The saying that everything is bigger in Texas likely originated as a reference to the enormity of the state's geographical area, but it could easily apply to the lavish and over-the-top festive decorations during the holiday season.

We offer two different holiday sightseeing adventures:

- Highland Park Lights: One of the most extravagant Christmas light displays in the country is located in the Highland Park neighborhood. It has become a tradition for thousands of locals and visitors to flock to this area every year during the holidays to see the town sparkle. From the iconic Highland Park Village to Beverly Drive mansions' festive decorations, the Highland Park Christmas Light is a unique experience.

- Vitruvian Lights: During the holidays, Addison's Vitruvian Park transforms into one of North Texas' most spectacular holiday destinations during Vitruvian Lights, an annual celebration in which 1.5 million sparkling LED lights are wrapped around more than 550 trees to create a blazing wonderland.

Whether you're planning a corporate holiday celebration, a night out with a group of friends, or a family gathering, this unique holiday experience is sure to spread holiday cheer ... hop on the warm bus and drive down Beverly's holiday displays, tour the Highland Park Village and visit the town's dazzling "Big Pecan Tree" on Armstrong Parkway. Join us for a jolly celebration of the best time of the year!

9 Best Holiday Light Displays in Dallas-Fort Worth

dallas tx christmas lights tour

Everything's bigger and brighter in Texas when it comes to Christmas lights . Dallas-Fort Worth has several beautiful holiday displays, so grab a peppermint latte or some hot cocoa for the kids, load up the SUV, and enjoy the holiday events and lighting displays. Some displays offer refreshments, rides, and visits with Santa, while others go all out, even offering carriage rides.

Addison: Vitruvian Park Lights

Vitruvian Lights

Walk and wind through the 19-acre Vitruvian Park in Addison , where millions of sparkling LED lights are wrapped around more than 500 glittering trees to create this magical holiday wonderland. The lights are turned on November 25, 2022, and can be enjoyed all the way through January 1, 2023, every night from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Entrance to the park as well as parking are both free.

In addition to the lights, there are usually musical performances, gourmet food trucks, sweet treats, free photos with Santa, classic holiday characters, and an elf balloon artist.

Arlington: Interlochen Lights Display

One of the largest holiday light displays in North Texas comes to life when more than 200 Arlington neighbors dress up their homes and lawns with Christmas lights and an assortment of holiday-themed displays for the Interlochen Lights Display .

For the 2022 holiday season, you can drive through the illuminated neighborhood at no cost beginning December 16 until Christmas Day, from 6–11 p.m. each night. There is a route that all drivers must follow, with the only entrance at the intersection of West Randol Mill Road and Westwood Drive.

Arlington: Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Over Texas

Holiday in the Park celebrates the most wonderful time of the year at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. The park sparkles with more than a million twinkling lights and hosts a variety of holiday shows. Enjoy toasty campfires, delicious hot cocoa, a huge tree, Santa Land, and Santa Claus. The celebration usually runs from Nov. 25, 2022, until Jan. 1, 2023, on select nights. Your general admission into the park includes access to all of the holiday activities.

Dallas: Highland Park

 adrian valenzuela/Flickr

It's obvious that many of the residents in Highland Park hire professionals to do their decorating, and that makes it one of the best neighborhoods for viewing elaborate holiday lights in Dallas. The lights are available from late November through the holidays, and while you can drive through them in your own vehicle, you can make the journey extra festive by booking a carriage ride. Brazos Carriages and White Haven Carriages both offer horse-drawn sleigh rides through the neighborhood for a truly memorable experience.

Frisco: Christmas in the Square

Frisco Square

Christmas in the Square is a light show featuring more than 180,000 lights choreographed to holiday music. Visitors can drive, stroll, or ride in a horse-drawn carriage past the shops, restaurants, and amazing holiday displays around the square.

The same snow machines used by Disney create a winter wonderland on the sidewalks of Frisco Square. There are "snow flurries" every 15 minutes on Fridays and Saturdays throughout Christmas in the Square—even if it's 75 degrees outside. The Christmas in the Square Light Show is open nightly during the festival, which runs from Nov. 19, 2022, until Jan. 3, 2023.

Fort Worth: Sundance Square Parade of Lights

Held each year in downtown Fort Worth, the Sundance Square Parade of Lights features more than 100 illuminated entries, cowboy Santas, marching bands, and antique cars. Street seats are available for a fee, but there are also plenty of free viewing areas available.

The parade is usually held just before Thanksgiving, on November 20, 2022. It starts at the intersection of Throckmorton and Weatherford Streets, proceeds south along Commerce Street, and ends on Third Street.

Fort Worth: Gift of Lights

Texas Motor Speedway

Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway is a two-mile-long track featuring more than three million lights. Tickets start at $30 per carload and are available at the entrance or online. You only need one ticket per car, and your ticket is good for enjoying the display at any time you like. The website has a pre-made holiday music playlist so you can put on some seasonal tunes while driving through the lights for a full Christmas experience.

Grand Prairie: Prairie Lights

Prarie Lights

Prairie Lights is a two-mile stretch of decorations and festive fun featuring more than four million lights, hundreds of displays, a Holiday Magic light show, walk-through lighted displays, pictures with Santa, seasonal food, and family fun.

Prairie Lights runs from Thanksgiving until New Year's Eve, and the cost starts at $50 per vehicle. To avoid long lines, check the park status before leaving, visit between Christmas and New Year's Eve, or consider purchasing a Fast Pass to guarantee entry and skip the line.

Plano: Deerfield

Take a drive through the festively illuminated Deerfield neighborhood. You can also make a reservation for a carriage ride , which begins in the Legacy Church parking lot at Legacy and Preston Meadow. Deerfield is located in Northwest Plano between Preston and Coit roads. There are several ways to enter the neighborhood, but the roads that enter from Legacy Avenue tend to have the longest lines.

The lights are on every night from December 1–30, 2022, from sunset to 10 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on weekends.

Dallas Holiday Light Displays

Bring out the family to enjoy some of Dallas' best holiday displays.

Nothing brings up feelings of nostalgia more than holiday lights. Growing up, my family piled into our forest green Suburban to gaze out the window almost every weekend in December – we couldn't get enough. My mom, our ringleader, was so eager to get in the spirit that our own tree usually went up early, on Halloween. I have fond memories of our time in the car looking at lights and it's a tradition I've kept up with my own family today. Here are a few of our favorite places in Dallas to take in the sparkle of the season.

Noteworthy Neighborhoods

From those family drives as a child to now, neighborhood lights remain my favorite. Even as residential displays become more elaborate, there's something to the charm of simple string lights hung with care (and perhaps a little frustration) by the homeowner.

Highland Park

One of the city's tiniest neighborhoods , Highland Park has everything from mansions decked out in professional exhibits to gingerbread-like houses you'll want to take a bite out of. Start at Armstrong Parkway and Preston Road and wind your way through a transfixing tour of lights. My son's favorite house has half a dozen giant jack-in-the-boxes with bobbing heads modeled after, what else, the homeowner's family members! Be sure to drive through Highland Park Village , a shopping center with trees wrapped trunk to tip.

Swiss Avenue

While my mother is putting up the tree on Halloween , East Dallas' Swiss Avenue is positively packed with little goblins parading up and down the street begging candy off the festive homeowners. It's so popular that Adele even went trick or treating there in 2016 disguised as Jim Carrey's character in "The Mask." For the winter holidays, Swiss Avenue offers a taste of true turn-of-the-century elegance a la "It's A Wonderful Life."

Kessler Park

South of Downtown lies the charming Kessler Park neighborhood in Oak Cliff. The lights are arranged annually by a group of volunteers; find five large, lit trees at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Lausanne Avenue and you know you're in the right spot. The Kessler Park neighborhood lights are even more beautiful backlit by the shimmering Dallas skyline.

Tall, Tall Trees

Galleria dallas.

Every good tour of lights includes a towering tree or two. At least once a year we'll hop out of the car for a look at the tree at the Galleria Dallas . At 95 feet, it has the distinction of being the world's tallest indoor Christmas tree. It's majestic from any angle, but even more so viewed while skating around on the mall's signature ice rink.

Klyde Warren Park

Downtown's Klyde Warren Park makes a statement with a brilliant tree adorned in multicolored lights and topped with a massive starburst. Oversized trees need oversized décor, and a few blocks south of the park the Omni Dallas Hotel features a display of several lacquered red ball ornaments. At 10 feet in diameter and 1,200 pounds apiece, they're placed on the hotel's lawn every year by a crane.

City Hall Plaza

Join the City of Dallas for the annual "Deck the Plaza City Hall Lights" event on December 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a full program with live entertainment on stage includes Dallas ISD’s Booker T Washington School for Performing and Visual Arts “Jazz Combo”, Molina High School Marching Band and live contemporary music band; Flame Foundation (flamenco dance); Navillera (Korean Dance); Grand Prairie Mariachi Azul; Devotio Moderna will play and sing Spanish language traditional holiday music and the Dallas Police Department choirs.

Families are invited to come and enjoy free fun activities including meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus, carriage rides, mini train rides, bounce houses, a City staff holiday tree decoration and exhibit, and much more! At 6:45 p.m. we flip the switch to lite the 50-foot-tall holiday tree for families to enjoy and take pictures.

Walk-Through Winter Wonderlands

Holiday at the arboretum.

In addition to thousands of twinkling lights in the trees, Holiday at the Arboretum presents the magnificent The 12 Days of Christmas outdoor exhibit. Twelve 25-foot Victorian-style gazebos depict scenes from the traditional carol, from Twelve Drummers Drumming to a Partridge in a Pear Tree. I guarantee you've never seen anything like it. You can't miss the 50-foot musical Christmas tree with more than 40,000 lights and the Christmas Village that features holiday performances by local musicians and artists. Other seasonal programming includes Santa visits and special treats. Reserve your tickets now for this prized Dallas tradition.

SNOWDAY Winter Pop-Up

A social media influencer's paradise, SNOWDAY's Wondrous Adventure at Galleria Dallas takes travelers through 11 holiday-themed rooms made to be unique photo backdrops. While not a traditional Christmas light display, you never know what you'll find around each corner at SNOWDAY.

Dallas Zoo Lights

Neighborhood lights will always have my heart, but my son loves the magic of massive, immersive lighting displays. After the animals head in for the evening, the Dallas Zoo transforms into a winter wonderland with over one million twinkling lights called Dallas Zoo Lights . Walk through realistic silk-covered lanterns in the shape of your favorite animals and enjoy a mesmerizing light show featuring over a million twinkling lights that adorn most of the zoo.

Drive Thru Experiences

Dallas bites & sights tours.

Gather some friends for one of Dallas by Chocolate's Christmas Lights tours through the Park Cities and Downtown Dallas this season. There are all ages and adult-only versions of the tour, during which you'll ride in a heated motorcoach and sample decadent desserts while gallivanting around town. Take in the holiday sights and tastes on the signature chocolate tour or a themed event, such as the "Tacos, Margaritas & Christmas Lights" tour.

Helicopter Christmas Light Tour

If you're looking for a more exhilarating experience, there is no better way to celebrate the holiday season in DFW than coming aboard their Turbine Polar Express! Explore miles of wonderful lights, decorations, massive Christmas trees, and exciting sights to behold from Santa’s very own altitude. Grab a friend and take flight now!

Some 85,000 Christmas lights - spanning trees and figures like elves and gingerbread people - are synched to music that visitors can hear on 89.9FM in their cars. The show runs nightly, 6-11 pm. Find the house at 1000 Clinton Dr., Plano.

Curry Christmas Chaos , North Richland Hills Three houses annually collaborate to present a light show synchronized to music that's anything but "chaos." From start to finish, it's typically over an hour long, and features a mix of pixels and standard LED lights "dancing" to music. Visitors can tune in to 89.9 FM to listen as lots of Christmas trees light up on the lawn. The show runs every night (unless Mother Nature decides differently), 6-11 pm. Find it at 3506 Reeves St., NRH. Follow the Facebook page for more information and updates.

Tell Family Lights , far north Fort Worth, through December 31 The family in this home near Keller Central High School also operates the popular Sugar Lane Lights in Haslet, now it its second year . But their own residential display is still going strong, bigger and better than ever this year, they say. Find the home at 5016 Keating St., Fort Worth, 76244. The choreographed light show is on 6-10 pm daily. From their car, visitors can scan a QR code or visit the website to vote on songs to play. (Make sure to not block anyone’s driveway and be careful driving down the street, they advise.) Follow their website or Facebook page for more information and updates.

Black Family Lights, Keller , through December 31 A computer-controlled Christmas light show syncs to music. The family uses about 45,000 channels of control to make over 1 million possible colors, coordinated to music on 89.5 FM. This year they're turning the animated show into a fundraiser for Love Without Boundaries . Showtimes are 6-10 pm nightly. Find it in the Heritage subdivision, at 8944 Manana St. Keller, 76244 .

Laazy H Ranch, Sanger, through January 2 A family ranch has transformed into a mind-boggling, two-acre, drive-by lights display that gets bigger and brighter every year. The lights are on from dusk to 11 pm nightly. It's free to visit. Find it at 9719 Bernard Rd., Sanger.

Santa House, University Park Once hailed "the single best Christmas light display in Dallas," this perennial favorite fills the front lawn with hundreds of lighted blow-mold decorations that homeowner Wayne Smith has amassed over the years. But look up — way up to the roof — and you'll find his distinctly "Dallas" touch: the head of the State Fair's very first Big Tex, restored to his original form as St. Nick in 1949 and donning a Santa hat. Find it nightly at 3629 Southwestern Blvd., Dallas.

The Park Cities The grand homes in the Park Cities neighborhoods of Dallas shine with beautiful light displays, many of which are professionally installed; pick just about any street where you see houses lit top to bottom in twinkling lights, and there are bound to be a dozen more. Be sure to check out Highland Park Village and its 1.5 million lights while you're in the area, and don't pass by SMU without driving down the campus' main drag, Bishop Boulevard, toward the fountain and back.

Kessler Park Historic Kessler Park goes all out, with lots of holiday lights on homes and trees against a backdrop of the Dallas skyline. The holiday decorations are coordinated on various traffic islands in the neighborhood each year. From downtown Dallas, go west on Interstate 30. Take the Sylvan exit, turn south on Sylvan, drive about a half a mile, and turn west on Colorado. You can't miss some of the most majestic oak trees in Dallas, shining bright for the holidays.

Elderoaks Lights, Oak Cliff A Dallas tradition over 30 years strong, Elderoaks sees 96 percent of the homes in the neighborhood participate in a dazzling display. Located along three streets just south of the old Oak Cliff Country Club (Elderoaks Lane, Elderleaf Drive, and Elderoaks Place), the neighborhood scenes celebrate Christmas with homemade decorations that span medieval times to present day. Don't miss the streaming show of Christmas carols. There's no fee to watch, and lights go on at dusk each night.

Ryan Place , Fort Worth The gorgeous historic homes in this grand Fort Worth neighborhood get illuminated in spectacular fashion, as do the long walks that lead up to them. The beloved annual Candlelight Christmas in Ryan Place home tour takes place December 2-3, but these stately homes will stay illuminated through the holidays.

Historic Fairmount , Fort Worth You can pick any night to drive around Fairmount and see historic bungalows lit festively for the season. But the best night of all is Festivus , the annual celebration and holiday lights tour. It takes place 6-9 pm Saturday, December 9. Maps of participating homes will be handed out on arrival. Donations of $10 or a toy for One Safe Place are being requested. Watch the historic district's Facebook page for more information as plans develop.

Keller Keller Parks & Recreation has designed a driving or walking tour of its holiday yard decoration winners. The addresses are listed on their Facebook page , and a handy map of the route is here .

A guide for seeing Christmas lights in Dallas

And stop at a few local eateries for snacks and treats along the way..

This panoramic view shows the full holiday scene of Wayne Smith's house and yard.

By Mary Grace Granados and Sarah Blaskovich

9:00 AM on Dec 5, 2020 CST

Make an event of looking at Christmas lights this year, even if you’re going to stay in your car most of the time. We’ve scouted out streets and houses in three Dallas neighborhoods, Lakewood, Swiss Avenue and Highland Park, to help you find the ones with the most displays or the most spectacular ones.

Along the way, grab dinner, bites to eat or desserts from local spots to add to the layer of fun (or just to satisfy your sweet tooth).

It’s probably a no-brainer, but we recommend listening to Christmas tunes along the way, too.

Here’s a list of a few streets that have an abundance of decorated houses.

Lakewood and Swiss Avenue

Before you do any Christmas-light looking in East Dallas, stop for some sustenance. A good dinner spot is Flatbread Company, a pizza joint at the bottom of Lowest Greenville. It’s just a few minutes from your first twinkly lights on Swiss Avenue. Flatbread Company has a huge patio that makes it easy to socially distance from people outside of your household. It’s also a family-friendly spot, where the servers will toss your kid a ball of dough to play with while you wait for your pies.

Take Greenville Avenue, which turns into Munger Boulevard, until you reach Swiss Avenue. Take right on Swiss and go up the street, through the intersection at Collett Ave where you’ll see a house with large lit-up trees. When you reach the end of the street, turn around the median and drive down the other side of Swiss Avenue.

Make your way back down Swiss Avenue toward La Vista Drive. You’ll be able to see the lights on both sides of the streets, and a nativity scene closer to the end of the road.

Next, for your tour through Lakewood, your best bets for lights are Lakewood Boulevard, Lakeshore Drive, Westlake Drive and Meadow Lake Avenue at the heart of the neighborhood. Head north up Abrams Road and take a right on Lakewood Boulevard, your route is up to you, but be sure to take a look at the massive Christmas trees and presents near 6726 Lakewood Boulevard.

Westlake Drive has an abundance of lit-up homes, and on Meadow Lake Avenue you’ll spot some fun decorations like Santa and Buddy the Elf.

If you’re a fan of Clark Griswold, make sure to drive down Lakeshore Drive — the house is close to the intersection at Lakewood Boulevard.

To finish out your East Dallas tour, stop at Lakewood Growler to take some craft beers home, or go across the street to Hillside Tavern for a snack and a cocktail. Or, if you need a jolt of caffeine, drive through the White Rock Coffee at the northeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams roads. Note that it closes at 7 p.m.

Highland Park

Here’s the thing about Christmas lights in Highland Park: You really can’t go wrong turning down any of the streets. The streets that bear the names of universities — Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth — are all worth a look. On the other side of Preston Road, you’ll find great decorations on Arcady Avenue, Lorraine Avenue, Belclaire Avenue and so on all the way up to Highland Park Village.

You could spend hours driving around, but here are our suggestions: start with Highland Park Village’s iconic lit-up trees. If you can find a parking spot, take the kids into Bird Bakery for treats. The drive will be more fun if the kids have cupcakes!

The adults should stop into Merit Coffee Co. for lattes to-go.

Make your way down Beverly Drive for some of the best lights, and weave through the adjacent university streets, like Princeton and Harvard Avenues. Be sure to take a trip up Armstrong Parkway, and follow your fancy down any of the intersecting streets. They’re full of lights, you can’t go wrong.

For one last stop at the end of your drive, head north on Preston Road past Mockingbird and Lovers Lanes. At the 3600 block of Southwestern Boulevard, you’ll find one famous house that has more than 300 light-up Santas on display. You’ll know when it’s coming up, because traffic will slow to a crawl as passersby stop to get photos of the spectacle.

If your crew is hungry after all that driving, take Southwestern east of 75 and go south on Greenville Avenue. New barbecue joint Oak’d is serving some serious Central Texas ‘cue, with an impressive offering of house-made desserts to finish.
