Drive-By Truckers to Journey Through the Past, Playing ‘Southern Rock Opera’ on Tour

More than two decades since its release, Drive-By Truckers ‘ Southern Rock Opera album will get its full due when the band performs the 94-minute double-album in its entirety on an extensive U.S. tour. The Truckers also promise to play fan favorites and deep cuts from throughout their career.

Tickets for the tour, which kicks off in June, officially go on sale March 29 at 10 a.m. local time. Full ticketing information is on the band’s website . Fans can also request tickets early via Ticketmaster.

“A lot has happened in the decades since it came out, both to the band and to the world we live in,” the band’s Patterson Hood said in a statement. “We feel that the record, while somewhat timeless, also has a current timeliness to it considering the social and political issues of today. Instead of performing it as if it’s still 2000AD, we want to make it our own, reflecting who we all are now in 2024. It’s going to be intense, but also a hell of a lot of fun.”

Although Southern Rock Opera was not the Truckers’ commercial breakthrough – that came a couple of years later with The Dirty South – it became a critical success despite coming out on Sept. 12, 2001. In addition to releasing in the wake of a national tragedy, the album suffered from poor distribution and the band had to re-release it in 2002.

“It’s been overwhelming to me,” Hood told Rolling Stone in 2002 of the reception the album got. “The whole time we were working on it, which dates back six years, everybody told us we were crazy and it was a stupid idea. We were told a thousand reasons why it wouldn’t work, everybody from some friends all the way to anybody even slightly connected to the music industry. But we’ve always gone against what people thought was the smart thing to do.”

We have two styles of carts. We have carts that carry 5 passengers and 7 passengers. If you have a larger group, we will take multiple carts.

Unfortunately, no. That is out of our service area as directed by the city of Nashville. However Opryland offers a shuttle into downtown and we are usually able to pick you up at the shuttle stop.

In general, yes. However, in some circumstances we may need to change your tour time. We try to limit this as we know your time is valuable and there are lots of things you want to do while in Nashville!

No, children 4 and under are not permitted under city regulations. Children 5-8 must be in a booster or car seat. Joyride can provide booster seats at special request.

Drive-By Truckers Announce Spring U.S. Tour with Special Guests

Drive-By Truckers announced U.S. spring tour dates along with their roster of features. The tour will kick off on March 9 at The Vogue in Indianapolis before the band makes their way down to the south and up to the East Coast over the course of three months ending with two nights at the Orange Peel in Asheville, N.C. from May 12-13. 

The guests accompanying Drive-By Truckers will include Margo Cilker for most of the beginning March dates, followed by a couple of single-date features by Model Citizen, Hayride, Camp Amped and Mercyland, and Wednesday until late April when Lydia Loveless joins the stage to help DBT finish out the tour.

Within the lengthy tour shows worth showcasing are Drive-By Truckers’ annual Heathen’s Homecoming mini-fest at the infamous 40 Watt in Athens, Ga., from March 29 to April 1, two nights at the Hall River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, N.C. on April 25-26, Washington DC’s 9:30 Club from April 19-20 and two nights at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom from May 4-5. 

Following the end of the tour, Drive-By Truckers will accompany Tyler Childers as openers for a sold-out show at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on August 11th as part of the “Send In The Hounds Tour.”

Southern Africa Encompassed: Bush Camps & Wildlife Spotting

Outstanding and great organized trip led by professionals who also know how to spoil your tummies. 15 days full of highlights: Rhino sanctuary visit, bush camp overnight in Okavango, enjoying the traditional music and dances of the locals. The flight over the delta is absolutely spectacular and a must, spotting wildlife from the air. Chobe river sunset cruise with tons of animals around the water and a safari in the early morning spotting 13 lions eating a baby elephant for breakfast. Visited the majestic Victoria falls and we stand right next to 4 wild rhinos in Matobo NP...and I really mean standing as we were led by the rhino whisperer himself!! Plus the enormous Kruger Park in the end with offering the most spectacular storm I've seen in my life. Africa is just magical!!

Great tour, well organised, very knowledgeable and friendly guide. 2 suggestions: - please add safari pass amount to overall tour fee and make payable upfront. It’s safer not to carry lots of cash. Also guide does not need all this cash as most fees can be paid by credit card. - tipping is expected on most activities. It’s often difficult to figure out the right amount even with the help of the guide. Suggest to make the guide tip on behalf of the group taking the money from the safari pass or ask everybody to pay a small amount upfront (e.g. USD 10) to the guide.

The Grand Southern Safari

The itenerary was not always followed. The most egregious problem was staying 250 km (3 hrs.) on an extremely rough road from the gate of sossusvlei (dunes). It also made the day before about 150 km longer and the day after 100km longer. Neither accommodation listed on the itinerary was used. We also didn't get a half day in the delta that was on the itinerary. I will send a more detailed evaluation to trip advisor when we finish our trip.

The Southern Safari

This was the first African trip my wife and I have done, and what an incredible trip it was! The organisation of absolute africa was fantastic and we enjoyed every single day with no booking issues at all. An extremely exciting tour my favorite one of all so far, we got to see new and exciting things EVERY DAY. The tour guide and driver were first class, very helpful and supportive throughout the whole trip, and the whole group became like family by the end of the tour. I urge everyone to try it, is a life changing experience. And compared to the other companies out there that we crossed paths with, I was glad we choose absolute africa. 5 stars. Philip

Nairobi To Cape Town (56 Days) Coast To Coast

Great value trip from Nairobi to Cape Town. Well laid out truck (bench seat face-to-face style, rather than coach style seats). Plenty of storage space. Good itinerary, including via Zimbabwe rather than most companies which go via Zambia. Good choice of excursions. Let down by weak tour leadership (friendly enough, but poor organisation) and too much group drinking sessions (including tour leader), but this may have just been this particular group (who otherwise were great company and made good friendships post-trip). Overall though, definitely recommended.

Morocco All Aspects Tour

I loved this tour! No one else was on the tour with me so I had a private tour which meant that we were able to be a bit more flexible with everything. Beautiful scenery along the way and we were able to stop when I saw a great photo opportunity. I saw a little bit of everything. I said from the start I would like to see more of the local aspects with local food. So we were stopping at small restaurants/diners along the way which served some amazing food and cheaper too. Everyone was so friendly and having Hali as my driver and translator really helped. He was great. Loved my tour of Fez with Sayeed! We detoured a little and got to see Argon oil being made, and saw where the rose oil comes from. Pity it was the wrong time of year to see the roses in bloom and see it being made. Would I recommend this tour? Yes.

Dennoch sind die Fahrtzeiten logischerweise recht lang, es lohnt sich jedoch jeden Tag wieder! Ich habe so tolle Leute kennengelernt, einige fürs Leben. Meine Gruppe und die Guides waren hervorragend. Ich würde diese Reise jedem empfehlen.

C HARLOTTE, N.C. - After years of working out of the same no-frills equipment truck, Cobra Tour tech James Posey had to get accustomed to new digs this week at the Wells Fargo Championship. Not that he’s complaining.

Cobra’s glistening new Tour truck houses a multitude of club-building tools, gear and snacks - along with several prime hangout spaces when players need to take a break from practice. Think of it as a home away from home during the Tour season.

With nearly four times the space, Posey and Tour rep Ben Schomin can knock out any project for Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland or Justin Suh and never feel cramped.

“Space was the biggest change,” Posey told GOLF.com. “The ease of setup is something you also take into account. Even though this truck is bigger, I can go from start to finish in about 20 minutes. We accomplished the goal of ease of setup, which was important.

“There’s a wow factor for sure. After staring at it on paper and computer screens for the last two years, it was cool to see it in front of you.”

Bora Bora Island Tour by “Le Truck”

Port: Bora Bora, Society Islands Duration: 2.5 Hours

Explore the island paradise of Bora Bora during this scenic orientation tour via Le Truck. Depart the pier aboard a Le Truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa’anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa’anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia. Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa’anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna’s to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. You will also have an opportunity to buy some local, hand-painted pareus. From a lookout point, you will see Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora’s highest peak, which stands as a silent sentinel over the Pearl of the Pacific. You will then pass by Bora Bora’s Club Med Village before reaching sandy Matira Beach. A stop will be made here to take in splendid vistas and photo opportunities before driving back to Vaitape. On occasion, an air-conditioned bus may replace Le Truck.

The Peach Truck Tour Announces 2024 Pittsburgh-Area Stops

It’s never too early to start thinking about peaches!

The Peach Truck, a traveling food truck that delivers farm-fresh peaches from Georgia, is back for another season of tour stops – and they’re coming to tons locations near Pittsburgh all throughout the summer.

On their website , The Peach Truck shares that the business partners directly with hometown farms to “pick fresh produce at the perfect time, then get them into your hands within hours, not weeks.”

The idea for the business began in the summer of 2010 when Stephen Rose, a Georgia native, moved to Nashville and was dismayed to find that no one was selling fresh, flavorful peaches like the kind he’d grown up with in Georgia.

In the summer of 2012, Stephen and his wife Jessica bought a ‘64 Jeep truck and started selling fresh Georgia peaches from the cab. Within five weeks, the city had consumed over 10 tons of brown-bagged peaches. Today, the business offers mail-order peaches throughout the summer and peach truck tours throughout the United States.

Since then, the business has exploded.

Pre-orders for the tour are now available, and the tour will be making dozens of stops at more than 30 locations near Pittsburgh throughout the summer.

Jimmy Dunne resigns from PGA Tour board. He feels his input is no longer needed

Jimmy Dunne, one of the architects behind the PGA Tour’s stunning reversal to strike a deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, abruptly resigned Monday from the PGA Tour board with a letter that expressed frustration at the lack of progress that no longer included his input.

Dunne, a power broker on Wall Street and in golf circles, was not included on the PGA Tour Enterprise’s new “transaction subcommittee” that will be handling the direct negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

Dunne and Ed Herlihy, an attorney specializing in mergers and acquisition and chairman of PGA Tour Inc., were whom PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan leaned on when he first met with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor, that led to the June 6 agreement .

The immediate result of the deal was an end to antitrust lawsuits neither side wanted and had already cost the PGA Tour in the neighborhood of $50 million. The tour has since brought on Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor in a deal initially worth $1.5 billion.

“As you are aware, I have not been asked to take part in negotiations with the PIF since June 2023,” Dunne said in his letter to the board first obtained by Sports Illustrated .

“Since the players now outnumber the independent directors on the board, and no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my vote and my role is utterly superfluous,” he wrote.

The tour, feeling pushback and resentment for the secrecy behind the June 6 deal, appointed Tiger Woods to the board with no term limit. The board now has six player directors — Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — and five independent directors.

Dunne is the second independent director to resign following the June 6 announcement. Randall Stephenson, former AT&T chairman, resigned in July over objections to the agreement with the Saudis.

McIlroy resigned from the board in November, and player directors appointed Spieth to finish his term.

The move signals the tour in a state of disarray as it tries to work out a deal with PIF and start the process of unifying a sport that has been divided since LIV launched in June 2022.

The June 6 agreement included a deadline to complete a deal by the end of 2023. By then, the tour had private equity suitors and LIV Golf signed reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm and eventually Tyrrell Hatton.

Dunne said along with the lawsuits being dismissed — often overlooked as a key point in the agreement with PIF — the agreement did not contain an exclusivity clause that allowed players “a full range of options to seek outside investors.”

“That resulted in a multi-billion-dollar commitment from the Strategic Sports Group,” Dunne wrote. “I believe that history will look favorably on this outcome and the very real opportunities now afforded the tour.”

Monahan and the player directors eventually met with Al-Rumayyan for the first time in March, though there has been no clear progress on any deal — PIF as a minority investor or how to bring back the best players together more than four times a year at the majors.

Simpson, meanwhile, offered to resign from the board contingent on McIlroy replacing him. That never happened, with McIlroy saying last week “there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

Instead, McIlroy was added to the transaction subcommittee along with Woods; Scott; Monahan; liaison director Joe Ogilvie; Joe Gorder, the CEO of Valero Energy Corp. and chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises; and John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group, a principal in SSG.

“It is crucial for the board to avoid letting yesterday’s differences interfere with today’s decisions, especially when they influence future opportunities for the tour,” Dunne wrote. “Unifying professional golf is paramount to restoring fan interest and repairing wounds left from a fractured game. I have tried my best to move all minds in that direction.”

According to the tour’s bylaws, the four independent directors choose Dunne’s replace after consulting the player directors and John Lindert, the PGA of America president who is a nonvoting board member.

Grandview-based charity recovers stolen truck following anonymous tip

GRANDVIEW, Mo. (KCTV) - A Grandview-based nonprofit has recovered its stolen vehicle after it was stolen last week.

Flourish, a nonprofit furniture bank based in Grandview, had its delivery truck stolen late Friday night.

With the help of an anonymous tipster to the Crime Stoppers Hotline, the truck was located on Monday. It was found several miles north in Kansas City, Mo., and had internal damage. The damage is currently being assessed, Flourish said in a release shared Monday night.

“Flourish staff and volunteers thank the public for their outpouring of support,” Flourish said.

As the nonprofit waits to regain the use of their vehicle, it said it will continue working with local partners to pick up furniture donations around the metro.

A Missouri man who crashed a rental truck into White House barriers and showed a Nazi flag before his arrest last year pleaded guilty on Monday to damaging government property, court records show.

Sai Varshith Kandula, 20, drove a U-Haul truck onto a sidewalk, sending pedestrians running for safety, before ramming it into metal bollard barriers near White House grounds. He nearly struck two people who were standing next to a park bench, but nobody was injured.

Kandula faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of depredation of government property. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich is scheduled to sentence him on Aug. 23.

Prosecutors agreed to recommend a prison sentence no longer than eight years for Kandula, but the judge isn't bound by that term of his plea agreement.

Kandula, then 19, flew from St. Louis to Washington, D.C., and rented the truck in Herndon, Virginia, before crashing it into the barriers on May 22, 2023. After Kandula backed up and slammed into the bollards a second time, the disabled truck began smoking from its engine compartment and leaking fluids.

Kandula was arrested after he exited the truck and retrieved a flag bearing a Nazi swastika from his backpack. Authorities didn't find any weapons, ammunition or explosives in his possession.

Kandula told Secret Service agents that his goal was to “get to the White House, seize power and be put in charge of the nation,” according to prosecutors.

“When agents asked how (Kandula) would seize power, he stated he would ‘Kill the President if that’s what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way,’” prosecutors wrote .

Kandula, who is from the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, Missouri, said he bought the flag online because he admires Adolf Hitler and the Nazis’ “great history," according to prosecutors.

Defense attorney Scott Rosenblum said Kandula is taking medication to treat schizophrenia. Rosenblum said he expects to have a medical specialist address the court at Kandula's sentencing.

The “Harry Potter” franchise was still going strong. Kesha was at the top of the charts. Barack Obama was several months into his presidency. 

And entering 2010, Rory McIlroy , now 25-time PGA Tour winner, was sitting at zero Tour wins — until he broke through in May of that year at what is now known as the Wells Fargo Championship.

So yeah, he said Saturday, the 14-year span kinda felt longer than that. The thought made him reflective Saturday night after his third round at this year’s event, where he was a stroke out of the lead entering Sunday’s final round . 

“Billy Mayfair was leading going into the final round,” McIlroy said “I played with Scott McCarron on this Saturday pretty early. Obviously played with A.K. [ Anthony Kim ] on Sunday, Phil [Mickelson] was up there, [Angel] Cabrera was up there. Yeah, lifetime ago.”

Then there’s this nugget:

McIlroy’s winner share in 2010 was $1.17 million. Should he win this year, he’ll bring home $3.6 mill.
