The Alhambra of Granada Spain
We all know that discovering Spain off the beaten path is our passion. That is why my business has the name Spain Less Traveled , because I do believe that the lesser-known parts of Spain are the country’s best secrets. But it’s also understandable why some cities in Spain are popular and why first-time visitors (and repeat travelers too!) would want to see these places.
Here are our top picks for “Spain 101,” the highlights of Spain.
If you are visiting Spain for the first time and can’t decide where to go (and how much time to spend there), I’ve got you covered. These places are favorites amongst visitors to Spain. Since they are popular, we also provided some off the beaten path tips for each place. Hopefully, this will help inspire your dream Spain trip.
And if you need even more help breaking it down, check out our “ Where should I visit in Spain if…. ?” article that covers the top three destinations and beyond!
Even if you have traveled to Spain before and skipped some of these places, here are a few Spanish highlights that you don’t want to miss!
Map of Spain. Spain is a large country, and with just a few short weeks it is impossible to see it all. But we outlined some of the highlights for a 14 day Spain itinerary. Image: VectorStock

Of course, we’d love to work with you to customize it and plan the to Spain of your dreams. Especially if this will be your first time visiting Spain, Spain Less Traveled would love to help make sure your trip is perfect just for you. The best of Spain: Madrid, Spain’s vibrant and authentic capital (3-4 Days)
Madrid’s Plaza Mayor
Madrid, Spain’s vibrant and authentic capital (and largest city) is worth spending a few days. Often completely skipped, or simply used as a stopover, friendly Madrid is worth a visit in its own rite. Unique neighborhoods, a great food scene (and a city where you can sample some of the best food in Spain ), world class museums, and bustling local plazas are just a few reasons to make sure you allocate at least a few days of your Spain itinerary to Madrid .
Madrid Highlights
Madrid is the perfect city for art lovers with its world class museums The Prado and the Reina Sofía Museum. Also worth a visit are the Royal Palace as well as Retiro Park for a stroll with the locals. Stop by the city’s oldest Plaza Mayor. Nearby Mercado San Miguel is a popular (and touristy) spot to try some of Spain’s local food. Nearby, Puerta del Sol is the city’s gathering spot where you can find the famous bear statue (note: during 2023 there is a considerable amount of construction in Sol).
For a great view of Madrid, looking down Gran Vía, famous for its ornate buildings, go to the top of Palacio de Cibeles. This is the ayuntamiento of Madrid, which means that houses Madrid’s city government. This has got to be one of the most beautiful city hall, buildings in the world, and with a great view from the top too!
Every Sunday, Madrid hosts El Rastro, a huge flea market (one of the biggest in the world) Starting from Plaza de Cascorro in Madrid’s La Latina neighborhood, the stalls go on for blocks and blocks. Also in La Latina is Cava Baja, Madrid’s popular street for tapas.
If you have an extra day in Madrid, a day trip to Toledo or Segovia are popular options.
(More of the best day trips from Madrid are here!)
Madrid Less Traveled
Those are just the highlights. But Madrid has so many hidden gems. If you want to visit one of Madrid’s most beautiful plazas, and one more local than Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Olavide in the city’s Chamberí neighborhood is perhaps our Madrid favorite. Madrid’s newly reopened archaeology museum is a great spot for those interested in Spanish archeology history. And the Sorolla Museum (showcasing the work of Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla), has a beautiful Andaluz style patio.
Madrid is a great city to shop for little things to bring home from Spain. The boutique shops in the neighborhoods Malasaña and Barrio de Las Letras/Huertas carry cute locally made souvenirs and gifts. Shoes made in Spain are famous all over the world. And for many reasons: they’re comfortable, durable, stylish and adorable. For shoes “hecho en españa” the shops on on Calle Fuencarral and on Calle de Augusto Figueroa. For Spanish food products, head to some of Madrid’s more local markets. Mercado de Chamberí and Mercado Maravillas are a great place to try and buy regional products.
If you are looking for a day trip with fewer tourists, head to the town of Chinchón. Just an hour by bus from Madrid, this small town feels a world away from Madrid.
Finally, for Madrid’s up and coming tapas streets, head to Calle de Ibiza near Retiro park or Calle de Ponzano in the northern part of the center of the city. And Mercado San Fernando is a much more local option to Mercado San Miguel with food stalls from all over Spain and the world (there’s even a book shop selling books by the kilo).
Be sure to also check out the Madrid travel guide for more Madrid local tips, information about getting around, Madrid’s neighborhoods, where to stay, and more!
Barcelona: tips to see the highlights and skip the crowds (3-4 Days)
Barcelona’s Eixample Neighborhood from above. Getty Images
Barcelona, Catalonia is Spain’s most visited city (and second largest in terms of population). Diverse and very international, Barcelona is a unique destination that most visitors to Spain want to visit. Come here for some beach time, modernista architecture, and to practice your Catalan. You can check out the rest of our Barcelona insider tips here.
(Are you a city lover? Check out our top 30 cities in Spain too!)
Barcelona Highlights
Architect Anton Gaudí is synonymous with Barcelona. His most stunning (yet still unfinished) La Sagrada Familia is a must see in Barcelona. Reserve your tickets in advance. Once inside, it’s hard not to be blown away by his signature whimsical style and dance of light, colors, and shadows. Also well-known, you can visit Gaudís Casa Batlló as well Casa Mila and of course Park Güell.
Being a coastal city, Barceloneta Beach is perhaps Spain’s most popular urban beach. Get lost in the charming Gothic Quarter. Lively and rambunctious Las Ramblas is also very popular with tourists.
Montserrat, located in the mountains and accessible by train from the city center, makes for an interesting day trip. But the smaller city of Girona is our personal favorite Barcelona day trip. Climb its medieval walls to take in the views. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, this is a must!
Barcelona Less Traveled
Very close to Plaza de Cataluña, the Eixample neighborhood is beautiful, central and has a much more local feel. Gracia, another Barcelona neighborhood, feels more like a small village than a big city. The old bullring (bullfighting is illegal in Cataluña) near Plaza de España has been converted into a shopping area with good views (and restaurants) on top. Worth a visit for the architecture alone.
And speaking of Spanish architecture , if modernista is your style, don’t miss Hospital de Sant Pau a work of Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The views from the roof of Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar are some of the best in the city. And if you are looking for a less crowded beach, yet still within the city limits, Playa de Bogatell is a good bet.
And for an amazing view of the city without the crowds, head to the skyscraper of Torre Glòries. There is an observation deck.
The town of Vic, a hotbed of Catalan independence accessible by commuter train makes for a different and very unique day trip. If you have access to a car, the coastline north of Barcelona, called the Costa Brava is stunning. Wine lovers might want to head to Penedès, one of Spain’s most beautiful wine regions. Even without a car, some places such as Tossa de Mar are accessible.
Andalucía: Bucket List Southern Spain
Image: VectorStock
Andalucía, the famous South of Spain has so many wonderful places to explore. Many travelers like to visit some of the region’s highlights on a highlights of Spain trip. Here are some of the region’s top sites. Warning: Andalucía will leave you wanting to come back for more and more and even more.
And we understand why!
In fact, many travelers spend their entire time exploring Andalucía. The possibilities of things to see and do in this special region of Spain is endless. (Check out the best of classic Andalucía, the best of Spain’s beautiful south , where you can download our free 14-day Andalucía Spain travel itinerary)
The best of Spain: Passionate Seville (3-4 Days)
Spend some time wandering Seville’s colorful streets.
Seville, or Sevilla, Andalucía’s passionate capital is worth spending several days in. Sizzling in the summer, Andalucía’s largest city has so much to offer visitors. Take some time to explore the city, and make sure to leave room for a day trip! Some of Spain’s best pueblos blancos are nearby!
Seville Highlights
You will want at least a few days in Seville, especially if you plan on doing a day trip. Sevilla is also a great city to just to enjoy the chill, so the less rushed the better.
Seville’s top two attractions are the Alcázar and the Cathedral. Both should not be missed, and both are best to visit early in the morning. Many believe that the Alcazar was built in the moorish style, but it’s actually Mudéjar as it was built for the Catholic King Pedro I. But the tile work and intricate carvings are so exquisite you won’t even notice this difference. The Cathedral is the largest in Spain and for fantastic views of the city as well as the orange grove in the patio below, be sure to climb to the top of the Giralda, the bell tower. Both of these are located in Barrio de Santa Cruz, Seville’s old Jewish quarter.
(For much more information about exploring Spain’s Jewish history, have a look at our travel guide to Sephardic Spain .)
Plaza de España, complete with a “river” that runs through the plaza where you can rent a boat, is an impressive monument built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Be sure to walk around and have a look at the homage to each of the provinces of Spain.
Across the river, the Triana Neighborhood is known for its lovely market, ceramics workshops, and tapas bars. The Centro Cerámica, a more modern building, houses the ceramics museum. Triana is a pleasant walk or bike ride from the center.
From Seville you can take an organized day trip to Ronda as well as some of the pueblos blancos, but my recommended day trip is described in the next section (Seville Less Traveled).
Seville is the city to catch a flamenco show. There are several options but the shows at Casa de la Memoria tend to be a hit amongst visitors.
(Learn more about the things to do in Seville Spain !)
Seville Less Traveled
Seville is just so charming that wandering around is always a treat. Renaissance mixed with mudéjar, for even more tile work overload, be sure to also visit Casa de Pilatos, Stop by the small ceramics shop just across the street where you can buy authentic Andaluz tiles.
The area around Alameda de Hércules is where locals tend to gather for drinks and, you guessed it…. tapas. The big park sometimes hosts outdoor concerts and events.
Hip and artsy, the Macarena area is filled with great boutique shops. There is also some great street art around the neighborhood. Near by the Mercado de Feria is a great place to try some of Seville’s local flavors.
For a special day trip from Seville, we recommend renting a car for the day and exploring Spain’s pueblos' blancos on your own. True, there are packaged tours, but they tend to linger in Ronda and not spend much (if any) time in the authentically local villages. Grazalema and Olvera are two of our top picks, but there are so many others. If we had to name our favorite day trip in Spain, this would be it.
Granada: The most beautiful city in Spain (2-3 Days)
The whitewashed houses of the Albaicín, Granada’s old moorish quarter.
Granada, situated in the foothills of Andalucía’s Sierra Nevada mountain range, is Spain’s most visually breathtaking city.
Spend some time in Granada. And for in-depth Granada suggestions and recommendations check out our list of the top 10 things to do in Granada Spain!
The Alhambra, a brilliant Moorish fairy tale castle, all lit up, flanked in front of the snowy mountains is the signature Spain photo. We have a deep fondness for Granada.
We also have a comprehensive guide on how to visit the Alhambra . Granada is truly one of our favorite Spanish cities.
Granada Highlights
Obviously one can not go to Granada and miss the Alhambra, the best of Spain. With its palaces, gardens, fortresses, and castle , this cornerstone of Moorish architecture is on every list of best Islamic architecture in the world along with monuments such as the Taj Mahal and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Visiting the Alhambra requires pre-planning and even some strategy. But it is so worth it to be experience its beauty. (I regularly share Alhambra tips and tricks to the Travel Spain! community . Make sure you’ve joined us over there so you don’t miss anything).
But Granada is so much more than the Alhambra. Make sure to spend ample time here to wander around the Albaicín, the maze of an old Moorish quarter. You will be immediately transported to Morocco. Climb to the top for the signature Spain view (see above) at Mirador San Nicolás.
While not as impressive as Seville’s cathedral, the chapel of Granada’s cathedral is where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella are buried. And the area around the cathedra, Granada’s centro histórico is charming.
Home of the free tapa, and where that tradition lives on the most, a tapas hop on Calle Navas is a Granada locals’ staple.
Granada Less Traveled
Just across from the Alhambra, on the other side of the hill is Carmen de los Martires, with its beautiful gardens (there are peacocks!). The site is almost like a very mini-Alhambra, and is worth a visit.
A great alternative to Mirador San Nicolás is Granada’s mezquita mayor (mosque). The grounds are impressive in their own rite, and the beautiful open garden offers the same views as the mirador with a fraction of the crowds.
Spanish poet Federico García Lorca hails from Granada, and his childhood home, which is now a museum is on the other side town, the walk there provides a much more local taste of day to day life in Granada.
For a nice walk out of town head up through Sacromonte, Granada’s Roma neighborhood, where you can see flamenco shows in caves, up to the abbey (Abadía del Sacromonte). The views of the city below are fabulous, and the abbey has underground chapels.
Córdoba (more than a day trip on your Spain travel itinerary)
Córdoba’s famous cobalt blue flower pots during la Fiesta de los Patios.
While many visitors pass through Córdoba as a stopover between Seville and Madrid, not many spend more than a day there. That is a shame as Córdoba’s charm is worth spending more than a few hours. I recommend spending a night, even two.
And every May, when the city hosts its splendid La Fiesta de Los Patios, the best of Spain in terms of Spanish festivals , spend several days exploring the city and the patios!
Córdoba Highlights
Córdoba’s centerpiece is its Mezquita Mayor (mosque), which is also its cathedral. After the Catholics conquered Córdoba, they build their holy site right on top of the Moors’. Famous for its bright orange and white arches, and other staples of Islamic architecture, the alter right in the middle looks so out of place.
You can also climb the bell tower for an amazing view of Córdoba, but you need to get your tickets in the morning the day you want to go up.
Famous for its Judería, Córdoba has one of the best-preserved old Jewish quarters in Spain. It is possible visit to the old synagogue. You can even sample Sephardic food at Casa Mazal in Plaza Maimónides, where there is a statue honoring the famous Jewish philosopher, the namesake of the plaza.
Though not as impressive as the Alcázar in Seville, the gardens in Córdoba’s Alcázar should be on the list of any garden lover to visit.
From the city, you can take a day trip to Medina Azahara, the ruins of a fortified Anadluz palace city.
Córdoba Less Traveled
Some of Córdoba’s best patios can be visited year-round (outside of the dates of la Fiesta de los Patios). Palacio de Viana has many patios and gardens. Also open year-round is the Trueque Cuatro, with its typical Cordobés patio.
At Caballerizas Reales, just a little down the way from the Alcázar, you can catch an authentic Andaluz horse show.
And for an off the beaten path day trip from Córdoba, the town of Zuheros, the center of Córdoba province’s cheese and olive industry, is a hidden gem. White-washed streets and an imposing castle, this town sees very few travelers from abroad. On the way, stop at Finca Duernas, where you can see how olive oil is made and yes, even taste it.
Need even more reasons to visit Córdoba? Here are my top picks of things to do in Cordoba Spain !
So there you have it: the best of Spain for your Spain travel itinerary. Some of Spain’s most popular sites with visitors.
There is not a one size fits all answer to travel and itinerary planning. And of course, there are so many other beautiful places to explore in Spain.

Sagrada Familia & Best of Gaudi
Your private guide will pick you up at your hotel in the morning and take you on a guided tour through the works of Barcelona’s most famous architect, Antoni Gaudí.
Gaudí’s structures, designed in pioneering Catalan modernist architecture, are at once completely singular and unique, yet perfectly at home within the wider cityscape, because they so effectively embody the spirit of Barcelona and reflect the city’s unique personality onto both the interior and exterior of the buildings.
Your architectural tour begins on Paseo de Gracia avenue, where Gaudi’s buildings sit alongside some of the city’s most luxurious stores and apartments.
Casa Batlló
Or Casa de las Osses (House of Bones), as it is called by the locals, has an architectural skeleton where it is almost impossible to find a straight edge in the building! Step beyond the crowds outside with your guide as they take you through the interior and visit the Gaudi museum located inside Casa Batllo.
Also known as La Pedrera or stone quarry. After viewing the sealife-themed exterior your guide will take you to explore the art exhibitions inside.
Perhaps the best site to see how Gaudi played with color and forms, this park located on Mount Carmelo was conceived as a resort for Barcelona’s elite, and Gaudi was given free rein by Eusebi Guell, under whose commission the artist was enabled to let his imagination run wild.
Your architectural tour of Barcelona concludes with Gaudi’s most essential work, the Sacred Family Cathedral, known as La Sagrada Família in Spanish. Beginning with your private guide providing an overview of the grand scale of the exterior, you’ll be awed by the sheer size and attention to detail of this enormous building. Inside, your guide will explain how the intricate columns, altars, and stained glass create a kaleidoscope of light that reveal Biblical tales and make it clear why Gaudi has become known as “God’s Architect”.
For your first evening on our 7-day itinerary, we recommend strolling down Barcelona’s busy boulevards sampling Catalan-style tapas in the many bars and restaurants before returning to your accommodation refreshed and prepared for your day trip the next morning…
Day 2: Montserrat Mountain & Wine Tasting Day Trip
From the bustling urban hub of Barcelona, your second day in Spain takes you in a completely different direction as you travel a remote Mountain pilgrimage route in Montserrat and then bliss out on a well-deserved wine-tasting experience in the region.
You will be delivered door to door from your Barcelona accommodation to the start of the monastery trail in style and comfort with your private driver and our executive class vehicle.
Montserrat Mountains, Monastery & Black Madonna Shrine
We offer tours to the Montserrat mountain range which includes hiking up to the top of the mountain where you can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view across the range and all the way to Barcelona. You can choose from various activities including walking, biking, horse riding, kayaking, etc. depending on your preferences.
The Santa María Benedictine Monastery located at the summit of the mountain is a highlight for many guests on their 7-day Spain itinerary. If you would prefer to avoid the trekking path to the monastery then there is the option to take the gondola lift up the mountain.
Inside the monastery, your guide will take you to peer over the main altarpiece to reveal the Black Madonna shrine: La Moreneta, which Christians consider to be carved by Saint Luke in Jerusalem at the time the faith was first established.
Penedès Cava Wine Experience
Now on your Montserrat day trip, your private driver will take you to the winery where Cava sparkling wines are made.
While the winegrowing district here is well-renowned for its production of fine white wines, this tour focuses on the specialty of the Penedes: Cava. The word Cava is Spanish for “sparkling wine” made according to the French Champagne method.
During your stay, we invite you on a guided tour of the wine cellars, vineyards, and gardens where you can taste five varieties of the internationally renowned wine. In addition, the winemaker who will curate this section of your tour will discuss the area’s agricultural traditions and the grape growing process so you leave with a greater appreciation of the process and the produce.
After a full day of sightseeing, your private driver-guide returns you to your hotel in Barcelona for the night.
Day 3: Walking Tour of Barcelona Old Town
On your final day in the city, your guide will take you to the city’s historic Gothic quarter as they bring to life the stories and legends that contributed to Barcelona evolving into the globally significant, vibrant, and thriving cultural hub it is today, while you visit the very sites and locations that played an integral role in its rise.
Highlights include:
- Private tour of Barcelona Cathedral with crypts, tombs, and Cathedral Museum
- Placa del Rei medieval buildings and imposing spire
- The Picasso Museum which is housed in several Catalan Gothic-style palaces
- Museu Frederic Marès with its collection of religious art
In the evening discover the flavor of Barcelona as your guide takes you down La Rambla boulevard to sample delicious tapas treats.
Day 4: Flight from Barcelona to Madrid
We can arrange for your trip to Madrid either by air (1 hour 20 minutes) or by high-speed rail (2 hours 45 minutes).
Explore The City Center of Madrid With Your Guide

A visit to Toledo is certainly one of the best ways to experience traditional Spanish culture.
A short one-hour drive away from Madrid lies its historic center which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through the city’s narrow cobblestone lanes with your personal guide is the best means of discovering the history behind the Spanish culture and finding out why Toledo was once selected as the Capital of Spain.
Known as the “Ciudad de Tres Culturas” (the “City of Three Cultures”), Toledo wears cultural and architectural influences from Jewish, Moorish, and Christian civilizations on its sleeve.
Toledo has retained much of its original beauty due to its historic center, including the magnificent Cathedral Metropolitana, Palacio del Marqués del San Juan y Navas (the palace of the Marquis of San Juan), and the Casa de Los Tiros, one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic art in Europe. You’ll also be able to examine the paintings of Greek painter Domenico Theotocopulos, better known by his Latinized name “El Greco.”
Your driver-guide will return you to your central Madrid accommodation in the late afternoon.
Day 6: Day Trip To Segovia With Driver & Guide
Just over an hour’s drive from Madrid, your driver guide will deliver you to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Segovia. A must for history lovers, visiting Segovia and its wonderful landscapes, castles, and historic quarters is truly like stepping into a fairy tale.
We do mean that quite literally, the iconic castle so familiar to us all as the Disney Castle is said to be inspired by the Alcázar de Segovia. On your private tour of the Alcazar you will explore:
- The Tower of John II of Castile
- The Throne Room
- Royal Chamber
- Hall of Kings
- Museum of the Royal College of Artillery
After your private tour of the Alcazar in the morning, your guide will take you to The Roman Aqueduct which dates back to the first century and was continually in use right up to 1973!
Before departing for Madrid in the evening you will enjoy an expert-guided city walking tour to remember and a reservation in an authentic Castilian restaurant.
Day 7: Exclusive Madrid Tour & Flight Home
On your final day of our 7-day Spain itinerary, we will provide a luxury vehicle for your transfer to the airport, however, depending on what time your flight is, we could still be able to provide you with one final exclusive experience in Madrid!

Highlights of Spain | Views, Tours & Sights to See by Region
From folk music and flamenco dancing in Andalusia to pintxos and wine in the Basque Country, Spain offers a lifetime’s worth of adventures. While there are an overwhelming number of sights to see, we have narrowed down the highlights of Spain for you to choose from the best.
Each region is impressively unique while still carrying a unifying thread of a passion for good food and human connection. Read on as we celebrate these admirable traits.
Top Places to Visit in Spain by Region
Visit the best regions in Spain on a personalized luxury tour or start planning your own trip. Many of the bucket list Spanish sights fit into a well-planned itinerary. Choose your favorites from the list below:
Galicia makes up the most northwestern region of Spain. Consider visiting the beautiful beaches or, perhaps, set off on foot to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. It may feel as if all roads in Galicia lead to Santiago as it is the endpoint of the Camino pilgrimage routes.
The focal point of cider culture in Spain is in the city of Oviedo. It is the capital of the Asturias and is located in northern Spain. Oviedo is one of the most underrated places in Spain to visit on vacation. Here you can unwind in the city streets or on the beach in the Bay of Biscay.
Quick Tip: Try the local cider poured from a height and sample the delicacy similar to a crepe called frixuelo.
Known as Green Spain, the area between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian mountains is lush with vegetation. Marvel at late stone age artifacts at Cueva El Pendo or visit the Michelin-starred restaurants and contemporary art galleries in the capital city of Santander.
Set off to the picturesque town of Potes to tour the Santo Toribio Monastery and see a piece of the cross upon which Jesus died.
Basque Country
Arriving in northern Spain in the revitalized city of Bilbao, you’ll be swept up in the flavors and sights of the Basque Country. Visit the striking Guggenheim Museum, walk the once industrial city to enjoy pintxos, or peruse the meats and sweets at Europe’s largest indoor market.
San Sebastian is another must-see Basque city offering interesting monuments and incredible beaches.
Navarre is located in northern Spain and was a medieval Basque kingdom. The region experiences a moderate climate favorable for olive oil and wine production. Pamplona, the capital city of Navarre, hosts the bucket-list San Fermin festival, where brave citizens run through the streets ahead of a dozen bulls.
La Rioja is a world-famous wine region In the north of Spain. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate favorable for growing grapes and the local Pimiento Riojano peppers.
Take part in the summer Batalla de Vino where festival-goers walk from the town to the Hermitage of San Felices de Bilibio to attend a mass. After the mass, the battle of wine begins.
Catalonia borders Andorra and is world renown for its gastronomy and architecture. It is home to Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Basilica, which stands confidently as Spain’s most visited attraction. It was designed by architect Antoni Gaudi whose work permeates many of the top attractions in Catalonia, such as Park Guell.
Another notable attraction is the Dali Theater and Museum in Figueres.
Castile and Leon
This landlocked region of Spain borders Portugal and offers ancient monuments, ski resorts, and cities with modern amenities. The Roman aqueducts in Segovia, the 12th-century university in Salamanca, and the walled city of Avila are all worth visiting.
Aragon in the northeast of Spain has some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees Mountains and is known for its cities with Moorish-influenced Mudéjar architecture . It is a varied region with the must-see Romanesque church in Huesca, the 12th-century Cathedral in Teruel, and the French-gothic Cathedral in Tarazona.
This region in central Spain has a capital city by the same name. Madrid’s main attractions include the Reina Sofia National Art Museum and the Royal Palace in the nearby city of Aranjuez. Revel in the nightlife and flamenco performances in the capital, or head out on a day trip to a fabulous monastery in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Castilla-La Mancha
Castilla-La Mancha’s capital city of Toledo is known as the city of three civilizations and is a protected World Heritage Site. Set off on a day trip to see El Greco artworks, learn about the city’s history, and take in the views from Mirador del Valle looking over the Tajo River.
Extremadura
This western region of Spain is an important area for wildlife and has a rugged atmosphere. You’ll notice some of the landscapes and castles around the capital city Mérida in the Game of Thrones series. The ancient cities are jaw-dropping to explore, with the still-used Teatro Romano in Badajoz and the 13th-century Trujillo Castle in Cáceres standing out.
This southern region of Spain has a Moorish influence on its food and architecture. The port city of Malaga’s food, Granada’s beautiful Alhambra Palace , and Seville’s bitter oranges and large gothic cathedral are all Andalusian treasures worth experiencing.
Located on Spain’s southeastern coast, Valencia is both the region’s name and its capital city. The two-thousand-year-old capital is the third-largest city in Spain and offers a variety of attractions, expansive beaches, and a buzzing food scene. While visiting, make sure to taste the sweet Valencian clementine.
Murcia is an agricultural and lively region positioned on Spain’s southeastern coastline. Make sure to see the National Museum of Underwater Archeology in Cartagena. Alternatively, try your hand at watersports in the calm waters of Mar Menor in La Manga.
Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera are the perfect Spanish holiday destinations. The beaches are a big attraction during the hot summers typical of the Mediterranean climate. Explore Palma’s Gothic cathedral, Mahon’s 13th-century church, or settle into Ibiza’s nightlife in San Antonio.
Canary Islands
This Spanish archipelago off the northwestern coast of Africa offers visitors sunny beaches and incredible stars at night. Laze about on beaches in Lanzarote, see dolphins on a boat cruise in Tenerife’s Los Cristianos, or visit the art and sights in the capital city of Las Palmas.

19 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Spain
Written by Michael Law , Lana Law , and Lisa Alexander Updated Aug 31, 2023
Spain is a dream destination for travelers. The grandeur of a caliph's palace, the sun-drenched days spent on Mediterranean beaches, and the stamp of a flamenco dancer's heels. You can find the soul of Spain in tourist experiences like these, which represent the country's rich history, fascinating culture, and enchanting natural beauty.
From the bustling street life of La Rambla in Barcelona and Plaza Mayor in Madrid to the forest of columns and Moorish arches disappearing into the silent expanse of Cordoba's Great Mosque, Spain exudes a vibrant energy and a captivating blend of past and present. And if you get off the main tourist routes and venture into less tourist-oriented towns, you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
Plan your sightseeing and find interesting things to do with our list of the top attractions in Spain.
1. The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, Granada
2. barcelona's sagrada familia and gaudí sites, 3. the great mosque of córdoba (la mezquita), 4. seville cathedral and alcázar, 5. the prado and paseo del artes, madrid, 6. san lorenzo de el escorial, 7. guggenheim museum, bilbao, 8. santiago de compostela cathedral, 9. plaza mayor, madrid, 10. plaza de españa and parque de maría luisa, seville, 11. ciudad de las artes y las ciencias, valencia, 12. beaches of gran canaria, 13. la rambla, barcelona, 14. the costa del sol, 15. el teide, tenerife, 16. toledo's old city, 17. the white towns of andalucía.
No matter how much you have read or how many pictures you have seen of Granada's Alhambra palaces, this Moorish pleasure palace will still take your breath away. The Nasrid dynasty's royal palace is the artistic highlight of Spain's Islamic period, when Al-Andalus - as they called Andalucía - represented the epitome of culture and civilization in medieval Europe.
The Alhambra complex includes several buildings, towers, walls, gardens, and a mosque, but it's the indescribably intricate stone carvings, the delicate filigrees, the magnificent tile-lined ceilings, the graceful arches, and serene courtyards of the Nasrid palace that will haunt your dreams.
That said, the adjoining palace built for the Emperor Charles V, even in its unfinished state is the finest example of High Renaissance architecture in Spain. And Generalife's terraced gardens offer a peaceful respite from the grandeur, and splendid views back at the rest of the Alhambra.
Author's Note: The Alhambra is large, requires a great deal of walking, and takes time to see. Don't plan on a quick visit. Be sure to book tickets well in advance. This is Spain's most visited tourist attraction and tickets sell out weeks in advance during busy times.
Travelers should set aside at least a half day to visit the Alhambra palaces and several days to explore the tourist attractions of Granada . Besides the Alhambra, other highlights of Granada include the UNESCO-listed Albaicín , the medieval Moorish quarter; the 16th-century Capilla Real de Granada (Royal Chapel); and the Sacromonte quarter, where flamenco performances take place in gypsy caves.
Antoni Gaudí took the architectural style known as Art Nouveau a step further, even, some have argued, into absurdity. The fanciful and outrageous buildings he created in Barcelona have become landmarks, the most emblematic tourist attractions of this Catalan city.
Foremost is the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, officially the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família or the Holy Family Church of the Atonement. One of Europe's most unconventional churches, it is also unfinished, so as you look down from its tower, you can see the work in progress below.
You may search in vain for absolute straight lines in Gaudí's Casa Milà , his last and most famous secular work; it resembles a piece of sculpture more than a functional building. Be sure to ascend to its roof – the chimneys are said to have inspired the image of Darth Vader from Star Wars .
The fantastic Casa Batlló, an iconic Gaudí building with mask-shaped balconies and an undulating façade, presents Magic Nights outdoor concerts on the building's rooftop terrace.
Parc Güell overlooks the city from a hillside, the views and gardens framed by fantastical creatures – salamanders, fish, an octopus – and designs in bright ceramic-chard mosaics. A fanciful towered house near the entrance is largely covered with colorful ceramic pieces.
Gaudí's monuments appeal even to children and to adults who don't care a thing about architecture, for one simple reason: they are just plain fun to look at.
Once the principal mosque of western Islam and still known as La Mezquita, Córdoba's Great Mosque is one of the largest in the world and the finest achievement of Moorish architecture in Spain.
In spite of later alterations that carved out its center to build a Catholic cathedral at its heart, the Great Mosque ranks with the Alhambra in Granada as one of the two most splendid examples of Islamic art and architecture in western Europe.
Building materials from Roman and Visigothic buildings were used in the construction, which began in 785, and by 1000, it had grown to its present dimensions, its prayer hall with no fewer than nineteen aisles. No matter where you stand or in which direction you look, its rows of columns and rounded Moorish arches line up in symmetrical patterns.
La Mezquita is found in the city center, close to many major attractions in Cordoba . Stroll down to the Puente Romano (Roman Bridge) and the Puerta del Puente , or find a place to eat along the riverfront.
Some of the other highlights include the flower-bedecked patios in the Judería (old Jewish quarter) near the Great Mosque; the Palacio de Viana , a 15th-century aristocratic palace; and the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos , the former Caliphal Palace that Catholic king Fernando III took over in the 13th century. Narrow, winding streets; small squares; and low whitewashed houses fill the Judería, lending a Moorish atmosphere inherited from its past.
You can't miss the Seville Cathedral. This enormous structure is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and dominates the city center.
The Catedral de Sevilla , the La Giralda tower, and the Alcázar combine to form a UNESCO World Heritage Site . These three exceptional historic landmarks are the top tourist attractions of Seville .
While you can appreciate the cathedral from the outside, you need to step inside and walk beside the massive columns to really get a sense of the size. The Cathedral of Seville has more interior space than St. Peter's in Rome. The 37-meter main altar consists of carved statues completely covered in gold. The monumental tomb of Christopher Columbus is held aloft by a quartet of larger-than-life figures.
A masterpiece of Almohad architecture, La Giralda began life as a minaret and is all that's left of the city's Great Mosque, destroyed to build the cathedral.
The Alcázar opposite the cathedral was begun by the Moors in 712 and redesigned after the Christian Reconquest by Pedro I in ornate Mudéjar style (blending Gothic and Muslim architectural elements). The rooms and salons are breathtaking, with fanciful embellishments such as intricate tiled walls and patterned ceilings.
Shaded by fragrant orange and lemon trees, the dreamy Alcázar gardens were pictured in the Game of Thrones series. Fans of this show may recognize the fountains from the Kingdom of Dorne's Water Gardens.
Bordering the Alcázar on the east is the Barrio de Santa Cruz , the former Judería (Jewish quarter), a neighborhood of whitewashed homes, iron balconies, and flower-filled courtyards.
One of the top tourist attractions in Madrid , the Prado alone ranks with the world's top art museums for the riches of its collections. But add the Reina Sofía National Art Museum , the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, and the CaixaForum , all along Madrid's mile-long, tree-shaded boulevard, and you have what may be the world's highest concentration of priceless art treasures. It's no wonder this is known as El Paseo del Arte, Boulevard of the Arts.
The Prado has the world's largest collection of Spanish art, an impressive continuum from 12th-century medieval works through the avant-garde movement of the early 20th century, and is especially noted for its works from Spain's golden age by El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya.
But its riches are not all Spanish; other highlights are the medieval murals and retablos, paintings by Flemish and Dutch artists (be sure to see the fantasy world of Hieronymus Bosch and works by Rubens and Brueghel), and Italian art (Botticelli, Raphael, Correggio, Titian, and Tintoretto).
Highlights of the Museo Reina Sofía's impressive 20,000-piece collection are Picasso's Guernica and works by Miró, Dalí, Dubuffet, Braque, Serra, Calder, and Magritte.
San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 kilometers northwest of Madrid, was the summer home of Spain's kings, and in 1563, work was begun here on a huge complex, which would include a monastery, church, royal palace, mausoleum, library, and museum, all conceived as a monument to Philip II and his reign.
The result is a staggering collection of attractions, built around 16 courtyards, its rooms and structures connected by 16 kilometers of corridors. At its core is the church, the highlight of which is Herrera's 30-meter-high retablo, made of jasper and red marble and approached by a flight of 17 steps.
Along with the vaulted and frescoed ceilings by Tibaldi in the rooms off the lower cloister, highlights of the monastery are the Panteón de los Reyes (the Baroque burial vault of the Spanish kings) and the library , a grand room also adorned with Tibaldi frescoes .
In the palace, be sure to see the Bourbon Suite, where the state apartments of Charles IV are decorated with rare furnishings and 338 tapestries. Beyond are the art-filled private apartments of Philip II. The Picture Gallery below has a large collection of fine paintings, including works by Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Velázquez, and El Greco.

You really have to see this building to believe it - no photograph has ever done justice to this symphony of shapes, so alive that they seem ready to take wing. American architect Frank Gehry used blocks of limestone and undulating sheets of titanium to turn the notion of modern architecture on its ear.
So thoroughly did he succeed that two new terms were born from it: "The Bilbao Effect" - the ability of a city to turn its fortunes around by constructing a single world-class building - and "architourism," a whole segment of the travel industry revolving around landmarks of contemporary architecture.
Inside the 24,000-square-meter galleries of the museum are temporary exhibitions and rotating displays of its own collections of modern art. Highlights include works by Anselm Kiefer, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol.
Besides the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao has other interesting cultural attractions : the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (Museum of Fine Arts), the Casco Viejo (Old Town), and the gourmet dining scene. Bilbao is renowned for its Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurants, including Nerua in the Guggenheim Museum; Ola Martín Berasategui, which serves contemporary Spanish cuisine based on fresh market ingredients; and Atelier Etxanobe, which offers creative haute cuisine.
The magnificent cathedral of Santiago (St. James) in Santiago de Compostela was built to house and honor the relics of the saint, and it has been the ultimate destination of pilgrims since the Middle Ages. (Today, the historic town of Santiago de Compostela still draws modern-day pilgrims and also is a top travel destination in the Galicia region of Northern Spain ).
One of the outstanding monuments of Early Romanesque architecture, the cathedral was built between 1060 and 1211, and despite the Baroque transformation of the exterior in the 16th to 18th centuries, the interior is still in the purest Early Romanesque style.
You'll see both of these periods at play as you enter the west front, through one of Spain's most impressive church facades. Step inside to face the Pórtico de la Gloria , part of the old west front now concealed by the 18th-century facade. This triple doorway is one of the largest and most magnificent collections of Romanesque sculpture in the world.
The focal point of the interior is the elaborately decorated Capilla Mayor , built over the Apostle's tomb. In the center of the high altar of jasper, alabaster, and silver is a 13th-century wooden figure of the Apostle, richly adorned in precious metals and gems.
On either side, narrow staircases lead up behind the figure so that pilgrims can kiss the Apostle's cloak - culminating their pilgrimage. In a crypt under the altar, the Apostle's remains are in a silver casket.
The throbbing heartbeat of Spain's vibrant capital city, Plaza Mayor has played an important part in Madrid's everyday life since the 16th century, when Philip II entrusted the task of designing it to his favorite architect Juan de Herrera, builder of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Today one of the top cultural attractions of Madrid, the Plaza Mayor has for centuries served as the stage for ceremonial events – the proclamation of a new king, the canonization of saints, the burning of heretics – and public entertainment such as chivalric tournaments and bullfights.
The cafés spilling out onto the plaza's pedestrian-only stone pavement, and the restaurants shaded under its arcades are Madrid's living room, popular meeting places for Madrileños and tourists alike.
As the center of Madrid's social life, the area around the Plaza Mayor is one of the best places to stay in Madrid.
Built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 to celebrate the various regions of Spain, the Plaza de España is an impressive semi-circular pavilion surrounded by colonnades. Beautiful panels of colorful decorative tiles representing each of Spain's provinces are set overlooking the long pool, which is crossed by bridges. It's a popular place to visit for a stroll or to row a rental boat around the pool and under the bridges.
The Plaza de España is the focal point of the vast Parque de María Luisa, a half mile of gardens, lawns, and shaded walks stretching alongside the river opposite central Seville. You can rent a pedal car or ride though in a horse-drawn carriage. Busy any day, on Sundays the park overflows with families.
The best way to see the giant trees, flower beds, pools, gazebos, and the man-made rock mountain with a waterfall is to stroll through the park, following the side paths into hedge-surrounded gardens. At the far end of the park, you'll find a small but rich archeology museum with Visigoth jeweled crosses and ancient gold work.
When Valencia diverted the course of the river that had repeatedly flooded the city, it was left with a broad, flat riverbed spanned by bridges. It was upon this clean palette that the brilliant Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava created a breathtaking ensemble of structures that have become a magnet for aficionados of contemporary architecture.
Not only the buildings, but the museums, arts venues, and aquarium (by Félix Candela and the only building not designed by Calatrava) form a series of tourist attractions in Valencia that rank among Spain's most popular.
Europe's largest oceanographic aquarium, L'Oceanogràfic, was built in the shape of a water lily with buildings dedicated to different aquatic environments from the tropics to the poles.
The largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is best known for the golden-sand beaches that line most of its southern coast. Playa de Las Canteras is in the capital city of Las Palmas, popular with families for its calm waters, protected by a natural breakwater of volcanic rock.
The largest beach, and the liveliest, is the Playa del Inglés at Maspalomas, which abounds with cafés, restaurants, shops, play parks, and other amusements. At one end is one of the archipelago's natural wonders, a vast protected area of gigantic sand dunes. These reach as high as 12 meters and are constantly shifting as they are shaped by the wind and the sea. To complete the desert illusion, you can ride through this desolate and other-worldly landscape on a camel.
The water is relatively warm on this coast, and so clear that it's popular with divers. There's an underwater park at Arinaga and diving schools at Playa del Inglés and several other places along the coast. Or you can see the fish and other sea life from a cruise on a glass-bottomed boat. The south coast is also popular for windsurfing and sailing.

Strolling along La Rambla on a summer evening, you might think that every single one of Barcelona's inhabitants was there with you. It's definitely the place to be after work on a summer evening or on a weekend. This tree-lined boulevard cuts a green line - not a very straight one - through the city center, stretching northwest from the Columbus Memorial near the port.
The section to the Plaça de Catalunya is lined with plane trees, its wide pedestrian zone flanked by a narrow road on each side. Along with its flower and bird markets, La Rambla has a number of book and newspaper stands, as well as restaurants and cafés with open-air tables. Pavement artists, street musicians, living statues, and impromptu performers all add to its lively atmosphere.
One of the highlights of La Rambla is the Mercat de la Boqueria (91 Rambla), a traditional covered marketplace that sells fresh produce, meat, fish, bread, cheese, and other specialty foods. Locals come here to shop for ingredients to prepare home-cooked meals. Tourists will appreciate the chance to sample regional delicacies served at the market's tapas bars.
Long a destination for sun-starved northern Europeans, the Costa del Sol is a seemingly unending stretch of beaches and cities along Spain's southwestern Mediterranean coastline. The summer weather here is exceptional, with long, hot days, and steamy fun-filled nights.
Must-see cities along this stretch include the glitzy and glamourous Marbella with its famous harbor chock full of luxury yachts, and Malaga , with its restored downtown and the stunning Alcazaba perched on the hilltop. If you prefer something a bit smaller, check out the small-town charms of Neerja.
Fun cities aside, it's the beaches that are the major draw here. The soft, golden sand lapped by azure waters makes it almost impossible not to go swimming. In fact, the Costa del Sol is home to many of Spain's best beaches , each with their own special vibe.
One of the highlights of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has many attractions . But El Teide is what makes the island truly special.
The highest peak in Spain, this ancient - but still simmering - volcano is also one of Europe's top natural wonders. The Pico del Teide and the Caldera de las Cañadas, a gigantic volcanic crater, together form the Parque Nacional del Teide , at the center of the island of Tenerife. In listing the park in 2007, UNESCO cited its natural beauty and "its importance in providing evidence of the geological processes that underpin the evolution of oceanic islands."
You can explore El Teide in several ways. You can drive or hike across the inside of the caldera - the crater floor - 12 miles in diameter and a barren moonscape of colored rock formations that's like driving into the center of the earth. You can climb El Teide's cone, but an easier way to get close to the top is by an eight-minute cable car ride . On a clear day, views cover the entire archipelago and can extend to North Africa - the nearest land mass to the Canary Islands.

Toledo is a fantastic city to wander around and get lost in its narrow streets. The layout of the town, with its irregular pattern of streets and numerous blind alleys, reflects its Moorish past, and the architecture of the Christian period is represented by the numerous churches, convents, and hospices. This makes the Casco Histórico (Old Town) a kind of open-air museum, illustrating the history of Spain, and it has been listed by UNESCO as part of mankind's cultural heritage.
Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture mingle and blend into a city that El Greco captured in one of his most famous paintings. High on a granite hill and surrounded on three sides by the deep gorge of the Tagus River, the medieval city of Toledo presents a stunning profile; approaching it from below is an unforgettable sight.
With its richly decorated interior, the splendid Gothic Catedral de Toledo is one of Toledo's top tourist attractions , and the two synagogues in the atmospheric old Judería (Jewish quarter) are ornate in the Moorish style. While in the Judería, be sure to see the church of Santo Tomé for its El Greco masterpiece.
You can easily visit Toledo as a day trip from Madrid (just an hour away by train), but it's also a nice place to spend a night, so you can linger later into the day and soak up the atmosphere in the evening.
Poised like dabs of white frosting atop the steep crags of southern Andalucía, the White Towns (Pueblos Blancos) are not just beautiful, they speak of this region's long and fascinating history. West of Gibraltar, mountains rise straight from the sea, and among them hide these hilltop whitewashed towns.
Most spectacular is Arcos de la Frontera , whose plaza beside the Gothic church ends vertiginously in a 137-meter cliff, affording views across a valley of olive, orange, and almond orchards. Its maze of winding cobbled streets lead past cafes and craft shops selling ceramics and pottery to a Moorish castle.
A total of 19 of these villages of small white houses are in the area around the Grazalema Nature Reserve. Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra are two others worth seeing. A good base in the region is Jerez de la Frontera , home of flamenco and Andalucian thoroughbreds. Watch these horses' precision ballet at the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art, and for authentic flamenco, visit Centro Cultural Flamenco .
One of the most photographed towns is Setenil de las Bodegas , where many of the buildings are built into or beneath the rock walls.

Ibiza is well known the world over as a place to come to have a good time in the sun. Blessed with exceptional beaches and lively towns, the island has been attracting a youthful set for decades. During the day Ibiza's beaches are packed with people enjoying the sun and surf, and at night certain areas are entertainment hotspots where DJs spin the latest tunes.
However, what many people don't know is that Ibiza is also a great place to soak up some history. Take a stroll along the cobblestone streets into the UNESCO-listed old quarter of Dalt Vila where you'll find a surprising number of well-preserved Gothic Catalan buildings. Up above it all is the fortress, offering stunning views.
If you up for a bit of adventure away from the crowds, head to the tranquil coves of Portinatx. Lay your towel out on the soft sand and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The ancient city of Ronda is one of the highlights of a visit to Spain's Andalucia region. Perched impossibly on a rocky outcrop complete with a historical bridge and well-preserved old town, this city just begs to be photographed.
Ronda is exceptionally easy to walk around, many of the major sights are a short stroll from one another including the Puente Nuevo bridge over the 100-meter-deep Tajo de Ronda gorge, the Plazas de Toros bullring, and La Cuidad, the old Moorish town center.
Spend a day wandering the sights and then settling into a prime patio seat on the Plaza del Socorro. Fans of Ernst Hemingway may recognize certain areas from his book For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Vuelta a Espana
Vuelta a Espana coverage from Cycling Weekly, with up to date race results, rider profiles and news and reports.
The Vuelta a España 2024, the 79th edition of the race, will be the final Grand Tour of the season, with the race following the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the WorldTour calendar.
The 2024 race includes just one flat stage, and promises to pack in the climbing, with two short time trials bookending the race, which opens in Lisbon, Portugal on 17 August.
Sepp Kuss, the American cyclist who won the general classification in 2023 , has stated his aim to race again in 2024 , pairing the Spanish stage race with the Tour de France.
Here's all you need to know ahead of the last Grand Tour of the season.
Sepp Kuss: 'I can fight for the Grand Tours. I can be with the best guys'
Vuelta a españa 2024 route: sprinters beware, there is just one flat stage.
Vuelta a España 2024: Overview
Vuelta a españa 2024: the route.
The Vuelta a España 2024 route brings the mountains to centre stage once again. The first stage in Lisbon and the last stage in Madrid will be short individual time trials. Between the two ITTs, there is only one day for the sprinters, which comes early in the race, on day five.
Vuelta a España 2024: Stage-by-stage
Vuelta a españa: the jerseys.
The red jersey of the Vuelta's general classification leader is now well established (it was previously gold, but changed in 2010). The leader of the mountains classification wears a polka-dot jersey, but its large blue spots mean it's very different to the one that riders in the Tour de France wear. The points leader's green jersey is lime green, while the jersey for best young rider (born after 1 January 1998), is white – familiar from the Tour de France.
There are other awards on offer as well, including the teams classification and a daily combativity award. Embellished jersey numbers, rather than jerseys, are on offer for this.
Riders in the general classification in particular will be interested in the bonus seconds that are available throughout the race. There are 10, 6 and 4 seconds for finishing first, second and third on a stage, plus 3, 2 and 1 seconds at nine different intermediate sprints throughout the race and 10 separate bonus uphill sprints.
Vuelta a España 2024: The teams
There will be 22 teams riding the 2024 Vuelta a España, including all 18 WorldTour teams and four second-tier ProTeams. Full details are yet to be confirmed.

Neither the Angliru nor the Pyrenees are included in the 2024 but there are plenty of other mountain finishes, including the ascents of the steep Cuitu Negru and return to Lagos de Covadonga.
They will ensure that another mountain specialist will follow on from America's Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) as the overall winner.

Sport Tour de France stage six won by Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen in Dijon after a photo finish
Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen could not celebrate on the finish line and had to wait for a photo finish to confirm he had won Stage 6 of the Tour de France.
Groenewegen won by centimetres from Jasper Phillipsen, who was relegated for an illegal sprint.
What's next?
The fight for the yellow jersey will resume on stage seven with the first time trial.
Dutch champion Dylan Groenewegen won the sixth stage of the Tour de France after a mass sprint that was decided in a photo finish.
Tadej Pogacar kept the yellow jersey after a nervous day on the bike amid crosswinds.
Groenewegen earned a sixth career stage victory at cycling's biggest race ahead of Biniam Girmay, the Stage 3 winner, and Fernando Gaviria, the Stage 3 runner-up. Jasper Philipsen was initially the runner-up for a second straight stage but was relegated for an irregular sprint.
“I actually don’t know what happened but I was first,” Groenewegen said.
There was no change among the overall leaders, with Pogacar staying 45 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel.
Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard remained in third place, 50 seconds off the pace.
After Matthieu Van der Poel opened the sprint in the city of Dijon with an excellent lead-out for his teammate Philipsen, Groenewegen timed his effort perfectly and used his great power to prevail by just a few centimetres.
The fight between the main contenders for the yellow jersey is expected to resume on Friday during the race's first time trial.
The 25-kilometre race against the clock features a climb with an average gradient of 6.1 per cent that will put riders to the test in the final section.
Thursday's relatively short stage of 163.5 kilometres started from Macon, taking the peloton through the Burgundy vineyards. Early into the stage, riders rode past a giant drawing of France striker Antoine Griezmann, who was born in Macon.
Jonas Abrahamsen ignited the first move of the day to claim points in the classification for the polka-dot jersey of best climber, at the top of a short climb and went on a breakaway with Axel Zingle. The duo was caught soon after.
On long sections of roads exposed to wind, the peloton rode at a steady pace, with riders careful not to get caught in a split.
About 85 kilometres from the finish, Vingegaard's teammates Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte moved to the front to speed up the pace and harden the race.
The peloton lined out and split in two but all the main contenders managed to stay in the first group, although Pogacar found himself isolated.
It was just a scare for the UAE Team Emirates leader as the second group with his teammates managed to bridge the gap in the end.
The sprinters' teams took control with 4 kilometres left as the fastest men of the peloton got ready for their final, brutal effort.
Groenewegen was not immediately sure he won and waited to be 100 per cent sure before he let his joy explode with staff members of the Team Jayco AlUla.
"It was so close I couldn’t celebrate on the finish line," Groenewegen said. "In the end, we grabbed it."

The first time trial showdown of the Tour de France lived up to the billing as the top GC contenders all put in a strong performance.
Time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel set the top mark despite having a mechanical scare in the final moments of the TT, while Tadej Pogačar limited the bleeding to 12 seconds to retain the yellow jersey. Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard held their own at 34 and 37 seconds back respectively.
