What Pets Are Allowed into Thailand?

Thailand permits the importation of most domestic pets, with the exception of pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers.

If you plan to bring rabbits, they will need to meet the same requirements as dogs and cats, while birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, and rodents may have to fulfill different criteria.

For owners of unique pets like turtles or parrots, it is important to verify if they are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). If they are protected, additional permits will be required, and you must apply for them accordingly.

Does My Dog (or other pet) Need a Rabies Vaccine & Titer Test?

For pets entering Thailand from any country, there is no requirement for a rabies titer test (FAVN).

However, your pet will need a rabies vaccine.

First, it is necessary to have your pet microchipped for easy identification. Thailand recognizes AVID 9 and AVID 10 microchips, as well as ISO Standard 11784 or ISO Standard 11785 microchips. Make sure your pet is microchipped with one of these approved options.

Once your pet is microchipped , it needs to be administered with an inactivated rabies vaccine.

You must be able to provide the original rabies certificate on arrival, and this certificate must state the microchip number, the date of inoculation and how long the vaccine lasts.

What Other Vaccines Does My Pet Need for Thailand?

Dogs must also be vaccinated against canine distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis (DHLPP) while cats must be inoculated against feline cat flu-feline calicivirus, feline viral rhinotracheitis, chlamydia psittaci, and feline parvovirus.

Your pet must have had all the necessary vaccines at least 21 days before arriving in Thailand, but no more than a year before.

Puppies and kittens will need to be vaccinated when they are at least three months old and will need to wait for 30 days after their inoculations before they can enter the country. This means that the minimum age for export is four months old.

Does My Pet Need to Be Treated for Parasites?

Dogs and cats must receive appropriate treatment for both internal and external parasites. This includes administering medication to address ticks and fleas, as well as treating against internal parasites such as tapeworms and heartworms.

You should consult with your veterinarian to obtain the necessary parasite treatment medication approximately seven days prior to your scheduled flight.

Do I Need a Health Certificate?

You must provide an animal health certificate (form 7001) that has been approved by both your veterinarian and an authorized government official from the country of export.

The health certificate should explicitly state that your pet dog or cat is in good health and capable of traveling. Additionally, the certificate must include vaccination records, identification details, and information about ownership.

Please note that the health certificate is only valid for ten days from the date of issuance. Therefore, it is crucial that you arrive in Thailand with your pet within ten days after the certificate has been endorsed.

Do I Need an Import Permit?

Prior to traveling to Thailand, it is necessary for pets to obtain an Import Permit from the Department of Livestock Development. The Import Permit remains valid for a period of 60 days, providing sufficient time for travel arrangements.

To apply for the permit, you can download the application form directly from the department's website.

What Happens When We Arrive?

  • Upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (or other international airports), you will undergo immigration checks and retrieve your baggage and pet.
  • You will then proceed to the Airport Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) with your pet and necessary documents (listed above).
  • At the “Goods to Declare” channel, you will present the import permit and your pet to Customs officers.

Will My Pet Need a Travel Crate?

When traveling internationally, it is mandatory for pet dogs and cats to be transported in travel crates that meet the standards set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

These crates should provide sufficient space for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It is crucial that the crates are designed to prevent the nose and paws of your pet from protruding, minimizing the risk of accidental injuries.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, it is recommended to obtain the appropriate crates well in advance of your departure date and gradually acclimate your pet to spending extended periods of time in the carrier through crate training.

Where Will My Pet Pee/Poop?

On short haul flights an airline is likely to be more accommodating and allow a small dog to stay in the cabin, within their carrier. In this case the dog may be allowed to pee on a puppy pad in the lavatory.

However, due to airline regulations, most pets are transported in the cargo area of the plane. They are, of course, not permitted to roam freely in the cargo space. Therefore, the carrier becomes the only designated area where your pet can relieve itself during the flight.

You should ensure that your pet's carrier contains material that is able to soak up wee, or contain a poo. An adult dog can hold a wee for 4-6 hours, and most will try to hold it for longer when flying. However, long haul flights are problematic for senior dogs, as they have weaker bladders. Other aspects of flying may also cause distress.

It is advisable to reduce food intake before travel, but makes sure your pet is sufficiently hydrated for the journey. Discuss the best course of action with your vet.

Will My Pet Be Subject to Quarantine?

Pets meeting all import requirements and showing no signs of illness will be exempt from quarantine upon their arrival in Thailand. However, the decision to detain or quarantine pets for inspection or additional tests rests with the discretion of the quarantine officer.

If deemed necessary, these pets may be subjected to quarantine for a maximum period of 30 days at an approved quarantine center. It's important to note that the expenses for tests and quarantine will be the responsibility of the pet owner.

Traveling with pets in Thailand: options and considerations

If you are an animal lover, and you can’t be separated from your pets – then your ideal vacation would be with your pets. In our previous article, we talked about the process of bringing pets into Thailand . Now, we will be focusing on the process of traveling with pets in Thailand once your pets have arrived there.

Table of Contents

Traveling with pets in thailand.

Domestic travel within Thailand are mostly done via air and land transport.

Are domestic flights pet friendly?

At the time of our research, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Nok Air provide pet flight service. While you would generally hear about “Pet in Cabin” and “Pets as Checked Baggage”, most airlines in Thailand now only offer Pets as Checked Baggage service. This means you have to check-in your pets to a special area right under the passenger cabin,

In general, Airlines recommend that you get in touch with their service center as there are many limitations including pet breed, container condition, maximum number of pet / flight, and aircraft type.

We have consolidated pet policy pages from the 3 airlines here: Thai Airways , Bangkok Airways , Nok Air

Travel by land options

In our opinion, if you are already in Thailand, the most convenient way to travel with a pet is to drive or hire private transportation. However, keep in mind the travel distance. For example, a drive from Bangkok to Chiang Mai would take 6-7 hours, Pattaya or Hua Hin would be more suitable for a road-trip from Bangkok.

If you or your local thai friends already own a car then the process is simple, however if you don’t – there are a few options. First, you can get in touch with a pet relocation specialist. Pet town , for example, also provide pet taxi service on top of their pet relocation service. Another option is to rent a car. There are a vast number of car rental / car with a driver service providers in Thailand. Some of them would also allow pets in exchange for higher fees. AVIS is among the most international (but also very expensive) one which we have tried during our business trip. We did not have a pet with us back then but feel free to get in touch with the company for inquiry.

If you want to go for a cheaper/local alternative, make sure to do your research on provider’s credentials, pricing or go with providers that transparently list out pricing on their website. While we have not personally tried this provider, a desktop research shows that  Okay Travel  lists out pricing by destination, and also mentions pet transportation as their service.

Train is another land travel options, however Thailand train infrastructure is not well developed like in Europe or Japan/Taiwan. Pets are also restricted to lower fare cabin, which you may find it uncomfortable.

Pet-friendly hotels and resorts in Thailand

Being a tourism destination, Thailand has a large number of hotels and resorts. However not all hotels are pet-friendly, and even fewer have clear pet policies that you can easily check online.

Below are some of the hotels and resorts that have transparent pet policies. However, you are encouraged to still get in touch with these hotels ahead of your booking for full details. Lastly, if you are looking for more alternatives, feel free to check websites like Tripadvisor which has a longer list of pet-friendly accommodation.

Pet-friendly hotels in Thailand: t here are a number of hotels in Bangkok that would allow you to stay with your pet

  • Le Meridien Bangkok : 1 pet under 7kg per room
  • Capella Hotel : Allow one dog under 10kg
  • Kimpton Maa-lai : Flexible and not limiting to stay with common pets like dogs or cats (but no poisonous animal)
  • Grand Mercure Bangkok Asoke Residence : Allow 1 dog or cat
  • Oakwood Residence : 1 dog or cat per room (under 16 kg)

Pet-friendly resorts in Thailand:

  • Anatasila Villa Hua Hin : up to 2 dogs per room
  • Rosewood Phuket : Allow up to 1 dog under 10kg per Villa/2-Bedroom
  • Hyatt Regency Hua Hin : 1 dog or cat under 10kg per room
  • Novotel Huahin : Allow cats and dogs under 10 kg

Pet-friendly condos for rent Thailand

Traveling with pets in Thailand_cat

If you are looking to have a longer stay in Thailand then purchasing or long-term rental would be your options.

If you are living outside of Bangkok or in other cities, your best bet would be to check out detached landed property or townhouse since they provide more space for your pets. However, if you are looking to stay in Bangkok, it does get more tricky as majority of condominiums would not allow you to keep pets.

Here are some of the condominiums in Bangkok that are pet friendly:

  • M Thonglor, M Phayathai and M Jatujak
  • Ashton Sukhumvit and Ashton Morph
  • Maru Ladprao and Maru Ekkamai
  • Metris Ladprao and Metris Pattanakarn
  • MAESTRO Siam-Ratchathewi and MAESTRO Ratchada
  • The Monument Thonglor
  • Waterford Sukhumvit

For shorter term stay like 1-3 month(s), the easiest way to find accommodation would be to check for Airbnb within condominiums that are officially pet-friendly (like those listed above).

So, is it easy traveling with pets in Thailand?

Traveling with pets in Thailand requires a lot of preparation, so maybe it’s not worth it for a weekend get-away. Being on the road for a very long time can be stressful for the pets too.

However, if you and your pets are inseparable or you are planning on a long-trip away from home. There are logistics and accommodation options that would allow you to enjoy holiday with your pets.

Thailand Pet Passport & Import Regulations

There will be no quarantine imposed on your pet when entering Thailand as long as the following requirements are met. Unless otherwise stated, the regulations below apply to domestic dogs and cats only. Owners of other pets should refer to item 13.

Pet Microchip

pet microchip

Thailand's pet import regulations require that your dog or cat be microchipped with an ISO 11784 pet microchip that is a 15 digit and non-encrypted for all animals entering or transiting Thailand. If your pet's microchip is not ISO compliant, then you can carry a microchip scanner.

Vaccinations

vaccinations

Unless your pet is located in a country that has not had any rabies incidents in the past 12 months, a vaccination card/certificate is required for each pet, clearly displaying your pet's current rabies vaccination, including the vaccine's manufacturer, batch number and expiration. The rabies vaccination must have been administered between 21 days prior to arrival in Thailand and not more than 12 months prior to arrival.

Additionally, your dog must have been vaccinated against Leptospirosis not less than 21 days prior to travel. If not vaccinated, your dog should be tested for Leptospirosis with negative result during the 30 (thirty) days prior to the departure. All pets must be vaccinated against other significant infectious or contageous diseases (Distemper, Hepatitus, and Parvovirus) with an approved vaccine at least 21 days prior to departure from the originating country. Cats must be vaccinated against Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV).

Pet Travel Transport can help get your pet there safely.

Blood Titer Test

Blood Titer Test

Thailand does not require a rabies titer test (FAVN) for pets entering from any country.

airine pet policies

Pet Health Certificate

The pet health certificate for Thailand must be completed in English and stamped (endorsed) by the government of the exporting country responsible for the import and export of animals.

A copy of your passport must accompany your pet.

Internal and External Parasites

It is recommended that, before your dog or cat can enter Thailand, it should be treated against internal and external parasites (ticks and tapeworms).

You must obtain an Import Permit from the Department of Livestock Development in advance of your pet's arrival. The license is valid for 60 days.

Any live animal transiting Bangkok will need an import permit.

Post Import Procedures

Pets may be subject to up to 30 days of quarantine upon entering Thailand for tests at the quarantine center upon arrival. Should all inspections and tests have acceptable results, your pet will be released to you.

Entering Thailand by Air

airplane

Pets can arrive in Thailand in the cabin or as checked baggage or air cargo at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. Advance notification should be given to the Animal Quarantine Station. Pets can also enter Thailand at Phuket, although an import permit is required and arrangements must be made with veterinary officials for clearance.

Your pet is not permitted exposure to other animals if they are transiting at any approved intermediate port or airport. They shall not be allowed to leave the precinct of the port except to an officially approved transit quarantine area.

At check-in, you will present the following documents for the issuance of an import license: a photocopy of pet owner's passport, an original pet vaccination record (and a pet passport, if any), an original official health certificate and a photocopy of printed import permit.

Pet dogs and cats will not be quarantined as long as they arrive with a current import permit and all regulations to enter Thailand are met. However, a quarantine officer has the discretionary authority to detain any pets/animals in a quarantine station for a period of at least 30 days upon arrival during which they shall be submitted to tests and/or treatments deemed necessary. The pet owner would assume this expense.

Pets transiting Thailand as air cargo will need a transit permit which must be applied for via an import permit application.

Puppies and Kittens

Puppy or kitten import to Thailand

Thailand requires that puppies and kittens are vaccinated no sooner than 3 months and wait for 30 days prior to entering the country.

  • Traveling with a puppy

Banned Breeds

Banned Dogs in Thailand

Thailand does not publish a list of banned dog breeds; however, all Pit Bull breeds must be spayed or neutered. It is suggested that you use the services of a local agent to customs clear Pit Bull breeds and their mixes.

Exporting PetsLiving in Thailand

Cats and dogs cannot be exported until they have been microchipped and vaccinated for rabies and wait 30 days. Puppies and kittens must not be vaccinated for rabies until they reach 3 months of age, so the minimum age for export is 4 months of age. Your pet must also have a health certificate, export permit (when applicable).

All pets to be exported must be inspected 48 hours before departure at the Airport before the Export License is granted. The export License and Health Certificate shall be issued and collected after the inspection and a copy will be sent to the owner before departure.

Other Animals

rabbits turtles other animals

Rabbits are subject to the same requirements as listed above. Birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibia, mammals such as rodents are not subject to requirements of rabies vaccination, but may have to meet other requirements and should have a health certificate to enter Thailand. Pet owners are strongly advised to seek further information from the relevant authority of their country and/or that of the country of destination.

CITES endangered turtle

If your pet is not a dog, cat or ferret, and especially if it is a turtle or parrot, you should verify that it is not protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).  You will need to apply for additional permits if this is the case. Over 180 countries participate and enforce CITES regulations.

Requirements and Regulations for Bringing Pets to Thailand

Attention: This information will be used as general guidelines and may not be updated to meet the current requirements for pet travel to Thailand. Before you import a pet to Thailand, contact the appropriate authorities for your destination country. This will ensure you understand the latest Thailand pet import rules so your trip goes smoothly.

Pets entering Thailand must be microchipped for identification purposes. The microchip should comply with ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO Standard 11785. Thailand accepts AVID 9 and AVID 10 in addition to ISO standard microchips.

A microchip is an important safety precaution when you import a dog to Thailand. Not only does it serve as identification, but it can help your pet in case they become lost in their new home.

Rabies Vaccination and Certificate

Ensure your pet has an original Rabies Certificate. The certificate must include the microchip number, date of inoculation, and validity period. This inactivated vaccine must be administered after microchipping your pet.

Vet Health Certificate (Form 7001)

A USDA-accredited veterinarian must issue a health certificate within 10 days of your pet's flight. A pet transport service to Thailand can help you understand if your vet is USDA-accredited and help you find the right accreditation before your trip.

Import Permit

Apply for an import permit from the Bangkok Animal Quarantine Station. This Thailand pet import permit is valid for 45 days from the issue date. It’s important to time your pet's travel to Thailand within this timeframe.

USDA Endorsements

The following must be sent to your local USDA for their stamp of approval prior to moving to Thailand with pets.

  • Microchip Implantation Record
  • Rabies Certificate
  • Vet Health Certificate
  • Current Vaccination Records

Additional Vaccines for Dogs: Canine Distemper, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, and Hepatitis (DHLPP).

Additional Vaccines for Cats: Feline Cat Flu-Feline Calicivirus, Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Chlamydia Psittaci, Cat Enteritis-Feline Panleukopaenia/Feline Parvovirus.

These vaccines must be no less than 21 days old at the time of arrival in Thailand and no more than one year old. Vaccines play an important role in your pet’s health before, during, and after they travel. They not only ensure your pet remains healthy during a move but also work to protect local pets and wildlife from diseases.

What’s the process?

The steps below must be followed in detail in order for your pet to enter Thailand. We recommend discussing the requirements and options in detail with a pet relocation company

Import Permit

To be applied for shortly prior to export

  • All pets entering Thailand will need an import permit, which should be applied for once the health requirements have been met. The application is usually processed within 1-3 days.
  • Pets must be at least 4 months of age to enter.

Health Requirements

Must be completed at least 21 days before departure

Health requirement

Must be completed before departure

  • Dogs, cats, and ferrets must be identified by microchip.  There are no exceptions to this rule.
  • If your pet does not have an ISO complaint chip, your pet will have to travel with a microchip reader attached to the crate. Alternatively, your vet can implant a new ISO complaint chip in addition to the existing non-ISO compatible chip.

Vaccinations

Must be completed at least 21 days prior to departure

  • Rabies vaccinations valid for 1 year (cats and dogs).
  • Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Parvovirus (DHLP). The leptospirosis must be administered by the manufacturer’s recommendations.  If not, your pet will need to be tested for leptospirosis within 30 days of travel.
  • Cats: Feline Panleukopenia.

Import Health Certificate

Must be completed within 10 days before departure.

Health Certificate

Must be completed within 10 days before departure

  • At this point in your move, one of our pet shipping specialists will pre-complete the correct health certificate and email it to you veterinarian for signature at the physical appointment. We provide all documents and are available to answer any questions and trouble shoot issues that may rise.
  • The health certificate must be completed within 10 days of export.

USDA Endorsement

  • After your pet has been examined by your veterinarian and the correct health certificate has been completed and signed, the health certificate must be submitted to the USDA office to be endorsed.  FFexpress coordinates this process on your behalf.
  • If a military veterinarian completes your pet’s health certificate, the USDA endorsement is not needed. A military veterinarian is a Veterinary Corps Officer or civilian GS-0701 series government veterinarian employed by the U.S Army Veterinary Service.

Banned Breeds

Thailand does not publish a list of banned breeds.

All Pitbull breed must be spayed or neutered before entry.

14 best travel carriers for dogs, according to editor reviews

The size, material and safety certifications can all determine which travel carrier is right for your dog.

We’re celebrating National Pet Week at NBC Select by sharing our favorite pet products. Shop puppy supplies , kitten essentials and more on our pets homepage .

We all want our dogs by our side as much as possible, and that might include them tagging along on vacations and holiday trips. But traveling with a pet usually involves a range of safety considerations, including gathering the right health paperwork , keeping treats and water on hand and making sure they’re comfortable. Since most airlines and other transportation methods will require taking your dog in some kind of enclosure, the pet carrier you choose is crucial in keeping your dog safe and comfortable.

We spoke to veterinarians, vet technicians and travel safety experts about what to look for in a travel carrier for your dog and how to shop for one that’ll keep them safe. We also compiled a list of carriers either tested by NBC Select staff or recommended by our experts to consider.

How we picked the best dog travel carriers

When shopping for the best travel carrier for your dog, our experts recommend considering the following factors:

  • Size: Pick a carrier that’s big enough for your pet to comfortably stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. The carrier should be as long as the tip of the dog’s nose to the base of the tail, says veterinarian Dr. Kristen L. Nelson . Carriers will usually come in a variety of sizes to fit different breed types (though keep in mind that airline-approved carriers have very specific dimension requirements that will usually only fit small dogs under 20 pounds, according to our experts).
  • Materials and build: Carriers are usually soft-sided and made of polyester or nylon, which are easy to clean and water- and tear-resistant, according to our experts. Choose one with mesh sides to provide a good amount of ventilation. Most importantly, you should opt for a carrier that can stand up on its own and not collapse around your pet or deform easily, says Dr. Christina Carlo , a veterinarian and medical director at VCA Avondale Veterinary Hospital. Hard plastic carriers are usually designed for airplane cargo holds, but they’re a safe and durable option for car rides, too, says Carlo.
  • Airline requirements: Commercial airlines will usually have certain dimension requirements for carriers that go in the plane’s cabin (with the passenger) and crates that travel in the cargo area of the plane. Most airlines like United Airlines , Jetblue and American Airlines have varying dimension requirements, so be sure to visit their site before traveling.
  • Crash testing: Look for carriers and crates that have undergone independent crash testing by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), which gives your pet the best possible chance of survival if a crash occurs, says Dr. Wendy Hauser , a veterinarian and special advisor to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance.

Best dog travel carriers of 2024

Below are the best dog travel carriers based on experts’ guidance and NBC Select staff experience. We also include top-rated options and key factors to consider, including the carrier’s material, weight capacity and dimensions.

Best overall travel carrier: Away The Pet Carrier

Away Pet Carrier

Away Pet Carrier

  • CPS certified
  • Mesh sides and top
  • Removable and washable bedding
  • Recommended for smaller dogs

This Away travel carrier, an NBC Select Pet Award for best overall travel carrier, is designed for both car and airline travel. It has zip openings on the top and front with see-through mesh to help your pet see out of the carrier (if you prefer to avoid this, there’s a piece of fabric that rolls down to cover their view).

Dog sitting in blue travel carrier

I use this carrier to fly with my 16-pound havanese and bichon frise mix, Bella, because it’s sturdy and makes her feel safe and supported thanks to its durable nylon and leather construction. The mesh gives her enough visibility to know what’s going on outside and helps me keep tabs on her, too. It also comes with machine-washable bedding on the inside that’s soft to the touch, and multiple pockets that keep my belongings and pet essentials accessible during the whole flight. If you’re traveling by car, the carrier has latches on one side that securely fasten to a car’s seat belt system. The Away carrier comes in black and blue colors and you can also personalize it with your initials for an additional $35.

Pet weight: Up to 18 lbs | Dimensions (LxWxH): 18.7 x 10.8 x 10.75 in. | Material: Water-resistant nylon

Best airline-approved carrier: Sherpa Pet Carrier

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

  • More affordable option
  • Very well ventilated
  • Removable and washable liner
  • Recommended for smaller pets

Another NBC Select Pet Awards winner, this Sherpa carrier is a favorite of CPS founder Lindsey Wolko, who has used it for years to travel with her own pets. She specifically recommends it for air travel because it fits under the passenger seat (it meets the dimensions for most airlines, but always check your specific airline’s requirements before traveling) and has a large zip pocket to store pet supplies like water bowls, leashes and treats. However, it’s not the best pick for car travel because you can’t strap it in using your vehicle’s seat belt system — you’re better off placing it on the floor behind the driver’s seat for safety and to avoid the stitching or zippers to fail, says Wolko.

Cavalier King Charles spaniel dog sitting in black travel carrier

NBC Select manager of editorial operations Shari Uyehara uses this carrier to fly with her 20-pound cavalier King Charles spaniel, Loki, and says it’s a great affordable option. Loki can comfortably shift positions during the flight, and the carrier itself is structured enough to maintain its shape while under the seat, says Uyehara. The sides are made of see-through mesh that allows your pet to easily see out of it. Available in medium and large sizes, the carrier also has shorter top handles and a longer shoulder strap to fit your carrying preferences.

Pet weight: Up to 16 lbs | Dimensions: 17 x 11 x 10.5 in. (medium size) | Material: Polyester and mesh

Best hard-sided carrier: Gunner Kennel G1

Gunner Kennel G1

Gunner Kennel G1

  • Can't be used as carry-on

This crate earned a 5-star safety rating from the CPS in both the crate and carrier class (the only product to earn a dual certification), and it’s a favorite among our experts. The crate has a thick exterior layer for impact protection, which keeps your pet safe if there’s a crash or a fall, according to the brand. Its reversible door design with an aluminum frame lets you open the crate from either side, and won’t pop open in the middle of a flight, according to the brand. It comes in four sizes — small, medium, intermediate and large — and Gunner offers a size guide that gives recommendations based on your dog’s weight and length.

Pet weight: Up to 30 lbs for small, up to 45 lbs for medium, up to 75 lbs for intermediate and up to 110 lbs for large size | Dimensions: 24.5 x 18.625 x 19 in. (small), 29.5 x 20.5 x 23.5 in. (medium), 34 x 23 x 28.5 in. (intermediate), 40.25 x 28 x 33.25 in. (large) | Material: Reinforced aluminum frame

Best soft-sided carrier: EliteField Soft-Sided Dog & Cat Carrier Bag

EliteField Soft-Sided Dog & Cat Carrier Bag

EliteField Soft-Sided Dog & Cat Carrier Bag

At just over two pounds, this is the most lightweight soft-sided pet carrier on our list. It comes recommended by Dr. Amber Karwacki , a veterinarian and partner doctor at Heart + Paw in Callowhill, Pennsylvania, because it has mesh panels on both sides and the front to let air in and prevent your pet from overheating, according to the brand. It also comes with removable and machine-washable bedding and has a back sleeve that attaches to your suitcase, as well as loops that latch onto your car’s seat belt system. The polyester and synthetic build is water-resistant and available in six colors to fit your personal style.

Pet weight: Up to 18 lbs | Dimensions: 19 x 10 x 13 in. | Material: Polyester

Best tote carrier: Wild One Everyday Carrier

Wild One Everyday Carrier

Wild One Everyday Carrier

  • Remains open

If you’re looking for a tote to carry your dog around town or on the train, consider this Wild One carrier. This NBC Select staff-favorite option has a small dip in its design, which allows your dog to peek their head out while you carry them around. “I love that Loki’s weight remains balanced in the carrier, but he still has room to move around,” says Uyehara, who appreciates its stability. It also includes a safety clip that attaches to your dog’s harness, ensuring they won’t jump out at a bad time, according to Karwacki (but be sure to never connect this clip to their collar since it poses a choking hazard). It also comes with carrying straps of two different lengths — one for carrying it like a shoulder bag, and shorter straps to carry it by hand. There is a machine-washable mat on the inside and three exterior pockets to hold all your pet’s essentials like bags, treats and toys.

Pet weight: Up to 20 lbs | Dimensions: 21.5 x 7.5 x 14.25 in. | Material: Recycled polyester outer, cotton interior

Best collapsible carrier: Roverlund Out-Of-Office Pet Carrier

Roverlund Pet Carrier

Roverlund Pet Carrier

An NBC Select Pet Awards winner, the small version of this Roverlund carrier is an airline-approved option for both dogs and cats because it’s less than 18 inches long. The straps are all ropes, which our staff found to be more comfortable and supportive than other carrier straps made from typical polyester or fabric. The interior lining is machine-washable and you can also shop the larger version of this carrier for dogs up to 25 pounds.

Pet weight: Up to 20 lbs | Dimensions: 17 x 11 x 10.5 in. (small size) | Material: Water-resistant polyester, mountain climbing rope

Best backpack carrier: Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack

Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack

Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack

  • Adjustable straps
  • Pet can see outside

This highly rated backpack carrier, which has a 4.6-star average rating from over 4,900 reviews on Amazon, has shoulder straps and two separate straps that buckle around your sternum and waist to help evenly distribute the weight of your pet, according to the brand. It has mesh panels on all sides to let your pet see out and comes with removable fleece bedding to keep them comfortable while creating a sturdy base that can hold their weight, according to Apollo. It also comes with a clip that attaches to your pet’s harness to prevent them from escaping or falling out.

Pet weight: N/A | Dimensions: 12.6 x 11.4 x 16.8 in. | Material: Polyester

Best expandable carrier: Midwest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

MidWest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

MidWest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

  • No removable bedding
  • Not as ventilated as others

This Midwest Duffy carrier comes recommended by Karwacki because it’s expandable — the mesh sides open up to give your pet more room to move around and stretch their legs. It has two zippered side openings, as well as one on top to make taking your dog in and out easier, according to the brand. It also folds completely flat, so you can store it away when it’s not in use. It comes in three colors and sizes small, medium and large.

Pet weight: Up to 15 lbs | Dimensions: 16.3 x 10.1 x 9.3 in. (small), 18.3 x 11.3 x 11.1 in. (medium) and 19.3 x 12.2 x 12.2 in. (large) | Material: Polyester

Best for medium-sized dogs: Arlo Skye The Pet Carrier

Arlo Skye The Pet Carrier

Arlo Skye The Pet Carrier

  • No mesh top

This Arlo Skye pet carrier has mesh panels on all sides, making it a well-ventilated option for your pup. It comes with memory foam bedding on the inside that’s both removable and machine-washable, as well as a foldable design you can pack easily in your suitcase or travel bag, according to the brand. It has dual openings on both ends and a back trolley sleeve to place it over your carry-on . The carrier is also highly rated with a 4.9-star average rating from over 60 reviews at Arlo Skye.

Pet weight: Up to 25 lbs | Dimensions: 17.5 x 11 x 10 in. | Material: Poly-mesh and nylon

Best for small dogs: Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is an expert-recommended and CPS-certified option that has breathable mesh and a machine-washable interior — it’s built for plane travel for dogs under 15 pounds. Nelson recommends the Sleepypod because it’s easy to carry and gives the pet privacy while traveling since it’s fully enclosed with a mesh panel at the top.

Like several other carriers on this list, the Sleepypod isn’t limited to airline travel: It straps into a vehicle’s seat belt system, so you can comfortably take road trips with your pet. You can also separate the bottom of the carrier to transform it into a bed for your pet, which makes training easier since they can form a positive association with it, says Wolko. The brand’s Sleepypod Atom is another CPS-certified carrier that’s crash-tested for even smaller dogs up to 12 pounds, the lowest weight requirement on this list.

Pet weight: Up to 15 lbs | Dimensions: 17 in. (D) x 6.5 in. | Material: Polyester

Best lightweight carrier: Molly and Stitch Alpine Dog Carrier

Molly and Stitch Alpine Dog Carrier

Molly and Stitch Alpine Dog Carrier

  • Stylish design
  • Padded and comfortable
  • Machine-washable
  • Not for plane travel

This tote carrier is great for smaller dogs, and its lightweight design is convenient to take anywhere. It's a favorite of NBC Select social commerce editor Sadhana Daruvuri, who says her 2-year-old maltipoo Bandit fits comfortably inside. “This carrier is very high quality, and it was so stylish that I would happily use it as an everyday bag,” says Daruvuri. “Cleaning it is also easy — you can just throw it in the wash, and even after repeated uses, the bag looks brand new.”

  • Has multiple pocket
  • Not as much mesh as others

Diggs is an NBC Select Pet Award -winning brand that makes some of our favorite dog crates. The brand’s Passenger Travel Carrier is great for both plane and car travel: It fits many airlines’ size requirements, and it has custom seat belt clips and a buckle strap to place it safely in your car. It also comes with a Diggs Pee Pad that attaches to the included bed — if your dog chooses to use it, you can open the side panel to swap it out without disrupting your pup, according to the brand.

Best sling carrier: Tomkas Dog Sling Carrier

Tomkas Dog Sling Carrier

Tomkas Dog Sling Carrier

  • Easy to take on the go
  • Zip pockets for small items
  • Requires physical strength

Designed for small dogs up to 10 pounds, this sling carrier crosses over your body so you can take your dog around town hands-free. The base has a built-in drawstring that adjusts the size of the opening to fit different sized dogs, and the crossbody strap length is also adjustable to fit your comfort level. The carrier includes a safety buckle inside that connects to your dog’s harness to prevent them from falling out, according to the brand. I purchased this carrier for my dog Bella when she was a puppy, and I was able to comfortably carry her around when she got tired of walking. It held her weight well without tearing or damaging the fabric, and the crossbody strap caused less strain on my back.

Pet weight: Up to 10 lbs | Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 3 in. | Material: Polyester

How to shop for a dog travel carrier

Carriers and crates are the most secure type of enclosure when traveling with your dog because they prevent them from escaping and minimize distraction while you’re traveling (especially while driving), says Wolko. But the right carrier for your dog will depend on what type of trip you’re taking, your method of transportation and their temperament.

When shopping for the right carrier for your dog, our experts recommend considering the size and fit of the enclosure, whether it’s crash-tested, if it meets airline requirements and more.

Your dog or cat should be able to easily stand up, turn around and lay comfortably in their carrier. That means the length of your carrier from front to back should measure about the same, or one or two inches more than the tip of your dog’s nose to the base of their tail, says Nelson. You should add a few more inches for brachycephalic breeds like pugs, pekingese and French bulldogs, though experts don’t recommend taking these breeds on flights because their shorter noses increase the risk of overheating and oxygen deprivation, says Nelson (some airlines even ban this breed from flying in the cargo hold , according to the American Veterinary Medical Association). To determine the right height of your carrier, make sure it measures the same or larger than the height of your pet from the floor to the top of their shoulders, says Carlo.

Place a mat or bed in the carrier to make the space more comfortable for your pet, says Carlo (though you should avoid this if your dog usually destroys their bedding because they might eat the pieces and cause intestinal obstruction). Putting soft blankets or their favorite toy in the carrier can also help them feel familiar and safe, according to our experts.

Whether your dog can see out of their carrier is a matter of personal preference, though our experts recommend mesh so the outside is visible, which prevents your dog from feeling threatened or confused while they’re traveling, says Wolko.

Materials and structure

Most carriers are soft-sided and made from materials like polyester, mesh and nylon fabric. Consider whether the carrier has structure, meaning it can stand up on its own and won’t automatically collapse around your pet, according to Carlo. You should also look for carriers that have pockets, so you have room for your pet supplies.

You can take a hard-sided, non-collapsible crate or kennel on an airplane, but they must be able to fit under the passenger’s seat, according to Hauser (this might be harder to do compared to soft-sided carriers since they don’t mold to a different size). Plastic hard-sided crates are usually good for transporting your pet in an airplane cargo hold and the cargo area of a car — they’re considered to be the safest option since they won’t lose their shape and provide impact protection in case of a crash, turbulence or hard fall, according to our experts. However, you should avoid metal wire crates because pets might be able to stick their feet or limbs out, which can be a safety hazard while traveling, says Karwacki.

Safety considerations

For car travel, look for carriers and crates that have undergone crash testing by the Center for Pet Safety, a registered nonprofit and advocacy organization that crash tests car restraints and containment devices. This provides an extra layer of safety when traveling with your pet, our experts say.

“Most carriers on the market only prevent distractions [for the driver], which is important, but in a crash, they may not perform as you would expect them to,” says Wolko. The CPS certification tests carriers as an unaffiliated third party. This is important when considering that many brands subjectively “pass” their carriers if they test them in their own labs, which can ultimately give pet owners a false sense of security, according to Wolko.

Though the CPS does not specifically test carriers and crates for airline travel, you can use most carriers that meet the airline’s size requirements and have ample ventilation, according to Wolko.

A CPS-certified crate usually has backup door latches and locking mechanisms to prevent your pet from escaping, which is especially useful if they travel in the aircraft’s cargo hold. “So, if something tumbles, the kennel is so robust that the pet is not getting out,” says Wolko. Most airlines have certain regulations for what carriers to use when transporting an animal in the cargo area of a plane. The International Air Transport Association, a globally recognized trade association for the world’s airlines, details specific requirements for crates to transport animals in the cargo hold, including construction and adequate ventilation (more on that below).

Frequently Asked Questions

For air travel, always check with your airline to see what type and size of carrier it allows. The approved dimensions of your carrier vary from airline to airline but, in most cases, carriers can’t exceed 11 inches in height, which allows it to fit under the seat in front of the passenger, according to Hauser. Also, the carrier will likely count as your carry-on luggage on most airlines, and in-cabin travel will usually require you to make a reservation or reserve a seat specifically for your dog.

Certain airlines might also have specific pet size and weight requirements for in-cabin travel. Typically, pets must weigh 20 pounds or less, though this varies by airline, and most larger dogs can’t ride in-cabin unless they’re a trained service animal, says Wolko. If your pet exceeds that limit, they’ll need to travel in the cargo area of the plane.

Most airlines will allow trained service dogs on board at no cost. However, some airlines like Delta Air Lines, Southwest, American Airlines and Alaska Air are no longer accepting emotional support animals on board.

Carriers and crates for dogs are usually used interchangeably, but there are a few key differences. The CPS defines crates as enclosures that are secured in the cargo area of a plane or tethered securely to the floor of a vehicle like a van or SUV. They’re usually constructed of thick molded plastic or metal and designed for larger dogs, according to our experts.

Carriers, on the other hand, are usually designed for smaller dogs and made of a soft-sided fabric (though some are constructed of a harder plastic or nylon to prevent them from collapsing on your pet). When traveling in a car, the carrier usually goes in the backseat and is strapped in using the seatbelt system of your vehicle.

Yes, it is generally safe and common to travel with your dog in the cargo hold (also known as the lower deck) of an airplane, which also holds baggage. However, experts recommend only flying your pet in the cargo hold when it’s absolutely necessary because it can be a very stressful experience for them.

“There’s a lot of weird noises, not much light down there — it’d be scary for anyone to go in the [cargo hold], ” says Karwacki. And, most handling risks come before they even board the plane: Dogs usually endure the most force when being transported across the rough, uneven tarmac to get to the plane, says Wolko.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) lists specific requirements for crates, including construction and ventilation, to keep your pet safe when flying in the cargo hold. For example, the trade association specifies that crates must be sturdy and inescapable and adequately ventilated on three sides, with the majority of the ventilation being provided on the upper part of the container.

Most aircraft cargo holds are temperature-controlled and pressurized, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture . Animals can’t be exposed to temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 4 hours, per the USDA’s website. Most airlines won’t transport dogs altogether if ground temperatures reach those extremes.

How to help your dog feel calm in a travel carrier

Your pet’s comfort level in their carrier can determine how smooth your travels are. Below, we list a few expert tips about how to get your dog adjusted to their carrier and how to keep them comfortable during long trips.

  • Know your dog’s safety and security preferences. Some dogs prefer more open-sided kennels with better airflow and visibility, while others feel safer with the cave-like security of a molded plastic carrier with smaller windows, says Hauser.
  • Make the carrier or crate their “happy spot.” Allowing your pet to build a positive association with their carrier helps them feel calm and safe while traveling, according to our experts. In your home and before traveling, leave the door open so that your pup can explore the enclosure on their own terms, which demystifies it, says Hauser. After some time, it isn’t uncommon to find pets that preferentially sleep in their enclosures,” she says. Once they get acclimated to the crate or carrier at home, you can then graduate to car trips and, later on, plane rides. Start off with brief trips that increase in duration over time.
  • Make the carrier feel familiar. As we mentioned, putting their favorite bed, blankets or toys in the carrier can help make them feel more comfortable.
  • Avoid any safety risks while on the plane. For example, if you’re traveling with your pet in-cabin, never put the carrier in the overhead compartment of the plane with your pet inside because it poses a suffocation risk, says Wolko. Also, feed your pet before you get on the plane — if they choke or get something lodged in their throat while you’re in the air, they likely won’t get help in time, according to Wolko.

Khao Manee

There are many cat breeds in Thailand, and several have spread around the world and gained recognition. Along with winning hearts with their stunning looks, these fascinating felines have also established themselves with Thai culture and beliefs.

In this article, we introduce you to Thailand’s most popular cat breeds. While some are recognizable, we are confident that there are others that you have yet to meet and will adore due to their distinctive traits, endearing personalities, and interesting history.

  • How Are Cat Breeds From Thailand Classified?

There were once 23 kinds of native Thai cats, some of which were seen as bringing good luck and others as ominous omens, according to texts like the Tamra Maew, a book of cat lyrics penned by Buddhist monks more than 300 years ago.

Thai cats have gained popularity worldwide since King Rama V’s reign, and many modern breeds may trace their ancestry to Thailand. Numerous international breeding initiatives assisted in developing recognizable traits, and some Thai breeds eventually obtained official recognition from cat breed organizations.

  • The 9 Popular Cat Breeds From Thailand
  • 1. Thai Cat

thai cat lying on the floor

Thai cats are sometimes referred to as traditional Siamese. Wichienmaat is the breed’s name in Thai , which means “moon diamond.” When Siamese cats arrived in the West, breeders immediately started highlighting some of their traits, which is why the Siamese and the Thai cats often get confused. They are an ancient breed with fuller cheeks and a less angular profile.

Some claim that Thais and Siamese have very similar personalities. They are both intelligent, inquisitive, and energetic breeds. Thai cats value their human relationships and dislike being left alone. They have a cute way of communicating by tapping their paw on your shoulder or leaping onto your shoulder and burying their face in yours.

  • 2. Siamese Cat

Blue Point Siamese Cat Exploring

It was once only acceptable for royalty to keep a Siamese cat as a pet. According to legends, Siamese cats served as temple guardians, receiving lavish care and feedings while guarding the souls of influential people who had passed away. The once-regal cats delight their keepers with their exquisite appearance and playful personalities in present-day Thailand.

Siamese cats have a distinctive, high-contrast colorpoint pattern that makes them easy to identify. They are incredibly vibrant and intelligent, and if they aren’t given daily stimulation, their inquisitive behavior may get them into trouble.

Siamese cats can make fantastic additions for families looking for an affectionate feline with a dynamic personality, particularly those with children and dogs. They become attached and shadow-like to their owners and demand playtime and affection.

  • 3. Burmese Cat

Brown Burmese cat in the garden

The Burmese cat is a domestic breed that originated in Thailand or Myanmar and was later developed in the United States and Britain. One female named Wong Mau, which was imported from Burma to America in 1930 and crossed with American Siamese, is the ancestor of most of today’s Burmese.

Burmese cats are renowned for their gregarious demeanor and dog-like personality traits. Even though they are calm cats as adults, they often act like kittens and enjoy playing.

They appreciate any attention that they receive from their pet parents. Burmese cats have been called “Velcro cats” because they always like to stay with their owners, forming close relationships with them.

Korat Cat laying down on a couch

The Korat has roots in Phimai, Thailand, and is named after Nakhon Ratchasima Province, often referred to as “Korat” by Thais. They are called Si Sawat in Thailand, which means “color of the sawat seed.” The Korat is also known as the “good luck cat” and was traditionally given in pairs to newlyweds or highly regarded individuals as a sign of luck.

Korats were never sold before the middle of the 20th century; instead, they were always given as presents. The unique coat color of the Korat is blue with a silver, shimmery look. The Thai people often refer to the color as “rain-cloud gray.”

These are intelligent, affectionate lap cats that form close relationships with their families. Compared to most cats, Korats are more relaxed and laidback but still love toys and interactions with their owners. They may be wary or distant among strangers, but they will always look for their family to keep them secure.

  • 5. Khao Manee

Khao Manee two colored eye

The Khao Manee cat, which translates to “white gem,” is a rare breed that was first discovered in Thailand and has a long history dating back hundreds of years. Despite the breed being popular in their native country, Western cat breeders have only recently gained access to these cats.

The Khao Manee’s short, smooth, all-white coat is their most prominent characteristic, with some exhibiting one blue and one green eye. A Khao Manee is known for their extroverted and cheerful nature, even with strangers, and would almost likely run to meet visitors with a smile.

The active, inquisitive, and possibly even mischievous behavior of this cat is all in good fun and balanced by their pleasant demeanor. These lively felines love interactive play and develop strong bonds with children and other pets.

  • 6. Mekong Bobtail

White Mekong Bobtail Cat walking on a black background

The Mekong Bobtail , formerly the Thai Bobtail, was initially named after Thailand, the place of origin of their ancestors, but the name is now after the Mekong River. Since they were given as gifts to the Russian Tsar, Mekong Bobtails are regarded as aristocratic or regal cats. They still have this air of royalty, and people often interpret them as lucky charms for their owners. The Mekong Bobtail is similar to the Siamese in that both have point coloring, but the former’s bobbed tail makes them unique.

The calm and laidback nature of the Mekong Bobtail, similar to that of a dog, makes them good with young children. These cats are fantastic for homes with children and other pets since they are affectionate and devoted and love spending time with their owners and family.

Due to their beautiful gait, similar to a lion’s, Konja cats were once compared to the Singha, a mythical Thai lion. Thai people had a superstition that if they fed the cat, great fortune would come their way. The Konja cat is still a typical feature in Thai temples today.

The literature describes the original Konja as having a black tongue, eyes, teeth, and claws. However, modern scientists think a disease or parasite may have caused the characteristic. They were originally black with a white stripe under the chin and along the stomach, but today, they are often entirely black and sometimes confused with Bombay cats.

Not only are Konja cats beautiful, mysterious, and considered charming, but they are also intelligent, curious, affectionate, and make wonderful pets. They are the ideal family-oriented cat that enjoys playing and cuddling and will often follow their owners around the home.

The breed is a beautiful choice for families with small children since they are patient with kids and can tolerate their rough play. They are also emotionally sensitive to their owners, which makes them the perfect companion for singles or owners looking for a comfort companion.

  • 8. Tonkinese Cat

Tonkinese Cat standing on a white background

The Tonkinese cat is a mix of the Siamese and Burmese and often displays the best traits of both parents. With their pointed coat and sparkling, jewel-toned eyes, this beautiful feline won’t go unrecognized.

It is believed that natural pairings between Siamese and Burmese cats caused the cats to keep showing up in Thailand and the region once known as Burma. In the 1930s, one of the domestic cats called Wong Mau was brought to the United States, and she was the mother of the Burmese and Tonkinese breeds that still exist today. Breeder Milan Greer produced the first Siamese and Burmese breed in the 1950s. The Tonkin region in northern Vietnam is where the Tonkinese cats we know today got their name.

They are sociable, intelligent, playful, and highly affectionate. Tonkinese enjoy social interaction and tucking themselves into warm laps at night.

  • 9. Suphalak

suphalak cat in bed

The highly uncommon Suphalak cat originated in Thailand more than three centuries ago. Often, a breed disperses globally, with the United States being one of the final stops, but the first Suphalak outside of Thailand was born in the United States on September 15, 2015.

Despite being mistaken for Burmese or Havana Brown cats due to their stunning brown and copper coloring, the Suphalak is a breed of their own. You can expect the smart, people-oriented Suphalak to show you the same level of affection you give them.

They form strong bonds with their family members and are likely to be close to you all day. Some claim that they have a dog-like nature rather than acting like other cats. Suphalaks can only be found in Thailand and the United States.

As one of the rarest and priciest breeds, the Suphalak is a favorite target of dishonest breeders and cat thieves, so they should be kept indoors as often as possible.

Thailand has long been recognized as the birthplace of some of the world’s most amazing feline companions. They are all clearly loved for their distinct and gorgeous features and affectionate natures . They have also been intertwined with Thai culture and beliefs and have a rich history.

These cats continue to play a significant role in several Thai cultures today. Those fortunate enough to have a Thai cat as a family member will experience many years of joy and love.

American Airlines' Dog Policy: 5 Things To Know

  • American Airlines allows carrying a dog or a cat in the cabin, though it must meet size, age, and destination restrictions.
  • The US-based legacy carrier accepts a maximum of seven kennels in the cabin, while the regional subsidiary, American Eagle, only allows five.
  • Besides the kennel, passengers are only entitled to another personal item, but no carry-on bag.

Some say that solo travel is the best way of exploring the world while reconnecting to our inner selves. Some others would never embark on an adventure without their travel buddy, and finally, we find those who love travel groups, whose motto is "the more, the merrier." However, airlines should not forget about another fundamental group of travelers, i.e., those who do not want to leave their pets behind. Indeed, increasingly, more people do not want their furry friends missing from the holiday portrait, which means they might need to bring them on a plane.

However, not all airlines have the same rules for carrying pets, which, on the one hand, is not welcoming news for airport staff dealing with customers at check-in desks. Neither is it for the customers, who must go through airline websites repeatedly to get all the information they need to ensure their cute travel companions reach their final destination. Simple Flying has put together five must-knows if you are planning a trip with American Airlines and are thinking of bringing your pets along.

Which Rules Surround Taking Pets On Airplanes In 2023?

It's raining flying cats and dogs, american airlines only allows cats and dogs in the cabin.

First things first, you should know American Airlines only allows cats and dogs in the cabin. Therefore, if you have any other kind of pet, say, a guinea pig, they won't be allowed in the cabin with this carrier. According to the airline's rules, a cat or a dog can be carried in the cabin as long as they meet size, age, and destination requirements. Should these conditions be met, the pet can be taken on most flights lasting up to 12 hours and on those to or from the following locations:

  • The 48 contiguous United States.
  • The United States and Canada.
  • Puerto Rico.
  • St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.
  • St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

On American Airlines' flights, passengers are allowed to bring one kennel onboard, provided that they have paid the carry-on pet fee and that the pet stays in the kennel, which must be placed under the front seat for the entire flight. Additionally, the kennel substitutes the carry-on bag if a pet is carried in the cabin. Therefore, passengers are only entitled to bring one personal item besides the kennel.

Flying your pet at all costs

The pet in cabin fee is $125 each way.

If you're traveling on a budget, you might want to double-check how much you will be charged to carry your furry friend in the cabin with you.

American Airlines charges its passengers willing to bring their pet in the cabin a $125 fee each way. Additionally, if you're flying domestically with a voluntary stop-over at one of American's hubs lasting more than four hours, you'll incur an additional $125 charge. Besides this cost, you might want to become an expert with aircraft types, as pets are not allowed on every plane in the American Airlines fleet. Indeed, because of a lack of under-seat storage, pets are not permitted on the following aircraft types:

  • Boeing B777-200
  • Boeing B777-300
  • Boeing B787-8
  • Boeing B787-9

As you're paying quite a sum to make your furry friend fly with you, you want to ensure they are fit to board a plane. When the carrier is American Airlines, this means the pet must not have been sedated. Indeed, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), pets that have been given sedatives or tranquilizers incur a higher risk of respiratory or cardiovascular problems at higher altitudes.

Let's talk numbers

From kennel size to maximum number of pet in cabin per aircraft.

To make things easier for its passengers, American Airlines publishes the maximum number of pets allowed in the cabin for each flight.

On its mainline flights, American Airlines only allows seven kennels, even though service animals do not count toward this limit. American Eagle, the carrier's regional subsidiary, only accepts a maximum of five kennels per flight. Regarding the kennel, the airline allows soft-sided and hard-sided carriers. For the latter, the size requirements vary based on whether you're flying American Airlines or American Eagle.

On American Airlines' flights, hard kennels should not exceed the following size:

  • 19 inches by 13 inches by 9 inches (48 cm by 33 cm by 22 cm)

On American Eagle flights, measures for the kennel change to the following:

  • 16 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches (40 cm by 30 cm by 8 cm)

If it is the first time you are carrying your pet in the cabin, and you still have to purchase a kennel, American Airlines recommends a soft-sided one, whose measures are:

  • 18 inches by 18 inches by 11 inches (45 cm by 45 cm by 28 cm)

Checked pets

Not all pets are allowed as checked pets.

For now, if your furry friend does not meet the requirements to travel in the cabin, you are most likely not allowed to make them fly as checked baggage on your flight.

Indeed, American Airlines currently only accepts checked pets for active-duty US military and US State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders. Up to two pets can be checked, and these must always meet the destination's minimum age and health requirements. In case you are checking a pet, you are required to provide a health certificate, which must be issued by a vet within:

  • Ten days of departure
  • 60 days of return (for travel on the same ticket)
  • Ten days of return (for travel on separate tickets)

Suppose your pet does not qualify for cabin travel or as a checked pet. In that case, you might consider shipping it to your final destination through the American Airlines PetEmbark program, whose specifics are illustrated in the video below.

Temperature restrictions

These ensure the well-being of the pets.

Let's not forget that we constantly look for comfort when we travel. So would a pet. Therefore, American Airlines mandates some temperature restrictions to ensure its well-being while onboard.

These restrictions are mainly aimed at ensuring that checked pets and pets traveling in the cargo section are not exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures at the following touchpoints:

  • The animal holding area
  • At terminal facilities
  • When moving animals between the terminal and the aircraft
  • On the plane

If the current or forecasted temperature at any location of the itinerary is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 degrees C), the pet is not allowed to fly. Additionally, pets that are not traveling in the cabin cannot fly to, through, or from Phoenix (PHX), Tucson (TUS), Las Vegas (LAS), or Palm Springs (PSP) between May 1st and September 30th. On the other hand, pets are not allowed if the current or forecasted temperature at any location of the itinerary is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 degrees C).

The cold temperature limitation can be waived if you hold a written letter from a vet including the following points:

  • Your name and address
  • Your pet’s name
  • Your vet’s name and signature
  • Your vet’s accreditation date and number
  • The temperature your pet is acclimated to

Additionally, the letter must be issued:

  • Within 10 days of the first flight
  • Within 30 days of any other trips in the same itinerary

However, should the temperature drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.6 degrees C), the pet is not allowed to fly even with a letter from the licensed vet.

Snakes discovered in passenger's pants by TSA at Miami International Airport: See photos

travel thailand with pet

Let's call them snakes headed on a plane.

Transportation Security Administration agents in South Florida got a slithery surprise after the federal agency reported finding snakes in a passenger's pants at an airport checkpoint.

According to TSA, the reptilian discovery took place at the Miami International Airport on Friday.

The agency did not identify the passenger or say whether they were arrested.

Photos taken at the airport provided by TSA show two slender pink snakes outside of a small camo-colored bag, after apparently being pulled from the passenger's pants before they were able to board a plane.

Snakes found in passenger's pants turned over to Florida wildlife officers

After the discovery, TSA said it called the Customs and Border Protection Southeast Region and Miami-Dade Police for assistance.

It was not immediately known if the snakes were the passengers pets or whether the person was simply trying to transport them out of the city.

The snakes, TSA reported, were turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Internet reacts to snakes in pants

When TSA posted the finding on X over the weekend, people on the internet had thoughts.

One user posted: "OMG why would anyone have that?!"

"Is that a snake in your pants?" another person asked.

Another X reader commented: "Maybe he wanted to film a remake of the movie 'Snakes on a Plane'!!!"

"Because the TSSSSSSSSSA fearsssssss competition," one person posted .

BANGKOK: Heatstroke has killed 61 people in Thailand so far this year, more than in all of 2023, the health ministry said on Friday (May 10) after weeks of scorching weather across the region.

A wave of exceptionally hot weather blasted Thailand in recent weeks , prompting authorities to issue warnings about scorching hot weather on a near-daily basis. The health ministry said on Friday that 61 people have died from heatstroke since the beginning of 2024, compared with 37 in the whole of 2023. Thailand's northeast - the agricultural heartland - saw the highest number of deaths, the ministry said. Scientists have long warned human-induced climate change will produce more frequent, longer and more intense heatwaves. While the El Nino phenomenon is helping drive this year's exceptionally warm weather, Asia is also warming faster than the global average, according to the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization. Apichart Vachiraphan, deputy of Thailand's Department of Disease Control, warned people with underlying medical conditions to limit their time outdoors. The kingdom this year experienced a delay in its monsoon season, with sweltering hot weather lasting longer than normal. Storms have hit parts of the kingdom this week, lowering temperatures but bringing warnings from the authorities of potential flash flooding.

In April, the kingdom recorded a temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius in the northern province of Lampang - just shy of the all-time national record of 44.6 degrees Celsius last year.
