Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve

Once a hunting reserve for Maharaja of Mysore Kingdom,  Bandipur National Park & Tiger Reserve  stands over 874 sq. km area today for the sole purpose of protecting the  endangered wildlife species  and saving the valuable sandalwood trees.

The reserve was declared a forest  Tiger Reserve in 1973  by  NTCA  under the protection of  Project Tiger  – Govt.’s ambitious campaign to  save Indian Tiger species .

Bandipur Tiger Reserve is located in Karnataka  and is wildly popular for its flora and fauna diversity.  Karnataka has the second-highest population of  tigers in India .

The management and upkeep of the reserve are known to be one of the best in the country.

History of Bandipur National Park

The foremost  Bandipur Sanctuary  was conceptualized and created in 1931. The project was patronized by Maharaja of the kingdom of Mysore. What he created was a protected area of 90 sq. km named as  Venugopala Wildlife Park .

Nearly two decades post-independence, around 800 sq. km of an area was amalgamated to Venugopala Wildlife Park. Thus,  Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve  came into being under the tiger project. This was in 1973.

Later, this reserve became an essential part of the  Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve , which is the  largest wildlife protected zone in South Indi a . In addition to the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve includes 643 sq. km of the adjoining  Nagarhole National Park , 320 sq. km of  Mudumalai National Park  and 344 sq. km of  Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Together they form 2,183 sq. km of the protected zone which is the  largest habitat of wild elephants in South Asia.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve Safari | Our Experience & What To Expect

Bandipur Bison

Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka is a Tiger Reserve well known for wildlife and a real forest experience. Located near Mysore, this is a nice destination for a weekend trip from Bangalore and Mysore. It is about 230 km from Bangalore and 75 Km from Mysore.

I had a breathtaking experience at Bandipur and sharing the same. This will also serve as a guide on how best you can spend your time here.

START EARLY

Start early in the morning from Bangalore. Early morning weather will be pleasant and you are also fresh and hence you can enjoy the drive.

Stop at Indradhanush – a Vegetarian Restaurant for Breakfast. This is approximately 75 km from Bangalore, after Ramanagar. I love the Neer Dose served here, but all breakfast items are good. Have a leisurely breakfast and enjoy your coffee. You can occupy the table adjacent to the garden to enjoy the cool breeze. Continue the journey after breakfast, but do not forget to taste tender coconut on the way with a short break.

You can now head straight to Bandipur. You will reach around 12.30-1 PM. It takes some 20-30 minutes to check into the room. There is only one eatery/ hotel which serves food and you have to depend on this only. So the moment you are fresh, inform the number of people for lunch which is essential here as the food is prepared based on the number of tourists.

Bandipur Cottage

BANDIPUR ACCOMMODATION

The rooms available in the forest guest house are decent, spacious and well ventilated. There are a few guest houses which have a portico with grills from where you can watch the animals during the night. If you are interested in watching the nightlife of deers and other rarer visitors, pick these cottages. The rooms can be booked online and for bigger groups, they provide dormitories also.

Room service is not available, you have to depend on the only restaurant available for food. If you are in a large group, you can request for a specific food, otherwise, the choice you get about food is limited.

There are many resorts around Bandipur giving an option of budget stays, and also luxury places. We opted to stay in the forest guest house.

SIMPLE YET TASTY FOOD

Thali

The lunch provided here is simple but tasty and sumptuous. Enjoy the lunch, but keep a watch on monkeys, which manage to enter inside through the small openings in the wall. It is fun watching them do all the circus. Post lunch, relax for some time in the cottage.

BANDIPUR SAFARI

Safari starts at 3.30 and the second at 5.30. Better you take 3.30 ride by a bus which will be a trip of about one and a half hours. Encounter with wild animals depends on your luck. You can certainly encounter elephants, but sighting other animals is not for sure. Going inside the deep jungle itself is an amazing experience.

After the safari, you can have some snacks and coffee and take a walk around the campus to grab some fresh oxygen. Enjoy the nature there is a small complex which has eateries and a shopping center. Watch the monkeys playing and creating nuisance here, it is fun.

As the sun sets a lot of guests to gather around the rooms. Yes, you can see hundreds of deer coming close to the rooms. You can see them in groups wherever you turn. They will run away if you go nearer so watch them from a distance. They can keep you occupied for hours by which time your tummy reminds you about dinner. Enjoy dinner at the same hotel. There will be a video playing about wildlife, watch them for some time after dinner. Now it is time to retire for the day.

BANDIPUR MORNING SAFARI

Bandipur Elephants

In the morning, I suggest you take a safari by Jeep. Take a long safari, i.e. double safari which will be for 3 hours. They will take you deep inside the jungle and visit all the water bodies in the forest. This enhances the chances of your encounter with wild animals. You will encounter wild buffaloes, some rare birds like kingfisher and peacock and deer. You will never realize how fast those 3 hours vanish. Every minute you will be holding your breath and watching and listening which is an experience by itself.

The chances of meeting wild beauties are better during morning times. My experience was thrilling. First, we encountered some wild buffaloes, then saw deers and peacocks, which did not excite us much. Then our guide-cum-driver showed us some pug marks which was an indication that the tiger was around that place.

Also one of the deer was making a peculiar cry and we were told that it is giving warning to other deers about the danger. But we were not lucky enough to see the tiger. We roamed in the deep forest for two and a half hours with no luck. We could only see a few kingfishers, some other small birds.

We were about to return disappointed. Lo and Behold then came to the surprise! We met a herd! A herd of 12-13 elephants. One younger elephant was putting its trunk across the way of its mother and the guide told us that the younger one was stopping its mother from moving towards us.

We watched them for about 10 minutes and then came the sudden trumpet from one of the elephants from the herd. Yet another one started pouring mud on itself. Our guide told it is time to move and we left the place. My first-time journey inside the deep forest was refreshing, exciting and pleasant.

BANDIPUR FROM BANGALORE

Bangalore is around 230 km from Himavad Gopalaswamy temple. It will take around 5 to 5½ hours with a break for coffee.

This trip will certainly leave a long-lasting memory which you will carry home. One the way back do not forget to shop for fresh vegetables and fruits for the next week!

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

One the way back, we visited Himavadgopalaswamy temple which is located on a hillock. As the name itself suggests, there is fog all around the temple.

The weather is cool around the year. It is a beautiful temple and the view from the temple is also panoramic. Since the area is frequented by wild animals, private vehicles are not allowed on the hill. You have to park your vehicle at the foot of the hill and travel further to the temple by Government bus.

Best Time to do Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari

Embarking on a Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari is a journey that can be enjoyed year-round, each season offering a unique perspective of the park’s vibrant ecosystem. However, to optimize your safari experience, considering the weather, wildlife activity, and visitor traffic is key. Here’s a guide to help you decide the best time for your adventure:

Weather Considerations

  • Summer (March to May) : With temperatures soaring up to 35°C, the landscape turns dry, drawing animals to watering holes, which can increase your chances of sightings, especially tigers. Despite the heat, the visibility is high, making it a favored season for wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Monsoon (June to September) : The park transforms into a lush paradise, though heavy rains may limit animal sightings as they seek shelter. This season offers a unique experience with fewer tourists and a vibrant, green backdrop, but be prepared for humid conditions and occasional safari route closures.
  • Winter (October to February) : The cool and pleasant climate, with temperatures dropping to 10°C, makes winter an ideal time for comfortable safaris. This season attracts elephants and other herbivores to the open, grazing on the lush grasslands, against a picturesque setting.

Wildlife Sightings

  • Summer : Exceptional for observing tigers, as well as a plethora of birds and reptiles congregating around water sources.
  • Monsoon : Less favorable for sightings due to dense foliage and animals’ preference to stay sheltered from the rain.
  • Winter : Excellent for viewing elephants and a variety of herbivores in their natural habitats, enjoying the fresh vegetation.

Visitor Traffic

  • Peak tourist times align with the summer and winter seasons, particularly on weekends and holidays, owing to the pleasant weather and optimal wildlife viewing conditions. To avoid crowds and enjoy a serene safari experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during the quieter monsoon season.

By aligning your visit with these insights, you can enhance your Bandipur Tiger Safari experience, whether you seek thrilling wildlife encounters, tranquil nature explorations, or simply the beauty of the changing seasons.

Where to Camp

Where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, nagarahole tiger reserve.

Nagarhole National Park and Tiger Reserve (also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park) is a place of unspoiled wilderness, with serene forests, bubbling streams, and tranquil lakes and reservoirs. The park gets its name from the snake-like Kabini River, the largest of the park's waterways, which lies to its south and separates it from Bandipur National Park. ( Nargar means "snake" and hole means "stream" in the native language). This area of India receives torrential rains during the monsoon season, providing a plethora of water resources to the abundant wildlife found in the park, including over 250 types of birds, elephants, sloth bear, bison, tiger, leopards, deer, and wild boar. This park was once an exclusive hunting preserve for the former rulers of Mysore in Karnataka. But today, the tiger population, as well as the park's other predators, are thriving. Book a jeep safari, embark on an elephant ride, check out cascading waterfalls, and visit a sacred temple for a bucket-list experience in Southern India.

Most visitors flock to Nagarhole National Park to check out the predator species and other exotic animals that call this place home. You can go about this in many ways: by booking a mini-bus safari tour and sharing the experience with 26 other people, arranging for a more intimate jeep safari with no more than eight people, hiring a boat or coracle to take you down the river on an unforgettable boat safari tour, or hopping on an elephant for a three-hour park stroll. It's possible to drive along the park's roads by yourself, as well, although you need to remain inside your vehicle, and stopping is not allowed.

You can also hire a guide and embark on one of the numerous walking trails in the park, some that follow the river's bank, putting you up close and personal with the park's wildlife. Don't try to hike by yourself or alone, however, as trained guides can alert you to the presence of dangerous animals and steer you to safety. Camping is not permitted inside the park due to the frequent encounters with tigers and other dangerous predators.

Visitors to Nagarhole National Park can also check out the neighboring Irupu Falls, a cascading waterfall that drops from a height of 170 feet in the dense forests of Western Ghats. You can also visit the town of Kutta. In fact, you might want to stay there, as it provides a central location for accessing the region's sites and immerses you in the authentic rural life in this country.

Some visitors also opt for a trip to neighboring Wayanad National Park, the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in the state of Kerala and home to many species of endangered flora and fauna.

Best Hikes & Trails

Nagarhole National Park is one of the few wild parks in India where you can hike in predator country with a trained guide. The walking paths are suitable for a range of hikers, from avid to novice, and some follow the river, while others take you through forested regions.

  • North Nagarhole Walking Trail : This trekking trail is located in the north section of the park on the banks of the Kabini River. Hiking this trail provides several options to view different species of birds and herds of animals as they congregate at this water source.
  • South-East Nagarhole Walking Trail : This trail is best suited for experienced hikers who don't mind wet and slippery conditions. It meanders through a deciduous forest where the trail sometimes becomes overgrown and not easily navigable. A guide will assure the best route and help lead you away from dangerous animals.
  • Central Nagarhole Walking Trail : This short trail is frequented by tourists and is one of the only trails that doesn't require a guide. It's a great jaunt to go on if you want to see elephants, gaur, and deer.
  • West Nagarhole Walking Trail : Forested valleys, waterfalls, and streams are among the highlights of this trail used for spotting tree-dwelling wildlife. But, stay away from the banks of the river, as crocodiles and snakes may be located underfoot.

In order to venture deep inside the park, you'll need to book a safari. Private jeep safaris were banned in 2011, making the only drivable safari options a minibus or a jeep booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts (owned by the Karnataka government). You can also book a boat safari through the government-owned lodge. Whatever you choose, make sure to pre-book your trip before your stay to assure your spot.

  • Minibus (Canter) Safaris: These noisy, 26-seater, forest department-operated buses run twice a day: from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the morning, and then again in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost to ride one is higher for foreigners than it is for India's natives and tickets can be purchased online or in person at the booking gates 30 minutes prior to departure.
  • Jeep and Boat Safaris : Your hotel stay at Jungle Lodges & Resorts will assure your place on this safari. If you stay at the Kabini River Lodge, the cost is included in the hotel tariff. If you choose to book another lodging option through Jungle Lodges & Resorts, expect to pay an extra safari fee dictated by the category of vehicle you book. The jeep safaris depart from the Kabini River Lodge in the morning at 6:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Depending on the occupancy of the hotels in the area, there will usually be four to eight people in a jeep. Government-operated boat trips also depart from the Kabini River Lodge at the same time.

While primitive camping is not permitted within the park, you can choose from a few glamping options in Mysore and Kabini. Do note that this style of camping comes complete with resort amenities. Still, you'll be sleeping in a canvas cottage surrounded by the sounds of nature.

  • Kabini River Lodge : The Kabini River Lodge is a Jungle Lodges & Resorts property located on the river in Kabini. It's a popular lodging choice, as they offer packages that include boating, jeep safaris, and elephant rides. Enjoy your stay in one of their tented cottages, complete with two twin beds, a bathroom, a coffee maker, and a wake-up service. (You can also upgrade to a cottage or a hotel room for an additional charge.)
  • Jungle Inn : The Jungle Inn in Mysore offers Swiss tented cottages, complete with en-suite bathrooms, a veranda area, toiletries, and housekeeping (upon request). Packages here include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a film showing, a campfire, and seasonal hikes.

Nagarhole National Park is surrounded by accommodations, ranging from simple retreats to luxurious stays. Choose from rustic cottages with en-suite bathrooms or villas with private jetted pools and an on-site spa.

  • JLR Kings Sanctuary : Located at the northern edge of the park near Veeranahosahalli, JLR Kings Sanctuary is set among 34 acres of mango orchards and is a good budget option. Safaris are not included in the lodge's packages, but you can book one for an extra charge. For accommodations, choose from a cottage or suite, complete with a private bathroom, refrigerator, coffee maker, and television. There is also an inground pool on site.
  • Evolve Back : The luxury accommodations at Evolve Back in Kabini include your choice of a safari hut, a pool hut, and a pool reserve hut. But don't let the word "hut" mislead you, as these luxury villas all come with private jetted pools, a separate bedroom and living area, and private bathrooms. Choose from three on-site restaurants or a candlelit dinner cruise, and stop into the Ayurvedic spa to freshen up with a treatment post-safari.
  • Kaav Safari Lodge : Enjoy one of the luxury rooms with balconies at the Kaav Safari Lodge in Mysore. You can also choose from a luxury tent, complete with a clawfoot bathtub and office nook. Property amenities include a common-area lounge, a viewing deck, al fresco dining, and a pool. A bonfire barbecue is available on request, as well.

To reach Nagarhole National Park by air, book a flight to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, and then get a connecting flight from Bengaluru to Mysore. Mysore is the closest city to the park (94 kilometers or 58 miles away), where you can book a train directly to the park or make the journey by car. You can also hop on a bus in Mysore. The bus drops you at the HD Kote Bus Station (about 30 km or 18 miles from the park) where you can hire a taxi to take you the rest of the way.

The park has three main entrance gates, which are also the starting point for all safaris: Veeranahosahalli (near Hunsur) is on the northern side, Nanachi (near Kutta) is on the western side, and Antharasanthe (near Kabini) is on the eastern side towards Mysore. It takes about an hour to drive between all three entrances.

  • The roads that run through Nagarhole National Park are open daily from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., year-round.
  • If you're embarking on a safari, expect to pay a DSLR camera fee with rates indicative of the size of your lens.
  • The park has two separate safari zones: Zone A consists of a woodland area, and Zone B is a riparian zone on the Kabini backwaters. The Jungle Lodges & Resorts jeep safaris can cover only one of the zones at a time, while the Forest Department canter safaris can enter both zones, unrestricted, during one tour.
  • The best time to spot animals is during the summer, in March and April, when the waterholes are dry and the animals congregate near the lake. However, the temperature outside is more pleasant from November through February.
  • During the monsoon season (July through October) safaris may not operate due to muddy, impassable roads, and wildlife sightings are minimal.
  • The Kabini side of the park has the most tourist-friendly entrance and the best (albeit expensive) accommodations and facilities for jeep safaris.
  • Arrive an hour or two in advance in order to get tickets for the canter safaris. Demand can be high, especially on weekends. People start lining up early and seats are limited.
  • The best option for elephant viewing is by booking an afternoon boat ride.

Bandipur is among South India's most popular biospheres, established by broadening the Venugopal Wildlife Park, established by the Mysore Maharajas in 1931. Bandipur National Park is among India's most well-known tiger reserves, covering an area of 880 square kilometres. It is part of the 'Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve,' which serves as one of the last remaining safe havens for endangered Asiatic wild elephants, with Nagarhole National Park in the north, and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in the south. The park is bounded on the south by the Moyar River and on the north by the Kabini River. The park is bisected by the Nugu River. The park's highest peak is Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta hill. This national park, proudly located on the Mysore-Ooty road, enables you to go to the depth of the jungle and discover the wonderful wild world around you. The park's flora and fauna are diverse and include shrublands, dry deciduous forests, and moist deciduous forests. Bandipur's wider array of ecosystems accommodates a wide range of life forms. The real beauty of the Bandipur reserve forest wilderness is best experienced while riding in a safari jeep.

Bandipur National Park's History

The kings of the bordering kingdom of Mysore used to hunt in Bandipur National Park. The Maharaja of Mysore established Venugopala Wildlife Park in 1931. It was originally 90 square kilometres, but it was enlarged under Project Tiger in 1973 under the name Bandipur Tiger Reserve, contributing around 800 sq km to Venugopala Wildlife Park.

On public viewing roads, anybody can typically see chital, Indian giant squirrels, grey langurs, and elephants. Last Mile Activities in the Bandipur National Park

Activities in the Bandipur National Park

The listed below are some of the traveller's favourite Bandipur National Park events.

Get ready for the Bandipur safari

The Forest Department organizes jeep and bus safari twice a day. Bus safaris usually run for about 45 minutes in the morning until 9:00 a.m. and in the afternoon until 5:30 p.m. Jeep safaris are accessible for the exact length of time. Safari travel timelines and durations are determined by weather conditions and Jeep allocation.

Trek the scenic reserve

Aside from outings, a stroll through the wilderness will undoubtedly be enjoyable. You could walk through Bandipur Park with the assistance of a Forest ranger.

Riverside Investigation

The Moyar stream that flows to the east, a branch of the Cauvery, flows past Mudumalai, the southern edge of Bandipur Park, and Wayanad, moving through wood, oak forests, and latex. The Kabini River flows via Bandipur Park on the reserve's northern border. Enjoy the stunning dawn and dusk walks down the banks of the Kabini or mayor streams, which are frequently visited by elephants as well as other small animals during the warmer months.

Stay in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Choosing to stay at one of the Bandipur Resorts seems to be the best way to experience the area's natural beauty and wildlife. Keep in mind that Bandipur was among the locations selected for "Project Tiger," a preservation initiative aimed at saving the endangered Indian tiger. The tiger population in Bandipur has steadily risen over the past decade. Staying within one of the forest lodges provides an excellent opportunity to get up close and personal with the wonderful cat. Being among the finest tourist destinations in India, Bandipur simply happens to have many places to stay that can greet you. You could also stay in Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary lodge at the Ministry of Karnataka, which provides outings wildlife excursions, and landscape hikes with a guide. In the forest, there is rarely any silence. It's impressive to go to bed every night, soothed by the sounds of night songbirds, insects, and amphibians. Although there are numerous resorts and hotels in the area, nothing beats falling asleep in a cottage perched on a tree to truly appreciate the magnificence of the forest. Numerous resorts provide these amazing tiny cottages with modern amenities, letting you relax and enjoy a serene vacation overshadowed solely by the noises of animals roaming around or birds singing a song.

Weather Conditions and the Ideal Time to Visit Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Ideal Time to Visit Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Last Mile

Bandipur's climatic condition is pretty standard tropical, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The hot and dry season typically starts in March and lasts until the monsoons arrive in June. Winter is typically the best time to visit Bandipur National reserve, with mild temperatures, a light mist, and a soothing breeze.

Summertime March-May

Tall magnificent trees offer shelter from the burning rays of the sun, but dry deciduous forests provide little relief from the scorching heat.

Monsoon time June-September

With the arrival of rain, the forest transforms into a work of art. Wilderness has never been this great, but the roads have become slippery and slushy. Safaris could be cancelled.

Winter time November-February

During the winter time, Bandipur is foggy and delightful. On a cold winter day, the densely wooded regions around the Biligiriranga Hills appear so endearing. This is unquestionably the most favourable time to visit.

Last Mile tips before you travel to Bandipur National Park

Some tips before you travel to Bandipur National Park

From Monday to Friday, the park is ready to entertain from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you visit during the summer season, it's best to not go in the afternoon. The best time to visit is early morning since you are likely to see a significant number of animals at that hour. A significant proportion of monkeys live in this forest. When travelling, it is recommended that you keep the windows shut to prevent any unsafe monkey behaviour. Maintain your distance and refrain from eating when on safari. The weather is humid and hot nearly the whole year. If you visit between Oct. and Jan., the temperature might very well drop in the evening time or early in the morning. So dress accordingly. You can spend the night in the park with authorization from the forest department. It is illegal to travel through the woods. You could take a jeep or public transportation, like a bus. Every Bandipur safari is 45 minutes long. If you have a newborn, make sure you have adequate water and nutrition. In the end, Because Bandipur National Reserve is amongst the most travelled destinations in India, you should plan ahead of time. This sanctuary also includes an animal care centre where they can get help with their wellness and breeding issues. This facility provides care for injured animals. This reserve offers bird viewing tours as well as wildlife safaris. This park also contains a forest of very well-preserved sandalwood trees. Bandipur National Park is accessible all year and is only shut down in rare circumstances such as heavy flooding or environmental disasters such as wildfires.

The best way to reach Bandipur National park

Let's look at some travelling instructions to Bandipur National Park. Travelling by Air Take a flight to Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, which manages both domestic and international flights from across all major Indian cities. Then, rent a car from Bangalore airport to Bandipur, which is about 217 kilometres away, or fly directly to Mysore. Travelling by Train The MYS-CMNR Network connects Chamarajanagar to Mysore, Bangalore, and Tirupati railway stations. Nanjangud, about 50 kilometres from Bandipur, has a train station that supports Mysore services. Travelling by Road The stunning route from Mysore to Ooty via Bandipur includes views of streams and hills. You can drive, hire a taxi or take a bus from Mysore to Ooty via Gundlupet, where you'll arrive close to Bandipur Park.
