Well, that was fun! Decided to do a bike tour of London on a recent vacation there and opted to book with Red Bike Tours. Owain was a great guide who took us to the less visited spots. He pointed out nuances of the places we cycled to and answered all our questions (and we had a lot). The bikes were easy to ride and comfortable and, being flat, London was a cake walk. Kept to less traveled roads so traffic wasn't an obstacle. We stopped in a park for a warm up with coffee (late April weather was chilly) and Owain shared his thoughts on life in London and shared some of his favorite pubs to visit during our trip. Really delightful experience!

reposting my review....why was my last post moved to 'not recommended?!' Arranged a long weekend in London for a large group of friends to celebrate my 40th, and wanted to plan a few activities. Took a chance on Red Bike Tours, and knew after talking to Owain (who runs the tours) on the phone that we'd have an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon seeing some beautiful areas of the city, rather than just trying to hit all the big attractions (I'd done a bike tour in London years ago and was a bit stressed when battling some crazy traffic in places). Firstly - the bikes. Obviously fairly new and well looked after (and so pretty!) The bright red helped us easily spot group members. Next up, kudos to our guide Owain for sharing some interesting facts at places of interest and having a good instinct for knowing when to get the ride moving again. He clearly knows a lot about the city and we enjoyed testing his knowledge with silly questions! Owain took us through some truly beautiful and fascinating places in London (some of those mews streets - picture postcards!!). Importantly, the route he took felt very safe and there were many parts of the ride where 2 or 3 of us could ride side by side and chat. Owain incorporated a mini picnic in the park at my request and even offered to play some fun tunes on his portable speaker. He really made the day fun and set the tone perfectly for my party weekend. Thank you Owain! Definitely recommend booking a bike for a fun and interesting day out.

Innovation Meets Tradition

London bike tours.

Iconic London is the centerpoint of British tradition, royalty and politics, and England's extraordinary capital. With its famous mix of innovative urbanity, boho backstreets, and resplendent regal architecture, London is a legendary city of diverse and dynamic appeal.

On the banks of the romantic River Thames, the Palace of Westminster casts its commanding reflection into one of the world's most famous waterways. As the cosmopolitan caterpillar of commuters cross London Bridge each morning, so the resplendent red jackets of the Guards reshuffle outside Buckingham Palace, royal residence to the King of England. London is one of the biggest players in world economics, a city of incredible wealth, but also of diversity, culture, and staggering history.

A bicycle tour is an efficient and exhilarating way to discover England's captivating capital in a day, taking you to some of the oldest palaces, picturesque parks, and symbolic squares via a pedal through the midst of modernity. Explore St. Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Covent Garden, Soho, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Shakespeare's New Globe Theatre, and the Dockyards, amongst other iconic London landmarks, all in a single day!

You'll have the added benefit of bike rental, and tours that can accommodate a family day trip with children. Whichever adventure you select, England's capital will be eager to enchant!

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

TfL has revealed loads of stunning new cycle routes for every London borough

Transport for London has partnered with Strava to encourage more Londoners to cycle for fun on the weekends

India Lawrence

If you go on a cycle ride and don’t record it on Strava, did it even happen? Lovers of sharing their exercise on social media will be thrilled to hear that TfL is launching new Strava cycling routes for every London borough. On yer bikes!

In a bid to encourage Londoners to trade four wheels for two, TfL has launched Cycle Sundays with Strava routes to go with it. These routes are designed to be cycled at leisure and not for commuting – riding to work with a double decker up your backside and a white van on your right is a different story.

The new routes have been carefully selected by TfL and a range of partners including British Cycling, Cycle Sisters, JoyRiders, London Cycling Campaign, Sustrans and Wheels for Wellbeing.  Routes include tours of London’s best parks like Greenwich and Battersea as well as routes through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Hackney Marshes and Ally Pally.

TfL is encouraging riders without their own bikes to hire Santander Cycles – a day pass allows unlimited journeys under 30 minutes from £3. Plus, with a new Day Pass, Santander Cycles e-bikes will be available to members for an additional £1 per half hour. E-bikes are otherwise available for £3.30 per 30-minute ride for non-members and customers without a Day Pass, or a fare of £1 per 60 minutes for monthly and annual members.

Anyone can become a member by creating an account for free   here  or through the app.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: ‘I'm committed to enabling more Londoners to experience the joys of cycling in the capital. That’s why I'm delighted to support Londoners who are new to cycling, or who haven't got their bike out of the shed in a while, to give it a try on Sundays. TfL is offering a range of cycling discounts and training, as well as highlighting leisure routes people can use in their local area.

‘Those who don’t have their own bike can hire one from the 800 Santander docking stations dotted around the capital and take advantage of the Day Pass, allowing unlimited journeys under 30 minutes from £3. I hope this exciting initiative encourages more Londoners to get out cycling, and incorporate active travel into their daily lives.’

Here’s the full list of new routes promoted by TfL in each London borough, as well as the partner that helped put each route together.
