African Safari - Compare 10,449 Tours

Does an African safari feature on your bucket list? It should! Africa has so much to offer, from spectacular scenery, friendly people and cultural treasures to blissful beaches. But above all else, it is the wildlife and safari lifestyle that will draw you back, again and again. This well-known quote by Richard Mullin is so very true: ‘The only man I envy, is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to’. Once you go on your first safari, Africa gets into your blood. You develop a deep longing to return to this magical continent, and to start planning your next African safari holiday. Be warned, Africa is very addictive!

7 Questions About African Safari Tours

Harriet Nimmo

Answered by

Harriet nimmo.

african trips 2023

Why should I choose an African safari tour?

“There are so many reasons to choose an African safari. Going on safari is an unforgettable experience, offering a heady mix of adventure, thrilling wildlife sightings, cultural encounters and spectacular scenery. It is a chance to escape the fast pace of the modern world. You’ll retreat to a simpler, more peaceful way of life, reconnecting with the daily rhythms of nature. For me, the wildlife sightings provide the adrenaline that keeps me coming back, time and time again. Who can ever forget their first sighting of an elephant in the wild or realizing just how tall a giraffe really is? And there is something so primeval when hearing the roar of a lion under a glittering night sky. Finally, going on safari can help protect Africa’s wild animals and wild places. The more paying visitors, the more local people are employed and the more incentive there is to protect Africa’s natural wonders.”

Which are the best African countries for going on safari?

“All the classic safari countries make wonderful destinations for African safari tours. These countries are Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. Which country you choose may depend on whether you’d like to combine your safari with another activity. For example you may like to add some beaches and/or Zanzibar in East Africa. Or perhaps Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe, or fine dining around Cape Town and the winelands of South Africa. If this is your first safari, South Africa makes a good option. The private reserves bordering Kruger National Park can almost guarantee sightings of the Big Five. South Africa also has good infrastructure and excellent levels of service. However, you will not get the sweeping savannahs and ‘Out of Africa’ scenes here. For these you need to travel to Kenya or Tanzania. Of course, these two countries also offer the incredible wildebeest migration. Note though, you need to travel here at the right time of year to see this. Zambia and Zimbabwe should also be considered. They have stunning national parks, including South Luangwa and Hwange respectively. Both countries are slightly more off the beaten track with less mass tourism. Botswana perhaps feels the wildest of the safari countries, although this comes with a price.”

What time of year is best for going on a safari?

“The best time of year, and the peak season, for most safaris is the Dry season. This is when the bush is less dense, and the wildlife is drawn to waterholes. Generally the wildlife is easier to find and see at this time. The Dry season means bright sunny days, and cooler nights. Of course, as the Dry season is peak safari season, there are more travelers and prices are higher. Dry season generally falls from May/June to September/October. You may also wish to consider going during the ‘Green season’ (also known as the Wet season or Emerald season). Although it may rain, often the showers are short downpours and then the sun comes back out again. It can be much cheaper to travel then, the bush is lush and green, and this is the breeding season for many of the animals. In East Africa, there are two Green seasons – the long rains between March and May, and the short rains from approximately October to December. In southern Africa the Green season is approximately from November to March. Temperatures can get very hot. Note that when it is wet there are more bugs and a greater risk of malaria.”

What wildlife can I expect to see?

“When it comes to seeing wildlife while on safari, this is wild nature and nothing can be guaranteed. You may see plenty of animals, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). But there will be game drives when you don’t see very much at all. That will make the sightings you do see all the more special. The joy of safaris, and what makes them so addictive, is that you just never know what you might see around the next corner. If you listen closely to, and learn from your guide, you’ll be able to enjoy all aspects of Africa’s wildlife. Everything from baobab trees to dung beetle, to chameleon and cheeky mongoose. Don’t forget to also focus on the birds, as even a very quiet game drive usually delivers some great bird sightings.”

What does a typical day look like on safari?

“All African safari holidays run to the same typical timetable. The best times to see wildlife, particularly predators being active, is at the beginning and end of the day. These golden hours at dawn and dusk are also the best times for photography. So be prepared for very early starts! You will usually be woken at dawn, and given tea, coffee, rusks or cereal. The aim is to get going on your game drive as early as possible at first light. The morning game drive usually lasts three to four hours, including a coffee and comfort break. You return to your camp or lodge for brunch. Then you are free to relax and take a siesta, or perhaps lie by the pool, during the middle of the day. It’s a good idea to bring something to read for this down time. Later in the afternoon you will meet again for tea and snacks, before setting out on your second game drive of the day. This will usually include a stop for sundowner drinks, to watch the setting sun. The game drive then returns to your accommodation in the dark, using a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals. Evening meals are usually served just after returning to camp. In some countries night drives are offered after dinner at around 8pm. Such drives can be a unique opportunity to spot nocturnal (only active at night) wildlife such as genets. Unless you have paid for exclusive use, be prepared for sharing your game-drive vehicle with other guests. This can be huge fun (although sometimes you need to be quite tolerant). It is always a good idea to offer to swap around your seating positions during your safari. ”

How much will this safari cost?

“The costs of an African safari can vary enormously. You could pay anything from US$125 to US$1000 per person, per night. Sometimes considerably more. Safaris can be an expensive holiday, and you generally get what you pay for. At the budget end of the spectrum are African safari packages where you join organized tours, departing on set dates, with other groups of people. South Africa and Kenya offer some of the best value-for-money safaris. Your choice of accommodation will affect the cost of your safari. Mobile safaris, where you sleep in tents, are great for groups of friends or families traveling together. Some safari lodges have taken luxury to the extreme, with private plunge pools etc. That said, you will probably have the same wildlife-viewing experience as staying in a more rustic lodge. It’s a matter of deciding what features are most important to you. If your reserve or lodge is remote, getting there will also impact the price. To visit the Okavango Delta, in Botswana, you can only fly into the Delta. There are no road transfers, so this adds to the price of your trip. The Serengeti is accessible by road, but this is a long, bone-rattling journey. It’s much easier and more comfortable to take a quick trip in a small plane. Whatever the costs of your safari, if you’ve experienced good service, do tip generously. A few extra dollars or Euros will make a huge difference to your guide or lodge staff.”

What should I consider when choosing an African safari tour?

“There is a lot of considerations to be taken into account when choosing an African safari tour operator. These include: If you are traveling with children, choose a family-friendly tour or lodge. In addition, you may prefer to choose a safari in a malaria-free area, for example in parts of South Africa. What type of safari do you want to go on? There are organized tours, departing on set dates, joining other groups of people. Or do you want an exclusive, tailor-made safari just for you? Are you happy to camp or do you want to stay in a luxury lodge? Your budget will probably determine your choices. Do you want to combine your safari with beaches, South Africa’s winelands, or a trip to Victoria Falls? This will help determine which country to choose.”

"The tour is a very complete experience. in both Soain and Portugal you cover the essentials of each city with the tour guides but also have time to explore on your own. In Morocco, the itinerary covered all the must dos (Marrakech, Fez and the dessert) with lots of other interesting destinations in between. The tour is very high paced, with sometimes late nights and early mornings, which allows you to make the most of each day and cover a lot. You also get to meet people from all around the world, with around 50 people in each group you’re part of and travel with. All in all, I considered it a wonderful experience

"This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

Destination Must-See's

Africa Continent ms1

‘The Big 5’:

A trip to Africa is not complete without experiencing a wildlife safari. Safaris allow you to get up close to the wild animals where they live and feed. You will be going on the search for the illusive ‘Big Five’ game: the African lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the Cape buffalo. They are nicknamed the ‘big five’ because they are the most difficult animals to catch. On safari you will not only witness a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat, but you will also be surrounded by beautiful scenery and stunning landscapes as well.

Africa Continent ms2

Cosmopolitan Cities:

The continent is home to many great port cities that sit along the shores of the stunning seas and thriving economic centers of business that boast rich histories reaching back thousands of years. From Cape Town and Johannesburg, the most populous and dynamic cities in South Africa, to Casablanca and Fes in Morocco, where contemporary art and culture scenes thrive along ancient traditions.

Africa Continent ms3

Luxor, Egypt:

Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum. Travelers have visited this city, parted by the Nile River, for centuries. Even the Greeks and Romans would journey to see the treasures that lie here. Its immense number of monuments is incredible. There’s the famous Valley of the Kings, which boasts 63 royal tombs, one even more elaborate than the next…and Karnak, a vast complex of temples and gigantic statues including the Temple of Amun, known to be the largest religious building ever constructed. Luxor will bring you back to ancient times while you are awed by the wealth of its leaders and the skill of its people.

Africa Continent ms4

Victoria Falls:

This powerful cascade is spectacular. At one mile wide and 360 feet high, it is the largest waterfall in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa, the Falls lie along the Zambezi River. Game-viewers, bird-watchers, thrill-seekers and fishermen flock here to explore the Falls and surrounding pristine wilderness protected by the Zambezi National Park.

Covering over 3 million square miles of northern Africa, the Sahara is said to encompass a staggering 10% of the African continent. Scientists believe that the Sahara Desert has been inhabited since 6000 B.C. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Europeans are just some of its former residents. Today, the population is around 4 million and consists mainly of nomads who move from place to place as a result of the harsh conditions. Over time, the wind, heat and dry weather has created a tapestry of stunning landscapes that include sand dunes, sand seas (called ergs), barren stone plateaus, gravel plains and salt flats.

Explore the Markets:

Souks or local markets immerse you in the culture of the people. No matter where you are, you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewelry, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Africa Continent md3

Cruise the Nile River:

Along the banks of Africa’s longest river sits bustling bazaars that lie in the shadow of Ancient pyramids and temples. Located among the cliffs on the west bank of the Nile is the Valley of the Kings, home to the tombs of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. The tombs were built here over a period of almost 500 years. There are 63 tombs in the valley, 26 of them carved for kings, and the others were carved for royal family members.

Africa Continent md4

Vineyards of South Africa:

South Africa has some really great wine. Discover the beauty of the rolling green hills in the heart of the winelands region and take in the colorful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

Travel + Leisure Readers' 10 Favorite Safari Outfitters of 2023

T+L readers said these safari outfitters strike the perfect balance between respect for nature and animal-spotting thrills in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Courtesy of Thomson Safaris

When it comes to trying to spot animals in their own habitat, there’s only one element that can really make a difference: instinct. And these safari outfitters all know the terrain so well that they’ve become known for creating “once-in-a-lifetime” experiences on almost every trip, simply by knowing how to follow the continent’s most famous residents on their home turf. Whether it’s searching for the Big Five in Kruger National Park or gorilla trekking in Rwanda , our readers put their trust in these safaris to show them the best of the animal world.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Staff/guides
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Consistency is key when it comes to leading safaris, as seven of the top 10 reader favorites return to the list from last year . Making its debut in the No. 2 spot is Piper & Heath Travel , which readers hailed for its thoughtfulness when it comes to guests’ specific needs. A family with a 7-year-old found “they were very purposeful in selecting camps and advocating for guides that were particularly family-friendly.” Another said that, ahead of a three-generation trip, a conscientious travel consultant initiated a video call with all their grandchildren and “answered the hundreds of questions they had.” Yet another reader raved about “outstanding travel advice, planning, and execution” on a private 12-person, two-week safari. Piper & Heath Travel’s dedication to the environment was also appreciated, as one reader had a “seamless“ Kenya trip that was ”conservation-focused,” while another applauded the company’s focus on “sustainability.”

Africa Adventure Consultants (No. 5) and Rothschild Safaris (No. 9) also made it back to the list this year.

When it comes to situations out in the wild, you just never know what you’ll face. Thomson Safaris (up from No. 7 last year to No. 3 in 2023) was beloved by one reader who had a medical emergency in the bush and received top-notch care: “They saved my life.” Another said, “Falling asleep to the grunts of hippos sharing the Serengeti's starry canopy is something I'll never forget.” To see which other safari outfitters T+L readers ranked in the top 10, keep scrolling.

Alluring Africa

Courtesy of Alluring Africa

Team members at Alluring Africa like to think of themselves as “safari matchmakers.” After all, everyone is looking for something different in an animal-spotting adventure, and the Florida-based company has long been hailed as one of the foremost experts in finding the perfect match, as one reader called their trip the “best African experience I could have ever dreamed of having.” Rising from No. 3 last year to the top spot, which it also held in 2018 , it’s no wonder the operator has been attracting repeat customers. One reader said they’d been on four trips and will “trust only Alluring Africa with all of my Africa destinations,” adding that “the first African ‘trip of a lifetime’ was so addicting, I continue to go back for more.”

Best African experience I could have ever dreamed of having.

Africa's "Big Five"

Meet the "big five".

Lions (Panthera leo) are often seen in Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya), Serengeti & Tarangire national parks, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania). Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs. – big and dangerous enough to keep most predators at bay. Buffalo roam the Sabi Sands Game Reserve (South Africa) and Serengeti National Park (Tanzania). black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) may be spotted in Ngorongoro Crater and the Masai Mara. leopards (Panthera pardus) are prevalent in most parks and reserves in east and southern Africa; you'll often need to look up to spot one... since they spend much of their time in trees. African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the world's largest land mammal, is a fixture throughout the Masai Mara, as well as Amboseli and Serengeti national parks. Although they are not among the "Big Five," a gorilla trek in Rwanda is one of life's memorable experiences.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Meet Maasai warriors, artisans and school children eager to share their customs and homeland with you in moments so heartwarming you'll return home transformed. The pulse of South Africa is, of course, in its people... in the streets and squares of Jo'burg and Cape Town where a multitude of cultures (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, European, Malaysian and Indian, to name a few) collide and mix in dazzling displays of art, music, dance and cuisine... and in the bushveld, where you'll encounter tribal traditions that sustain a proud and irrepressible people... always ready to share their customs, language, dances and songs with a warm welcome.

Meet Africa's majestic wildlife with us, the World's Best Safari Company

1. Highlights of Southern Africa

The first delightful dish on our 2023 safari tour list features all of  Southern Africa's most famous destinations . We begin in vibrant  Cape Town ,  South Africa , to take in all the sights and sounds of one of the best cities in the world. Filled with breathtaking scenery, pristine beaches and colourful city vibes, the Mother City is the ideal intro for a memorable trip to Africa.

View of Cape Town and Table Mountain

A playground of leisure-lovers, adventurers and jetsetters alike

After a few nights at the foot of Table Mountain, continue to the land of fiery sunsets and ruby-red dunes,  Tswalu Kalahari Reserve . Enjoy this wondrous world of desert-adapted wildlife and curious creatures. The reserve provides fantastic opportunities for viewing black rhinos, black-maned lions, cheetahs, meerkats, aardvarks, and even pangolins.

Tswalu has an entirely distinctive ecosystem with unique and diverse wildlife

From this arid terrain, we head toward the lush leopard lands of the  Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve  in the  Greater Kruger National Park . Live in the lap of luxury of some of the country's swankiest lodges – all while enjoying Big 5 safari sightings for days. With a high calibre game viewing and an even higher standard of hospitality, Sabi Sand has established a legendary reputation in the world of safari.

The final leg of your journey takes you north to gawk at the Victoria Falls grandeur. Although we're often at a loss for words to describe Victoria Falls, the Kololo moniker "Mosi-oa-Tunya," which means "The Smoke That Thunders," is certainly the most fitting one. Its epic proportions and the sheer amount of water plummeting over its crags every minute makes this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site arguably the greatest waterfall in the world.

2. Luxury Botswana Safari

Providing a generous portion of  Botswana's  magical wilderness and second on our African safari tours for 2023 list is the  Luxury Botswana Safari . From colossal elephant herds to a vast array of bird species, there's no shortage of animals on this trip! Start your journey at  Chobe National Park , famed for having the highest concentration of elephants in the world. Chobe's dynamic landscape lends itself to a variety of fauna and flora, with superb lodges to choose from.

Your next stop offers an entirely contrasting ecosystem within the Savuti Marsh. The marsh – once sourced by an inland lake until tectonic movements cut off the water supply – has since been filled by the Savuti Channel. This sprawling wetland attracts thousands of animals to the region and is known for its high concentrations of lions and hyenas.

Conclude your African adventure on a high note in one of the most iconic safari destinations. Look forward to a varied and fascinating terrain in the  Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve . 3. Unforgettable East Africa Safari

One of our top African safari tours for 2023 features the greatest wildlife show on earth, the  Great Wildebeest Migration . This  Unforgettable East Africa Safari  begins in  Nairobi  – the gateway to Kenya . Next, branching out of the capital, you'll venture to the country's most notable and revered reserve, the  Maasai Mara . It's here where the Great Migration begins each year. Watch as millions of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes traverse vast plains, formidable rivers and terrain in search of greener pastures.

Before crossing the border into  Tanzania , you'll stop at  Lake Nakuru  and travel across the huge plains of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru, one of the Rift Valley soda lakes, is frequently painted pink as tens of thousands of flamingos flock to its shallow waters, making it a real sight to behold.

From here, we cross over into Tanzania under the watchful eye of Mount Kilimanjaro. You'll spend a night near the shores of bustling  Lake Manyara  before venturing to the ever-so-famous  Serengeti National Park . Along with the Great Migration, the Serengeti is also home to the Big 5, a wealth of other wildlife, as well as ultra-luxurious lodges. There's always something to see here, often near the rivers and watering holes where the herbivores congregate, and predators wait.

This East Africa extravaganza ends with a natural beauty bang in the  Ngorongoro Crater  and  Tarangire National Park . Ngorongoro, known for its leopard sightings, is surrounded by a variety of vegetation, including woodland on one slope and grassland on the other. Again, animals, including lions, black rhinos and elephants, come in abundance in both regions.

4. Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Something to tick off (or definitely add to) your travel bucket list is spending time with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Number four on our top African safari tours for 2023 is our  Gorilla Trekking Adventure . This tour does not only give you the opportunity to track these magnificent mountain primates but also allows you to explore other  Uganda  and  Rwanda  gems. As a starter, you can look forward to laid-back living on Lake Victoria in  Entebbe  – before the real adventure begins!

Best time to visit Uganda: Boots on the shore of Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria's expansive waters

Enjoy the lavish Eden that is Uganda's largest wildlife reserve.  Murchison Falls National Park  covers an astonishing 350,000 acres and promises a plethora of wildlife as well as striking water vistas from whichever vantage point. Following this, you'll move on to  Kibale Forest National Park , one of Uganda's few regions with lowland and montane forest. While the national park's plethora of primates is undoubtedly its main drawcard, Kibale is also home to other (more elusive) animals such as leopard, buffalo, duiker, and bush pig.

Hippos

Hippos in Murchison Falls National Park

Raw African wilderness, sublime scenery and the chance to see the tree-climbing lions await in  Queen Elizabeth National Park . After a couple of comfortable nights surrounded by acacia woodland, savannah, and swamps dotted by crater lakes, you'll head to the headlines of this trip,  Bwindi Impenetrable Forest  and  Volcanoes National Park .

Explore dense leafy canopies and uncover Biwindi's and Volcanoes' wildlife mysteries. The verdant forest paths frequently have patches of mist drifting through – creating a magical ambience straight out of a storybook. Here, in this jungle wonderland, you will find critically-endangered mountain gorillas. Spend hours exploring and spending time with these precious primates.

5. Safari and Beach Dream Holiday

With Cape Town, the Kruger's Sabi Sand, and Victoria Falls, Southern Africa's most beloved destinations once again take centre stage on this tour – but with an added beach bonus! In addition to vibrant city living, Big 5 safari luxury and spectacular natural wonders help yourself to a big helping of tropical island bliss in marvellous  Mauritius .

Mauritius is a heavenly location all year round and will make your dreams of crystal blue sea lapping up on infinite stretches of white-sandy beaches come true. And the picture is completed by coral reefs, tropical forests, and exquisite hotels. The island's extreme diversity can be perplexing. The northern and western coastlines hum with activity and provide a variety of stores and eateries. On the other hand, the southern coast continues to be an unspoilt hideaway of rugged and rocky beaches, untamed forests, and towering cliffs. And then there's the eastern coast, that's more tranquil and home to some of the island's most opulent resorts.

2023 bucket-list trips you should start planning now

Want to start planning for the year ahead? Here are more than 20 reasons to consider a once-in-a-lifetime trip in 2023.

WorldPride crosses the equator

Since its inaugural event in Rome more than two decades ago, this semiannual global celebration of LGBTIQ+ pride has never been held in the Southern Hemisphere – until  2023 , when it will touch down in Sydney for 17 days of parades, parties, exhibits, immersive art installations, sporting events and more.

Key dates: Though the extravaganza runs from February 17 to March 5, things really kick off with an opening concert on February 24 starring Kylie Minogue – “not only a beloved musician and rainbow icon, but the highest selling Australian-born solo artist of all time,” per Sydney WorldPride CEO Kate Wickett. The Bondi Beach Party on March 4 is another hot ticket, with Nicole Scherzinger set to headline.

Dominica parties hard

One of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel picks for 2023 , the Caribbean island of Dominica has a big year ahead. Its three main festivals are back in business: following successful runs in 2022, Jazz N’ Creole and Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival are returning, and Mas Domnik, aka “The Real Mas,” is back for Carnival for the first time since the pandemic.

Key dates: Mas Domnik , February 20 to 21; Jazz ‘N Creole , April 30; World Creole Music Festival , October 27 to 29.

Latin American and Caribbean Carnivals for every traveler

Burning Man explores its animal instincts

Welcoming 75,069 participants at its peak in 2022, Nevada’s artsy, week-long Black Rock Desert gathering returns in 2023 with the theme Animalia .

“This year’s Burning Man theme will celebrate the animal world and our place in it – animals real and imagined, mythic and remembered – and explore the curious mental constructs that allow us to believe that imagined animals are real, real animals are imagined, and that somehow, despite all evidence to the contrary, mankind is somehow not part of the animal kingdom,” writes Stuart Mangrum for the blog Burning Man Journal.

Key dates: The event is scheduled for August 27 to September 4. Ticket on-sale  dates have yet to be announced for 2023, but early passes have previously gone on sale in February, the main sale in late March and last-minute tickets at the beginning of August. Prior registration is required for all options.

Sporting and cultural events

Super bowl lvii.

At this point in the NFL season, the teams battling it out for Super Bowl supremacy are still to be determined – but we do know Rihanna is providing the halftime entertainment. If that’s enough to pique your interest (and how could it not be?>), tickets are still available (on the resale market, for big spenders only). And there’s plenty to do in the Phoenix metro area before and after the big game, which is taking place at State Farm Stadium Glendale, home to the Arizona Cardinals .

Key date:  Super Bowl LVII will take place on Sunday, February 12.

2023 FIA Formula One World Championship

Engines will be revving in Bahrain  come early March, with three days of testing leading up to the first race of the F1 season at the track in Sakhir .

Key dates: Testing begins March 3, then the 2023 season kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5.

Where and how to watch sport like a local

Four people sit on a bench by a lake in a park with cherry trees in blossom, Tokyo, Japan

Sakura season

Japan has finally reopened to individual travelers, so if catching the cherry blossoms at their peak has long been on your list, now’s a great time to go. While you should check the forecast before committing to a particular region (the trees are in full bloom at staggered times across the country),  Fukuoka is a safe bet for hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) in March. The biggest city on the southern island of Kyūshū , this  Best in Travel pick offers fantastic food and a beautiful bounty of flowering trees.

Key dates: Because it’s a natural phenomenon, there’s no set schedule here. In 2022, the bloom began in mid-March and peaked a couple weeks later, per Kyuhoshi.com  – but you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast as the season draws closer before making any nonrefundable plans.

Eurovision Song Contest

Typically the winning country hosts the Eurovision finals the following year, but when Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra took home the coveted glass microphone in 2022, plans had to change. A twin city of Odesa , Liverpool was chosen from a shortlist of seven cities to host on behalf of the besieged Eastern European nation in 2023.

Key dates: The Eurovision semifinals are slated for May 9 and 11; the final showdown follows on May 13.

An aerial view of Westminster Abbey, London.

Coronation of Charles and Camilla

This spring, King Charles III and the Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned at Westminster Abbey , continuing 900 years of tradition. Unless you’re an A-lister, the ceremony isn’t open to the public, though traditionally there’s been a procession through the streets of London afterward. Reports indicate that given the current economic climate this will likely be a more modest affair than Elizabeth II’s back in ’53. Still, expect rates on accommodations to soar and availability to be minimal around coronation weekend.

Key dates: The coronation is scheduled for May 6.

Where to explore royal history in London

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

If it felt weird to watch the World Cup ahead of the winter holidays rather than over the summer, not to worry – the international soccer competition returns to its usual season in 2023, when women’s teams from 32 countries take the pitch in Australia and New Zealand .

Key dates: The group stage begins July 20, and the round of 16 starts August 5. The quarterfinals take place on August 11 and 12 and the semis on August 15 and 16. The third-place game will be held on August 19 and the final on August 20.

Rugby World Cup 2023

South Africa will defend its title, Portugal will play its first match on this stage in 16 years and Chile will join the fray for the first time ever when the Rugby World Cup comes to France . The pool matches will be played at stadiums across the country, from Paris to Marseille  and  Lyon to Lille  – on the off chance you need an excuse for a road trip .

Key dates: The opening match kicks off September 8, the quarterfinals are October 14 and 15 and the semis are October 20 and 21. The bronze final is October 27, and the final is October 28.

Museum openings

Exterior, International African American Museum, Charleston, SC

International African American Museum

More than 20 years in the making, the International African American Museum opens in 2023 in Charleston , South Carolina .

Covering almost 150,000 sq ft of exhibition, learning and interpretive space on the site of a notorious former slave-trading port, the Henry Cobb–designed IAAM has nine galleries with exhibitions delving into the horrors of slavery and the African diaspora’s contributions to US history, among other themes. There’s also a memorial garden, an infinity reflection pool and a Center for Family History that will serve as a much-needed resource for African American genealogy.

"The International African American Museum’s work meets at the intersection of local, national and international stories that comprise a holistic view of the African American journey," chief learning and engagement officer Malika Pryor-Martin tells Lonely Planet. "[It's] not a monument to the carnage and injustice that was the slave trade. It is a testament to the fundamentally human experience of African American people who navigated great pain and joy: a people who survived and triumphed and are here now, telling their own story."

Key dates: The IAAM was scheduled to open in late January, but it's since been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. It's still slated for 2023, though, so keep an eye on the official site and socials for updates.

Grand Egyptian Museum

After years of delays (both COVID-related and not) Giza’s long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum finally looks set to open. The showstopping US$1.1 billion, 484,000-sq-ft facility has “jutting, prowlike lines [that] resemble an enormous ship run aground in the desert,” National Geographic reported in October, housing 12 exhibition halls and 100,000 artifacts, including more than 5000 burial treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun – on display together here for the first time ever.

Key dates: Doors should be opening any day now. As of mid-December, the GEM had hosted a limited number of private events and group visits, with a trial phase for public visits due to be announced “soon,” per the museum’s Instagram .

Robot Science Museum

Back in 2019, Istanbul- and Seoul-based Melike Altınışık Architects won a design competition for a new Seoul museum dedicated to robotics – to be built by them, too. The RSM was slated to open in late 2022 in Chang-dong’s “New Economic Center,” and while updates haven’t been forthcoming, we’re hopeful this is the year.

Key dates:  TBA.

Istanbul Modern

After four years at its temporary home in Beyoğlu , Turkey’s first museum of contemporary art is set to reopen at its original location in Karaköy , in stunning new digs designed by architectural maestro Renzo Piano. The five-floor, 15,000-sq-m (161,459-sq-ft) space will include an outdoor cafe and sculpture garden, a below-ground cinema and a rooftop deck – not to mention permanent and temporary galleries boasting 3300 sq m (35,521 sq ft) of exhibition space.

Key dates:  Piano's first project in Turkey will be unveiled for visitors on May 4.

14 must-do things on your trip to Istanbul

A view of El Capitan mountain in Yosemite shows the "firefall" - a natural phenomenon when a waterfall appears as though it's glowing.

Catch the Yosemite firefall

Between mid- and late February, when the conditions are just right, Yosemite National Park ’s Horsetail Fall glows electric-orange at sunset, giving the illusion of a plummeting flume of fire. In recent years, it’s become a can’t-miss event . (Blame social media.)

Key dates: Though it’s impossible to predict the exact dates the phenomenon will occur, it almost always happens in February. If your schedule’s flexible, check it out during the week; you’ll need a reservation on the weekends of February 10 to 12, February 17 to 19 and February 24 to 26.

Aurora borealis and silhouette of standing man and woman who pointing finger on northern lights. Lofoten islands,Norway. Aurora. Sky with stars and polar lights.

See the northern lights

Though the next solar maximum isn’t expected until 2025, the sun’s activity ramps up as the maximum grows closer, making 2023 as good a time as any to go looking for the aurora borealis. Head north : you’ll have the best odds in Iceland , Norway and Greenland , as well as towns like Fairbanks , Alaska , and Churchill , Canada .

Key dates: The best time to see the northern lights varies by location, however the northern hemisphere's winter is the ideal time for a visit. Here's what you need to know about planning a trip to see the northern lights in Europe .

Make a reservation at a US national park

Many of the USA ’s national parks had timed-entry requirements during and in the aftermath of the pandemic, the majority of which have begun to ease. Yosemite announced in September that it was rolling back the reservation system for guests in summer 2023, while other parks still require permits year-round for certain activities, including viewing the sunrise at  Haleakalā National Park and climbing Angels Landing at Zion National Park .

Key dates:  Currently, most national parks have yet to announce whether or not reservations will be required during peak season (usually mid-May to mid-September) – so one park in particular is on your bucket list, keep checking for news. Of course, permits are still required to camp in the national parks, with most reservations opening up a few months in advance; specifics vary from park to park .

Woman walking along the edge of a cliff on the Inca Trail.

Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

One of Peru’s most iconic treks, the 24-mile (39km) Inca Trail reopened to hikers in 2022. At first it wasn’t as busy as it had been before the pandemic , but things have since picked up.

Only 500 people are allowed on the Inca Trail per day, and only 4000 or so can enter Machu Picchu , so get your trip on the books as soon as possible to get your first choice of dates (and to have time to train for the challenging climb).

Key dates: High season is between June and September , so book well in advance if you’re considering a trip then. Be sure to pick a reputable operator, as there were reports of overbooking last summer.

How hiking the Inca Trail with my mom revamped our entire relationship

Schedule a safari

Whether your dream trip has you following the Great Migration in Kenya or Botswana , Zambia or Namibia , there’s a safari experience that’s right for you. Deciding on a destination is half the battle; once you’ve worked that out, it’ll be much easier to determine the best time to go.

Key dates: In general, aim to book your safari between June and September, but look into the specifics before booking any nonrefundable fares. Remember that some countries have stellar wildlife watching year-round (or at least as late as October and November).

Cars driving the crowded Going-to-the-Sun road on the 4th of July national holiday

Take the wheel on Going-to-the-Sun Road

You’ll be limited to 40mph at lower elevations and 25mph at alpine heights, but no matter – the thrill of driving Glacier National Park ’s Going-to-the-Sun Rd doesn’t involve high speeds. It’s all about the scenery: winding through 50 miles of natural splendor, this is one of the most spectacular stretches of pavement in the country .

Vehicle reservations were required between late May and mid-September in 2022, but the situation is still TBD for 2023, so keep an eye on the park's official site for news and updates.

Key dates: While the low-elevation sections of the road remain open year-round, the more treacherous parts remain closed until the weather cooperates. Usually it’s fully open by early July, though in 2022 late winter weather pushed things back to July 13.

Two incredible itineraries to explore Montana's Glacier National Park

Watch the solar eclipse

Don’t look directly into the sun if you’re out and about in the Western Hemisphere this fall, when an annular solar eclipse is set to leave parts of North, Central and South America in shadow.

These are 5 of the world's best places for stargazing

According to NASA, the eclipse “will begin in the United States, traveling from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast. Weather permitting, the annular eclipse will be visible in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as some parts of California, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. [It] will continue on to Central America, passing over Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Panama. In South America, the eclipse will travel through Colombia before ending off the coast of Natal, Brazil, in the Atlantic Ocean.”

Key date: October 14

Africa Tours & Holidays

Elephant herd with 3 young calves walking across the Serengeti on a dusty day

Souqs, savannas, safaris and the Sahara – the lure of Africa is its diverse wildlife, thousands of cultures and breathtaking landscapes.

Originally meaning ‘to travel’ in Arabic and Swahili, the word ‘safari’ can describe many types of epic adventure in Africa. There’s the ancient Egypt kind – discovering the lost city of Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings. The nomadic one – veering away from Morocco’s souqs and medinas and being hosted by a Berber family in the Sahara. The local village version – cherishing moments of interaction with Maasai , San and Malagasy cultures. And, of course, the wildlife way – heading in search of the Big Five in any number of game reserves and parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kruger and Lake Nakuru, to name a few. What does your African adventure look like?

Announcing the Hot List winners of 2024

By CNT Editors

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

All listings featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
