My favourite aspect of Sports Team is their incredible stage presence that encapsulates the audience and makes them have to nod along and smile. The mixture of the witty and awesome lyrics and lead singer, Alex Rice’s charimsa and charm create and friendly and inclusive community among the audience. Energy never burns out at a sports team concert. In addition Rough Trade Bristol is a trendy and respected venue that allows for intimate performances. All in all, it rocked!

Sports Team was insane! They are one of the best U.K. bands right now. They are headed to Europe but if you ever get an opportunity, see them live!

The opener, Ganser, is now one of my new all time favorites. See this band!

Fantastic band with a great live sound full of energy . Front man Alex is worth a watch as he’s quite unique. Tight band on top form who looked like they was enjoying themselves. Lovely little venue with a good sound .

Superb. Alex Rice is God-with-a-bruised-chest. The energy level is superb. The mix was poor in terms of the vocals, which is a pity as the lyrics are to be savoured. But everybody knew them anyway. Leadmill next please.

Sports Team: “We’ve got to the point where we’re just inevitable”

Ahead of difficult second album 'Gulp!', the six-piece tell Ali Shutler about cutting Jools Holland from the record, "ruining the charts for everyone" and why they still see themselves as "outsiders"

sports team

F rom the release of their debut single ‘Stanton’ in 2017 to selling out London’s O2 Academy Brixton in late 2021, Sports Team ’s story has long felt like a miraculous underdog tale. A ragtag group of mates uniting to inject some much-needed fun into guitar music, all while inspiring a diehard fanbase? You can see the Hollywood trailer now.

Their against-the-odds victories so far have included reaching number two in the UK Albums Chart with their 2020 debut record ‘Deep Down Happy’ and being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize , losing out to Lady Gaga and Michael Kiwanuka respectively. “We were a new band, so our mentality was, ‘Let’s put out a record and see what happens,’” vocalist Alex Rice reflects to NME . “It actually went well, so there’s pressure with album two.”

Now set for release in September , ‘Gulp!’ is the quintessential difficult second album. The title is inspired by the naively tenacious cartoon character Wile E. Coyote – specifically the moment he runs straight off a cliff in pursuit of the Road Runner. “For a split second, [Coyote is] suspended in mid-air before falling – ‘Gulp!’ is the moment you hope you stay suspended,” says Rice.

Written early on in lockdown when their touring and release plans for ‘Deep Down Happy’ were unceremoniously scrapped, Sports Team had a bulk of ‘Gulp!’ ready to go by the end of 2020. With no idea when live music would return, though, the band continued to tinker. “We tried a lot ,” explains Rice. “We got a horn section in, we made our producer [Burke Reid] try a bunch of different mixes; Jools Holland even got involved. Because we’re idiots, though, we ended up going back to most of the stuff we did originally. I don’t think Jools even made the album.”

Describing the legendary musician and TV host as “the nicest man around”, the band aren’t worried about any potentially awkward meetings in the future after ultimately scrapping his contribution. “We went to his studio in London, which he has decked out like a train station and there’s all these incredible pictures of him with The Beatles . He was offering us sandwiches his wife had made,” guitarist Rob Knaggs recalls. Holland then laid down about 50 takes, before discussing his favourite fish and chip shop in Margate and promising to take Knaggs next time he was down on the coast. “He’s not been,” grins Rice. “[Holland’s] a good bloke, though. He was obviously paid a fee by the label but donated it back to us, saying he knows how hard it is for bands.”

‘Deep Down Happy’ was a coming-of-age celebration, bundled together with the everyday anxieties and angst that you get in your mid-20s. “You can’t really continue to do that when you’ve spent the last five years in a professional band, because you’re not living a normal life,” Rice acknowledges.

Today, four-sixths of Sports Team are sitting outside a London pub talking to NME over lunchtime pints, while a majority of people their age are figuring out if they can afford a Pret for lunch due to the cost of living crisis. “A lot of ‘Gulp!’ has ended up more human, tackling these bigger themes that everyone experiences. It’s about challenging whether the way you’re living is living well,” Knaggs says. “I thought the first record was darker than anyone said it was. This record, I think, is really funny, but everyone keeps asking if I’m OK. There are a lot of songs about death, but I guess that’s what happens when you write during a pandemic and you’re forced to confront death on a daily basis.”

New festival anthem ‘The Drop’ is about living an unfulfilling life and “staring death in the face”, but was actually written by Knaggs to “try and make our producer, who never smiles, laugh”. Then there’s the chirpy ‘Getting Better’ (with a chorus that features the line “‘ Cause it’s only getting better ‘til it starts off getting worse / And they put you in the garden under six old feet of dirt ”), which is their take on Monty Python’s ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life’.

“Because the subject matter is dark, we did try it as a bleak-sounding song. But it just didn’t work,” explains bassist Oli Dewdney. “We just couldn’t put out a miserable song with no joy. In the end, it had to be this energetic, fun song, but that’s what we do best – hiding bleak lyrics in this sunny sound. It needed to be cathartic.”

Knaggs hopes ‘Gulp!’ isn’t relentlessly bleak, but, as Rice explains, “music is the antidote for so many people right now”. “You go to a festival or a gig, and there’s this sense of community where you can confront these bleak things with your mates. It’s a simplistic way of dealing with life’s problems, but it’s one of those rare spaces where you feel connected to other people and can take on that shared anxiety.” Drummer Al Greenwood adds: “The pandemic was obviously really awful for us, but who wants to hear a band moan?”

Sports Team wrote ‘Gulp!’ while living together in a south London house, before they then spent a month in the studio recording. It’s little wonder, then, that there’s an intensity to the record. “Conflict is part of the band,” explains Knaggs, after confirming that getting six people to agree on anything is a nightmare. “You watch Bohemian Rhapsody and Brian May is there saying, ‘I’ve got a great idea for a song’ before he starts clapping, and the riff for ‘We Will Rock You’ comes out instantly while everyone’s smiling. Our thing is more everyone sitting in a corner, aggressively trying to not do the thing the other person wants us to do.”

Dewdney adds: “We got into a full-blown argument about a chord in this terrible Christmas song we were trying to write. It’s horrible, but you just see red.” The band, it should be stated, have tried to secure their pensions by writing a festive number numerous times, but “it just never works”.

sports team

D espite Knaggs going into lockdown loving Pavement and coming out the other side wanting to make big band music like early Bryan Ferry (whose name comes up a lot during our hour-long chat), ‘Gulp!’ isn’t a huge departure from ‘Deep Down Happy’. “There are songs like ‘Light Industry’ that we wouldn’t have been able to attempt before, but it’s still the six of us trying to make them work live as a band,” Dewdney explains. “It’s not a giant leap – it’s still a Sports Team record – but we’ve definitely progressed.”

After headlining Brixton, the band have also realised that you can’t go on to stages that big and “play songs like you’re still at [east London boozer] the Old Blue Last”, so ‘Gulp!’ was written for those larger rooms. “It’s something Wolf Alice and Fontaines D.C. do really well: create this fuller sound without losing the intensity or connection,” says Rice. “Anyway, I think the wankiest thing a band can do is change their sound. We say we’re now influenced by Bryan Ferry, but, really, we’ve just put some horns on the record. You realise how lucky you are to have anything break through the noise. Whatever we conjured up between the six of us [has] resonated with people. You don’t lose sight of how extraordinary and strange that is, so you don’t really want to change everything.”

Still, the band aren’t keen on repeating past glories. ‘Deep Down Happy’’s breakout track was the cutting ‘Here’s The Thing’, an evergreen, snarling anthem of fury that’s the perfect soundtrack to the latest political scandal (“ Everything in life is fair and that’s the rules / It’s all just lies, lies, lies, lies ”). There’s nothing as blatantly and outwardly political on ‘Gulp!’ because “the moment you start chasing past successes or looking at ‘the data’, you lose the joy,” says Knaggs. “People can smell the desperation as well.” Greenwood adds: “There’s commentary in all the songs on this album. It’s just perhaps not as in-your-face.”

Sports Team initially set out to prove that guitar music could be fun without losing its sincerity, and ‘Gulp!’ is coming at a time where “there’s more bands like us”. When ‘Deep Down Happy’ was released, the scene was very post-punk-focused. “There’s a lot of good bands, but we didn’t love [that sound]. Now you’ve got bands like Wet Leg and Yard Act ,” Rice, who thinks the former’s ‘Chaise Longue’ has the same yearning, angst and energy as a lot of Sports Team tracks, says. Yard Act, the vocalist continues, “sing from a similar perspective. It’s nice to be releasing an album at a time where you feel part of something a bit bigger.”

This new wave of bands is breaking through, Rice says, “because guitar music [has] got a bit up itself”. “People want to be entertained – they don’t want a lecture. They want to dig into the music themselves and find their own path. Some bands really patronise their audience, especially if they’re young. If you’re not giving them an album that makes them feel good or they’re getting something out of it, what’s the point?”

Still, despite narrowly missing out on a Number One album last time round, Sports Team are putting less emphasis on the charts with album two. “We ruined the charts for everyone, really,” Rice says with a wink, alluding to band’s unashamed social media push for the top spot. “Now you see bands with a Rishi Sunak-style campaign to get that Number One album. You’ve got to find new things to entertain people… if it’s going to be entertaining for a group of six mates, other people are probably going to enjoy it as well.” Knaggs adds with a grin: “Fun is the key to our relentlessly bleak album about death.”

Sports Team

Being so vocal about their likes, dislikes and ambitions inevitably means that not everyone is going to be a fan of Sports Team’s chaos. “Just existing on the internet means you’re going to find people who hate everything you do pretty quickly,” Dewdney says with a shrug. Rice then points out that things “feel a bit less divisive at the moment”, before threatening to log on and change that.

“We’ve got to the point where we’re just inevitable,” says Knaggs. “With that first album, people on Twitter genuinely hoped they could end it. There was a small chance they could stop us, but now we’re endemic.”

Rice believes Sports Team will “always annoy people who want to be true artists”. He adds: “There are people who go on-stage, wear all black and carefully curate this polished image. Our thing is more about accepting you’re this flawed character and being open about everything. That helps other people feel like they can do it as well. Hopefully it empowers people to feel like they can change their life.”

That sense of giving it a go and seeing what happens has always been part of Sports Team’s empowering, if reckless, optimism. They’ve been talking about headlining Wembley since the beginning and, according to Rice, it’s still a genuine ambition.

“You can smell the fear on people when they stop believing in what they’re doing,” the frontman says. “Even if it’s 100 people in a room, you want to watch someone who really thinks they’re a star. You don’t want to watch something normal because you meet enough normal people in your everyday life. With music, you want to see something extremely odd that might actually go somewhere. The second we lose that, it’s over. There are enough self-conscious lads with guitars.”

With that in mind, Rice believes Sports Team “are still outsiders”. Yet, he says, “it feels fucking great when there are 5000 people together in a room, with that us-against-the-world mentality.”

Savannah Bananas travel team to hit the road to five cities on 'World Tour' in 2022

sports team tour 2022

The Savannah Bananas' brand of a baseball circus traveled so well in 2021 despite pandemic protocols, the team has expanded its reach for 2022.

The Bananas announced Tuesday the schedule for its professional travel team for six cities, including two games in Savannah, next March and April.

After consistently selling out home games at Grayson Stadium, the franchise had devised a "World Tour " in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic scaled back those grand plans. Instead, the 2021 One City World Tour went to Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. With seating limited to 3,500 for social distancing, the game was sold out and a second game was added, and then sold out, last March 26-27.

The 2022 Banana Ball World Tour received thousands of nominations from fans in over 400 cities and 18 countries, the team reported. Those nominations were narrowed down to Chicago; Kansas City; Mobile, Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach, Florida; Durham, N.C.; and Charleston, S.C., as the top-10 front-runners.

Members of the front office — including owner Jesse Cole, team president Jared Orton, and video and marketing staffers — visited the stadiums and met with local officials in government, tourism and business.

“We were blown away by the number of Bananas fans who nominated their cities. We never imagined we’d have so much support to take the Bananas show all over the country,” Cole said in a press release. “After listening to the fans and visiting with our front-runners, we’re thrilled to be able to come to these amazing cities and ballparks.”

The 2022 tour opens in Savannah at Grayson Stadium on Friday and Saturday, March 11-12. The team will then travel to Daytona Beach, Montgomery, West Palm Beach,  Columbus and Birmingham.

Orton felt an almost emotional connection to Birmingham's Rickwood Field, built in 1910 and known as the oldest ballpark in America.

"You walked in there and you almost felt like the ghost of Babe Ruth was going to walk around the corner and shake your hand," Orton said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "That's going to be one we really look forward to. Of course, all of the stadiums have their perks and their quirks and their character. There was something about Birmingham that really stood out to us."

There were some logistical issues with flying teams to Chicago or Kansas City, as they have traveled by bus. Orton didn't rule out amending the schedule with another city.

"There might be something in the works for an extra city in the next week or so," Orton said. "We've actually heard from some people just in the past couple of days before we narrowed down the top few. We might have one more up our sleeve if we could get it nailed down."

A look at the road schedule

Daytona Beach, March 18

Jackie Robinson Ballpark is home to the Daytona Tortugas, a minor-league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The ballpark was built in 1914 and is famous for its namesake, Jackie Robinson, who played at the stadium in 1946 after recently signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Montgomery, March 25

Riverwalk Stadium has consistently won awards for its unique design which connects the ballpark to a historic railroad depot built on the site of a Civil War prison in Montgomery. The stadium is home to the Montgomery Biscuits, Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

West Palm Beach, April 1

The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches is a state-of-the-art spring training facility for the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros.

Columbus, April 14

Golden Park was refurbished to host softball for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. However, like the original Municipal Stadium in Savannah, Golden Park was originally constructed on the site in 1926 and has played host to greats throughout baseball history.

Birmingham, April 16

Rickwood Field, “The Oldest Ballpark in America,” was built in 1910 based off the design of Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Rickwood Field famously hosted the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues of Professional Baseball featuring legendary Satchel Paige and others. Of the 263 players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, over 140 played at Rickwood Field.

Get to know Banana Ball

In addition to the cast of characters, dancers, performers, mascots and musicians, the Bananas are bringing their own twist on the traditional baseball format to the world tour. Banana Ball has rules to increase the pace of the game and create more action and drama. Rules include no bunting, no walks, a two-hour time limit, fans catching foul balls for outs, batters stealing first base, and a one-on-one tiebreaker showdown at the end of the game.

The Bananas Premier Team will face off against its rival, the Party Animals — not unlike the Harlem Globetrotters and regular foil the Washington Generals, except with a level playing field on talent. The rosters for both teams — about 20 spots apiece —  will be filled through tryouts by independent players including former Bananas and possibly former professional minor leagues.

More honors: Savannah Bananas coach Tyler Gillum is the Coastal Plain League Coach of the Year

The Bananas have already signed two all-time Bananas, catcher Bill LeRoy and pitcher Kyle Luigs (a Richmond Hill High School graduate), who each played four seasons for the summer collegiate league team in the Coastal Plain League.

They were standouts in the field, and stand out basically anywhere in their bright Banana-yellow uniforms.

"We were on the beach in West Palm Beach and we're trying to film this quick promo," Orton recalled, "and people are coming up to Bill and Kyle, trying to take pictures with them. Two players in yellow uniforms on the beach. It's a different sight."

When the Savannah Bananas are not on tour, their college counterparts have played home games in front of sold-out crowds of 4,000-plus at Grayson Stadium for five straight years.

More: City of Savannah COVID-19 restrictions lead Bananas to cancel two games

The baseball goes hand-in-hand with family friendly entertainment in and around the stadium before, during and after the games. The Bananas have played in kilts, their first base coach is a professional dancer, and there are skits and interactions with fans during and between innings.

sports team tour 2022

The 25 best sports teams of 2022

Individual accomplishments are special, but nothing truly beats team success. In 2022, there were many impressive team performances, spanning both professional and amateur sports. So with that in mind, here is our list of the 25 notable teams from the 2022 calendar year. Listed in chronological order.

College Football: Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs began 2022 by avenging their most recent loss -- 41-24 to Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship Game -- by beating the Crimson Tide 33-18 in the national title contest on Jan. 10. Since losing to the Tide, Georgia is 15-0, the No. 1 ranked squad in the College Football Playoff and favorite to become the first repeat national champion since Alabama from the 2011-'12 seasons. In 14 2022 games, prior to the CFP semifinals, the Bulldogs have averaged 38.7 points, allowed 13.1 per contest, yielded more than 22 points just once, and won by fewer than 10 only one time.

NFL: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams went 0-3 in November 2021 and sat 7-4 in Week 12. However, they would lose only one more time the rest of the way -- 27-24 at home to San Francisco in the regular-season finale. When it came time for the postseason in the early weeks of 2022, Los Angeles turned it on, knocking off reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay and Tom Brady on the road. Then, avenging that defeat to the 49ers with a 20-17 home victory in the NFC Championship Game. Despite trailing Cincinnati 20-13 late in the third quarter of Super Bowl LVI, the Rams rallied and went ahead for good when Matthew Stafford (283 passing yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions) threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp (eight receptions, 92 yards, two touchdowns) with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter . L.A. hung on to win 23-20 for the franchise's second such title and Stafford's first after toiling for 12 years in Detroit.

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals might have fallen short of winning the franchise's first Super Bowl. However, budding stars in quarterback Joe Burrow (1,105 passing yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 68.3 completion percentage in four 2022 postseason games), receiver Ja'Marr Chase (25 receptions, 368 receiving yards in four 2022 postseason games), and kicker Evan McPherson (14-of-14 on field goals in four 2022 postseason games) won over plenty of fans with their performance in the early days of 2022. The upstart Bengals won their three playoff games by a combined 13 points. McPherson kicked the game-winning 52-yard field goal  as time expired to win 19-16 at Tennessee in the AFC Divisional round. He then  banged through a 31-yarder in overtime for that 27-24 victory at Kansas City in the conference title contest to erase a 21-3 first-half hole.

Olympic Hockey: Canada women

After settling for the silver medal at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the Canadian women were determined to regain their spot at the top of the Olympic mountain. And, they didn't disappoint their faithful, claiming gold for the fifth time in the seven Games the sport has been held. Paced by Sarah Nurse (18 points) and veteran Marie-Philip Poulin (17 points), Team Canada outscored its opponents 57-10 while winning all seven games. After downing the rival United States 4-2 in group play, the Canadians avenged their 2018 gold-medal game defeat to the Americans with a 3-2 triumph in the Feb. 17 title contest.

NCAA Women's Basketball: South Carolina

When it came to unfinished business, the Gamecocks got the job done. The Gamecocks lost 66-65 to eventual national champion Stanford in a thrilling and emotional national semifinal contest in 2021. Then a year later, as the overall No. 1 seed, South Carolina essentially rolled through the 2022 NCAA Tournament field. Behind the play of star Aliyah Boston, South Carolina finished 35-2 and won the program's second national title after winning 64-49 over Connecticut on April 3.  Of note, the Gamecocks' championship-game victory marked the first NCAA title-game loss for UConn coach Geno Auriemma. To no surprise, South Carolina opened the 2022-23 season atop The Associated Press poll and was undefeated through its first 11   games.

NCAA Men's Basketball: Saint Peter's

The men's NCAA Tournament is good for a few feel-good moments each season. While there are some worthy candidates, afterthought Saint Peter's was the undisputed Cinderella standout at the 2022 Big Dance. Entering the event at 19-11 after winning the MAAC tournament title, the Peacocks, from Jersey City, N.J., caught fire in beating No. 2 seed Kentucky, seventh-seeded Murray State, and No. 3 Purdue to become the first No. 15 seed to reach the Elite Eight. Sadly, that fabulous run ended with a 20-point loss to North Carolina in the regional finals. Yet, Saint Peter's, led by Daryl Banks (13.5 points per game in the 2022 NCAA Tournament), and its remarkable tournament accomplishment should not be forgotten.

NCAA Men's Basketball: Kansas

There was plenty of parity heading into the 2022 NCAA Tournament, but Kansas was the only No. 1 seed to reach the Final Four. It wasn't entirely an easy run, but after routing Miami, Fla., in the Elite Eight and Villanova in the national semifinal, the Jayhawks, behind double-doubles from David McCormack and Christian Braun, overcame a 15-point halftime hole to outscore North Carolina 47-29 in the second half to win 72-69 in the national final on April 4. It was the fourth national title, and second under coach Bill Self , for Kansas (34-6).

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid

Meet the new boss. Which pretty much is the same as the old boss. Real Madrid extended its record Champions League title count to 14 with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the final on May 28 in Paris. Vinícius Júnior scored the lone goal just prior to the hour mark for Real Madrid, which has won its last five Champions League titles over a nine-year stretch. Joining Vinicius on the tournament's "Team of the Season" were Real teammates Thibaut Courtois, Luka Modrić, and Karim Benzema , who led the event with 15 goals.

Women's College Softball: Oklahoma

Winning national championships is nothing new for the Sooners' softball program. Oklahoma won its sixth title this season, and for the second time in seven years, it repeated as national champion. Behind two-time national player of the year Jocelyn Alo (all-time NCAA home run leader with 132) and Big 12 Freshman and Pitcher of the Year Jordy Bahl, the Sooners went 59-3. Including 5-1 at the Women's College World Series, where they outscored rival Texas 26-6 to sweep the two-game final series in early June.

NBA: Golden State Warriors

After missing the playoffs the previous two seasons, and with superstar Stephen Curry healthy and back to form, the Warriors proved they could return to the top of the NBA hill. Golden State didn't win the Pacific Division and had the third-best record (53-29) in the Western Conference during the 2021-22 regular season. But, paced by Curry (27.4 ppg in the 2022 playoffs) and the triumphant return of Klay Thompson (19.0 ppg in 2022 playoffs), it went 16-6 in the postseason. After going down 2-1 in the NBA Finals to Boston, the Warriors won three straight by a combined 33 points to claim their fourth title in eight seasons. Curry averaged 31.2 points and shot 43.7% from 3-point range to win Finals MVP.

NBA: Boston Celtics

Sure, the Celtics could not seal the deal and win their first NBA title since 2008, but last season was also a sign that the franchise might be back. Led by modern-day stars Jayson Tatum , Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart , the Celtics won their first division title since 2016-17 and were back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010. It also might end up being a springboard to even greater heights in 2022-23. Through its first 31 games of the 2022-23 campaign, Boston was 22-9 with the look of a team ready to take care of some unfinished business.

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning

OK, the Lightning came up short in their quest to become the first team to win three consecutive Stanley Cups since the New York Islanders from 1980-'83. But Tampa Bay did reach the Stanley Cup Final for a third straight campaign in '22. And it wasn't easy, considering the strength of the Eastern Conference, which featured eight teams to post at least 100 points, including three with more than Tampa's 110. The Lightning needed seven games to beat Toronto, then swept Florida and took down the upstart New York Rangers in six to win the conference. However, even with stellar postseason play from Nikita Kucherov (27 playoff points in 2022), Ondrej Palat (21 points), and Steven Stamkos (11 playoff goals), the Lightning lost to Colorado in six games of the Final. Still, in a sport that's often considered the hardest to repeat as champion, Tampa Bay continues to display an amazing level of consistency.

NHL: Colorado Avalanche

Speaking of Colorado. If the Avalanche did not win the Stanley Cup, it might have been a case of serious underachievement. Led by stars Nathan MacKinnon , Conn Smythe Trophy winner Cale Makar (29 playoff points in 2022), and Mikko Rantanen , the Avs posted a Western Conference-best 119 points -- second-most in the NHL. In the playoffs, Colorado opened with a sweep of Nashville and did the same to Edmonton in the Western Conference final series. The Avs won the first two against Tampa Bay and eventually the franchise's third Stanley Cup with a 2-1 victory in Game 6 on June 26.

UEFA European Women's Championship: England

While the English men fell short in their quest to win the most recent Euros, the Lionesses ensured that "football is coming home." In storybook fashion, amid its own backyard at Wembley Stadium, on the last day of July, England's women's national team needed an extra-time winner from Chloe Kelly, who followed with her own Brandi Chastain moment, to beat eight-time winner Germany, 2-1 for its first Euro title. While the result meant pure jubilation for the English women, and the country itself, the defeat marked the first time the Germans lost a European Championship final.

Little League World Series: Hawaii

For the fourth time since 2005, Hawaii has produced a Little League World Series champion. The boys from Honolulu didn't just win this year's tournament; they downright dominated. The Hawaiians, guided by veteran little league manager Gerald Oda, went 5-0 during the United States bracket, then rolled to a 13-3  victory over Curaçao in the international championship contest on Aug. 28 . For the tournament, Hawaii outscored its six opponents 60-5 and won four games by the so-called "mercy rule," which results in a shortened contest.

WNBA: Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces were the best team during the 2022 WNBA regular season, with a 26-10 mark, and the recipient of the Commissioner's Cup. Things stayed that way when the final horn sounded in Game 4 of the league finals on Sept. 18. The Aces beat Connecticut on the road that night to capture the franchise's first WNBA title. Paced by star and league MVP   A'ja Wilson, Finals MVP Chelsea Gray, and floor leader Kelsey Plum, Las Vegas helped league legend Becky Hammon become the first to win a title in her initial season as coach.

Major League Baseball: Los Angeles Dodgers

To Dodgers fans, the 2022 season was certainly bittersweet. For some, downright disappointing. Yes, Los Angeles not only failed to win the World Series but didn't even win a postseason series after losing in four games to San Diego in the divisional round. That said, the Dodgers' franchise-record 111-win regular season is worth celebrating when considering its place in baseball history. First, the Dodgers' win total was the most of any major-league team since Seattle's 116 from 2001 (the Mariners did not win it all that year, too). Second, the fact it's a record for a franchise that began in 1884 in Brooklyn is quite impressive. While Dodgers' fans were left frustrated, general appreciators of baseball can see why that regular-season performance is worth lauding.

Major League Baseball: Philadelphia Phillies

Mired in a 10-year playoff drought, the Phillies sat 22-29 when they fired manager Joe Girardi on June 3 . However, with bench coach Rob Thomson guiding the team, Philadelphia won its first eight games under the interim manager and went 65-46 the rest of the way. That resulted in an 87-75 mark, good enough to earn the NL's third and final wild-card spot. But the postseason was really where the fun began. The Phillies used a six-run ninth inning to erase a 2-0 hole at St. Louis in Game 1 of the wild-card round, scored 24 runs in a four-game divisional series win over Atlanta, and got that memorable two-run, go-ahead homer from Bryce Harper in the bottom of the eighth in their 4-3, NLCS-clinching victory over San Diego in Game 5 . Sure, Philadelphia blew a 2-1 World Series lead to Houston, but the 2022 ride proved sincerely rewarding.

Major League Baseball: Houston Astros

There are plenty of baseball fans who can't stomach the Houston Astros. However, they don't appear to be going away anytime soon. The 2022 campaign proved to be another dominant run for the Astros, who recorded an AL-best 106 wins and 807 runs and produced a 39-year-old Cy Young Award winner in Justin Verlander . Then swept Seattle and the New York Yankees in the AL postseason before going down 2-1 to Philadelphia in the World Series. Houston, though, allowed three runs in winning three straight games for the franchise's second title in six years. And, first World Series crown as a manager for beloved 73-year-old Dusty Baker.

MLS: Los Angeles FC

With a 21-9-4 regular-season mark, LAFC captured its second Supporters' Shield. However, Los Angeles had to work to win the franchise's first MLS Cup. In one of the most entertaining and exciting finals, on Nov. 5, in league history, LAFC and the Philadelphia Union , which enjoyed a stellar 19-win regular-season campaign, played to a 3-3 tie after regulation and extra-time, which included Gareth Bale's equalizer in the 120th minute for LAFC -- four minutes after the Union went up 3-2. The match went to penalty kicks, where LAFC backup goalkeeper   John McCarthy shined, and the club prevailed 3-0.

Men's College Soccer: University of Chicago

The NCAA Division III University of Chicago men's soccer program was looking for something -- or perhaps someone -- to get it over the hump and finally win a national championship after three previous trips to the national semifinals. It looks like first-year coach Julianne Sitch was the answer. Under the guidance of Sitch, the Maroons went 21-0-1 this season and beat Williams College 2-0 on Dec. 3 to claim that elusive title. Thus, making the 39-year-old Sitch, who played at nearby DePaul and in the NWSL, the first woman coach of a men's soccer national champion.

FIFA World Cup: Morocco

The feel-good moment of the 2022 World Cup -- for sure. Making back-to-back World Cup appearances, the Moroccans made history by becoming the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the event. It got there by upsetting Belgium and Canada and drawing Croatia, to surprisingly win Group F. The upsets continued by beating mighty Spain in the knockout round and winning 1-0 over Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the quarterfinals. While the fun ended with a 2-0 loss to France in the semis and followed with a 2-1 defeat versus Croatia in the rematch for third place, Morocco's fourth-place finish was truly something special.

FIFA World Cup: Argentina

In what is already being considered the greatest final in the history of the World Cup, Argentina outlasted reigning champion France, 4-2 on penalties after the perennial world soccer powers finished game action 3-3. It was Argentina's third World Cup triumph and its first since 1986. Most notably, it was the first World Cup title for superstar Lionel Messi (two goals), who was playing in a record 26th World Cup match, which proved to be a showcase between him and fellow international star Kylian Mbappe , who made it a 2-2 contest with goals minutes apart (80th and 81st) and equalized again with his 118th-minute penalty kick. Yet, it was the Argentinians left standing after showing tremendous perseverance from losing its opener against Saudi Arabia and topping the Netherlands on penalties in the quarterfinals.

College Football: Michigan Wolverines

Michigan enters its New Year's Eve College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against TCU with a 13-0 record during the 2022 calendar year. That run includes an impressive second straight win over Ohio State, 45-23 in Columbus, nonetheless. And a second consecutive Big Ten championship. While it remains to be seen if the Wolverines really do have the chops of a national champion, 2022 will be a special season in the annals of Michigan football.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles

We'll see how things play out in early 2023, but through 15 weeks of the NFL season, the Eagles are the NFL's best team. And, with just one loss, really, there's not much of an argument. Their only loss to date came against Washington on Nov. 14, and they have six wins by at least 12 points. Not to mention, versatile quarterback Jalen Hurts (3,472 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, five interceptions, 747 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns) is the frontrunner for NFL MVP. That said, Hurts is dealing with a shoulder issue , and since winning Super Bowl LII to conclude the 2017 season, Philadelphia has totaled 54 points while going 1-3 in the postseason.

2024 Travelers Championship live stream, TV schedule, channel, where to watch, tee times, radio, golf coverage

A busy three-week stretch in professional golf comes to an end this week in connecticut.

travelers-championship-signage-g.jpg

The 2024 Travelers Championship appears to be heading to an exciting finish. Taking to TPC River Highlands once again, Sunday's final round has moved into a playoff as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim battle for the trophy and a massive prize money payout .

Failing to card a single under-par round in a tournament for the first time in his professional career, Scheffler looks to get back on the wagon and capture his sixth victory of the season. A win at TPC River Highlands would be his first at a course which saw Xander Schauffele reign supreme in 2022.

The world No. 2 continues to display his consistency on a weekly basis and has now notched four straight top 10s dating back to the Wells Fargo Championship. With plenty of form in tow, Schaffuele seeks his second win of the season and second trophy at the Travelers Championship.

ATP Tour cancels Challenger Series in Moscow

The ATP Tour on Thursday canceled its ATP Challenger Series tournament in Moscow scheduled to start next week, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Wednesday night. "Due to concerns over player safety and uncertainty related to international travel following the recent escalation of events between Russia and Ukraine, next week’s ATP Challenger tournament in Moscow will not take place as scheduled," the tour said in a statement. "The security of players will remain our top priority in assessing the scheduling of subsequent ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour events in the region. We continue to monitor the situation."

The Challenger series exists one level below the full ATP Tour. The tour is scheduled to return to Russia in October for the Kremlin Cup 250-level tournament, though there has been no word yet from the ATP on whether that event has been impacted by the conflict in neighboring Ukraine. President Biden said on Thursday, "Every asset they have in America will be frozen, including VTB, the second-largest bank in Russia." VTB, which sponsors the tournament in October, is owned by the Russian state.

Tour de France 2024 start list: EF Education-EasyPost, Arkéa-Samsic and Soudal Quick-Step release teams

With just days until the 2024 Tour de France , the squad announcements are beginning to flood in.

EF Education-EasyPost will lineup with Neilson Powless, Richard Carapaz and Ben Healy in Florence on Saturday, with the team aiming for "stages at every opportunity".

The trio will be joined by Alberto Bettiol, Marijn van den Berg, Rui Costa, Sean Quinn and Stefan Bissegger.

Remco Evenepoel was confirmed to be riding his debut Tour on Tuesday, where he will be backed by a strong Soudal Quick-Step team including Mikel Landa and Jan Hirt.

Arkéa-B&B Hotels will aim for stage wins in a team led by former French champion Arnaud Démare.

Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen will lead Alpecin-Deceuninck at the Tour, a fact which has been known for a long time, but it was confirmed on Monday.

The duo, who have finished first and second at Paris-Roubaix for the last two editions, will once again team up on the roads of Italy and France.

They will be joined by Søren Kragh Andersen and Gianni Vermeersch, among others.

Groupama-FDJ, in their first Tour since Thibaut Pinot retired , will once again be led by David Gaudu. The mercurial Frenchman will be joined by Valentin Madouas, Stefan Küng and Lenny Martinez.

Oscar Onley is set to make his debut at the French Grand Tour, in a dsm-firmenich PostNL squad hunting for stage wins.

The young Brit will be joined by the experienced Romain Bardet, Warren Barguil and John Degenkolb, while Fabio Jakobsen will also be there looking for results in the sprint stages.

Also on the team are Nils Eekhoff, Frank van den Broek, and Bram Welten.

Ineos Grenadiers' general classification bid will be led by Carlos Rodríguez, stage winner and fifth overall last year, but the British team also has star power and experience through Tom Pidcock and Geraint Thomas.

The trio will be helped by Egan Bernal, Jonathan Castroviejo, Laurens De Plus, Michał Kwiatkowski, and Ben Turner.

Also announced on Monday were the lineups for Movistar, Astana Qazaqstan and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale.

For Astana Qazaqstan, it is all about Mark Cavendish , who is targeting one more stage win to make history. He will be assisted by Michael Mørkøv, Alexey Lutsenko, Yevgeniy Federov, Cees Bol, Harold Tejada, Davide Ballerini, and Michele Gazzoli.

Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, meanwhile, go with a split strategy between GC and stage wins. Felix Gall is their man for the mountains, after his stage win last year, and Sam Bennett will be there for the sprints.

It is a multi-layered team, though, with Bruno Armirail, Paul Lapeira, Dorian Godon, Nans Peters, Oliver Naesen, and Nicolas Prodhomme all presenting different options.

Lidl-Trek, without Tao Geoghegan Hart , will aim for stage win glory through Mads Pedersen, a winner at the two previous editions, and Giulio Ciccone, the King of the Mountains at last year's race.

The pair will be joined by Julien Bernard, Tim Declercq, Ryan Gibbons, Toms Skujiņš, Jasper Stuyven, and Carlos Verona.

Lotto Dstny will be led by newly-crowned Belgian champion Arnaud De Lie at the Tour, which will not only be his first time at the race, but any Grand Tour. Having beaten last year's green jersey winner, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) at the nationals, he will hope he can do it again.

Together with Maxim Van Gils, Victor Campenaerts, Brent Van Moer, Jarrad Drizners, Harm Vanhoucke, Sébastien Grignard and Cedric Beullens, the goal is stage wins.

Meanwhile, Movistar will be led by Enric Mas, as the Spaniard mounts another GC challenge; his highest finish was fourth overall in 2021.

He will be joined by Oier Lazkano, Davide Formolo, Nelson Oliveira, Alex Aranburu, Fernando Gaviria, Gregor Mühlberger and Javier Romo.

Bahrain-Victorious will take 2023 stage winners Pello Bilbao and Matej Mohorič , along with the former British champion Fred Wright . The latter will be hoping his luck finally holds if he makes it into a breakaway.

The trio will be joined by Wout Poels, Phil Bauhaus, Santiago Buitrago, Jack Haig and Nikias Arndt, in a team strong in stage-winning potential, with a GC bid also a possibility.

UAE Team Emirates' lineup was all but confirmed already , but it was published last week.

Assisting Tadej Pogačar in his bid for history - a Giro d'Italia and Tour double - will be Juan Ayuso, Pavel Sivakov, Marc Soler, Nils Politt, Adam Yates, João Almeida and Tim Wellens.

In Ayuso, Yates and Almeida, UAE have three hyper-domestiques who could be team leaders at a Grand Tour themselves. Yates, in particular, will be key, with the Briton winning the recent Tour de Suisse, and also finishing third at the Tour de France last year.

Israel-Premier Tech also released their eight-man team sheet, which includes four debutants, two of whom are Brits: Jake Stewart, Stevie Williams, Pascal Ackermann and Derek Gee. Williams and Gee, in particular, have shown their top form at times this year.

The team has experience, in Guillaume Boivin, Jakob Fuglsang, Hugo Houle and Krists Neilands. Notably, there is no Chris Froome .

Visma-Lease a Bike will be led by Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert . The pair were judged to have sufficiently recovered to be there at the French Grand Tour when it gets underway.

The pair will be joined by Matteo Jorgenson,  Sepp Kuss , Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benoot, Wilco Kelderman, and Jan Tratnik.

Both Vingegaard and Van Aert have had injury-interrupted seasons, with the former in serious doubt for the Tour, with the defending champion rushing to recover from injuries sustained in the  horror crash at Itzulia Basque  Country in April. The Dane suffered  multiple broken ribs , a collapsed lung, and a broken collarbone in the incident.

However, his team confirmed that he has recovered enough to "fight for a good result" in the Tour.

Jayco AIUIa confirmed that Simon Yates, Michael Matthews and Dylan Groenewegen would lead the charge for the team as they hunt for stage wins and a high general classification finish for Yates.

Luke Durbridge, Chris Harper, Chris Juul-Jensen, Luka Mezgec and Elmar Reinders complete the Jayco lineup.

Uno-X Mobility were the first team to release their lineup.

The Norwegian team will be led by Magnus Cort and Alexander Kristoff, two riders who have tasted success at the French Grand Tour in the past.

The pair will be joined by six more Scandinavians - all Norwegians, incidentally - Jonas Abrahamsen, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Rasmus Fossum Tiller, Søren Wærenskjold, Johannes Kulset and Odd Christian Eiking.

The 2024 race begins on Saturday 29 June in Florence, Italy, and finishes in Nice, France, just over three weeks later on 20 July. Read our guide to the Tour's route here .

Eight men are allowed in each squad, with a mix of climbers, sprinters, general classification hopefuls and domestiques. All 18 WorldTour teams will be present, alongside ProTeams Israel-Premier Tech, Lotto Dstny, Uno-X, and TotalEnergies.

Below are the confirmed squads for the race. We will update this page with more riders as teams are announced.

Tour de France 2024 preview: Full schedule, teams and how to watch live

Jonas Vingegaard bids for a third consecutive victory in the Tour de France

The Tour de France 2024 is almost upon us with the world’s most prestigious cycling race getting underway on Saturday 29 June.

All eyes are on the duel between Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark. The pair have won the last four titles between them with each aiming to win a third Tour de France.

After his emphatic victory in the Giro d'Italia, Pogačar goes into the event as favourite to add to his two wins from 2020 and 2021. It could be an incredible few weeks for the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist with the Tour de France ended just days before the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .

Meanwhile, Vingegaard has made a late comeback from injury to be fit for the Tour as he seeks to become the sixth rider - and the first Scandinavian - to win three consecutive yellow jerseys.

This year’s race is unique for a number of reasons. It will be the first edition to begin in Italy , marking 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian winner of the Tour de France.

The 'Grand Départ' is in Florence with the field traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France during Stage 4. This will also be the first Tour to finish outside of Paris - due to its proximity to the Olympic Games - with the final stage an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice which will decide overall victory.

Here is everything you need to know about this year’s Tour de France.

  • How to qualify for road cycling at Paris 2024. The Olympics qualification system explained
  • Giro d'Italia 2024: Pogacar claims the title in Rome - daily stage and general classification results

Riders to watch at the Tour de France 2024

As well as the big two - Pogačar and Vingegaard - other challengers for the yellow jersey include Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič .

Evenepoel has played down his chances of general classification success on his Tour debut, but his pedigree suggests he will be a threat. The Belgian has some impressive results to his name including winning the 2022 road race world title, and GC at the 2022 Vuelta a España in 2022. He also boasts two Liège-Bastogne-Liège victories.

Roglič, the 2020 runner-up behind compatriot Pogačar, will take some confidence from his overall victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Jasper Philipsen is the favourite to retain the sprinters' green jersey after winning Milan-San Remo and finishing second at Paris-Roubaix. Denmark's Mads Pedersen , road race world champion five years ago, is among his main challengers while Mark Cavendish needs just one stage win to break his tie with Eddy Merckx (both on 34) for the most stage victrories in race history.

Old cyclocross rivals Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert will also be in the mix for stage wins. The latter is back as one of Vingegaard's chief lieutenants in the Visma Lease a Bike team after sustaining multiple fractures in a crash at March's Dwars door Vlaanderen.

The 2024 Tour features seven mountain stages, including four summit finishes, and will suit the climbers. Pogačar (2020, 2021) and Vingegaard (2022) are past winners of the King of the Mountains' polka-dot jersey and are likely contenders once more.

Tour de France 2024 route and important stages

Also among the 21 stages of the 2024 Tour de France are two individual time trials and gravel sectors covering a total distance of 3,492km.

Starting from Florence, the 2024 Tour will complete three full stages in Italy traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France from Pinerolo.

With no Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux on this year's route, the Queen stage is the penultimate stage - a testing 132km cycle from Nice to the summit of the Col de la Couillole .

In recent years, the final individual time trial has been held on the penultimate day with the finale a procession on the Champs-Elysées on the Sunday. But, due to preparations for Paris 2024, this year's race will conclude with a 33.7km time trial from Monaco to Nice.

That means the yellow jersey could potentially be decided on the final day. The last time the Tour ended with a time trial was in 1989 when Greg Lemond overturned a 50-second deficit to Laurent Fignon to take victory by just eight seconds, still the smallest winning margin in race history.

Day-by-day route of the 2024 Tour de France

  • Saturday 29 June: Stage 1 - Florence - Rimini (206 km)
  • Sunday 30 June: Stage 2 - Cesenatico - Bologne (199.2 km)
  • Monday 1 July: Stage 3 - Plaisance - Turin (230.8 km)
  • Tuesday 2 July: Stage 4 - Pinerolo - Valloire (139.6 km)

From Humble Beginnings: Nitish Reddy's Journey to Indian T20I Team

Nitish Reddy, at the age of 21, has been called up to India's T20I side for the Zimbabwe tour, marking a pivotal moment in his career. This milestone reflects the sacrifices his father made, leaving his job to support his son's cricket career, facing financial hardships and societal criticism.

Reddy's father, Mutyalu, quit his job to ensure his son's cricket training was uninterrupted, even after losing his earnings in a failed business venture. Despite the criticism and financial struggles, their perseverance paid off as Nitish continued to excel in cricket, culminating in his selection for the national team.

The young cricketer's hard work, including practicing with side-arm specialists, and the support from SRH teammates and coaches, have been integral to his progress. Now, with national recognition, Nitish aims to earn respect for his father by wearing the Indian jersey and winning matches for his country.
