Why Thunderball Cave Bahamas is a Classic James Bond Location in Exuma

007 thunderball tour exuma

Most people who travel to the Bahamas are there for the stunning beaches, the beautiful weather, and the Caribbean lifestyle. However, there’s a hidden treasure that some lucky travelers stumble upon while there: Thunderball Cave Bahamas.

Located in the Exumas, a chain of 365 islands, Thunderball Grotto Exuma is worth visiting no matter how long you’ll be in the Bahamas. It’s so beautiful that it’s even made its way into some of the many famous Bahamas movies!

To help you understand more about it, we’ve compiled some essential information about Thunderball Grotto Bahamas below. By the time you finish reading, you’ll know more about it and will even know how to see it on a day trip to Bahamas .

Keep reading to find out more!

Thunderball Cave Bahamas: What to Know

Getting to the exumas.

As mentioned, Thunderball Grotto and some of the other top sites in the Bahamas are in the Exumas , a region to the south of Nassau. Unlike Freeport and other bustling parts of the country, you won’t find throngs of people in the Exumas. What you will find, however, are stunning beaches bordered by bright, clear-blue water.

Part of the reason why the Exumas are quieter is because they’re more of a challenge to get to. There’s no international airport in the region like there is on Nassau, nor can the islands accommodate the massive cruise ships that stop at other islands.

The Exumas islands sets the Thunderball Filming locations alive as the main filming location for the high-speed boat chase of James Bond through the Exuma Cays. The Thunderball Grotto Cave is one location that can be visited on a Tour with Bahamas Air Tours.

The views from the plane are an experience of their own!

One of the ways that many people reach the Exumas is by ferry. Traveling on the boat from Nassau can take you to the region in a couple of hours. However, most of the people who reach the Exumas do so by boat, meaning that you’re bound to share the ferry with tons of other people. The experience is also uncomfortable as the boat has to churn through the rough waters of the open seas.

Those downsides have led to the rise in popularity of a new way to reach the Exumas: Bahamas day trips by plane from Nassau . When you sign up for one of these excursions, you’ll arrive at Staniel Cay in 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to see Thunderball Cave Bahamas and the other top attractions in the region.

The Thunderball Grotto Bahamas cave is hidden within this small island that sits just off the coast of Staniel Cay island. It is one of the main Thunderball filming locations - although the James Bond producers filmed a lot of scenes for this film across the Bahamas.

Thunderball Grotto Guide

If you’re unfamiliar with it, Thunderball Grotto Bahamas is an underwater cave system. These caves take millions of years to form and are teeming with all sorts of underwater life, including coral, fish, and other aquatic creatures.

If you’re a fan of James Bond, you’ll already know where the name “Thunderball” comes from – from the 1963 film  Thunderball ! Many  Thunderball  filming locations are in the Bahamas, including the cave system, so it’s only fitting that the location pays homage to the famous movie.

A promotional poster for the James Bond Thunderball Film, 1965, hangs in the Staniel Cay Yacht Club SCYC, and was the location for the 007 Thunderball film.

A promotional poster for Thunderball at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

However, the site has a decorated Hollywood career besides being  Thunderball  filming locations. Movies such as  Splash  with Tom Hanks, and  Into the Blue , with Jessica Alba and the late Paul Walker, also feature scenes at the grotto.

Its rich pop-culture history and the stunning nature present have transformed Thunderball Cave Bahamas into the attraction that it is today.

What to See When You Arrive

When you travel with Bahamas Air Tours on a Staniel Cay day tour, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the waters in and around the underwater caves. Given the diversity of underwater life, Thunderball Cave Bahamas is the perfect spot to dive, snorkel, swim, or even just wade through the water.

As mentioned, you can expect to see all sorts of aquatic life around you. You can see coral, conch, lobster, yellowtail snappers, angelfish, sergeant majors, and much more. Above water, you can also see the private islands of celebrities like Oprah and Johnny Depp in the distance! There’s so much to see all around you that you won’t know where to look.

Dive into the Thunderball Grotto James Bond Cave on an exciting Nassau to Exuma Day Trip with Bahamas Air Tours. Swim into the Thunderball Cave on a guide tour with Bahamas Air Tours.

Aquatic life abounds at Thunderball Grotto Exuma.

While you can visit the caves at high tide, the best time to visit is at low tide. That’s because when the water is at its highest, underwater tunnels and caves make certain areas unreachable without scuba diving equipment.

Other Sites in the Region

While Thunderball Grotto is one of the highlights of Exuma day trips, it’s far from the only thing you’ll get to see when you travel with Bahamas Air Tours. Let’s take a look at some of the other highlights that make Staniel Cay day trips from Nassau or Miami so worthwhile.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club

Flying to the Exumas has you using the island of Staniel Cay as your base of operations in the region. The island houses a small, regional airport, connecting it to the outside world. Upon arrival, you’ll then transfer to a boat that you’ll use to traverse the waters and surrounding islands. However, Staniel Cay has plenty of sites to see in its own right.

It features a charming town, complete with shops and restaurants. When you travel on a Staniel Cay Day Tour, you’ll eat at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for lunch.

The Staniel Cay Yacht Club was the location that the Thunderball Film crews stayed at whilst fillming the Thunderball James Bond Film. Not far from SCYC Staniel Cay Yacht Club is the famous Thunderball Cave Bahamas.

Besides offering delicious food, the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is also historic!

Aside from modern amenities, the island (like every other island in the Bahamas) is also beautiful. From palm trees swaying in the breeze to the vivid, crystal-clear water that stretches to the horizon, walking around Staniel Cay will have you feeling like you stepped into a postcard.

While Thunderball Grotto might have an illustrious, star-studded past, Pig Beach may have surpassed it in popularity in recent years. In fact, the Exuma Pigs at Big Major Cay have become so popular, they’ve inspired “knock-off” pig beaches in other parts of the Bahamas and the world.

The swimming pigs at Pig Beach are not far from the James Bond Thunderball Grotto Cave where you can visit one of the Thunderball filming locations in the Exumas.

The famous Exuma pigs are just a short trip away from Thunderball Cave Bahamas!

If you’re unfamiliar with it, Pig Beach is an island that’s only residents are pigs. No one knows for certain how they got to the island, but as farmers have brought them food by boat for years, the pigs have learned to associate the arrival of boats with feeding time. That’s made them gregarious and eager to greet visitors to their island.

On swimming pigs tours, visitors get the chance to get up close and personal with the famous pigs. You can explore their island, hang out with them on the beach, and even swim alongside them in the water.

We’ll let you decide whether you prefer Thunderball Cave Bahamas or the Exuma Pigs at Pig Beach!

Compass Cay

While it might not be as famous as Pig Island or Thunderball Cave Bahamas, many people who sign up for day trips with Bahamas Air Tours end up enjoying the experience at Compass Cay more than anything else. So what can you find there? Schools of nurse sharks!

Years ago, the owner of the Compass Cay marina befriended a school of nurse sharks, and they’ve stuck around the waters ever since. When you travel there, you’ll see them swimming around right offshore.

Given the number of sharks present, the site has gained attention in recent years, to the point that it’s even been the subject of shark documentaries. But regardless of whether you’re an avid shark lover, seeing the massive fish up close will be an experience you won’t soon forget.

Star in Your Own Bahamas Movies

Thunderball Cave Bahamas is one of the highlights of the Bahamas. It features amazing underwater life and has even been the backdrop of several Hollywood films. However, it’s just one of many amazing sites in the Exumas.

When you travel with Bahamas Air Tours , you’ll get to see Thunderball Grotto Exuma and many of the amazing sites in the region, like Pig Beach.

Thunderball Grotto – James Bond in the Exuma Cays

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: June 3, 2023

Thunderball Grotto in the Bahamas just may be one of the most exciting snorkelling trips you’ll ever take. The James Bond movie Thunderball was filmed here as well as Never Say Never Again, Splash starring Tom Hanks and Into the Blue with Jessica Alba and Paul Walker.

Thunderball Grotto In The Exuma Cays

Once you visit the Exumas and make your way to Thunderball Grotto, you’ll understand why Hollywood has taken such an interest in this gorgeous location.

snorkelling the bahamas

I don’t think we have ever seen water quite so beautiful as they are in the Bahamas. We never took the Bahamas seriously before our trip to the Exumas. It is a destination that most people that we know, stop off at for a day trip during a Caribbean Cruise.

But as it turns out, The Bahamas are outstanding and the Exumas are undeniably the crown jewel of the island chain. For more James Bond travel, see our visit to the Green Grotto Caves in Jamaica. The setting for Live and Let Die.

You can book a day tour to Thunderball Grotto from Nassau. This highly-rated tour lets you explore Thunderball Grotto, Pig Island, Swim with Sharks, see the indigenous iguana on Guana Cay, and includes flights from Nassau to Staniel Cay, lunch and snacks.

Staniel Cay, Bahamas

james bond thunderball

Our trip took us to a new resort on the block, Embrace Resort on Staniel Cay. The Grand opening is March 2014, but we had a sneak peek thanks to our pal Angie Away. We had the chance to enjoy this quiet cay in the heart of the Exumas where we spent a lot of time in the water.

exuma cays bahamas

Johnny Depp, Oprah, and Faith Hill all have islands nearby, and Staniel Cay is just a few minutes by boat to Thunderball Grotto itself. Sean Connery and the gang hung out at the Yacht Club of Staniel Cay during filming and photos can be seen all around the bar. It’s an island we could have easily hung out at ourselves for a few more weeks. But alas, we only had a few days. Read more about the Bahamas at 18 Best Things to Do In The Bahamas

Thunderball Grotto

grotto bahamas

Thunderball Grotto doesn’t look like much from the outside. When you first see it you wonder what made the Thunderball producers decide to shoot here way back in the ’60s? Read more: Best Travel movies.

It looks small and unimpressive, but as our guide, Jake started explaining what we were about to do, I realized that this was going to be a very special experience.

Jake is a passionate young guy from the States who planned on sailing through the Caribbean and Central American fresh out of college. He got as far as the Bahamas and loved it so much, he never made it past Staniel Cay.

He opened up a dive shop with his dad and eventually bought it outright. Years later, he’s still going strong with his girlfriend and is the Only Dive shop on Staniel Cay.  See everything you can do in the Exuma Cays at Things to do in the Exuma Cays – Dream Trip to the Bahamas

While waiting for the tide to go out, Jake explained to us that Thunderball Grotto is like Swiss cheese. It’s a hollow island with a bunch of holes going through it. There are several entrances where people can swim through the holes to get into the cavern inside.

stanial cay divers bahamas

Some of the tunnels are underwater and you have to swim through a short overhang and hold your breath for a few seconds until you come out the other end. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we dutifully followed Jake into the grotto.

A Beautiful Surprise

thunderball grotto underwater aquarium

We weren’t prepared for what we were about to see. As we swam through the dark cave into the unknown, we were treated to a burst of light in a beautiful cavern.

snorkelling thunderball grotto

The giant chamber in the middle of the island was impressive, but when we looked back towards the cave opening, we were treated to sunbeams lighting up hundreds of colourful fish. Everywhere we turned, rays of light danced in the crystal clear waters within the cave. We felt as if we were in our own life size aquarium.

What it’s like to snorkel in Thunderball Grotto

snorkelling the reef of the exumas

Thunderball Grotto isn’t one of those scary, dark caves that a person normally thinks of, this cave has light coming in from every direction. There are holes in the ceiling, holes in the sides and holes below the surface of the water.

swimming into the grotto

The fish and coral are all lit by the sun for everyone to see. I was expecting to see nothing but dark rock and black water, but like everything in the Bahamas, the water was bright and clear making all the coral and fish easily visible.

I can’t imagine what it was like to film in these caves though. It would make for one difficult film shoot. But it’s a place that feels like it needs to be shown off to the world. We’ve done a lot of snorkelling in our lives, but this was by far the most impressive spot we’ve been to.

Is it Scary to Snorkel Thunderball Grotto

thunderball underwater

Once you are inside the grotto, the tiny holes don’t look near as scary as they are from the outside. There’s something about dipping under the water and not knowing where you will come out that makes people (including me) nervous.

But once you see that it’s just a short dip under the water, leading to a place of beauty it’s not bad at all. Soon everyone is diving under the rocks and through the swim through tunnels. The water is so warm and inviting that we never want to leave.

We are told however, that there are only specific times of the day when people can snorkel and dive in Thunderball Grotto.

At high tide it can be very dangerous for snorkelers as the current can rip you out to sea. Divers can dive at high tide as they’ll be able to swim underwater through all of the openings making for a more exciting experience.

So we swam around exploring the cave a bit before heading out for some more snorkelling time in the open water.

We’ve heard that the Bahamas are a great diving destination and now we believe it. The water is crystal clear, warm and inviting and there is plenty of marine life to enjoy.

Will we go back to the Bahamas?

You betcha!

I’ve been going to Staniel Cay since the 80’s. Next time you’re at the grotto, try cheese wiz. The fish come out of nowhere and surround you. Incredible

Well that looks pretty cool. I wish I knew about this place when I lived in south florida. Now I am on the other side of the planet. Always been a big sean connery fan, rip. Oh well I can’t really complain too much. The sea here is a five minute walk for me. It’s not as clear or warm as the bahamas but I still enjoy swimming in it several times per week.

THUNDERBALL GROTTO WOW, THIS IS AN AWESOME UNDERWATER CAVE SYSTEM TO DIVE… BAHAMAS WOULD BE THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE…THANK YOU FOR SHARING AN INFORMATIVE ARTICLE LIKE THIS “WHAT IT’S LIKE & WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW”

I am exciting to visit this place

Its a wonderful place to visit I like this island very much

So excited to see this on Twitter. I love snorkeling and appreciate you sharing a new possible vacation destination! Great photos!

I’m sitting in Winnipeg, cold and extremely jealous. Photos look amazing! I could really go for some snorkeling.

We’re back home in the cold too and feel your pain. We were just saying how we’d love to escape for the winter, but we’ve gone ahead and planned a bunch of cold weather adventures this year. Oh well, Bahamas will have to wait a bit longer. Can’t wait to go back.

This is surely the underwater paradise what great pics look like must have experiences for every one.

It is an underwater paradise indeed. And yes, we feel that everyone should visit the Exumas. We were so surprised by it!

The Bahamas, I just want to go once in my life that may be with my partner. I am just geared up again after watching this post and I am going there for sure.

I hope you make it there with your partner, It’s wonderful to travel with the one you love. Dave and I certainly loved every minute of it.

Thank you everyone for your comments! We’re happy to see that you find our humble home to be a good place to visit. Dave & Deb’s pictures probably made that choice very simple! These pictures are gorgeous! We’re thrilled to know that you place our snorkeling spots on the upper end of your list! Surely you’ve snorkeled all over the world in the most literal sense so that is very encouraging. 🙂

Thank you very much for taking the time to come and see us and we look forward to seeing you again!!

Thanks for having us Nikki! We had an amazing time and you definitely introduced us to a different Bahamas than we could ever imagine. We’ll be back for sure. And we can’t wait to see the finished product of your beautiful resort.

What an amazing experience!

Thanks, it was!

Gorgeous photos! I really had no idea Bahamas looked anything like this. Worth a trip to try! I look forward to hearing more about it later.

Thanks, we didn’t know they were so beautiful either. Amazing.

Such an absolutely breathtaking locale! Magical! A once in a life time experience!

It was, we agree. Such an amazing site to snorkel and you guys got to dive. Woot.

Awesome photos !Now I feel like going to Thunderball Grotto!.

Oh I have to go here one day in my life. Always looking to tick off 007 locations {it’s good to have a little travel project ;)} and this one looks AMAZING!

Yeah the holes always look scarier from above than they do from down below once you are in the thick of it. Still heart-racing, though! Awesome shots as always. Great stuff!

The Bahamas have long been on my bucketlist. We were actually supposed to honeymoon there back in 2002, but life had other plans. This looks gorgeous and you’ve just re-ignited the fire to go!

Thunderball was one of my favourite films when it came out – so remember Sean Connery zooming about on that underwater bike thing. Must admit to not enjoying scuba diving but sure many others would love this!

This is amazing. I’m obsessed with snorkeling and am always adding to my list of places to snorkel and now this is on there! Love love the picture of you in the light.

My mom and I treated ourselves to a week in the Bahamas and loved every second of it. This brought back some very happy and relaxing memories 🙂

You hit the nail on the head. Relaxing is exactly what we felt the entire time we were there. Love the Bahamas and can’t wait to go back.

BEAUTIFULLLL shots. That’s awesome to be able to free dive and swim from one cave point to another. What housing or camera are you using for the underwater shots?

We used a Lumix TS5 waterproof point and shoot camera. We just bought it and love it. It takes great shots and it’s easy to carry.

Looks absolutely amazing! I unfortunately am one of those people who have only ever been to the Bahamas as part of a cruise, but I would love to go back!

We’re right there with you. Just a cruise for us too. It’s a pleasant surprise and so close! I don’t know why we didn’t go to really explore it sooner!

What a beautiful place. Love the fish. Great photos!

Thanks! Yes indeed it is a beautiful place. We couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was when we looked back once we entered the cave. It took our breath away.

It looks wonderful down there on Thunderball Grotto! I also want to go there. I’ll add the place on my bucket list of must go places.

So glad that you did! I loved that day snorkelling and Staniel Cay is amazing. Who knew that there was such a quiet spot in the Bahamas. I always just thought of Nassau and Grand Bahama.

That is no doubt the most gorgeous snorkeling area could see, I wonder when am I going to see that beauty in person? hopefully soon! Awesome shots by the way. 🙂

You are so right. We’ve done a lot of snorkelling and this is up there as one of the tops! I hope you make it soon too. And thank you for the compliment.

LOVE these shots – especially the one with the light shining on you in the grotto. What a great moment in a weekend of fun & relaxing moments! Can’t wait to travel with y’all again =)

Thanks Angie, That was cool how the picture turned out eh? Thanks to Bret for that one. We can’t wait to travel with you too!

Thunderball Grotto Tour at Thunderball Cave Bahamas

Thunderball grotto bahamas: what is it.

While you may have heard that an Exuma day trip includes a stop at Thunderball Grotto Bahamas, you might not know what that entails.

Thunderball Grotto Exuma is a system of underwater caves and is one of the many hidden gems in the region.

When you see the site from the outside, it doesn’t look like much besides a rock or a small island. However, once you get up close, you’ll quickly see why it’s so famous.

Thunderball Grotto tour is snorkeling into the James Bond Cave from a Staniel Cay Day Trip by boat. Fly into Staniel Cay airport and take the boat to Thunderball Grotto Exuma, a famous underwater cave in the Bahamas Exuma Cays.

Thunderball Grotto Exuma is great for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

Around the cave are several different entry and exit points. As you swim and float through these, you see the light trickle through at various times throughout the day. You also see all sorts of marine life.

On a Thunderball Grotto tour, you have plenty of time to explore the area and make the most out of your time.

Thunderball Filming Locations

What makes Thunderball Grotto Bahamas extra special is the history of Thunderball filming locations in the area.

The name of the caves comes from the 1963 James Bond film  Thunderball , which used it as a filming site.

Thunderball Grotto tour snorkel into the Thudnerball filming locations in the Exuma Bahamas where Sean Connery James Bond 007 filmed at the James Bond Cave "Thunderball Grotto Cave".

An Exuma day trip lets you snorkel around the Thunderball filming locations.

Besides that super spy flick, you can also catch some Thunderball filming locations in the 1983 film  Never Say Never , as well as  Splash  and  Into the Blue .

Its Hollywood history adds an extra layer of appeal to the famous site!

Thunderball Grotto Exuma: Where Is It?

As mentioned, a Thunderball Grotto tour takes you to the Exumas. This is a region of the Bahamas with 365 islands that stretches down into the Caribbean.

Besides the caves, the Exumas are also home to stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and Swimming Pigs Island. The area is also a great place to travel to and appreciate the authentic island atmosphere of the Bahamas.

The James Bond Cave itself is around  80 miles  south of Nassau. Many people who travel to the area do so on a Thunderball Grotto tour.

These day trips let you visit the top sites in the area and then return back to your starting destination that same evening. They’re a great option for anyone for travelers of all types!

You can sign up for an Exuma Pigs day trip from:

  • Georgetown, Exuma

When you sign up for a Thunderball Grotto tour, you can get there by one of two ways:

A Thunderball Grotto tour to the Exumas is a popular choice, but it’s not the best one (unless you’re traveling from Georgetown).

For one thing, the boat ride is lengthy. It takes a couple of hours to reach the Exumas from Nassau, and it’s not even possible to get there by boat from Miami on a day trip.

In addition, the boat rides are often uncomfortable and full of people. There’s no sense of personalization whatsoever.

In contrast, a Thunderball Grotto tour by plane lets you avoid many of these issues.

When you fly by plane, you arrive to the Exumas in:

  • 30 minutes from Nassau or Georgetown
  • 2 hours from Miami

You also get to enjoy spectacular views out of the window and a more comfortable experience, in general. There’s even the option to sign up for private tours.

Thunderball Grotto Tour: What Can You See?

In the caves of Thunderball Grotto, you can see all sorts of incredible marine life. Whether you snorkel or just wade around, you can expect to see some of the following:

  • Tropical fish (yellow tail snappers, angel fish, etc.)

The site is a must-visit destination as it shows that the beauty of the Bahamas is just as pronounced beneath the surface of the water as it is above.

The Exuma Pigs and Other Nearby Sites

When you sign up for an Exuma day trip to the James Bond Cave, that’s not the only site you visit. Whether you’re traveling from Miami, Nassau, or Georgetown, you also get to visit:

  • Staniel Cay , the gateway to the Exumas you fly into
  • Big Major Cay , home to the Exuma Pigs
  • Compass Cay, the place to go swimming with nurse sharks
  • Pipe Creek , where you can find white sand bars
  • An underwater plane wreck perfect for snorkeling
  • Bitter Guana Cay , home to endangered iguanas

A Thunderball Grotto tour takes you to the James Bond Cave, home to marine life and fun Hollywood history.

Besides seeing Thunderball filming locations, Bahamas day trips also let you visit the Exuma Pigs and many other attractions in the area.

Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto: An Incredible Snorkeling Spot in the Exumas

In a paradise known for its amazing snorkeling spots, Thunderball Grotto is hands-down one of the best in the Exuma Cays. Located in the middle of the Exumas, near Staniel Cay, Thunderball Grotto is stunningly beautiful; a sprawling cave that you can only reach by a quick swim.

There’s a reason this spot was featured in 1965’s James Bond film Thunderball. It’s a place that looks more like a movie set than real life. Of all the destinations for yachting in the Exumas, Thunderball Grotto is one that can’t be missed. Not to mention, it’s near numerous other must-see attractions, like the swimming sharks of Compass Cay , the iguanas of Allen Cay, and the world-famous Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

Think you might want to take in Thunderball Grotto on your next trip to the Exumas? Here’s everything you need to know about the James Bond cave, including how to get there, what to expect, and nearby attractions.

Getting to Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto earns its nickname as the James Bond cave. Not only was it featured in the 1965 film, but it actually reprised its role in 1983’s Never Say Never Again. More recently, the grotto was featured in the Tom Hanks’ Splash, and the Jessica Alba and Paul Walker movie Into the Blue.

Arriving. Thunderball Grotto is only reachable by water, which is one reason it’s such a favorite destination on yacht charters. The grotto is in one of the best locations in the Exumas, directly between Staniel Cay and Big Major Cay (home of the swimming pigs ). In fact, it’s close enough to both islands that you can actually swim there (although it’s best if you’re a strong swimmer).

Another advantage: The James Bond cave is only about 80 miles south of Nassau, and as such, it’s a top itinerary stop on Nassau charters to the Exumas .

Where to Stop

  • Staniel Cay Yacht Club – The world-famous Staniel Cay yacht club has a beautiful marina, with accommodations for yachts up to 200 feet.
  • Big Major Cay – There are several moorings on Big Major’s southside. Essentially, at these anchorages, you’re as close to the grotto as you can get.
  • Compass Cay – Although Compass Cay is a few islands away to the north, it’s home to one of the best marinas in the region. (Not to mention, you can swim with pet nurse sharks here!)

What to Expect at Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto looks unassuming from the sea; in fact, it’s just a plain limestone formation, with a bit of water rushing underneath. After a short swim, though, you’ll see why so many visitors flock here.

As you swim up to the grotto, you’ll notice several hidden entrances. Dive and snorkel under the water, and pass into the cave. The cave opens up to a gigantic domed rotunda, and the sunbeams in through a large hole at the top, casting brilliant light on the aquamarine water. It’s a truly spectacular sight. The lagoon in the grotto is the perfect place for an afternoon dip.

During your visit, here are a few of the things you can do:

  • The cave is a rich coral ecosystem; as such, visitors regularly get swarmed by colorful tropical fish while swimming and there are many beautiful coral formations to explore. This is a great beginner snorkeling spot, and there are many more nearby as well.
  • Rock climb. The limestone walls of the cave offer a number of jumping platforms, if you’re looking for a Thunderball Grotto jump in point. Scale the walls and jump in for a thrill.
  • Soak up the sun. Neighboring Staniel and Big Major cays have several sandy beaches, including Pirate Beach on Staniel and the world-famous Pig Beach on Big Major. Swim or take a tender ride to the beach and relax in the sun!

Thanks to its close proximity to other great destinations, a visit to Thunderball Grotto is the perfect day trip before heading on to Staniel Cay, Compass Cay, or the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park to the north.

What to Do Near Thunderball Grotto: Top Attractions

If there’s one area in the Exumas to visit, it’s here. Start your journey at Staniel Cay, home to an airport with daily service into Nassau. In addition to Thunderball Grotto, other must-see attractions include:

  • Swimming with the Pigs – The swimming pigs of Big Major Cay are one of the highlights of the Exumas. Another benefit: Pig Beach on the cay is within swimming distance to Thunderball Grotto. Go visit the friendly pigs after a day of adventure.
  • Explore the Disappearing Beaches – Pipe Creek Sandbar is a beautiful beach that can only be visited at low tide. Stop in for a beach day, while it lasts!
  • Dive a Plane Wreck – Another amazing snorkeling spot near Thunderball Grotto is the cartel plane wreck. Sometimes called the Exuma Plane Wreck, this snorkel spot is visible in the crystal-clear waters and is great for a quick dip.
  • Cocktails at Staniel Cay – Staniel Cay Yacht Club is a historic club, known for its breezy open-air vibes and excellent food and drink. Stop in for dinner or cocktails and to enjoy a dazzling sunset.
  • Hiking at Bitter Guana Cay – Located just south of Staniel Cay, Bitter Guana is a beautiful island, that’s home to beach iguanas. Stop here to snap photos with the endangered Northern Bahamian rock iguanas.
  • Swimming with Sharks at Compass Cay – Located several islands to the north, the marina at Compass Cay is where you’ll find resident nurse sharks. Swim with the sharks, before enjoying a cold beer at the marina café.

According to movie stars, tourists, and Bond enthusiasts the world over, The Thunderball Grotto is one of the most breathtaking spots in the world.

So much so, that Oprah, Johnny Depp, and Faith Hill all supposedly have their own islands nearby. Who can blame them? The waters are straight out of a fantasy land, and the whole area of the Bahamas its super glam and famous for all the right reasons.

The people are kind and generous. It’s the site of many exotic movies. And the snorkelling is among the best in the entire world.

Visiting James Bond’s Bahamas

Where Was Thunderball Filmed?

If you’ve seen the fourth Bond film, Thunderball, then you can maybe even recall the exquisite background of the film. The Bahamas are James Bond’s second favourite travel destination, after Jamaica.

The romantic allure of the Bahamas is a running theme throughout the whole film. Casino Royale also features some juicy shots from this sacred space.

The green waters, the white sands, and the incredible caves are among so many gorgeous parts of the Thunderball Grotto.

Thunderball grotto

The Bahamas are formed from about 700 islands, of which only 40 are inhabited. They all stretch over about 650 miles of ocean from the east coast of Florida right up to the Caribbean.

One of the smallest islands, New Providence (with the capital of Nassau), is the political, tourist, and economic centre of the entire country. Off the coast of this central island is Staniel Cay, and that’s where you’ll find the famous Thunderball Grotto.

The incredible sub-tropical climate and the stunning beaches have made the Bahamas an extremely popular full-time destination for sun seekers. Incredibly, tourism produces more than 50% of their national income!

And quick fact: The Bahamas also enjoy a high standard of living because of their banking economy. Investors from all over the world are drawn to this tax haven… a perfect setting for an international agent of Bond’s status!

Useful Information About Thunderball Grotto, Exuma

Thunderball was filmed five decades ago, but you will still find plenty of people in the Bahamas today who can point out where particular scenes were shot.

Hotel clerks, self-appointed tourist guides, and taxi drivers will show you the house where the production office was located. Some of them will even tell you that they met Sean Connery in person. Apparently he’s both a fine and likeable fellow!

In 1965, Bond first met Domino on a beach on the north coast of Paradise Island. In the movie, he chatted her up by pretending to have issues with his boat engine. Domino helped him out with her boat, and they land ashore at Paradise Beach, just in front of what is now Club Med.

I can only imagine the stories that are told by the employees at this resort! And how much the tourists brag to their friends when they tell them where they’re staying…

”Bro, we’re staying at the beach where James Bond first met Domino.” I mean the story itself would be worth the trip.

From the outside, Thunderball Grotto may not seem like much, but visitors are often in for a huge surprise when they get past the initial entry points and into the glorious caves that are all lit by the sun.

Thunderball grotto

Nothing creepy about these caves (although I’d still be petrified to get stuck in there and drown a horrible death because that’s my biggest nightmare). Apparently it’s spacious and the snorkelling is just incredible.

Thunderball grotto snorkeling

Snorkelling at Thunderball Grotto is among the best in the world. There is a giant chamber in the middle of the island, and when you look back from there, you can catch the sunbeams lighting up hundreds of tropical fish.

It feels, according to some visitors, like your own life-sized aquarium. Rays of light catch your body in the ridiculously clear waters of the caves, and you can’t help but feel like you’re in a bit of a movie yourself.

Thunderball grotto (no) fishing & conservation

Conservation is a very high priority for the country, and Thunderball Grotto is no exception. These fantastic underwater caves that were used for filming of two James Bond films are, after all, a precious treasure of the country.

Because they also bring in so much money to the country, it serves them to keep everything pristine for years to come. It’s been a bit of a journey over the years, because naturally tourism brings its own pollution with the revenue.

There tends to be a lot of traffic with all of the snorkelling, and sometimes it gets so crowded that people end up bumping into each other when they are admiring all the corals and pristine waters.

Apparently the best way to see Thunderball Grotto is to stay at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, and then visit when the boat tours are not present.

How To Find Thunderball Grotto

There is no missing this tourist attraction! The whole island knows about it, so you won’t have a problem. There are signs that lead you right to the entrance, and there will be lots of other people who are looking to join in on the fun.

It’s best to get to Thunderball Grotto early and at low tide if possible. There’s a sweet spot to find when it’s as beautiful as all the other times, but not so packed with people. Your tour guide will help you figure all of that out!

Worth every penny- 007 Thunderball Tour, The Exumas

My husband and I recently went to the Exumas for our honeymoon in August. We had heard about the waters of the Exumas and about excursions you could take to see the best that the cays had to offer. We were staying at Sandals Emerald Bay and prior to our trip, I had done some research about a few different tour options. Originally we were going to go on the half day ocean safari tour but my husband was adamant about swimming with pigs! The 007 tour is twice as much as any other tour but we figured, hey- let's make this a vacation to remember. BOY OH BOY! Let me tell you--- To us, it was worth every last penny. Ray and Justin (father and son) were the Captain and First Mate- They are 5th or 6th generation Bahamians and knew so much about the waters, the cays, the houses, the "secrets" of the area- it was awesome. They were fun, knowledgeable and made you feel right at home. The first stop was the sunken mermaid and it only got better from there. They had coolers full of beers, waters, offered us snacks, we stopped for lunch at Staniel Cay and it was by far the best meal we had of the trip. Fresh caught fish from that morning- delicious. Loved the atmosphere. The pigs were awesome, the iguanas, the tropical fish, the snorkeling and the sand bar- Oh the sand bar was awesome. It was paradise. Plain and simple. I would do this excursion every year if I could. If you are considering the trip...DO IT! I can't tell you how many memories we made that day. Thank you Ray and Justin- You made a lasting impression on us!

007 thunderball tour exuma

You have to try this at least once in your life. We were lucky enough to find a great deal through WestJet to the Bahamas. We spent a few days at Atlantis Resort then travelled to Exuma. Captain Ray took us out on his tour and all I can say is WOW. It is hard to believe that there is still a place as beautiful as this was un touched by big developers and thank god for that. Captain Ray is the best. He treated us like family ... cant wait to go back again.

We went on the daylong 007 Thunderball tour, and it was by far the best excursion we've ever taken. Ray and Justin are warm, entertaining, and full of knowledge about the Exuma Cays - from its history to its local (celebrity!) gossip. Top highlights of the day, for us, were swimming with giant wild pigs; feeding large iguanas and sharks; seeing celebrity islands; then collecting colourful shells on a beautiful, isolated sand bar. The fish and coral at the Thunderball Grotto were the best we've ever seen. My partner was nervous about snorkelling in a cave - Justin quickly got him comfortable with the equipment & technique (and was always there to assist). The included lunch was delicious, and the beautiful yacht club setting gave us the perfect opportunity to chat with others from around the world who had joined us on the tour. We left the day feeling as though it was worth every penny, and half our friends don't believe our stories when we describe the vacation. If you're visiting Exuma, this is a must-do.

We took the Thunderball 007 tour, this tour is so much fun. You really have no idea how expansive the Exumas are until you do a tour like this . We had so many great experiences and didn't want the day to end. Ray and his family are honestly the nicest people we met on the island, they were so accomodating and easy to deal with. This trip is 5* all the way and I can't express enough that you need to do this if you are coming to Great Exuma.

007 thunderball tour exuma

If you are considering taking this tour but are reluctant about the cost ($750 for 2 from Sandals), it is well worth every penny. What you will experience is like nothing else. The best part was the swimming pigs. As our boat approached this cay, four pigs literally swam out to us. I was expecting cute little pink Wilbur (Charlotte's Web) pigs, but these were huge hogs. We fed them hotdogs and they couldn't get enough. Word of caution...I tried to put on my mask and snorkel to see what else was in the vicinity and the pigs came after me, thinking it was food. I quickly threw my mask/snorkel back on the boat. The entire trip was outstanding. Swimming with sharks and stingrays, lunch at Staniel Cay Yacht Club and of course Thunderball Grotto. Snorkeling through tunnels and into caves was incredible. It's hard to believe that we were actually inside a cay. Like other reviewers, this review does not describe how amazing this tour really was. If you are visiting Exuma, this is a MUST!

007 thunderball tour exuma

We booked their 007 Thunderball Grotto through Sandals resort. It was pricey, but worth every penny. You cover nearly 140 miles through the Exuma Cays in a powerboat that can go through 10 inches of water. We made many stops, including two snorkel spots, swam with pigs, swam with sharks, etc, etc. The lunch at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club was awesome. I didn't want to leave! Thank you to Captain Ray and Justin, they made this a great trip. If you only go the Exumas once, you must do this tour.
