed below. We'll take care of everything else.  A gear check will be completed before you depart for the trail. This list does not include additional clothing/items you may want for travel or for your time off the trail. Below is a list of equipment and documentation that we suggest you take with you. Please use this checklist as a guide when packing for your holiday.

- Travel documents: passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, air tickets or e-ticket receipts, trip notes

- Photocopy of main passport pages, visa (if required), travel insurance, and air tickets

- Spare passport photos

- Money: cash/credit card/EFTPOS card

- Money belt

- Small padlocks

- Personal first-aid kit

- Watch/alarm clock and torch/flashlight (and spare batteries)

- Electrical adapter plug

- Toiletries/roll of toilet paper/travel wipes

- Insect repellent

- Sunscreen, lip balm, sunhat, and sunglasses

- Earplugs and eye mask (for light sleepers)

- Extra pair of prescription glasses (if required)

- 2 strong plastic garbage bags (for laundry and in case of rain)

- Refillable water bottle

- Phrasebook

- Warm clothes - when traveling in cooler climates

- Wind and waterproof jacket

- Comfortable and sturdy walking shoes with good walking socks

- Camera/phone (with charger)

- Binoculars

Informal clothing is all that is required. Remember to dress in a modest fashion. Light clothing is usually all that will be required for most of the year. During the winter months, December to February, it will be chilly and possibly foggy in the early mornings, with temperatures dropping down to a minimum of around 0ºC on some days. A warm, windproof jacket will be required.

Climate and seasonal information

Nepal's climate varies greatly depending on the season:

JUN - SEP: the monsoon rains (mostly at night) bring landslides in regional areas. Cloud cover often obscures mountain views with rain, mud, and leeches deterring most trekkers at this time of year. Treks running in September can be hot and very humid at lower altitudes.

MAR-APR: Spring brings warm weather and spectacular rhododendron blooms. A popular time to visit and one of the peak times to trek.

OCT - NOV: Clear skies and warm days make autumn the peak season.

DEC - FEB: Winter brings cold temperatures and snow to the mountains. Good trekking, but remember to rug up.

Phone and internet access

Hotels in Kathmandu generally have excellent WiFi connections. Most hotels offer free WiFi in public areas, with some also offering in-room WIFI, sometimes for an additional fee.

Group Leader

The goal of the group leader is to make your travels easier and to help you have the best trip possible. Have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects.

We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip. We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while traveling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, flight tickets, cash, and other valuable items. Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however, during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests or relax and take it easy.

Strikes happen on a very frequent basis in Nepal. Most, but not all, of the recent strikes are political in nature and are generally called for the night before with little or no warning. If you arrive as a tourist during a busy political time of year there's a strong chance you might not be able to travel the country as much as you would normally.

Travel protection is highly recommended to protect your travel investment from unforeseen circumstances that may occur during or before your trip. Make sure your insurance covers you for your intended activities, including travel and trekking above 3000m if this is included on your itinerary, mountain rescue services, and helicopter evacuation costs.

The weather is not the only factor when thinking about when to go to Nepal. This Himalayan nation has a rich history, which can be discovered through its festivals. Nepal’s festival calendar fills every month of the year with colorful celebrations that offer interesting insights into the local culture. Stumbling onto a local festival may prove to be the highlight of your travels in Nepal – and given the sheer number of them, you’d be unlucky not to. Festivals may be Hindu, Buddhist, animist, or a mix of all three. Traveling in Nepal during Holi Festival (28-29 March 2021, 27-28 March 2022), can at times be dangerous due to revelers consuming intoxicating substances. The day is often associated with physical violence and danger. Traveling during the Hindu festival Diwali (4 November 2021, 24 November 2022) can also be dangerous. During this time there are many displays of fireworks in the streets. It can be very noisy for several days and there is also a lot of pollution caused by the fireworks.

Culture shock

Not all cultures share the same beliefs and values. These differences can cause severe culture shock. Some culture shocks that travelers might find while traveling in Nepal are:

Don’t assume people speak your language. In cultures where you don’t speak the language, simple tasks suddenly become more complicated- like riding a bus or ordering food at a restaurant.

Some Asian cultures such as Indian, Korean, and Chinese openly spit on the sidewalk same with Nepal.

In some Asian countries such as Thailand, India, Nepal, and some Muslim countries such as Morocco, using water and your hands, not toilet paper, is considered much cleaner than using toilet paper.

There is poverty all over the world but it never seems real until you experience it firsthand. There is a number of homeless beggars and slums in Nepal. There are piles of the garbage next to rivers, people sleeping in gutters, and meat being butchered on a tarp next to the street.

After your arrival, you will run into people who will offer you a taxi ride or a cheap hotel. When you hop into a car and leave through the gate of the airport you will see the snake driving vehicles. There are dividers but the car might go to the wrong side to overtake, which is very normal here, and therefore no reason to worry.

When in Nepal, don’t expect things to go on time. You will face delays almost in all activities. There is even a phrase “Nepali Time” which is used sarcastically to point out delays in activities.

You might see guys holding hands when they are walking down the street. Guys holding hands in Nepal is a sign of a good friendship and brotherhood.

At monuments, museums, Durbar Squares, etc if someone starts following you and explaining things, they are hiring themselves as your guide and expecting to be paid at the end. Tell them clearly their services are not required pronto, or things are going to get awkward.

(Travel Restrictions, COVID Tests & Quarantine Requirements)

Vaccination Requirements: Nepal is open to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. However, vaccinated individuals can bypass the testing rules that require travelers to provide proof of a negative coronavirus test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. All travelers regardless of vaccination status must have travel insurance that covers health, immediate crisis, or rescue for the duration of the trip; proof of accommodation in Nepal; a completed International Travel Arrival Form; and either a Nepalese visa or a recommendation from the tourism board.

1. Passengers must have a COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival. The 37 best things to do in D.C. this weekend and next week

Celebrate Pride Month at festivals, parades and parties, or check out outdoor movies, concerts and dance parties.

Pride Month arrives with parades, festivals, block parties, concerts, beers and even a yappy hour. The Fiesta Asia street festival, which was rained out in mid-May, gets a second chance on Pennsylvania Avenue. There are a wide variety of events happening this weekend: opera outdoors at the Lincoln Memorial, movies outdoors at the Kennedy Center and people in sundresses outdoors in Columbia Heights to mark Wonderland’s 20th annual Sundress Fest. Dance parties celebrate Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder and Lana Del Rey. Sample barbecue from top pitmasters, or try dishes from a restaurant that hasn’t even opened yet.

Thursday, May 30

CJM After Sunset: Deli Nights at the Capital Jewish Museum

Pickleback shots will be on hand during an after-hours party celebrating the Capital Jewish Museum’s exhibit “‘I’ll Have What She’s Having’: The Jewish Deli.” Tour the exhibition to learn about the history behind your favorite deli dishes before making your own pickling seasoning. Refreshments include soup shooters from Prescription Chicken and black and white cookies to take home from Call Your Mother, as well as a cash bar with even more food available for purchase. Watch out for gallery talks during the evening: Ted Merwin, author of “Pastrami on Rye: An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli,” discusses the history of cured meats and the deli as a gathering space, while Michaele Weissman, who wrote “The Rye Bread Marriage,” and “Industry Night” podcaster Nycci Nellis also share their knowledge. At 2 p.m., Nellis is recording her food-focused podcast on-site at the museum, and you can listen in free as she chats with Weissman and the team behind Beresovsky’s Deli, the recently opened Jewish deli in Navy Yard. 6 to 9 p.m. $15; 21 and older only.

Pints for a Purpose at Bluejacket

To mark Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, D.C. breweries Bluejacket and Lost Generation collaborated on a saison called Briefly Gorgeous, which gets its citrusy sweetness from yuzu and Buddha’s hand, and a tingle in the finish from a mix of red and green peppercorns. The Navy Yard brewpub hosts a fundraiser for the social justice group Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate featuring dishes from Moon Rabbit chef Kevin Tien (hot honey curry fish and chips) and Any Day Now chef Tim Ma (mapo tofu poutine). Proceeds from the food and Briefly Gorgeous will be donated to Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate. 5 p.m. Free .

Friday, May 31

Showtime’s 11th anniversary

Great music, cheap drinks, a space regulars want to come back to — that’s the formula at Showtime, and it’s why the one-room Bloomingdale bar is celebrating its 11th year in business this weekend. Join the crowds for a stellar selection of DJs, including Baby Alcatraz and Boy Howdy, dropping dusty soul, R&B and rock records, while grabbing beer-and-a-shot combos. (And hey, did you know Washington Post readers nominated Showtime as one of the best dive bars in the D.C. area ? Take a look at the list and vote for your favorite.) 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Free .

‘Jurassic Park’ at the Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center’s Extraordinary Cinema series is back for another summer, with movies shown outdoors on the Reach’s video wall. Arrive early to find a spot in the grass for “Jurassic Park.” Picnics, blankets and low chairs are welcome. Films begin around 8:30 p.m. Free; no registration required .

Lana Del Rey dance party at DC9

The songwriter might be known for her glitzy melancholia, but that doesn’t mean fans don’t get down to it. Dance to hits like “Summertime Sadness” and “West Coast,” plus songs off her Grammy-nominated 2023 album “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” at DC9’s “Lust for Lana” night. Coquette attire is encouraged. 8 p.m. $15-$20.

Wonder-Full at the Black Cat

DJ Spinna is an icon in underground hip-hop and deep house, spinning in clubs around the world. Beyond his remixes and rare tracks, he is best known for Wonder-Full, a traveling dance party celebrating the genius of Stevie Wonder, from the days of Little Stevie Wonder through “Songs in the Key of Life,” “Hotter Than July” and “Jungle Fever.” For fans of funk and soul, it doesn’t get better than this — and you won’t be able to stop singing along. 9 p.m. $25-$30 .

Massie at Pie Shop

On the cover of its last EP, Massie went for the flesh: a close-up portrait of a bloody smile, the band’s name spelled out in braces. The female-fronted pop-punk trio grins and bears it on the project, and will release a new single alongside Baltimore alt-rockers Dosser (not to be confused with their sonic cousins in D.C.’s Tosser). 8 p.m. $15 .

Saturday, June 1

Annapolis Pride Parade and Festival

Annapolis Pride’s annual parade starts at the City Dock at noon, with floats, bands and Grand Marshal Christian Siriano proceeding up Main Street, heading for Maryland Hall and the Bates Athletic Complex. Mosaic Pride Celebration

Pride comes to Fairfax’s Mosaic District on Saturday with a Mosaic Pride parade through the neighborhood, family story time with drag queen Tara Hoot, a DJ and drag performances, an aerialist, and dancing to a cover band. 3 to 9 p.m. Free .

Fairfax City Pride

The city of Fairfax and George Mason University team up to open Fairfax Pride Month at the Old Town Hall on Saturday, featuring the Mosaic Harmony community choir, family activities such as face painting and crafts, and a vendor fair. ( 5 to 7 p.m. Free .) Coyote Grille, located a block down Main Street, hosts a drag show with the Palace. ( 9 p.m. $10-$15 .)

Fiesta Asia street fair

The annual Fiesta Asia shuts down Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and Sixth streets NW to showcase more than 20 Asian cultures in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Look for live music and dance performances representing multiple countries, a parade, a karaoke stage, a cosplay contest, martial arts demonstrations, hands-on games and crafts for kids, a large vendor area, and a “food alley” featuring local and New York City restaurants that is apparently 50 percent larger than last year’s. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free .

New Kitchens on the Block at Mess Hall

At this long-running D.C. food festival, the restaurants serving up bites are so cutting-edge, they haven’t even opened yet. The 10th edition of New Kitchens on the Block at Mess Hall continues to introduce diners to what’s next on the scene, with a mix of new projects from stalwart Washington chefs. This June, try food from eight upcoming restaurants, including Moon Rabbit chef Kevin Tien and pastry chef Susan Bae’s still-unnamed Vietnamese bakery, Lucky Buns’ burger master Alex McCoy’s West Coast-style Monstera Burrito, and Maketto owner Erik Bruner-Yang’s upcoming H Street bar Providencia. VIP tickets include access to a private after-party at Right Proper’s nearby Brookland brewery. Noon to 2 p.m. for Round 1 or 3 to 5 p.m. for Round 2. $119-$159 .

Festival Argentino at Kenmore Middle School

This 37-year-old festival, whose sponsors include Arlington County and the Embassy of Argentina, celebrates Argentine culture through tango, food, music and soccer. Throughout the day, the stage is filled with tango, ballet and folk dancers; rock, folk and tango bands, including the award-winning Argentine group Los Alonsitos; vendors selling traditional crafts; and stands with asado and other foods. D.C. United legend Marco Etcheverry will be honored with a special ceremony. 3:30 to 10:30 p.m. $15-$35; free for children 3 and younger .

Opera Italiana Is in the Air at the Lincoln Memorial

Opera Italiana Is in the Air began in 2017 as a free outdoor concert in New York’s Central Park — a way to take opera out of expensive concert halls and introduce it to younger, more diverse crowds. It arrived in D.C. in 2022, and founder Alvise Casellati returns again this year to conduct musicians in front of the Lincoln Memorial, under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy. The program is heavy on Puccini, to mark 100 years since the death of the Italian composer, and soprano Ewa Plonka, who recently sang the title role in the Washington National Opera’s production of “Turandot,” is a featured performer. 6 to 7:30 p.m. Free .

Champions League Final viewing parties

Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund face off Saturday at 3 p.m. for the right to call themselves the best soccer team in Europe. The Madridistas are watching at Elephant and Castle , while Across the Pond is the home of D.C.’s official Dortmund fan group . There are plenty of other options, too: Wunder Garten is teaming up with rec league District Sports for a viewing party at the NoMa beer garden, where sales of Atlas beers benefit the soccer nonprofit Open Goal Project . Franklin Hall is poised for a doubleheader: After the Champions League, it’s showing the U.S. women’s national team play South Korea at 5 p.m. Soccer specials include $4 pints of Narragansett and $5 shooters. Whitlow’s has been showing Champions League knockout rounds, and the streak continues with discounted buckets of Heineken ($20-$25) and bar snacks ($6-$12) during the final. The Midlands is showing the match with sounds indoors and on the patio while offering $5 drinks. The Brig might be home to Dortmund’s Klassiker rivals Bayern Munich, but it’s opening for the match with sound. Reminder: Wherever you are heading, get there early.

Day of Archaeology Festival at Dumbarton House

For the first time, D.C. is celebrating Archaeology Month this June. The start of the month brings together archaeologists from Washington, Maryland and Virginia to talk about local history and heritage. The day, organized by nonprofit Archaeology in the Community, includes activities for kids, artifact displays, music and crafts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free.

Mr. Leesburg Pageant at Crooked Run Fermentation

To be crowned Mr. Leesburg, contestants have to complete an interview with judges (including the reigning Miss Arlington and Miss Loudoun County), strut in their summer formalwear, show off their talent and, of course, model beachwear. The competition, launched by bartenders at Crooked Run’s Leesburg location in 2023, has a more serious goal: raising money for charity. In fact, the pageant awards the title of “Mr. Generosity” to the contestant who collects the most for LAWS, a charity assisting victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. While there’s a wait list for competitors, watching the event is free and open to the public. Noon to 4 p.m. Free .

Takoma Trukgarten

Sample beers from the DMV and beyond at the pop-up beer and cider festival in the TPSS Co-op parking lot. Breweries will include Silver Branch, Third Hill, 7 Locks, Anxo Cider, Aslin, Nighthawk and Denizens, and food will be available from Soko Butcher, Cielo Rojo, Catalyst Hot Dogs and Motorkat (for purchase separately). While the cheaper ticket (“beer fan”) includes six tasting tickets and the second tier (“beer lover”) includes 12 tickets, both ticket types will get you a souvenir glass. Noon to 5 p.m. $30-$55.

Glover Park Day

The Northwest neighborhood’s community day features a lineup of local musicians (who’ll play jazz, funk, country and more) and shopping from area vendors. Make your own friendship bracelets, explore watercolor paintings, learn about henna designs and shop for handmade pottery while enjoying eats from restaurants like Angelico La Pizzeria and Glover Park Grill. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.

Sunday, June 2

Loudoun Pride

Loudoun Pride brings three stages of entertainment to Claude Moore Park on Sunday, including a family zone with magicians, music, bounce houses, yoga and animal ambassadors from the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. Look for a “Dragstravaganza,” a vendor fair with more than 150 booths representing local businesses and organizations, a beer garden with local breweries and wineries, and a variety of food trucks and dessert stands. 1 to 7 p.m. $5 .

Totally Radical Pride beer release at Lost Generation

Eckington’s Lost Generation Brewing is collaborating with the Capital Pride Festival on an official beer for the first time. We haven’t tried Totally Radical yet, so we can’t tell you anything about what it tastes like, but we can tell you that the party is going to be a big one, with DJ Scorpio providing the soundtrack from 2 to 6 p.m., a drag performance with Ms. Capital Pride from 4 to 5 p.m. and Pride-themed trivia from 7 to 9 p.m. Additionally, all proceeds from Totally Radical go to Capital Pride. 2 to 9 p.m. Free .

Rockville Pride

Rockville Pride returns to Rockville Town Square on Sunday, with music and performances, a fair with vendors and information booths, and arts and crafts activities for children. 2 to 5 p.m. Free .

Wonderland Ballroom Sundress Fest

For two decades, the Wonderland Ballroom’s annual Sundress Fest has provided some of the most entertaining people-watching in D.C. while raising a good chunk of change for local charities. The format is simple: Everyone — men and women alike — wears a sundress to the Columbia Heights tavern, where the DJs get folks dancing beginning at 11 a.m., and a block of 11th Street is closed to traffic until 8 p.m. Don’t have a sundress? Try to find one on the racks provided by the bar, available for a donation to D.C. Central Kitchen, and take it out to the patio to work on your tan lines. Anyone wearing a sundress is eligible for all-day happy hour deals, as well as the coveted “best dressed” competition. After all, it’s all in good fun. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Free .

The Biggest Beyoncé Block Party Ever at the Bullpen

Decorated Stetson hats and Levi’s jeans are de rigueur at the Bullpen on Sunday, where the Beyhive is gathering to celebrate “Cowboy Carter.” Billed as “The Biggest Beyoncé Block Party Ever,” the rodeo-themed event promises an all-Beyoncé soundtrack, games, drinks and food trucks. VIP tickets include access to the bar’s upper deck and optional bottle service. 2 to 8 p.m. $20-$40 .

Beltway BBQ Showdown at Show Place Arena

Did you know that Prince George’s County’s annual barbecue competition is the official state barbecue championship of Maryland? That means the winner of the 14th annual event earns a place at the Kansas City Barbeque Society’s championships. And while there are cooking demonstrations and vendors selling ribs, pulled pork and other smoky treats, there are plenty of other things to do in Upper Marlboro: live music from Black Alley and New Impressionz; a car, truck and bike show; line dancing lessons; family activities and a children’s area with a bounce house; and a market. Just don’t miss your chance to vote in the People’s Choice sauce contest. Noon to 6 p.m. $12; free for ages 5 and younger .

Cleveland Park Day

Historic Cleveland Park looks a little less sleepy on Cleveland Park Day. The Sam’s Park and Shop parking lot is given over to DJs, family activities (think face painting and snow cones) and a curry cook-off featuring Dolan, Indique, and other neighborhood restaurants. Look for a Grover Cleveland look-alike contest, a pet fashion show and a beer garden sponsored by Nanny O’Brien’s. The former service lane across from the Uptown — now a wide pedestrian-friendly strip known as the Cleveland Park Promenade — holds more than two dozen makers, potters, jewelers and other artists, as well as live music and dining pop-ups. The neighborhood library hosts a Kids Zone with a slime bar and free popcorn, and restaurants and bars along the strip offer discounted food and drinks. Noon to 5 p.m. Free .

The Rosé Party at District Winery

Cheers all afternoon with pink-hued wine at District Winery’s annual Rosé Party, where a crowd dressed in rosy colors takes over the Navy Yard outpost’s rooftop. The rosé is bottomless during the event, with a rosé tasting bar and rosé-based cocktails in addition to beer, wine and soda. A make-your-own cotton candy station continues the pink theme (savory snacks will be passed out, too). The party’s activities include a wine bottle painting craft, face painting and temporary tattoos, and a DJ on the dance floor. 2 to 5 p.m. $99 .

Tiki Pop-Up at Morris American Bar

When you think of tropical drinks, you might think of fruity, rum-soaked beverages. That’s not the case at Morris American Bar, which promises “specialty rum-free cocktails” as part of its day-long tiki party. A pig roast provides the complement to the drinks. 2 p.m. to midnight. Free .

Sari-Sari Pop-Up Market at Maketto

Local AAPI art and culture organization Samasama curated the 15 makers and vendors at this pop-up market at H Street’s Maketto, with hands-on craft making, live painting and cool tunes from Les the DJ. Noon to 5 p.m. Free .

‘Sounds Gay, I’m In’ at Serenata

Much-loved LGBTQ bar As You Are has been closed since April, when heavy rain caused structural damage to the Barracks Row building. While the landlord is working on repairs, As You Are’s owners have since said they don’t have a timeline for reopening . La Cosecha’s Serenata cocktail bar has stepped up to help, hosting As You Are’s bartenders for themed social events on Mondays throughout the summer. The first is a happy hour and dance party with DJ Mimi, with coming weeks bringing Queer Deaf Happy Hour (June 10) and Trans Happy Hour and Game Night (June 17). He Said Wine, She Said Beer. They Both Said Cheese! at Right Proper Brewing Shaw

Beer and wine sommeliers can agree on one thing: Cheese is the ultimate pairing for your beverage of choice. To celebrate National Cheese Day, Right Proper is agreeing to disagree. Cheesemonger Kestrel Carr picked three cheeses. Right Proper owner Leah Cheston picked a beer to go with each, and Michael Warner, the owner of the wine shop DCanter, selected a wine. At this friendly competition, you’ll be served the chosen cheeses with both beverages, and decide which you prefer. 6:30 p.m. $40 .

‘The Six Pack: On the Open Road in Search of WrestleMania’ at the Black Cat

Brad Balukjian’s first book, “The Wax Pack,” found the author on a 48-day, 11,000-mile road trip to find out what became of every player pictured in a package of 1986 baseball cards. His new book, “ The Six Pack ,” is even more ambitious: Balukjian sets out to track down Hulk Hogan, the Iron Sheik and others connected to the 1980s heyday of the World Wrestling Federation, seeing what happened to them when they left the ring, and examining professional wrestling’s role in American pop culture. This discussion is presented by Solid State Books. 7:30 p.m. $5; $30 with a copy of the book .
