Road Trip and Weather Conditions About Interstate I-95

If you're planning a road trip along the East Coast of the United States, chances are good that you'll be spending some time on Interstate I-95. This 1,908 mile long highway runs from Maine to Florida, and is the primary north-south corridor on the East Coast. Interstate I-95 is the primary north-south corridor of the East Coast of the United States. It skirts the coast of the Atlantic Ocean to cross 15 states and Washington, D.C. Virginia storm leaves motorists stranded on I-95

By Melissa Mahtani , Melissa Macaya, Mike Hayes and Meg Wagner , CNN

No people left stranded on I-95, Virginia Department of Transportation says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

There are no people still stranded on Interstate-95, according to a  tweet  by the Virginia Department of Transportation Fredericksburg.

“Less than 20 vehicles left to be removed from the interstate before plow trains will come through to remove snow and ice from the travel lanes,” the tweet said.

Numerous motorists had been stuck on the interstate after a storm swept through the area leaving people trapped in their vehicles overnight.

The remaining vehicles have been abandoned, Gov. Ralph Northam said in a briefing Tuesday.

See the agency's tweet:

No fatalities or injuries reported on I-95 as crews continue work to clear interstate

(Steve Helber/AP)

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) road crews and state police continue to clear approximately 60 abandoned vehicles on Interstate 95 after rain, snow and ice stranded drivers along a 40-mile stretch, according to state officials.

In a briefing Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said he is grateful that that there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries.

The governor said that the perfect storm created an “incredibly unusual event” that resulted in a major backup that’s going to take time to clean up.

“First we had rain, which meant that VDOT couldn't adequately pretreat the roads. Then we had slushy snow that fell a lot faster than our snowplows could move it, and then as the night fell, the temperatures dropped below freezing. All of those together created the perfect storm for what happened on I-95 last night," he said.

Multiple tractor trailers, blocking the highway led to miles of backups with people stuck in their cars for many hours, according to Northam.

“Road crews from VDOT and emergency responders have been working around the clock to tow disabled vehicles and get traffic moving again,” Northam said.

Northam said that the region was not prepared for the weather that swept through the region.

“We were prepared for the storm that was predicted — a few inches of snow, but instead, Mother Nature sent more than a foot of snow to the Fredericksburg area,” Northam said.

VDOT Commissioner Stephen Brich said in the briefing that from mile marker 104 to approximately mile marker 153 of I-95 experienced anywhere between eight to 11 inches of snow during a very short window of time.

“Compounding this issue was that we were experiencing, as the storm progressed from west to east, rapid decreases in temperatures that were experienced, including on our pavements.” he said.

“Crews worked day and night, all night last night on this section of roadway and have continued to do so today,” Brich said. He said they will continue to do so not only on I-95 but also on the secondary roads.

Northam said that the state has not called upon the National Guard for assistance because it takes time to deploy them and that their road crews, first responders and emergency management teams are well equipped to handle the situation.

CNN previously reported that VDOT anticipates I-95 to be cleared of vehicles sometime today ahead of tomorrow’s rush hour.

Sen. Tim Kaine arrives back at the Capitol after 27 hours on I-95

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer

(CNN)

Sen. Tim Kaine has finally arrived back at the Capitol after being stuck on I-95 since yesterday.

“You have to figure out the strategy, and it's like, turn on the heater full blast, heat the car up, turn it off, and then try to catch some sleep, in about 20 or 30 minutes it gets so cold in the car, then you have to do it again," he said.

He added, “You're like trying to keep fuel. You're trying to research what you can about what the roads will be like when the sun comes up. So it wasn't boring.”

Kaine said he found some camaraderie on the road as well, describing the constellations he saw while walking around with other people trapped on the highway.

“You’d get out to stretch your legs. It was a clear night. 'Oh, yeah, there's Cassiopeia. There's Orion's Belt. There's the Big Dipper.' You know, we were sharing a gallows experience," he said.

Sen. Tim Kaine was on the road for 27 hours in Virginia because of the snowstorm — but he's finally moving now

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine was stuck on Interstate 95 traffic for 27 hours, mired with many other motorists on the road after a snowstorm caused delays and closures.

"We have been just moving at a snail's pace, and there have been at least a couple of times where traffic on the interstate, black ice, when the snow was slushy, and remelted last night, it was very icy. Entire traffic was stopped for five or six hours at a time, and so, you know, we would get out and visit with folks in the cars nearby. I'm driving myself, but other cars are packed with kids or senior citizens, folks coming back from vacations. There was some nice camaraderie, even during a very miserable and extremely cold evening," Kaine said in a phone call to CNN.

He left Richmond, Virginia, at 1 p.m. ET yesterday and was on his way to the Capitol for a voting rights meeting.

Kaine said he's only eaten one orange since Sunday night, given to him by a Connecticut family who were on their way back from Florida.

To save gas, he said he was turning on the heat full blast for about 10 minutes, then turning the engine off and tried to sleep for 20-30 minutes at a time. He credits a good coat and filling up his gas tank in Fredericksburg beforehand for getting him to this point.

Kaine said he's been talking with fellow lawmakers, friends and family via phone.

"I was hoping to make it to the Capitol by a 4:30 meeting, but we'll see if I do," he said.

By the end of the interview, Kaine said he just got back on a reopened portion of I-95, the road is clear and he's driving at 60 mph.

"Now that I'm 90 minutes from the office, I'm planning on eating a lot and using the restroom as soon as I pull in," he said.

Trucker offers a stranded stranger a microwaved breakfast during standstill on I-95

From CNN's Alisha Ebrahimji

Trucker Jean-Carlo Gachet said he’s been stuck on Interstate 95 since 1 a.m. ET and wanted to do something for the car stranded next to him.

Gachet said he’s equipped with food and water in his truck and he was more than willing to lend a hand, so he took a microwaved breakfast to the car in front of him around 8 a.m. ET. Gachet said the man and his mother in the car were very thankful.

"He was shocked when he opened the door at first, and you know, I was saying, 'hey, I just made you a hot breakfast and a cup of fruit punch. I saw you were sitting out here the whole time, as long as me, I was here since 1 a.m.' So it was him and his mother, and both of them were really appreciative. It was a really nice moment," Gachet said.

He said he's never experienced a situation like this one.

“Easily the longest traffic jam I’ve been in,” he said. “Second to this traffic jam was a semi-truck accident with multiple vehicles involved, which resulted in an hour of standstill traffic.”

Gachet said he left Rhode Island around 5 p.m. ET yesterday and is en route to Georgia. He is currently in Dale City, Virginia.

As of 2:40 p.m. ET, he is still stuck.

Officials hope to have I-95 cleared today ahead of tomorrow's rush hour

From CNN’s Jennifer Henderson

The Virginia Department of Transportation anticipates Interstate 95 will be cleared of vehicles at some time today, before tomorrow’s rush hour, according to Marcie Parker, district engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation Fredericksburg District.

Parker is leading VDOT’s efforts to clear the interstate, she said during a telephone media briefing.

Around 4 a.m. ET Tuesday morning, it became clear to officials that the only way they would be able to remove stuck vehicles would be to shut down the interstate, Parker said. There was up to four inches of ice under some vehicles, she added.

“While we were able to clear many different accidents and trucks and move a little bit of traffic, we know that there were still an enormous amount of vehicles that were stuck for many, many hours, which we find completely unacceptable for those folks,” Parker said.

Parker said they did not consider closing I-95 prior to the storm. VDOT was prepared, but the snow was more than they anticipated and fell at a harder rate than expected, she said. When more than an inch an hour falls, it's difficult to move their trucks around fast enough, she said.

VDOT mobilized on Sunday to bring in and outfit equipment, with workers coming on duty at midnight working 12-hour shifts, Parker said.

Virginia agencies have moved a “nice amount of traffic” off I-95 Tuesday and say the process is going quicker than anticipated, she said.

Roads were not pre-treated because the weather started with rain and it would have just washed the treatment away, Parker added.

After the roads are cleared, Parker said they will look at what happened and make adjustments to future plans.

Corinne Geller, the public relations director for the Virginia State Police, said her agency started planning in anticipation of the winter storm by extending trooper shifts immediately.

VSP first got calls about a jackknifed tractor-trailer around 8:20 a.m. ET on Monday, which caused a chain reaction of vehicles backing up on I-95, Geller said.

There have been no reported crashes, just vehicles stuck or disabled, and no traffic deaths or injuries, Geller added.

Truckers were "heroes" to stranded drivers and gave out food, drinks and blankets during jam

Isaac Arcos, a driver who was stuck in Virginia for at least 13 hours after snow caused a massive backup and closures on Interstate 95, said truck drivers were heroes to those stranded on the road.

Arcos was only about an hour away from his destination when he had to stop. He went on Twitter to try to find information and started messaging others in the same situation.

"Truck drivers were reaching out to other drivers as well and saying 'hey, if you're hungry, if you're cold, if you're thirsty, reach out to a truck driver; we always have snacks, we always have extra blankets, we always have extra drinks," Arcos told CNN. "And honestly, truck drivers are the real heroes."

He also said he got stuck on the side of the road for about 10 minutes, but two people helped him by getting out of their vehicles and pushing his car.

Arcos said he had to keep turning off his car to conserve gas and it was very hard to stay warm in below-freezing temperatures.

He is now out of the traffic jam and was able to get gas.

Federal highway officials say they are in communication with Virginia’s transportation department to help with its response to Monday’s snowstorm that stranded countless drivers on Interstate 95 near Stafford.

In a tweet, the US Department of Transportation says the Federal Highway Administration is in communication with Virginia transit officials “and has asked about their unmet needs, estimated time for reopening, and what their plans are for assisting motorists.”

The Federal Highway Administration will "continue to monitor, ready to assist VADOT as they work to resolve this situation,” the tweet added.

Woman stuck for over 9 hours says stranded motorists are "hitting the point of no return"

Susan Phalen and her four dogs left her house in Fredericksburg, Virginia, at 8 p.m. last night. At 6:15 a.m. this morning, she was still stuck on Interstate 95 in Virginia due to a huge backup from a severe winter storm.

A man a few cars behind her started his trip at 5:30 a.m. yesterday morning, Phalen said, and is trying to get to Long Island. For Phalen, what was supposed to only be an hour drive, turned into a more than nine hour journey for her.

“This [is] one for the record books,” she said. “I could have walked there faster.”

Phalen joined CNN for an interview this morning and said that people stuck are "hitting the point of no return."

I-95 in Connecticut will be closed for days after fiery crash damages bridge, governor says

HARTFORD, Conn. — The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway and causing major traffic jams. While Lamont said there were no serious injuries in the 5:30 a.m. accident in Norwalk, the crash caused damage to the bridge above it.

“The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down and that demolition is going to start first thing tomorrow morning,” Lamont said at a briefing Thursday evening in Hartford.

He said the hope is to reopen the interstate by Monday morning.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said his city’s schools will be closed on Friday. It’s unclear whether they’ll reopen Monday. He urged local employers to consider allowing employees to work from home on Friday, if possible, or use the MetroNorth commuter rail. Additional trains are being added to the rail line, officials said.

While the bridge was less than 10 years old, “the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

The tanker had been carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 liters) when it crashed beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge, officials said. The overpass did not appear in danger of collapsing, said Scott Hill, chief engineer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

i 95 north travel conditions

Eucalitto said it’s unsafe to allow any traffic to pass underneath the bridge in either direction, so the entire bridge, which has beams that cross both spans of highway, has to be removed.

Large equipment was being brought to Connecticut Thursday evening to complete the demolition, which is expected to begin around 3 a.m. on Friday. Lamont said the work could take 24 hours or longer to complete. After that, the roadway may need to be repaved before it can reopen.

It will likely take about a year to replace the bridge, a major artery for the city of more than 91,000 people. Lamont said he is hoping to receive federal reimbursement to cover the cost.

“I’m glad everyone is OK,” Lisa Brinton, who lives south of I-95, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “My concern is the after effect. Norwalk is divided in half by 95 and I drive over Fairfield Avenue bridge everyday.”

The cause of the crash remains under police investigation and no charges have been filed.

About 160,000 vehicles travel that portion of I-95 in both directions daily, Eucalitto said.

Traffic was backed up for dozens of miles during the morning rush hour, and lengthy delays remained in the area into Thursday evening and were expected through the weekend. Slow-moving detours were set up, taking traffic off the highway and around the accident scene. The crash left other highways and secondary roads in gridlock. The major alternate route in the area, the Merritt Parkway, cannot be used by trucks because the underpasses on that highway are too low.

Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and trucking companies who use the section of I-95 were notified to find alternative routes and means of travel, he said. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg also was notified.

“I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can,” Lamont said during an earlier briefing in Hartford. “The traffic jams are horrendous.”

Crews offloaded about 4,000 gallons (about 15,142 liters) of gasoline that was unburnt and remained on the tanker. Utility crews were also working to replace downed wires.

Environmental crews worked to clean up gasoline and firefighting foam. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the runoff was contained to a retention pond and did not make it into the Norwalk River or the city’s harbor.

The accident was reminiscent of  last year’s  deadly accident in Philadelphia along I-95 when a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline lost control and caught fire, destroying a section of the highway.

The crash also came just over a year after a similar wreck on I-95 in Connecticut that forced the closure of the highway.

In April 2023, another fuel truck caught fire after colliding with a stopped car on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between New London and Groton. The fuel truck driver was killed. The crash shut down the southbound side of the bridge for hours, while the northbound side was closed briefly.  The driver of the car  was recently charged with negligent homicide.

I-95 closed in Norwalk, Connecticut after tanker fire. What to know about driving around the area.

By Tony Aiello , Lori Bordonaro , Mark Prussin

Updated on: May 5, 2024 / 12:47 PM EDT / CBS New York

Update 5/5/24: All lanes  reopened Sunday on I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut

NORWALK, Conn. --  I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut is closed in both directions and will not reopen for several days after a fuel truck crashed and burst into flames  under an overpass Thursday morning.

Officials called it a chain-reaction crash. Just before dawn, a car swerved in front of a truck pulling a flatbed trailer as a fuel tanker approached the Fairfield Avenue overpass  just past Exit 15 south .

"To avoid it, this tractor-trailer swerved to the right and he hit the other tractor-trailer, which ripped open the back of his gasoline tanker," said Stephen Shay, with the Norwalk Fire Department.

Work began early Friday morning to demolish the damaged overpass . Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said crews will use shears to lift it, which could take at least 24 hours.

Watch video from Chopper 2 over the demolition early Friday morning.

State of emergency in Connecticut

Lamont has declared a state of emergency as drivers struggle to navigate detours, meaning a standstill for traffic and a slowdown for business.

"I worry about supply chain issues ... I think it will definitely impact the local merchants," Lamont said.

Local roads were a chaotic mess as thousands of drivers traveling one of the busiest interstates in the U.S. are being diverted around the accident scene.

Northbound lanes are closed to all traffic at exit 14, and southbound lanes are closed at exit 15. Travelers are advised to use I-84 as an alternate route through the state.

Metro-North has extra crews on call in case additional trains are needed.

Norwalk Public Schools are closed Friday because of potential traffic backups. All practices are canceled through the weekend, but athletic games, drama performances and proms are still allowed to take place.

Connecticut officials are urging employers to let employees work from home if possible.

I-95 overpass must be demolished

chopper-230p-0502-hi-res-still-15-04-3225.jpg

Flames spread down the highway and roasted the overpass. The fire caused significant damage to the structure and the gas, phone and cable utility lines running underneath it.

"This bridge is less than 10 years old, but the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker. It ignited directly underneath the bridge structure. The seal did begin to overheat and warp," a Connecticut Department of Transportation official said at a news conference . "Unfortunately, it's not able to be safely reopened in either direction underneath that bridge."

"The bridge was damaged, the heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down," Lamont said.

Later, he said on X, "The overpass near Exit 15 on I-95 in Norwalk needs to be demolished and the road needs to be repaved. Expect this area of the highway to remain closed through at least Monday. Avoid driving in the area."

State emergency management director Bill Turner said, "Anyone that drives into that area, in that geographical footprint, will receive a wireless alert on their cell phone advising them to avoid the area."

The closed stretch of I-95 serves 160,000 vehicles per day, according to the governor's office.

"The traffic jams are horrendous"

aiello-12p-pkg-norwalk-wcbsa2tp-hi-res-still-00-00-1013.jpg

"Thank God no serious injuries, but it has resulted in the closing of I-95 North and South and that is incredible in terms of the traffic jams and what's happening there," said Lamont.

Hours after the fire was put out, the charred remnants of two trucks and a passenger vehicle sat on the shuttered highway between Exits 15 and 16.

Northbound lane closures  started at Exit 13 in Darien , according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

"I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can. The traffic jams are horrendous," said Lamont.

Drivers from Bridgeport to Port Chester, New York received text alerts to avoid I-95 and trucking companies were told to use I-87 and I-84 instead, Lamont said.

"For a lot of truckers, we are on the clock. So we can only work 14 hours and drive 11 hours. So this impact, it slows down the delivery time for our loads," said Avril Jenerette, a trucker.

Drivers should expect delays on the Merritt Parkway, which trucks are not allowed on, while crews work to clear 95.

"Our highways team is working closely with Connecticut's DOT on the tanker fire that has closed I-95 in Norwalk. Please heed local authorities on detours and avoid the area if possible. Thank you to the first responders who are dealing with the fire and keeping other drivers safe," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg posted on social media.

Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled

norwalk-truck-fire-aftermath-2.jpg

The truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel and 75% either burned or spilled onto the highway, officials said.

Hazmat crews responded to the spill and had concerns about material getting into the Norwalk River, but testing revealed no impact on air or water quality.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

NORWALK, Conn. -- A multi-vehicle crash involving a fuel truck, tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle on Thursday morning closed down lanes of I-95 in both directions and is causing significant traffic disruptions.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-95 in Norwalk around 5:30 a.m.

The tanker was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it was involved in the crash with a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.

So far no injuries have been reported and officials say there is no threat of a collapse.

"About 6,500 gallons of gasoline have either burned off or runoff, and our teams are conducting a cleanup operation along the Norwalk River. It's a complex situation involving local and state hazardous response teams," said State Emergency Management Director William Turner.

i 95 north travel conditions

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said he has spoken with Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and federal resources are standing by.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 are expected to stay closed for an extended period of time.

The Norwalk Asst Fire Chief said that the bridge will have be torn down. The roadway will not be able to reopen until demolition is complete.

"We anticipate this area of the highway to be closed for a significant period. Anyone traveling through this area should find alternate routes," Governor Ned Lamont said on X.

The result is a traffic nightmare with thousands of vehicles -- many of them tractor trailers -- being diverted onto local streets.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Gov. Ned Lamont then said Sunday that the highway would be fully reopen to traffic in both directions by 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Lamont.had said the Connecticut Department of Transportation estimates that northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Norwalk closed by a fiery crash would reopen to vehicles by 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 4.

Lamont and Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said Saturday that DOT crews and contractors “stayed at the site of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge throughout Friday night and continued working through the early hours of Saturday morning when additional equipment needed to remove the damaged bridge arrived.”

The crews completed the bridge demolition by 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The fiery crash on Thursday involving a tractor-trailer and a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel led to a massive fire left both sides of Interstate 95 in Norwalk shut down as crews assessed and repaired the damage the blaze caused to utilities and a bridge in the area.

The crews then began cleaning up “all the debris and materials from the bridge off the highway. They also began making necessary repairs to the highway to ensure that it is safe for vehicular traffic,” Lamont said in a statement Saturday night.

CT officials: I-95 shut down for extended period following fiery crash; bridge has to ‘come down’

“Crews are making great progress in Norwalk and I am encouraged that we’ll have one side of I-95 open later tonight,” Lamont said, in an emailed statement. “Completely removing that bridge in less than 36 hours is an impressive feat and is credit to the hard work and dedication of the contractors and Connecticut Department of Transportation crews, who are pushing to get the entire highway fully reopened in both directions by Monday morning.”

The statement noted that southbound lanes of I-95 will remain closed to vehicles through the day on Sunday, May 5, “because the pavement on this side of the highway was so damaged from the Thursday morning crash that those lanes need to be milled and repaved.”

Eucalitto said, “I continue to be thankful to the CTDOT crews and contractors who are working as hard as they can to get this highway reopened.”

(Norwalk Fire Department/Connecticut Governor's Office via AP)

“They made great progress today and I remain optimistic that we will meet our Monday morning deadline,” Eucalitto said. “I ask the public to remain patient with the ongoing traffic congestion and to continue using alternate routes and public transportation throughout the weekend.”

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling praised the response from the Norwalk Fire Department, Norwalk Police Department, and the state, including Lamont’s office, the DOT, the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and state police.

“The fact that there were no injuries from the accident and that crews are working incredibly quickly to remove the bridge so we can reopen I-95 in both directions as soon as possible is a testament to Governor Lamont’s leadership and the high level of collaboration between each agency and level of government,” Rilling said. “I also want to thank our Norwalk residents and business community for their patience, as I know these temporary closures have been a complete inconvenience to their lives.”

A live video feed of the work can be seen at https://share.earthcam.net/CTDOTNorwalkbridge.

The statement noted that drivers are asked to remain patient and follow all posted signs and that commercial vehicles are asked to continue using alternate routes through Fairfield County until further notice.

US-95: Thorn Creek Road to Moscow

Expanding the highway to four lanes on a new alignment will not only add capacity and reduce travel times but also significantly improve safety.

Construction

The 2023 construction season began in early February. Work will take place near Eid Road and will include building a rock embankment for the site of the two new bridges and excavation on the north side of Reisenauer Hill. Controlled blasting is expected to resume weekly and continue throughout the spring.

It is anticipated that drivers will be able to take the new route in fall of 2024.

Envision the new route

The new alignment will tie in at Reisenauer Hill, where the current four-lane section ends, and reconnect near the grain bins on the south end of Moscow.

Compared to the existing route, after construction US-95 will ascend at a gentler grade up Reisenauer Hill to the prairie below Paradise Ridge. The highway will cut through small hills below the ridge to maintain a consistent grade, cross over Eid Road via two bridges and descend into Moscow.

Generally, US-95 will be shifted to the east less than three-quarters of a mile, and ITD is in the process of relinquishing its jurisdiction of what will be old US-95 to North Latah Highway District.

With a flatter grade and fewer approaches, the new route will provide safer travel between Moscow and Lewiston.

Design details

About 6.5 miles of highway will be expanded to four lanes divided by a 34-foot median in the rural section. Shoulders will be widened, curves will be made easier to navigate and the grade will be less steep. New ditches will keep precipitation from gathering on the roadway, and a 30-foot clear zone will provide a safe area if a vehicle goes off the road.

County road intersections will have right and left turn lanes, and some current access points will be combined to limit the number of new intersections and driveways.

In the urban section just south of Moscow, a center turn lane, curbs, gutters and sidewalks will be added.

As part of Governor Brad Little’s Leading Idaho initiative, the 2021 Idaho Legislature dedicated $126 million of one-time funds from Idaho’s budget surplus to transportation projects statewide. The funds were split 60/40 between ITD and local jurisdictions. This project is partially paid for with ITD’s portion of the funds that will accelerate projects to replace bridges, restore pavements, and improve mobility in communities across Idaho.

Winter shutdown

Winter shutdown is in effect due to weather with operations to resume in 2023. Earthwork on more than 2.5 miles of the new alignment on the project was completed for the season. The overall project is about 30 percent complete.

Preliminary work underway

Crews mobilized into the middle segment and began survey.

Contract awarded

M.A. DeAtley Construction out of Clarkston, WA, was awarded the contract for $57.7 million.

ITD seeks bids

ITD now seeking bids through October 2021, bringing the project one step further to construction.

Wetlands permit approved

On March 9, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted ITD a wetlands mitigation permit. Now ITD will finish right-of-way acquisition so the project can be put out for construction bids, possibly for construction in late 2021.

As of February 2021, ITD has submitted a revised 404 permit application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Once the permit is issued, ITD will finish right-of-way acquisition, and the project can be put out for construction bids, possibly for construction in late 2021.As of Ma

Revising wetland report

ITD gathered information to update its wetland report in order to submit a revised 404 permit application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Following that application, ITD will finish right-of-way acquisition. After those two steps are completed, the project can be put out for bids, possibly for construction in 2021.

Expansion gets green light

The Ninth Circuit of Appeals ruled in favor of ITD in the latest appeal. Work will continue on final design plans and acquisition of right of way.

Construction resumed in early February. Work this year will take place near Eid Road and will include building a rock embankment for the site of the two new bridges and excavation on the north side of Reisenauer Hill. Controlled blasting is expected to resume weekly and continue throughout the spring . Read more.

I-95 in Connecticut closed, video shows bridge engulfed in flames following crash: Watch

A multi-vehicle collision on thursday caused a gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above i-95 in connecticut, near norwalk..

Authorities in Connecticut have begun demolition work on an Interstate 95 overpass that was damaged in a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles in the early morning hours of Thursday.

"Work to remove the damaged structure began at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3, and crews will continue working on this around the clock through the weekend," Governor Ned Lamont's office said in a statement Friday afternoon. "Once the bridge is removed, sections of I-95 will be milled and paved in both directions in the area."

The highway remains closed in both directions to all traffic, said the governor's office, and travelers have been strongly advised to avoid the area or use the I-84 as an alternate.

Commuters were also advised to use the MetroNorth Railroad, which will have additional rail services over the weekend , if they need to travel. Authorities have also requested drivers to be patient, follow all posted signage and visit CTroads.org for the latest updates before making any travel plans.

The governor's office hopes that the busy highway is reopened by the morning rush hour commute on Monday.

"Heroic local and state first responders got the crash cleared and the fire under control yesterday, and now the amazing team with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, as well as our contractor teams, are going to be working all weekend under immense pressure to get the highway reopened," the governor said in a statement.

Why is Interstate 95 in Connecticut closed?

Around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, a multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer, a fuel truck and another vehicle took place on I-95 in southwest Connecticut. The accident caused the gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above the interstate.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said no serious injuries or fatalities were reported from the crash.

Video footage from the incident shows the tanker engulfed in flames underneath a bridge surrounded by black clouds of smoke as firefighters attempt to douse the fire.

The governor declared state of emergency to help "expedite some of the resources needed for us to respond to this situation". Under this, the governor office and CDOT have requested the Federal Highway Administration Friday for "an expedited release of $3 million to assist with the initial response."

"The bridge was damaged. The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down," Lamont had said during a news conference Thursday evening.

Interstate 95 is now heavily damaged, creating traffic headache for travelers

Although the overpass was less than 10 years old, according to Connecticut DOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, it sustained "pretty severe" damage due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker truck when it burst into flames. Gas from the tanker caused the steel within the bridge to overheat and warp, Eucalitto added.

Eucalitto said that crews with CDOT and contractor staff will be working 24/7 over the weekend to "get I-95 reopened by Monday morning."

William Turner, state emergency management director, in a news conference Thursday had said that about 6,500 gallons of fuel was burned in the fire, and that state environmental agencies are investigating the foam and gas runoff that flowed into the nearby Norwalk River and to empty the remaining 2,000 gallons of gas in the tanker.

Travelers in the area were stuck in traffic for hours as the northbound and southbound lanes near the exit remained closed as of Thursday night.

Interstate 95 is used by more than 100,000 drivers in the state per day as of September, according to Connecticut DOT's traffic data . The highway connects New York City to Connecticut and Rhode Island.
