Is the Bangkok GoCity Pass worth it? Review & Best Uses

Will you be visiting Bangkok, Thailand? Bangkok is a huge city with a lot to offer, and it can be a little overwhelming even for seasoned travelers.

The Bangkok GoCity Pass can be a great option to help you see the best of Bangkok with ease. We had the option to try it out for ourselves on a recent Thailand trip, so we can share what we’ve learned with you.

In this Bangkok GoCity Pass review, we’ll go over how the pass works, what’s included, and share a Bangkok GoCity Pass itinerary that will maximize your discount to the best attractions.

What is the Bangkok GoCity Pass? How it works

The Bangkok GoCity Pass gives access to Bangkok’s top attractions, tours, and activities at a flat price. You have control over your sightseeing and can save money compared to buying individual attraction tickets.

GoCity offers two types of Bangkok travel passes: the All-Inclusive Pass and the Explorer Pass .

Both types of tourist passes offer access to the same curated selection of activities, over 30 attractions and tours in Bangkok. The difference is in how each pass can be used.

Bangkok All-Inclusive Pass

The All-Inclusive Pass  is   available in 2, 3, 4, or 5-day passes . 

You can visit as many attractions as you like ( some limits apply ) and participate in as many pre-booked activities or flexible experiences as you want within the consecutive days that your pass is valid for .

The All-Inclusive pass is best for you if you want to see as much as possible and make the most of Bangkok in a short time.

Bangkok Explorer Pass

The Explorer Pass , on the other hand, is available in 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7-choice passes. This lets you select the number of top attractions or tours in Bangkok that you want to visit without a time crunch.

The explorer pass is valid for 60 days and there’s no need to decide which places you’ll visit before you purchase.

The Explorer pass is best for you if you want to spread out your sight-seeing and focus on a few top things to do.

How much is the Bangkok GoCity Pass?

The All-Inclusive Pass pricing currently includes four options. At the time of this writing, current prices are (in approximate US dollars):

Benefits of the Bangkok GoCity Pass

Convenience

Narrowing down what to do in Bangkok can be overwhelming. The GoCity Pass makes it easy to choose with their curated, pre-vetted list of tours.

While some activities on the pass do require advanced reservations, the process is easy to do online. Sign up for a time slot of your choice with your unique pass number, no additional purchases necessary.

Then, when you arrive at an attraction, simply show your digital pass to get in.

If you’re short on time, GoCity’s Bangkok travel pass eliminates extra trip planning research by curating the best things to do. 

We had other things to get done in Bangkok, like health check ups and our regular online work, which left little time for sight seeing. I just didn’t have the bandwidth for much pre-planning, so the Bangkok tourist pass allowed us to explore without spending tons of time figuring out a DIY itinerary.

The main reason to use an attractions pass is to save money, and you can do just that with the Bangkok GoCity Pass .

When using the card strategically, you can save up to 60% on admission costs.

People who save the most money with the All-Inclusive Pass are those who visit the most expensive attractions back-to-back. For the Explorer Pass, you save money by essentially “bundling” higher priced day tours and activities.

Is the Bangkok GoCity Pass worth it?

The Bangkok GoCity Pass can be a great value, depending on your trip goals and schedule. Let’s take a look at who the card is best for.

Who is the Bangkok GoCity Pass good for?

Here are the types of travelers who can get the most out of a Bangkok GoCity Pass.

First time visitors

If it’s your first time to Bangkok, Thailand, the GoCity Pass includes the top tourist attractions in Bangkok as well as some of the best day trips.

We met a couple visiting Bangkok for the first time who listed off the top three things they wanted to do during their visit: food tour, market tour, and cooking class. All three are included in the Pass, but they hadn’t heard of it so they missed out on saving some money!

Short trips

If you’re only in Bangkok for a few days, the GoCity All Inclusive Pass is a great way to maximize your itinerary. You can see and experience a lot with your planning streamlined through GoCity’s curated offerings.

Need help planning

Whether you’re overwhelmed with the options or just don’t want to bother doing tons of research, the GoCity Bangkok tourist card simplifies it.

Usually, I love trip planning but our recent visit to Bangkok was one time where I just didn’t have capacity to figure out the best things to do, how to arrange transportation for day trips, etc. Selecting tours from the Explorer Pass was a huge relief, then all we had to do was show up.

Families and Groups

There is a discount on the pass for children under 12. Travel costs can add up when you’re paying for multiple people, but for activities included on the Pass, there’s more to save.

Also, if you’re traveling with a group of 10 or more, you may be eligible for a group discount. Just contact GoCity.

When is the Bangkok GoCity Pass not worth it?

If you don’t plan to do very many of the activities included on the Bangkok GoCity Pass , then you’ll save more money just paying admission a la carte.

Some of the attractions can be booked separately on GetYourGuide .

Likewise, if you’re only interested in lower priced activities, like bicycle rentals, museums, or hop-on-hop-off transportation, then skip the tourist pass. These cheaper activities are especially not worth using up one of your Explorer Pass choices on, but they can be a good addition to an All Inclusive Pass itinerary.

Usually with other City Passes, if your schedule doesn’t allow for visiting attractions back-to-back, then I’d say the pass is not worth it. However, Bangkok’s Explorer Pass option works great in this case because you have 60 days to take advantage your attraction choices.

Finally, if you want a highly personal, customized tour experience of Bangkok, you’d be better off hiring a local guide for your stay or booking a multi-day private tour. It should be noted that public transit is not included in the pass, so you will need to figure out your own transportation to and from activities.

The activities included in the GoCity offerings include group tours which are well run and appeal to the average visitor, but don’t expect luxury or special treatment.  

Tips for getting the best value from the Bangkok GoCity Pass

To make the Bangkok Pass worth it, I highly recommend staying in the heart of Bangkok because many of the activities are centrally located. Even better if you’re close to River City Bangkok , which is the meeting point for several of the tours.

The Silom district or closer to the river would work well. We were a bit further out and did run into some traffic issues while trying to make it to the meeting point.

Using the Bangkok GoCity Pass for 2 days  

If you’re in Bangkok for two days and want to make the All-Inclusive Bangkok Pass worth it, start with the big ticket items.

For example, choose between the Thai Cooking Class or Grand Palace Walking Tour in the morning.

This will allow you to do the Michelin Guide Street Food Tour by Tuk Tuk or the Dinner Cruise on the same day. Plus, you could enjoy the Hop-On-Hop-Off boat between activities.

On the second day, I would recommend choosing a day trip like the Floating Market and Railway Market Tour or the trip to Ayutthaya Ancient Ruins .

Depending on traffic, these will drop you back in Bangkok between 3 and 5pm at MBK Mall, a central location with access to many public transit options.

Alternatively, you could stay in Bangkok and take advantage of multiple smaller tours and attractions.

To end day two, you could pre-schedule a dinner or an evening massage , just give yourself plenty of time for transit. Massages are available by reservation at four different Let’s Relax locations in town up until 10pm.

Bangkok GoCity Pass itinerary: 3 day Bangkok GoCity All Inclusive Pass

Actually, your itinerary can become even more valuable with the 3 day pass, since the All-Inclusive  pricing is only about $30 more to add a day.

With a three day itinerary, the recommendations are the same as above, but you wouldn’t have to choose between tours mentioned.

For example, you could do: Day 1 – Thai Cooking Class, Hop On Hop Off Boat or Bike Rental, Tuk-Tuk Food Tour Day 2 – Grand Palace Walking Tour, Museum or Amusement Park visits, Dinner Cruise Day 3 – Floating Market and Railway Market Tour, Massage

Budget Break Down: A la carte cost for attractions: ~$266 Cost of 3 day GoCity pass: $121 Savings with GoCity card: $145 (55%)

Getting the most out of the Explorer Pass for longer Bangkok stays

If you’re like us, cramming all your Bangkok sightseeing back-to-back in a few short days is not going to work. That’s where the Explorer Pass comes in.

You can spread out your activity choices over the 60 day validity period. For this reason, when using an Explorer Pass, your itinerary can be much more flexible. 

In some ways, it’s easier to tell if the Explorer Pass will be worth the cost. Your savings are directly related to the attractions you select, not how many things you can do in a day. 

A general rule of thumb to make the most of the Explorer Pass is to use it on activities that are at least 675 baht ($20) in value. Fortunately, about two thirds of the GoCity activities qualify.

Let’s look at a three day Bangkok itinerary with the GoCity 3-Choice Explorer Pass. Keep in mind that you could spread out the days you use the pass.

For example, you could do: Day 1 – Michelin Street Food Tuk-Tuk Food Tour Day 2 – Thai Cooking Class Day 3 – Ayutthaya Day Tour to 4 Temples

Budget Break Down: A la carte cost for attractions: ~$125 Cost of 3-choice GoCity Explorer pass: $58.50 Savings with GoCity card: ~$67 (53%)

Our personal choice was to do the Tuk-Tuk Food Tour, Floating Market and Railway Market Tour, and then the Ayutthaya Day Tour.

Damnoen Saduak Market and Maeklong Railway Market

We actually had the same tour guide, Kay, on our food tour as well as our market tour later in the week.

Both tours are run by GoCity’s partner, BigCountry Experiences, and it starts by getting yourself to the meeting point: River City, a shopping center along the river.

On the food tour, we had our own tuk tuk driver and went around Chinatown in a small group with the tour guide and two other pairs of other participants.

For the market tour, there were groups of 10 to 12 per guide and we road in air-conditioned mini vans to the two destinations outside the city, plus a short ride on a third-class railcar that pulls right into the market.

Kay shared cultural and historical information with us and was good about letting us know what to expect throughout the tour. She let us know that the tour ends in a different location and ensured that we could find our way back to our accommodations via our choice of public transit or Grab/taxi.

Ayutthaya Day Tour to 4 Temples

Ayutthaya is a significant archeological site a couple hours outside of Bangkok. Often compared to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, this is a great day trip and stark contrast from the big city.

This day tour provided air-conditioned bus transportation to four temples with an English-speaking guide. Water and a simple Thai lunch were also provided.

After a short intro about the historical significance of each temple, our guide gave us time to explore the grounds on our own.

I found it to be a nice balance between guidance and independence, with plenty of time to explore and get a sense of this incredible place.

While we could have figured out how to visit Ayutthaya on our own, it was much easier to have our transportation, itinerary, and lunch already taken care of.

How much money can you save with the Bangkok GoCity Pass?

How much you save will depend on your itinerary. If you were to max out the Bangkok GoCity Pass, you could save more than $175, or 60% off attractions. 

It really depends on your itinerary and activity choices.

How to buy the Bangkok GoCity Pass

Does it sound like the Bangkok GoCity Pass is right for you? If so, buy your Bangkok GoCity Pass here .

After purchasing the pass, you will receive an order confirmation in your email. You have three options on how to get your pass.

First, you can download the GoCity app and add your pass to the app . Instructions on how to sync your pass to the GoCity app will be provided in the confirmation email.

Adding the pass to the GoCity app will not activate the pass.

Second option is you can print your pass using the link in your confirmation email.

And third option is to show a version of the pass on your phone through the link in your confirmation email .

The important thing is to be able to show your QR code to be scanned at the attraction. You may also need the corresponding Pass Number when making advanced reservations for certain activities.

When you get to each attraction, tour, or activity, simply show your pass with QR code for entry.

The pass will be activated the first time you use it.

You can then visit as many attractions as you like using the All-Inclusive pass within the number of days you chose the pass to be valid for. For the Explorer pass, you have 60 days to visit the number of attractions your pass grants you.

Please note that the Bangkok GoCity Pass is subject to a Purse Value, which is based on the validity period of the pass. The purse value is the maximum amount you can use based on the standard gate price for each attraction. For example, with the 2-day adult All-Inclusive Pass, you can visit as many attractions up to the total value of $414.81.

In my experience, it would be a stretch to go over the purse value amount, so most travelers won’t have to worry about these limits.

Bangkok GoCity Pass Review: Conclusion

Using the GoCity Bangkok Travel Pass allowed us to see much more of Bangkok than we would have otherwise. With limited time to figure out what to do in Bangkok, beyond our scheduled appointments and online work, the city card gave us an opportunity to fit in some great day trips.

Granted, the activities focus on popular tourist activities, so it’s not the thing to do if you want to get really off the beaten path.

I think the Bangkok city pass is a good value if you’re looking for convenience, time savings, and don’t mind small group experiences with other tourists.

FYI You need to amend your blog regarding the all-inclusive aspect. It is NOT all inclusive. You can only make reservations for 2 activities per day for activities requiring reservations which, in this case, is most of them.

Hi Grace. Thank you for visiting our blog and providing this feedback. There are two types of passes available. One of those types is named “All Inclusive” and yes, it does have some limits. We found that the activities that require reservations tend to be more substantial in both value and time, so it’s not often feasible to fit in more reserved activities per day to begin with. But we agree that the reservation requirement is definitely something to be aware of, especially with that type of pass.

How Does It Work?

By Air: Bangkok has two airports and is very well connected with various other local and international airports. Go City launches tourist pass in Bangkok

With a revival of tourism in Thailand and Asia-Pacific in sight, Go City, the world's largest multi-attraction pass provider, is expanding its footprint in the region, including Bangkok, to boost travel operators.

Jon Owen, chief executive of Go City, said that after the pandemic put its transactions on hold for months, a strong rebound was seen first in the US, with domestic travel back to normal, followed by Europe, which has seen a 70-80% recovery.

Asia-Pacific might be slow to reopen when compared to other regions, but the recent resumption of travel has prompted Go City to reintroduce its product to this market in a bid to serve both inbound demand to Thailand and outbound Thai tourists.

Mr Owen said Go City's business model aims to provide a combined pack of attractions, experiences and tours for a single price. It currently provides passes in over 30 major cities globally, with 3 million active customers and a 30% share of the global market for this kind of service.

This year, the company made Bangkok one of its new locations in Asia-Pacific, along with Tokyo, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur, after previously launching in Singapore and Hong Kong.

"We've partnered with 30 attractions and tours in Bangkok and plan to include 10-15 more in our pass, as the city continues to see high demand from Europeans and US tourists," Mr Owen said.

Meanwhile, the company aims to promote the Go City pass in other cities to Thai customers as simplified travel rules have enabled more local people to take outbound trips. Prior to the pandemic, Thai travellers made up the fifth-largest market in the region, with the London Pass the best-selling product.

Mr Owen said the number of site visits by Go City pass holders was five times higher than the average tourist as they wanted to make the most of it.

However, the key point is to help less well-known attractions gain more visitors as those who purchase 1-, 2- or 3-day passes would use their time to explore new places.

Attractions available in Bangkok include the King Power Mahanakhon Skywalk, Chinatown Food Tour, Chao Phraya River Dinner Cruise, and Tuk Tuk Night Tour.

Mr Owen said the firm invested US$35 million in technology during the pandemic to tap digitally-savvy customers and provide tech to help operators digitalise their ticketing services.

What is Thailand Pass?

The Thailand Pass system is a free-of-charge web-based system designed to make the documentation process of travelers entering Thailand more efficient and faster. The Thai Pass QR code is required for all travelers entering Thailand.

The application will be approved by the central authorities in Thailand and not the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. Therefore, please allow sufficient time for approval after registering for the Thailand Pass.

The goal of the system is to help support the country’s “Ease of Travel” system after it reopens and to expedite filling out information and uploading travel documents.

Who Can Apply for the Thailand Pass

Thai Pass is required for all travelers entering Thailand, whether they be Thai nationals or foreigners.

From May 1, 2022, Thai Pass application and approval requirements will depend on a traveler’s vaccination status.

• Fully Vaccinated travelers will be able to enter Thailand under the No Quarantine program. A vaccinated traveler does not need to book 1 night’s accommodation in an approved SHA+ hotel or complete an RT-PCR test on arrival.Fully vaccinated foreigners will need to provide proof of COVID insurance and their vaccination certificate when applying for Thailand Pass. Thai Nationals only need to provide their vaccination certificate as insurance is not required. Unvaccinated children under 18 years old may travel with vaccinated parents without quarantine. The parents must include the children’s personal information in the application.
• Unvaccinated travelers will be able to enter Thailand under the existing 5-day Alternate Quarantine program; OR
• Unvaccinated travelers will be able to enter the No Quarantine program by completing an RT-PCR test and uploading the result into their Thai Pass application. The test cannot be older than 72 hours before their departure date.

What are the Requirements for the Thailand Pass

To support “Ease of Travel’, entry requirements have been eased from May 1, 2022. You can now apply with fewer documents and obtain a QR entry code faster.

The document requirements are listed below.

Vaccinated travelers (No Quarantine)

• Your passport profile page
• A certificate of full (2 doses) vaccination or vaccine card
• A medical insurance policy with at least USD$ 10,000 minimum coverage

Unvaccinated travelers (No Quarantine)

• An RT-PCR test result no more than 72 hours before your departure date

Unvaccinated travelers doing Alternate Quarantine program

• Confirmed booking of SHA+ hotel 5-day Alternate Quarantine package
• A pre-booked RT-PCR test on arrival (if not included in your package)

Proof of Vaccination

For vaccinated travelers entering under the No Quarantine program, you must prepare your vaccination certificate or card. The file must be in JPG, JPEG, or PNG.

For unvaccinated travelers who would like to enter Thailand under the No Quarantine program, instead of submitting a vaccination certificate or card, you must submit a negative result of the RT PCR COVID-19 test issued within 72 hours before traveling to Thailand.

Flight Details

The next step of the process is to book your flight to Thailand. Although it is not required to submit a proof of flight booking, the Thai Pass system will require the following information of your flight:

• Country of Departure
• Date of Arrival in Thailand
• Flight Number 
• Estimated Exit Date from Thailand  

Hotel Booking or Address  in Thailand

The Thailand Pass system does not require travelers to provide a hotel booking as well. However, you will be required to provide an address in Thailand. If you will be staying in private accommodation you may provide the address.

How to Apply for Thailand Pass

The Thailand Pass System is a QR code generating system. To obtain a QR entry code or Thai Pass ID, travelers will have to:

• Register at the official web portal
• Input personal details
• Upload the required documents per their vaccination status
• Receive a confirmation email after registration (within seconds after registration)
• Wait for the approval (normally within 1-3 days)

And if approved, you will receive an email with your QR Entry Code or ID, which you will use upon entering Thailand.

In this part, you will provide your full name as stated in your passport or travel document, nationality, passport number, date of birth, contact number, and email address. Also in this part, children under the age of 18 years will be added to the parent or guardian.

Step 4. Upload Proof of Vaccination or RT PCR Test

In this part, you will provide your vaccination information. You will provide the name or brand of your latest vaccination. You will be able to upload a JPG or PNG file of your proof of vaccination.

For faster processing of your Thailand Pass, it is recommended to also upload the QR code of your vaccination document if it is available.

Step 5: Provide Your Hotel Details or Address in Thailand

In this part, you will be required to provide the details of your address in Thailand or your hotel reservation.

If you are staying in a hotel, you can also validate your reservation if you booked through Agoda.com :

Step 6: Submit your Travel Insurance

In this part, you will provide the COVID 19 Insurance. You must upload the certificate of insurance. Based on experience, it is recommended to use AXA Thailand Insurance as it is the best insurance provider and they will issue a one-page document written specifically for your Thai Pass application.

Step 7: Review the Summary of your Thailand Pass Application

This is the last part of the application process. You will have a summary of your application. Please check all information that you have provided and if everything is correct, you may submit the application.

You will then receive your 6-digit access code which will appear on your screen and it will also be sent to your registered email.

How long does it take to Process the Thailand Pass

The processing time for the application is up to 2 hours depending on the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Disease Control office. There are instances when the registration will take a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. It is recommended to apply for the Thailand pass at least 2 days before your intended departure.

How to Check the Status of Your Application

To check the status of your Thailand Pass application, you may go to: https://tp.consular.go.th/en/check-status

If the status states ‘Reviewing’, it means you need to wait a day or two for the result.

If the status states ‘Approved’, you can download the file or save it on your mobile phone.

Once you have been approved, you can download your Thai Pass QR code or you will also receive it through email. For vaccinated travelers and their dependents, they may use the Thai Pass QR code within 3 days after the estimated arrival date in case of flight delays.

Take note that Thailand Pass is not a visa and it is not a permit to stay in Thailand. It is just a permit to enter Thailand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have read that from 1st july 2022 a Thailand pass and proof of medical insurance is no longer needed. That is great news. We are travelling to Thailand on 2th of august with 3 children. My wife and I are fully vaccinated.

On June 27, yes. If your next travel will be July 1 onwards, Thailand Pass will be removed so it’s not necessary.

Public Transportation Discount Cards in Bangkok, Thailand

Public transportation in Bangkok, Thailand is safe, reliable and cheap. Most tourists visiting Bangkok use the sky train, underground train or boats to see the city, but end up paying full fares as they don’t understand the city’s discount travel cards and passes. With savings up to 30% of regular fares on trains and boats in Bangkok, why pay full price if you don’t have to. Look at these Bangkok discount travel passes and cards. You’ll be happy you did.

Bangkok’s BTS Sky Train – One of the best forms of public transportation in Bangkok, the sky train system goes to most major areas of the city for a relatively inexpensive price. Known as the BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit), the sky train has two discount travel cards, perfect for tourists and with savings from 10-30% on each fare, depending where in Bangkok you travel and which discount travel card you buy.

Cards can be bought at the kiosk at any BTS sky train station.

BTS One-Day Pass – If you’ll be traveling to various places in Bangkok on just one day, then your best bet is to buy a BTS One-Day Pass. Each card costs 120 baht (approximately $4), but with that card you can travel on the BTS all day from the first train at 6am to the last train at midnight – unlimited times, unlimited trains, unlimited destinations.

Considering an average BTS train ride is 35 baht ($1.20), then all you have to do is take four train trips during a one day period and you’ve already saved money. Should you be getting on and off the sky train numerous times during one day, this card is easily your best bet.

Adult SmartPass – If you’ll be in Bangkok for a few days and likely to be using the sky train a lot, purchase an Adult SmartPass at a BTS kiosk.

An Adult SmartPass can be purchased for a specific number of trips – 15, 25, 35 and 45 trips – with a varying price depending on the number of trips you purchase. This card lasts for five years though so, if you’ll be in and out of Bangkok several times you can buy one for 45 trips, as you’ll always be able to use it.

Depending on the number of trips you purchase, each journey is a certain percentage cheaper than a regular ticket. For instance, if you buy a 15-trip pass, the cost of each trip is 23 baht (81 cents). If you pay for a 45-trip pass, the cost of each trip falls to 20 baht (75 cents) – no matter where you travel on the BTS in Bangkok.

MRT Underground Train Travel Pass – Tourists will also love using Bangkok’s underground train system or MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), as it covers much of the city the BTS doesn’t. The MRT also offers a discount travel card perfect for tourists wanting to save a bit of money.

MRT Period Pass – For tourists, the best card is an MRT Period Pass. These can be purchased for specific periods – 1-Day, 3-Day, 15-Day or 30-Day periods. Once you have the card, like the BTS, the MRT allows you unlimited trips on any train during the time of the Period Pass. Depending on which card you purchase and which stations you travel to, you save 10-50% or more.

Child/Elder Pass – The MRT also issues Child and Elder Period Pass cards, with special prices for children under 14 and for adults over age 65.

The Tourist Boat One-Day Pass – If you take any of the ferry boats going up and down or across the Chao Praya, they’re so cheap there’s no real reason for them to ever issue a tourist discount pass. With trips as cheap as 10 baht (30 cents) to travel more than 10 miles upriver or down river, you’ll barely miss the money.

But, there is a special discount pass for tourists on a Tourist Boat that ferries up and down the Chao Praya River all day and it’s a very good deal.

The Chao Praya Tourist Boat pass costs 120 baht ($3.75) and allows you to get on and off the tourist boat all day for the same price. Boats start at the Saphan Thaksin boat pier and go all the way up the Chao Praya stopping at 10 piers on the way there and back. The first boat leaves at 9:30 am and, from then on, they run every 30 minutes until 4pm. Your 120 baht price also gets you a free bottle of water, a map and a boat timetable, and a tour guide who will tell you all about the various sights as your boat goes up and down the river.

The Chao Praya Tourist boat is a wonderful way to see the traditional river life of Bangkok and, as you can get on and off to your heart’s content, you can cover a lot of ground too.

Using the BTS, MRT, River Taxis, and Other Transportation Options

With a rush hour that seems to run from morning until evening, getting around Bangkok can test the strongest nerves. Colorful taxis perpetually clog the city’s major thoroughfares.

Fortunately, there are other options! The BTS (Skytrain), MRT (subway), and river taxi networks are extensive. Unless you’re staying near the Khao San Road area where trains don’t yet reach, avoid burning your trip time sitting in gridlocked traffic.

How to Ride the BTS Skytrain

Bangkok’s Skytrain is an excellent choice for moving between busy areas , particularly along Sukhumvit Road where traffic is frequently at a standstill. Looking down at all those brake lights as you speed by above feels good!

The heart of the Skytrain network is Siam Station, a massive interchange connecting the two BTS lines: Sukhumvit (light green on maps) and Silom (dark green on maps).

• Hours: Trains run every 5-10 minutes from approximately 5:30 a.m. until midnight; schedules vary about 30 minutes, depending on the station. Ticketing offices are open from 6 a.m. to midnight, but big public holidays can affect hours.
• Fares: Prices for single journeys are calculated by distance and range from 16-59 baht (between 50 cents and $1.90). Ticketing machines clearly display the cost from your current station. The average cost of a one-way trip is usually a dollar or less. A one-day pass for 24 hours of unlimited rides costs 140 baht (around $4.50).
• Ticketing: The BTS uses ticket cards available from machines (many only accept coins) or the ticketing window (if it’s open). Tickets aren’t checked on trains, but they are required to exit the turnstiles at your destination, so keep it handy! If you lose your ticket or exceed more than two hours on the “inside,” you’ll need to wait for an attendant and pay the maximum fare.
• Accessibility: Some BTS stations have escalators while others have a lot of stairs to climb. All stations have elevators excluding Saphan Taksin Station, the interchange for the river taxi system.
• Getting to and From the Airport: Phaya Thai Station on the Sukhumvit Line connects to the Airport Rail Link.

How to Ride the MRT Subway

Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rail Transit feels a bit slower than the Skytrain, but it’s every bit as useful. Over 400,000 daily passengers use the subway for avoiding traffic on the surface. The MRT currently has two lines: the Blue Line (the busiest) and the Purple Line.

The interchange for the Blue Line and Purple Line is Tao Poon Station.

• Hours: The MRT runs from approximately 6 a.m. until midnight. Trains run every 5-10 minutes, depending on time of day.
• Fares : Prices are based on distance covered and range from 15-50 baht (between 45 cents and $1.60). An average-length journey will cost around a dollar or less.
• Ticketing: Ticketing machines for the MRT accept small denominations of Thai baht and vend an RFID token that is tapped for entrance to the platforms. The token must be surrendered to exit.
• Accessibility: All MRT stations have elevators.
• BTS Transfers: The MRT crosses the BTS Skytrain at Sala Daeng, Asok, and Mo Chit. You’ll need to get a new ticket.
• Getting to/from the Airport: Phetchaburi Station is connected to Makkasan Station on the Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) .

Using the Trains in Bangkok

Hua Lamphong Station located near Chinatown serves as hub for the long-haul surface trains and MRT. The aging behemoth dates back to 1916 and is set to be converted into a museum in 2021 . The new station located in Bang Sue will become Southeast Asia’s largest train station. Outside of Bangkok, Hua Lamphong Station is more commonly known as Krungthep (Bangkok) Station.

The expected restrictions — no smoking, eating, and drinking — apply for all stations and trains in Bangkok. Some visitors are surprised to learn that photography and video are also prohibited.

On all public transportation options in Bangkok, you should be prepared to give up your seat to any monks and pregnant women when they board.

How to Ride Bangkok’s River Taxi Boats

Unless staying at one of the riverside hotels in Silom, many travelers don’t make use of the riverboat taxis while in Bangkok. The colored-flag system and quick, chaotic loading and unloading at piers (with whistle blowing) can be intimidating at first, but leveraging the mighty Chao Phraya River only makes sense for avoiding traffic. Plus, river taxis are an economical way to cover some distance in Bangkok . Fares for a scenic journey can be as cheap as 30 cents! An all-day pass costs just $3 around 100 baht). Sathorn Pier is the stop nearest to a BTS Skytrain station (Saphan Taksin station on the Silom Line).

How to Ride Buses in Bangkok

Bangkok’s soot-choked buses are the slowest, most complicated option for getting around — tourists rarely bother. Pay the conductor on the bus, and have small change available. Don’t expect much assistance in English.

Other Transit Options

Going by road is the least efficient way to get around in Bangkok. Regardless, sometimes you have to do it, particularly if staying in a neighborhood such as Banglamphu where public transportation options are limited.

Taxis in Bangkok

With a strong taxi “mafia” in place, you’ll need some luck on your side for a good taxi experience in Bangkok. Finding an honest driver is still possible , but patience is required.

All taxis have meters installed. Many drivers balk at using them because they prefer to keep inflated fares off the record. If a driver quotes you a price rather than switches on the meter, try another. Taxis will often queue behind one another for your business.

• Hail taxis on the move rather than using ones parked in tourist areas.
• Avoid the freelance drivers. Sharply dressed drivers with well-maintained cars are more likely to work for actual taxi companies than the local taxi mafia.
• After hailing a taxi, ensure the driver will use the meter.
• Once in a taxi, follow the route on Google Maps. Doing so can sometimes discourage drivers from taking the long way around because you demanded the meter.
• Tipping isn’t expected , but you can round up the fare for friendly service.
• Passengers are responsible for any tolls.

Note: Never get inside any vehicle in Bangkok without first agreeing to a set fare or use of the meter. Once on your way, you are obligated to pay whatever the driver asks.

Ridesharing Services in Bangkok

Ridesharing services cost slightly more than taxis, but you can avoid much of the hassle and upselling. In March 2018, Uber handed operations over to Southeast Asia’s favorite ridesharing app, Grab .
