25 Years On: The Debut Of Jane’s Addiction Revisited

A quarter of a century after the release of Jane’s Addiction, John Freeman reflects on why the truly great live band’s debut album left him wanting more

jane's addiction 1989 tour

I once swallowed a mouthful of Perry Farrell’s sweat. As a depressingly unadventurous heterosexual, it’s the only time I’ve ever exchanged bodily fluids with another man, so I’ve always basked in a halo of smug pride at ticking that particular feat off my bucket list with the head honcho of Jane’s Addiction.

At least I’m assuming it was sweat. It happened in January 1989 while Jane’s Addiction were playing a gig at The Warehouse in Leeds. During one of the songs, Farrell dived into the audience to partake in a spot of crowd-surfing. He was wearing elbow-length PVC gloves and as the singer was passed above my head – and with my mouth agape – a warm, salty liquid poured out of the end of one of his gloves and straight down my throat. It wasn’t a hugely pleasant experience.

And I’d guess for Jane’s Addiction that particular show in West Yorkshire wasn’t amongst their greatest of experiences. Beset with sound problems, the opening track ‘Whores’ was aborted twice and bassist Eric Avery spent most of the evening scowling in the direction of an uninterested sound engineer. But I’d didn’t care – it was an astounding gig. Perry Farrell, clad in a corset and sporting dreadlocks and a huge nose-ring, was enthralling. I didn’t know whether he was going to fuck, kill or ignore his audience as the band delivered a set of pulsing, jagged funk-metal interspersed with gorgeous ballads (I practically swooned during ‘Summertime Rolls’). They ended with an extraordinary track entitled ‘Jane Says’, which seemed to be about a heroin-addicted prostitute. Jane’s Addiction had been exceptional – it was one of those milestone evenings that opened my 19-year-old mind to the fusion of experimental art to rock music.

Eighteen months later I saw them play another show, this time at Nottingham’s Rock City. By then, Jane’s Addiction were a big deal, having released their third album, Ritual De Lo Habitual . It was – and still is – one of the greatest gigs I’ve ever attended. That night Jane’s Addiction were the embodiment of sex, drugs and rock & roll. Bare-chested and glistening with (more) sweat, they looked amazing, but it was the music that was scorched with brilliance. The songs seethed; ‘Three Days’ billowed and writhed under a barrage of tribal rhythm, while ‘Ted, Just Admit It’ morphed into a blackened anthem for a (de)generation. It was breathtaking.

I believe that original incarnation of Jane’s Addiction was a truly great live band, so it was appropriate that their debut album should be a recording of a show. Jane’s Addiction (it’s also known as XXX or Triple-X ) was released 25 years ago. It wasn’t the first time a band had released a live album as their debut – MC5 unleashed the incendiary Kick Out The Jams in 1969 – but it was still a brave decision. As a debut album, Jane’s Addiction is a perfectly good introduction to a band who would go on to release two stronger albums (1988’s Nothing’s Shocking and the aforementioned Ritual De Lo Habitual ) before imploding under a torrent of drug addiction and infighting.

That’s not to say Jane’s Addiction is a bad album; the tracklist showcased Farrell, Avery, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins as a very special group of musicians. The opening trio of songs (‘Trip Away’, ‘Whores’ and the mighty ‘Pigs In Zen’) perfectly synopsised the quartet’s sonic brew. Each track encompasses the very metal – almost cock rock – axis created by Navarro’s growling guitar work and Perkins’ high-energy percussion. However, Jane’s Addiction were never a classic heavy rock band; Avery’s pummelling, grooving bass ensured the rhythm section was front and centre in almost every song they wrote. In 1987, compared to their other Los Angeles peers, Jane’s Addiction were funkier than Guns N’ Roses and edgier than Red Hot Chili Peppers. But, critically, they also possessed an extra dimension – the talismanic Perry Farrell.

Farrell defined Jane’s Addiction. Born in Queens, New York to a mother who committed suicide when Farrell was three years old and a jeweller father who was "sharp, with a ton of style," according to his son. Farrell moved to California aged 17, taking with him "a surfboard, some art supplies, an ounce of weed, one phone number and no place to stay." He quickly began hanging out with "underground, subversive people" and befriended members of bands such as X, The Minutemen and Black Flag, who were central to LA’s alternative rock scene in the early 80s. Farrell was sponge-like; absorbing ideas, experiences and exploring his own art via the use of a myriad of narcotics.

Farrell’s first band proper band was Psi Com, a goth rock outfit that would enjoy some local infamy before disbanding in 1985. By that time, he’d already met bass player (and archetypal rebellious youth) Eric Avery; the pair had bonded over a mutual love of Joy Division and the San Franciscan punk band, Flipper. After a number of failed attempts to recruit a drummer and a guitarist, Avery’s sister, Rebecca, suggested her boyfriend (Perkins) and ex-boyfriend (Navarro) as potential band members. Jane’s Addiction had found their classic line-up.

Dave Navarro was a complex teenager. An extremely gifted guitarist, his childhood was decimated by the death of his mother – the actress Connie Navarro – who was murdered by her partner when Navarro was 15. Alcohol and heroin became an integral part of Navarro’s coping strategy and the cycle of substance abuse – common amongst his band mates – would be the undoing of the initial chapter in the Jane’s Addiction legend. Navarro would later comment that "heroin ruined my dreams."

Another person that made a significant impact on shaping the DNA of Jane’s Addiction was Casey Niccoli. When the band first formed, the artist and film-maker was Perry’s partner. When they met Farrell was living in a huge, rambling house on Wilton Place in West Hollywood, which acted as a squat-cum-commune-cum-rehearsal space. Niccoli’s presence at the Wilton house would heavily influence the band’s visual aesthetic, be it clothes, stage design or album artwork (she’s the flaming Siamese twins on the astonishing cover of Nothing’s Shocking ).

By the beginning of 1987, Jane’s Addiction were a big deal in their home city and would play to audiences of 3,000 at the legendary Scream nightclub in downtown LA. With major label A&R suits clamouring to sign the band, they decided to release a live debut album on their own Triple X imprint, in an attempt to capture their raw power. The album was recorded on January 26th 1987 at the Roxy Theatre at a cost of $4,000. The band actually played two sets on the night – an initial opening acoustic session, followed by a full electric version. Farrell spent most of the second set cussing the glut of industry-types in the audience. Jane’s Addiction were never going to play it safe.

However, as a depiction of their live prowess, Jane’s Addiction is somewhat of a disappointment. After the live recording, the songs were then corrected and overdubbed at The Edge studio (which, bizarrely, involved the inclusion of audience applause from a Los Lobos show). The result was a cleaned and primped mix that emasculated the intensity and exhilaration of a Jane’s Addiction gig. The crowd reaction was virtually non-existent – I’ve had a better response after giving a death-by-slides PowerPoint presentation – as to render the ‘live feel’ distant and anaemic.

But that’s not to say that the album doesn’t contain a significant slug of alchemy. The centrepiece of Jane’s Addiction – and arguably the band’s greatest song – is ‘Jane Says’. The track was written about Jane Bainter, "The First Lady Of Wilton House". Bainter was a drug addict (and the inspiration for the group’s name) who was always promising, as the notorious lyric recites, to "kick tomorrow". It’s a beautiful song (although I prefer the addition of steel drums on the version re-recorded for Nothing’s Shocking ) set to a heartbreaking narrative. From the opening couplets ("Jane says/ ‘I’m done with Sergio /He treats me like a rag doll.’") the song is an unflinching homage to Bainter’s struggles with heroin and the impact of her manipulative El Salvadorean dealer.

Elsewhere the agile, harmonica-led ‘My Time’ and the gentle love-ballad ‘I Would For You’, confirmed that Jane’s Addiction wouldn’t be neatly compartmentalised. This was a band with wings. The album also contains two covers – a full-blooded take on ‘Rock & Roll’ from The Velvet Underground’s Loaded album and a deliciously subdued version of The Rolling Stones’ staple ‘Sympathy For The Devil’. The latter didn’t sit well with Navarro who claimed they played it as a "joke" before complaining that one of his "least favourite bands" featured on his first ever record. What a bummer for the poor sap.

Soon after recording their debut, Jane’s Addiction signed a huge deal with Warner Brothers (the advance alone was rumoured to be $250,000), released their two brilliant albums before self-destructing during a set at the very first Lollapalooza event, as huge tensions around Avery and Navarro’s drug use and arguments about the split of royalties consumed the band. Indeed, Farrell already had become a central figure in the creation of the travelling Lollapalooza festival and, after the split, he and Perkins quickly formed Porno For Pyros. Navarro would eventually become the guitarist for the Chili Peppers (after earlier spurning the advances of Axl Rose to replace Izzy Stradlin in Guns N’ Roses).

Jane’s Addiction would periodically and partially reform (Avery eventually rejoined to complete the original line-up four years ago) and in late 2003, I saw them for a third time at Manchester’s stately Apollo theatre. They were promoting a new album, Strays . It was a pretty decent comeback record and the show was good – but not great. I didn’t get close to Perry Farrell that night, his stage-diving days seemingly long gone. But, as if stuck in a perspiration-obsessed Pavlovian nightmare, I could almost taste his sweat.

"We’re very happy to be here tonight, and it just so happens we run across a very, very dear and old friend of ours who will join us on this next song," frontman Perry Farrell told the crowd about midway through their set. "Please welcome Tom Morello!"

Morello came back for the last song of the night, "Chip Away," too.

Jane's are heading out on a North American tour later this summer. It's their first tour with their classic lineup in 14 years . Watch fan-shot footage of Morello performing with them and check out a full list of North American tour dates below.

When Jane's Addiction's classic lineup reunited last week for the first time since 2010, it was the start of more good news for fans of the Los Angeles band.

Thanks to the return of guitarist Dave Navarro (who had been battling Long Covid), alongside singer Perry Farrell, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Eric Avery, Jane's was set to reveal even better news: they will go on tour alongside Love and Rockets, a group they opened up for in the 1980s.

This summer the bands will co-headline a two-month tour, beginning in Las Vegas and winding up in the midwest.

jane's addiction 1989 tour

Long time fans might remember that Avery left the band in 2010 and has since toured with Garbage while recording with others.

In 2022, Avery came back into the loving arms of Jane's but Navarro was sidelined with the plague, until just recently.

jane's addiction 1989 tour

On Thursday, May 23, at the tiny Bush Hall in London, the perfect pieces of Jane's Addiction, were finally back together. Expected to be the Led Zeppelin of the pre-grunge college alternative era, they instead showed how a band could turn two perfect albums into a career.

At Bush Hall, 66.6% of the setlist was comprised of songs that could be found on Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual de lo habitual and it could have been more. There was no "Idiots Rule," no "Up the Beach," and no "Summertime Rolls," for example.

They were making room for two new songs, one that got it's live debut on that minuscule stage.

"Imminent Redemption," which couldn't be anyone else's baby other than Jane's Addiction, sounds straight out of 1989 and Navarro's guitar reminds you of hearing a long lost friend's voice on a telephone being held to your ear in the dark.

Another new was "True Love," a gentle tune Robert Smith might feel comfortable covering one day in a wind storm.

Both songs are short, sweet, and not trying too hard. Squeezing new music out of Jane's Addiction is not an easy task so if they give you a two-and-a-half minute rocker, you say thank you an stop being so greedy.

Not only should we be grateful Jane's is back, as a whole, like in olden times - but look and hear how healthy they sound. For all they've gone through they still look like the weirdly stylish and handsome rock stars that once used to roam the earth.

It's worth coming down the mountain to witness.

Navarro does not seem to have lost any muscle mass, his biceps are still pronounced, he still looks nimble, he's clearly put the 'vid behind him. Blessed, we all are. We live in a time with fewer and fewer guitar heroes and his sound remains so identifiable and clear especially on the solos we all now know by heart.

This will be a reunion of sorts for Love and Rockets with Jane's Addiction. In 1988 Jane's opened for Daniel Ash's and David J's Bauhaus + Tones on Tail spinoff.

Now that Tones on Tail had a successful reunion of their own earlier this month in Pasadena , it looks like it's time for Love and Rockets to spread the joy around a bit more like it did last summer for 18 dates .

A few days ago Jane's and Love And Rockets announced they would co-headline a 23-city tour that kicks off on August 9 at Las Vegas' newest luxury hotel on the Strip, The Fontainebleau.

The co-headlining fun will begin once Jane's has been on the road for a couple of months. Tickets available on their website .

Jane's Addiction 2024 tour brings classic lineup to Phoenix. How to get tickets

jane's addiction 1989 tour

After reuniting for the first time in 14 years to perform an intimate show in London, the original members of Jane’s Addiction have announced a co-headlining tour with fellow alt-rock legends Love and Rockets, with a Phoenix concert at Arizona Financial Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024.

Bassist Eric Avery, who quit Jane’s Addiction in 2010, rejoined the fold in 2022, but guitarist Dave Navarro had to miss the tour they did that year with Smashing Pumpkins due to long COVID-19.

That makes this the first time all four members of the classic Jane's Addiction lineup — Perry Farrell, Avery, Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins — have toured together since Avery’s departure.

The first time Jane’s Addiction members went their separate ways, in 1991, their farewell tour became the first Lollapalooza festival.

US rock band Jane’s Addiction, consisting of vocalist Perry Farrell , guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery, play the Summer Series at Trinity College Dublin this Friday, June 28th.

Formed in 1985, Jane’s Addiction’s first release was a self-titled live album in 1987, which was followed by two other albums, Nothing Shocking (1988) and Ritual De Lo Habitual (1990). Not long after, their initial farewell tour in 1991 launched the first Lollapalooza, which has since become a perennial alternative rock festival.

Since their early success, the band have reformed and broke up more than once: in 1997 with Flea taking over bass duties for Avery on a one-off tour; then in 2001 with Martyn LeNoble and later Chris Chaney on the bass. In 2003 the band released the hugely acclaimed Strays album, before dissolving again the following year. However, 2008 saw Jane’s Addiction reform once again for a world tour, and in 2011 they released their album The Great Escape Artist, with Chaney on bass again.

Jane’s Addiction have since continued to play shows and remain active, and if you are heading to see them in Trinity College, keep reading to find out everything you need to know.

Map showing venue for the 2024 Summer Series concerts at Trinity College Dublin

Plan and book your return travel arrangements in advance, allowing for at least an extra two hours travel time to and from the venue. Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle and use public transport to get to the concert. There will be one entry point at Lincoln Place Gate between Nassau Street and Westland Row, and there will be no entry to the site via the Front Square or Nassau St gates.

By car: There will be no parking facilities provided at the concert site, and since the concert is in Dublin city centre, you may be best off parking elsewhere in the city and using public transport the rest of the way.

By train: Get the Dart to the Pearse Street or Tara Street stations, as they will be running services to and from the concerts each day. If travelling from Connolly/Heuston stations, get the Luas red line to Abbey Street and the green line from there to Dawson Luas stop, or you can walk as it’s about 15 minutes on foot.

By Luas: Trinity College is well serviced by the Luas green line, just get off at Dawson Luas stop and follow the signs to the concert.

By bus: Since you will be heading to a central part of the city, there are many Dublin Buses you can get to bring you within walking distance of the concert site. Routes 11, 37, 38, 38A, 38D, 39, 39A and 70 will bring you to Nassau Street and routes 9, 13, 16, 27, 49, 54a, 56a, 65b, 69, 77a, 83, 122, 123, 150 and 151 will bring you to Dame Street.

There is no accessible parking available for Trinity College, but if you have a blue badge, you can find accessible on street parking here .

What will they play?

According to the band’s recent concert in Italy, here is a snippet of what fans can expect on Friday:

  • Ain’t No Right
  • Ted, Just Admit It...
  • Pigs in Zen
  • Summertime Rolls
  • Then She Did...
  • Mountain Song
  • Been Caught Stealing

What’s the story with security?

This is a strictly over-18s event – ID will be required and anyone under 18 will be refused entry without refund. Allow time for security checks on the way in, and remember Trinity College is a standing only site. Strict security checks will be in operation, and everyone will be subject to a search permissible under law.

Bags larger than A4 size will not be permitted and all bags may be searched; this can be time-consuming, so consider going bagless for easier entry. There will be no cloakroom or storage facilities. No umbrellas, alcohol, garden furniture, selfie sticks, drones, laser pens, aerosols, smoke and gas canisters, nitrous oxide and any associated equipment, flares, glasses, or cans, among other items, will be allowed into the event. There is no readmission to the concert, so once you leave there’s no getting back in.

Can I take photographs at the concert?

Yes, but only with a smartphone or small camera. Professional cameras with a detachable lens and any other recording equipment are banned.

What’s the weather forecast?

At the time of writing, Friday is expected to be dry but cloudy, with temperatures between 12-18 degrees, but keep an eye on the ever-changing Irish weather forecast and dress accordingly. Think wellies, boots or runners, layers, raincoats/ponchos and sun cream. But remember – no umbrellas.

Watch: AC/DC Performs In Vienna During Spring/Summer 2024 'Power Up' European Tour

Fan-filmed video of AC/DC 's June 23 concert at Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna, Austria can be seen below.

The setlist for the show was as follows, according to Setlist.fm :

01. If You Want Blood (You've Got It) 02. Back In Black 03. Demon Fire 04. Shot Down In Flames 05. Thunderstruck 06. Have A Drink On Me 07. Hells Bells 08. Shot In The Dark 09. Stiff Upper Lip 10. Shoot To Thrill 11. Sin City 12. Rock 'N' Roll Train 13. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap 14. High Voltage 15. Riff Raff 16. You Shook Me All Night Long 17. Highway To Hell 18. Whole Lotta Rosie 19. Let There Be Rock

20. T.N.T. 21. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

The "Power Up" European tour marks AC/DC 's first with the band's new touring lineup consisting of singer Brian Johnson , guitarists Angus and Stevie Young , drummer Matt Laug and the latest addition to the group's touring lineup, bassist Chris Chaney .

The 24-date trek will run through August. The trek will hit Germany, Austria and Switzerland before landing at London's Wembley Stadium for a pair of shows on July 3 and 7, then moving on to Germany, Slovakia and Paris and winding down at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. The European tour is the first run of gigs since AC/DC 's return to the stage at last year's rock Power Trip festival in Indio, California.

AC/DC 's last tour took place in 2015 and 2016 and had a $180 million gross, with 2,310,061 sold tickets reported to the Pollstar box office.

Laug is an American drummer who has played with many bands/artists such as Alanis Morissette , Alice Cooper , SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and Vasco Rossi . Matt moved to Los Angeles after graduating from South Florence High School in 1986 and after attending college in L.A., Matt became a sought-after studio drummer.

In 2001, Laug supported AC/DC as part of SLASH'S SNAKEPIT on the North American and European legs of the "Stiff Upper Lip" tour.

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette 's touring and recording band. Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY , as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician, having played with artists including Joe Cocker , Shakira , Slash and Avril Lavigne to Sara Bareilles , Gavin Degraw , Cher , SHINEDOWN and Celine Dion . Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro ( JANE'S ADDICTION ), Mark McGrath ( SUGAR RAY ), Josh Freese ( FOO FIGHTERS ) and Billy Morrison ( BILLY IDOL ).

Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .

During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray 's "Let There Be Talk" podcast, Cliff was asked if Johnson 's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring. Cliff responded: "It was before then. I spoke to Angus about it initially. I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up. I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn't wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round. It was a tough tour to finish. God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out, finish it up. He did a great job. And at the end of that, I was definitely — that was it for me. Done — just done. That compounded the whole thing."

According to Williams , he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus 's late brother, founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64. Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" .

"If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it, for me, 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young ," Cliff said. "This is for him. And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years. And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that.

"We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up, and we had great rehearsals," he continued. "The band was playing really well. So [they asked me], 'Do you wanna do a few shows? 'Sure'. A few shows. We were planning on doing that. Everyone goes home to their respective homes, and bang, we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]."

Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" .

"For both [my mental and physical] health," he said. "I definitely have some physical issues, which I won't bore you with the details of. But, yeah, it's tough. I'm very grateful for everything. It's been fantastic. But I just don't wanna do that anymore."

Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement. He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group. "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone . "It was not like starting over again, but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it. I didn't want to miss that."

The follow-up to 2014's "Rock Or Bust" , "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien , who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" .
