IHG® Rewards Club: Beginner’s guide to points

You’ve probably noticed that points are kind of a big deal for IHG® Rewards Club members. It’s just one of your several benefits, but for many, it’s an overwhelming favorite. Because those guests know that points equal rewards.

What are points?

Simply put, you earn them when you travel or participate in programs, and you redeem them however you like—hotel stays, gift cards, electronics…You can even choose from thousands of songs and eBooks, brand name clothing and household goods. Or use your points to bid on exclusive vacation packages with IHG Rewards Club Auctions.

Reward Nights are popular, obviously. Because vacations are better when your room is cash-free. (You can also reduce your rate by using a combination of Points & Cash. It’s a great way to travel for less, even if you don’t have enough points for the whole stay.)

How do points make my life better?

You can upgrade your playlist with music downloads for just 300 points. And you can find PointBreaks® Reward Nights for as little as 5,000. Plus, there are thousands of redemption options in the IHG® Rewards Club Catalog —and digital rewards , too. So there’s something for everyone.

You can also gift your points to friends or donate them to charity . And your points don’t expire as long as you stay active every year.

Bonus points vs. Base points

There are 2 kinds of points in IHG Rewards Club.

  • Bonus points are primarily earned through promotions and help you earn rewards.
  • Base points are rewarded for hotel stays, as well as several partner programs & other methods. In addition to being used for rewards, they count toward your Elite status & qualify you for member level upgrades.

How do you earn them?

The most adventurous way is to travel. You’ll earn on every stay. And as you advance from Club to Elite status, you’ll earn even faster—especially when you enroll in promotions, like  Accelerate .

Plus, there are special rates to help you earn more, like Bonus Points Packages , where you can add up to 5,000 points per stay. And Points Purchase options let you reach your rewards in an instant.

There are also partner program, like IHG® Rewards Club Dining , which rewards you for visiting select restaurants. You can register 5 credit cards and you don’t need to carry or show anything else. No fees either. Just pick from over 11,000 restaurants, bars or clubs and enjoy your meal. You even earn on take-out, delivery and the tip.

Car services, like Uber, Hertz & Groundlink are another great way to earn. Or on cruises when you feel like hitting the high seas.

So, you see it’s not just about staying, it’s about having fun.

Here are more ways you can earn*:

Partner offers:

  • Hertz : Up to 30% off, plus 1,500 points per rental & up to 500 points per day
  • IHG® Rewards Club Dining : Register your cards to earn at over 11,000 restaurants
  • Uber : 2,000 points for your first ride, plus get your first ride free (up to $20)
  • Dollar/Thrifty : earn 125 points per day
  • Cruise : earn 20,000 points

Points products:

  • Points & Cash : Stay for less by combining points with cash
  • Bonus Points Packages : Earn up to 5,000 points per stay
  • Points Purchase : Instantly bridge the gap to your next reward
  • Holiday Inn Club Vacation Package : Vacation packages from $199, plus 10,000 points

Most of these options are available to you every time you stay—and there are several ways to earn right from your home. So even if you don’t travel often, you’ll still enjoy the benefits of being a member.

How do I get started?

First, you join IHG® Rewards Club . Then, check our offers page for the most up to date information. Whenever you’re ready, choose the options that work best for you. Welcome to the club.

*All offers subject to change and availability. Please check individual terms & conditions prior to purchasing.

All the Free Travel Perks You Can Earn As an IHG Rewards Club Member (Video)

ihg rewards cruises

Like airline miles and credit card points , hotel points are an essential part of any traveler's loyalty strategy, whether you spend a few nights (or a few dozen) in hotels each year.

You can earn and redeem hotel points for stays around the world, but many hotel companies also field co-branded credit cards that help you rack points up even faster, enjoy elite-style benefits during your stays, and even receive free anniversary nights in some cases.

With over 5,700 hotels in nearly 100 countries across the globe, InterContinental Hotels Group is one of the largest hotel companies in the world. Here's how to make the most of its rewards program.

What is IHG Rewards Club?

InterContinental Hotels Group is a massive entity that now comprises 16 distinct brands under its umbrella.

Its luxury labels include InterContinental Hotels themselves, plus Regent Hotels & Resorts and Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas , which it recently acquired (and which has not yet joined the loyalty program). IHG's boutique brands include pet-friendly Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, quirky Hotel Indigo, and fitness-focused EVEN Hotels. The workhorses in its stables include Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn's various iterations, and Candlewood Suites, among others.

IHG Rewards Club is the loyalty program for all of them. Though it might be hard to keep track of so many different chains at first glance, in the end, it means it is easier than ever to earn IHG Rewards Club points wherever you happen to be traveling in the world, no matter what type of budget you have.

How to Earn IHG Rewards Club Points

The fastest way to earn IHG Rewards Club points is to stay at associated hotels. Members earn 10 base points per dollar spent on room rates and other purchases like dining and spa treatments at all of IHG's brands except Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites, where you only earn five points per dollar. IHG Rewards Club points expire after 12 months of no account activity, so you must either earn or redeem every year to keep your points alive.

To help with that, members can earn even more points on everyday spending with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card from Chase. Its sign-up bonus varies, but usually ranges from 80,000 to 140,000 points, which is enough for several free nights at most of the company's hotels, and nearly enough for two nights even at top-tier luxury properties like the InterContinental Hong Kong or the InterContinental Paris – Le Grand .

The card earns 10 bonus points per dollar on IHG purchases and two points per dollar at gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants. It earns a single point per dollar on everything else. Every year you renew it and pay the $89 annual fee, you receive a certificate that can be redeemed for a free night at hotels costing up to 40,000 points per night. Cardholders enjoy automatic Platinum elite status with perks like room upgrades and bonus points, and can take advantage of a fourth night free on award stays of four nights or more, which is a generous discount. The card waives foreign transaction fees and will even reimburse you for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee once every four years.

As a last resort, you could consider purchasing points , which normally costs $13.50 per 1,000, but this pricing is exorbitant, so avoid it if possible.

How to Redeem IHG Rewards Club Points

IHG Rewards Club members can redeem their points in a variety of ways, including for hotel stays. Free award nights mostly cost between 10,000 and 70,000 points each, depending on the hotel. For example, the Holiday Inn Amsterdam costs 30,000 points per night (instead of $130 to $280), while the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa costs 70,000 points per night (instead of around $1,150).

Sometimes rates that are a combination of cash and points are also available. A night at the InterContinental Sydney , for instance, costs around $250 to $500, or 65,000 points. But there are also options to reserve it for 60,000 points plus $30; 55,000 points plus $60; 50,000 points plus $89; or 45,000 points plus $115, in case you want to spend a little cash and save some points for a later redemption. This type of mixed redemption does not tend to yield a lot of value for your points, so it's better to reserve a stay either all with cash or all with points.

Aside from award nights, IHG Rewards Club members can redeem points for gift cards , digital entertainment such as eBooks and movie rentals, or merchandise including golf equipment, kitchen appliances and magazines. However, you only get around $0.25 to $0.05 in value with such redemptions, so don't be tempted.

IHG Rewards Club Partners

IHG Rewards Club has several interesting partners for both earning and redeeming points. The program is a transfer partner of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. If you have a credit card that earns Ultimate Rewards points, such as the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Ink Business Preferred, you can transfer points at a ratio of one Ultimate Rewards point to one IHG Rewards Club point instantaneously, which is a fast and simple way to top up your account. Note that you cannot transfer IHG Rewards Club points back into Ultimate Rewards points.

IHG Rewards Club members can also score discounts and bonus points by booking car rentals through one of the program's agency partners and applying IHG-specific coupon codes.

By booking an activity through the IHG Trip Extras portal , such as guided tours and day excursions, you can earn 1,000 bonus points. Members who sign up for the IHG Rewards Club Dining program can earn 1,000 bonus points for spending $30 within 30 days at any of the thousands of participating restaurants around the country, and then earn between one and eight points per dollar on dining after that.

Members can convert IHG Rewards Club points into airline miles with 40 partners including Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United. The conversion ratio with most airlines is 10,000 IHG points to 2,000 airline miles, so you are spending five hotel points for every airline mile you end up with.

Alternatively, members can opt to earn airline miles with over 40 partners instead of hotel points on their stays. As an example, you could earn two American Airlines AAdvantage miles per dollar spent at most IHG hotels, or 500 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles per stay.

Elite Status Tiers and Benefits

IHG Rewards Club members who spend a certain number of nights at IHG properties each calendar year can earn elite status, which confers benefits such as room upgrades, in-room spa credits at some properties, bonus points-earning opportunities, free drinks, and more. Paid stays as well as award nights count toward elite qualification.

The program currently has three levels of elite status, starting with Gold, which you earn by staying 10 qualifying nights or earning 10,000 elite-qualifying points ($1,000 hotel spending). Gold status confers 10% bonus points on stays, late check-out, priority check-in lines and a welcome amenity.

The next tier is Platinum status, which is earned with 40 qualifying nights or 40,000 base points ($4,000 at IHG hotels) in a calendar year, but is also a standard benefit of the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. Members at this level earn 50% bonus points (so 15 points per dollar spent at hotels), plus a better shot at room upgrades, guaranteed room availability 72 hours out, and the ability to rollover elite-qualifying nights above and beyond the elite tier you earn from one year to the next to get a jump on your status in the following year.

The top tier is Spire Elite, which requires spending 75 nights or earning 75,000 points ($7,500 spend) in a calendar year. At this level, you enjoy 100% bonus points on stays (so 20 points per dollar), the best chance at room upgrades, and better check-in amenities.

As an IHG Rewards Club member, you can also purchase InterContinental Ambassador membership for $200 or 40,000 points per year to enjoy benefits specifically at the 200 or so InterContinental Hotels & Resorts around the world. The perks for this program include a guaranteed one-category room upgrade, one free weekend night on a stay of two nights or more each year, Platinum status with IHG Rewards Club in general, guaranteed 4 p.m. late check-out, up to $20 in restaurant and bar credits for every stay plus a general 15% discount on food and beverage purchases.

Pros and Cons of IHG Rewards Club

IHG Rewards Club has plenty of features to recommend it. The group's global footprint is enormous, with over 5,700 hotels around the world where members can earn and redeem their points. The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card from Chase is also a great all-round travel rewards card thanks to its bonus earning potential and perks like a free annual award night plus Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee reimbursement.

As for drawbacks, hotel awards can be expensive, ranging up to 70,000 points per night just for standard rooms. Although the company is beefing up its luxury portfolio with acquisitions like Regent Hotels and Six Senses, the bulk of its hotels are more middle-of-the-road options like Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, which means you might not be able to redeem your points for world-class stays at aspirational properties.

How to Sign Up

Joining IHG Rewards Club is free and only takes a moment. Just being a member will get you complimentary internet when staying at IHG properties, so you might as well sign up here.

IHG Milestone Rewards: Earn confirmable suite upgrades, points and more

Katie Genter

Editor's Note

In 2022, IHG launched its new IHG One Rewards program . One compelling aspect of this program is the ability to earn IHG Milestone Rewards for every 10 nights you stay, starting at just 20 nights in a calendar year.

You can earn bonus points, food and beverage rewards, confirmable suite upgrades and even an annual lounge membership as Milestone Rewards. Here's what you need to know about IHG Milestone Rewards.

What are IHG Milestone Rewards?

IHG Milestone Rewards are perks you earn each calendar year based on the nights you stay with IHG. Specifically, you'll earn Milestone Rewards every 10 nights, starting at just 20 nights and going through 100 nights. Any nights that are elite qualifying, including award nights, will count. However, rollover nights from the previous calendar year don't count toward earning IHG Milestone Rewards.

Here are the IHG Milestone Rewards you can earn as you hit the following milestones each calendar year (you can choose one at each level except at 40 and 70 nights, which get two):

  • 20 nights : 5,000 bonus points, two $20 food and beverage rewards or one confirmable suite upgrade
  • 30 nights : 5,000 bonus points or two $20 food and beverage rewards
  • 40 nights (choose two): 10,000 bonus points, five $20 food and beverage rewards, one confirmable suite upgrade (limit one) or one annual lounge membership (limit one)
  • 50 nights : 10,000 bonus points or five $20 food and beverage rewards
  • 60 nights : 10,000 bonus points or five $20 food and beverage rewards
  • 70 nights (choose two): 10,000 bonus points, five $20 food and beverage rewards, two confirmable suite upgrades (limit one) or one annual lounge membership (limit one)
  • 80 nights : 10,000 bonus points or five $20 food and beverage rewards
  • 90 nights : 10,000 bonus points or five $20 food and beverage rewards
  • 100 nights : 10,000 bonus points or five $20 food and beverage rewards

You might be wondering what some of these Milestone Rewards entail. If so, here's a look at the details of each IHG Milestone Rewards option based on the IHG member terms and conditions .

Bonus points

Bonus points are a straightforward reward option that you can select at each level. If you choose bonus points, IHG will deposit the points into your account. Based on TPG's valuations , 5,000 IHG One Rewards points are worth $25, and 10,000 IHG One Rewards points are worth $50.

Food and beverage rewards

Similar to bonus points, you can choose food and beverage rewards at each milestone. Each food and beverage award voucher is worth up to $20.

ihg rewards cruises

Once you select food and beverage rewards at a milestone, you can redeem these rewards against food and beverage charges during a stay. However, you can't use food and beverage rewards for:

  • Vending machines
  • Third-party food deliveries (such as Uber Eats)
  • Restaurants that do not allow charges to a guest room bill
  • Taxes on minibar charges
  • Stays as part of a group, package tour or convention where a third party is paying

You can redeem food and beverage rewards at all IHG brands except Holiday Inn Club Vacations and IHG Army Hotels . You also can't use food and beverage rewards during stays at Iberostar Beachfront Resorts , Mr & Mrs Smith properties and InterContinental Alliance Resorts in Las Vegas and Macao.

Most properties allow you to redeem vouchers to cover gratuities on food and beverage transactions. Know, though, that you can only use each voucher once, so be sure your food and beverage charges are greater than the value of the food and beverage vouchers. You'll earn IHG points on your food and beverage balance after vouchers are applied.

Your food and beverage vouchers will expire 12 months after you select them as a Milestone Reward. Finally, note that food and beverage rewards aren't transferable, so you can only apply them to your room bill.

Confirmable suite upgrade

You can choose one confirmable suite upgrade after staying 20 and 40 nights in a calendar year. Additionally, you can choose two confirmable suite upgrades after staying 70 nights in a calendar year. Although you can choose two rewards after staying 40 and 70 nights in a calendar year, you can only select confirmable suite upgrades once at each milestone.

ihg rewards cruises

You can apply a confirmable suite upgrade to most directly booked rates, including reward nights and select corporate and package rates. However, you can't use a confirmable suite upgrade if you booked one of the following:

  • Group rates, package tours or convention stays where a third party is paying
  • Stays using an IHG free night certificate or InterContinental Ambassador complimentary weekend night (IHG plans to eventually make these stays eligible)
  • Non-qualified rates (such as wholesale rates and those booked through online travel agencies)
  • Employee rates
  • Prepaid rates for which a deposit is already applied
  • Some hotel-defined packages
  • Stays through https://www.anaihghotels.co.jp/ or Japan hotels' independent sites

You can use a confirmable suite upgrade to upgrade one room to an entry-level suite (or a premium room if a suite isn't available) on a stay of up to five nights. You must contact IHG customer care between 14 days and 24 hours before check-in to apply a suite upgrade to a reservation. However, note that suite inventory is unavailable at some properties and limited at others.

Suppose you cancel your stay after applying a confirmable suite upgrade to your reservation. In that case, IHG will redeposit your upgrade into your rewards wallet if you cancel before the time frame defined by the hotel's cancellation policy.

Confirmable suite upgrades expire 12 months after being selected through the IHG Milestone Rewards program. These upgrades are nontransferable and can only be applied to the member's room. You can use confirmable suite upgrades at most IHG properties except:

  • Avid Hotels
  • Atwell Suites
  • IHG Army Hotels
  • Holiday Inn Club Vacations
  • IHG Residences
  • Mr & Mrs Smith properties
  • InterContinental Alliance Resorts (Las Vegas and Macao)
  • Iberostar Beachfront Resorts

Finally, if you use a confirmable suite upgrade to secure a club room, you won't get club-level perks as part of your upgrade . You also can't stack a confirmable suite upgrade with a guaranteed upgrade (like you'd get with InterContinental Ambassador ). Any upgrade above the room secured with a confirmable suite upgrade is at the hotel's discretion.

Annual lounge membership

You can select an annual lounge membership at the 40-night or 70-night milestone. If you do so, you'll get a lounge membership through the end of the current calendar year, plus an additional 12 months. So, if you select a lounge membership as a Milestone Reward in January, you'll keep it through the end of the following year.

ihg rewards cruises

If you have a lounge membership, you and a guest will get access to the hotel's club lounge and amenities within the lounge when staying at IHG properties with a club lounge. You must be on a qualifying stay, although IHG's member terms and conditions state that reward nights, free nights and stays booked through an online travel agency are eligible. However, stays at Mr & Mrs Smith properties and InterContinental Alliance Resorts in Las Vegas and Macao aren't eligible.

You'll get access during your stay or until checkout, though properties can restrict your access due to "renovations, closures, or other facility limitations." Additionally, lounge membership does not get you club lounge amenities or services beyond the physical lounge.

Redeeming IHG Milestone Rewards

Once you reach a milestone, IHG will send you an email. This email will state the date by which you must select your Milestone Reward and provide a link you can click to select your reward.

ihg rewards cruises

You can also check your progress toward earning another Milestone Reward when logged in to your IHG account. For example, my IHG Milestone Rewards summary shows that I need to stay 13 more nights this calendar year to earn a 20-night Milestone Reward.

ihg rewards cruises

I'd recommend waiting until the last minute to choose IHG Milestone Rewards unless you want to choose bonus points, a confirmable suite upgrade to apply to a stay in the next 14 days or a lounge membership you plan to use before the end of the year. After all, food and beverage rewards, confirmable suite upgrades and annual lounge memberships expire based on when you select them.

Which IHG Milestone Rewards are best?

There's no right answer to which IHG Milestone Rewards are best. That's part of the value: You can choose what's most valuable to you.

It's difficult to put a value on a confirmable suite upgrade or an annual lounge membership, as these benefits depend on how you'll use them and how much value they'll add to your stay. The value of an annual lounge membership also depends on how many times you'll get IHG club lounge access as a benefit of your membership.

ihg rewards cruises

Even the choice of bonus points or food and beverage rewards isn't clear-cut. Although TPG only values IHG One Rewards points at 0.5 cents each, I can usually get closer to 1 cent of value when redeeming IHG points .

I can't tell you which IHG Milestone Rewards will be best for you, but here's how I rank the choices at each milestone:

  • 20 nights : My first choice would be a confirmable suite upgrade since it would be nice to guarantee a suite for one stay in the next 12 months. My second choice would be 5,000 bonus points since I value these points at about $50, and my third choice would be two $20 food and beverage rewards since these are worth up to $40.
  • 30 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.
  • 40 nights : My first choice in some years would be an annual lounge membership. However, I currently have an annual lounge membership valid through the end of the next calendar year, so choosing another one this year wouldn't provide additional value. My second choice would be a confirmable suite upgrade since if I stay 40 nights each year, I can likely get good value from another confirmed upgrade. My third choice would be 10,000 bonus points since I value these points at about $100, but I can get more value on some redemptions. My fourth choice would be five $20 food and beverage rewards since this reward is worth up to $100.
  • 50 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.
  • 60 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.
  • 70 nights : My first choice would be two confirmable suite upgrades since it's the most valuable option at this milestone. My second choice would be an annual lounge membership if I didn't select one as a 40-night Milestone Reward and didn't already have one valid through the end of the next calendar year. My third choice would be 10,000 bonus points since I value these points at about $100, but I can get more value on some redemptions. And my fourth choice would be five $20 food and beverage rewards since this reward is worth up to $100.
  • 80 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.
  • 90 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.
  • 100 nights : My first choice would be points, and my second choice would be food and beverage rewards for the same reason as above.

Bottom line

The launch of the IHG One Rewards program and its Milestone Rewards in 2022 have encouraged me and my husband to stay with IHG more. The improved perks have also encouraged one of us to strive for Diamond Elite status every year.

Previously, we'd both relied on the Platinum Elite status provided as an automatic cardholder perk of the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and didn't worry about accruing a specific number of nights with IHG each year. But with the addition of breakfast as a welcome amenity choice for Diamond Elite members and Milestone Rewards, there's now a compelling argument for us to focus our IHG stays on one of our accounts.

Even if you don't plan to earn IHG elite status , you may still want to aim to stay at least 20 nights each year to earn a Milestone Reward. After all, you can select 5,000 bonus points, two $20 food and beverage rewards or one confirmable suite upgrade after staying just 20 nights in a calendar year.

Additionally, Iberostar Resorts is now integrated into the IHG One Rewards program, which means members can earn and redeem IHG points at over 40 participating locations.

Hot Tip: If you need a standard hotel with some basic amenities (perhaps a free breakfast buffet), you can book a Holiday Inn Express . But if you want to enjoy a few nights in luxury, try an InterContinental or Kimpton  property.

There are several other ways to earn bonus IHG points :

  • Bonus points packages: Book specials to earn bonus points instead of a base stay. These offers can be the cheapest way to buy IHG points.
  • Point promotions: Enroll in limited-time IHG promotions to earn bonus points at participating hotel brands and on multiple stays.
  • Travel credit cards: A co-brand IHG credit card earns IHG points on every purchase. You can also transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to your IHG account with participating credit cards.
  • IHG Rewards Dine & Earn: You can earn up to 8 points per $1 (for VIP members) at participating restaurants. It’s free to join this loyalty program and 1,000 bonus points on your first $30 purchase.
  • Partner benefits: Receive bonus points through travel and dining partners like Grubhub, OpenTable, Mr & Mrs Smith, and Hertz.
  • Purchase IHG points: You can also buy up to 150,000 IHG points each year. This can be a good move when the loyalty club runs sales that match your purchase amount.

In addition to earning points each time you pay cash for a stay or support an IHG partner, you can also transfer points and earn frequent flyer miles.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG

In addition to earning IHG points through the hotel loyalty program, you can also transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to your IHG account in 1,000-point increments and without transaction fees.

Currently, three credit cards earning Chase Ultimate Rewards let you transfer credit card points to IHG.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns up to 5x points per dollar spent on travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards and gives you a 10% anniversary gift of the total points you earned in the prior year.

Other benefits include a 25% travel redemption bonus for booking travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards and an annual $50 hotel statement credit.

The annual fee is $95 for the first card and $0 for secondary cards.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a premium travel rewards credit card that’s best for frequent flyers. Purchases earn up to 10x Ultimate Rewards on travel (after earning the $300 travel credit each year) and each point is worth 50% more when booking award travel through Chase.

Premium benefits include a $300 annual travel statement credit , Priority Pass Select lounge access, and Global Entry / TSA PreCheck application fee credits.

The annual fee is $550 plus $75 per authorized user.

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

Small business owners carrying the Chase Ink Business Preferred can get a 25% travel redemption bonus. You can also earn up to 3x on business purchases like online advertising, shipping purchases, and travel.

The annual fee is $95 for the first card and $0 for additional employee cards.

Unfortunately, the other Ink Business credit cards with no annual fee don’t support point transfers. Neither does the Freedom family of cash back rewards cards.

Earning Airline Miles Instead of IHG Points

You may decide to join IHG to earn frequent flyer miles on your hotel stays.

As airline miles can be more valuable than hotel points, this earning strategy may not be as farfetched as you think. In addition, you can easily change your earning preference in your IHG member profile.

Most IHG stays earn 2x airline miles except for Staybridge and Candlewood Suites stays only earning 1x.

Some carriers may only award 1x miles on Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express stays, too. Some carriers may award less than 1x miles for certain hotels, so check before booking.

Most domestic and international airlines participate, including:

  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • United Airlines
  • British Airways

If you believe you’re going to redeem your IHG points for flights, it’s better to earn miles from the beginning. If you decide to transfer your hotel points, the conversion ratio is 10,000 IHG points for 2,000 air miles.

Pick Your Promotion (Through December 31, 2022)

Through December 31, 2022, IHG is allowing loyalty members to pick how they want to earn bonus points . Here are the two choices:

  • 2,000 Bonus Points for Every Two Nights
  • 10,000 Bonus Points for Every Four Nights

The choice is yours, and you only get to make it once. Which option you pick depends on how many nights you expect to stay at IHG® Hotels & Resorts through the remainder of 2022.

Redeeming IHG Points

IHG Holiday Inn Orlando

You can redeem your points for IHG rewards nights and a couple of other non-travel rewards.

IHG Reward Nights

The easiest and most valuable redemption option can be rewards nights within the IHG portfolio.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Your points are usually worth 0.6 cents for IHG nights. This rate is competitive with most hotel programs. Periodically, you can find deals where each point is worth between 1.0 and 1.6 cents.
  • Most mid-tier brands require 15,000 to 35,000 points per night. Relevant brands include Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites, and Candlewood Suites.
  • Luxury brands usually cost between 30,000 and 50,000 points . These brands include InterContental, Hotel Indigo, and Crowne Plaza.
  • Can book award nights up to 50 weeks in advance. Reward night rates start appearing 50 weeks before check-in. Prices are variable and will fluctuate so you may check prices on several days to wait for the best deal.

IHG no longer publishes an award chart. Instead, they tie the number of points needed to the nightly cash rate.

Some of the reward night pricing factors include:

  • Day of the week

Rewards nights require between 10,000 and 100,000 points per night. In general, you can expect to pay between 11,000 and 45,000 points.

While there are no blackout dates, hotels may sell out of award nights for your desired travel dates. Thankfully, most destinations have multiple IHG hotels but you may need to either pay more points or pick a less desirable property if you don’t want to pay cash.

Points and Cash

If you don’t have enough points to book a night, you can also pay with points and cash. You will redeem as few as 5,000 points and pay cash for the rest.

While you can conserve points, the cash requirements can be more than you’re willing to spend.

Transfer IHG Points to Airlines

You can transfer your points to the IHG Rewards partner airlines. In most programs, every 10,000 IHG points convert to 2,000 frequent flyer miles. That’s a mediocre 5:1 transfer ratio.

A better alternative can be earning frequent flyer miles instead of IHG points on paid stays by switching your earning preference when logged in your account.

Transfer IHG Points to another IHG Member

You can also transfer your points to another member. in 1,000-point increments.

While you pay $5 per 1,000 points, it can be cheaper than buying points ($13.50 per 1,000 points) when you need just a few more to book a reward night.

Gift card redemptions start at 5,500 points for a $10 reward. Your points are only worth $0.002 for these retail and restaurant rewards which may not be worth it.

As you may receive a physical gift card, it can take up to four weeks to arrive by mail.

We only recommend using this method if your points are going to expire and you have no other way to use them.

Digital Rewards

Digital rewards are another easy way to redeem a small points balance.

Some of your options include:

  • eNewspapers

The cheapest redemptions start at roughly 1,000 points for single issues of digital magazines. Movie rentals start at 1,700 points.

IHG Credit Cards

There are currently two IHG Rewards credit cards available for consumers. There is also one for business owners.

The IHG status levels are Club, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, and Diamond Elite in ascending order. New members start at the Club tier and must earn qualifying points or nights to earn elite status.

To have elite status, you will need to earn a minimum number of qualifying points or nights each calendar year (January 1 to December 31). The tier requirements are: Silver Elite: 10 nights Gold Elite: 20 nights or 40,000 points Platinum Elite: 40 nights or 60,000 points Diamond Elite: 70 nights or 120,000 points

Getting approved for the IHG ®  Rewards Premier Credit Card gives you automatic Platinum Elite status. The IHG® Rewards Traveler Credit Card gives you automatic Silver Elite status. IHG occasionally offers status matches if you have elite status with Hilton Honors, Marriot Bonvoy, or similar programs.

Points you earn from IHG-related purchases or travel and dining partners count toward Gold, Platinum, or Spire Elite status.

Qualifying nights include are for leisure or business trips at IHG hotels and resorts. Many discounted rates are eligible too. Reward nights that you pay for with points or points and cash can also apply toward elite status for next year.

You can earn IHG points by paying cash for IHG hotel nights, making travel and dining partners purchases, and using a co-brand IHG credit card.

IHG reward nights require between 10,000 and 100,000 points per night. So, on average, you can expect to pay between 10,000 and 45,000 points. Most properties also offer a points and cash payment option that only requires 5,000 points.

Points are usually worth between 0.4 and 0.7 cents for reward nights.

IHG points for Club members expire after 12 months of earning or redemption inactivity.  Points don’t expire for Elite members.

The Vacationer’s Final Thoughts

The point redemption values are competitive with most domestic hotel programs. However, the variable pricing model can make it challenging to predict the number of points you may need.

The program offers two consumer co-brand credit cards and one business option. Each card has many attractive perks like automatic elite status and the 4th night free on four-night stays. Depending on how many nights you stay at IHG hotels, one of the cards may be worth holding if you want fast-track elite status to maximize your IHG benefits easily.

Introduction to IHG

The Intercontinental Hotels Group has 19 hotel brands and operates more than 6,000 hotels worldwide, ranging from the eponymous InterContinental Hotels and Resorts and the luxurious Regent or Six Senses Resorts to the ubiquitous Holiday Inn and Staybridge Suites brands.

IHG Rewards points are a valuable travel rewards currency if you know how to use them. Points can be redeemed for hotel stays, flights, activities, and a host of other travel-related purchases.

Joining IHG Rewards

It's well worth being a part of the IHG Rewards program, even if you don't stay with the chain very often. Enrollment is free, and members get perks such as complimentary Wi-Fi, no blackout dates, award nights that count toward elite status, a dedicated concierge, and members-only special rates.

How to earn and accumulate IHG points

IHG members earn points on hotel stays, and can also accumulate IHG points with hotel co-branded credit cards, or from other credit cards that earn transferrable points.

IHG has two main categories of points:

  • Non-elite-qualifying bonus points, which help you earn rewards via special promotions
  • Elite-qualifying base points, which you can redeem for rewards, upgrades, and maintaining elite status

You can generally earn base points by staying at IHG properties and by booking through IHG's various travel, dining, and shopping partners. Here's a look at some of the best ways to earn IHG points.

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card

You can earn 140,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening with the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card. It's worth around $910 in stays, according to Business Insider's points and miles valuations .

The annual fee is $99, but the card's travel benefits can more than offset the cost.

Staying at IHG properties earns you up to 26x points, you'll earn 5x points on eligible travel, dining, and gas stations purchases, and 3x points on all other purchases. The card comes with automatic Platinum elite status, and offers a free anniversary night certificate each year, valid for use at any IHG hotel worldwide that costs up to 40,000 points per night — with the option to top up the certificate with points for more expensive hotels.

With the card, you'll also get the fourth reward night free when you redeem three or more nights, a credit of up to $100 toward the Global Entry, TSA PreCheck , or NEXUS application fee, up to $50 per year in United Travel Bank cash, 10,000 bonus IHG points and a $100 statement credit each account anniversary year you spend $20,000 on purchases (and make one additional purchase at least one day after you spend $20,000), and solid travel and purchase protections.

Here's our IHG One Rewards Premier credit card review with all the details.

IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card

The IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card offers a welcome bonus of 80,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Based on our valuations, that's worth around $520 in hotel stays.

This card doesn't come with the bells and whistles of the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card; for example, you won't receive a free night certificate each year on your card anniversary. However, if you only stay with IHG occasionally or are completely against paying an annual fee, it's a decent option.

Cardholders earn up to 17x points when they stay at IHG properties, plus 3x points on utilities, internet, cable, phone, select streaming services, dining, and gas, and 2x points on all other purchases. You'll also get a fourth reward night free when you redeem points for stays of at least three nights, Automatic IHG Silver elite status with an upgrade to Gold elite status after spending $20,000 on purchases in a calendar year and making one additional purchase, and 10,000 bonus points when you spend at least $10,000 and make one additional purchase with the card.

Cardholders earn up to 26x points at IHG hotels, 5x points on travel and at gas stations, dining, social media and search engine advertising, and at office supply stores, and 3 points per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

The card comes with similar benefits to the personal IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, including an anniversary free night award worth up to 40,000 points. One additional perk is another free night award after spending $60,000 on purchases and making one additional purchase in a calendar year.

If you have one of the Chase IHG Rewards credit cards, you'll earn an extra 10 points per dollar with the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card, or 5 points per dollar with the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card.

Earn more with IHG Business Rewards

If you're constantly booking meetings, conferences, weddings, business trips, and other events for someone else, IHG Business Rewards lets you earn 3 points per dollar on accommodations, meetings, and events. Earn IHG points through elite status

Earning elite status with IHG can lead to even more benefits if you travel frequently. As mentioned before, IHG Rewards Club members get complimentary Wi-Fi, members-only rates, a dedicated concierge, no blackout dates, and award nights that count toward elite status. We'll discuss each status tier in the section below.

Elite Status Membership Levels and Benefits

Holding IHG elite status automatically accelerates the number of points you can earn with every stay. IHG Rewards adds a multiplier for every dollar you spend, allowing you to rack up points at a much faster rate than you would if you never tracked your stays with this chain.

Club Member

You're automatically an IHG Club Member as soon as you sign up for an IHG Rewards account. Club members earn points even when staying at an IHG property on points, and don't have any blackout dates for booking reward nights. They also get free Internet at IHG hotels, and enjoy late check-out privileges at 2 p.m. when available.

Silver Elite

You'll automatically receive Silver Elite status if you have the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card. Otherwise, you can earn this status tier after 10 completing qualifying night stays. Silver Elites earn 20% more points on stays and get priority check-in in addition to all of the Club Member benefits listed above.

Your IHG points won't expire after you earn Silver (or higher) IHG status; otherwise, points expire after 12 months of inactivity for IHG members without status.

Gold Elites earn this status after staying 20 qualifying nights or earning 40,000 qualifying IHG points in a year. They'll have all the benefits of Silver Elites, but earn 40% more points per stay and can roll over credit for nights stayed toward next year's status.

Platinum Elite

Platinum Elites get all the benefits of Gold Elite status, earn a 60% points bonus on stays, and get complimentary room upgrades when available, reward night discounts, guaranteed room availability, a welcome amenity at check-in, and early check-in subject to availability.

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card cardholders receive instant IHG Platinum Elite status . Without one of these cards, you'd have to stay 40 qualifying nights or earn 60,000 qualifying points to qualify for IHG Platinum.

Diamond Elite

Diamond Elite status comes with all of the Platinum Elite status benefits above, earn 100% more points per stay, and get a complimentary status upgrade to Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star status. They also have access to a dedicated Diamond Elites customer support line. Earning Diamond Elite status normally requires 70 qualifying nights or 120,000 qualifying points in a year.

InterContinental lovers can also pay $200 to become part of the InterContinental Ambassador  program, which offers instant Platinum Elite status and benefits like late 4 p.m. check-out, complimentary weekend nights, guaranteed room upgrades, premium Wi-Fi, free mineral water, and a $20 bar and restaurant credit per stay.

Kimpton Inner Circle

If you're lucky enough to be invited, Kimpton Inner Circle gives you all the perks of IHG Diamond Elite status so you can earn 100% more points for your stay, and adds unique benefits like a free night at the newest Kimpton hotel and a special treat from the chef at Kimpton restaurants. Amenity fees are waived, an upgrade to the next category is guaranteed, and there's a VIP customer service hotline just in case.

Redeeming and maximizing IHG Rewards

IHG doesn't have an award chart — instead, the number of points required for a free night varies by property, season, and date. You can expect to pay 10,000 to 70,000 points per night at most hotels, although a few high-end resorts charge up to 100,000 points per night.

If you choose to use IHG points for other redemptions, like merchandise or events, you'll usually get a lower value than if you redeemed points for an award stay.

Redeem IHG points for dream vacations

You can use your IHG points to stay at some of the most luxurious hotels and resorts in the world, whether you're in search of a romantic getaway, family vacation, solo travel escape, or dream honeymoon. Here are a few examples:

  • InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora (70,000 points per night)
  • Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa (70,000 points per night)
  • Kimpton Dewitt Amsterdam (58,000 points per night)
  • Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island (32,000 points per night)

Stretch your savings with Points & Cash

If you'd rather make your points last, you can make the most of your redemption by using Points & Cash to pay for your award nights. This benefit lets you book stays for as low as 5,000 points per night plus the cash difference as determined by IHG's dynamic pricing.

Use the fourth reward night benefit

IHG cardholders get four reward nights for the price of three when redeeming points for stays of three or more nights, giving you yet another reason to choose that redemption property wisely.

Redeem your IHG Premier anniversary night

If you have the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card or IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card, you'll get an anniversary night each year to use at any IHG property with a redemption rate at or under 40,000 points.

While this certainly narrows down your options, IHG has added the ability to "top off" a free night certificate with an unlimited number of points from your account. So, for instance, if you wanted to book a hotel that costs 50,000 points per night, you could redeem a free night certificate plus 10,000 points for the room.

Other ways to redeem IHG points

Opt for airline miles instead of ihg rewards points.

If you'd rather receive airline miles for your stays instead of IHG Rewards points, that's an option, though redemption rates vary by airline . IHG has dozens of airline partners, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and United Airlines.

Donate IHG points to charity

You can donate IHG points in increments of 2,500, 5,000, or 10,000 to the American Red Cross, Goodwill, CARE International, No Kid Hungry, or the IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) to make a difference.

Transfer IHG points to a friend

There's also an option to transfer IHG points to a friend or family member at a cost of $5 per 1,000 points, or buying them through IHG's website . To avoid the fee, you can use your points to book an award night for others, but you'll have to add the person's name to the reservation when you book online or by phone.

Redeem IHG points for gift cards, digital rewards, merchandise, and magazines

IHG allows you to turn your points into gift cards from dozens of brands — it's 13,000 points for a $25 gift card and 25,000 points for a $50 gift card — or you can put them toward eBooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, games, movies, and computer software via IHG's digital rewards catalog .

You can also shop for jewelry, sports equipment, technology, and health and wellness products through IHG's online catalog . And if you're looking for something to read on the plane, you can redeem IHG points for subscriptions to magazines and newspapers.

Some of these redemptions are as low as 100 IHG points, so if you haven't had any activity in your account recently, this is a good way to keep your IHG points from expiring.

Use IHG points to attend special events

Through IHG Auctions , you can redeem IHG points for concerts, sports, special events, or other experiences.

IHG One Rewards elite status tiers and benefits

What to know about ihg status matches, who should consider an ihg status match, how to earn ihg one rewards elite status (the old-fashioned way), ihg status matches recapped.

For most travelers, earning elite status with IHG requires staying numerous nights in its hotels or earning enough points. A quicker path to IHG elite status is getting a status match. Status matches provide immediate elite status and require meeting certain hurdles to retain status beyond an introductory period.

If you're interested in earning IHG One Rewards elite status through a status match, here's everything you need to know.

With the revamped loyalty program , IHG One Rewards now has four levels of elite status.

Silver Elite.

Gold Elite.

Platinum Elite.

Diamond Elite.

Depending on your elite status level, you can expect to receive benefits that improve your stays, save money and increase the points you earn at IHG hotels. The following benefits may be available based on your level:

Up to 100% bonus points.

Rollover nights for next year's status.

Exclusive member rates and promotions.

Free internet.

Complimentary upgrades.

Free breakfast.

Early check-in and late checkout.

Before applying for an IHG status match, it pays to understand the fine print so that you can follow the rules of the promotion.

What is it?

The IHG status match challenge allows you essentially take IHG elite status for a test drive before fully taking the plunge. For example, the last time the challenge was offered — which expired July 31, 2022 — participants in the challenge would automatically be vaulted to IHG One Rewards Platinum status for 120 days.

Once enrolled, you had a small window to earn status with IHG moving forward. Your status would be extended if:

If you stayed five qualifying nights within 120 days of registration you would retain Platinum Elite status through December 2023.

If you stayed 15 qualifying nights within 120 days of registration your status would be upgraded to Diamond Elite status through December 2023.

It normally takes 40 nights to obtain Platinum Elite status, and 70 nights to earn the highly coveted Diamond Elite status, making this expedited route through a status challenge hard to pass up when it's offered to you.

Status matches are limited-time offers

IHG periodically offers limited-time promotions where members can receive a status match. These offers are available only for a short period of time, and you must meet the "challenge" within a certain number of days. To find out if there are any status match offers available, visit the IHG member offers page or contact customer service. StatusMatcher.com is also a good source that shares recent status match attempts from people within the travel community.

You may not need elite status with another hotel to qualify

Status matches are generally targeted at elite status members of other loyalty programs. However, IHG allows its members to apply, even if they don't have elite status with another loyalty program. This strategy encourages existing members to stay more frequently at IHG properties instead of other hotel brands.

You must register ahead of time

For your IHG stays to count for the status match, you must enroll in a status match challenge before your stay. Most challenges don't count prior stays.

Only qualifying stays count

Not all stays qualify for status match promotions. In most cases, award nights or paid stays under a certain dollar amount are excluded. Additionally, there may be geographic exclusions where stays in certain countries don't count for the challenge.

Milestone Rewards are also earned

After staying 20 nights, IHG One Rewards members can earn Milestone Rewards for each subsequent 10 nights they stay at IHG properties, up to 100 nights. While you may earn IHG elite status through a status match that's equivalent to staying a number of nights, you won't receive the Milestone Rewards until you've actually earned those nights.

» Learn more: Your complete guide to earning IHG Rewards points

While elite status should be a goal for anyone whose favorite hotel brand is IHG, requesting a status match is a different story. Status matches often require a high number of stays within a short period of time. Because of that, you should request a status match only if you are planning to stay at IHG hotels frequently over the next few months.

Additionally, consider the elite status available through the status match. If you can get the same level of elite status by holding an IHG credit card or buying InterContinental Ambassador status, does it make sense to pay for the required stays to meet the status match challenge?

These are the most common methods of earning elite status with IHG One Rewards:

Stay at IHG hotels. Whether you're paying cash or booking an award stay, those nights count toward earning elite status.

Earn IHG points. Receive elite qualifying points by paying for hotel stays, spending with select partners or booking a bonus points package.

Buy elite status. IHG members can purchase InterContinental Ambassador status for $200 or 40,000 points and receive Platinum Elite status automatically.

Get a status match. Receive elite status based on your status with a competing program or by performing specific activities within a short timeframe.

Have an IHG credit card. As seen below, both the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and the IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card include automatic Platinum Elite status, while the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card includes Silver Elite status.

Getting a status match is a quick way to achieve elite status before a big trip. You'll receive your upgraded status to start enjoying premier benefits right away. However, you'll need to meet the challenge's requirements in order to keep the status for a longer period of time. If you don't qualify for a status match or can't meet the challenge in time, consider getting an IHG credit card or buying Ambassador status to receive automatic elite status.

6 new credit cards and exciting travel perks in time for summer.

The latest perks for summer are worth exploring.

Responsible credit card use can deliver a world of value in miles, points and benefits. But, different cards offer different perks as many travelers are looking for more than just bonus points.

According to the State of Loyalty Credit Card Rewards from iSeatz, there is a growing trend from credit card issuers to move away from traditional awards (flights, hotels and other points redemption) in favor of lifestyle rewards, including things like tours, activities, dining and wellness activities. There are also updated perks and bonus-earning categories when cardholders use their card for those lifestyle experiences.

These are some of the latest credit cards on the market and the extra perks they are offering in time for summer.

Barclays debuts Xbox Credit Card

A father and son are concentrating while sitting down at home playing video games together.

Video game players rejoice. This new card from Barclays Bank awards points that can be redeemed for xbox.com, Microsoft.com, or console and in-game purchases. The card does not have an annual fee, and after making your first purchase with the card, it unlocks three months of Game Pass Ultimate. Bonus points are a big part of this card: 5x points per dollar on eligible products at the digital Microsoft Store, 3x points on streaming services and dining delivery services.

New cards from Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Cardless

Qatar Airways launches new U.S. credit card.

In early May, Qatar Airways launched a waitlist for its first credit card in the U.S. Now, it is available for applications and awards cardholders Avios points that can be redeemed for free travel on Qatar and Oneworld airline partners . The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card ($499 annual fee and instant Gold status) and Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card ($99 annual fee and instant Silver status) both offer instant elite status for one year after being approved for the card. This is the first international loyalty program to offer a Visa Infinite credit card in the U.S. market. Cardholders earn 5x Avios points on Qatar Airways spend, 3x points on dining and one point on everything else. For the Visa Signature Card, the earning is 4x points for Qatar Airways flights, 2x points on dining and one point on everything else.

Citi Strata Premier Mastercard replaces the original Citi Premier card.

Replacing the Citi Premier card, Citi Strata Premier is a new card product with some upgraded perks. Existing cardholders will receive new Strata Premier cards, which will continue at a $95 annual fee. Among the changes are the ability to earn 10x ThankYou Points on hotels, attractions and car rentals booked directly through the Citi travel site. Cardmembers also receive 3x ThankYou Points when using electric vehicle charging stations. That is in addition to the previous bonus, which will continue, offering 3x points on air travel, dining, supermarkets and gas stations. Cardmembers also receive a $100 credit when making a hotel reservation through the Citi travel site for at least $500.

Special invitations for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders at Paris Olympics

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders have special access to events at the Paris Olympics.

Visa is offering some extra perks for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders attending the Paris Summer Olympics. Flash your card to enter the floating VIP lounge on the Seine where food, beverages and special athlete meet and greets will entertain. Cardholders also have special access to priority reservations at an iconic Parisian restaurant with up-close views of the Eiffel Tower. The a la carte menu is a collaboration between New York Chef Ignacio Mattos and Chef Charles Ducrocq. There is also an Olympics kick-off party for cardholders with tasty food and drinks on July 27.

AmEx launched another limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card

This is the second time American Express uses recycled aircraft to develop a credit card.

For the second time, American Express is releasing a limited-edition credit card made from a retired Jumbo Jet. It was so popular last time that AmEx is creating twice as many cards made from two separate 747 planes that were retired in 2017. The cards, which have a new white glossy finish, became available in late April although they will stop being offered June 5.

Cards increase Global Entry credits

Cards are updating their perks due to the fare increase.

On the heels of Global Entry rates going up from $100 to $120, many credit cards are boosting their credits to fully cover it. Among these are the Citi Prestige and Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercards; the AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard; and a slew of Chase-branded credit cards. They include the Chase Sapphire Reserve, United Explorer Card, United Club Infinite Card, United Quest Card, IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, J.P. Morgan Reserve Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card, IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card and Aeroplan Credit Card.
