How to Tour the Stahl House in Los Angeles

Kate Ferguson

  • February 19, 2024

After years of dreaming about it, my tour of the Stahl House in Los Angeles was everything I could have hoped for. The famous midcentury home is located in the Hollywood Hills where it’s been enjoying a beautiful and expansive 270-degree view of the city since it was built in 1959.

The Stahl House was built for expansiveness and undisturbed indoor/outdoor living. There is a lightness to everything about the property, from the sun-glistening pool on the edge of the hill to the minimalistic build of the 2,200-square-foot house that wraps around it.

The Stahl House view

For how much of the home is open with floor-to-ceiling glass and large sliding glass doors, the property feels extremely private. The backside of the house is quietly set off the street behind a wall, with its inside belly fully flung wide open to Los Angeles.

The home has held icon status since it was photographed by Julius Schulman in 1960. Its uniqueness completely changed the way the era approached design, but it was not always expected to be such a hit.

Table of Contents

  • The Stahl House is located at 1635 Woods Drive, Los Angeles CA
  • The cost to enter for daytime tours is $60 for an individual or $35 per person for multiples who arrive in the same car. The evening tours are $90 for an individual or $50 a person if you arrive in the same car.
  • Parking at the property is limited (hence the necessity to carpool if you’re coming with a group), and no walk-ups are allowed. (Even with a reservation.)
  • The tours are kept small and are about an hour long.

How the Stahl House came to be

The concept of the home was originally dreamt up by Buck and Carlotta Stahl in the 1950s. They wanted to live in a house that did justice to the views from their Hollywood Hills plot of land. And that they did—but not without some effort.

The plot of land itself was considered a precarious spot, being right on the edge of the hill. But they had big ideas for the property and paid $13,500.00 for it on a handshake deal.

The bedrooms at the Stahl House

In addition to the location posing some challenges, building a home with floor-to-ceiling glass windows was considered a crazy idea at the time. It was considered so off-the-wall that they had a hard time finding an architect who would even take on the project.

It was Pierre Koenig who ultimately signed on to bring this revolutionary piece of architectural art to life. Construction on the home started in 1959 and took just a year to build.

The Case Study Program

The project was added to the Case Study program before the build was even finished. This gave its second name, Case Study House #22 .

The Case Study Program was intended to showcase how affordable homes could be built with readily available materials post-war. Ie, glass, and steel. This is the aesthetic that came to be instantly recognizable as decidedly mid-century modern.

The Stahl House pool

Huge architects were commissioned to design the experimental homes between 1945 and 1966, which in addition to Pierre Koenig included Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Craig Ellwood, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, A. Quincy Jones, Edward Killingsworth, and Ralph Rapson. Most of them are located in Los Angeles, but one is in San Rafael, California and one is in Phoenix, Arizona.

The program had big dreams but it ended up starting and ending with just some of the designs being made into homes. (An organization called Lost Moderns hopes to one day finish them.) As it turned out, those “affordable” builds weren’t quite as affordable as they were expected to be.

Of the ones that were, the Stahl House is the only one that is open to the public. (With a ticket and reservation.) While the Stahl House is still privately owned by the children of Buck and Carlotta Stahl, it’s not occupied by them. They grew up there and decided that they’d rather not continue to occupy the space. Lucky for us!

The Stahl children have been offered as much as $15 million to sell the home in modern times. They decline, wanting to keep ownership of the home and making it available to public tours.

How to tour the Stahl House

Tours of the Stahl House are available on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and two Fridays each month. There are three time slots available each day.

You can book a tour directly on their website.

They generally open the calendar the month prior and the timeslots do book out quickly. The evening tours are known to book out within minutes. If you’re very serious about going in the evening you might want to email them and ask exactly when the next round will go on sale.

Touring the Stahl House from the waiting list:

It is possible to get a tour ticket by joining the waitlist. Plans change and people drop out, especially since the tours are booked so far in advance.

My visit to the Stahl House

As I visited in quarantine we were welcomed onto the property but only allowed to go into the house to use the restroom. However, this hardly matters as the entire slim wrapping house is open to the air with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Seriously, it’s completely open. There’s not even a hallway in the house. Traveling between bedrooms or from bedroom to kitchen either requires stepping from one room into the next, or stepping outside and then back into the house via giant sliding glass doors.

Inside the master bedroom of the Stahl House

There are a lot of interesting things to learn on the tour about the actual architecture itself. (Like how it exists with a completely flat roof.) But perhaps most notable are those views.

Standing in the backyard next to the pool it’s easy to see from the Griffith Observatory, over Sunset Blvd, and to Century City . The view was stunning in the midday light and is probably even more so at sunset or sunrise with the lights twinkling out across the city.

Things to know before visiting

  • You are not allowed to walk up the street to the Stahl House, even if you have a reservation. You must park at the actual house. (This is to avoid bothering the neighbors.)
  • When you are touring the Stahl House you are not allowed to bring in any type of professional camera. (I shot all of these images on my iPhone.)

Interesting things about the house

Over the years the home has been rented out for shoots and featured in tons of movies, music videos, and even a video game . In brief: Corinna, Corinna,   Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Galaxy Quest, Nurse Betty, The Simpsons, and even Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The fireplace in the Stahl House

The Stahl House was named a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1999, and it was named one of the top 150 structures on the American Institute of Architects’ “America’s Favorite Architecture” list.

It’s one of mine, too!

The Pacific Palisades Eames House is also known as Case Study House No. 8. The property is open for tours on Monday and Thursday-Saturday of each week. They have one to three tour times each of those days, which include both guided and personal exterior tours. As of writing their interior tours are closed.

Faqs about touring the stahl house in los angeles.

Technically you can drive to the Stahl house. But if you show up without a reservation you would be able to see anything. The home is on a private street behind a wall.

The Stahl house is privately owned by the Stahl family. When the children inherited the house they decided to open it up the the public rather than live there. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Stahl house is open to the public through docent-led private tours, which are held a few days a week. You must book a reservation in advance.

LA’s Stahl House: Mid-century Modern Masterpiece in the Hollywood Hills

At first glance, the Stahl House appears to be a place that doesn’t draw attention to itself. Perched near the top of a winding street in the Hollywood Hills, it sits quietly among its neighbors, off the beaten path of typical Los Angeles tourist attractions. But just beyond the home’s carport is a clue on the front door that gives away its identity: C.S.H. #22.

Case Study House Number 22. From 1945 to the early 1960s, Art & Architecture Magazine commissioned major architects including Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen and Pierre Koenig to design and construct modern single family homes – mostly in Los Angeles – for the emerging baby boomer population. The Stahl House wasn’t originally part of the project, but when owners C.H. “Buck” and Carlotta Stahl hired Pierre Koenig to turn their vision into reality, it joined the Case Study House program as number 22.  The result was an L-shaped, one-story glass-and-steel masterpiece that appears to float over its hillside lot, capturing uninterrupted views of the city below, ahead of its time and an icon of mid-century modern design.

stahl-house-carport

The Stahl House’s modest, unassuming presence ends abruptly as you walk through the front door. The panoramic views are so immediate and so stunning that it would be easy to walk right into the swimming pool as you make your way to the edge of the property! The setting is both peaceful and electric. And in an interesting twist of roles, the house seems to become a backdrop for the scenery, giving the impression that it has been there all along.

stahl-house-view

Every room in the 2,200-square-foot house is walled in glass and opens onto the patio and the city views beyond. There are two bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a kitchen, dining area and living room. A large stone fireplace separates the living room and dining/kitchen spaces, foreshadowing the “great room” concept of the late 20 th century and today’s popular “open concept” home designs.

stahl-house-living-room

After the house was completed in 1960, architectural photographer Julius Shulman captured its essence with an iconic black-and-white photo of two young women conversing in the living room, the lights of Los Angeles twinkling in the distant evening sky. Shulman’s photo has become more recognizable than the house itself, an image representing an era – or representing what we may think of when that era comes to mind.

julius-shulman-photo-stahl-house

“But somehow that one scene expresses what architecture is all about. What if I hadn’t gone outside to see the view? I would have missed a historic photograph, and more than that, we would have missed the opportunity to introduce this kind of architecture to the world.” ~Julius Shulman, The Making of an Icon.

As we wandered through the rooms, I imagined what it must have been like for the Stahl’s three children to grow up in that house at a similar time as my own childhood in Minnesota, but with such a different vista and perspective. I thought about the roles the house has played – from hosting movies and photo shoots to a bucket list destination for architecture fans. I took in the little details – the vintage-looking spice bottles in the kitchen, the green shag carpeting covering one of the powder room walls, the plaque from the City of Los Angeles Heritage Commission designating the house as “Historical Cultural Monument No, 670.”

stahl-house-interior-dining-room

Our tour of the Stahl House lasted about an hour. Our guide had played more of a docent role, answering questions and allowing the small group of about 20 to explore on our own. Cameras were not allowed, but we were permitted to take photos with our cell phones. Everyone took turns sitting in the coveted spots along the edge of the patio, on the chaise lounges by the pool, and in the chair in the living room corner where Shulman’s famous photo was immortalized.

stahl-house-shulman-photo-spot

I was happy to learn that the Stahl family still owns the house and lives there part-time. We were told that they continue to refuse incredibly lucrative and tempting offers to purchase the property. But maybe the temptation isn’t as great as it would seem. Mixed in with the architectural masterpiece and spectacular setting of Case Study House Number 22 are a family’s memories…an intangible that can’t be valued at any price.

Stahl House

Time out says.

Even if you’ve never seen it in person, you’ll undoubtedly recognize the Stahl House (Case Study House #22 for you modernist fanatics) and its twinkly vista. There’s barely more to it than a roof, floor-to-ceiling windows and a swimming pool, but the Hollywood Hills house emits that magic that so many of us have found—or spend our lives chasing—in Los Angeles.

The limited timed tours are pricey and popular (particularly the ones around sunset) and only offered on Wednesdays, Saturdays and two Fridays a month. Reservations become available (and are immediately snatched up) about three months in advance, so you’ll want to check the website for the latest reservation release info.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

What an amazing evening spent at the Stahl Family home! I cannot describe the experience as the gate opens from the carport and you get your first glimpse of the house past the pool. Our docent, Scott, was knowledgeable and passionate about the home, and let all the visitors have plenty of time to take it all in. Mighty recommend this tour and well worth the $35 entry fee, which goes to restoring the home.

We visited this iconic house for the sunset tour on Nov. 9. I hadn't even realized it was available for touring until a saw someone's Facebook post last spring. I went online to book a tour but found no openings until November. We tour historic houses all over the world and have seen pretty much every home worth touring in the LA area. I wasn't sure what to expect since the Stahl house is only 2200 square feet. However, this was possibly my favorite home tour ever. Why? Because we felt more like we were invited to a small house party in the Hollywood Hills than that we were taking a tour. The tour guide let us all wander the pool area and house, sit on the furniture (not original), and take photos. Then he gathered us in the living room to sit and watch that incredible sunset while he told us the history of the place. The stunning views, that time piece of a house, and the format of the small tour create an incredible experience. I think we were there for about an hour and 40 minutes, and we were never bored. Definitely take the sunset tour if you can. And bring a camera.

If you are doing L.A. do the Stahl house (just do it); It is one of the premier icons in L.A.. It's seen in countless print media, movies etc. It's one of the coolest things to do when visiting Tinsel Town. Costing a full pouch of coinage to take a tour, but, oh well, everything in L.A. has a hefty price tag. Wear your vintage clothing; a nice touch when you take your pix. Also on the historical landmark list. It's famous, and that's why we go; it's small and probably not the best example of glass houses, but it's famous; it's not really much of a tour, but it's famous and that's why we do. Everything else has been said below.

If you're a fan of architecture, or particularly Mid century design, this is a must see on your LA list. We took an afternoon tour and the host, Andrew, was friendly and knowledgeable. As a friend of the family, he shared lots of personal stories and also his knowledge of the building and architecture. There were around 10 people on the tour which was a perfect size and were able to view almost eh entire home. We also took our 5 year old with us and she was entertained by Andrew's lovely daughter. It is truly a sight to behold and breathe in.

One of the most amazing and beautiful view I have ever seen in LA! Definitely suggest paying extra and going on the evening tour so you can see the different lighting throughout the hour and a half that you have there. You park by at the house in the Hollywood Hills and they give you a brief explanation and then you're free to roam and take pictures. Every angle of the house is so photogenic. The mid century modern glass house is a special place and so grateful that the Stahl family opened it up to the public to share their special home. Absolutely loved my experience and time there.

I finally got the chance to schedule a tour of The Stahl House and it was worth every dollar! I love that the tour groups are smaller so you really get a chance to enjoy the architecture and views, as well as get some awesome photos of the place. I booked the midday tour which is the longest (and more expensive) tour, because you get to see the transition from day to night. It's amazing. What's cool is that the tour guide is a personal friend of the Stahls' and really knows the ins and outs of the history. I visited in mid-November and it definitely got chilly so be sure to bring a jacket. It's also situated in the windy hills of Hollywood so I wouldn't recommend driving a super lowered car. My friend drove his Audi and it took a pretty long time to get in and out of the driveway...and not without a scratch :'( Anyway, definitely, definitely worth a trip whether you're visiting or a local angelenos. I did a blog post on my visit with more facts, links and photos so check it out if you want the nitty gritty details of my trip! http://anythingforthecrown.com/chasing-fall-stahl-house/

The views are unbelievable!! This deserves to be on your bucket list. So worth a visit!!!!!

This is iconic LA residence that's now open for private tours! We've all seen nice houses with magnificent views and infinity pools but this one is special. It's small but cozy, intimate and very Zen. Truly magical place! I want to come back! Tips: plan your visit in advance because spots fill out fast. Evening tours are more expensive but better because you get to see daytime, nighttime and sunset views of the house and LA.

I was turned away from a tour (the door was closed in my face and I wasn't even allowed on the premise) that I paid for at the Stahl House so I will definitely NOT be coming back even though I've been wanting/dreaming to see the Stahl house for months. Extremely disappointed by the customer service and their rude treatment. My cousin lives in San Diego and she took time off of work and drove all the way to LA to come see the Stahl house with me. She purchased both of our tickets online. The first time she received an automated cancellation notice and was confused, so she called Sherri to clear things up. So she then re-bought the tickets and Sherri told her that as long as we received a confirmation e-mail, we would be fine and our tickets would be good to go. With a confirmation e-mail in hand for June 6th, we showed up at the Stahl house but had trouble finding the house in the hilly path so we arrived 13 minutes late. Randy answered and we told him our names. His demeanor instantly changed when he found out we were not "on the list." We showed him the June 6th confirmation e-mail as well as a a Paypal receipt. Randy didn't care that we were showing him proof that we bought tickets, he just kept saying we "weren't on the list." When we showed him the Paypal receipt he told us that that didn't mean we had paid for the ticket, it meant that we had reserved a ticket but didn't actually pay. We were baffled by this as we were showing him a receipt for $70!! He was telling us to our faces that this wasn't a proof of payment! He said proof of payment was a confirmation e-mail. We then showed him the confirmation e-mail for June 6th. He acted extremely suspicious of us (I strongly suspect he thought we were trying to get a free ticket) and then called Sherri on the phone. He referred to us as "two females" even though we told him our names and was explaining the situation to her. The most disturbing thing I heard him say was "yeah, yeah. I'll shut this down." "I'll shut this down??" I was shocked he would say that while we were standing right there. He did apologize to us but said "I've got people in there and they've only got an hour. So I have to get back to them." As if we were not people too? He was treating us like we were intruding upon his tour with "real" people that paid "real" money... when we were fully paying customers ourselves. Then he starts saying "this is why we have people come early" as if to blame the situation on us arriving a bit late and suddenly causing a hold up. Even though I heard him say on the phone that there was a no-show to the tour, he STILL would not even allow us on the premise of the Stahl house and shut the door on us telling us to call Sherri. When I asked for Sherri's phone #, he wouldn't even give it to us. He just said we should check the website. My cousin and I were in total shock of how we were treated. When we called Sherri she continued to tell us that we did not actually pay for the tour and it was only after continuous callbacks that she told us we DID pay for the tour even though we received a confirmation e-mail for June 6th, we selected "June 5th" in the checkout area. So instead of apologizing for the mix-up, we were "blamed" for ordering for the wrong date. First of all, there wasn't even a tour given on June 5th. Why was that an option in the checkout area? Why can't they keep track of who paid and who did not pay? Why were they so confused by our receipt and confirmation e-mail? Plus our confirmation e-mail said June 6th, we arrived on June 6th and they still did not honor that. Then they kept telling us we never paid for the tour when we paid a good $70! The entire time they treated us like we were in the wrong the entire time, we ordered the tour incorrectly, we showed up late, we weren't "on the list," we parked in the wrong area. We did get our money refunded, and this whole transaction on the phone happened right outside the Stahl house, the place they wouldn't let us into, a tour that we fully paid $70 for. This is definitely a very "exclusive" and "private" type of tour. They are not welcoming or friendly at all. I am sad that I never got to visit such a beautiful location, but I honestly lost all interest in ever coming back. tl:dr even if you shelled out $70 for this tour, they might turn you away at the door and act suspicious of you the entire time.

Hello. I am very sorry that you feel this way. Your reservation was removed from the system because you did not make the necessary payment to hold your reservation for the tour. I spoke with you on the telephone regarding the removal and you made another reservation and paid for June 5th at 5:15 p.m., one of two tours offered that day. A confirmation was emailed to you with your tour date of June 5th at 5:15 pm. You and your guest arrived at the Stahl House on June 6th. All of our June 6th tours were sold out and we had reached our maximum number of guests on our tours. When I spoke with you on the telephone, outside of the Stahl House, I offered to reschedule your tour or perhaps refund your tour fee. You chose a refund, which I processed immediately. I am sorry, but you arrived at the Stahl House, on the wrong day. Thank you, Shari

Yeah it's a beautiful home, with an amazing view, but there is no way I would pay 90 bucks to see it. I was invited by a friend who was suckered into taking the tour by a friend of hers. By the way, you read that right, I said 90 dollars per person. Or 50 per person if you buy two. They also had a cheaper tour at 60 dollars per person or 35 per person if you buy two or more. Don't get me wrong, the house is something to see, but I do not feel that it's worth that much money. Perhaps because I am not materialistic and don't care for luxury it's didn't impress me like it did my friend. Years as a paramedic has taught me that money does not buy happiness nor its a reflection of a person's worth as a human being. There are other things that I value more in people. But if you like money and what it can do for you, even if deep inside you are not truly happy, this is a must see place. Some may say that I missed to point. That the house is more about the architectural beauty than money, but is it really? In my opinion both go hand to hand. Also, if you enjoy photography, leave your camera at home. They only aloud you to take pictures with cell phones. No other type of camera is allowed. And you have to sign releases. There is just too many rules. I felt like I was a kid being watched all the time by a parent that was ready to snap at me at any time. Don't get me wrong, the guy was very nice but watchful like a hawk. They have this idea about the house being exploited if they were to aloud people to take pictures with a good camera. Can you spell paranoia?

Stahl house la tour: iconic mid-century modern home los angeles architecture, beetle house tim burton restaurant..

stahl house tours tickets

Pinch me… I’m traveling somewhere fun in a few days!

This will be my first trip since Portland in late February… and 100% in accordance with the B.C. government’s travel and social distancing guidelines. (I’m forever on the cautious side, when it comes to Covid… and I wish more people were.)

Can you guess where I’m going? Take a peek at my social media — @lacarmina Instagram, Twitter , Facebook — to be part of my journey.

(This Tokyo photo by Said Karlsson is unrelated, but expresses my excitement… and how much I miss Japan. Never thought the country would be cut off from me like this. Can’t wait to go back).

But this eagle’s nest wouldn’t be a bad spot to spend quarantine, am I right? Seated in an Eames Lounge Chair , overlooking the Hollywood Hills…

Architecture fans, this one’s for you. When I was in Los Angeles last January, I got to tour Stahl House —  glass masterpiece of mid-century modern architecture .

To top off this fabulous day, I had dinner at Beetle House: a Gothic Halloween theme restaurant that honors the world of Tim Burton. Read til the end, to see me hanging with Jack Skellington and Edwards Scissorhands!

I couldn’t visit Stahl House without re-creating the famous black and white photo, taken by Julius Shulman in 1960 (there’s a shot of it further down).  Architect Pierre Koenig’s glass house has fascinated me for years, and I jumped at the chance to finally see it in person.

Don’t just drive to Stahl House (1635 Woods Drive), as this is a private property and you won’t be able to see anything from outside. To properly visit, you must book a guided tour well in advance, through  Stahl House’s website. (Of course, this isn’t possible with Covid right now — but bookmark this for the future.)

Stahl House only offers a limited number of small-group tours, and they sell out extremely quickly (often months in advance). I messaged them to find out when the next month’s slots would be released, and got tickets on that exact day.

The narrow, winding streets have limited parking space, so you’re encouraged to carpool or ride-share, and arrive early.

I parked in the carport, and waited with anticipation in front of the C.S.H. #22 glass door. (This refers to C ase Study House No. 22, one of the experimental residential homes commissioned by Arts & Architecture Magazine from 1945-1966.)

As soon as the guide lets you in, you’ll understand why Stahl House is an icon of American mid-century design.

Built in 1960, this dreamy residence wasn’t a party pad for a celebrity. It was the beloved home of an ordinary family with three kids!  Imagine spending your childhood waking up to these views, and plunging into the pool.

In 1954, Bruce Stahl (Buck) and his wife Carlotta bought the undeveloped land for $13,500 . They brought their vision to young architect Pierre Koenig, and he made this modernist fairytale home come to life.

Much of the construction was DIY — Buck gathered discarded concrete from around the city, and pieced it together to make the foundation. (It would be impossible to build Stahl House today, as it would violate current zoning and safety laws!)

The afternoon tour lasts an hour. Our guide first let us wander and take photos. Then, we gathered in the living room to hear how Stahl House came to be.

Did I adopt a barefoot lifestyle in LA? Not quite. All guests must take off their shoes to avoid damaging the property. In addition, you can only take photos with a smartphone, so leave your DSLR and video cameras at home. (Good thing I had upgraded to an iPhone 11.)

Photographer Julius Shulman visited Stahl House in 1960, and snapped this well-known image of two women chatting in the corner at night.

Lauren and I had fun sitting in the exact spot as these ladies. But we also got a kick out of seeing the parts of Stahl House that are never photographed… like the tiny wallpapered bathroom!

Here’s my tribute to Shulman’s Stahl House photo. The angle captures the magic of lounging in the living room, which seems to float over Laurel Canyon. Clean lines and panoramic views… modernist perfection.

We got to explore most of the 2200 square foot house at our leisure . (One of the two bedrooms was off-limits, as well as one of the bathrooms. But we got full access to the kitchen, dining and living rooms).

Stahl House was furnished in collaboration with Design Within Reach, purveyors of modern furniture. If you’ve seen photos of my apartment, then you’ll know I adore these types of interiors.

Every room has floor-to-ceiling glass windows, for mesmerizing views over Laurel Canyon LA.

We learned there were downsides to living in a”glass house” — the constant UV coming through the windows quickly faded the furniture and finishings. Stahl House had to be constantly maintained by the family to keep it true to its original incarnation. (The property is owned and managed by the three children who grew up here.)

Stahl House was an “open concept” pioneer. The stone fireplace divides the living room from the cooking and dining areas.

When Stahl House’s reservations open up again, be sure to book tickets as far in advance as possible. There are limited time slots and each tour has maximum 20 people.

Our guide  wasn’t sure how long the family would be running these tours for the public, or if the home may be sold in the future. If you get the chance to see Stahl House, jump at it!

This inspiring day wasn’t over yet. We headed to Hollywood for dinner and drinks at Beetle House LA .

This theme restaurant tips its hat to the B eetlejuice movie, Halloween and Tim Burton’s cinematic oeuvre (but it’s not owned or officially associated with the Gothic director). Beetle House has locations in both Los Angeles and New York , as you can gleam from the grinning pumpkin logo.

At Beetle House, the food is excellent, and presented with dramatic flair. We dined on Sweeney Beef (steak on a cloud of potatoes, with a drizzle of “blood” and topped with a razor!) The seared salmon with red pepper puree and sweet corn succotash is named Big Fish.

Head to the outdoor patio, and get swallowed by Dante’s Inferno Room. (It looks exactly like the Satanic hangout in Beetlejuice, where red-faced devil ladies entice the main character, played by Michael Keaton!)

While we drank and ate, we watched immersive sideshow acts throughout the entire restaurant space. The performances are constantly changing; you may encounter magic tricks, contortionists, impersonators…

That night, we heard a song from Mrs. Lovett (played by Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.) Edward Scissorhands appears to be looking on in horror, at the balloon swallower!

A last look at Tim Burton’s swirling visual aesthetic. Thanks Beetle House LA for an evening to remember.

Where would you prefer to spend your lockdown — at the modernist Stahl House, or a Halloween themed eatery?

Happy that I get to spread my wings a little, and do some travel this week … Add me on @lacarmina Instagram, Twitter , Facebook to see where I end up!

Visiting the Stahls at the Stahl House

I’ve been living and working in Los Angeles for the past 17 years. I’ve dined at some of the finest restaurants, visited some of the best places the city has to offer and taken in some great shows that come through town. Few things tend to surprise me these days – until my recent tour of the Stahl House in the Hollywood Hills. The Stahl House is one of the most famous architectural homes in Los Angeles and was immortalized in a photograph by renowned architectural photographer Julius Shulman in 1960. Designed by architect Pierre Koenig, the Stahl House is a Case Study House that was built in 1960. The Case Study Houses were experiments in residential architecture sponsored by Arts & Architecture Magazine, which commissioned major architects of the day to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes for the U.S. residential housing boom caused by the end of World War II and the return of millions of soldiers. The program ran intermittently from 1945 until 1966. While doing some marketing research for the Julius Shulman film documentary Visual Acoustics , I stumbled on a Web site for the Stahl House that is run by the family and offers architectural enthusiasts the opportunity to join a Stahl House e-mail newsletter list as well as signing up for a tour of the home. After I had a conversation with Mark Stahl, the youngest Stahl sibling, about working on the Shulman documentary, he invited me up to visit the home for one of their tour events. I arrived at the Stahl House early one Friday night very excited to visit the house I’ve seen in so many pictures. What I was in store for went far beyond a traditional tour of an iconic home. While waiting outside the home before the start of the tour, I met a Swiss couple who were so excited to see the house too. Both had been in the country for three weeks, and visiting the Stahl home was the high point of their trip to the states. Before we entered, Mark came out to greet the guests and gave us some background information about the home. Mark resides in Idaho but regularly comes in to help with the tours, to work on restoring the home and to watch over his mother, Carlotta. In addition to Mark and his mom, Shari, the middle sibling was also at the house. As you enter the home in the evening, you are automatically taken by the view of the city from this hilltop house perched in the Hollywood Hills. The view is beautiful, relaxing, indulgent and serene – even with the traffic noise below coming from Sunset Boulevard. It’s breathtaking as you visually inhale the beauty that the family patriarch, Buck Stahl, saw on this piece of property that once served as a dumping ground for excavated dirt during the development of the hill when he purchased the parcel in 1954. The elder Stahl’s presence is still felt in this home, even though he passed away in 2005. Mrs. Stahl and the children, who bear a striking resemblance to their father, fondly remember him during conversations with guests as they roam in and out of the home. And, this has to be one of the most endearing parts of the tour itself: Instead of being led around by docents giving you facts about the home and tidbits about the family, you have access to the family themselves. Mrs. Stahl, who is 80 years old, is still able to capture your imagination with tales about this magnificent home. She has such affection for her late husband and becomes teary-eyed as she describes how he loved to use the fireplace in the house and how she hadn’t used it since he passed away. The Stahls are such an easygoing, regular American family, and you can just about ask them anything. I felt so comfortable hanging out with all of them as they told us story after story. For such an iconic home, you might expect some pretentiousness with the owners, but that is not the case at all. I said to the siblings, “You must have had some great parties here back in the day when the parents were out of town.” And, you could see the gleam in their eyes as they described some Halloween parties that included guests falling over the ledge of the home because they were so intoxicated. [Please note, all guests survived and only fell into the bushes below the home.] Also, Shari mentioned that as small children, they had to put on life vests every morning when they got up because none of them knew how to swim just in case they fell into the pool. The Stahl boys enjoyed playing on the side of the cliff so much that their father had to put up a fence around the cliff so they wouldn’t fall. Another interesting story was how the Stahls would put up masking tape on the windows of the house in the spring because birds would fly into the glass. On a kitchen counter, there is a photo album of the family and the home during and after the construction. There are some amazing, never-before-seen photos that are going to be used in an upcoming book. Also around the house are pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Stahl when the home was built. Both remind me of a couple of Hollywood stars from the past lounging around the house. The Stahl children worked out a deal with Design Within Reach to furnish the home. All areas of the house are accessible with the exception of the family bedrooms, because the family still lives there. However, you can view the bedrooms from the outside. What is particularly interesting about the home is that you can see what is going on throughout the entire house by pretty much any vantage point within it. The house itself is still in good condition but needs a lot of renovation work to bring it back to its original integrity. Mark and his siblings, Bruce and Shari, have been doing a lot of this work on their own. The cost of the tour, $40 per person, goes into the cost of the renovation. My lasting impression of the Stahl House will not be of the home itself but of Carlotta Stahl standing on the outside patio overlooking the city. Architectural House Tour I: The Stahl House

Stahl-House-Shulman

The Stahl House’s notoriety likely comes more from the popularity of the iconic photo above and the photographer who took it, Julius Shulman, than from any other reason.

Stahl-Pool

Unlike other acclaimed homes around the world, it never had a famous resident. It was simply a dream of husband and wife, Buck and Carlotta Stahl, to turn an empty property on the Hollywood Hills i nto a home for them and their three children, Bruce, Shari and Mark.

Stahl-Clippings

During our trip to LA, we wanted to see for ourselves how a small two bedroom home could become such an architectural icon. We were surprised to find out that Melisa, wife of Bruce Stahl, was actually going to be our tour guide. Her close relations to the family made the tour that much more insightful and we left feeling quite attached to the home and stories that came with it.

Stahl-House-Diamond-View

The house was completed in 1959 with the help of little known architect at the time, Pierre Koenig. Some of the biggest panes of glass in the world had to be shipped in to build the three full floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Being perched atop the Hollywood Hills, it has the most incredible view that we’d imagine could only get better at sunset.

Stahl-House-View

The house continues to be privately owned by the Stahl family and is a testament to the pioneering spirit of west coast Americans during the mid century.

My Stylery

A visit to the Stahl House in L.A.

What: Stahl House Where: Los Angeles, USA

Insights into the Stahl House in Los Angeles

Two years ago I had the unique experience to leave my Berlin life behind and move to Los Angeles for the duration of six months. An amazing chance and I tried to make the best of it: For example, the frame and first contents for MySylery were developed there. California – especially Palm Springs – is an Eldorado for architecture enthusiasts. But L.A. has a lot to offer as well architectural wise. I don’t necessarily mean the multi-million dollar villas in Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Anyone who comes to the City of Angels should absolutely include the Stahl House (also known as Case Study House no.22) into their sightseeing program.

The bluest sky in competition with the turquoise pool

Named after it’s owner, former American Football Player C. H. “Buck” Stahl, American architect Pierre Koenig designed a modern glass construction in 1959, which by all means – if one doesn’t know any better – could also pass as a current design. Large-scale glazing as well as the use of industrial material such as steel are nothing spectacular in the minimalistic architecture nowadays – but in the 1950s it was an absolute first. Till this day the Stahl House is still in possession of the Stahl family.

Wow, what a view! On the right the Skyline of Santa Monica

The drive alone to this impressive iconic building is a highlight for itself: From Sunset Boulevard you have to drive up the partially narrow and steep streets into the Hollywood Hills. As a driver I’m constantly hoping that as little cars as possible are coming my way. From up here you have a full view over Los Angeles. When the view is good – without smog or fog – you can see the skyline of Downtown Los Angeles on the left hand and on the other side the Pacific Ocean at the horizon. What a truly stunning view!

View to the horizon

The Stahl House is not only exceptionally situated. What is mostly not possible with other ‘case study’ houses: you can also have a tour of the inside. Melissa Stahl, a friendly woman in her late-forties welcomes me and the other tour members while conducting the small car-convoy onto the restricted parking area. The mother of three and wife of one of the Stahl sons very personally narrates the experiences of her husband, who has spent his childhood here. The construction of the building then cost 35.000 US dollars. Today there are buying offers of over 15 million dollars. But the Stahl’s don’t even think about selling this incredible piece of architecture. Even though none of them lives here and the preservation of the building is connected with a lot of work and money.

MyStylery_Homestory_Stahl_Haus_Los_Angeles_ (25)

Clare and I have decided: we move here! 😉

In the late nineties the landmarked building has been extensively renovated and today it is furnished with modern design classics. How Melissa’s parents-in-law have lived here is largely only documented on the framed family photos. The kitchen however is – beside the fridge – still maintained in its originality. And the guest-toilette, a transcendence of the taste of the 70s: brown-orange flowered retro wallpapers, flowery Pril-stickers on the tiles, behind the toilette a green fluffy carpet sticking on the wall. This little imperfection is everything but design-award-worthy, therefore much more authentic. After all, there have been real people living in this monument. BvH

MyStylery_Homestory_Stahl_Haus_Los_Angeles_ (24)

I was a bit queasy when I look down the steep slope. The L-shaped building has been built on a hill which had seemed not useable for construction

MyStylery’s Tip:

Book your online tickets for a tour through the Stahl-House before your stay in L.A., the tours are restricted to 25 people max and extremely popular. Tickets from 35 US Dollar. By the way, the Stahl House will be closed from May 26th to June 5th 2016

Stahl House

Stahl House is an elegant modernist-styled building in Hollywood Hills, considered an iconic example of 20th-century architecture .

The house, also known as Case Study House #22 , was designed by architect Pierre Koenig in 1959.

The history of Stahl House began in 1954, when the Stahl couple acquired a small plot of land and started to shape the house of their dreams. The couple spent the weekends of the next two years building the wall that surrounds the building, and once the house of their dreams had taken shape in their minds, they hired architect Pierre Koenig to make their dream a reality.

In 1999 Stahl House was declared Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument  and became part of the "America's Favorite Architecture"  list.

Over the years Stahl House has appeared in many photographs , advertising campaigns and films including Smog (1962), Devil's Night (1990), The Marrying Man (1991), Playing by Heart (1998), Galaxy Quest (1999), Nurse Betty (2000), and in the well-known video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Stahl House is an  attractive and fascinating building , so if you have enough time and want to visit it, it's a good idea to book as far in advance as possible , as tours usually sell out.

Crisscrossing France from Auvergne to Provence, Brittany to Paris and beyond, Tapestry Ensemble and friends will bring together a rich blend of impressionism, folk roots and a touch of jazz when they arrive in Maine to perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, at the historic Boothbay Harbor Opera House. The performance will be primarily in French.

Tapestry has toured extensively in Europe and the U.S. and also appeared in Colombia and Moscow. The group has released six albums internationally.

This Opera House program, titled “Postcards from France,” is the result of years of musical friendships and travels. The concert will open in a 16th century Burgundian court with a lively dance, “Tourdion,” inviting all to a feast of delicious food and fine wine. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many French composers held a fascination with traditional and early modal music. This is true of Gabriel Fauré and César Franck. Joseph Canteloube devoted much of his career to preserving the ancient song tradition of his birthplace, Auvergne. Tapestry will share new arrangements of his most famous work, “Chants d’auvergne,” a suite of songs for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. The language of the songs is Occitan, a language that dates back to the troubadours of southern France.

The group will perform its own arrangement of Franck’s vocal duet “Les Danses de Lormont” mixed with Max Ahram’s “Chanson de Grand-Père” with lyrics by Victor Hugo. Following the death of his son, Victor Hugo took charge of his grandchildren Georges and Jeanne Hugo. His collection of poetry “The Art of Being a Grandfather” (1877) is mainly devoted to the two of them but more generally treats with great tenderness the charm and spontaneity of childhood. The lyrics to “Les Danses de Lormont” are by French novelist and poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore who describes festive dances and stunning sunsets in the resort town of Lormont.

Advance discounted tickets are $30 at the Opera House box office at 86 Townsend Ave. or by calling (207) 633-5159. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Tickets are also available at boothbayoperahouse.com via instantseats.com, the only online authorized seller of Opera House tickets.

Taylor swift brings travis kelce onstage, performs full skit with him, taylor swift brings travis kelce on london stage ... tuxedo on, skit ready.

  • Exclusive Video

Taylor Swift 's mixing business and pleasure -- finally bringing Travis Kelce out onstage with her in London Sunday ... and, we gotta say he nailed the choreography.

The singer-songwriter took the stage in England's capital Sunday -- her third show this weekend -- and, her footballer boyfriend went from spectator to spectacle ... hitting the stage in a tuxedo and top hat.

This all went down during "The Tortured Poets Department" part of her set ... as part of the intro for "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" she pretended to throw a tantrum and collapse to the stage.

Of course ... her better half had to come and rescue her -- picking her up and carrying her to a heart-shaped bed while jovial, upbeat music played.

Check out the clip ... he drops her on the bed before fanning himself while the other two guys in tuxedos continue to care for T-Swift -- and Travis helps encourage her to get back at it with some of his silliest dance moves.

Ultimately, Taylor decides to bravely continue ... and Travis gives her makeup a touchup before running offstage.

Of course, Travis has supported Taylor at every show this weekend ... including Friday when he brought his big bro Jason and sister-in-law Kylie to watch and yesterday when he got chummy with movie star Tom Cruise .

This, however, is the first time he's ever gotten involved in the show despite attending many of her concerts since they started dating ... and, if you listen to the applause -- fans absolutely loved it.

Travis has to head back to Kansas City soon to start gearing up for football season ... so, unclear when he'll get a chance to attend another Taylor show.

But, clearly Swifties want him to know he's always a welcome sight onstage.
