Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, a guide to travel by tgv.

TGVs or Trains à Grande Vitesse are the pride of SNCF (French Railways), running at up to 300 km/h (186 mph) on a high-speed network linking towns & cities across France.  In fact, trains reach 320 km/h (199 mph) on the newer TGV-Est & TGV-Rhin-Rhone routes.  Smooth & quiet even at high speed, it's a relaxing way to travel.  Some TGVs are single-deck , an increasing number are double-deck TGV Duplex .

Since 2017 SNCF's TGVs have been marketed under the brand name InOui , French for unheard of or exceptional .

Fares & tickets

Seat reservation is compulsory on TGVs, all tickets include a seat  reservation on a specific train.  TGV seat maps .

Fares vary like air fares, with cheap Prems fares if you book in advance, much more expensive flexible fares if you buy close to departure date.

Paris to Nice starts at €25, Paris to Bordeaux from €20, if you book a cheap Prems fare in advance.  Booking opens up to 4 months ahead.

Buy tickets at www.raileurope.com or www.thetrainline.com (both easy to use, in €, £ or $, overseas credit cards no problem, small booking fee or at the French Railways website www.sncf-connect.com , same fares, no fee.

You can select seats from a seat map when booking a 1st class ticket at www.thetrainline.com or www.sncf-connect.com .

2nd class seats, luggage & facilities on board.

Luggage limits:   Since February 2024 SNCF has had a more formal luggage policy for TGV InOui which will be enforced from September:  There are no weight limits, but you must be able to carry it yourself in one go.  You can carry either 1 hand luggage + 2 suitcases or 1 hand luggage + 1 suitcase + 1 specific item.  Your hand luggage can measure up to 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm.  Your suitcase(s) can measure up to 90 cm x 70 cm x 50 cm.  Your specific item (musical instrument, pushchair, bike in cover, folded bike, scooter) can measure up to 130 cm x 90 cm.  Bikes, musical instruments, snowboards, and skis must be under a labelled cover. You can travel with your pair of skis, without a maximum size, one pair per person.  If you exceed these limits there's a €50 fee, but it's not yet clear how tough staff will be.

Travel tips

It's only possible to specify forward-facing seats on a handful of TGV routes which have the Christian Lacroix interiors which feature variable illuminated seat numbers - the correct set of seat numbers illuminate depending which way round the TGV unit enters service.  Such routes include single-deck TGV services on  TGV Est (Paris to Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, but not trains operated by TGV Duplex).  You'll only be given the option to specify forward facing seats if (a) you book using www.raileurope.com or www.thetrainline.com or www.sncf-connect.com and (b) the specific route and type of TGV supports this feature.  Most routes & TGVs don't, it's only a few that do.

Single-deck TGVs

Another TGV refurbishment is in progress, so you'll see interiors like this starting to appear along with a new grey, silver & red TGV livery.

Older interiors

There are still some unrefurbished TGVs knocking about, and these older interiors often don't have power sockets in 2nd class.

Video guide:  Christian Lacroix TGV

The original patterned carpet and mixed lime green and grey seats in 1st class have now been replaced by all-grey seats & grey carpet, watering down the design.

Double-deck TGV Duplex

1st generation tgv duplex.

1st generation TGV Duplex operate on French domestic routes including Paris-Lyon, Paris-Marseille, Paris-Nice, where they work alongside newer 2nd & 3rd generation trains.  There are power sockets at all 1st class seats, but usually not in 2nd class on these first-generation trains.  The first-generation trains are not equipped to run on international routes.

2nd & 3rd generation TGV Duplex

Tgv duplex océane.

3rd generation trains with a completely redesigned interior known as TGV Océane entered service in 2017, initially on the TGV Atlantique route from Paris Montparnasse to Brittany, Bordeaux, Biarritz, Lourdes & Hendaye on the Spanish border.  Some now also operate from Paris to Lyon and the south of France.  All seats in both classes have power sockets & free WiFi, 1st class seats also have USB ports.  A major innovation is that 1st class seats rotate to face direction of travel. The seats at the very end of each car don't rotate.  The new Océane interior may be retrofitted to earlier TGV Duplex sets in due course.

A TGV Duplex Océane from Paris arrived at Bordeaux St Jean.  These TGV Duplex carry the latest grey, silver and red TGV colours and have an all-new interior.

A guide to European Trains

The network of high-speed TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) trains, which have been in existence since 1981, connects 200 destinations in both France and the rest of Europe. It is this network most renowned for speed, reaching a record 357mph in test runs, which is able to offer passengers amazing journey times such as Paris to Geneva in 3 hours 45 minutes or Brussels to Avignon in under 5 hours.

Running on specially designed and built high-speed rail tracks, the idea for these highly efficient transport links originated back in the 1960s when the growth of the airline industry was becoming ever more apparent. The environmentally preferable train links were therefore developed as an alternative. The first link to be formally opened in 1981 from Paris-Lyon virtually destroyed its airborne competitors. The great advantage that this network has is that it is able to run on the infrastructure which is already in place and therefore linking additional towns and cities is relatively inexpensive.

The latest TGV rolling stock to streak across the French countryside consists of double-decker trains. These therefore double the carrying capacity of the trains whilst still maintaining the same speed and service. All TGV trains offer catering facilities, family carriages and private telephone areas to help make the journey even more convenient.

How to Ride the High-Speed TGV Trains in France

Trains   a grand vitesse , or TGV trains, are high-speed bullet trains operating within France. They are built by the French engineering company Alstom and operated by SNCF (the French rail company). TGV trains run on electricity and can only achieve their fastest cruising speeds on special high-speed tracks called LGV (Ligne á Grande Vitesse).

The trains cruise at up to 186 miles per hour, meaning that a TGV train makes the journey from Paris to Zurich in six hours, or Brussels to Avignon in just five. If you're traveling around France and don't have much time for your trip, the TGV is a great option for fitting in as much as possible.

Reservations and Ticket Cost for TGV Trains

Reservations on TGV trains are mandatory, so whenever you buy your ticket, you'll need to also book your seat. As you might expect, TGV trains are more expensive than "regular" speed trains in France. Before you buy your ticket, you might want to also compare budget European airfares , as you might be able to fly for cheaper.

If you do find airfare to be more inexpensive, remember to add up the additional costs that might make it more expensive and less convenient. For example, trains often take you to the main train station in a European city, where  hostels are often a few steps away, whereas budget European airlines often land at out-of-the-way airports, and will involve taxis or more expensive transportation options to get to your room.

Where to Buy TGV Tickets

There are several ways to buy tickets for TGV trains. The best and most affordable way of doing so is via the SNCF website. There, you'll be able to enter in your chosen destination, travel dates, and whether you're looking for a one-way or return ticket. Once you've entered that information, you'll be able to see schedules and prices.

Alternatively, you could book your ticket through the Rail Europe website, but it does cost more than booking directly through SNCF. Rail Europe allows you to book all of your train tickets for your trip across Europe in one place, which can make planning much more convenient.

Finally, if you're more of a spontaneous traveler, you can opt to buy your tickets in person at a train station. The main benefit to doing this is that you get to make up your travel plans as you go along and won't be tied to moving on to a new destination when you don't want to. The disadvantage is that you'll run the risk of a sold-out trip, and thus, it's not recommended if you're traveling in the middle of summer. It also works out to be most expensive if you book at the last minute from a train station.

How to Save Money on TGV Tickets

One way to save money on your TGV train ticket is by booking your tickets as soon as you possibly can. Tickets are at their cheapest for TGV trains three months before your departure date and gradually increase in price after that.

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Gabby Petito once asked Brian Laundrie to stop calling her names, according to a letter she wrote released in a collection of FBI documents, signaling tensions between the couple prior to the 2021 road trip that would end with Laundrie killing his 22-year-old fiancée.

"Brian, you know how much I love you. So (and I'm writing this with love) just please stop crying and stop calling me names because we’re a team and I’m here with you," Petito wrote in the undated letter, included among 366 pages of records from the FBI’s investigation of the case. "I'm always going to have your back."

"You in pain is killing me," Petito writes. "I’m not trying to be negative but I'm frustrated there’s not more I can do."

While it's unclear when the letter was written, Petito references plans to work together on the van that they would later take on the trip, which ended late in the summer of 2021 with Petito’s disappearance. She was found more than a week after her parents reported her missing, strangled in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. The coroner determined she had been dead for three to four weeks before being found.

By that time, Laundrie – who returned to his parents’ North Port, Florida, home without Petito – had vanished into a nature reserve, leading to a weekslong manhunt. His remains were eventually found alongside a number of his personal items, including a notebook in which the FBI said he admitted killing Petito. A medical examiner determined he died by suicide .

Petito’s letter to Laundrie makes up just two of the hundreds of pages included in the FBI documents published on a website where the agency shares records released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests.

A number of the documents are redacted, but they outline the FBI’s efforts to trace the couple’s movements around the time of Petito’s disappearance reported on Sept. 11, 2021, recounting interviews with witnesses and descriptions of surveillance footage captured at gas stations and stores across the U.S.

Also included are scores of photographs of items recovered by authorities after a search warrant was executed on Sept. 20, 2021, including Petito’s letter to Laundrie. The address where the warrant was executed is redacted, but the records indicate it stemmed from an investigation in North Port.

Asked about the letter, Steven Bertolino, an attorney for Laundrie’s parents, told CNN Tuesday that Petito and Laundrie "both had their moments and had their issues."

"This is a tragedy that I’ve said all along that has affected two families," he said, describing a "lopsidedness" that has taken a "toll" on his clients.

"There are always two sides to every story, but as of this moment, there has only been one side put out there, and that’s the side that everybody’s running with," Bertolino said.

CNN has reached out to an attorney for Petito’s parents for comment on the letter.

There is no context for Petito’s letter, and it’s unclear why the couple was at odds when she wrote it. But it appears to foreshadow strains in the relationship that would spill out into the open over the course of their trip, perhaps most notably in Moab, Utah, where police body camera footage captured the pair two weeks before Petito’s death.

The incident – now at the heart of a lawsuit by Petito's parents against the Moab Police Department – occurred after a witness “saw Brian hit Gabby,” according to an amended complaint filed earlier this year.

The footage shows Moab police officers talking to Petito and Laundrie, who admitted having a fight in which Petito said she struck her fiancé first. The officers let the couple go after they agreed to spend the night apart.

The lawsuit claims the officers improperly concluded Petito was the "primary" aggressor despite injuries to her face, failing to recognize that Petito’s attempt to take responsibility for the altercation was an "obvious" sign she was a victim of domestic abuse.

"The purpose of this lawsuit is to honor Gabby’s legacy by demanding accountability and working toward systemic changes to protect victims of domestic abuse and violence and prevent such tragedies in the future," James W. McConkie, an attorney for Petito’s parents, said in a statement when the lawsuit was first filed.

The city of Moab has previously said its officers "acted with kindness, respect, and empathy" toward Petito, noting they "are not responsible" for her death.

"The attorneys for the Petito family seem to suggest that somehow our officers could see into the future based on this single interaction. In truth, on Aug. 12, no one could have predicted the tragedy that would occur weeks later and hundreds of miles away, and the City of Moab will ardently defend against this lawsuit," the city said.

North Alabama fall

Hayden Hill survived a 60-foot fall off a cliff while in Rome on a class trip and suffered “extensive injuries” GoFundMe

A north Alabama teen who survived a 60-foot fall off a cliff while in Rome on a class trip and suffered “extensive injuries” has been nicknamed “The Miracle Boy” by Italians.

“The fact that he survived this fall is nothing short of a miracle,” said Lindsey Sanderson, a New Hope resident who organized a GoFundMe on behalf of Hayden Hill, who is in need of a medical aircraft to fly him and his family back to the United States.

Hayden recently graduated from New Hope High School and was on “a class trip of a lifetime” when he fell off the cliff, Sanderson said.

“In Italy, he is called ‘The Miracle Boy,’” she said.

Hayden suffered a dislocated hip and femur along with “excessive injuries to his ankle.”

His mother, Sharon Hicks, flew to Italy to be by her son’s side in the hospital. He will likely need additional surgeries once back in the U.S.

“At this time, Hayden will more than likely need to be transported back to the states in a medical aircraft that will cost more than we could possibly imagine,” Sanderson said. “The goal is to get Hayden back to the states no matter the means or the cost.”

As of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the GoFundMe for Hayden, called “Operation, Let’s Bring Hayden Home!” has raised $14,746. The fundraising goal is $50,000.
