Ça dégénère complètement pendant le tournage de l’émission La Tour

Le populaire lutteur Marko Estrada était de passage à l’émission La Tour sur les ondes de TVA. Ça n’a pas pris de temps avant que tout éclate en bataille. On peut voir Marko s’en prendre dès le début à Kevin Raphaël pour ensuite se tourner vers Alexandre Barrette. Celui-ci lui a quand même donné un méchant coup de chaise dans le dos au lutteur. C’est finalement Gildor Roy qui a réglé le tout en expulsant Marko dans le sofa.

On peut dire que c’est un moment pas mal intense dans le condo de l’émission La Tour!

Comedian and former daytime talk host Ellen DeGeneres announced her full tour schedule for Ellen’s Last Stand… Up , what will be her farewell tour across North America.

Previously, DeGeneres announced she would release a second and final Netflix special before the end of this year. The comedian’s 2018 Netflix special, Relatable , was the first of a  two-special deal with Netflix.

DeGeneres already performed Ellen’s Last Stand… Up in Los Angeles, where she joked about the toxic-workplace controversy and the end of her show and said she was “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.”

“The hate went on for a long time, and I would try to avoid looking at the news,” DeGeneres said,  according to  People . “The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”

When DeGeneres spoke to  The Hollywood Reporter  about her talk show ending in 2022, she hinted at the possibility of returning to the stage.

“I also love doing stand-up, so I can always write another special and go out and [perform], which is Portia’s preference,” DeGeneres said , referencing her wife, Portia de Rossi. “She really loved when we went out on what she calls ‘a tour.’ She doesn’t understand, we only went to seven cities.”

Définitivement, l'équipe de l'émission La Tour n'a pas encore terminé de nous surprendre ! Kevin Raphaël et Marko Estrada étaient de passage à l'émission dans l'épisode le plus intense de la saison. Nous avons assisté à un véritable gala de lutte sur le plateau et même Gildor ainsi qu'Alexandre étaient dans l'action !  Il y a quelques semaines, nous vous rapportions que Normand Brathwaite avait été victime d’un AVC avant de monter sur scène. C’est lui-même qui avait abordé le sujet lors de son passage à l’émission  La semaine des 4 Julie . Cependant, il y a eu une confusion dans ses propos et il a profité d'un récent passage à La Tour pour mettre les choses au clair. 

Mardi soir, c'était au tour de Kevin Raphaël et Marko Estrada de s'amener sur les planches de l'émission et disons qu'ils nous en ont mis plein la vue !  Dans une mise en scène hilarante, impliquant même Gildor Roy et Alexandre Barrette, le plateau de La Tour s'est soudainement transformé en véritable gala de lutte. Alexandre s'est même permis le traditionnel coup de la chaise dans le dos de Marko !

Ellen DeGeneres Announces Dates for Her 'Final' Stand-Up Tour Across North America

Tickets for the 27-show farewell tour will be available May 30 for an artist presale and May 31 in a general onsale

Ellen DeGeneres is embarking on one last hurrah in her stand-up career.

This summer, the 66-year-old comedian will take a lap around North America on a 27-show tour, titled Ellen’s Last Stand… Up . Per a release shared with PEOPLE, the dates will be the “last opportunity” to witness DeGeneres in her “final curtain call.”

Produced by Live Nation, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up will be DeGeneres’ final comeback to comedy. The tour will see the former talk show host “reintroduce her trademark wit and laughter-inducing anecdotes” to a live crowd.

"Here it is! These are the cities and dates for my final stand-up tour," DeGeneres wrote on Insatgram . "Pre-sale starts tomorrow May 30th at 10am local time with code CHICKEN. Get your tickets at ellenshop.com/tour."

Tickets will also be available to the general public on Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. local time.

Earlier this May, PEOPLE announced that DeGeneres' upcoming Netflix special — set to be taped Aug. 16 and 17 in Minneapolis — will be her “last.”

“To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it,” DeGeneres said in a statement. “Yes, Portia [de Rossi] really is that pretty in real life."

DeGeneres implies that the stand-up set will broach even the most controversial topics, like the controversy surrounding The Ellen DeGeneres Show 's alleged toxic workplace environment. The claims, which first emerged in a BuzzFeed News report , included being penalized for taking medical leave, instances of racial microaggressions and fear of punishment for raising complaints.

DeGeneres long-running series concluded in 2022 after 19 seasons. Before that, she confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the toxic workplace controversy was not a factor in her decision to conclude the series. 

In her latest routine, which she performed at the Largo in Los Angeles on April 24 , DeGeneres joked about being “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.” She also admitted that although she “hated the way the show ended,” she was happy to be back onstage with her marriage to de Rossi, 51, stronger than ever.

“I think we need more laughter and less drama,” the Emmy winner added.

With a comedy career dating back to the ‘70s, the Seriously…I’m Kidding author has racked up numerous accolades over the years, including 12 Daytime Emmy awards for outstanding entertainment talk show, a Primetime Emmy award for her self-titled sitcom, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom .

Her most recent Netflix special, Relatable , was released in 2018 following a 15-year hiatus from stand-up comedy. In February 2024, she made another return to her roots to perform a surprise set at Beth Stelling’s “Beth & Pals” show alongside Adam Sandler , Sarah Silverman , Aidy Bryant , Ted Lasso ’s Brett Goldstein , Alana Johnston and Nthenya from Kenya.

"Explosion" de fourmis invasives à la frontière franco-allemande : "Il faut agir avant que ça ne dégénère"

Le maire de Kehl, ville allemande frontalière de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), a alerté à propos d'une espèce de fourmis invasives qui s'est multiplié dans plusieurs quartiers. Selon un entomologiste interrogé par France 3 Alsace, il appartient aux pouvoirs publics de s'emparer du problème en amont d'une éventuelle propagation.

Cette fois, c'est le maire de Kehl en personne qui a pris la parole pour tirer la sonnette d'alarme. Une espèce invasive de fourmis est en train de se développer dans des quartiers résidentiels de Kehl, ville allemande frontalière de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Elles se seraient ainsi multipliées " de manière explosive " ces derniers mois, soit seulement quelques mois après les premiers signalements rapportés par la presse locale.

" De notre point de vue, il est urgent d'établir des réseaux puissants, rassemblant des chercheurs, des économistes et des politiques ", a poursuivi Wolfram Britz, dans des propos rapportés par le quotidien régional Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace. Une véritable politique de lutte, donc, pour neutraliser ces petits insectes de 2 à 4 millimètres. Il faut dire que les nuisances subies par les habitants concernés sont nombreuses, avec des coupures de courant répétées après l'intrusion des bêtes dans les systèmes d'alimentation, et la perturbation du réseau Internet. C'est aussi une fourmi réputée pour être nocive pour certains arbres fruitiers, ravagés en Corse depuis plusieurs années.

L'invasion peut-elle toucher Strasbourg ? C'est en réalité déjà le cas depuis 2023. Nous vous le racontions d'ailleurs , cette espèce de fourmi a été détectée dans les jardins familiaux de Cronenbourg, à proximité du marché-gare. " Il n'y a rien à faire, j’ai dû jeter toutes mes betteraves " déplorait par exemple Henri, locataire d'un jardin familial touché par Tapinoma magnum - le nom scientifique de l'espèce. Si la multiplication des fourmis côté allemand ne devrait avoir "aucun impact" sur la situation strasbourgeoise, elle doit cependant contribuer à la prise de conscience sur la nécessité à s'y prendre le plus tôt possible pour éviter une propagation.

La circulation de l'homme ou des marchandises à l'origine du problème

Il suffirait en effet qu'un jardinier de Cronenbourg amène avec lui par inadvertance, sur un vêtement ou dans un pot de fleurs, quelques fourmis de l'espèce Tapinoma Magnum pour que celle-ci se reproduise dans un autre quartier de Strasbourg ou de l'autre côté de la frontière. La logique est évidemment aussi valable pour les habitants de Kehl, qui peuvent sans le vouloir contribuer à l'expansion géographique de l'insecte. " Même si elle se déplace plus que d'autres fourmis, elle ne peut le faire que sur des petites distances, quelques centaines de mètres par exemple. Si l'espèce a atterri en Alsace ou au Nord de Karlsruhe, en Allemagne, alors qu'elle est originaire du Sud de l'Italie ou de la Libye, c'est par l'intervention de l'homme. "

La circulation des hommes ou des marchandises (les fourmis du marché gare sont peut-être arrivées via une palette de fruits par exemple) étant continue, le risque que les foyers se multiplient de part et d'autre de la frontière sont réels. " C'est pour cela qu'il faudrait profiter du fait qu'un premier foyer a bien été identifié pour agir très vite, avec des professionnels et des chercheurs, estime Christophe Brua. C'est à la Ville de Strasbourg de prendre les devants. On voit par exemple qu'à Kehl c'est le maire lui-même qui a pris la parole à ce sujet, sûrement parce qu'il y a de la pression de la part des habitants touchés. Mais est-ce qu'il faut attendre que les fourmis atteignent les zones habitées pour vraiment agir ? "

Nous avons tenté de joindre la Ville de Strasbourg pour savoir ce qui avait été mis en place depuis septembre, mais nous n'avons pas eu de retour à l'heure de la publication de l'article. " On va essentiellement s’atteler à circonscrire la présence de cette fourmi là où elle est déjà , expliquait l'adjoint au maire en charge des jardins familiaux, Hervé Polesi, en septembre dernier. On sait déjà que l'on n’aura pas les moyens de l’éradiquer, par contre, il faut faire en sorte qu’elle ne quitte pas ce territoire et qu’elle ne se propage pas ailleurs dans Strasbourg ". 

La lutte commence par le signalement 

La manière dont les pouvoirs publics réagissent à l'apparition de la fourmi invasive se révèle souvent décisive dans sa progression par la suite, selon Christophe Brua. " Si la mairie communique, prévient les habitants par exemple dans son bulletin municipal, fait de la pédagogie pour que les citoyens sachent repérer et identifier la fourmi, alors les signalements seront plus efficaces. Il y a peut-être déjà d'autres foyers à Strasbourg sans qu'on le sache. Si les habitants ne sont pas conscients du problème et ne font pas de signalement quand ils voient une fourmi noire, qui court partout, qui a une odeur de beurre rance quand on l'écrase - toutes les caractéristiques uniques de Tapinoma Magnum - alors la lutte est moins efficace. "

D'autant qu'une fois que la fourmi atteint les propriétés privées, les bâtiments ou les maisons, l'éradication devient un véritable défi. " C'est une espèce qui doit absolument être traitée sur l'intégralité de la zone infectée, sinon c'est contre-productif et ça aboutit à une multiplication , explique Christophe Brua. Or, s'il s'agit de propriétaires privés, il faut obtenir l'ensemble des autorisations, non seulement pour le traitement mais aussi pour le suivi. Ça peut être très compliqué. " Le maire de Kehl, Wolfram Britz, ne dirait sûrement pas le contraire.

Long forgotten after his death in 1652, he is now embraced by the French as an icon; an exhibition touring this country shows why

It is one of the gnawing anomalies of art scholarship that Georges de La Tour was "lost" for nearly three centuries and yet with us all the time. His luminous paintings were on view in public and private spaces, wearing labels identifying them as the work of Murillo, or Velázquez or Caravaggio.

La Tour, who was born in 1593 and worked for most, if not all,of his life in Lorraine, was rediscovered at the beginning of this century. His paintings, of mendicant hurdy-gurdy players, rascally cardsharps and hypnotic holy figures, are now on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. "Georges de La Tour and His World," which includes 27 of the artist's 40 or so known works, will be in place until January 5, 1997; it will then travel to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will run from February 2 to May 11. La Tour created more than one painting of several of his subjects, and these "autograph versions" can be seen side by side, inviting comparison and providing context.

In the 1630s La Tour turned his attention to nocturnes — pictures of figures magically caught in the light and shadow of a flickering candle flame. The keynote work in the show, The Newborn Child , offers a young mother gazing raptly at her swaddled infant, illuminated by a candle held by an older woman. Is it a nativity scene? Scholars disagree.

La Tour died in 1652, probably of the plague. His legacy was one of enduring beauty.

Conjugation

This verb is conjugated like céder . It is a regular -er verb, except that its last stem vowel alternates between /e/ (written 'é') and /ɛ/ (written 'è'), with the latter being used before mute 'e'. One special case is the future stem, used in the future and the conditional. Before 1990, the future stem of such verbs was written dégénérer- , reflecting the historic pronunciation /e/ . In 1990, the French Academy recommended that it be written dégénèrer- , reflecting the now common pronunciation /ɛ/ , thereby making this distinction consistent throughout the conjugation (and also matching in this regard the conjugations of verbs like lever and jeter ). Paris : au procès du meurtre à coups de foret, l’étrange déposition de la femme de la victime

Au deuxième jour du procès d’un Chinois pour le meurtre particulièrement brutal d’un compatriote, en septembre 2020, rue de l’Ourcq (XIXe), l’épouse de la victime n’a répondu à aucune question de la cour d’assises. Cette femme, bien seule sur le banc des parties civiles, finira par faire un malaise après le visionnage des vidéos de l’agonie de son époux, diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux chinois après les faits.

La présidente de la cour d’assises soupire et s’affaisse dans son siège. Elle tente, depuis près d’une heure, de faire parler, non pas l’accusé, mais la partie civile, au deuxième jour du procès d’un Parisien de 43 ans accusé d’avoir battu à mort un homme de 34 ans, en septembre 2020, dans un appartement de la rue de l’Ourcq, à Paris. Sans succès. Lingyan L., l’épouse de la victime, répond systématiquement à côté. Fait mine de ne pas comprendre. N’hésite pas à se contredire d’une réponse à l’autre, par l’intermédiaire de son interprète en mandarin. « Moi, j’arrête ! C’est peut-être moi qui vous crispe, ou qui vous bloque. Si mes collègues veulent tenter, c’est le moment », s’exaspère la magistrate.

Lingyan, comme l’ensemble des protagonistes du dossier, est Chinoise sans papiers, et elle ne parle pas un mot de français. C’est en tout cas ce qu’elle affirme. Car à deux reprises, la présidente remarque qu’elle commence à répondre avant même que son interprète n’ait commencé à traduire sa question. Barrage culturel ou volonté de dissimuler certains éléments gênants ? La question est sur toutes les lèvres.

Une plainte pour violences conjugales et sévices sur animal

Car Lingyan est un témoin clé. Elle est la dernière à avoir vu Xueli D., l’accusé, quinze minutes avant son passage à l’acte présumé. Elle est vue, sur les images de vidéosurveillance de l’immeuble, quittant les lieux dans une petite robe bleu roi. Elle avait remis deux jours plus tôt 300 euros à ce réparateur de téléphones clandestin, qui travaille au noir pour la diaspora, pour qu’il remette son smartphone en état.

Selon l’accusé, son époux soupçonnait une relation adultère, et il était venu chez lui pour en découdre, casqué et armé d’un marteau. La bagarre aurait dégénéré dans une sauvagerie inouïe. « Votre mari avait deux raisons d’en vouloir à M. D. », résume la présidente. « Soit c’est à cause de cette histoire un peu nébuleuse de réparation de téléphone, soit – et là, nous sommes dans la rumeur – c’est parce qu’il y aurait eu une relation amoureuse entre vous et D. Pourquoi votre mari se déplace ce jour-là ? » interroge une nouvelle fois la magistrate. En vain.

Lingyan est bien seule, sur le banc des parties civiles. Personne, en Chine, ne s’est manifesté après le décès de Zie, abandonné par son père et orphelin de mère. « Il y a une troisième possibilité, avancée par la défense. Votre mari se serait présenté chez D. pour le racketter. » « C’est impossible », répond Lingyan. Elle explique que son mari, qui exporte au noir des grands crus de vin rouge vers la Chine, gagnait bien mieux sa vie que l’accusé. « Nous avions le projet d’ouvrir un commerce. Pourquoi prendre de tels risques ? Il a peut-être fait des bêtises, dans sa jeunesse. Mais il n’en faisait plus depuis que nous étions ensemble. »

Le casier de la victime, contrairement à celui de l’accusé, n’est pas vierge. Zie a été condamné deux fois à trois ans d’emprisonnement, pour des faits d’extorsion avec violences et de vol aggravé. Mais les peines ont fini par être confondues. En 2019, Lingyan avait déposé plainte contre son époux pour des faits de violences conjugales et de sévices sur animal. La procédure a été classée en 2023, la plaignante n’ayant pas donné suite.

Son mari, soutient-elle aujourd’hui, était « calme » et un « bon père ». Xueli, en revanche, était « très nerveux » quand elle a quitté l’appartement, juste avant les faits. C’est lui qui l’avait congédiée, après avoir reçu un appel de son mari. « Il a dit : S’il ose venir chez moi, je vais le battre à mort », lâche Lingyan. « C’est nouveau, ça. Il n’y a aucune trace de ces propos dans la procédure », bondit la présidente. « Pourquoi vous n’avez pas dit cela plus tôt ? » Lingyan répond qu’elle n’a été auditionnée qu’une seule fois.

Me Vincent Fillola, avocat de la défense avec Me Isabelle Calvo Pardo, tique : Lingyan, rappelle-t-il, avait déclaré qu’elle était rentrée faire une sieste avec son fils, juste après avoir quitté l’appartement de Xueli. La présidente rebondit : « À supposer que M. D. ait menacé de mort votre mari, cela voudrait peut-être dire que vous n’avez pas pris ces paroles aux sérieux ! » « Je n’ai pas fait attention à ce qu’il a dit », est contrainte de reconnaître la jeune femme. Me Fillola revient à la charge : « J’ai vérifié. Vous n’avez pas été entendue une fois, mais trois fois ! »

La présidente « insiste très lourdement ». « Je me demande si vous vous rendez compte de la portée de vos propos. Ce n’est pas en enfonçant une personne plus de quatre ans après les faits qu’on la rend plus coupable, et qu’on obtient plus d’indemnisations ! » Après le visionnage à huis clos des vidéos de l’agonie de son mari, diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux chinois par l’accusé, Lingyan fera un malaise. Évacuée de la salle, elle sera prise en charge, toujours aussi seule, par les pompiers.

LaTour Demonstration State Forest

LaTour Demonstration State Forest is in Shasta County, approximately 1 hours’ drive East from Redding. It became state property in 1930 when the state exchanged 10,957 acres of scattered state school lands with the USDA Forest Service for the 9,033-acre tract. The property became LaTour Demonstration State Forest in January 1946 when the California State Lands Commission deeded it to the then California Division of Forestry for $100,000.

In 1951 active forest management commenced on the previously unmanaged property, with LaTour’s first timber sale. Through responsible forest management, regular harvesting of merchantable timber and other forest products has continued since. Approximately 200 million board feet have been harvested from LaTour. Current average harvest is between 2-4 million board feet per year. Most of LaTour has been harvested three times.

LaTour Butte is 6,742 feet in elevation and named in honor of James C. LaTour, a blacksmith immigrant who ran a stagecoach station and trading post at Deer Flat. The forest itself was named after the Butte. The LaTour Butte Lookout was built in 1935 and is still staffed periodically during the fire season. The present-day Forest Headquarters was built in 1954. McMullen Mountain is 6,580 feet in elevation and named after James McMullen, an old-time trapper and cattleman. He ranged his cattle in present day Cutter Meadows before the Cutter family acquired the land.

The forest supports ten different coniferous tree species of commercial value. They include sugar pine, ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, western white pine, lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, white fir, red fir, incense-cedar, and mountain hemlock. Pacific yew can also be found in the lower drainages but is much rarer than the others. There is a small hardwood component in the stands as well with the presence of California black oak, canyon live oak, big leaf maple, and red alder.

Typically, the forest is accessible by vehicle from late June until November. The winter and spring months are often a time of high wind, deep snow, and extreme cold, making the area inaccessible to vehicular traffic except by snowmobile. During this time, the forest gates may be locked to protect the road surface, but the forest remains open for all other winter recreation.

LaTour is part of the Cascade Mountain Range, which makes it a popular location for snowmobiling, hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Hunting and fishing may be enjoyed during the appropriate seasons and in accordance with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. There are four small primitive campgrounds on LaTour. Campgrounds have a two-week limit per site and are open as long as forest access allows. If you choose to ride horseback, you are required to supply sufficient feed for riding stock. The stock shall not be turned loose to graze, and when secured must be within reach of water and feed. Pets are welcome but must be under the control of the owner at all times.

LSDF is committed to working with educational partners such as Shasta College’s Natural Resource program and their Heavy Equipment Logging Operations program.  Through these programs LDSF continues to serve as an in-wood classroom to facilitate the education of future land managers and support work force development for resource sector jobs

Hunting may be enjoyed during the appropriate seasons and in accordance with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The area of approximately 320 acres (129.504 ha), being a portion of the Latour State Forest immediately surrounding the Latour Forest Headquarters and Forest Fire Station. Said lands being located in Shasta County and being described as follows: lying north and east of McMullen Mountain being the SE 1/4 of Sec. 1 and the NE 1/4 of Sec. 12, T32-N, R2-E, MDB&M.

This area will probably never attract hordes of visitors.  There is no unusual scenic beauty, nor natural wonders, nor large body of water for recreational use.  It may attract the hunter, fisherman or rare individual who wishes solitude.”

There are 4 campground on LDSF.  They are primitive by design, to support the enjoyment of solitude on the mountain.

LDSF has no trail system at this time and has no development plans for a trail system.  During the Summer and Fall months, the roads remain open to public travel except when there is danger due to logging equipment. Many of the roads are suitable for nature walks, sightseeing, or mountain biking. Due to erosion, the use of dirt bikes, mountain bikes, or ATV’s is limited to the forest roads, and all such vehicles in use must have the proper permitting.

TOURING LA TOUR'S WORK

YOUNG PAINTERS tend to put more art than heart into their early works, using tricks of technique to cover callowness. Georges de La Tour, on the other hand, was born deep but seems to have grown steadily shallower as he aged.

La Tour (1593-1652), who lived and worked in relative obscurity in Lorraine and was "discovered" more than two centuries after his death, is celebrated in a landmark exhibition at the National Gallery of Art. The show, mounted in the gallery's inimitable style, amounts to only the second major retrospective of La Tour's work and benefits from a generation of scholarship since the first was held in Paris in 1972.

The 43 paintings in the show, which was jointly organized by the gallery and the Kimbell Art Museum of Fort Worth, include some 30 known or believed to be by La Tour. There are also several works executed "after his manner," perhaps painted or finished by his son, and 10 by his contemporaries, most notably the Italian genius Caravaggio (1571?-1610), whose revolutionary technique of casting bright subjects against deep, dramatic shadows astonished and beguiled 17th-century European painters. La Tour was perhaps Caravaggio's most fervent disciple, carrying what was called tenebrism to brilliant extremes: so brilliant as to be breathtaking but so extreme as to border on banal.

The exhibition, which is arranged in as nearly chronological order as scholars have been able to sort out, reverses the usual experience of a retrospective of a great artist. One expects to see a cluster of tentative or brash early works, followed by development of insight, vision and individual technique. But La Tour's earliest works, studies and scenes of peasants and street people, seem the most original, mature and honest. They portray real people, enduring poverty and the social chaos of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), all given immortality by the hand of a master.

"Old Man," "Old Woman" and "Old Peasant Couple Eating," all painted about 1620, when La Tour was still in his twenties, seem as fresh as yesterday. "The Musicians' Brawl" and the "Hurdy-Gurdy Player," both dated 1625-27, are contrived burlesques rather than slices of life, but La Tour clearly is engaged with his subjects, empathetic if not exactly sympathetic.

Then, suddenly, La Tour's light starts to dim and he adopts Caravaggio's point-source lighting and dark backgrounds, and begins to distance himself from his subjects. In "The Flea Catcher" (c. 1630-34), a young woman sits close to a candle in her boudoir, catching the fleas (or lice) crawling on her body. The subject is an ordinary one for the time (vermin tormented everybody in those days), and much is made of the symbolism of the work, in which the flame may represent Jesus lighting the way for a sinner to search out her faults. But the picture is notable in this exhibition as being the last of the paintings to show a believable person.

La Tour was not just influenced by Caravaggio, he was captured. From the earliest painting in the show, "The Payment of Taxes" (c. 1618), La Tour had demonstrated an innate mastery of light, but under the impact of Caravaggio his paintings steadily become less substance and more surface until they become obvious, almost cynical, exercises in effects and techniques. The effects are wonderful and the techniques are terrific; La Tour handles color, light, tone and perspective very like the Old Masters, but he handles people like mannequins.

He's painting not only after the fashion of Caravaggio but after the fashion of the day. The dated "The Cheat With the Ace of Clubs" (c. 1630-34) hangs beside Caravaggio's timeless "The Cardsharps" (c. 1594), and suffers from the comparison. Caravaggio's con men are fluid and funny, and his sucker is sweet, so simple and tender that one wants to run and warn his mother what a pickle her boy is in. La Tour's card players are porcelain dolls set out to illustrate a moral.

So are his saints, even though the male ones are mostly wrinkled and ugly old guys, so earthy they shocked the churchmen of the time. The biggest letdown in the show is likely to be for those who grew fond of La Tour's "Magdalene" series during its recent exhibition at the National Gallery. Seen in this larger context, the Magdalenes lose much of the magic that had attended the smaller show; they too take on the air of easel exercises.

The air of cynicism that hovers over the show is consistent with what little is known of La Tour's life. He was a penny-squeezing landlord of Luneville, a tax-dodger, a bad neighbor who had a terrible temper and a habit of coursing his horses and hunting dogs through standing crops. In the Thirty Years War he chose the winning side and so was spared the ravishment of person and property that was the lot of most of Lorraine's inhabitants. But he could not escape the plague, carried by vermin that were no respecters of persons; beginning with a nephew who was newly come to his household, the disease killed La Tour's family one by one, himself last.

Some of La Tour's late works are suggestive: "The Repentant Magdalene With a Document" (date disputed) is simplified almost to abstraction; "Saint Anne With the Christ Child" (c. 1645-50) faintly prefigures Modigliani; "Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness," painted during the same period, has an almost cubist simplification of lines and planes. One cannot help but wonder in what direction La Tour's talent might have taken him if he'd never seen a Caravaggio.

INFO LE FIGARO - «Plusieurs dizaines de milliers de manifestants» sont attendues ce week-end entre Castres et Toulouse pour empêcher la construction de l’autoroute A69. Sept individus ont été interpellés depuis le début de la semaine.

Un arsenal de «fous furieux» . Alors que sont attendus, ce week-end, des milliers de militants écologistes sur le site de construction de l’ autoroute A69 , entre Castres et Toulouse , de premiers contrôles ont d’ores et déjà eu lieu dans le secteur. Au total, 552 personnes ont été contrôlées en amont de la manifestation, a appris Le Figaro . Sept individus ont été interpellés depuis le début de la semaine. Nombre de ces manifestants étaient porteurs d’armes destinées à attaquer les forces de l’ordre, qui seront déployées en masse.

Ainsi, 26 «objets» ont été très récemment saisis par les autorités, a-t-on appris de source proche du dossier. Parmi eux, des couteaux à grande lame, des boules de pétanque, des couteaux pliants - simples à dissimuler -, des cartouches pour fusils de chasse de calibre 12 - pouvant être utilisés pour le gros gibier... Mais aussi, et surtout, des planches à clous, des serpettes, des scies, des lance-pierres, des haches et... des bonbonnes de gaz.

Les militants déjà présents sur place ont également érigé des lieux de vie et de stockage rudimentaires, pour faire place nette sur les lieux. C’est ici que les armements sont fabriqués, avec l’aide de bocaux, de bidons et de bouteilles aux liquides mystérieux. «Des ateliers de confection de cocktails Molotov» y ont été découverts, nous indique-t-on. Des casques parsèment également le sol de ces abris de fortune, parfois recouverts de paille.

Mardi, le ministre de l'Intérieur, Gérald Darmanin , a annoncé l'interdiction de cette mobilisation, ce que Les Soulèvements de la Terre ont qualifié d' «irresponsable» . Au cours d'un point presse en ligne mercredi, ils ont dit s’attendre à «plusieurs dizaines de milliers» de participants, mais n'ont pas donné officiellement de détails sur les formes précises de leur «manif'action» qui prendra pour base, à partir de vendredi soir et jusqu'à dimanche, un lieu de rassemblement sur un terrain privé, à proximité du chantier.

Pourtant, la manifestation risque d’être violente, selon une note du renseignement territorial consultée par Le Figaro . Selon ce document, les Soulèvements de la Terre (SLT)  auraient prévu de renouer avec des actions musclées. Les SLT exhortent ainsi leurs militants à venir sur place avec tout un arsenal laissant peu de doute sur les actions à mener: cocktails molotov et matériel de bricolage, notamment des tenailles.

À l'Assemblée nationale, Gérald Darmanin avait estimé mardi que la mobilisation s'annonçait «extrêmement violente» , avec «600 black blocks (...) qui veulent en découdre, s'en prendre aux biens, attaquer des personnes» . «Toute atteinte à cette liberté de manifester fera l'objet de recours, plaintes et dénonciations (...) et pourrait entraîner des réactions populaires imprévisibles» , ont de leur côté prévenu les organisateurs. «Si ça dégénère, ça ne sera pas de notre fait évidemment, notre objectif n'est pas d'aller à une confrontation violente» , a déclaré le préfet du Tarn Michel Vilbois, interrogé sur les violents incidents survenus lors de la manifestation écologiste, également interdite, contre les méga-bassines à Sainte-Soline (Deux-Sèvres) en mars 2023. Ce week-end, 1000 gendarmes et policiers devraient être mobilisés.

One Day Los Angeles Self-Driving Tour

What should you do in LA if you only have 1 day to spend? This one-day driving tour will give you a glimpse of the top LA sights from Hollywood to Venice Beach. It assumes you have your own car or a rental car for the day. If it's summer, start in Hollywood to end up in Venice for sunset on the beach. If it's winter and the sun is setting at 4 pm, do the tour in reverse and start at the beach, ending in Hollywood after dark.

If you don't have a car available, you can also book a Hop On-Hop Off City Sightseeing Tour to visit most of the same locations without the driving.

If you don't get out of the car, the drive alone takes about 1 and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic, but you can get out and take a look at many different stops and still do this route in a day.

So let's get started exploring Hollywood!

Walking Around Hollywood & Highland

We wouldn't necessarily recommend staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, but it's worth taking a look inside at this historic Hollywood landmark, and it makes a good starting reference.

Start your morning with breakfast at Mel's Drive-In , one block east on Highland just south of Hollywood Blvd , or grab a bagel at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf across from the hotel, then cross the street to compare your hand and footprints to your favorite stars in the forecourt at TCL (Grauman's) Chinese Theatre . Not much in the Hollywood & Highland shopping center next door will be open before 10 or 11 a.m., but walk across the front of the complex past the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held to the staircase leading up to the Babylon Courtyard . Don't forget to look down at the Hollywood Walk of Fame as you're walking to see if your favorite entertainers' stars are on this block.

You can take the escalator up to the Babylon Courtyard, but then you won't get a chance to admire how the architects managed to frame a view of the Hollywood Sign as you ascend the center of the staircase. The Courtyard itself looks like a Hollywood set with giant elephant sculptures perched high above the three-level ring of shops. Make your way up to the viewing bridges at the back of the courtyard via stairways or escalators on either side for your photo opportunity with the Hollywood Sign and Hollywood Hills as a backdrop. You can also see the Hollywood Methodist Church with its red ribbon painted on the tower. In the 1943 movie War of the Worlds,​ terrified citizens took refuge in this church from attacking aliens.

Driving Through Hollywood

Head back to your car and drive east on Hollywood Blvd, past some of Hollywood's other landmarks. The El Capitan Theatre and Disney Entertainment Center opposite Hollywood & Highland was restored by the Disney Company to its previous glory. The Jimmy Kimmel Live! show is taped in the Entertainment Center, while Disney films are screened at next door El Capitan with pre-show visits by costumed movie characters. The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Disney Studio Store shares the building.

On the next block, next to the dinosaur-topped Ripley's Believe It or Not , just down Highland, you can see the pink and green art deco façade of the original Max Factor factory, which now houses the Hollywood Museum . Continuing east, on your right you will pass the American Cinematheque at the historic Egyptian Theatre and the Art Deco Hollywood icon that was originally Kress Department store. It spent a long time as Frederick’s of Hollywood before being converted to a short-lived restaurant and nightclub. Hollywood's oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank Grill will be on your left.

At Hollywood and Vine, you can look for metered street parking to stop and take a photo of the circular tower of the Capitol Records building, the Hollywood and Vine signs and sky trackers and another view of the Hollywood Sign or you can look left at them as you turn right down Vine Street. Either way, when you're ready, head south (away from the hills) on Vine Street, then turn right on Sunset Boulevard. The half-golf-ball Cinerama Dome is on your left. Amoeba Music, at Ivar, is THE place to shop for hard-to-find music including a vast collection of recordings on vinyl and tape.

Following are two different routes to take you west to the ocean, depending on what you would like to see.

• Route A takes you west by Museum Row on the Miracle Mile and the La Brea Tar Pits , if you're interested in pre-historic saber tooth cats and mammoths.
• Route B is west via the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood .

Route A via the La Brea Tar Pits and the Museum Mile

Continue down Sunset to La Brea. Turn left on La Brea until you get to Wilshire (about 2 miles). Turn right on Wilshire. You're entering the Museum Row on the Miracle Mile, which includes the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the striking Petersen Automotive Museum - whose shiny steal ribbons over red surface look like a car rounding the corner from across the street - and the many buildings of the LA County Museum of Art .

As you pass Curson, look for metered parking on the right in front of Hancock Park near the Page Museum and the La Brea Tar Pits. If there is no parking available on Wilshire, turn right on Fairfax and right on 6th Street to park on the other side of the park or park in one of the pay lots. There are entrance gates from 6th Street and from Wilshire, but the biggest tar pits are near the Wilshire entrance.

Take a quick stroll through the park to see these active tar pits where more pre-historic fossils have been discovered than anyplace else on earth. Active excavations are underway and there are daily tours of the current excavation pit at 1 p.m. Fossils from these pits have found their way into museums all over the world, but the largest collection is here at the Page Museum.​

Optional Detour:  If you're ready for lunch head up Fairfax to 3rd Street to the LA Farmer's Market to grab a bite at one of the many food vendors in this permanent market building. If you finish lunch quickly, you might have time to stroll next door for some shopping or celebrity spotting at The Grove .

Continue west on Wilshire to Rodeo Drive .

Route B via West Hollywood

Instead of turning left at La Brea, continue on Sunset through West Hollywood on the famed Sunset Strip. You'll pass the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory where many famous comics got their start. You'll also pass some of LA's most revered live rock n' roll venues, the Viper Room , the Whiskey A-Go-Go , and the Roxy. West Hollywood usually has an interesting collection of quirky billboards soaring above the sidewalk cafes, bars and shops that line the streets.

Entering Beverly Hills , Sunset becomes a windy road with green hedges and trees blocking your view of most of the mansions tucked behind them. You'll pass the famed Beverly Hills Hotel on the right. You can turn left off of Sunset for a detour down famed Rodeo Drive which is at a 6-way intersection crossing Sunset at the same place as Cañon Drive.

Continue down Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive on the 1 Day LA Tour

From Sunset, turn left and proceed through several blocks of well-groomed mansions before you arrive at the short stretch of high-end designer boutiques recognized around the world. Rodeo Drive dead ends into the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wilshire Blvd. You can either go around the block and go back up to Sunset or turn right on Wilshire and head west toward the Beach.

If you're already on Wilshire, continue West to Rodeo Drive, which only goes to the right. Metered parking is available on Rodeo and surrounding streets, and some parking structures have an hour or 2 of free parking if you want to get out and walk around. 

The designer shops only occupy three blocks, then Rodeo becomes a wide boulevard passing through a Beverly Hills neighborhood of multi-million-dollar mansions all the way back up to Sunset Blvd. Turn Left on Sunset heading west.

Sunset is a winding green route to the beach. Wilshire is an urban landscape of retail and commercial buildings with a green stretch through the L.A. Country Club.

If you want to take the Wilshire route, turn right at the Sunset 6-way intersection down Cañon Drive, then veer right at the next block on Beverly Drive, just to give you a different view back down to Wilshire, where you’ll turn right and pass Rodeo Drive again on your way to  the beach .

If you're in any kind of a hurry, the Wilshire route is usually slower, but they'll both be pretty leisurely.

To Santa Monica via Sunset Boulevard

If you take Sunset, you'll drive by UCLA on the left. You can detour through campus if you're interested. It's a beautiful campus. Beyond UCLA, after you pass Will Rogers State Historic Park veer left on Chautauqua as Sunset veers right. (If you miss Chautauqua, Sunset goes all the way to the beach, but it will add several additional curvy miles to the route.) Chautauqua will take you down to the ocean, where you will turn left on Pacific Coast Highway (known locally as PCH). PCH is a limited-access highway as it comes into Santa Monica . Take a slight left from PCH onto California Incline, which is basically a left-exiting off-ramp from PCH to Ocean Blvd, where you will turn right for a few blocks before turning left on Broadway and right into the parking structure adjacent to the Santa Monica Place Mall. Alternately, if you miss California Incline, you can   stay in the right lane and follow the signs to take the middle exit on Moomat Ahiko Way (as PCH turns left and Appian Way goes straight), then turn left on Ocean and right on Broadway to the parking structure. If you miss the curve and end up on Appian Way, take the next left up to Ocean.

Be sure to stay right and NOT follow the Pacific Coast Highway or you'll end up on the freeway. If that does happen, take the first exit, Lincoln, turn left on Lincoln back to Colorado Ave, then take a left back to the beach. The parking structure will be on your right after 4th street.

Parking structures 7 and 8 adjacent to the mall have free ​90-minute parking, $1 for the next hour and $1.50 per 30 minutes after that. The lower floors are 3 hours only.  A few other downtown lots have the same rates. There is also parking at the Civic Center, or there are multiple pay lots at the beach and short-term metered street parking.

To Santa Monica via Wilshire

Take Wilshire through Beverly Hills and Century City, into Santa Monica to 4th Street; turn left on 4th. Turn Right on Broadway and left into the Santa Monica Place parking structure.

Alternately, if you're running late and it's not rush hour, you can take Wilshire to the 405 Freeway South, exit to the 10 Freeway west, exit 4th Street at the end of the freeway. Follow the sign for 4th Street, then turn left off of 4th onto Broadway and into the parking structure.

Exploring Santa Monica

Parking is free in the Santa Monica Place parking structure for the first 90 minutes, as are other city parking structures in the vicinity. If you are in need of a restroom, there are public restrooms at the shopping center.

From Santa Monica Place or the parking structure, exit on foot toward Broadway and the Third Street Promenade.

If you want to visit the Pier, turn left and walk down Broadway to Ocean. The Pier is one more block to the left at Colorado. The Santa Monica Pier has a Carousel, a solar-powered Ferris Wheel, a small roller coaster and a couple other rides at Pacific Park , as well as the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, a Trapeze School, a fast food court and restaurants and some gift shops - and of course, a great view of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Beach . There are summer concerts held on Thursdays at the foot of the pier adjacent to the on-pier parking lot.

Third Street Promenade is lined with shops and restaurants and usually has an array of street performers, especially during summer and on weekends and evenings the rest of the year. For some budget designer snacks, head upstairs at the food court at 1315 Third Street Promenade and try a Wolfgang Puck Pizza. It's only budget compared to dining at Wolfgang Puck's other Santa Monica establishment, Chinois on Main.

Venice Beach

Retrieve your car from the parking structure at Santa Monica Place and make your way around the block to where Main Street starts on the other side of the Mall. Main Street will take you through an area of shops, galleries and restaurants as you cross over into Venice Beach . Proceed to the traffic circle at Windward and look for a reasonable place to park. There are a variety of parking lots in the neighborhood with prices ranging from $3 to $15 depending on the day and season. In the off-season, you may find street parking. If you're stopping for less than an hour, you may score a spot right there on Windward right by the beach. Don't forget to note your space and pay at the pay station mid-block.

From Windward, walk to the right, down the boardwalk between the vendor stalls and the street performers past the outdoor gym at “Muscle Beach.” Walk about 7 short blocks to watch the sunset over a casual dinner at the Sidewalk Café. If you're all walked out already, there's a parking lot off the alley behind the Sidewalk Café just off of Clubhouse Ct. For those on an even tighter budget, grab a slice of pizza or a sausage sandwich at one of the Venice Beach snack bars and find a spot on a bench or a nice stretch of sand to enjoy the view. Bring a sweater or jacket. The beach is cool in the evening, even in summer.

After dinner, you're close to the airport if you've got a red-eye flight to catch, or you can deadhead back to Hollywood and grab a drink at one of the Roosevelt's 6 bars or restaurants.

If you're still standing, head out to one of LA's Top Dance Clubs or Comedy Clubs .
