Word is that entrance is somewhat competitive (I don't know how much) and that they carefully review applicants, looking beyond straight scores to find students how show aptitude for independence and self-motivation. In addition to taking students from the area, approx. 130 permit in for regular honors level classes, unlimited enrollment for IHP (Individualized Honors Program or highly gifted; currently 68 students). For IHP, students are HG identified or HG performing, meaning that they look at the whole student. Just because test scores qualify doesn't guarantee entrance. They are looking for high level of thinking skills, motivation, independence, and those better ready for the program. Homework hours is same as load for honors and regular students. (Which is great, I think, because MORE WORK doesn't mean HIGHER QUALITY educational experience.)

I went to their 10/26 event where you could visit up to 3 SLC talks. Each SLC has a set of specialty, math, english, etc. teachers that teach to that SLC's content. Noteworthy: Innovative project-based, cross-curriculum assignments; staff & students love their "amazing" librarian. I went to these 3 SLC sessions: 1) IHP: they accepted 76 out of 280 applicants last year. 2) Technology Academy is filled with newer Macs. Left early because teacher was pointedly snippy. Hey, it's the truth, but probably not indicative of the whole program and staff. 3) Culinary Arts Academy: Very nice and passionate teachers! Program was new last year so this is only their second year. When they study history, they also cook historically! 4) Humanities Academy: Excellent place for students who love performance (theater, music), cultural arts, and creative expression! Again, highly passionate staff who love their students and what they do. Modeled on high school Humanities programs for middle schoolers. Very active parent group. For every SLC, there seems to be at least 1-2 honors classes, which means that if your student is gifted, he or she can be placed in the honors math, english, culinary, etc. classes. Do check on the details. All in all, this is too far for me because it's in the valley north of Ventura Blvd but also dependent upon Laurel Canyon traffic. Has feel of college in that you pick a "major" (SLC) and are encouraged to be self-motivated. Currently 1,662 students are enrolled in grades 6-8, incl. 33% or 547 gifted students. Application & Teacher Recommendation Deadline: FEBRUARY, 24, 2012 Acceptance Notification (by email): MARCH 23, 2012

Judges who do not accept their assigned ballot will be charged a $25 no-show fee for the first offense.  The second offense will be $50.  Each subsequent no-show from the judge will warrant a $50 charge.  Judges can avoid this fee by coming to the judge table/standby room for their ballot assignment and notifying tournament staff; sometimes e-mails delay delivery for any number of reasons that are outside the control of the tournament staff.  By notifying the tournament staff, judges can be messaged their ballot directly so that they aren’t marked as having missed the round.

All fees should be paid through the  ForensicsTournament.net  website.  Click the TOURNAMENT FEES tab on the left side of the tournament home page.

Judges who submit incomplete eBallots (with little to no substantive feedback) may be charged a judge no-show fee for failing to complete their judge assignment which includes both ranking the speakers along with giving sufficient comments.  Unsatisfactory ballots will be determined by the tabulation staff.

Delay of tournament fees may be assessed from $20-$100 based on the severity of the delay.

The tournament reserves the right to deny schools who do not supply at least half of their required judges.  We will do our best to ensure that no schools are denied because of this reason.

Judging Requirements:

All judges must submit their ballots electronically.  Thus, each judge should bring a laptop or tablet to complete the ballot.

Please remember that judge training is the responsibility of the school entering that judge.  Teams whose judges who turn in blank or insufficient ballots are subject to fines.  Ballot insufficiency shall be determined by the tournament director and/ombudsman.

Rules : All rules can be found in the SCJFL by-laws at SCJFL.org
