Women-only travel groups offer the chance to explore destinations with like-minded travelers and serve as safe spaces for trying new activities like whitewater rafting or rock climbing. They also tend to be great options for women who want to see the world but may not have a travel companion at the ready.

It’s hard to put into words how incredible my experience with SoFe in Morocco was. SoFe found the best guides to show us every facet of each city we visited. To see life in Morocco through a female's eyes was unique and something I will never forget. - ANNA

solo travel for women to Egypt

What is a solo traveler?

There are many purposes and reasons to travel alone. Maybe you find that you’re better able to explore a place and notice more details when you’re traveling by yourself. Perhaps you prefer the flexibility of being able to pick a destination off your bucket list.

Solo travelers encompass a wide variety of ages and demographics. Single Travel has written content to cater to a diverse range of demographics and interests. You’ll find solo travel articles on solo travel for women, as well as for specific age groups, such as those in their 20’s and 30’s, over 40’s, over 50’s, over 60’s, and seniors.

Traveling alone as a woman can be an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in a different environment, meet new people, and discover your true interests.

With the increasing popularity of solo travel for women, various online communities have gained traction, such as the Reddit solo travel group, and the Tripadvisor forum.

Endless Experiences Await

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your search for ""

What is solo female travel?

The term solo female travel generally refers to traveling alone, on a self-guided itinerary. But traveling solo doesn’t have to mean traveling alone, or indeed, under your own steam. Choosing small group travel offers you plenty of time and space to do your own thing, as well as the opportunity to meet like-minded fellow travelers. Plus – the peace of mind knowing that everything is taken care of by destination experts.

How to find female solo travel partners?

Our small group Women-Only Tours are the perfect way to find like-minded solo travel partners. Choose from 11 enriching and inspiring itineraries, where the experiences, destinations, ‘Business Class style’ transport and hand-picked 4- and 5-star hotels are all included. Get to know your fellow female travelers over dinners at top-rated restaurants, and through Insightful Encounters and meaningful MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences. You can also join our Insight Vacations Facebook group and meet fellow female travelers there.

Where is the best place to travel solo female?

Where you choose to go really depends on what you want from your vacation. Do you want to try somewhere new, step out of your comfort zone or maybe rediscover a place you’ve been before in a whole new light? With our Women-Only tours, we offer a wide variety of options, including Europe, America, India and Morocco, so there's something for everyone.

What size are the groups on Women-Only tours?

All Women-Only tours are small groups. The maximum group size is 24 but the average group size is 20.

How can a senior woman travel alone?

The key is to do what feels comfortable. There are many options based on individual preferences. We’ve found that senior female travelers enjoy tours for the camaraderie and added sense of security, plus a premium level of hotel, dining and comfort, and our Women-Only Tours are curated with all this in mind.

What is the safest country for solo females?

Primarily, the countries that women feel most secure in tend to be the ones that they are most familiar with. North America and Europe are great starting points. Both destinations have mature tourism industries that provide plenty of support to visitors. For destinations less familiar or more adventurous (hiking Machu Picchu, for example), a tour can help women feel more secure and confident.

Which country is the safest for solo female travelers in Europe?

Europe encompasses many different countries with different experiences. Overall, as a collection of mostly wealthy Western democracies, crime is low and travelers can feel safe. Scotland and Ireland are especially warm and welcoming, as are Italy and Spain. It is always advisable to check government advisories for travel and to travel smart, wherever your destination.

Will there be an all-women on-the-road team?

Our Women-Only tours will always be led by a female Travel Director and Local Experts. Your driver will also be a woman, where possible.

How many single occupancy rooms are available?

Due to the small size of our Women-Only tour groups, there will be plenty of single-occupancy rooms available. The only exception is our Splendours of Egypt Women-Only tour, where cabins are limited on the Nile cruise.

As a Solo Female Traveler, Here’s Where to Go

These are the best destinations for women traveling solo, plus tips for how to go..

Several tour companies cater to female travelers, offering all-women trips and tailored itineraries everywhere from India to Iceland.

In recent years, more women have sought solo adventures than ever before: In 2019, an estimated 32 million American women traveled alone, according to the U.S. Travel Association , and Google searches for “solo female travel” increased by an astounding 131 percent over the year prior. More recently, Kayak reported that solo ventures were up by 36 percent in 2023, and Condor Ferries found that 84 percent of solo-travel bookings were made by women from 2020 to 2021. While today a greater number of women are taking solo trips —thanks in large part to shifting societal expectations regarding gender roles, as well as increased financial freedom—there’s no question that women face unique risks when traveling alone . Here are some of the best destinations for women traveling solo and tips for how to go safely.

The best destinations for solo female travelers

It can be hard to distill an entire country’s level of safety into a single chart, let alone compare the entire world. But when you’re setting out on a solo adventure, it’s important to pull as much data together as possible. Luckily, the annual Women Peace and Security Index reveals global trends of women’s equality based on three “basic dimensions”: inclusion (economic, social, political); justice (formal laws and discriminatory norms); and security (how it protects against violence at familial, community, and societal levels).

The annual ranking, produced by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in partnership with the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, uses reputable data sourced from national statistical offices, U.N. organizations, and international surveys such as Gallup. With this information, the report ranks countries based on how their governments and populations treat women—those who live in the country and those who travel to it. In short, the report offers an intensive look into countries, tackling the mini questions that fall into the umbrella query “Is it safe to go there?”

The top countries for women’s equality

The Women Peace and Security Index was published in early February, ranking 167 countries based on women’s equality. According to the report’s findings, Denmark was the top-ranking country, with particularly high ratings in financial inclusion and women’s perception of community safety. Switzerland followed closely in second, with similar findings for women’s perception of community safety and economic opportunity.

Singapore ranked the highest for women’s perception of community safety, but despite landing in the top spot for the safest country for women, didn’t rank on the overall list of destinations that exhibit women’s equality—potentially due to its low ranking for legal discrimination against women (such as laws or regulations that limit women’s ability to participate in society and the economy).

Here are the top 10 countries for women’s equality, according to the 2023 Women Peace and Security Index:

  • Switzerland
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand

The best cities for solo female travelers

Tourlane, a trip-planning and -booking service, released its list of the top cities for female solo travelers to visit in 2020 , inspired by some of the findings from the 2019–20 Women Peace and Security Index. The ranking, which includes 50 international cities, was curated by Tourlane’s female travel experts based on eight categories: female representation in local business, gender equality in society, legal equality, and safety, as well as the price of female-friendly accommodation, a taxi ride, a data plan, and the local mobile internet speed. On Tourlane’s list, Ljubljana, Slovenia, came in first place. The capital city scored 9.73 out of 10 points in the justice category, referring to the destination’s “low number of laws that limit or differentiate women from men.” It also received high women’s equality and safety rankings. Singapore landed in second place, but the city-state in Southeast Asia received the highest safety score of any destination on the list (a perfect 10 out of 10), making Singapore a clear choice for women who are interested in traveling solo but haven’t yet done so due to safety concerns. Here are Tourlane’s 10 best cities for solo female travelers:

  • Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • Vilnius, Lithuania
  • Tallinn, Estonia

Tips for women traveling solo

Solo travel teaches you to rely on your instincts and gives you the opportunity to wholly pursue your own interests.

Book with a female-only tour company

Here’s a fun fact: According to a 2022/2023 study completed by Solo Traveler (a publication covering, as the name suggests, all things solo travel), 9 out of 10 solo travelers prefer to take tours all or some of the time. Solo women travelers make up one of the fastest-growing demographics in the travel market , and as such, an increasing number of tour companies are catering to female travelers with all-women trips and tailored itineraries. Women-owned and women-operated companies like AdventureWomen specialize in everything from mother-daughter treks in Costa Rica to all-female safaris in Botswana; others, such as Wild Women Expeditions, offer women-only outdoor expeditions—canoeing, cycling, hiking, and surfing trips—everywhere from the Galápagos to Mongolia.

Geographic Expeditions is introducing its first women-only itinerary on September 1, 2024, focused on Namibia, Africa. The country leads Africa in gender-equality efforts, according to the World Economic Forum, even surpassing some European countries and the United States. This particular journey will bring women together to experience a visit to the women-founded AfriCat Foundation (and a leopard safari across the savanna), a scenic flight over the Skeleton Coast, black rhino tracking with a female ranger from the Save the Rhino Trust , and more.

On another side of the world, Stellavision offers itineraries for self-identifying women focusing on size inclusivity. Founder Zoe Stella Shapiro teams with body-positive advocates—the first itinerary partner was Los Angeles–based creative Christina Winkelmann —to create robust experiences like private boating excursions, exclusive tastings with female vintners, and tours of ancient cave systems. Of course, non–gender-specific companies are also building new itineraries to appeal to female travelers. Intrepid Travel offers a series of Women’s Expeditions in Morocco, Kenya, and India, among other destinations. REI Adventures leads similar women-only adventures, among them multiday treks along the Pacific Crest Trail in California or to Shenandoah , Zion , or Bryce Canyon .

Some tours are even designed to explore gender equality. As part of its Tracing Norway’s Super Women , luxury travel curator Up Norway brings travelers on a 10-day journey around the country, including Varanger (to learn about 17th-century witch trials) and the remote island of Fedje (to learn about women’s empowerment in whiskey today). Accommodations, too, focus on spotlighting women and include a stay at Camilla’s House, which is named after Norwegian writer Camilla Collett, who was once a former tenant—and is widely considered Norway’s first feminist.

Don’t overlook adventure travel opportunities

Adventure travel is on the rise among women-identifying travelers, according to the Washington Post , especially those over the age of 40. While movies, TV shows, and even Instagram give adventure travel a male-centric haze, more women are embarking on trips to far-flung places than ever before. A report titled “ The Influence & Impact of Women in Adventure Travel ” from the Adventure Travel Trade Association shares that women comprise 57 percent of people booking through global travel companies—and when the travel company is women-led, the percentage jumps to 64. (Additionally, 54 percent of the global tourism workforce identifies as women.) Plenty of tour operators offer adventurous journeys from women: Sisters Traveling Solo , which has already sold out its 2024 tours; Wild Women Expeditions , an operator with tours in 27 countries; and Adventure Women , founded in 1982.

Look to social media

If you’d rather travel on your own without the help of a tour operator, you can still turn to online resources such as the Solo Female Traveler Network for planning assistance. The Facebook group has more than 535,000 followers (and several “sister groups” that focus on topics like LGBTQ travel and adventure “over 40” ) who share their top tips about travel experiences, both the good and the bad. To join the private Facebook group, you must fill out a questionnaire to verify you’ve read the rules—this ensures that the online community remains a safe space for female travelers to converse.

Besides the Solo Female Traveler Network, many private Facebook groups for female travelers seeking specific advice have cropped up on social media in recent years, among them Vegan Women Who Travel , Over 60 Women Travel Buddy Search Group , Wandering Moms , Women+ of Color Who Travel , and Latinas Who Travel .

The power of women in travel

In March 2021, AFAR’s Katherine LaGrave reported on women’s roles in the travel industry—and together, the statistics are staggering: “Today, 56 percent of leisure travelers are women, and over the past five years, they have steadily held this majority stake. Women make close to 85 percent of all travel decisions: where to go, when to fly, where to stay, what to see,” LaGrave writes. “Of affluent travelers with annual incomes upwards of $250,000, women also account for 54 percent, according to MMGY Global, an advertising agency specializing in travel, tourism, and hospitality. In total, women represent 60 percent of the wealth in the United States, and they notch 58 percent of all online sales. Importantly, women also live longer than men and outnumber them in a crucial travel bracket—retirees—making them an investment that yields greater, and longer, returns.” Still, that is not often reflected.

“Many women believe solo travel isn’t for them because of what they look like, or who they love, because most of the faces we see in travel media are that of older, white men,” says Beth Santos, founder and CEO of Wanderful , a membership-based women’s travel community that has grown to 45,000 members since Santos founded the group in 2008; Santos is also the author of the March 2023 book Wander Woman.

“Women [often don’t feel] ‘enough’: that their travels aren’t magical enough, or ambitious enough, or perfect enough, because of the picture-perfect photos that we see on social media,” Santos says of her work to build a community of women travelers. “I realized there is an important opportunity to talk realistically with women about the messages we’re being served about traveling alone, and to give women the tools to digest and analyze them more meaningfully.”

Why solo female travel is significant

In a January 2019 Vox article that explores the modern surge in solo female travel, writer Aditi Shrikant points out that because women have historically been portrayed as “fixtures of the home,” most early solo female travel wasn’t recorded or advertised. However, women have traveled on their own throughout history—in fact, the world’s earliest travel writings were produced by a woman named Egeria in 381 C.E. (The letters she wrote on her pilgrimage to Mount Sinai are regarded as the first existing travel memoir.) “Even in modern travel writings, there is that sense a woman needs a reason to travel,” Shrikant writes. “ Wild author Cheryl Strayed hiked the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail only after a slew of debilitating life changes. Liz Gilbert’s famous quest in Eat, Pray, Love was prompted by her difficult divorce. These stories are inspiring but also uphold the status quo that women need a good, big reason to leave.”

Solo travel teaches you to rely on your instincts and gives you the opportunity to wholly pursue your interests. (You’d be surprised how much time you spend discussing what to do next when traveling with others .) Venturing into the world on your own will also push you beyond your comfort zone. That’s an experience every woman not only deserves to have but also is capable of having—which, in our humble opinion, is a “big enough” reason to leave.

This article originally appeared online in 2020; it was most recently updated on March 8, 2024, to include current information.

Get to know me:

I’m Gina the woman behind Wanderlust Solo Women Tours.

I was inspired to encourage and facilitate women’s travel after my own trans-formative experiences whilst exploring the world solo later in life.

I know the hesitations, the aspirations, and the exhilarating joy that solo travel can bring.

After overcoming personal challenges and embarking on solo adventures in my 40s and 50s, I found empowerment, confidence, community, and purpose through travel.

I discovered that change wasn’t just about changing location; it was about transforming my perspective. Through embracing the unknown, I embraced my own happiness.

Travel had not only built and instilled confidence but also connected me with a community where I finally belonged.

These experiences resonated deeply, leading me to create a movement of empowerment for solo female travel and to share soul-centered journeys. To help women overcome any fears or reservations that hold them back and step into their power of purposeful travel.

Moscow, the modern capital of Russia: 3 nights

Day 1:  Our grand tour of Russia begins in Moscow.  After an opportunity to rest and freshen up, we will walk to a nearby restaurant for a welcome dinner Russian-style and an opportunity to get acquainted with fellow travelers. (D)

Day 2:  We begin our exploration of Russian history and the lives of the women influential in the shaping of Russia with a privately guided walking tour of the Kremlin, the former residence of the tsars, now the seat of the Russian president. Visit the Kremlin Cathedrals, which date to the 15th century and served as the coronation, wedding, and burial places of early Russia royalty. Tour the Kremlin Armory, treasury of the tsars. View priceless artifacts and royal regalia including ceremonial robes, the wedding dresses of Catherine I and Catherine the Great, royal jewelry, icons, a unique collection of carriages, and Faberge eggs.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Next stroll across the famous Red Square and visit St Basil Cathedral – a landmark of the capital with bright onion-shaped cupolas.  Return to our hotel via Moscow’s Metro with its lavishly designed stations adorned with marble, mosaics, sculptures, and chandeliers. (B, L)

Day 3:  Enjoy a full-day panoramic city tour including Christ Cathedral and Novodevichy Convent. Novodevichy Convent was originally founded in 1524 to serve as a monastery and as a fortress.  Later it become a refuge for noble Russian ladies.  The convent also provided a convenient depository for unwanted female royalty, including Feodor I’s wife, Irina Godunov; Peter the Great’s half-sister, Sophia Aleksevevna; and his first wife, Eudoxia Lopukhina and others.

After lunch, tour the Tretyakov Gallery, home of the world’s largest collection of Russian masterpieces. Here you will see ancient Russian icons and pre-revolutionary art, as well as the works of modern Russian artists including famous Russian female artists such as Lyubov Popova. Followed by shopping at Old Arbat Street or an optional visit to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art. The treasures of the Pushkin Museum include the famed “Treasure of Priam” of the Trojan War, unearthed by Heinrich Schliemann. Evening at leisure. (B)

The Golden Ring: Suzdal 2 nights-Sergiev Posad-Alexandrov-Vladimir

Day 4:  Travel to Suzdal visiting small picturesque towns of medieval Russia. Visit the center of Russian Orthodoxy – St Trinity Sergius Monastery in Sergiev Posad (Zagorskan).  This beautiful monastery has been an important Russian pilgrimage site for over 500 years. Crowned by iconic gold and blue onion domes, the monastery’s Cathedral of the Assumption is one of the most photographed cathedrals in all of Russia.  Stop for a traditional lunch.

Next, tour the medieval town of Alexandrov, the former seat of Ivan the Terrible. Here at Trinity Cathedral Ivan the Terrible married his third wife, Anna Sobakina and his fifth wife, Anna Vasilchikova.  Continue on to the town of Suzdal, known as the pearl of the Golden Ring.  We will stay at a traditional Russian-style 4-star hotel located within walking distance to attractions and restaurants. Iceland, known as the Land of Fire and Ice, is a natural wonderland that offers solo female travelers an extraordinary adventure. With its vast landscapes of towering waterfalls, majestic glaciers, and rugged terrains, Iceland is a dream destination for those seeking both serenity and exhilaration. The country’s safety, friendliness, and well-developed infrastructure make it perfect to be on this list of best solo travel destinations for women. Here’s a closer look at why chasing waterfalls and glaciers in Iceland should be at the top of your travel list in 2024.

The Allure of Iceland’s Waterfalls

Waterfalls are among Iceland’s most captivating natural features, with hundreds scattered across the island, each more stunning than the last. Here are some must-visit waterfalls for your Icelandic adventure:

Gullfoss (Golden Falls)

Gullfoss, located in the Haukadalur Valley, is one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Part of the famous Golden Circle tour, Gullfoss cascades in two stages into a rugged canyon, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring sight. The nearby visitor center provides insights into the waterfall’s history and geology, and there are several viewing platforms where you can experience the falls from different angles.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss offers a unique experience: you can walk behind the waterfall. As you step behind the curtain of water, the view is nothing short of magical, especially at sunset when the light plays off the mist. The trail can be slippery, so wear sturdy shoes, but the experience is well worth the effort. The nearby Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall tucked behind a narrow canyon, is also worth a visit.

Skógafoss, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, is located near the small village of Skógar. With a drop of 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, its sheer power is breathtaking. You can climb a steep staircase adjacent to the waterfall to reach a viewing platform at the top, offering spectacular views over the southern coastline. The area around Skógafoss is rich in hiking trails, including the famous Fimmvörðuháls trail.

In the remote Vatnajökull National Park lies Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Its immense flow rate and the thunderous roar of the water make it an unforgettable sight. The surrounding landscape is otherworldly, with basalt columns and rugged cliffs adding to the dramatic atmosphere. Dettifoss is accessible via hiking trails that offer stunning views of the waterfall from different vantage points.

Exploring Iceland’s Glaciers

Iceland’s glaciers are equally impressive, starkly contrasting the island’s geothermal activity. These massive ice formations provide a range of activities for adventurous solo travelers:

Vatnajökull Glacier

Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, covers about 8% of Iceland. The glacier is home to several ice caves, which are accessible through guided tours. Visiting an ice cave is a surreal experience, as you navigate through shimmering blue ice tunnels. The nearby Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is another highlight, where you can witness icebergs floating in a serene glacial lake, often accompanied by playful seals.

Langjökull Glacier

Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland, offers unique activities such as glacier hiking and snowmobiling. The Into the Glacier tour takes you into man-made ice tunnels within the glacier, providing a fascinating look at the ice from the inside. The nearby Húsafell area is perfect for exploring geothermal hot springs and lava fields.

Sólheimajökull Glacier

Easily accessible from the southern coast, Sólheimajökull is a popular destination for glacier hiking. Guided tours equip you with crampons and ice axes, allowing you to safely explore the glacier’s crevasses, ice sculptures, and moulins (glacier mills). The experience of walking on a glacier is both humbling and exhilarating, offering a unique perspective on Iceland’s icy landscapes.

Snæfellsjökull Glacier

Located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Snæfellsjökull is a glacier-capped volcano that inspired Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” The glacier is part of Snæfellsjökull National Park, which offers diverse landscapes including lava fields, black sand beaches, and dramatic cliffs. Hiking the glacier provides panoramic views of the peninsula and, on clear days, the distant Westfjords.

Practical Tips for Solo Travelers in Iceland

Check Weather Conditions

Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, with rapid changes even in summer. Always check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting out. Dress in layers and carry waterproof clothing to stay comfortable during your outdoor adventures.

Solo travelers often find that joining a surf school provides a sense of camaraderie and support. Greece, with its azure waters, sun-drenched islands, and ancient history, stands out as a top destination for solo female travelers. One of the most exhilarating experiences Greece offers is island hopping combined with snorkeling—a perfect adventure for those seeking to explore the beauty both above and below the surface. This section delves into the highlights, logistics, and tips for making the most of an island-hopping and snorkeling adventure in Greece.

The Greek Islands: A Diverse Tapestry

Greece boasts over 6,000 islands and islets, each with its unique charm and character. Among these, around 200 are inhabited, offering a diverse range of experiences. The most popular island groups for hopping and snorkeling include the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Ionian Islands, and the Sporades.

The Cyclades

The Cyclades are perhaps the most famous island group, known for their iconic white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and stunning beaches. Islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos offer a blend of vibrant nightlife, rich history, and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling.

The Dodecanese

Located closer to Turkey, the Dodecanese islands like Rhodes, Kos, and Symi are rich in medieval history and offer some of the best snorkeling spots in Greece. The waters here are teeming with marine life, and the underwater visibility is exceptional.

The Ionian Islands

On the western side of Greece, the Ionian Islands, including Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefalonia, boast lush landscapes and emerald waters. Snorkeling here reveals a different side of Greece, with dramatic underwater rock formations and vibrant sea life.

The Sporades

The Sporades, including islands like Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos, are known for their green landscapes and clear waters. These islands offer a more laid-back and less crowded experience, ideal for solo travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty.

Planning Your Island-Hopping Adventure

Island hopping in Greece requires some planning to ensure you maximize your time and experiences. Here are key considerations to keep in mind:

Itinerary and Transportation

Start by selecting the islands you wish to visit. A popular route in the Cyclades might include Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros, while in the Dodecanese, you might opt for Rhodes, Kos, and Symi. Ferries are the primary mode of transportation between islands, with frequent services during the summer months. Companies like Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways offer reliable services, and it’s advisable to book tickets in advance during peak season.

Accommodation

Each island offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious resorts. For solo travelers, staying in hostels or guesthouses can be a great way to meet fellow travelers. Websites like Booking.com and Hostel w orld provide a plethora of options to suit different budgets and preferences.

The best time for island hopping and snorkeling in Greece is between May and September. The weather is warm, and the sea is calm, providing ideal conditions for underwater exploration. June and September are particularly favorable for solo travelers, as they offer a balance between good weather, fewer crowds, and low peak rates.

Snorkeling Hotspots

Greece’s islands are dotted with fantastic snorkeling spots. Here are some top recommendations:

Santorini’s volcanic origins provide a unique underwater landscape. The caldera and nearby islets like Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are prime spots for snorkeling. The waters around these islets are rich in marine life, and the dramatic underwater terrain adds to the experience.

While known for its nightlife, Mykonos also offers excellent snorkeling. Lia Beach and Paradise Beach are popular spots where you can explore underwater rock formations and spot a variety of fish.

Paros is a gem for snorkeling enthusiasts. Kolymbithres Beach, with its unusual rock formations and clear waters, is perfect for underwater exploration. The nearby island of Antiparos also offers great snorkeling spots.

In the Dodecanese, Rhodes is a standout destination. Anthony Quinn Bay, named after the famous actor who fell in love with the spot during the filming of “The Guns of Navarone,” is one of the best snorkeling locations. The bay’s clear waters and abundant marine life make it a must-visit.

In the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia offers some of the best snorkeling opportunities. Myrtos Beach and the waters around the Melissani Cave are known for their stunning underwater scenery.

For those seeking a more tranquil experience, Alonissos in the Sporades is ideal. The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is home to the Mediterranean monk seal and offers pristine waters and diverse marine life.

Tips for Safe and Enjoyable Snorkeling

Safety and preparation are key to a successful snorkeling experience. Here are some tips to ensure you have a memorable and safe adventure:

Invest in quality snorkeling gear, including a mask, snorkel, and fins. If you book a snorkeling tour with a company, they typically provide your gear and local shops sell at decent rates.

Always snorkel with a buddy or inform someone of your plans if you’re going alone. Check weather conditions and water currents before heading out. Avoid touching or disturbing marine life, and be mindful of your surroundings to avoid accidents.

Stay hydrated and apply reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and the marine environment. Take breaks as needed to rest and rehydrate.

Respect the Environment

Snorkeling offers a unique opportunity to observe marine life up close. Always respect the underwater environment by not littering, avoiding contact with coral reefs, and following local guidelines and regulations.

For solo female travelers, mapping a route from Okinawa to Hokkaido offers a unique opportunity to experience the diverse cultures, climates, food, and attractions that Japan has to offer. This is a comprehensive guide to navigating this route, ensuring a memorable and smooth travel experience. I spent over 30 days mapping my route from Okinawa to Hokkaido and met a decent number of solo female travelers doing similar. Traveling for over 30 days is not a luxury most have, but the list below paints a decent picture of places to choose from if you decide to visit Japan.

Starting Point: Okinawa

1. Naha, Okinawa

Begin your journey in Naha, the vibrant capital of Okinawa Prefecture. Known for its rich Ryukyu heritage, Naha offers a unique blend of Japanese and indigenous culture. Start by exploring Shurijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that reflects the kingdom’s history. Don’t miss the Makishi Public Market for a taste of local cuisine, including Okinawan soba and fresh seafood.

2. Okinawa Island Exploration

Colombia’s Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida, is an ancient archaeological site that offers an unforgettable adventure for solo female travelers. Nestled deep within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range, this mystical city was once the heart of the Tairona civilization, predating Machu Picchu by several centuries. The journey to the Lost City is not just a hike; it’s an immersive experience that combines physical challenge, cultural enrichment, and natural beauty, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a unique and rewarding solo travel experience.

The Journey to the Lost City

Reaching the Lost City requires a multi-day trek through dense jungles, across rivers, and up steep inclines. This challenging hike typically takes four to six days, depending on the pace and the tour operator. The trek begins in the small village of Machete Pelao and covers approximately 44 kilometers (27 miles) round trip.

Day 1: The Adventure Begins

The first day of the trek usually involves a drive from Santa Marta to the starting point, Machete Pelao. From here, the adventure begins with a hike through lush forests and along winding paths. The initial segment is relatively easy, allowing trekkers to acclimate to the terrain and the humid climate. As you walk, you’ll pass by small farms and indigenous communities, providing a glimpse into the rural life of the region.

Day 2: Into the Heart of the Jungle

The second day takes you deeper into the jungle. The trail becomes more challenging with steeper inclines and rocky paths. You’ll cross several rivers, sometimes wading through the water, adding an element of excitement to the journey. The lush, verdant jungle teems with wildlife, and the sounds of birds and insects create a vibrant symphony that accompanies your hike.

Day 3: Reaching the Lost City

On the third day, you’ll reach the base of the final ascent to the Lost City. The last leg of the trek involves climbing over 1,200 stone steps, and ascending through thick vegetation. This part of the hike can be physically demanding, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort. As you emerge from the jungle, the ancient terraces of the Lost City come into view, shrouded in mist and surrounded by the towering Sierra Nevada mountains.

Exploring the Lost City

The Lost City, known locally as Teyuna, is a sprawling complex of terraces, plazas, and stone pathways. Built around 800 CE, it was a major urban center for the Tairona people, who inhabited the region long before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. The city is believed to have been abandoned during the Spanish conquest and remained hidden in the jungle until its rediscovery in the 1970s.

The Main Terrace

The central terrace is the heart of the Lost City, where ceremonial and administrative activities once took place. Standing here, you can almost feel the presence of the ancient inhabitants who once walked these paths. The terrace offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and jungle, a testament to the Tairona’s architectural ingenuity.

Stone Pathways and Staircases

The city is interconnected by a network of stone pathways and staircases, some of which have been painstakingly restored. These paths lead to various sections of the city, including residential areas, storage facilities, and additional terraces. Exploring these pathways gives you a sense of the city’s vastness and the sophisticated planning that went into its construction.

Indigenous Guides and Cultural Insights

One of the highlights of visiting the Lost City is the opportunity to be guided by indigenous Kogi or Wiwa guides, descendants of the Tairona. These guides provide invaluable insights into the history, culture, and spiritual significance of the site. Their stories and knowledge add a rich cultural dimension to the trek, deepening your appreciation of the Lost City and its heritage.

Practical Tips for Solo Female Travelers

Choose a Reputable Tour Operator

Several tour operators offer guided treks to the Lost City, and it’s essential to choose one with a good reputation for safety and quality. Look for operators who employ local guides, provide comprehensive support, and have positive reviews from past travelers. Group sizes and amenities can vary, so consider your preferences for comfort and adventure when selecting a tour.

Pack Appropriately

The trek involves hiking through challenging terrain and varying weather conditions. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a waterproof jacket. A good backpack with a hydration system is essential, as you’ll need to stay hydrated in the humid jungle. Don’t forget insect repellent, sunscreen, and a hat to protect against the sun.

Stay Fit and Prepared

The trek to the Lost City is physically demanding, so it’s important to be in good shape before embarking on the journey. Regular hiking, cardio workouts, and strength training will help you prepare for the challenges of the trail. Being physically prepared will enhance your enjoyment of the trek and reduce the risk of injury.

Embrace the Adventure

Solo travel is about embracing new experiences and stepping out of your comfort zone. The trek to the Lost City offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, history, and yourself. Be open to meeting fellow travelers, learning from your guides, and immersing yourself in the journey. The challenges you overcome along the way will make the destination even more rewarding.

For solo female travelers, it offers a chance to test your limits, discover hidden strengths, and gain a deeper understanding of Colombia’s rich heritage. This picturesque fishing village, with its whitewashed houses and stunning ocean views, has transformed into a vibrant destination that beautifully blends traditional Moroccan culture with modern surf vibes. The welcoming surf community ensures that even those traveling alone will quickly find camaraderie and support in the waves.

Beyond the beach, Taghazout boasts a burgeoning food scene that tantalizes the taste buds. The village is dotted with cozy cafes, beachside shacks, and rooftop restaurants offering a fusion of traditional Moroccan flavors and international cuisine. Freshly caught seafood is a highlight, with grilled fish, calamari, and prawns served with zesty salads and fragrant rice. Don’t miss out on trying a traditional Moroccan tagine, slow-cooked to perfection with a medley of vegetables, spices, and tender meat.

Exploring the narrow streets of Taghazout reveals local artisans and their crafts. Handmade jewelry, vibrant textiles, and intricate pottery provide perfect souvenirs and a glimpse into Morocco’s rich artistic heritage. The village’s relaxed pace of life, coupled with its stunning sunsets over the Atlantic, creates an idyllic setting for unwinding and reflecting.

Sahara Chases: An Adventure into the Desert

While Taghazout offers coastal serenity, the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert presents an entirely different kind of adventure. The journey from Taghazout to the Sahara is an exploration of Morocco’s diverse landscapes, taking you from the ocean’s edge through rugged mountains and verdant valleys to the golden sands of the world’s largest hot desert.

For solo female travelers, a trip to the Sahara is both thrilling and transformative. Guided tours and excursions are readily available, providing a safe and structured way to experience the desert’s majesty. Most tours depart from Marrakech, with options to join a group or arrange a private guide for a more personalized experience.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains, where winding roads offer breathtaking views of terraced fields, traditional Berber villages, and snow-capped peaks. The journey itself is an immersion into Morocco’s natural beauty and cultural richness, with opportunities to stop and explore along the way.

As you approach the Sahara, the landscape shifts dramatically to rolling dunes and vast, open spaces. Merzouga, a small village on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, serves as a gateway to the desert. Here, you’ll meet your guide and camel caravan for a trek into the dunes, an experience that feels like stepping back in time. Riding a camel through the Sahara is both serene and surreal, with the rhythmic sway of the camel’s gait and the vast silence of the desert creating a meditative journey.

Arriving at a desert camp, you’ll be welcomed with traditional Berber hospitality. The camps are equipped with comfortable tents and communal areas where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the desert. As night falls, the Sahara transforms into a stargazer’s paradise, with a canopy of stars that seems close enough to touch. Around the campfire, you’ll savor a traditional Moroccan meal, often accompanied by music and stories from the Berber guides, offering a deep connection to the culture and history of the desert.

Culinary Delights of the Desert

Moroccan cuisine is a feast for the senses, and the Sahara experience is no exception. Meals in the desert camps are a highlight, with chefs preparing dishes that showcase the rich flavors and fragrant spices of Moroccan cooking. One of the most iconic dishes you’ll encounter is the Berber tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat (often lamb or chicken), vegetables, and a blend of spices, all simmered to perfection in a conical clay pot. The result is a mouthwatering dish that is both hearty and aromatic.

Another must-try is Moroccan mint tea, known as “Berber whiskey.” This sweet, refreshing beverage is a staple of Moroccan hospitality and is traditionally served with a flourish. Watching the tea being poured from a height into small glasses is an art form in itself, and sipping this fragrant tea under the starlit desert sky is a quintessential part of the Sahara experience.

Breakfast in the desert is a delightful affair, often featuring fresh bread, honey, olives, and a variety of local pastries. These simple yet flavorful ingredients provide the perfect start to a day of exploration and adventure in the desert.

Embracing the Desert Adventure

Exploring the Sahara isn’t just about the landscapes; it’s about immersing yourself in the culture and traditions of the desert’s inhabitants. Many tours include visits to nomadic communities, where you can learn about the traditional way of life that has persisted for centuries. These encounters provide a unique insight into the resilience and adaptability of the people who call the Sahara home.

For the adventurous, there are opportunities to try sandboarding down the dunes or to take a 4×4 excursion deeper into the desert. Each activity offers a different perspective on the vastness and beauty of the Sahara.

As you conclude your desert adventure and return to Taghazout, you’ll carry with you memories of the contrasting experiences – the laid-back coastal charm and the awe-inspiring expanse of the desert. Morocco’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage make it a standout destination for solo female travelers, offering a journey that is both enriching and unforgettable.

Riham

It's a safe city, i've been here for 2 years and more, nothing bad happened before, there will be sometimes drunk men who like to overtalk, but the most of them are respectful and will not touch you.

In general, Moscow is the safest city in Russia, but just like in any other city, the possibility of a stolen wallet during rush hour on the subway cannot be ruled out. There is also police inaction sometimes. I lived in Paris, there are areas where it is better not to go even during the daytime. in Moscow there are no such dangerous areas, but just like in any other place, there is always a chance of running into a bad person or get some bad experience
