25 Best Things to Do in Ljubljana (Slovenia)

If you’ve never been to Ljubljana you better have a good excuse. In the centre of Slovenia , it’s a clean, forward-thinking city with architecture has an Italian inflection. Ljubljana owes some of its beauty to a catastrophe: An earthquake in 1895 reduced whole neighbourhoods to ruins. But this only gave free rein to visionaries like Jože Plečnik to build Art Nouveau masterpieces from the rubble.

Ljubljana is young, very hip and green as can be: In 2016 it was the European Green Capital, in a part of Europe not always known for environmental friendliness. The city centre is now mostly car-free, public transport is low-emissions and there’s a new cycling network. The squat-turned-cultural zone Metelkova is the go-to for hipsters and live music, and has nightspots, bars and public art installations in an old barracks.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Ljubljana :

1. Prešeren Square

Preseren Square

Right by the Ljubljanica, Prešeren Square is the place where the city meets up and celebrate.

If there’s an event going on in Ljubljana there’s a good chance it will happen in this space.

With a rough triangular outline, the square is at the convergence of a number of major arteries, and gained its current opulent appearance after the earthquake in 1895. This was when regal halls replaced the medieval houses that had been here before, joining the Baroque Church of the Anunciation, which dates to 1795. The square takes its name from the 19th-century poet France Prešeren whose work “Zdravljica”, “A Toast”, became Slovenia’s national anthem.

You can find his statue next to the Central Pharmacy, across the square from his unrequited love and muse Julija Primic.

2. Triple Bridge

Triple Bridge

Ushering you off Prešeren Square is a group of three bridges decorated with stone balustrades and lanterns.

The central bridge of the three is much older than the two that flank it, and dates to 1842. This was intended for road traffic, while the two alongside were added for pedestrians at the start of the 1930 and were the work of Jože Plečnik, Ljubljana’s most revered architect.

Also dating from this project are the riverside terraces lined with poplars, and the temple-like flower shop that connects with the colonnade of the Central Market on the right bank.

3. Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle

When you’re looking up from Ljubljana’s squares, the castle seems dauntingly high.

If you’ve got the mettle you can try to get up there on foot, but there’s also a tourist train and a funicular railway.

The castle has changed a lot since it first came together 900 years ago.

The early stone wood and stone fortress was succeeded by more practical military buildings, becoming an Arsenal in the 16th century as a regional bulwark against an Ottoman invasion.

The main courtyard is free to enter, and has a cafe, nightclub, galleries and a restaurant.

You have to pay to ascend the watchtower to look over Ljubljana, and included in this is a “Time Machine” tour.

This recounts Ljubljana’s key historical events with 3D animations and guides in period costume.

Suggested tour : Ljubljana and Ljubljana Castle Sightseeing Tour

4. Dragon Bridge

Dragon Bridge

The four intimidating dragons that stand sentinel on each corner of this bridge are an emblem for Ljubljana and show up all over the city.

Taken from the coat of arms they’re strikingly lifelike (supposing dragons existed!), were rendered in sheet copper in the A. M. Beschorner factory in Vienna, and designed by the bridge’s architect Jurij Zaninović.

The bridge was opened in 1901 and is in the Viennese Secessionist style, an offshoot of Art Nouveau.

At the time it was also a technical achievement as one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe.

5. Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park

Within just a few streets of the Ljubljanica you can be in a green space that pushes out for more than two kilometres.

This begins with the elegant gardens and avenues landscaped in 1813 and extends up the slope onto the wilder Rožnik Hill, which is crisscrossed by nature trails.

In the lower reaches there are dignified properties like the Baroque Cekin Mansion, which houses the Contemporary History Museum.

Tivoli Park also hosts a tropical greenhouse managed by the city’s Botanical Gardens and sits beside a pond.

But if there’s one reason to come it’s to walk the Jakopič Promenade, an arrow-straight avenue that runs from the eastern entrance up to the Neoclassical Tivoli Castle.

6. Ljubljana Cathedral

Saint Nicholas Cathedral Of Ljubljana

This monument has had a few different forms since the 13th century because of fires and war.

The current Baroque design though has survived since the beginning of the 18th century, while the splendid dome came later, in the 1840s.

It’s an awe-inspiring building replete with art by a number of Italian Baroque masters.

The likes of Francesco Robba, the Groppelli brothers, Angelo Putti and Giulio Quaglio the Younger contributed the interior’s frescoes, paintings and sculpture in the 18th century.

More recent works are the astounding dome fresco, painted by the Slovenian Matevž Langus in 1844 and the 20th-century artist Tone Demšar’s main portal door, which sports a relief presenting the history of Slovenia.

7. Central Market

Ljubljana Central Market

Jože Plečnik also designed this market in the early 1930s as part of his beautiful set piece that included the Triple Bridge.

It hugs the riverside between this bridge and the Dragon Bridge and is on the site of an old diocesan college for girls that collapsed during the earthquake in 1895. That handsome colonnade on the fringe of Prešeren Square shelters stalls selling herbs, spices and handicrafts, while further along are bakery stalls, cured meat, dried fruit and nuts, dairy products, fresh fruit and veg and fish.

The market is open every day except Sunday, while the covered sections have slightly shorter opening times to the open air stalls.

8. Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

Franciscan Church Of The Annunciation

A solemn presence on Prešeren Square, this church is in an early Baroque style from the middle of the 17th century.

The facade is painted a pastel red, which holds meaning for the Franciscan order.

It’s one of the sights to behold on the square, and has pinnacles, pilasters with Ionic capitals, niches and a statue of the Virgin with Child on the pediment.

The inside is lavishly furnished, although the Baroque frescoes were destroyed by cracks after he earthquake.

If there’s one unmissable work it’s Francesco Robba’s 18th-century altarpiece, but it’s worth poking around to see a stone cross by Jože Plečnik in a side chapel, while the new ceiling frescoes were provided by the Impressionist Matej Sternen in the 1930s.

9. National Gallery of Slovenia

National Gallery Of Slovenia

Fronting Tivoli Park is Slovenia’s premier historical art museum, displaying works from medieval times to the 1900s.

It’s in a Revivalist palace from the end of the 19th century and has modern extensions built in the early 90s and 2001. There are more than 600 works to peruse in here, from Gothic liturgical art to pieces by the Italian Baroque painters and sculptors who received many commissions in Ljubljana in the 1700s.

You can also delve into the Slovenian Impressionist movement via pieces by Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar and Matija Jama.

But if there’s one standout it’s the Francesco Robba’s Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers.

This is the original sculpture for Ljubljana’s most celebrated fountain, brought to the modern glass extension to protect it from the elements.

10. Metelkova Mesto

Metelkova Mesto

Soon after independence, a disused army barracks from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was occupied by squatters to stop it from being torn down.

This large space in the centre of Ljubljana has gone on to become an autonomous urban enclave, not unlike the famous Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen.

It’s an alternative haven where almost every wall is covered in graffiti and imaginative murals.

Come for photos during the day, and return at night when it’s full of life.

After dark the bars and clubs book live bands and DJs, and there are outdoor concerts in summer.

11. National Museum of Slovenia

National Museum Of Slovenia

This museum, devoted to Slovenia’s history and culture is based in two buildings in Ljubljana.

The main exhibition is on Prešernova Street, while there’s a new building for the applied arts department on Metelkova.

In the former there are some amazing artefacts to checkout going back deep into prehistory.

One is what is believed to be a fragment of a Neanderthal flute (Divje Babe Flute), whittled from a bear femur 60,000 years ago.

Ljubljana’s Roman origins as the city of Emona is laid bare with models, animated films and excavated items like a hoard of coins.

The most exciting of these is the lapidarium, where 200 inscribed stones are on the ground floor and in a glass pavilion.

12. Republic Square

Trg Republike Ljubljana

This stern Communist-era plaza is without the sumptuous architecture of Prešeren Square, and was instead laid out as the modern centre of the city in the 1960s.

During that time, many of the Roman artefacts in the National Museum were found by accident when a shopping arcade and car park were being built beneath the square.

The Monument to Revolution from 1975, the Slovenian Parliament and the monolithic TR3 and Ljubljanska Banak office buildings give the square an almost oppressive feel.

But it’s also a place of real meaning, as the spot where Slovenian Independence was declared in 1991. In mid-winter there’s a big skating rink on the square, large enough to host ice hockey matches.

13. National Museum of Contemporary History

National Museum Of Contemporary History

The 20th century in Slovenia was anything if not an interesting phase of the country’s history.

And this slick museum in the noble confines of the Cekin Mansion lays it all out for you.

You’ll start with the First World War, move into the fractious interwar period , onto the Second World War, through Tito’s regime and end with Slovene independence in 1991. Each period is backed up with authentic artefacts and documents, including uniforms, costumes, furniture, weapons, medals, archive photography, farming implements like a vintage tractor and a whole lot more.

14. Congress Square

Congress Square

This cultured central square has played host to some momentous occasions in Slovenian history.

Independence from Austria-Hungary was announced here in 1918, while Josip Broz Tito addressed the crowds from the balcony of the university building in 1945. Later, the first free protest took place here in 1988, in a movement that would end with Slovene independence in 1991. Finally in 1999 Bill Clinton read the first line of the Slovenian National Anthem to a crowd on this square.

Dating to1821, it’s a formidable space that has civic buildings and palaces on all sides and the Zvezda park at the centre.

A couple of sights to note are the resplendent Slovenian Philharmonic and the copy of a Roman gilded bronze statue excavated on this site in 1836.

15. Town Hall

Ljubljana Town Hall

The municipal seat has been at this location on Town Square since the 15th century.

In the early 18th century that first Gothic building was reworked in the Venetian Baroque style with plans drawn up by the Italian architect Carlo Martinuzzi.

In the vestibule you can find a plaque from the Gothic predecessor with the city’s coat of arms, as well as a sculpture of Hercules and the Nemean lion from a lost fountain dating to the 1600s.

The Town Hall is open for exhibitions, and you can also put your name down for a tour of rooms normally closed to the public.

A highlight in the main courtyard is a glorious fountain depicting Narcissus by the sculptor Francesco Robba.

16. Robba Fountain

Ljubljana Robba Fountain

Even if you’ve seen the original sculpture in the National Gallery, you still have to spare a moment for this fountain in front of the Town Hall as it’s a symbol of Ljubljana.

What you see is a replica, replacing the original which was removed in 2006 for safekeeping.

As the name tells you it’s another work by the prolific Francesco Robba, and depicts three male figures pouring water from jugs.

These represent the three rivers of the Carniola region: The Ljubljanica, the Sava and the Krka.

The design, right down to the obelisk above the fountain, is borrowed from Rome’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) at Piazza Navona.

17. Museum of Illusions

Ljubljana Museum Of Illusions

In a townhouse on Congress Square is an offbeat museum that draws you into the world of illusions and makes you question your own eyes.

Kids might get the most out of this attraction, but grownups could also spend a fun hour or so here.

You’ll move from room to room, each with something strange going on: There’s an Anti-Gravity Room, where everything seems to float, or the dizzying Vortex Tunnel, which seems to spin around you, making it a challenge to keep your balance.

There’s are 40 exhibits in all, with a light-hearted and stealthily educational theme.

18. The Skyscraper (Nebotičnik)

Nebotičnik

When this 13-storey tower was topped off in 1933 it became the tallest building in the Balkans and was in the top ten for Europe.

At the time it was equipped with all the latest conveniences, like air-conditioning, speedy elevators and a central heating system.

Even now the Skyscraper gives you the most complete view of Ljubljana, encompassing the castle and the mountains like Šmarna Gora to the north.

There’s a restaurant at the viewing terrace on the 12th floor, below a cafe/nightclub, and if you have the legs you can take on the Art Deco spiral stairway to the top.

19. Art Nouveau Architecture

People's Loan Bank

In addition to the Dragon Bridge there are a dozen Art Nouveau buildings around Ljubljana’s centre.

Most are from that phase of intensive construction after the earthquake, and while none are tourist attractions in their own right they can be combined into a 12-stop tour of the city for architecture lovers.

The People’s Loan Bank building at no. 4 Miklošičeva Ulica is sublime, with a delicate wrought iron balcony and two large classical statues of female figures on its roof.

From 1921 is the Vurnik House, which is impossible to miss for its red walls and bright patterns in the Slovenian national style around its windows.

More conventional, but no less lovely is Urbanc House on the corner of Prešeren Square, dating to 1902 and admired for the metal and glass canopy above the entrance.

20. Plečnik House

Ljubljana Plecnik House

Also on an architectural theme you can get inside the mind of Jože Plečnik the man who revamped Ljubljana in the interwar period.

Plečnik’s impact on this city is compared to Antoni Gaudí’s in Barcelona, and his dream was to turn Ljubljana into a modern version of Ancient Athens.

Plečnik’s house and studio complex is on Karunova Ulica and is almost exactly how he left it when he passed away in 1957. There are two houses side by side and a garden with a lapidary collection, and the architect’s furniture, tools and sketches and other possessions are still in place.

The exhibition goes into detail on the buildings Plečnik contributed to Ljubljana, and reveals some plans that never came to fruition.

21. Ljubljanica River Trip

Ljubljanica River Trip

At the Breg embankment on the left bank of the river you can hop aboard a cruise boat for a jaunt along the Ljubljanica.

It’s probably the best way to appreciate Jože Plečnik’s majestic urban design, including the Triple Bridge and the arcade and colonnade on the revitalised waterfront beside it.

On Ljubljana’s website you can sign up for a cruise aboard the “Ljubljanica”, a traditional boat made of larch and oak, or on one of the more modern glass-covered vessels.

Trips last an hour and include a commentary of the sights.

If you’re really up for trying something different this is a journey you can also make on a canoe or stand-up paddleboard.

22. Ljubljana Zoo

Brown Bear At Ljubljana Zoo

From Tivoli Park you can continue to the lower slopes of Rožnik Hill to get to the city’s zoo.

The attraction is wrapped in hill’s forest and meadows, and despite its small size the animals have large, healthy environments.

There are animals from around the world, and an emphasis on conserving Slovenia’s wildlife in a unique region where the Alps meet the Pannonian Plain and the Mediterranean.

The zoo has 119 species in all, totalling more than 500 individual animals.

The crowd-pleasers are the cheetahs, sea lions, Asian elephant and pair of Siberian tigers, new to the zoo in August 2017. You can watch the sea lions and pelicans being fed throughout at set times each day, and get to know the animals at a typical Slovenian farm.

23. Hire a Bike

Ljubljana By Bike

Going through the tourist office It costs next to nothing to get your hands on a bike for two hours €2.00 or a full day €8.00. And if you get the Ljubljana Card (a multi-pass scheme for museums and attractions) you’ll be able to hire a bike for up to four hours for free.

And there’s a good reason to hire one, as Ljubljana is becoming one of Europe’s best cities to see on two wheels.

A lot of the centre is green and traffic-free, but on top of that the city has invested in cycling infrastructure akin to Copenhagen.

This is all part of a drive to make Ljubljana as environmentally friendly as possible.

Book online : Central Ljubljana Bike Rental

24. Šmarna Gora

Smarna Gora

If you need to break out into the countryside, this park is only ten kilometres north of Ljubljana and brings the wilderness to the suburbs.

Unmistakable for its twin humps, Šmarna Gora is more than 660 metres above sea level, but has been made hospitable by 15 well-tended hiking trails, all serving the summits.

When you make it to the top of the eastern peak you’ll be met by a restaurant and a Baroque church from the early 1700s.

There’s also a Marian column up here from the same century to mark an outbreak of plague that took place in the 1600s.

But the greatest sight is Ljubljana in the distance scattered around at the bottom of Rožnik and Castle hill.

25. Eat Like a Local

Štruklji

If you’re hungry enough to eat a horse, there’s Hot Horse with a horsemeat menu in the Tivoli Park.

Joking aside, this isn’t a dining experience for vegetarians, but if you’re wondering what a horse burger, steak, hot dog or wrap might taste like you’ll get your answer at this stylish, fast-food style eatery.

That isn’t necessarily authentic Slovenian food of course, and if you want to immerse yourself in the city’s cuisine you can book food and beer tours at the Ljubljana’s tourist office.

For something off the cuff, grab some Štruklji, which is a kind of dough, rolled up and filled with sweet fillings like apple, or savoury ones like walnuts or cheese.

#1 Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle courtyard in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Castle is a Ljubljana must-see. Just like in a fairytale, the Ljubljana Castle sits prominently atop a hill complete with a lookout tower and giant, billowing flag. Visible from practically every point in town, it beckons a visit.

Ljubljana Castle History

The Roman castle dates to the 12th century, but has undergone major overhaul – twice – in the last century, giving it a modern look. However, many of the original details remain, like an old prison cell beneath the courtyard and stonework near the chapel.

Getting to the Ljubljana Castle

There are two ways of ascending the hill to the castle in Ljubljana: Funicular or Hike. The modern glass funicular zips visitors to the top of the hill for a small fee.

However, we have always opted to make the steep climb up. Following signs throughout town, visitors are lead down an alley to the trail head. The path splits into two routes: A series of steep switchbacks or a longer, gradual incline around the hill. Either way, there are fantastic views of Ljubljana along the way.

What To See at Ljubljana Castle

Whether you take the funicular or walk the path up the hill, the castle should be #1 on your Ljubljana sightseeing list. Although the Medieval castle has seen many changes since it was first built, it still bears the marks of the city’s history.

Much of the Ljubljana Castle is free to visit – a ticket is only needed to climb the tower and enter the museum exhibits. Entering the courtyard (where there are restaurants and a café), visiting a few key castle sights and wandering the grounds is free of charge.

Ljubljana Top Attractions Inside the Castle

At the base of the castle tower is the old chapel, which is decorated in a colorful Baroque style and full of light. Inside, there’s a demonstration of different writing styles through the centuries.

During World War I, the castle was used as a jail for POWs and political prisoners. Visitors can step inside the prison cells to read details of the detainees and experience the cramped confinement.

Ljubljana Castle Price and Opening Times can be found on the official website and buy your ticket online .

#2 Preseren Square, Ljubljana

View over Preseren Square, Ljubljana

Named for Slovenian poet France Prešeren and marked by his statue, the bright square off the Triple Bridge is the heart of the city.

Prešeren Square sits at the center of six streets. It is the main square in Ljubljana and is nearly always bustling with people. Top features are the many beautiful and historic buildings as well as the dominating Franciscan Church (which is next on our list).

Top Tip : Many Ljubljana tours meet in Preseren Square…more on that at the end of the post.

#3 Franciscan Church (Pink Church, Ljubljana)

What to see in Ljubljana: Experience the city!

The hard-to-miss pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation sits on Preseren Square. It was built between 1646 and 1660 – and is one of the top Ljubljana attractions. In 2008, the church was listed as a Cultural Monument of National Significance in Slovenia.

The stunning Baroque façade and the bright exterior makes it the most photographed Ljubljana church. Step inside to see the rich décor. The dark interior is in sharp contrast to cheerful exterior – and it’s a must see in Ljubljana. Note the elaborate altar and the ceiling frescoes, many of which had to be repainted after an earthquake in the late 1800s.

#4 Triple Bridge Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Triple Bridge

Straddling the Ljubljanica River is the Triple Bridge – another famous landmark in Ljubljana. The three-part bridge was designed by Ljubljana’s famed architect, Jože Plečnik – who is responsible for much of the city’s current style. Walking across the Triple Bridge is one of the top things to do in Ljubljana.

The Triple Bridge connects the oldest part of the town to the modern area of Ljubljana. The structure was built on the site of an older bridge that tended to bottleneck with too many crossings. In 1929, Joze Plecnik designed the three bridges to alleviate the congestion – but he did it with a Venetian flair.

#5 Dragon Bridge Ljubljana

Dragon on Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Built in 1901, the Dragon Bridge is a classic example of the Vienna Secession style (closely related to the Art Nouveau style) used in Ljubljana when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Although the bridge is not particularly extravagant, it was an engineering feat in its time.

What makes the bridge a Ljubljana must see is the four green beasts crouched on the pillars of the Dragon Bridge. They appear to be protecting the castle sitting in the background.

The Dragon Bridge has become one of the popular Ljubljana tourist attractions. Taking a photo of the dragons is practically required when sightseeing Ljubljana!

#6 The Ljubljana Cathedral

What to see in Ljubljana: The Cathedral

The St. Nicolas Church Ljubljana stands as the city’s Cathedral. Decorative inside and out, St. Nicolas is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana for a bit of quiet in the middle of the Old Town.

Before entering, take a look at the main doors. The artwork depicts the history of the Slovenian people, from ancient to current times. The Ljubljana St. Nicolas Cathedral interior is Italian Baroque and includes sculptures and ceiling frescoes.

#7 Ljubljana Market

What to see in Ljubljana: The flower market

The Ljubljana Central Market is comprised of stalls selling fresh produce, a section of clothing and goods, a flower market and an indoor meat and cheese market. The market is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana to experience the city’s vibrant culture.

The adjacent colonnade houses the fish market – along with several small restaurants the dole out freshly prepared meals. It’s one of the fun Ljubljana places to eat lunch while people watching.

Top Tip : Find the Mlekomat – a fresh milk vending machine – one of the unique Ljubljana, Slovenia points of interest!

#8 Ljubljana Town Hall

On the east side of the river, a short stroll from the Triple Bridge, is Town Square (Mestni Trg). The quaint square is home to the Ljubljana Town Hall, a building which dates to the late 1400’s. The structure was renovated in the current Venetian style in the mid-1700’s.

#9 Ljubljana Town Square & Robba Fountain

View of Ljubljana Town Square Robba Fountain

In the center of Town Square is the fanciful Fountain of Three Carniolian Rivers. Also called the Robba Fountain for the Italian who designed it, Francesco Robba.

A top Ljubljana Baroque monument, the fountain was sculpted in the mid-1700’s and stands today as a symbol of the city. However, the fountain in the square is a replica…the original is in the National Gallery of Slovenia.

#10 Ljubljana Old Town

View across the river of Old Town Ljubljana

Walking south from the Town Hall on Mestni Trg, which was once the main street in Ljubljana, leads through the oldest parts of the city. About halfway along, Mestni Trg turns into Stari Trg, and this entire stretch is one of the top Ljubljana places to visit for tourists.

The wide pedestrian street is perfect for strolling. The Ljubljana Old Town restaurants that line the route sell traditional fare and there are shops selling local products that occupy the historic buildings.

#11 Levstikov Trg

Fountain at Levstikov Trg, Ljubljana, Slovenia

It’s just a 5 minute walk to the end of the street where it opens into Levstikov Trg. While one of the top Ljubljana, Slovenia tourist attractions, it’s our favorite square. In the center stands the Hercules Fountain, a replica of a 17th century fountain.

Also look for #34 Stari Trg. It is the Sticna Mansion, which dates to the year 1628 and is one of the top Ljubljana points of interest for it’s fine architectural style featuring stone carvings and arched wooden doorways.

#12 Upper Square, Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Upper Town

Moving away from the Ljubljana center to the east is an inclined street that leads to Upper Square (Gornji Trg). This is one of the Ljubljana best places to visit to see the oldest part of the city.

Dating to Medieval times, the street once led to the town gate. Up the street is the Baroque Church of St. Florian, which was built in 1672. This historic street is one of the places to see in Ljubljana that many visitors miss!

#13 St. James Church, Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: St. James Church

Built between 1613 and 1615, the yellow St. James Church sits between the river, Castle Hill and the main road along the southern edge of the city center. The St. Mary’s Column was erected in 1682.

The square in front of the church is another one of the places to see in Ljubljana that was designed by the famous Slovenian architect, Joze Plecnik.

  #14 The Ljubljana Skyscraper

What to see in Ljubljana: View over the city from the Skyscraper

The 13-story building, simply named “Skyscraper” (or Neboticnik in Slovenian), was built in 1933 and is a Ljubljana landmark. When it was completed, it held the titles of ‘Tallest Residential Building in Europe” and “Tallest Building in Yugoslavia.”

Taking the elevator to the top floor, which hosts an outdoor café and viewing deck, is one of the best things to do in Ljubljana. The view over the city’s rooftops to the castle is a sight not-to-be-missed!

Top Tip : Looking for Ljubljana nightlife? After dark, the café turns into a club. It’s one of the fun things to do in Ljubljana at night!

#15 Serbian Orthodox Church Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Serbian Orthodox Church

The St. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church was built in 1936 for the growing Serbian population in Ljubljana. While it is one of the lesser-visited Ljubljana tourist attractions, we think it is stunning.

The interior is absolutely incredible with nearly every inch of space covered in colorful artwork. No photos allowed inside. So, in order to see the interior, you will have to add it to your list of Ljubljana, Slovenia things to do!

#16 US Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia

What to see in Ljubljana: US Embassy

As the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana is naturally home to many Embassies. However, not many rank as Ljubljana top attractions you’d want to visit. The US Embassy, on the other hand, is one of the Ljubljana things to see.

To be fair, the building is probably only interesting to Americans who are accustomed to their embassies being well hidden and often not in the city center. The US Embassy in Ljubljana, however, is located in a chalet that looks warm and welcoming. Yet, the armed guards didn’t invite us in for a cup of coffee.

#17 Tivoli Park, Ljubljana

Ljubljana park Tivoli City Park and Tivoli Castle

Not all Ljubljana top sights are man-made structures – there is nature, too! In fact, the city boasts several nature parks near Ljubljana downtown.

Tivoli Park is the most of popular and a Ljubljana must-do! The expansive area has green lawns, a lake, the National Gallery of Slovenia (which is a museum housed in a mansion) and artwork sprinkled throughout. Tivoli City Park is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana for a breath of fresh air and a full dose of nature!

Ljubljana: city map, main districts and tourist spots

On the map of Ljubljana you will see 17 districts with attractions, nightclubs, stores and hotels. All the most interesting things are in the center, which you can walk around in half an hour. Open the map of Ljubljana and mark all the objects you need to visit.

The question, which districts of the capital are considered the most prestigious, will put locals in a stalemate, because in Ljubljana there is no pronounced division into elite and poor neighborhoods. Each of them has a well-developed social and transportation infrastructure, so you can safely choose any direction on the map of Ljubljana with hotels.

If you want to settle in a quiet place, look at Mosta, Rožna dolina and Trnovo. If you prefer business districts, where life is booming and there are a lot of shopping outlets, you should go to Bezhigrad. Apart from Bezhigrad, tourists also often rent accommodation in Šiška and Vič. Lovers of picturesque places will like Rožnik. If you plan to travel by car or rent a car in the city, please note that the center of Ljubljana is closed to vehicular traffic.

To decide in which area of Ljubljana to stay, mark on the map the most interesting from a tourist point of view zones. According to reviews, they include Bežigrad (a district in the center of Ljubljana), Rožnik, Polje, Trnovo, Shmarna Gora. If you are looking for inexpensive areas of Ljubljana, where it is better for a budget tourist to live, then take a closer look at cozy Moste, sleeping area Šiška and neighborhood Vić.

There is no need to talk about dangerous neighborhoods in Ljubljana - Slovenia has a very low crime rate. A questionable neighborhood to live in is Fužiny, where migrants from poorer countries of the former Yugoslavia (locals call them chefurs) live.

Ljubljana is the green capital of a green country. The area on either side of the river with its picturesque bridges and the central market owes its distinctive appearance to the great architect Jože Plečnik. The city of thousands of events is surrounded by parks and areas of protected nature.

Being in Ljubljana makes me feel like I could believe in fairy tales again.

One day in Ljubljana Itinerary (map & travel tips)

Love it? Share it!

Ljubljana is one of those European destinations where the city doesn’t have a major ‘world famous’ attraction, but it is the little things that makes Ljubljana a special place to visit. And in one day in Ljubljana itinerary you can cover a lot, and on foot!

Ljubljana is the capital city of Slovenia in the Balkans. The city is known as the ‘green city’ (2016) and has one of the largest car-free zones in the European Union.

Ljubljana is not only environmentally friendly, but it offers delightful things that will make any traveler fall in love with the medieval town vibes.  Ljubljana is a compact walking city, full of historic nuances, and presents a unique mix of Central European and the Mediterranean charm.

The quality of life in Slovenia is very good (I mean green city, pretty parks and walking areas – ahh, slow living bliss). Ljubljana in particular encourages the use of locally produced food in hotels and restaurants, and they are DELICIOUS!

Preparing for your visit to Ljubljana

ljubljana tourist map

Before we share our jam packed Ljubljana in a day itinerary, here are some quick tips.

Ljubljana/Slovenia belongs to the European Union, and they follow the Schengen Agreement (for those requiring a visa to Europe). The currency of Slovenia is euros.

Ljubljana is served by Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (Brnik Airport), which is an international airport serving the capital city and it is the largest airport in Slovenia. We flew to Zagreb in Croatia and reached Ljubljana by road.

Zagreb to Ljubljana: 1.45 hours (by car), and 2.50 hours (by train)

Where to stay in Ljubljana : We stayed at the Grand Hotel Union during our trip

Start your morning with traditional Slovenian Food

Hey, welcome to Ljubljana!

Wake up to the smell of delicious coffee, warm Eggs Lorraine, and toast in the heart of Ljubljana. The city centre has a ton of restaurants, and cafes to serve you breakfast and brunch in the morning.

Our favorite for breakfast is Le Petit Cafe . You can try homemade granola with dried fruits and it is served with yogurt or soy milk. Don’t forget to try Slovenian Cream Cake with coffee – the cake is the perfect level of sweetness (like not super sweet, which I like).

Slovenian Cream Cake

I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I love their cream cakes, and I had a lot (like shamelessly a lot!). You can find these delicious Slovenian cream cakes at local bakeries and McDonald’s too (located at the centre).

Walk around Ljubljana old town for the first half of the day

After breakfast, strap on your comfortable walking shoes and get marching. Ljubljana is best explored wandering through the old town centre, admiring the bridges over the Ljubljanica River, checking out the Central Market and the various art nouveau buildings along.

The old town of Ljubljana will bring in memories of pretty medieval cities like those of Vienna and Prague . Although Slovenia was part of erstwhile Yugoslavia and is a part of the Balkans region , the capital city of Ljubljana looks and feels very different from Belgrade or Sarajevo.

Butcher Bridge and river in Ljubljana

Our local tour/friend said, ‘the closer you get to Zagreb, the Austro-Hungarian and Italian influence is more evident, and Slovenia is definitely special in the realm of Balkans history.’

Slovenia was the first country to break away from Yugoslavia, along with Croatia . They declared formal independence on June 25, 1991.

Yugoslavia came into existence after World War I in 1918 with the merger of the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs with the Kingdom of Serbia (with Belgrade as the capital city). Yugoslavia became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929, and before its dissolution, it comprised 6 states.

Soak in the vibes of the Prešernov trg Square

As you walk through the cobblestoned lanes, you will arrive at this beautiful square. Prešernov trg Square is the heart of the historic Ljubljana city. When you stand at the square’s centre, you will be surrounded by many of the recognizable and iconic landmarks of Ljubljana.

Beautiful Prešernov trg Square - Centre

At the central square, you will find the statue of Slovene national poet France Prešeren; and the square is named after him. The statue uniquely faces the window where Prešeren’s “muse” once lived.

On the north side of the square is the grand Baroque-style Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. And then there is the Hauptmann’s House which represents an architectural masterpiece considered to be one of the few buildings in Prešeren Square to have survived the earthquake of 1895.

Heart of Prešernov trg Square

The Prešeren Monument is the centerpiece of Square and it is one of the most notable monuments in Ljubljana. And don’t worry you won’t miss this!

To the south of the Square is the River Ljubljanica, and the famous Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). In the eastern part of Prešeren stands the Central Pharmacy building; to the west, the square is lined by Wolf Street (Wolfova Ulica) bound for Congress Square (Kongresni Trg).

Admire the pinkish-red facade of the Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is a Franciscan church located on the Prešeren Square in Ljubljana. It is hard to miss the church from the square or from across the River.

View of Franciscan Church from Triple Bridge

The Franciscan Monastery along with the Church of the Annunciation is the two buildings that provide a charming character to the Prešernov trg square. The church was built in the 17th century, and the façade was completed around 1700. The church has undergone numerous renovations, especially in the 19th century. And in 1993, the church was adorned with a copper statue of St. Mary, which is Ljubljana’s largest Madonna statue.

It is important to note that until the end of the 18th century, the monastery was the home of Augustine monks. And the pinkish-red color of the facade is symbolic of the Franciscan monastic order.

Cross the Triple Bridge

The Triple Bridge is a group of three bridges built across the Ljubljanica River. The bridge was built in 1929 by Joze Plecnik. It connects the historical and the medieval town of Ljubljana, on one bank, and the modern city, on the other.

Architectural details of the Triple Bridge

The origins of the bridge date back to a wooden bridge in this location from the 13th century. It was called the Old Bridge (Stari Most) and later renamed the Lower Bridge (Spodnji most).

The Lower Bridge was replaced by a new bridge designed and named Franz’s Bridge, (Frančev most) in honor of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria in the mid 19th century. The essentials of the bridge have been preserved until today, and there is an inscription which reads “To Archduke Franz Karl in 1842 by the Town”.

Triple Bridge in Ljubljana

Stop here for a photograph, and admire the Franciscan Church and the square.

Shop/try out local products at the Central Market

When you cross the Triple Bridge, you are at the Central Market , which was also built by Jože Plečnik. Ljubljana’s Central Market is not only a place to shop local produce but historically it served as a meeting place for the community.

Central Market Views

The Market is an open-air shopping market, and there are a series of small food shops along the river Ljubljanica, which are pretty colorful, as you walk through. These are called ‘Plečnik’s Covered Market’.

You must not miss the Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna) here. Every Friday from mid-March until the end of October, Pogačarjev trg square hosts this unique food market/event where chefs of Slovenian restaurants prepare various dishes from all over the world (sort of like our food festivals in North America).

The outdoor markets surrounding the area is also a good place to buy fresh Slovenian fruits and vegetables. They are all locally grown.

Butcher’s Bridge and the sculptures

One of the newer bridges in Ljubljana is the Butchers’ Bridge. This footbridge connects the Ljubljana Central Market and the Petkovšek Embankment (Petkovškovo nabrežje).

This bridge is very unique with sculptures and figures from Ancient Greek and Christian/Jewish mythology, and all of it depicts a story

Locks on Butcher's Bridge Ljubljana

  • There is a sculpture of Adam and Eve, who after being shamed and banned from the Paradise, are seen walking towards Ljubljana Cathedral
  • Then there is the Satyr, startled by the Serpent
  • Prometheus, shown disemboweled, in punishment

As you walk across the Butcher’s Bridge, you will notice the stunning glass floor, and the padlocks on the bridge rails. The entire bridge looks beautiful, and the view of the old town and the river Ljubljanica is super pretty from here.

Pose in front of the Dragon Bridge – Zmajski Most

Another bridge which is located not far from the Central Market is the famous Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most). The statues of the green dragons on the bridge are iconic to the city of Ljubljana, and you must take a photo with the dragon here to remember your trip! It is without a doubt, one of the fairytale bridges in Slovenia.

At the Dragon Bridge Ljubljana

The bridge is located between Kopitar Street and Ressel Street, which can be found to the north of the Ljubljana Central Market. The bridge was built in the early 20th century, and the dragon symbolizes the city and provides protection to Ljubljana.

It is believed that the monster – dragon, was gradually transformed into a symbolic protector of the city – of power, courage, and wisdom.

Explore the buildings around Mestni trg square

Mestni trg square is the major (and old) town square of Ljugbliana. The buildings and structures in and around the Mestni trg square dates back to the 12th century.

It was the centre of the medieval city and was surrounded by important administrative offices and palaces. Take a wander here, and you will find Baroque palaces, Town Hall, and the popular Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers (designed by Venetian born sculptor Francesco Robba).

Baroque architecture gives Ljubljana its unique charm. Many of the city’s churches and buildings were built in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1511, in Baroque style.

Ljubljana’s Town Hall (also known as Mestna hiša, Magistrat, or Rotovž), is the seat of the Municipality of Ljubljana. The town hall building was influenced by Venetian architecture and was built in the late 15th century. The Town Hall features four exhibition spaces: the Glass Atrium, the Historical Atrium, the Central and Right Atriums. Here you can learn about the various projects undertaken by the Municipality.

The Robba Fountain , also located at the square, is modelled on the famous Roman fountains and is considered to be one of Ljubljana’s best known Baroque monuments. It was created in the mid 18th century.

The sculptures of the Fountains reflect the three Carniolan river gods: the Sava, the Ljubljanica, and the Krka. The Fountain’s ground plan is shaped in the form of Ljubljana’s ancient three-leaf town seal.

Visit Ljubljana Cathedral aka St. Nicholas’s Church

The gorgeous Ljubljana Cathedral was built on the site of a Romanic church, which dates back to 1262. When the Ljubljana Diocese was established in 1461, the church underwent various renovations and additions, it also suffered destruction under the Turks.

Old town Ljubljana

From the exterior, the Cathedral looks like any other in Central Europe, but the interiors are very pretty and deserve a visit. There are stunning detailed frescoes, and cream and gold decorations, together with the compact/coziness of the cathedral bring in a calming effect to the visitor. There are ornate choir stalls and angels set up at the altar.

The late Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral to celebrate 1250 years of Slovenian Christianity in 1996.

Break for lunch at Stari Trg Square

From St Nicholas’s Church head towards Stari Trg Square (5-minute walk); this square was the seat of the former medieval part of the city. Here you will find tons of cafes and restaurants to break for lunch and rest your legs.

  • Cafe Romeo ($$) – This cafe is lovely if you are craving pancakes or crepes for brunch. They have outdoor seating areas which are great for summers
  • Landerik ($$) – Stop here for a hearty bowl of salad in the afternoon or any European and Slovenian cuisine. The restaurant interiors are very classy and stunning. (Vegan option available)

Both the restaurants are located just minutes away from the Ljubljana Castle, and the Tourist Information Centre.

Pose in front of ‘LJUBLJANA’ (afternoon one day in Ljubljana itinerary)

Ljubljana Signage near the tourism office

From the Stari trg square, head to the Gornji trg square, which will bring you to the foot of the Castle Hill, where the Ljubljana Castle is located. But before climbing or taking the funicular ride to the castle, we recommend stopping at the Tourist Office and snapping a photo of the Ljubljana City Signage.

The ambience in and around the signage is worth stopping for an Instagrammable shot.

Climb or take the funicular to the Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is a MUST visit for your Ljubljana one day itinerary. This attraction has an entry fee and is completely worth it.  The views from Castle Hill over the city centre of Ljubljana is super stunning.

Views from Ljubljana Castle

The castle stands on a hill, and it was originally a medieval fortress from the 11th and 12th centuries. The way you see the Castle today was formed in the 15th century.

Being a fortress in the early years means that it was used as a defense structure, especially as it occupied a strategic position in the city – for protection and for keeping an eye on the enemies. This castle is depicted on the city’s coat of arms, along with a dragon on top.

Views from Ljubljana Castle tower

We spent about 1-1.50 hours at the Castle complex, and it was not crowded during our visit. You can climb the hill to reach the top, but we took a funicular ride, and explored the towers, took pictures, and then visited various exhibition halls. During our visit, an exhibition on the Yugoslavian history and Slovenia’s origins were on display.

The puppet museum (permanent exhibition) is a must stop by, along with the interactive centre to learn about the castle’s history and its role in shaping Slovenian history.

Puppet Museum Ljubljana Castle

Entrance Ticket information for Ljubljana Castle – One day in Ljubljana Itinerary

Castle ticket is 10 EUR ($13 USD) and it includes entry to the Viewing Tower, Virtual Castle (a short movie about Castle’s history), Slovenian History exhibition, Museum of Puppetry, and Once Upon a Time exhibition.

We bought a combined Castle Ticket with return ride with funicular railway (up & down) + access to exhibitions, museums. Here is a combined ticket with sightseeing in Ljubljana.

  National Gallery of Slovenia

Entrance of National Gallery of Slovenia

The National Gallery of Slovenia is the prime museum of historical art in the country. It holds the largest collection of fine art (from the High Middle Ages to the 20th century), including a  permanent exhibition of works by Zoran Mušič, who was one of Europe’s leading modernist painters.

The permanent collection at the gallery consists of various historical periods with over 600 displays of Slovenian and European art. There is an entry fee for the gallery, which is 10 euros ($12 USD).

Check out the art nouveau buildings

If you don’t wish to spend time and money at an art museum, keep your eyes peeled for various art nouveau buildings and landmarks in the city of Ljubljana. This style of architecture came into existence at the turn of the 20th century, and the influence of the Viennese Secession is clearly visible.

Vurnik House or the Cooperative Business Bank

  • The Dragon Bridge is one of the earliest examples of an art nouveau structure in the city. It is important to note that the rise of art nouveau buildings was encouraged and mostly designed by local artists.
  • Vurnik House or the Cooperative Business Bank building is one of the unique art nouveau buildings. This house was located near our hotel – Grand Hotel Union , in the Miklošičeva Ulica street.
  • Right next to it, the People’s Loan Bank (the one with Zadružna Zveza sign on it) in a white façade with blue metal details. You can start at the Miklošičeva Ulica street, which is also the Art Nouveau Quarter, and then make your way to the Prešeren Square.
  • Prešeren Square is home to the Hauptmann House , which is another art nouveau building, and it will remind you of the Flatiron in NYC.

Late afternoon stop by the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church also known as the Orthodox Church is an Eastern Orthodox church building located in Trubar Park. You can find it between Bleiweis Street and Prešeren Street, north of the Museum of Modern Art and west of the National Gallery of Slovenia.

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church

Make a quick stop here, as you make your way to the Tivoli City Park from the National Gallery of Slovenia.

The church was built in Serbo-Byzantine Revival style, and amidst the greenery, it looks beautiful with its five domes on top. It was built in the early 20th century by Ivan Bricelj, and the interior frescoes were painted by various Serbian painters.

Tivoli City Park (Mestni park Tivoli) or Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli)

We enjoyed a nice stroll at the Tivoli City Park in the evening.

Walk at the Ljubljana Tivoli City Park

Tivoli Park is Ljubljana’s largest park. It is located on the western outskirts of the Center District. It was designed in 1813 by the French engineer Jean Blanchard and was created by joining together the parks which had surrounded Podturn and Cekin Mansions.

This beautiful park covers an area of approximately five square kilometres, with manicured ornamental flower beds, unique trees, and numerous statues and fountains.

Tivoli Park’s scenic Jakopič Promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče) is home to art/photo exhibitions. It was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik and is open throughout the year.

Tivoli Park's scenic Jakopič Promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče) is home to art/photo exhibitions. It was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik and is open throughout the year.

The park area blends beautifully into the slopes of the Rožnik hill, and you can take a stroll by embarking on various walking paths.

End the sightseeing with drinks at The Nebotičnik Cafe

Finish your one day in Ljubljana itinerary with drinks at The Nebotičnik Cafe. This cafe is located on the top of the Nebotičnik (Skyscraper) building.

All day long we explored medieval and art nouveau landmarks of the city of Ljubljana, the Skyscraper brings in the architecture created between the two World Wars and one with beautiful city views from all directions.

The Skyscraper was built in 1933 and was the tallest building in the Balkans at the time of its construction. The sky rise building still serves its original purpose and houses shops, restaurants, offices, and residential flats.

Next to the Skyscraper, you will find Ljubljana’s first modern shopping arcade – project, which was later abandoned and never materialized.

Dinner at the Petkovšek Embankment

ljubljana tourist map

For dinner, head back to the Prešernov trg Square. In the late evening, the square, and the banks along the Ljubljanica River are stunning, and it comes alive with lights, and music.

We decided to relax at a cafe bar in the lively Petkovšek Embankment area (by the river). With a meat and cheese platter, and sprinkling wine we called it a day, in the stunning city of Ljubljana.

Sightseeing Map: Ljubljana in a day

You can use this map for a self guided walking tour of Ljubljana. It starts at the Grand Union Hotel, where we stayed at.

Is one day in Ljubljana enough?

We stayed in Ljubljana for 3 days, but definitely covered all of the old town highlights in one day. The rest of the time we embarked on day trips from the capital city. Being a compact city, you can definitely cover the major attractions in one day.

Also, note that many of these attractions do not have any entrance fee and can be visited for free, like the bridges, Tivoli Park, cathedrals, etc.

If you are staying in Ljublaja more than a day, we recommend adding these destinations to your Slovenia itinerary

  • Lake bled – Take a day trip to Lake Bled from Ljubljana. There are many tour operators offering this trip. You can also use public transportation to reach there. In a day, you can explore the Bled Castle and the stunning lake. You can book your tour here
  • Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle – Another option is to visit the largest caves in Europe from Ljubljana – Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle. This tour is only for 5 hours and it takes on a unique historical and geographical tour.

Travel Tips for Ljubljana Slovenia

Here are some quick tips to prepare for your trip to Ljubljana Slovenia.

Central Market Ljubljana Views from the embarkment

Travel documents

Slovenia is located in the Balkans region and is bordered by Austria , Croatia , Hungary , and Italy. It is completely landlocked.

It is part of the European Union, and follows the Schengen Agreement. So if you require a visa to travel to Europe in the Schengen zone, then you will need a visa for visiting Slovenia as well. The same applies for its neighboring countries.

As always don’t forget travel insurance to Europe.

Budgeting for one day in Ljubljana itinerary

Although not a budget destination like many of the Balkans destinations, you can save a ton in Ljubljana by eating local, booking your accommodation, transportation and flights in advance.

Sightseeing costs can be zero if you don’t visit museums or the castle interiors. There is also a free walking tour that covers the city center highlights in a few hours.

Other than that budget for the following,

  • Hotel/Airbnb : $80 USD (twin occupancy, mid range near the city center)
  • Food : As low as $25 USD (3 meals at fast food chains, local bakeries. If you eat at a nice cafe, or restaurant the prices are higher – like the ones mentioned in this post)

Best time to visit Ljubljana

We prefer visiting Europe in the shoulder months, and Ljubljana is also best explored during this time. The best time to visit Ljubljana is from April to May or from September to October. These spring and fall months are great as the compact city is not super crowded, and accommodation prices are decent too.

Packing for Ljubljana Slovenia

Ljublaja experiences 4 seasons. It’s coldest month is January (like in many other European cities). Here average high-temperature is 3.4°C (38.1°F) and an average low-temperature of -2.5°C (27.5°F) in the winters.

  • Winters: Take woolen clothing, like parka, warm boots, scarf, gloves, cardigans

July is the hottest month in Ljubljana with an average temperature of 19.5°C (67°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 10 in July. The wettest month is October.

  • Summer : Ljubljana has warm weather in the months from June to August, and during this time you can wear cotton clothing – linen pants, cotton tops, flowy dresses.
  • Fall/Spring : In the fall and early spring months, expect temperatures to drop in the evenings, so do pack a warm cardigan and an insulated waterproof jacket. Rain and/or overcast days are common during the fall months.

Because there is a ton of walking in the city, do remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. Here is what I wore in Ljubljana.

Must eat/drink/buy from Ljubljana Slovenia

Here are some of the must eats in the capital city of Ljubljana

  • Slovenian Cream Cake/Kremsnita : Sweet cake, puff pastry made of eggs, cream and milk
  • Štruklji : Slovene dish, made of dough and filling of choice
  • Also try their wines, meat and cheese platters

You can try Slovene culinary delights by taking a walking food tour . If you are in town, during the Open Market season (culinary event at the Central Market), do try out various dishes prepared by some of the finest chefs in the country.

You will surely find a ton of local produce, dishes to taste in these traditional markets – Ljubljana lives by the principle ‘from local field, to local table, to the guest’ , in the best way possible.

A green city, and a destination that is open and friendly towards visitors, from its architectural heritage to culinary delights, Ljubljana will not disappoint you!

We hope you found our one day in Ljubljana itinerary useful in planning your trip!

Why Go To Ljubljana

Slovenia's capital appeals to vacationers seeking a historical, scenic getaway that doesn't break the bank. Located about halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps, Ljubljana offers a postcard-worthy setting filled with charming architecture, expansive green spaces and bike- and pedestrian-friendly streets. The picturesque Ljubljanica river weaves its way through the Ljubljana Old Town  area, where the bulk of the city's can't-miss attractions – which are all free to visit – reside. You can cross the river via stunning bridges like the Dragon Bridge and the Triple Bridge , one of several Ljubljana sights created by Slovenian architect Jože Plecnik. Other old-world locales, such as Ljubljana Cathedral and Prešeren Square , are a short stroll away from the river's banks.

On warmer days, enjoy a picnic by the river or nearby Lake Bled , on Ljubljana Castle 's grounds or in lush Tivoli Park . After a busy day of sightseeing, head to a Slovenian restaurant to savor traditional comfort classics like Idrijski žlikrofi (a potato-, onion-, bacon- and spice-filled pasta served with a meat sauce) or Kranjska klobasa (a sausage similar to what you'd find in Kraków, Poland ). Or, make your way to Metelkova mesto for cool art and a superb nightlife scene.

Ljubljana Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Ljubljana is from April to May or from September to October. These spring and fall months offer comfortable (albeit occasionally cool) weather for sightseeing, plus lower hotel prices than the peak summer season and the busy winter holidays. June, July and August – Ljubljana's summer months – boast warmer temperatures (think: mid- to high 70s during the day) that attract hordes of tourists, causing accommodation rates to increase and crowds at top attractions to swell. Meanwhile, November through March (or late fall through early spring) sees lower prices at hotels (except around Christmas and New Year's), but daytime temps rarely climb out of the 30s and 40s.

Weather in Ljubljana

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • It's pronounced two ways Though you may be tempted to say Ljubljana exactly as it's spelled, the "j's" are always silent. The official way to pronounce the city's name is lyoo-BLYAH-nuh, but you'll also hear the slang version loo-BLAH-nuh frequently used by locals.
  • It's budget-friendly In addition to offering complimentary transportation within the Ljubljana Old Town neighborhood, Ljubljana boasts cost-effective accommodations, a plethora of free attractions and affordable cuisine, all of which help keep vacation costs low.
  • It's a foodie city Slovenian fare may not be as well-known as other European cuisines, but it is widely celebrated in Ljubljana. Expect dishes with Italian, German and Eastern European influences and ingredients sourced from local farms. Don't miss Open Kitchen ("Odprta kuhna"), a popular food market in Pogacarjev Square that takes place every Friday from mid-March to October.
  • It's filled with stunning architecture Gothic, art nouveau and Baroque landmarks are everywhere you turn in Ljubljana. Many of the city's most highly regarded bridges and buildings, including the Triple Bridge and the covered market buildings lining the Ljubljanica river, were designed by Slovenian architect Jože Plecnik.

How to Save Money in Ljubljana

  • Stick to free attractions All of Ljubljana's must-see sights, including Prešeren Square and the Dragon Bridge , are free to visit. Plan to spend the bulk of your time exploring these budget-friendly locales.
  • Pass on taxis Most of the city's top tourist attractions sit in the downtown area, making it easy to get from point A to point B on foot or by bike – which you can borrow or rent from select hotels  or hire via Ljubljana's affordable BicikeLJ bicycle-sharing system – during the warmer months. Complimentary electric shuttles called Kavalirs are also available year-round.
  • Buy a Ljubljana Card If you plan on touring Ljubljana Castle and visiting fee-based attractions like the Museum of Illusions Ljubljana, consider purchasing a Ljubljana Card . The pass covers admissions to more than 20 sights, plus a walking tour, a scenic boat cruise and use of city buses (for 24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the card chosen). Passes start at 31 euros (about $35) each, but you'll save 10 percent should you choose to buy your card online.

Culture & Customs

Although the name "Ljubljana" wasn't officially used until 1220, the land that comprises the present-day city was first settled by the Veneti (an early group of people from northeastern Italy) around 1000 B.C. Throughout its history, the area was occupied by multiple ethnic groups – including the Taurisci (a Celtic tribe), the Romans and the Huns – before it became part of Yugoslavia after World War I. Once World War II ended, Slovenia and five other republics formed, with Ljubljana becoming Slovenia's capital. Locals voted for independence on Dec. 23, 1990, which was officially declared on June 25, 1991.

Ljubljana is known for its stunning mix of architecture, which can partly be attributed to its turbulent history. Following the sack of Emona (the Roman city preceding Ljubljana) by the Huns, much of the region's original Roman structures were destroyed.  Ljubljana Castle and other Gothic buildings were constructed in their place during the Middle Ages. Most medieval structures (think: Ljubljana Cathedral ) were replaced by or repurposed to become Baroque buildings following the earthquake of 1511. In the early 20th century, ornamental art nouveau structures like the Dragon Bridge were built. And between World War I and World War II, Slovenian architect Jože Plecnik transformed the city by adding numerous structures inspired by ancient Athens, Greece , such as the Triple Bridge .

Gorgeous architecture is on display throughout the Ljubljana Old Town area, but travelers who want a true taste of the city's artsy side should visit Metelkova mesto . This avant-garde neighborhood is composed of many buildings featuring artwork by both highly regarded and lesser-known Slovenian artists.

Slovenia's official language is Slovenian, though Hungarian and Italian are also nationally recognized as main languages. Slovenians pride themselves on speaking multiple languages, with more than half able to speak English conversationally. As a result, travelers can get by using English while visiting Ljubljana. Those who want to try speaking Slovenian should remember key words and phrases like "zdravo" (hello), "Ali govorite angleško?" (Do you speak English?), "hvala" (thank you) and "zbogom" (goodbye).

As is the case in other European cities, tipping is not expected in Ljubljana. However, it is customary to round up your bill or leave a 10 percent tip at restaurants when you feel you've received exceptional service. Because Slovenia is part of the European Union, its official currency is the euro. One euro equals about $1.13, but you'll want to check the latest exchange rate before you visit. Credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are available throughout the city.

What to Eat

Sharing borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia offers dishes that blend fresh, local ingredients with Italian, German and Eastern European flavors. Regional, savory specialties include Kranjska klobasa (or Carniolan sausage, a sausage similar to Polish kielbasa) and Idrijski žlikrofi (pasta filled with potato, onion, bacon and spices, and served with a meat sauce). For dessert or a sweet treat, try potica (a yeast cake with a tarragon, poppy seed or walnut filling) or Prekmurska gibanica (a moist cake with alternating layers of apple, walnut, poppy seed and cottage cheese).

If you want a libation to accompany your meal, sip one of 52 kinds of vino from Slovenian's wine regions: Primorje, Podravje and Posavje. Or, go for a homemade brew from one of Ljubljana's craft breweries . For something stronger, try zganje (schnapps). Local versions feature flavors like blueberry, plum, juniper, honey or pear.

Traditional dishes and a selection of local wines, beers and spirits are on the menus at traveler-approved eateries like Gostilna Na Gradu and Hiša Pod Gradom , as well as Gostilna Slovenija-designated restaurants – 43 local dining establishments deemed authentic by the Slovenian government. Kranjska klobasa and other handheld Slovenian staples are also available at Ljubljana's Central Market  and Open Kitchen ("Odprta kuhna"), an open-air food market that occurs every Friday from mid-March to October. Additionally, popular dining venues, such as Restavracija Strelec and Monstera bistro , serve Slovenian fare with a contemporary twist. Ljubljana is also home to a few casual, internationally inspired eateries, including highly regarded locales like Zbornica (an American bar and grill), Fari's Delice (a Middle Eastern spot with vegan options) and Pizzeria Trta (with pizzas, pastas and more).

Overall, Slovenia is a safe country to visit. However, its geographic location means travelers should stay up to date on the news during their stays, since terrorist attacks occasionally occur in Europe. Strikes and protests can also turn violent at times, so it's best to avoid public demonstrations (which primarily take place at Congress Square or outside of government buildings). Some travelers also caution that Metelkova mesto can feel unsafe at night.

Although the country has low crime levels, petty crimes like purse snatching, pickpocketing, vehicle break-ins and bike theft are common in tourist areas. To avoid falling victim to these crimes, safeguard your belongings and lock your car or bicycle. For more information about how to stay safe while visiting Slovenia, check out the U.S. State Department's website . And to receive security messages during your vacation, sign up for the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program .

Getting Around Ljubljana

The best way to get around Ljubljana is to walk, bike or use Kavalirs. All three options are either free or affordable modes of transportation, though walking or biking may not be the most comfortable way to get from one place to another during the chilly winter months. Ljubljana also offers a tourist train and a reliable bus system, but because all of the city's top attractions are situated downtown, paying more to navigate the area by train or bus isn't necessary. Taxis are available as well; however, rates are pricey. Hiring a car is not recommended due to Ljubljana's abundance of cost-effective transportation options. Travelers who want to venture outside the city to Lake Bled can drive or sign up for a fee-based bus tour from Ljubljana.

To get to Ljubljana, visitors can fly into Ljubljana Jože Pucnik Airport (LJU), which sits about 15 miles north of the city center. Rental cars and taxis are readily available at the airport, or travelers can take an Avtobusna Postaja Ljubljana bus from the airport to central Ljubljana.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Slovenia's participation in the Schengen Agreement means American tourists can visit the country without a visa as long as their stays last less than 90 days. A passport with three or more months of validity beyond the travel dates is required, though the U.S. State Department recommends those who plan on traveling to other European countries have a passport that's valid for at least six months. Upon arrival in Slovenia, visitors must show proof of a return flight and sufficient funds. Americans who are not staying at a hotel or a company-owned apartment and will be visiting for more than three days will need to also register at a local police station within 72 hours of arrival. Learn more about Slovenia's entry and exit requirements by visiting the U.S. State Department's website .

For incredible views of the Ljubljana Old Town area, head to Castle Hill – where you'll find Ljubljana Castle .

Visit the city with a green soul

Numerous visitors describe Ljubljana as a hidden gem of Europe. Its picturesque image has been marked by different historical periods , and mostly by the opus of the world-famous architect, Jože Plečnik.

Being a city with a green soul and a high level of environmental awareness , Ljubljana has managed to preserve its green character to the present day. It boasts excellently preserved green spaces and nature even in the heart of the city centre.

The symbol of Ljubljana is the dragon , which dominates the iconic Dragon Bridge , and the city's most prominent attraction Ljubljana Castle , whose Outlook Tower offers some of the most beautiful views of the city.

The soul of the city is the Ljubljanica River , crossed by picturesque bridges. Nowadays, the banks of the Ljubljanica are picturesque promenades, which are also meeting and socialising points. All of the bridges spanning the river are interesting architecturally. They join people symbolically and literally, and street artists also find inspiration there, making the city even livelier and more attractive.

The pulse of the city is lively and  creative, with numerous events and festivals. Positioned on the crossroads of different great culinary traditions, Ljubljana is also a foodie heaven , with local chefs really making an impact in the last few years.

Ljubljana Tourism is the official destination marketing organisation for our city. It was established by the Municipality of Ljubljana in 2001. Ljubljana Tourism is in charge of the city's tourist Information centres, tourist guide services and the Ljubljana Convention Bureau.
