Few moments are more frustrating during travel than when the baggage carousel stops and you realize your bag didn’t make it. While mobile tracking helps airlines make sure that your checked luggage arrives at your destination safely and on time, it is still a far from perfect system. During 2022, approximately 26 million bags were mishandled worldwide, according to SITA, an IT provider for the air transport industry. That’s about 7.6 out of every 1,000 passengers that are mishandled (meaning delayed, damaged, lost, or stolen). And while some airlines will compensate passengers with miles if their bags are delayed, it’s still a high enough figure that some travelers might wonder if there’s another—better—option.

Enter: luggage shipping services.

In recent years, a number of baggage shipping companies have sprung up, offering a potentially attractive alternative to checking bags for travelers, especially those who don’t care for the hassle of lugging bags through busy airports. Some even cost less than baggage fees for checked bags on airlines, especially if you’re shipping multiple bags. While most U.S.-based airlines charge $30 or $35 for your first bag, the prices increase significantly with additional pieces of luggage. For example, on United, the first bag per customer is $35, then $45 for a second, $150 for a third, and $200 for a fourth. Special items, such as bikes, skis, and golf clubs, are often subject to oversize luggage surcharges. Shipping companies, however, offer the same price per bag, no matter how many you choose to send.

Luggage shipping companies also offer additional services like at-home pickup and drop-off and taking bulkier items (like golf clubs, ski equipment , or bicycles ). Here are 10 great luggage shipping services to use , in no particular order.

1. Luggage Forward

Cost : $89 for a 25 lb. bag; $99 for 50 lb. bag; $149 for 75 lb. bag. Also, $89 for standard skis or snowboards; $99 for a standard golf bag; $189 for a bicycle case for five business days of shipping.

Boston-based, Luggage Forward , ships luggage domestically and in more than 200 countries worldwide, but it specializes in shipping to cruise ships (meaning the bag will be in the passengers stateroom on embarkation) around the world. Luggage Forward’s prices include doorstep pickup and delivery (from your home or office to your hotel or cruise ship and back), 24-hour phone support, insurance (that covers lost and damaged items), shipping labels that are mailed to clients, and an on-time delivery guarantee that promises a full refund and up to $500 in additional expense reimbursement if the bags don’t make it by the quoted date.

2. SendMyBag

Cost : Prices are the cheapest within Europe, starting at £20 (US$25 at current exchange rates), for bags up to 30 kg (66 lb.). From the United States to Europe, expect prices to begin at £109 (US$135) depending on the destination.

SendMyBag , a U.K.-based shipping service, is a solid choice for those traveling within Europe—in many cases, its rates are cheaper than airlines (shipping from the U.K. to Spain, for example, is just £35, or US$43, for a 24 kg—or 53 lb.—bag).

It’s also a good option for those moving to a new country, either long-term or to work abroad , as the company provides users with all the information and forms they need for the bags to make it through customs hassle free (a process that can be challenging to navigate on one’s own).

Travelers just need to print their labels and schedule a day for pickup, either from their home, dorm, or office. From there SendMyBag collects it and gets it to your next address. Most bags are delivered within four business days.

3. LuggageToShip

Cost : Prices start at $30 and go up from there based on how far your luggage will be traveling and the overall weight.

This New York City–based budget-friendly shipping service ships around the world. The company is able to ship everything from suitcases to boxes to sporting equipment. What makes LuggageToShip unique is that it offers free storage—it will hang onto any item for up to six months (after that it’s $10 per month). This luggage shipping service, based in Boston, offers some rates that are comparable to what the airlines charge for checked bags if travelers are willing to send their suitcases off five or six days in advance of their departure and receive them five or six days after their return.

While not quite a shipping company, London-based AirPortr offers a check-in service, which involves collecting passengers’ bags from their home, office, or hotel and checking them at select U.K. and Switzerland airports. AirPortr says the service is intended to free up passengers who want to move around the city without their bags before their flight as well as to assist families trying to manage the transport of children and bags, sports travelers hauling equipment, and elderly or reduced-mobility passengers unable to carry their bags. Airportr recommends scheduling your pickup for the day before your flight.

Cost: Starts at $35 and may increase based on how far your luggage will be traveling and the overall weight.

ShipGo , headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida, will pick up bags from your home, business, or hotel and have them delivered to a destination of your choosing in more than 180 countries (including some fairly remote locales, like Fiji, Bangladesh, and Seychelles). Travelers can schedule the shipment date online and then attach the provided shipping labels. ShipGo offers an on-time delivery guarantee, free insurance on every shipment (that covers loss or damage), and real-time tracking.

8-10. UPS, FedEx, and DHL

Cost : $50–$75 for suitcases under 50 pounds; $100 for a 70 lb. bag, all with four-day ground shipping.

Of course, traditional shipping companies, like, UPS , FedEx , and DHL, can get your bag to your destination, too. However, don’t expect the same amenities as boutique operators that specialize in sending luggage. You’ll still have to drop your suitcase (either as is or boxed) at one of their shipping centers or schedule a one-time pickup several days before you leave, but at least you’ll receive a tracking number so that you can follow your items along in their journey.

You can use this company to ship luggage, boxes, and any sports gear. Naturally, the service is most affordable if you’re traveling within the continental US. But it’s more than $250 to ship a carry-on from Canada to Germany. I wouldn’t recommend Luggage Free for overseas travel, simply because many other services are just as reliable but much more affordable.

Luggage Free has a great rating on Trustpilot – 4.8 stars across more than 2,800 reviews. It’s safe to say they’re reliable, especially since most negative reviews complain about damaged luggage and shipping delays. This isn’t something Luggage Free has control over, and it can happen with any item that you’re shipping with a courier service.

LugLess is a domestic luggage delivery service that operates within the United States. They don’t do international shipping, so they’re only a valid option if you’re traveling from one US city to another. LugLess uses UPS and FedEx to ship luggage all over the country and they ship anything from cardboard boxes to skis.

Also, LugLess isn’t just for shipping luggage to your vacation destination. You can use them to ship boxes if you’re moving, send stuff to your kid at camp, and you can even ship luggage to schools across the US.

You can choose whether you want to ship your luggage with UPS or FedEx, and you also get to choose between several different support plans. The Minimal one is free and it includes no insurance, refunds, or guarantees. The Basic support plan that offers up to $200 of insurance value, partial refunds, and email support is only $7 (each way).

LugLess has an overage rating of 4.6 across more than 4,200 reviews on Trustpilot , which is pretty good. More than 80% are five-star reviews and only 5% are poor one-star reviews. The service is very reliable and most issues that arise are because of the shipping partners and accidents that LugLess has no control over.

One thing to note about the bad reviews is that most people complained about surcharges a few weeks after the original shipping date. This is due to FedEx – it takes them up to three weeks to send billing adjustments to the company. If your bag was bigger than you stated, you could get an extra charge a few weeks later.

This is an excellent service if you don’t want to waste any time packing and handling luggage. But it’s also pricier than other luggage delivery services – the subscription to the virtual closet is around $10 per month, and then it’s about $99 per round trip to have your clothes cleaned and shipped to your destination.

The standard subscription includes three-day shipping to and from your destination, so you will need to arrange the luggage delivery a few days in advance. They can also do overnight shipping, but that’s another $100 for a round trip. In addition to the cost, there's the hassle of dragging your gear through the airport, and the suspense of waiting for it at the carousel after you land.

If you need to check a third bag or an overweight or oversize item like a golf bag or skis, the price and aggravation factor rise accordingly.

A growing number of companies will take care of your luggage for you, and your possessions will be waiting for you when you check in to your hotel, home rental, or in the case of your kids, their college dorm or summer camp. The costs of their services can vary widely. It's often more expensive, although new entrants are bringing the price down. Depending on what you're hauling, you may even save a little money.

So when should you pay someone else to schlep your stuff? Generally speaking, when it could spell the difference between an uneventful journey and a trip from hell.

"It can be worth the extra money if you're transporting something valuable or that you can't easily bring home," says Shannon McMahon, editor at the expert travel site SmarterTravel . Others may simply go for the advantages of traveling light, or to protect their bag from getting mauled by airport handlers.

However, if you're a last-minute packer, these services might not be for you; in order to guarantee that your bag will arrive when you do, you'll need to ship it several days in advance.

To decide, first familiarize yourself with the players and be clear about what you're getting: Prices are pegged to the delivery speed and the level of customer service you want.

Depending on which shipper you use, the charge to ship one bag ranges from $19.99 for a carry-on size bag on a short trip to more than $200 for one-day delivery and door-to-door pickup and delivery. (At most airlines, the minimum charge to check luggage on a domestic flight is now $30 for the first bag and $40 for a second; if your bag is over 50 pounds, or over the standard size, it will cost at least $100 to check.) Pros: Because these companies are relatively small, you are likely to get more personal service than if you were dealing with, say, a major airline. Most will pick up at your house, and if your itinerary changes, an agent will handle all the details of rerouting your luggage.

Cons: It can still be pricey compared with the airlines. And on the return trip, you will arrive home before your bags do, so you can't pack anything you'll need right away. On the other hand, airlines don't always get your luggage to you so fast, either. Last year, U.S. airlines "mishandled" 1.8 million bags (that's lost, delayed, mishandled, or pilfered bags), up from 1.56 million in 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation .

Delivery Companies

FedEx, UPS, and the U.S. Post Office: These familiar names will ship your gear based on the size and weight of your bag, the distance it needs to travel, and the speed of service that you select. UPS has several sizes of luggage boxes designed for this purpose, but unlike the airlines' prices, the actual cost of shipping varies by length of trip. For a 40-pound bag, it would cost $42.12 to have it picked up and shipped from New York to Cleveland, but $89.50 to send it all the way to Los Angeles. FedEx also will ship your bags.

Charles Kron, an Atlanta businessman, says he got hooked on using FedEx to send clothing and other items ahead to his hotel on longer trips, because having to lug bags crimps his style. He says he likes to have the flexibility to change plans and stand by for a flight.

"That's impossible if I have checked bags," he says. But his strategy is based in part on being able to use his company's discounted rates on FedEx, which give him a percentage off the standard rate.

Pros: You'll get a tracking number so that you'll know where your bag is at all times. For overweight bags, or for sending bikes, surfboards, or a semester's worth of gear for a student, it could be a better deal than checking it with an airline. FedEx can also place your suitcase or wheelie in a clear plastic pouch for added protection, but at an added cost.

Cons: There's far less personal service than with the specialist companies, and unless you have access to a special rate that can lower the cost, for one or two bags you'll probably still save money with an airline (unless they're overweight or oversized). And it could take up to a week to see your luggage again upon return.

Niche Services

Packing and concierge services: DUFL, a fairly new player, has an unusual business model: It will store your travel wardrobe for you at its warehouse, and when you're ready to go, it will pack and ship your bag to your hotel room. At the conclusion of your trip, it will collect your bag, take care of cleaning, and store it all until the next trip. The cost begins at $99 per bag for each domestic roundtrip, plus a $9.95 monthly storage fee. Through DUFL Sports, it will also store items like surfboards and bikes, though prices depend on the type of equipment.

International Services: For international travelers, the cost of sending luggage ahead can be significant. But in addition to Luggage Forward and Luggage Free, which offer international delivery to cruise ships, hotels, and schools abroad, a couple of small companies, mostly based in Europe, offer shipping services. These can be especially useful for study abroad participants. Send My Bag, based in the U.K., is one such company that specializes in shipping for students.

Remote Bag Drops: Bags Inc., a baggage delivery company in the U.S., partners with major airlines at several U.S. airports (Denver, Orlando, and Tampa) to operate off-site bag-drop locations, usually within a few miles of the terminal, letting you avoid the airport scrum.

The best part? The service is free to customers; airlines and airports split the cost. They also operate at cruise ship ports. Regular airline bag fees still apply.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
