‘Tales From the Tour Bus’ Review: Mike Judge’s Clever Cartoon is Outlaw Country’s ‘Drunk History’

“You don’t like country music, do you? You think it’s corny and twangy and kind of stupid? Well, you could be right, but it’s always good to keep an open mind.”

Like most fans of country music, Mike Judge is sick of people dismissing his musical genre of choice. A New Mexico native and consistent chronicler of working class folks from small American towns, it should come as no surprise to even casual fans that the “King of the Hill” creator has a penchant for musicians like Johnny Paycheck, Jerry Lee Lewis, and George Jones; so much so, he’s created a new, unique documentary series to honor their most madcap memories.

Though it’s unlikely to win over any of the haters Judge repeatedly alludes to, his latest primetime animated venture should entertain and inform devotees on the creator or country music.

Related Stories ‘Interview with the Vampire’ Just Dropped the Most Audacious TV Episode of the Year ‘Fantasmas’ Is Operating on a Level of Brilliance Beyond the Bizarre

“Mike Judge Presents Tales From the Tour Bus ” is both exactly what it sounds like and so much more: Blending live-action archival footage with animated sequences of interviews and reenactments, Judge brings in various collaborators of the country music artists spotlighted in each half-hour episode and animates the stories they tell. When Johnny Paycheck’s former bandmates talk about him showing up for a court date shirtless, a hand-drawn version of Paycheck sits in front of the judge, middle fingers raised to the sky, and naked from the waste up.

Mike Judge Presents Tales From the Tour Bus Season 1

The talking heads are animated, too. (The only parts that aren’t animated are choice archival photos and videos.) Judge himself only appears in animated form, but he’s front-and-center in the series: His name’s at the front of the title, and he’s center-frame telling tales from the bus. Though he fades into occasional narration as the episodes progress — ceding time to those who lived the stories they’re recounting — his presence remains, thanks, in part, to the style in which they’re told.

Judge uses his introductions — sitting on the bus with a beer in the deepened, spill-proof cup-holders, a guitar hanging next to an open window, and a framed photo of Tammy Wynette behind his head — to frame each story in a wider historical context. He compares Johnny Paycheck to N.W.A. in both how many records each sold and by asking why the latter was more controversial than the former, despite similarly dicey off-stage activities (not that Judge is unaware of the reason).

The episodes don’t necessarily respond to these comparisons in any antagonistic or pertinent manner; largely, it’s storytelling for the sake of storytelling. The above quote is the first thing Judge says in the pilot, and this dry methodology of his is used to juxtapose the insanity of what these men have done. Each episode starts with the jocular intro:

The following is about real people and real events. However, due to the passage of time and, in some cases, indulgence in both controlled and illicit substances, details of some tales are a bit hazy.

Mike Judge Presents Tales From the Tour Bus Season 1 Johnny Paycheck

The details that survived an onslaught of booze, drugs, and the slow tick of time are quite telling. These icons have lived in Matthew McConaughey’s sense of the word . Multiple episodes feature gunfire aimed at other human beings, including two instances where someone is shot in the head and survives. George Jones gets tied to a tree after accosting a man outside his home. There’s a wrestling match in a public bathroom because a jealous musician grabbed his wife’s ex-lover’s penis.

The subjects describing such stories do so with a casual tone but emphatic pride emulated by the series itself. Sometimes they’ll provide remembered or imagined dialogue for a scene and the animated sequence depicting it will incorporate their voices, “Drunk History” style, rather than as straight narration. Mostly, though, these figures are fascinating themselves, even in animated form, such as the unforgettable image of Jimmy McDonough, a music writer, sitting behind his kitchen table with a pair of shades on his face and a black cat perched prominently next to him.

It’s as though the cat was so important to the character it couldn’t be left out when the animators went to work, and that’s a credit to the style of the series. At its core, “Tales From the Tour Bus” is a very simple show: Its primary objective is to honor these fascinating individuals by sharing their stories with a wider audience. That could’ve been done without the animation, but Judge, as a storyteller himself, maximizes his potential audience by infusing sly humor into every visual inch of the show. Even the editing can evoke a chuckle, and that might just be enough to make a few dismissive music fans show some respect to these legends.

“Mike Judge Presents Tales From the Tour Bus” premieres Friday, September 22 at 10 p.m. ET on Cinemax.

The city tour begins in Seattle’s bustling downtown core, highlighting the Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Shopping District, and the world’s first Starbucks.

  • Chevron down 2. Pioneer Square & Stadium District

Seattle’s original downtown is now a 35-square-block historic district filled with turn-of-the-century Romanesque architecture, art galleries, and trendy restaurants, all of which border the sports stadiums for the Seahawks, Sounders, and Mariners.

  • Chevron down 3. International District & Waterfront

Home to Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Cambodian, and Hmong communities, this neighborhood continues to play a role in Seattle’s multicultural identity. Seattle’s waterfront includes the aquarium, Ferris wheel, classic seafood restaurants, funky souvenir shops, historic piers, and ferry and water taxi terminals.

  • Chevron down 4. Seattle Center & Queen Anne View Point

The Seattle Center is a 72-acre urban park and is the site of the 1962 World’s Fair. It’s the home of the Space Needle, Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project, Dale Chihuly’s Garden and Glass exhibition, and the Pacific Science Center.

Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill provides a dramatic panoramic photo opportunity of Seattle’s skyline. You also view the spectacular architecture and aesthetic in one of the city’s more exclusive, old-money neighborhoods.

  • Chevron down 5. Ballard Locks & Fremont Neighborhood

Opened in 1917, the lock system and ship canal connects the fresh water of lakes Union and Washington with the salt water of the Pacific in Puget Sound. It’s a popular destination for watching boats navigating between the two waterways. It also features a fish ladder for observing the seasonal migration of salmon.

Fremont neighborhood, famous for its outdoor art and nude bicyclists in the Summer Solstice parade, is also a microcosm of the challenges Seattle faces as it grapples with growth. This once-quirky bohemian artist colony is now transforming into a high-tech powerhouse with offices for Google, Tableau, and Adobe while remaining true to its artsy roots.

Olivia Rodrigo's 'GUTS' World Tour bus will be making stops in different cities.

Everything You Need To Know About Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour Bus

Livies, there’s even a chance to win tickets to the show.

Olivia Rodrigo is taking her GUTS World Tour on the road, and bringing along a ‘90s teenage dream bus with her. Along with a merch truck filled with butterfly totes and tees, Livies HQ announced there will be a GUTS World Tour Bus Experience parked outside the venue at each show for fans to visit.

The GUTS World Tour Bus, similar to the SOUR tour experience , is an Insta-worthy and immersive pop-up with photo ops inspired by Rodrigo’s second album. According to Broadway World , the first 1,000 fans who stop by the purple bus will also get a $10 Starbucks gift card to try the brand’s new lavender drinks .

In addition to freebies and photos, Livies can try out Rodrigo’s limited-edition violet LinkBuds S earbuds from Sony before buying them. If you’re an American Express Card Member, the GUTS World Tour Bus also has exclusive merch, as well as an Olivia Rodrigo x Amex trading card set.

Even if you don’t have tickets to the GUTS tour, you can stop by the bus experience. Admission is free, and fans will have a chance to enter a giveaway that includes tickets to the show. Of course, you have to get there early. Clara Pullam from Arkansas visited the GUTS World Tour Bus Experience before her show in Nashville, Tennessee, and had to wait around two to three hours.

I would recommend you get there earlier.

“I would recommend you get there earlier — about an hour before it opens — because after that, the bus line became pretty crowded,” Pullam tells Elite Daily. Anyone wanting to buy merch and visit the GUTS bus will have to really prep before their show, but Pullam says the experience is so worth it. “The experience was super cool.”

Along with planning when to arrive, here’s everything you need to know about Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour Bus experience:

Fans share their experience at Olivia Rodrigo's 'GUTS' tour bus experience.

The GUTS Bus Has More Than Just Photo Ops

The 'GUTS' World Tour bus has '90s details.

While snapping a pic with the red lip phone like Rodrigo was a highlight for Pullam, she says there’s way more than just photo ops at the GUTS bus. “One of my favorite things from the bus was we got to see her past tour outfits, and I am in love with her Vivienne Westwood look from SOUR ,” she says.

While waiting in line, Pullam also got to send postcards to her friends, and says the bus included photo moments from Rodrigo’s “bad idea right?” music video . Fans will also get to snap pics with a crescent moon that looks like the one Rodrigo rides around on during her set , and a glitter-filled toilet. One of the cutest details are the vintage VHS tapes on the shelf inspired by songs off Rodrigo’s GUTS album, like “Making the Bed” as She’s All That and “All-American B*tch” as Scarface.

It was super amazing to know she experienced what we experienced.

After you go through the bus and purchase merch, you also have the opportunity to bedazzle it at a styling station . Turn your tee into something retro chic if “pretty isn’t pretty enough” for you. The best part of all is that Rodrigo has gone through the bus as well. Pullam says, “It was super amazing to know she experienced what we experienced,” and you can even take your pics just like your fave homeschooled girl.

The GUTS Tour Bus Is Making Stops Along The U.S.

The 'GUTS' World Tour Bus Experience is making stops in different cities at the concert venue.

The GUTS bus made its first stop at Rodrigo’s show in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 8, and has followed along with the tour since. While Rodrigo’s site doesn’t list exactly where the GUTS experience will be, the bus is expected to appear at tour venues and local points of interest as she makes her way across the U.S.

You can also check out your tour stop’s page to find out bus information or follow her official fan account Livies HQ on Instagram.

Music stars give fans a peek inside their tour buses

by: Danielle Allen

Posted: Dec 13, 2016 / 05:13 AM CST

Updated: Dec 13, 2016 / 05:13 AM CST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Music fans had the opportunity to see how their favorite artists travel while on the road.

The Tour Bus Show was held in Hendersonville on Monday.

Hunter Hays, Chris Stapleton, Darryl Worley, 3 Doors Down, and several others lined up their buses at the Walmart on 204 North Anderson Lane.

For a small fee, fans met with some of the musicians and looked inside their buses.

Proceeds from the event go toward Christmas 4 Kids. It’s a non-profit organization that makes sure children in need have a merry Christmas.

On Tuesday, 400 underprivileged students will be picked up from school by a tour bus. They will then go to Walmart where they’ll get $150 to spend on themselves.

“You’ll have children come and shop and spend all their money on gifts for their family members,” said country star Darryl Worley. “The whole thing is just a big ole blessing, and it’s a really good time of the year to be doing something like this.”

The children will also go to dinner and attend a party hosted by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Tripadvisor, may 2023.

What a wonderful experience in Detroit! I have lived in Michigan for 20+ years and have only been to a few key places in Detroit (Comerica Park and the Fox theater mainly). This tour provided me with so many ideas, restaurants, and places to come back and check out. We had a short stop at a restaurant for snacks and drinks and we had a really great time. The sunset was beautiful and it was a perfect date night for a young couple. Karin also provided us with a ton of history about Detroit, she is full of knowledge and we loved to hear everything she had to say about the various places we were driving by. We are looking forward to more tours with City Tour Detroit!

TripAdvisor, January 2023

Absolutely fantastic experience with City Tour Detroit. The tour is very well-thought-out, rich with fascinating history, and punctuated with stops for some of Detroit’s best culinary experiences.

Karin was our tour guide, and she is a font of knowledge about both the historic and contemporary details of Detroit. She is an excellent ambassador for the city, as well as a gold mine of knowledge about a city so abundant in history, character, and significance.

TripAdvisor, April 2023

Excellent tour! Highly recommended! The tour explore the rich historical events that took place in Detroit during the slavery. With a very prepared guide and actors a vivid drama shows how the fugitive slaves were able to find freedom crossing Detroit in their way to Canada.

Tripadvisor, july 2023.

An outstanding tour! Jason was exceptionally informative and answered just about every question I could think of about Detroit. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the city, and really gave the impression that Detroit never “went away” – but that the spirit of the city remained thanks to the welcoming people who inhabit it. Can’t recommend enough.

Had a wonderful time with Jason and Laurie. So much to learn about this beautiful city. It is a hidden gem! Highly recommended a walking tour so you can get to know Detroit up front!

Paul is a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable. He provided lots of info and answered all our questions. Even though it rained and was cold and windy, we had a great time and would do it again! Highly recommend this tour.

The Rotunda Building was not Henry Ford's only futuristic idea ondisplay at the 1934 World's Fair/Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Always looking to be in the vanguard of the next big thing, Henry thought it would be the perfect place to introduce an item he hoped would revolutionize transportation (and lead to big sales)- his high-speed Railplane! Ford had enlisted William Bushnell Stout to design it (he had also done the Ford Tri-Motor airplane). Pullman Manufacturing made the prototype. It had a lot going for it- 60 feet long with a streamlined aluminum body that let its twin 6 cylinder truck engines push it to top speeds over 90 MPH while getting 5 miles per gallon of gas (pretty good for a train)! All that plus good looks and a smooth quiet ride. What more could you ask for? Sales! There weren't any! Union Pacific ordered one 3-car version and that was it! The project was dropped. Detroit News photos of its October 26, 1933 test run on the DT&I track in Dearborn shown courtesy of: Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University ...

#MondayMemories Along a certain stretch of track, running south from the Rouge Plant through Melvindale, Allen Park, and Taylor, you may have noticed and wondered about some strange structures. These catenary arches are remnants of Henry Ford's 1920s attempt to electrify the Detroit, Toledo, & Ironton rail line that fed his factories. After the project was abandoned, plans were made to remove the arches. Made of wet-cured concrete in Ford's Rouge Plant, it was discovered that they were almost indestructible. It took 6-man crews an entire day to remove a single arch; after 2 months it was decided to leave the rest. They're still here. I believe these are the southernmost remaining ones. I'm standing on Pennsylvania west of Allen Road. ...

See inside Dolly Parton’s tour bus designed by the country star herself

Dolly Parton gives fans a tour of her "Gypsy Wagon."

After working "9 to 5," where does legendary singer Dolly Parton rest up? Her tour bus, of course.

Now, thanks to Dollywood, you can book that tour bus (which is called "Gyspy Wagon" by Parton) yourself!

Dollywood recently released photos of the "Gypsy Wagon" to promote a special accommodation the park is offering: up to two guests can stay at least two nights in "Dolly Suite 1986" (aka on the tour bus). The cost to do so begins at $10,000.

Dollyworld offers an opportunity for its guests to stay on Parton's tour bus.

Aside from being a wildly successful country music icon, Parton also is a "free-spirited traveler," according to a Dollywood press release — so it's no wonder her tour bus is decorated akin to her personality.

According to that press release, Parton used this tour bus from 2008 to 2022, marking 13 years of traveling across the country. In that stretch of time, she did the most traveling on her 2016 "Pure & Simple" tour, where she visited more than 60 cities in North America.

Parton's bus from the exterior.

While the outside of the bus may appear just as an average tour bus (you know, aside from the big, pink "Dolly" sticker), the interior proves to be a wonderfully-curated collection of items and furniture that are so Dolly Parton.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a sitting area that exudes '70s vibes, complete with antique accessories like a vintage telephone. Don't worry though, there is a modern television!

According to Dollywood, Parton specifically requested the hand-painted murals that adorn the walls in this room.

Sitting room in Dolly's tour bus.

"These unique paintings of wayfaring wanderers, wagons and crystal balls paint the interpretation of life on the road for the singer," the press release reads.

The bedroom features brightly-colored accents and some personal memorabilia from Parton herself.

Then, enter the bedroom, which is by far the most quintessential "Dolly" room you'll probably ever see.

The bedroom boasts lots of jewel-toned accents, such as hot pink and blue wall designs — even the bedding, complete with fuzzy pink pillows, is a signature hot pink.

Her makeup vanity is also on display, complete with a makeup mirror, flowers in a vase and a perfectly-picked pink and purple vanity chair to match.

Parton's closer, complete with shoes, outfits and accessories from Parton.

Open the closet door and guests can get a glimpse of some outfits and accessories the singer has worn.

And the standout detail of the bedroom: Parton's wig cabinet. Parton herself said that her wigs have sort of become her "trademark" over the years, so it's no wonder the singer wants some of them on display for her guests.

Parton's trademark wigs are on display for guests.

Parton's home away from home includes a plethora of design details that perfectly encapsulate who she is. Our only question now is: When do we get to stay?

Kayla Clarke , Senior Web Producer

DETROIT – We have everything you need to know about the 2024 Ford Fireworks.

How to watch the Ford Fireworks from home

The 66th annual Ford Fireworks are set to light up the Downtown Detroit sky on Monday, June 24. The fireworks show will be broadcast live on Local 4 and Local 4+, which is available for free, even outside the Detroit area.

Watch the 66th annual Ford Fireworks live here on Local 4+ with pre-show coverage at 8 p.m. and the fireworks show at 10 p.m.

Best Downtown Detroit viewing spots

The following locations are considered the best places to watch the Ford Fireworks in person:

  • Belle Isle (Viewing from the MacArthur Bridge is not allowed)
  • Spirit Plaza

📷 Share your photos of fireworks celebrations with us on MIPics!

Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza are both open to the public. People are not allowed to set up or gather before 2 p.m. on June 24. The plazas will remain open until capacity is reached and there is no re-admittance into either plaza. Anyone who enters will have to undergo a security screening that will include the searching of backpacks and coolers.

What to know about the rules at Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza:

  • No tents, alcohol, drones, pets, or contraband (weapons, knives, etc.) will be allowed.
  • Flames or fires are prohibited, and cooking is prohibited.
  • Fireworks are not allowed.
  • Reserving an area in excess of the number of people currently in the group is prohibited.

Belle Isle will be closed on Monday until 2 p.m. The island will open to vehicular traffic at 2 p.m. and remain open until capacity is reached. The island will open at 5 a.m. to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Drivers will need a Recreation Passport to enter the island. The passport is only needed for vehicles and can be purchased at the entrance for $14. The passport costs $11 for out-of-state and international visitors for the day. When capacity is reached, no other vehicles will be allowed in the park.

You can get updates on when the island is full by texting GEM to 80888.
