How Mentone Grammar plans to build an ‘even better’ school for students
As Mentone Grammars heads towards its centenary year in 2023, the school is in the strongest position of its history. Enrolment interest is unprecedented with extensive waitlists across many year levels and student outcomes across a wide range of programs are unparalleled. Principal, Mal Cater, said his focus for the future of the school is not simply to build a bigger school, but to build an ‘even better’ school.

A welcome from the principal.
If ever there was an imperative to exercise one’s rights and responsibilities in a proudly independent all girls’ school it is now. Leading and inspiring the next generation of women to take their place in a world that paradoxically seems to simultaneously empower and disarm them, celebrate and shame them is imminently achievable however, when we focus upon each girl’s life-long need for traditional knowledge acquisition; her future industry’s need for a range of responsive, transferable skills and society’s need for the purposeful development of a set of innately human capabilities so that she is better prepared to navigate the personal and professional complexities that await her.
At Mentone Girls’ Grammar, it is our focus of ensuring every girl feels she is known, seen and heard. It is this very sense of belonging that offers our students meaning and purpose to make independent discoveries about who they are and wish to become after their time with us.
Early Learning Centre
Our ELC curriculum includes a unique blend of inquiry and play-based learning, based on the philosophies of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). We immerse our young learners in experiences which enable them to explore, question, collaborate, think critically, problem solve, communicate and discover new knowledge, all within a fun and supportive environment near Melbourne.
Junior School
Our ib primary years program.
We provide a highly developed program of intentional teaching based on the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) which supports a unique blend of inquiry and play-based learning with Junior School students developing complex intellectual, emotional and social skills. They are exposed to a diverse program of inquiry and challenged in many areas from music and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), to financial and digital literacy, cultural understanding, leadership and social enterprise. They are encouraged to try new things, take-risks and be bold, tapping into their interests and passions.
Senior School
Curriculum, philosophy, and campus life.
As an intimate school with an enriched history, we are fiercely inclusive where all teachers know every girl by name, we are unafraid of difference and actively prepared to take risks in order to achieve growth. Life on campus is designed to ignite a strong sense of innovation and imagination, allowing the girls to seek meaningful pathways that will eventually lead them to consolidating their own futures. We aim to empower our girls through rigorous academic curriculum and exceptional pastoral care to become ethical global citizens, and on their journey to self-discovery, develop confidence, compassion and articulation that will place them is good stead for when they embark on their next chapter.

Paul Watson
Design & Digital Technology Technician
M Teach (Secondary), BPA
During his formative years, Paul’s parents made a bold decision that would forever change him. They packed up their life in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne and drove three hours north to begin the adventure of a lifetime – setting up their own wildlife park!
“We had crocodiles, ostriches, the lot…” Paul casually confirms, as though these are perfectly regular childhood pets. “We all really loved animals, so it just made sense.” His parents were living a mantra that resonates with Paul to this day, “Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Far from being a disgruntled teen, Paul was grateful for the opportunity to move to the country. “It prepares you for life. You become very self-sufficient and learn how to fix all sorts of things.” At school, Paul had a deep interest in Computer Science, Art & Design. Coupled with the manual skills he was acquiring by helping his parents on their property, he became very practised at problem-solving and thinking creatively. This led him to pursue a career merging machines and creative processes. His technical roles spanned screen printing, sign writing and machine operation before he found a niche in managing print rooms.
Paul first arrived at Mentone Grammar in 2013 as the Fuji Xerox Print Room Manager. “In my previous role, I didn’t interact with many people, and all of a sudden, I am surrounded by lots of smiling faces every day. It was wonderful. It made the time go very fast.”
Paul quickly became renowned among students and staff for his willingness to go above and beyond to help anyone with their projects. After a decade of working at the School, a colleague discovered Paul had a portfolio of creative projects of his own and urged him to submit a piece to the Centenary Art Exhibition. Paul produced a beautifully crafted wooden chess board which demonstrated his sophisticated level of skill. “The Business Manager at the time, Nicole, tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘I had no idea you could do this kind of thing’ and she encouraged me to apply for the role of the Design & Digital Technology Technician.”
These days Paul proudly declares that he is in his ‘dream job’. Still working at the intersection of machines and human creativity, he describes a new layer to his role which is the most rewarding – the students. “I love being able to share something new with them and see that they’re also excited by the possibilities.”
Paul’s greatest achievement? “Becoming a father. Nothing is more rewarding than this.” Paul beams as he speaks about his 8-year-old daughter and he hopes to continue to share his love of manual arts with her as she grows older.
