Charleston’s rich architectural history dates back to the 17th century. The Old Exchange Building represents the early, Colonial style. The Georgian period is characterized by symmetrical facades with a centered front entrance and 5 windows facing frontward. The Heyward Washington House is a great example. Beginning in the late 1700s this style gained in popularity and may be seen in many residences.  The Federalist period followed the Revolutionary war. Home designs incorporated lavish elements such as balconies, shutters, and palladium windows. The Rhett-Aiken House is a noted example of the Federalist architectural period.  As Charlestonians gained wealth they embraced the NeoClassical architectural style and constructed homes of considerable grandeur. This design period gained popularity in the years leading up to the Civil War. Neoclassical architecture is characterized by columns, smooth walls, and arched windows. The Charleston County Courthouse at the “Four Corners of Law” offers a good example of the Neoclassical architectural style in Charleston, South Carolina.

1. heyward-washington house.

Begin your tour at the infamous Heyward-Washington House . This Georgian-style double home offers the only glimpse at a kitchen building of this period. The home was constructed in 1772. This historically significant dwelling was the home of Thomas Heyward, Jr., one of the four South Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence. 

George Washington was a guest here during a visit to Charleston in 1791. This home served as the first home in the city to become a museum. The Heyward-Washington garden is a hidden gem behind the enclosed, brick walls.

Wealthy Charleston merchant Nathaniel Russell built the home for his family in 1808. The three story cantilevered staircase is a stunning centerpiece in this exceptional residence on the High Battery in Charleston.

4. Edmondston-Alston House

6. joseph manigault house.

The Manigaults became one of South Carolina’s leading families, working as rice planters and merchants in the 18th Century after fleeing religious persecution in Europe in the 1600’s.

Constructed in 1803, the Joseph Manigault House represents the urban lifestyle of a wealthy Southern rice plantation family.

This brick antebellum residence was designed by the Scottish, Neoclassical architect Robert Adam.

The exterior features a two story porch, elaborate windows and exterior doors. Inside, the interior is crafted in rich woodwork details as seen in the fireplace mantels, cornices, and doors. You’ll find period pieces and furniture from France, Europe and America as well as original color schemes throughout the rooms.  

The Joseph Manigault House, also referred to as Charleston’s Huguenot House was threatened with demolition, but a group of caring Charlestonians organized to save the home. It was purchased by the Charleston Museum in 1933 for purposes of preservation. 

This was the birth of the Preservation Society of Charleston .

Charleston Home Tour – Beautiful Southern Sophistication

A Charleston home tour similar yet different to last week’s home tour edition! In that tour we took a look at Julia Berolzheimer’s home . And while I adored her home interior design, such a distinctive look is not everyone’s cup of tea.

For those who like a similar look but prefer something a bit more subtle and toned down, I’m bringing you this stunning home! We’re visiting a house in the Charleston area that has a similar interior design, but this time, it’s a bit more toned-down version that I hope you’ll enjoy.

So, in this home tour edition, we’re exploring another home in the same area . This time, it’s a more relaxed and streamlined version that I’m sure you’ll appreciate!

Ready to dive in and take a look? Let’s get started.

Char leston Home Tour  

Nestled in the dreamy Charleston Harbor area, this home blends European sensibility with a laid-back Southern feel that beckons you in.

The welcoming porch has an unmistakable Southern vibe with chairs in white wicker.

A manicured outdoor space and ample windows fill this residence with natural light and beautiful views.

In the hub of the home, soft white pairs with marble on the walls, honey-colored hardwood floors, and glimmery gold accents.

The kitchen is spacious, and the counters -of a lovely Dutch white hue- stretch from wall to wall in an L-shape, offering plenty of space to keep the surfaces pristine.

Next to the kitchen, the butler’s pantry completely changes the color palette creating a dramatic look. A dark lustry black covers the walls, and window frames with black marble topping the black counters.

Black makes the gold details and the greenery from the outdoor views pop!

A formal dining room is something that you would definitely expect to see in a Charleston home tour! This dinging room features enchanting wallpaper with peacocks and delicate floral illustrations.

The sandy hue of the wallpaper mirrors the tones of the rug, with upholstered chairs and curtains adding a crisp white balance to the room.

In the home office, different style eras collide with traditional European pieces coastal-inspired ones, and plenty of artwork.

The built-in bookshelves with cabinets were painted in a greyish seafoam shade that’s carried to the matching molding and 2 seater sofa, enveloping the room beautifully.

The laundry room has a whimsical flair. The light brown oak cabinets with white and grey marble Harlequin floor tiles add a playful and stylish touch to such a practical space.

In the master bath, a lavish bathtub sits by large windows draped in elegance. The all-white setup creates such a luxurious and harmonious space, don’t you think?

Charleston Home Tour – Bedrooms

The main bedrooms show the very best of a traditional room with contemporary flair.

In one, a four-post bed in a rich monogamy hue and gentle patterned fabrics in soft blues and greens create a restful space.

The other has more personal touches with a gallery wall above the bed and a playful collection of pillows in different patterns sitting along the window bay seater.

Just like in our previous Charleston home tour, this home has plenty of rooms for the little ones!

Here, we can see a pretty room for a girl, with a plush large bed framed with a cornice box and curtains, all in soft whites and pinks.

The gentle pink hue is replicated along the windows and door frames as well as around the molding.

This alcove guest bedroom is a real standout! The geometric patterns on the striped wallpaper add a dramatic touch, complementing the already eye-catching architectural shape.

The blend of white and dark yellow colors works beautifully with the gold and wicker accents, giving off a charming old-world vibe.

That was certainly a lovely home tour! oh I loved it so much of it, I couldn’t get over the floors and the laundry room. usually laundry rooms can be overlooked but wow they certainly didn’t spare any detail there! I thought the porch was super pretty and the kitchen I really loved the kitchen. such a beautiful Southern home thank you for sharing!

DAY 3: CHARLESTON – BEAUFORT – SAVANNAH This morning visit the Edmonston-Alston House.  Despite the ravages of the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886 and numerous hurricanes, the Alston family pieces remain in place much as they have for over 150 years.  Notable in the collection is an original print of the Ordinance of Secession, portraits, dining room table, gas lights, mirrors, and exquisite interior woodwork.  Then, depart for the historic port city of Beaufort, a quaint 1711 town with narrow tree-lined streets and historic homes.  Enjoy a charming Carriage Ride through town.  Then travel to the fascinating city of Savannah, America’s first planned city, whose entire restored center – more than 1,000 buildings – is a National Historic Landmark, and check in for a two-night stay. DAY 4: SAVANNAH SIGHTSEEING This morning tour the restored Mercer-Williams House Museum designed by New York architect John S. Norris for General Hugh W. SIMONS ISLAND – JEKYLL ISLAND Today travel south to the Golden Isles of Georgia.  Visit St. Simons Island, known for its salt marshes and sandy beaches.  View famous Christ Church and the St. Simons Lighthouse which was destroyed during the Civil War & rebuilt in 1872.  This afternoon, arrive on Jekyll Island, a former hunting reserve for America’s top millionaires.  Goodyear, Pulitzer, and Rockefeller all built elaborate “cottages” here.  Stay 2 nights at the 1886 Jekyll Island Club, a Victorian-style hotel originally an exclusive retreat for the wealthy.  Jekyll Island becomes Holly Jolly Jekyll during the magical holiday season with over 500,000 light bulbs and 35,000 lights on the Great Tree.  (B) Overnight: Jekyll Island

PREMIER’S TRAVEL PROTECTION PLAN (TPP) $625 per person (must purchase with Initial Deposit) Part A – Cancellation Waiver provided by PWD I. Trip Cancellation Waiver (TCW) – Guarantees full refund on all payments, except the Trip Cancellation Waiver Fee itself in case of cancellation up to the time and date of departure due to the passenger’s personal illness or death of an immediate family  member.  Medical/official documentation required. Charleston’s historic homes offer holiday-centric tours

There’s nothing quite like Charleston in December. Don’t believe us? Head to these house tours to really get in the holiday spirit. And while you’re there, remember that wealthy white families weren’t the only ones celebrating the holidays centuries ago. Not all homes highlight the lives of the enslaved who lived and worked there, but those who do offer a rare glimpse into a history we should not forget.

Christmas on the Battery at the Edmondston-Alston House On Dec. 5 and 6, guests can take a theatrical candlelight tour of the historic Edmondston-Alston House along the Battery. Performers will be dressed in period costumes and will share stories of Christmases past in the Alston family. The tours will be given continuously both nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on-site. Advance tickets (and there are only a few left!) can be purchased at middletonplace.org .

Holiday Candlelight and Sarah Rutledge Dinner On Dec. 20 and Jan. 3, see the Middleton Place House Museum by candlelight at special self-guided tour, then head over to the restaurant for dinner with dishes inspired by Sarah Rutledge’s 1847 cookbook, The Carolina Housewife . Buy tickets online .

Holiday Spirituals Concert at Drayton Hall While not technically a house tour, the spirituals concert at Drayton Hall on Dec. 14 and 15 is still a special opportunity to see the inside of Drayton Hall; this is the only event that’s still held in the historic home. Guests will hear traditional spirituals from Ann Caldwell and the Magnolia Singers. You can buy tickets at draytonhall.org .

Charleston Strolls Holiday Walking Tour Throughout the month of December, Bulldog Tours is offering holiday walking tours of classic Charleston landmarks and historic homes. Guests can see everything from the Mills House to the Battery to private residences, all elaborately decorated for the holiday season. In addition, guests will learn about old Charlestowne holiday traditions and stories dating back to the 1600s. Tickets are $29 for adults, $19 for children ages 7 to 12, and children under 6 are free. Tickets can be purchased online .

Nathaniel Russell House This December guests can sip on a glass of wine while enjoying a candlelit tour of the seasonally decorated Nathaniel Russell House. Tours are offered at 6, 6:30, and 7 p.m. every Thurs., Fri., and Sat. from Dec. 5 through 21. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online .

Joseph Manigault House Built in 1803, the Joseph Manigault House reflects both the urban lifestyle of a wealthy, rice-planting family as well as the enslaved African-Americans who lived there. Dec. 6-31, enjoy the home decked out in Christmas finery, decorated by the Garden Club of Charleston. Buy tickets online .

Information about parking and pedi-cabs will be included with the maps and other information which will be sent to you via e-mail a day or two before the date of the tour.

Please come by the Confederate Home Garden, 23 Chalmers Street and show either your printed ticket or your e-ticket on your mobile device and pick up a wristband for entrance to each home/garden on tour.

In an effort to protect the privacy of those whose homes and gardens are on tour, maps and complete instructions about the tour will be sent to ticket buyers via e-mail a day or two before the start of the tour.
