Sanbona Wildlife Reserve: Rock Art + Authentic Wildlife Experiences near Cape Town

By Inside Guide

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Things To Do

A wildlife paradise with spectacular ancient rock art just three hours from Cape Town.

A mere three or so hours along the eminently drivable Route 62 lies Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – a secluded sanctuary where wildlife roam free in over 58 000 hectares of sacred wilderness. Found below the purple folds of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, this malaria-free wildlife reserve in the heart of the Little Karoo is the Western Cape’s answer to a luxe safari experience; its off-the-radar setting provides the type of privacy and discretion that makes the rest of the world seem irrelevant.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Things To Do Game Drives

Guests have the option of staying at Dwyka Tented Lodge (for a special occasion or romantic getaway), Tilney Manor (currently closed) and Gondwana Family Lodge (for a stylish getaway that’ll satisfy kids and grown-ups alike). There’s also Explorer Camp : a two-day walking safari with tented accommodation, designed for those seeking an immersive escape in nature.

Here are five reasons to book your stay:

1. Ancient rock art

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Things To Do Rock Art

One of the lesser-hyped highlights of a visit to Sanbona is a visit to the ancient rock art, which dates back 3 500 years, and depicts the lives, customs and beliefs of the San and Khoikhoi tribes who live here. Their story is a tragic one, having been driven off their land and displaced by European settlers.

There are seven recorded viewing sites within Sanbona – all of which offer a fascinating and unforgettable glimpse into an almost-forgotten national heritage.

The San paintings mainly depict animals, people and beings, and are done in a darker red colour due to the ochre they used. The Khoikhoi paintings are more symbolic in style and more orange in hue. Paint was made from ochre, calcrete, animal blood, animal fat, plant sap, and ostrich eggs, which they ground to a paste.

What’s striking is the beautifully symbiotic relationship these ancient people had with their environment.

2. The Big (+ Little) 5

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Things To Do Wildlife

Elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo and lion all call the wild Karoo plains of Sanbona home. As do some lesser-known species that aren’t exactly larger than life, but are extremely special in their own right! Keep your eyes peeled for the Little 5, namely the elephant shrew, buffalo weaver bird, rhinoceros beetle, leopard tortoise and antlion! Whether you’re here to witness the ground-rumbling roar of the king of the jungle, or you’re equally content being ensconced in endless nature surrounded by creatures great and small, Sanbona has it all.

3. It’s close enough for comfort

Sanbona Tilney Manor

While it’s no secret that our country has more than its fair share of game reserves, the best-known ones are to be found in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. Sanbona, on the other hand, is a mere three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town and matches its far-flung counterparts in terms of authenticity (and luxury). Big Five-spotting, wide-open savannahs, indigenous flora, birdlife and the feeling of being a million miles from civilisation.

4. Conservation comes first

Sanbona Destination Wilderness Experience

As a nonprofit company, all funds generated by tourism are allocated to conservation projects and the expansion of protected areas. The reserve is home to more than 600 types of flora spread over its 58 000 hectares, providing sufficient space and ecological diversity for the survival (and conservation) of the highly elusive riverine rabbit, the 13th most endangered mammal in the world.

5. Spa treatments, stargazing, wilderness walks + more

Sanbona Destination Activities

While the two daily game drives are the main event and, naturally, what most visitors look forward to, Sanbona promises more than game viewing. Birdwatching, stargazing, botanical and guided bush walks, and visits to ancient rock-art sites within the reserve are all part and parcel of your stay.

There’s also a spa, whose Relaxation Retreat menu offers a range of therapies and treatments, including a steam room where guests can unwind after an action-packed day on safari.

With all of this and more, it’s no wonder Sanbona is considered the Cape’s premier wildlife destination.

5-Star Hotel Review

Phenomenally stylish, Sanbona is also a serene introduction to a wildlife, both flora and fauna

5-Star X-Factors

Surrounded by inspiring wilderness

Sanbona - Simply Stunning

Only three hours from Cape Town and it feels like light years from 'urbanity'. Sanbona is a Wildlife Reserve with game. It is not a Game Reserve in the wild, which ignites your adrenalin several rides over. It is, on the beast front, gentle by comparison, though it is as uncultivated, remote, native and as indigenous in feel as any bush adventure you could wish for. What's more, there are no flights, no transfers, just a cruise of a drive, alongside some of the Cape's most humbling scenery.

It is also phenomenally stylish and it is malaria free! It is a serene introduction to a wildlife, both flora and fauna, (including the big five) that is free to thrive and roam feral in a dramatically rugged terrain, where one of the Cape's most threatened bush species, Renosterveld, is protected.

Anna and I packed her 4x4 (a useful car for this adventure but not essential) with little Bibi and plenty of water. We weren't going into a desert, but my childhood memories of the Karoo are all about putting your foot down and getting to the sea. However, this is not the harsh Karoo, it is the Karoo that reminds me of how a craterless moon may look if it benefited from water. Enormous areas of flatland surrounded by mountain ranges that seem to defy earth itself, and an endless sky that turns into your own planetarium by night. You are not instantly struck by the lush shock of beauty that hits you face-on as when you float down into Franchhoek or arrive in Stellenbosch; it is slower to creep up on you though possibly more consuming. Arguably more relaxing.

The Wine Route to get there

We went on the N1 North and met Route 62 at Worcester where we stayed almost in cruise control until the Klein Karoo. Route 62 has a charm and beauty that makes this drive more than enjoyable. We love stopping at farm stalls for a bag of biltong, a woven basket, a drink, wine, whatever really. They are packed with local goodies and, on this route, humour. When you get out of the car you are not just hit by the dry warm air (it can reach serious highs in mid-summer) you are also struck by the stillness of the far-reaching beauty. The enormous palette of blazing azure sky sets a heavenly contrast to the subtle muted tones; greens, purples, greys and browns; of the unruffled distant mountains, many of which rise up behind hectares of verdant vineyards.

All the white- washed stalls are covered in piercingly bright bougainvillea. Take your camera.

The longest wine route in the world, it is tucked between the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges with the Breede River gifting lush life into the valley. It has many notable estates worth visiting: to view, imbibe or both. You pass several little towns and a few large prestigious ones, some of which are perfect examples of picturesque Cape Dutch settlements. On our return we stopped for lunch at a petit-luxe gem in Robertson. Ridiculously good value for somewhere that would definitely be in Tatler's top100 boutique hotels, if they knew about it... we will be reviewing this hotel on our next visit.

The Reserve

So an inspiring drive later and you arrive at the gates to the wildlife reserve of Sanbona. From here it was another 45 minutes before we reached our lodge and I think we were fortunate to have a 4x4 because the road was a little uneven. You can though, leave your car (in safe hands) at the gate and get a transfer in one of the reserve's vehicles.

Sanbona has three lodges. Tilney Manor, an immaculately restored original farmhouse dating back to 1898, nearest to the entrance (it was closed for decorating purposes in November so I didn't see it); Dwyka Tented Lodge, complete with 9 of the most outstanding, authentic, and romantically decorated tents I have seen, back-dropped by a sheer cliff which, at the time, had a nesting black eagle with three fledglings; and Gondwana, the family friendly lodge with 12 suites, where we stayed for two days and nights.

Karoo Classics

The surrounding landscape speaks for itself. It is a long distant view, a 360 degree take on a landscape that really does feel and look unguarded, remote and unfettered by mankind. It's this unencumbered wilderness vibe that paralyses stress (no venom involved). While they have the big five here, including a gloriously healthy pride of white lions, you don't feel threatened on your drives and it is therefore an excellent introduction for the bush-first-timer, for families with young children, or indeed for a lover of nature who is not seeking a daily white knuckle ride.

One is not entirely fearless here because although you can be protected from the potential wrath of the big five, you need to be mindful of venomous snakes. Snake alert is a necessary state to be in most of the time but it is important to remember that bites are extremely rare if you live and let live and if you take the necessary precautions. As it happens, we saw two boomslang and two puff adder, all on the road and spotting these extraordinary animals was as thrilling a sighting as any other.

We arrived to an open-arm welcome and little Bibi was adored from the start. Richard, the general manager, became an instant friend and immediately introduced us to his best friend, sitting almost disguised on the branch of an old scraggly blue eucalyptus tree. A spotted eagle owl named 'Boo' because of the adorable 'boo-boo' hoots he sounds out whenever you call him. He is wild, he just, like the rest of us, loves Gondwana. I am certain he fell for Bibi, as he was a constant companion for us too.

Our suite was upstairs with views to a nearby waterhole, a large dam (the Bellair Dam) and the Aynsberg Mountains. The haphazard vegetation, seemingly uninhabitable to mankind, is extremely good for animal spotting and our suite's terrace felt like a perfect hideout. Our immaculate bedroom, decorated with contemporary haute bush appeal, in a palette of fynbos-green, taupe and cream, had a spacious terrace, complete with super comfortable deck chairs, a bongo drum table, and a funky chocolate brown canvas beanbag lounger. The floor throughout the suite was spotless, polished, beige screed, absolutely desirable when it comes to things that creep and crawl. We saw very little on that front. Also, we suffered not a single mosquito bite, though we are fastidious about protecting ourselves.

Our bathroom was quite seriously award winning, with seamless screed blending into limestone, all milk and honey in tone and comfort while the bespoke potions and lotions were totally dreamy. It too had the far- reaching views from our private terrace, (which is separated from the next by a wall and does feel totally exclusive). Comfort and privacy are paramount at Sanbona.

The Scenic Drives

The rangers are extremely aware of both the human and the animal and as a result the vehicle does not invade the space of the animals. You observe their activities from a healthy distance. We saw plenty of game such as the white lions, hippo, white rhino, different buck, crocodile, ostrich, zebra, lizards, goshawks, but never once did we, or as importantly, the game, feel threatened or disturbed. It's all quite organic here: a peaceful drive through an absorbing landscape.

We enjoyed drinks and biltong while we watched an amber sun drop behind the ragged maroon outline of the distant Aynsberg Mountain range, leaving the sky flushed with exquisite shades of an African sunset; followed by a faster pace back to Bibi who was being spoilt by several members of the loving team back at the lodge.

They offer some serious treatments considering you are out in the wilds of the Karoo. I opted for the most exotic, expensive, extravagant facial involving the plastering on (face only) of crushed pearls and caviar. It was amazing and for that afternoon and night the skin genuinely looked rejuvenated. It then reacted slightly when we got to Paarl the following evening, but once that reaction wore off my skin glowed with a sort of 'pearlessence'!

We ate hearty, healthy food on both the terrace, which looks across to the long slick swimming pool, with the glistening dam and mountains in the distance and, at night, in the dining room with soaring proportions and African inspired elegant interiors. I do remember a delectable ostrich stew and they are exceptionally accommodating to personal requests. We enjoyed warm, friendly, hospitable and kind service throughout our stay. Meals, together with a well-selected list of fine South African wines, are all inclusive.

I really do recommend a few days here. As a couple I would stay at the tented lodge because the thrill factor coupled with the edgy romance of the place is very captivating. However, for little ones or even bigger ones, Gondwana has created a formula that benefits the whole family. Sanbona is, without any doubt, a great Cape Escape.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Expert Review: Cape Town Big 5 Safari 2024

Reader notification

Are you looking for the best malaria-free Big 5 safari park near Cape Town?

Then you’re going to want to read this review. At 620 km², Sanbona is the biggest private reserve I’d been to in all my years of travelling in Africa. I was amazed at the wide-open feel of this free-roaming reserve. I had some incredible wildlife sightings!

🦁 Contact Go2Africa to set up your unforgettable trip from Cape Town to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve!

The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is only a 3-hour drive from Cape Town city centre, but it offers a gentle, real Big 5 experience. It’s one of the largest private reserves in South Africa and is home to rare white lions, and over 3,500-year-old rock art. It’s stunning.

The reserve is one of the few non-profit reserves in Africa and is heavily focused on conservation , which I love. While you’re here you can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, and more great activities.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Review

Where the reserve is located.

Address : R62 Montagu, Western Cape, South Africa

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a beautiful, premier wildlife conservation area . It’s in the same province as Cape Town – Western Cape, in the Little Karoo region near the pretty little town of Montagu.

Montagu is in the Langeberg mountains and is best known for its hot springs, orchards, and vineyards. AND for its proximity to Sabona Wildlife Reserve , just 47 km to the east.

In a nutshell, Sanbona is a unique wilderness experience that blends conservation, adventure, and luxury . All in one spectacular package, just a few hours east of Cape Town.

And due to its location in a part of South Africa that’s away from typical malaria zones, the park is considered malaria-free.

Dwyka Tented Lodge at Sanbona

What to Expect When You Get Here

When I arrived at Sanbona, it was an enormous, sun-drenched golden grassland. The Warmwaterberg Mountains rose up in the background. It’s a spectacular place.

There are 3 different accommodations at Sanbona: the Dwyka Tented Lodge, Gondwana Family Lodge , and Tilney Manor. You can also add on a walking safari at the more rugged Sanbona Explorer Camp.

I chose Dwyka. I love a tent when I’m in Africa, though it’s not usually this luxurious. Each tent has its own heated plunge pool, deck, a large bathtub, and a shower.

Each of the options is very thoughtfully integrated into the landscape , keeping the focus on the natural environment. And every lodge provides a distinct experience.

Choose from family-centred, modern African elegance to secluded settings that highlight the solitude and beauty of the Little Karoo.

Sanbora Wildlife Reserve Activities

Games drives.

Like any activity that revolves around wild animals, you just can’t count on them. I was lucky on some of my game drives at Sanbona and saw most of the Big 5 – elephants, leopards, lions, rhinos, and buffalos. Only one leopard, though those elusive beauties!

There’s no guarantee that you’ll see everything every time , but your chances are good. Sanbona is known for its diverse wildlife populations and extensive conservation efforts.

You won’t see large herds here, but everything is completely wild. The animals aren’t fed, they hunt (or graze or browse…), which makes me happy.

Desert and southwestern black rhinos, as well as cheetahs, have been reintroduced in the area. The reserve also boasts a genetically diverse population of Cape Mountain zebras.

Sanbona is home to the Little 5 , too. These are the leopard tortoise, the elephant shrew, the rhinoceros beetle, the buffalo weaver bird, and the antlion. No guarantee on the Ugly 5 though!

The open safari vehicle is comfortable, and the guides know everything about the area and the animals.

* You should be aware that littles under 4 years old aren’t permitted on game drives, but childcare is available.

A shaggy female kudu in the yellow grassm agains the mountain and blue sky backdrop - Sanbona Wildlife Reserve expert review.

The guided wilderness walks at Sanbona are my favourite activity, like they are everywhere. It’s a fantastic way to get up close to the plants, smaller creatures, and birds in the unique Little Karoo ecosystem.

The focus is on conservation and having a genuine wilderness experience. The guides can also tell you all about the local ecology, conservation efforts, and the history of the reserve.

The bush walks are tailored to the fitness levels and interests of the guests, so they’re accessible to a wide range of ages. But keep in mind that, for safety reasons, kids under the age of 14 years are not permitted on the walks .

The one issue I had was that the bush walk guides were armed. Smart, I know, and common on many bush walks in Africa – there are predators out there. But I always feel like an animal could get shot just because I decided to take a walk.

Of course, this wouldn’t happen unless there was absolutely no choice – it’s just a quirk of mine.

Naturally, the safety of the guests is their number one priority. The guides are awesome, well-trained, and super-knowledgeable. They can not only track and spot wildlife with spooky accuracy but also keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Saddle bill stork in South Africa

More activities

The reserve is home to 3,500-year-old Khoi-Khoi and San rock art , and tours of these creations are available. You can also go bird watching – now, don’t roll your eyes! I never gave birds a second thought, either, until I travelled to South Africa.

The birdlife here is fascinating! Giant birds, colourful birds, tiny birds, ugly and pretty birds. I’m afraid I didn’t have time for a dedicated tour at Sanbona, but if you do, go. And even if you don’t, you’ll see some pretty amazing birds around.

Photography is a no-brainer – there’s so much to take pictures of! And please, don’t forget to look up at night. The star gazing is unreal. If you’ve never seen the Milky Way, well, hang onto your hat!

The Relaxation Retreat (aka. The Spa)

This is one of the best massages I’ve ever had. You can also choose a foot massage, a facial, or a full body scrub. I even heard stories of a sauna and steam room at the other lodges on-site. Just blissful.

Each of the accommodation options has its own dining room, and the food is good and plentiful. The wonderful staff is more than willing to accommodate preferences and health restrictions.

Dwyka is home to a very lovely wine cellar.

Kids enjoying the Eco-explorer group, checking an some old bones in the garden sunshine

Children’s Activities

Not having kids myself, I can only tell you what I learned about what you can do with yours at the reserve.

First, Sanbona does offer child care if you’d like to go on a game drive and you have kids too young to come along (<5 yrs).

And if you’re staying at the Gondwana Family Lodge, they also have a program called Eco-Explorers. Your 4-and-unders can go on short trail walks through the lodge gardens, do arts and crafts, and have fun while the grown-ups explore.

cheetahs at Sanbona Reserve

The History of Sanbona

The history of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pretty inspiring story. Of transformation, conservation, and dedication to preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.

Initially, the land that’s now Sanbona was used for agricultural purposes – crops and livestock. The idea for a private nature reserve, originally named the Cape Wildlife Reserve, began in 1998.

The area was expanded, and Sanbona’s rewilding efforts began. The intent was to create a self-sustaining ecosystem similar to what the area might have looked like 300 years ago.

This included the reintroduction of the Big Five and other species significant to the area’s biodiversity. Over the years Sanbona has become a haven for wildlife.

You can see things like the critically endangered riverine rabbit, desert and southwestern black rhinos after nearly 200 years of local extinction, and cheetahs.

It’s actually the first protected area in the Western Cape to reintroduce cheetahs into the wild.

I know I tend to go on about this, but the reserve’s focus on conservation is admirable. By 2020, their commitment to conservation was further solidified.

This was when it was rezoned from agricultural to conservation use and registered as a non-profit company. This ensured that it could continue to serve as a biodiversity centre for future generations. How great is that?!

Pros & Cons of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

All in all, here are my impressions of Sanbona.

  • Sanbona is the most beautiful reserve so close to Cape Town, with the best wildlife experiences
  • there are great options, even a lodge geared toward families, all fairly small.
  • the reserve respects its animals, and conservation is a priority
  • it is wheelchair/disabled accessible
  • malaria-free
  • there are no budget options here
  • due to its size and history, there are no large herds of animals at Sanbona
  • that’s it!

Getting to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve from Cape Town

There are a couple of options when it comes to getting to the reserve.

1. I recommend my go-to for all things safari – Go2Africa , just because they know everything about everything. They will work with you to make sure you’re getting just what you want.

Go2Africa will arrange everything from your stay at the reserve to your transportation from Cape Town. It just doesn’t get easier. Go to their website to arrange your trip to Sanbona.

2. You can also rent a car and drive there yourself. It’s actually a great opportunity to explore South Africa’s Wine Route – the world’s longest wine route, Route 62.

It’ll take you through beautiful landscapes, pretty towns, and vineyards, of course. If you love a road trip, then this might be your best way to go. You can visit wine estates, taste the local cuisine, and discover small towns along the way.

I would definitely recommend allowing yourself some extra travel time to fully enjoy what Route 62 has to offer. There are farm stalls, antique shops, wine cellars, and not to mention quaint roadside restaurants to stop at.

I like to rent through Discovery Cars when I travel. They’ll show you local rental places as well as big companies, so you get the best choices and can support local.

More to Do Around Sanbona

While you’re in the beautiful area, I hope you have some time to do a bit of exploring. There are some things to do outside of the reserve that are worth your time.

  • Wellington, for instance, is known for its berry farm. Take a guided tour if you like, or pick your own strawberries, youngberries, raspberries, or Cape gooseberries.
  • The R60 past Worcester lets you see the colourful Nuy Valley, a hidden gem for wine lovers.
  • In the town of Robertson, you can enjoy a wine safari experience or a coffee break at Strictly Coffee.
  • Ashton is another good spot, home to Platform 62. Here you can taste and buy a wide range of local wines and spirits.
  • If you’re interested in a detour, La Montanara has a unique cheese and wine pairing experience.
  • Montagu has some historic charm and an art district. There are activities like vintage car tours and cycling, and ample opportunities for nature walks and hiking. The Cogmanskloof Hiking Trail in Montagu is a popular choice, with gorgeous views and a chance to explore the local flora and fauna.
  • If you go as far as Barrydale, Diesel & Crème has legendary milkshakes. It’s also got some unique cafes, artisanal shops, and art galleries to wander through.

Summing It Up: Sanbona Wilderness Reserve Expert Review

If you’re hoping to find an incredible wildlife experience close to Cape Town – you’ve got it! Sanbona Wildlife Reserve will give you that genuine feeling of spotting wildlife in the bush.

You can even sit outside and listen to them at night. Nothing will make you want to stay up all night than being afraid you’ll miss hearing something in the dark. Hippos sound beautiful when the sun goes down. Or is that just me who thinks so?

home-white-lion-tribute

Tribute to an iconic duo

The story of the renowned white lions of Sanbona has come full circle. All chapters have been finished, and this book is now sadly closed. In 2011 two wild white lion cubs were born to the then mixed pride of Sanbona. Through the years, they grew up and learned to survive in this harsh Little Karoo environment.

The lion and lioness (31 and 30) soon became an iconic duo on the reserve with their white coats and icy blue eyes. The male lion’s contributed to the lion metapopulation when one of the tawny females in the pride gave birth to two male cubs in 2015, who were then translocated to as reserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Over the years the lions have been observed hunting various species from aardvark to giraffe, they were resilient lions who persisted through the drought and against many odds. Now, after 12 years they have lain down their heads on the Sanbona ground for the last time.

Old age, injuries from large prey encounters and finally the severe storm conditions that descended over Sanbona earlier this week has claimed both their lives within 5 days of one another. They will be remembered by many across the world for their beauty, their chilling blue stare, and their contribution to the Sanbona Lion Project.

They have paved the way to a new lion chapter on Sanbona.

Climate and Weather

The climate is semi-arid with rainfall mainly in the winter month. The Klein Karoo is traditionally hot and dry, with cooling south-westerly winds during the afternoons in summer, making it ideal conditions for a lovely sunset game drive. On average the nights cool down to 15C – 20C degrees in summer.

Very little rain occurs during summer, and if it does, it is usually in form of thunderstorms. Normally the area receives about 250mm-350mm of rain per year, mostly in the winter months.

The lowest rainfall (6mm) is in January and the highest (27mm) in August. The coolest months are July & August, when the mercury drops to -2 & -4 degrees Celsius on average during the night, but during the day the temperatures range between comfortable 15-20 degrees, ideal safari conditions.

What to bring

For your safari dress completely informal, natural colors are recommended. A warm jacket, a fleece, scarf, beanie, gloves for early morning and night drives

Comfortable walking shoes Swimming costume Binoculars, camera Hat, sunglasses Suntan lotion

Please note that the White Lion Lodge is situated within a malaria free area. If there is anything else you would like to know, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Game Reserves Near Cape Town

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

sanbona safari cape town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.
