4 things to expect from K-pop boyband Ateez in Saudi Arabia

Kohinoor Sahota - Deputy Editor

The eight-piece group are bringing their world tour to the Kingdom .

Saudi Arabia loves K-pop. Not only has it welcomed big stars, from BTS to BLACKPINK, but it even launched a KCon festival. Now, the South Korean supergroup Ateez are coming to the Kingdom.  The Fellowship: Break the Wall Tour  takes place on 20 July at Jeddah Superdome.

Ateez consists of eight members: Hongjoong, Jongh, Mingi, San, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang and Wooyoung. The group entered the music scene in 2018, and are famous for their big ballads and EDM sound. They are no strangers to Saudi Arabia, as they performed at KCon festival twice. So, if you want to catch the K-poppers, here’s what to expect from Ateez in Jeddah.

Hardcore Atinys fans

Every artist or group with a dedicated following should have a nickname. Lady Gaga’s fans are called Little Monsters, Rihanna’s are called the Navy, and Ateez’s are the Atinys. Note: it is pronounced a-teenies. If you want to join the crew, channel your inner emo. The fans are often seen in gothic outfits, which are inspired by the group. Enthusiasm is essential, eyeliner is optional.

A staggering set list with 22 songs

If Ateez’s performance at the O2 Arena, London in 2023, is anything to by, fans can expect an epic song list. We’re talking hit after hit performed in full – 22, to be precise. The hard-working group know how to put on a show, and sing and dance their way with a gusto through the songs.

A guest appearance from Maddox

Who doesn’t love a guest appearance at a concert? We’ve seen performers support their beaus, from Gwen Stefani popping up at a Blake Shelton concert, and Jay-Z dropping rhymes at a Beyoncé concert. Ateez have previously welcomed their long-time collaborator Maddox onto the stage. Born in Wales, he grew up in Bournemouth. He is a fellow KQ Entertainment star is a solo singer, but he has written and composed songs for Ateez.

… and an encore with  Eternal Sunshine

The show must go on. And on. So, judging from previous Ateez concerts, we are expecting an encore with  Eternal Sunshine . The upbeat song has been used as an encore for  The Fellowship: Beginning of the End  concerts, and is a tribute to their fans (aka Atiny).

Tickets are on sale on 12 June from 6pm.

Expanding the Map: K-Pop World Tours being too selective in which countries to visit

ateez world tour jeddah

When groups announce world tours, fans experience a mix of exhilaration and anxiety—thrilled at the prospect of seeing their favorite artists live, yet anxious about whether their city will be included in the tour stops.

With a growing number of K-Pop artists announcing tours, the pattern of tour stops frequently leads to fan disappointment. In North America, major cities like Los Angeles and New York are almost always included, while in Asia, Japan frequently makes the list. This predictable selection sparks a critical question: Can these tours truly be labeled as "world" tours if they consistently overlook a vast majority of cities and limit themselves to a select few? The excitement of a global tour diminishes when it appears only a handful of favored locations are chosen, leaving countless fans around the world hoping for a broader reach.

ateez world tour jeddah

K-Pop groups seldom tour Europe, appearing more frequently for Fashion Week or brand events. In North America, Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver are inconsistently included in tour schedules.

Even within the United States, the distribution of K-Pop events is heavily skewed toward a few major cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, and Chicago. This focus neglects numerous other metropolitan areas like the Bay Area/San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, Boston, and Phoenix, all of which have substantial K-Pop fanbases eagerly awaiting their chance to participate in these cultural celebrations. While fans in cities like Los Angeles and New York enjoy frequent tour stops, those in less favored cities feel a growing sense of neglect. This uneven distribution not only frustrates devoted fans but also represents a missed opportunity for artists to expand their reach and connect with enthusiastic audiences across the entire country.

ateez world tour jeddah

Similarly, although states like Texas and Georgia frequently host K-Pop shows, visits to other southern states like Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina are rare.

ateez world tour jeddah

Moreover, the geographical coverage of K-Pop tours reveals significant gaps, with entire continents like South America, Africa, and regions such as India frequently overlooked. Even Australia, despite its vibrant fan community, finds itself included only sporadically. This selective approach to tour locations not only disappoints fans in these areas but also limits the global impact and cultural exchange that K-Pop could foster. Expanding tours to include these underrepresented regions could not only satisfy a broader fan base but also enrich the global K-Pop community by embracing diverse cultural interactions.

While some argue that adding more tour stops could overextend the idols, and entertainment companies prioritize profitable markets, the reality of K-Pop's global popularity suggests a need for more expansive tour planning. Despite groundbreaking tours by groups like BTS and TWICE, many other groups have yet to embrace such extensive global outreach.

Ultimately, fans across the globe would be profoundly gratified by a world tour that genuinely encompasses a wide array of cities and countries, rather than concentrating on a select few urban centers. Such expansive tours would not only fulfill the hopes of countless fans eager to experience live performances but also truly honor the "world" in world tour, demonstrating a commitment to reaching diverse audiences wherever they may be.

Companies are going to book shows where they can get a large audience and make the most money. That's why it's always going to be major cities. They wouldn't make enough money by visiting some small city that's difficult to travel to (no major airport leading to multiple connecting flights or long drives) and may not even have the proper venue for a concert.

8 more replies

Its no worse than Americans using the word "world" in their "world series" baseball matches 🤣 Does the author want these idols to kill themselves through pure exhaustion, trying to reach as many places as possible. They become worn out, performing in the amount of cities they do already. I'm from Western Australia, whilst some groups come to Australia, we accept that if we want to see them, in most cases, we will have to travel to the other side of the country to do so. For the complaint about them not visiting smaller US states/cities, get over it, save up and get off your fat asses and travel like the rest of us have to do. Also Australia is a bloody long way away from most places, we are extremely grateful for any acts that make the long, arduous journey to get here but understand that there are a huge amount of logistics and expenses involved for any artist coming here and its not always possible. There are many countries whose governments are not accepting of Kpop acts, so are unlikely to give permission for them to tour, no matter the number of fans requesting them to do so. Kpop groups and their crews are made up of human beings, there is a limit to what they can be expected to do. Another factor is expense, some companies just cannot afford to send their groups on far reaching tours. This article is so ignorant and stupid.

At the 34th Golden Disc Awards, the group won the Next Generation Award. At the 2020 MAMA Awards, ATEEZ received the special award for Discovery of the Year. At the 10th Gaon Music Awards, they were awarded as the World K-pop Rookie. At the 2021 and 2022 Seoul Music Awards, ATEEZ received the bongsang, or main award.

ATEEZ music is popular around the world

Since debut, the group has released one Korean studio album, nine Korean EPs and many singles.

Their debut EP peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard World Albums chart. ATEEZ's first entry on the Billboard 200 was EP "ZERO : FEVER Part.3", which peaked at No. 42 . " THE WORLD EP.1 : MOVEMENT " reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

" ZERO : FEVER Part.1 " became the group's first to be certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association. " ZERO : FEVER Part.2 " and " ZERO: FEVER Part.3 " were both certified double platinum.

How many members are in ATEEZ?

There are eight members:

  • Jongho (Full name: Choi Jong-ho) Born Oct. 12, 2000. Hometown: Seoul.

ATEEZ's ninth mini album 'THE WORLD EP.2 : OUTLAW' released June 16

In their performances, ATEEZ seeks to bring high energy with a flair of cool.

"We really prepared this comeback for a long time," said Hongjoong, the group's leader. "We're so excited to see our fans' reaction and all the audience’s reaction."

"If for 'HALAZIA' we were deep diving into a specific sort of concept, this time for the new mini album what's happening is that there's a variety of different genres," said Jongho.

The six-track mini album encapsulates the varied nature of ATEEZ's music, underscoring their knack for versatility and adaptability.

"With the title track 'BOUNCY', it's a lot of fun vibes and energetic colors," said Jongho. "For the other tracks, (we) can take on different concepts. This mini album, itself, is a variety. Musically, it is very diverse."

On "THE WORLD EP.2 : OUTLAW," this ranges from the operatic, haunting tones of " This World " to the hypnotic tempo of " Outlaw ."

San shared he is particularly eager to showcase track " DJANGO " for the fans, who ATEEZ loving call "ATINY." "I love 'DJANGO' because it's really my style," he said. "So I want to show my ATINY this stage."

With this mini album, ATEEZ hopes the audience can gain "happy energy," said Mingi.

ATEEZ brings the heat with 'BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS)'

The album's lead single packs a spicy punch through its vibrant bass sound and lyrics.

"The song name is 'BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS)', and there is a Korean pepper called 'cheongyang gochu,'" explained Yunho. "It's very spicy and very known in Korea. It’s in par with the name of the song and the lyrics as well."

ATEEZ took inspiration from its spiciness, incorporating gestures into the choreography, such as flaking the pepper, grinding it and biting it.

The track's music video showcases ATEEZ's signature artistry with filmic sets, thrilling action and kinetic choreography.

"This music video relates with our other music videos," shared Hongjoong, referencing the group's storyline represented throughout their releases. Aspects of ATEEZ's music videos allude to one another, creating a larger cinematic plot. This includes the white stage featured in "BOUNCY".

"It's a very symbolic part of the enigmatic storyline that (we) have that will help develop the storyline even further," said Hongjoong.

What do ATEEZ call their fans?

The fandom name for ATEEZ is "ATINY." This comes from a combination of "ATEEZ" and "destiny," meaning that the fans and the group are destined to meet.

What does ATEEZ stand for?

ATEEZ is short for "A TEEnager Z."

ATEEZ has become 'like a family' through the years

ATEEZ debuted as teenagers with members ranging from 18 to 20 years at the time. Now, almost five years later, the members have grown and evolved in many ways, as individuals and as a group.

Jongho said his vocals have developed. San pointed to the physical changes he experienced since debuting at 19 to now being 23 (soon 24 in less than a month).

Yunho shared his expressions and stage presence have evolved. And with this growth, there is always a sense of "not forgetting where I came from in the first place," he said.

This humble mentality resonates throughout ATEEZ as each member deeply values one another and ATINY.

"As time goes by, the ATINYs we had when we started and the ATINYs we have now, we're getting more fans around us that support us and love us unconditionally," said Wooyoung. "With this comes a lot of responsibility, and with this responsibility, we are trying to make the best performances."

"As an artist, it's really important not just for the artist themself to enjoy the stage but for them to enjoy it together with the audience," said Mingi. "We’ve learned a lot in terms of working together in order to perform it with them and have fun with them. It's not just something we're doing now and that we've learned up to this point. We will continue to get better as we learn what we can advance on."

All of this has culminated in an enduring tie between the members.

"There's a lot of things that go into this stage progress," said Yeosang. "With (our) teamwork, now (we're) able to understand each other without even words. If (we) look into each others' eyes, (we're) able to fully understand the situation going on."

For Seonghwa, ATEEZ has become "more like a family" over the years they've spent together.

"I better understand myself; as a person understanding and developing, and as an artist as well," he said. "That comes with being with ATINY together. This progress hasn't just been alone."

During this time, everything had become bigger and deeper, said Hongjoong. Whether it be the cadence of their performances or their love for ATINY, the feelings only get stronger.

"I think it will be continually more bigger and more deeper than before," he said.

What's next for ATEEZ?

With release of "THE WORLD EP. 2: OUTLAW" and "BOUNCY", ATEEZ is excited to show their stages.

This spirit will continue throughout ATEEZ's upcoming performance at KCON LA in August and during the Asia and Latin America legs of their third world tour, "The Fellowship: Break The Wall."

Though there were no spoilers, Hongjoong promised there is more in store from ATEEZ. "We will work really hard the rest of our 2023, so please look forward to it," he said.

No matter what's next, one thing remains constant – the immense devotion ATEEZ has for ATINY.

"It's really hard to express just how grateful I am with just the words 'Thank You,'" said Seonghwa. "We're just so happy and excited to be on stage and meet the fans again. And we’ll make it even spicier than ever."

(G)I-DLE reveals main poster for their upcoming third world tour

(G)I-DLE has just released the main poster for their highly anticipated third world tour. On June 17th, Cube Entertainment, their agency, shared the poster on the group's official social media channels, stirring excitement among fans worldwide.

The striking poster showcases the members of (G)I-DLE in all-black outfits, exuding confidence and charisma. Their intense gazes and flawless visuals are sure to captivate fans, raising anticipation for the upcoming tour.

The 2024 (G)I-DLE WORLD TOUR [iDOL] will kick off in Seoul on August 3rd and 4th. From there, the tour will travel to 14 cities globally, including Hong Kong, Tokyo, Tacoma, Auckland, Anaheim, Houston, Rosemont, Belmont Park, Taipei, Bangkok, Macau, Melbourne, and Sydney.

About (G)I-DLE

(G)I-DLE is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment in 2018, consisting of members Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua. Initially a sextet, the group became a quintet after Soojin's departure in August 2021. Known for their musical versatility and self-production skills, (G)I-DLE has distinguished themselves as one of the top South Korean girl groups outside the "big four" record labels.

With a bold and sensual style, (G)I-DLE's music spans multiple genres, including moombahton and hip hop, and often explores themes of self-love, female empowerment, and self-acceptance. Critics have praised their eclectic style, symbolic lyrics, and confident performances.

The group's debut single, "Latata," released on May 2, 2018, reached number 12 on the Circle Digital Chart. They achieved greater success with "Hwaa," peaking at number five, followed by their first number-one hit, "Tomboy," from their album I Never Die (2022). "Tomboy" topped the Circle album charts and was certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA). Their subsequent single, "Nxde," also topped the Circle Chart, making (G)I-DLE the only artist to achieve two perfect all-kills in 2022.

Their extended play, I Feel (2023), produced the hit single "Queencard," which became their third number-one single in South Korea and their first record to sell over one million copies domestically. It also sold two million copies worldwide in 2023, according to the IFPI. They made history as the first act from an independent label to appear on the Mediabase Top 40 Radio airplay charts and the US Billboard Pop Airplay chart with a non-English song.

(G)I-DLE's second studio album, 2 (2024), continued their commercial success, selling over one million copies in South Korea. The album featured the top-ten lead single "Super Lady" and the number-one hit "Fate," which found success despite not being released as a single.

With their dynamic music and powerful performances, (G)I-DLE continues to break boundaries and captivate audiences worldwide. The upcoming world tour promises to be a spectacular showcase of their talent and artistry.
