Cycle Jordan Tour

Delve into the magical ancient world of Jordan on this exhilarating family adventure! This tour has been specially designed to highlight the most exciting corners of Jordan, from historical Jerash to magnificent Petra, from Wadi Rum desert to the blissful Red Sea coast. With a carefully weighted balance of activities and down time, your family will love this cultural Middle Eastern odyssey. There are some long travel days on this trip, with driving times adding up to between six and eight hours. This is a good opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers and soak up the diverse scenery. It’s important to prepare for hot temperatures during the day and cooler climates in the evening, particularly in the desert. Layers are the one of the best ways to tackle this disparity in weather. Water, hats and comfortable shoes for lots of walking around sites like Petra are recommended. Also pack some warmer clothes for the winter season. Jordan requires a certain level of modesty in terms of clothing, although on the beach the usual swimwear is acceptable. Please be aware that consumption of alcohol outside of approved venues or in the streets is illegal.

Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome to Jordan. If you have booked a transfer you’ll be met at Queen Alia International Airport and transferred to your hotel. Otherwise, make your own way to the joining hotel, located in the heart of Amman, on the edge of the old downtown and within walking distance to the new city centre. Amman has served as the modern and ancient capital of Jordan and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a 1994 excavation uncovering homes and towers believed to have been built during the Stone Age (circa 7,000 BC). Today is the joining day and free for you to settle in. If you have time, head to major historical and biblical sites just 10 minutes walk away – the 6,000-seat Roman theatre built in the 2nd century, or the Citadel, which offers up panoramic views over the city from the highest hill in town. Within the Citadel is the museum that contains the Dead Sea Scrolls, and also the excavated ruins of an Umayyad palace. Maybe head to Rainbow Street for your first falafel tonight. We will have a group meeting at 5pm where you will meet your leader and fellow group members. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where it will take place. It’s important that you attend, as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information for each member of your family. If you’re going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know.

This morning we take a delightful walk through the Ajloun Forest Reserve along the "Soap House Trail". We will hike through thick healthy woodland filled with oak, pistachio and oriental strawberry trees down to the Soap house, where local women follow the traditional process of making Orjan pure olive soap. We then continue onto Jerash. The ruins of Jerash were re-discovered in 1806 and continue to be one of Jordan's most amazing sites. One of the best examples of a Roman city in the Middle East, the ancient walled town that survives today is a remarkable evocation of life 2,000 years ago. With a history stretching back at least 2,300 years, Jerash is one of the best preserved examples of a provincial Roman town anywhere in the world. Its hey day came with the arrival of Alexander the Great and the remains include a forum, nymphaeum, hippodrome, two theatres (complete with numbered seats!) and several temples. Along the Colonnaded Street, grooves in the paving stones show where chariot wheels once rolled and remnants of exquisite mosaics still cover some floors. There is time to wander the site and imagine life in ancient times before returning to Amman with time to relax, or the opportunity to visit some of the city's sights, such as the Citadel.

In and around Madaba, Petra, Dana

This morning we start our journey towards Petra, taking the Desert Highway south. En route we stop at Madaba. The historical town of Madaba is famous for its Ottoman-style houses and beautiful Byzantine-era mosaics, including the famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land at St George's Church. Other mosaic masterpieces found within the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and in the Archaeological Museum depict a rampant profusion of flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits such as hunting, fishing and farming. If these interest you, you'll be delighted to know that literally hundreds of other mosaics from the 5th to 7th centuries are scattered throughout Madaba's churches and homes. Just beyond Madaba is another biblical site, Mt Nebo, which overlooks the Jordan Valley. The bible tells us this is the final resting place of Moses; from here he looked out onto the Promised Land. Along the way today you may see the black 'beit ash shar' tents of the hardy Bedouin who still wander throughout the Middle East as they have for centuries. Moving between the few grazing spots which dot the parched landscape, they survive by breeding goats, sheep and camels. Although the traditional nomadic way of life is starting to disappear as some Bedouin succumb to the lure of fixed accommodation, many adhere stolidly to the old way - albeit with the occasional addition of a 4WD vehicle for transport!. Living in such a hostile environment has taught them the importance of a friendly welcome and the ancient code of hospitality to travellers still survives today. We will then take an easy walk around Dana village, a traditional village on a nature reserve allowing us to meet locals and learn about their history and culture as we walk through the terraced gardens ad local craft workshops. the views here are stunning. Then, head onto Petra to spend the night.

Make your way to Petra, squeezing through the long stretch of stonewall that eventually spills out into the breath-taking ‘rose city’ – one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Though the origins are mysterious, it’s thought this rock carved city was the ancient capital of the Nabatean people back in 600BC. Nobody in the West knew about it until 1812, when a Swiss explorer dressed up like a local, snuck in and then told the world. Your first glimpse of the iconic, intricate Treasury will be truly memorable, and you’ll find that the site is surprisingly big. You can explore the old Roman road, temples and several old tombs, as well as the rock-hewn amphitheatre. If you have the legs, walk one-hour up to the Monastery and up the clifftop path overlooking the Treasury. When you’ve finished exploring, head back to the hotel to rest up and prepare for a unique cooking experience. At the nearby fully equipped, modern Al Qantara Kitchen, you’ll taste Jordanian food, cook with a Jordanian chef, and have fun learning all about Arabic culture and cuisine. In a 2-hour class, prepare appetisers like baba ghanoush and hummus, then typical Jordanian mains like Maglouba, Kabsah or Mjadra, learning the secrets of these amazing Arabic tastes. Then enjoy it all with a big meal together, taking a copy of the recipes to impress everyone back home. Notes: A lot of walking is required to see Petra. A basic level of fitness will enhance your enjoyment. When entering Petra as a group, a complimentary horse ride is included in the ticket price from the entrance point down to the Siq. Intrepid doesn't recommend that passengers take this option due to the safety and insurance liability involved.

This morning before we leave we will visit Little Petra, have tea with a local Bedouin family. We will then drive to Wadi Rum, which offers some of the most extraordinary desert scenery anywhere and recently starred in the film "The Martian" Wadi Rum is full of weird and beautiful lunar-like rock formations. Traces of ancient civilisations can be seen in the many carved inscriptions found throughout the Wadi Rum area, from pictographs to Thamudic, Nabataean and Arabic texts. The most enduring monuments in Wadi Rum, however, are those carved by nature - the natural rock bridges, towering rose-coloured sand dunes and scattered rocky peaks. We will enjoy a 4WD desert discovery, stopping to enter a narrow siq where many inscriptions can be seen. Passing Thamud nomads from Saudi Arabia and the Nabataean people have all left their mark on the surrounding rocks. Nature provides a number of rock bridges that offer some stunning views. There is also the option to explore by camel. Sleep in a simple desert camp where you'll have the choice of sleeping under a camel hair tent or out under the stars. A mattress and blankets are provided. Please be aware that while the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night and warm clothes and a sleeping bag is highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months. A dinner cooked in a local earthen oven is included. Western-style toilet facilities are available. Conditions are basic at our desert camp, but the company of our Bedouin hosts is warm and you'll treasure the memory of sleeping beneath the twinkling desert night sky.

Today you’ll drive from the desert to the coast (approximately 1 hour), for some fun, sun and relaxation. Aqaba is landlocked Jordan’s only town on the sea, and this Red Sea beach resort is yours to explore for the rest of the day. Just south of town, the warm and relatively shallow waters of the Red Sea support a series of stunning untouched coral reefs practically unsurpassed outside Australia's Great Barrier Reef. They make for some of the best snorkelling you can find – the kids can grab a mask and some flippers and do their best mermaid impression. You might also take a boat trip if you don’t want to get wet, take a long walk along the shoreline, or simply kick back by the pool. If you want to get historical then there’s the 14th century Ottoman Fort to check out. This is where the T.E Lawrence (of ‘of Arabia’ fame) rode to Cairo with big news about a revolt. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants to help you enjoy the local cuisine.

Leaving Aqaba, travel along the King's Highway, a winding road that follows the contours of the rocky hills, occasionally passing nomadic shepherds as they tend their flocks in the few areas where there’s water. Descend lower and lower until you eventually arrive on the shores of the Dead Sea (approximately 3 hours). This isn’t actually a sea but a super-salty lake (seven times saltier than the ocean and 'dead' because of the lack of life in it), which lies at the lowest point on Earth (420 metres below sea level). The density of the water means that when you take a dip, it’s more of a float than a swim, making for great photos. Maybe grab a handful of the shoreline’s mud and slop it over your body on the way back in – it’s full of nutrient-rich natural minerals that are meant to have healing properties, and will leave your skin feeling great. You’ll stop at a private beach with pools and a gentle slope to the water. Towels are available for hire. Don't forget to pack your swimwear for today! This evening you can meet up with the rest of the group for a final meal together, and reflect on your adventures in this fascinating country.

After breakfast, this amazing adventure through Jordan comes to an end at your resort in the Dead Sea. Amman's Queen Alia International Airport is approximately one hour's drive from the Dead Sea.

Start planning your family tour in Jordan

For families looking to immerse themselves in another culture and embark on an unforgettable adventure,   Jordan   is the answer. This stunning country is not known as the land of ancient wonders for nothing and you and your kids will be able to explore its many exciting sites on   a family trip   that will take you through stunning scenery, bustling cities, warm waters and even through history.

Best things to see and do in Jordan with kids

What to see as a family.

Any family travelling to Jordan should not miss a visit to the lost city of   Petra . One of the seven wonders of the world and a   UNESCO world heritage site , the remains of this city are fascinating and families can take a   tour on foot   or by vehicle, or even on camel-back. Head just outside of Petra to find   Little Petra , the perfect accompaniment to its larger counterpart, which is not to be missed. If you choose to visit on foot you’ll be able to stroll through the rocks, seeing ancient temples and buildings rising up on either side of you. If you enjoy these   ancient ruins , you should also stop off at   Amman , which is home to a Roman theater as well as museums of archaeology and ancient history.   Jerash   is another great site for families to visit and here you can see Greco-Roman ruins of all descriptions as well as the famous   Temple of Artemis , which is remarkably well-preserved. The final stop on your historical tour should certainly be   Al-Khazneh , where ruins, temples, tombs and crusader castles can be seen wherever you turn and the whole family is bound to be fascinated by the stories and   mythology   that accompanies a tour to this interesting place. For those who are interested, there are also several biblical sites to visit here, and you’ll be able to find out the significance of each of these world-famous places for many religious groups all over the globe.

What to do as a family

No family trip to Jordan would be complete without a visit to the bizarre and lunar landscape of   Wadi Rum   where a whole host of activities await you and your children. Go hiking among the striking dunes or, if that isn’t your idea of fun, why not take a   camel ride ? You can even go   quad biking   into the desert to find the perfect spot for a sand boarding expedition. Stay the night in a   desert camp   in special tents after enjoying a delicious traditional Jordanian meal cooked on a campfire by your guides.   After your stay in a Bedouin camp, visit   Zanqa ; another favorite destination for   family activities . Here you can enjoy the natural hot springs, go canyoning or set off on a   hiking trip   to get the best views in the middle-east.   Dana   is yet another top choice for hiking and is home to nature reserves that you can explore to your heart’s content. After all that action-packed adventure, head to   Aqaba , where you can find numerous family resorts as well as some of the best diving spots in Jordan. Parents can treat themselves to a spa day while kids enjoy a   water park   or one of the other activities on offer especially for children. You can also go on a snorkelling trip or organise a glass-bottomed boat to see the underwater paradise that is   The Red Sea . If you want to kick the relaxation up a notch, make your last stop   The Dead Sea , the lowest point on earth, where you can float on the salty water and feel as though you’re on another planet. Quite apart from its therapeutic properties, this is also a unique and beautiful area that is not to be missed by anyone travelling to Jordan.

Best time to travel to Jordan as a family

When you choose to   plan your trip   to Jordan will depend on what you wish to do during your stay and will depend mainly on temperature. Since Jordan is made up of 90% desert, temperatures are unsurprisingly scorching during summer months. However, what many people fail to prepare for is the fact that night-times here can be very cold with an extreme drop in temperature once the sun goes in. The North west of the country receives the most rainfall so if you plan on visiting here outside of the summer months, pack some waterproof clothing.   The Dead Sea   and its surrounding areas are the hottest places to visit during the summer, with temperatures soaring to 40 degrees Celsius and above. All in all, the   best time to visit   is generally between March and June and then during September and October where temperatures are bearable and won’t put a stop to any activities you have planned. If you do visit between June and August, try to plan day trips earlier in the day, leaving you free during the hot afternoons to siesta or relax.

Family holiday tips for travelling to Jordan

With a little research and knowledge you can ensure that you are as prepared as possible for your time in Jordan, here a few tips and tricks to ensure that everything runs smoothly on your   family trip .

  • As with any popular tourist destination, you and your family may encounter pickpockets when visiting some of the more crowded sites, particularly in markets. These are easy to tackle by simply making sure that any valuables are kept safe and sound back at your hotel and that you don’t carry large amounts of cash.
  • Try to learn a few key phrases in the local language. This will be helpful in any situation and even if you never need it to communicate, it can be   fun and educational for children   to learn about the local language and culture. If nothing else, everyone likes to be greeted and thanked in their native language.
  • The culture here can be different and so it is important to be respectful. For most visitors this will apply particularly if you plan on visiting any religious sites. Dress and behave appropriately, wearing long pants and a shawl for women if you a touring around religious areas and temples.

When to go in Jordan?

Discover a country that is full of history, with a fascinating culture, and whose inhabitants are very hospitable. Visit Petra and Wadi Rum, or spend some time in the desert of this beautiful Middle Eastern country. The two best periods for going to Jordan are spring and autumn, because the temperatures are most pleasant. Between November and March there is more rain. In winter it can be very cold and it may even snow. Also, be aware of the differences in climate between different regions: although the eastern desert is bearable in summer, the southern desert is so hot that it's a real ordeal.

Culture and customs.

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Western influences (particularly in Amman and other large cities) have infiltrated Jordanian society so Jordan now possesses a mix of Arabian customs amid modern ways of life. Due to immigration, Jordan now has a significant Palestinian and Iraqi population, adding to the cultural diversity of the country.

Despite the outside influences, Islamic traditions are strong in Jordan with spectacular mosques signaling the call to prayer five times a day, Ramadan being observed each year and some segregation of the sexes occurring.

The desert-dwelling Bedouin have a distinct culture of their own, drawing on traditions that have been passed down for centuries. Living a largely nomadic lifestyle, the Bedouin rely on the herding of animals and the creation of handicrafts in the absence of a fertile environment to farm. With a strong musical heritage, traditional instruments are played and time-honored traditions are continued.

Hospitality is a crucial element of Jordanian culture. Most visitors will be humbled by the kindness, sincerity and genuine care showed by Jordanians. Being welcomed into peoples’ homes is common, and can probably be attributed to the custom of welcoming strangers and sharing food when traveling in the unforgiving desert.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Featuring typical Middle Eastern ingredients like lamb, chickpeas, garlic and a range of aromatic herbs and spices, Jordanian cuisine is delicious.

Things to try in Jordan

Like many other Middle Eastern countries, a plate of shared breads and dips is a great way to begin a feast.

This traditional Bedouin dish of lamb and yogurt is usually served with rice and bread. This is the national dish of Jordan, so definitely try it before you leave.

These small, sweet pastries made with honey and nuts will have you going back for more.

The coffee in Jordan is strong. Often spiced with a hint of cardamom, coffee is strongly linked to the famed Jordanian hospitality, so drink up – it would be rude not to!

Geography and environment

Jordan is made up of a staggeringly diverse range of natural environments. From stark deserts to towering mountains, fertile wetlands, coastal reefs and urban cities, journeying through Jordan provides changing scenery and varying conditions.

Sharing borders with Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Jordan mixes modern architecture with heritage-filled buildings, well-manicured streets with historic alleyways and impressive mansions with simple homes.

Modern, developed cities like Amman and Aqaba feature unique architecture, spectacular mosques, five-star hotels and resorts. Small villages with rustic housing populate the less-built-up rural areas and Bedouin tents made of goat hair can be found in desert areas.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Jordan was originally inhabited by the Nabataeans thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, Jordan has been a place conquered and inhabited by many different people including the Romans, Greeks, Assyrians, Ottoman Turks, Egyptians and Mamluks (people of Kurdish origins). All these influences can still be seen today in Jordan's ancient ruins, architecture, crafts and arts. Many battles were fought in Ancient Jordan, including the Christian crusaders who clashed with Islamic Forces in Jordan during the 11th and 12th centuries. The first Muslim Dynasty began with the Umayyad Empire in 661.

Recent history

In 1950, Jordan was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in 1951, King Abdullah I was assassinated while visiting a mosque. His eldest son became king but was removed from his duties in 1952 due to mental illness. In 1953, his teenage son Hussein Ibn Talal became king, and continued to rule for over 40 years. In the 1960s, Jordan saw many immigrants arrive and settle – mainly Palestinians escaping the conflict in their homeland.

In 1999, King Abdullah II succeeded his father King Hussein and continues to rule Jordan now. His reign has been characterized by liberal policies, economic reforms and technological advances. His wife, Queen Rania of Jordan, has a visible public profile, is active in many social causes and is regarded internationally as a highly influential woman.

Jordan travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa for Jordan?

Visas are required by all visitors entering Jordan.

Single entry visas valid for 14 days and can be obtained by most nationalities on arrival at the airport in Amman or at the Jordanian border for approximately JOD40.

It can be significantly more expensive to acquire your visa from the embassy in your home country.

If you require a stay longer than 14 days, visas obtained from the embassy in your home country will be valid for two months.

When is the best time to visit Jordan?

The weather in Jordan can get quite extreme. Overall, it tends to be hot during the day and cold at night (in desert areas, expect it to be extremely hot during the day and freezing at night). Yet during winter it can get bitterly cold, with snowfall occurring in some parts of the country.

Traveling during the summer months (June, July and August) can be challenging for those not accustomed to the heat, so visiting Jordan during spring and autumn is recommended for those who wish to escape the hotter temperatures.

Is tipping customary in Jordan?

Tipping is up to the individual in Jordan. Hotels and up-market restaurants typically add a surcharge that is included in bills, which is usually 10%. Rounding up bills and leaving spare change is a good idea when dining in smaller restaurants and when using taxis.

What is the internet access like in Jordan?

Internet access is growing rapidly in Jordan. Internet can usually be accessed from hotels and internet cafes in major cities. Expect little to no access in small towns, villages and other rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Jordan?

Cell phone coverage is good in Jordan’s major cities and built-up areas like Amman and Aqaba. Expect limited to no phone coverage in more isolated areas like the desert. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Jordan?

Western-style toilets are common in modern hotels, malls and at popular tourist areas. Squat toilets are the standard throughout the rest of the country. Sometimes, you may need to pay and bring your own toilet paper when visiting public rest rooms.

Can I drink the water in Jordan?

Drinking water from taps in Jordan can be safe, depending on where you are. It's considered safe to drink water from modern hotels that have filtered water but perhaps not so from smaller establishments and in rural areas. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Peel fruit before eating and avoid ice in drinks.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Jordan?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in Jordan. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Jordan?

ATMs are common in Jordan’s main cities so finding one won't be a problem. Rural and remote areas typically will have less ATMs so be sure to carry enough cash for purchases when away from the city.

Is Jordan LGBTQIA+ friendly?

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Homosexuality has been decriminalized in Jordan since 1951, and while Jordanians who identify as having an LGBTQIA+ identity will not be criminalized, many people continue to hide their sexuality or identity from their families, and there is still a deep social stigma. As long as LGBTQIA+ travelers display some discretion and respect for local culture, particularly when visiting places outside of the major cities and tourist areas, they will have no problem visiting Jordan.

Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

What to wear in Jordan?

Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country and conservative clothing is the norm for all genders. You don't need to cover yourself from head to toe, but you should wear clothing that covers your chest, shoulders and legs from the knee up. Honoring the local dress code shows respect for the local culture and customs.

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Our tour of Jordan starts in Amman, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Home to almost half of Jordan's entire population, Amman is a fascinating city of contrasts, where the ancient and the modern collide. Get lost in the bustling souks of downtown, where you'll be tempted by falafel and baklawa stalls, or visit the hillside Roman Theatre for a taster of the city's varied history.

There are no activities planned for today, so you're free to arrive in Amman at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer, you'll need to arrive at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), a 30-minute drive from our hotel.

Due to most flights arriving late in the evening, our Explore Leader will meet you for a welcome meeting the next morning. You'll find the meeting information on the notice board in the hotel reception.

Accommodation:

Toledo Hotel (or similar)

Grade: Premium Hotel

Swimming pool available

Meals provided: none.

After breakfast, we'll gather for an introductory meeting before heading north of Amman to ancient Jerash. Inhabited for 6,500 years, the city's golden age was in Roman times when it became part of the Decapolis League - a confederation of important Middle Eastern cities.

One of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world, only 10% of the city has been uncovered since excavation began more than 100 years ago but you can still get a feel for how life in the city once was. Walk the colonnaded streets, visit the hilltop temples, explore the chariot-racing stadium, and hear your voice amplified in the ancient theatre.

Next, we'll stop in Madaba - a town with a strong Christian heritage. Aptly dubbed the 'City of Mosaics', Madaba is home to hundreds of Byzantine-era mosaics, the most famous of these is a 6th-century map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, created with two million pieces of stone. We'll visit a workshop to learn how mosaics are made today before returning to Amman.

Back in Amman, there'll be time to explore the city further. Uncover the Temple of Hercules in the heart of the city and explore the art galleries, boutiques, and coffee shops in the downtown neighbourhood.

Meals Provided: Breakfast

This morning, we'll drive to the Dead Sea - the lowest point on earth. This unique body of water is the lowest point on the earth's surface. With a salt content of 33%, it's almost impossible to sink and we'll take a dip to experience the mysterious floating sensation. While we're there, you can cover yourself in the water's rejuvenating mud, famous for its healing properties. After your dip, feel free to unwind by the pool or at the bar - there are shower facilities to freshen up in, too.

Afterwards, we'll continue along the King's Highway - one of the oldest trading routes in the world, which once carried the treasure-laden caravan of Solomon. Our next stop is Kerak. This ancient Crusader stronghold is the most famous in a chain of fortresses built for the Holy War against Islam. We'll take time to learn about its history and explore the maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways.

From Kerak, we'll continue south to Siq al-Barid, also known as Little Petra. Our base for tonight is a traditional Bedouin camp located a ten-minute walk from the entrance to Little Petra. Feel free to take a stroll from the camp to the site and walk in the footsteps of the Nabateans as you explore the temples and tombs carved into the rocks. We'll gather at our camp to watch the sun sink into the dunes and share a traditional dinner before a spot of stargazing.

Little Petra Ammarin Bedouin Camp (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Camping

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

Today we begin two full days exploring Petra. This ancient city, carved into pink sandstone cliffs, has to be seen to be believed, but poet John Burgon beautifully described it as 'A rose-red city half as old as time'.

Our Explore Leader will guide us on a tour through Petra's highlights before a free afternoon to wander at our own pace. As you enter the site, you're led down a kilometre-long chasm (known as the Siq) where the towering canyon walls reach up to 200 metres high. At the end of the Siq sits the beating heart of the city, the Treasury - miraculously well-preserved, the façade stands at 43-metres-high. Beyond the Treasury, the ancient city becomes a sprawl of tombs and temples waiting to be explored. The Bedouin community who still live within Petra sell their wares and offer refreshments along the colonnaded streets. As the day goes on, you'll notice the façades change colour with the light as the early morning and late afternoon sun brings out red, pink, and orange highlights in the rocks.

Tonight, we'll stay in a hotel just a short walk from the entrance to Petra.

Edom Hotel (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Today is free for you to uncover more of Petra. Climb the steep path to the High Place of Sacrifice for a panorama over Wadi Araba and the Negev Desert or trek up to the Monastery - Petra's largest monument.

This evening, we'll gather as a group to visit a family in Wadi Musa to learn about local life and traditions over dinner. Our Explore Leader will talk us through some local dishes while we sip Bedouin tea.

Leaving Petra behind, today we'll embrace the nomadic lifestyle of the Bedouin and head into the dunes of Wadi Rum. We'll stop for lunch before continuing across the sands either on foot or camelback.

Described by T.E. Lawrence as 'vast, echoing and God-like…', Wadi Rum occupies 74,000 acres with its monolithic outcrops of granite rock and sandstone rising out of the blankets of sand. The Bedouins learned to live within this hostile environment 3000 years ago, adapting to the elements to perfect their nomadic way of life. To learn more about their history and culture, we'll visit a local family to share tea and stories.

Our base for tonight is Space Village Luxury Camp in the heart of the desert. Surrounded by dramatic sandstone mountains and huge sand dunes, we're transported far away from traffic, noise, and light pollution. We'll sleep in comfortable Bedouin-style tents that are comfortably furnished and have ensuite bathrooms. There's also a large communal dining tent where you can relax and stargaze after dinner.

Galaxies and Planet Camp (or similar)

Grade: Premium Tented Camp

Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a full-on few days exploring the highlights of Jordan, we'll head to Aqaba for downtime by the Red Sea. A resort town, Aqaba is where local Jordanians come to holiday, lounge on the beach and have a go at water sports. As Jordan's only seaport, the town is steeped in history and was used by King Solomon's ships as well as by the Nabateans as part of the trade route from Damascus to Egypt.

Our hotel for tonight is centrally located and has a rooftop bar to cool off in. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to get a flavour for local life, too.

City Tower Hotel (or similar)

Today is a free day for exploring Aqaba or relaxing at the beach. The port city is famous for its preserved coral reefs and sea life and our Explore Leader will be on hand to organise an optional sailing and snorkelling trip before we head back to Amman later in the afternoon.

Our tour of Jordan ends at our hotel in Amman.

There are no activities planned today, so you're free to depart at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day, luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you'd like an airport transfer, you need to depart from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM).

Is this the tour for you?

  • We'll move at a fast pace to pack in all of Jordan's highlights so expect some long bus journeys and daily travel.
  • During the summer months, it can get incredibly hot in Jordan - at sites like Petra, there's little shade, be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of water.
  • Jordan is a popular destination, meaning our hotels can get booked out quite quickly. This means that at times, our accommodation might be subject to change.
  • Jordanian food is delicious but fragrant, while western favourites can be found in the cities, you might want to think ahead and bring snacks for fussy eaters.
  • Jordan is an Islamic country and so many locals observe Ramadan. During this period, we might alter our itinerary slightly.

Trip information

During April to November days are generally sunny and hot without rain with temperatures around 32°C. In spring and autumn evenings can be cool and night temperatures can drop suddenly especially in the desert. Expect cold nights in winter (December to February) when temperatures can drop to around 0 degrees. Some rain should also be expected at this time of year.

Optional activities The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.

A selection of optional activities are listed below to help you budget for your Family adventure. Whilst the basic tour price you pay before you travel includes a great selection of highlights, we have also built in free time to allow you the flexibility to choose from a carefully selected range of additional excursions and activities or take time to relax, the choice is yours. At certain destinations along the way there may be several options to choose from and it may not be possible to fit all the activities in; your Explore Leader will be able to give advice on which are the most suitable for your family. Petra: Day 3: Live cooking course at the Red Cave restaurant followed by dinner JD25 per person Day 4: Cave BBQ supper in Little Petra including transfers JD30 per person Day 5: Return visit to Petra - no charge Day 5: Petra 'by night' (candlelit walk to The Treasury) JD17 per person, children under 10 free Wadi Rum: Day 6: Desert camel trek JD20 per person. This is not available in July and August due to the heat. Aqaba: Day 7 or 8: Snorkelling on coral reef plus transport JD35 per person Day 8: Snorkelling boat trip with lunch, tea and coffee. 4 to 5 hours in total with two snorkelling stops JD35 per person; Berenice Private Beach club - entrance fee JD10.00 per person.

Lightweight clothing is essential in midsummer, with a sun-hat and neck protection, though a sweater and light jacket are advisable for Wadi Rum. Early mornings can be very cold when camping in the desert. Winters in Jordan can be cold and it may snow, so please bring suitable warm clothing. We recommend a waterproof jacket in winter. Women are advised not to wear shorts or dresses that are too revealing as this can attract unwelcome attention in the streets of Moslem towns - loose fitting trousers or slacks are ideal. Women and older girls should also cover their head and shoulders when entering a mosque and men should wear long trousers.

Comfortable walking shoes or boots, trainers and sandals.

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of baggage and daypack. Remember you are expected to carry your own luggage so don't overload yourself.

Blankets and mattresses are provided, but we suggest you bring your own sleeping sheet. A personal water bottle, a towel and small torch are useful for the nights in Wadi Rum. You may also wish to bring your own snorkelling equipment. Water shoes are recommeded for the Dead Sea. Antibacterial hand wash, such as Travelproof's 'H20-No' water-less hand scrub (available through Explore Trader catalogue); try to avoid anti-bacterial wipes as these can pose a disposal proble.

Food and drink The costs for meals may vary depending upon location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given are an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the centre of a major city may charge more.

Foreign exchange, transport information, accommodation notes.

Jordanian hospitality is second to none and we choose our hotels to reflect that. However, due to the recent rise in tourism, many hotels are experiencing high demand and can become full very quickly. This can unfortunately lead to lower levels of service and quality. While we try our best to make sure our chosen accommodation is available to us, it is subject to change. For the confirmed hotel list for your departure, refer to your final documents. On this tour, we stay in mid-range, well-appointed hotels with ensuite facilities, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. In Amman, we stay at the edge of the old city, within walking distance of downtown. While in Petra, we'll stay close to the visitor's centre, giving us quick and easy access to the site. Our camp in Wadi Rum is situated deep in the desert. We camp in traditional Bedouin with all bedding provided. There is a toilet and shower block at the end of the site. Finally, in Aqaba, we'll stay in a modern hotel, close to the beach, with a rooftop restaurant and pool. Note that some hotel swimming pools operate separate timetables for men and women. Refer to your final document for your departure's confirmed hotel list.

Family swimming

All the hotels have a swimming pool and there is a chance to swim in the Red Sea at Aqaba and float in the Dead Sea. The swimming pool at the Toledo hotel in Amman is open to the public and operates segregated swimming based on gender, a timetable is available at the hotel reception.

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?  The water quality is poor and therefore it is recommended to avoid drinking tap water during your trip.
