Santorini sunset: The 9 best places to watch one

Santorini sunsets are legendary – the caldera views, the domed churches and belltowers, the curved cave-like houses and the distant islands on the horizon make it one of the best places to watch a sunset on the planet.

In my Santorini sunset guide we show you the best sunset spots in Santorini, and also suggest some Santorini sunset cruises, a magical way to experience the sunset down on the caldera.

I mainly stick to viewpoints on the caldera in Oia and Fira , as these are where you’ll get the best sunsets in Santorini, and mention another couple of places to watch the sunset in Santorini that you could explore if you’re staying for a week or so.

Why Is The Santorini Sunset Famous?

Santorini is a unique volcanic island, its villages perched atop 200-metre-high cliffs with outstanding views over the caldera below and the surrounding Cyclades islands.

Add in the spectacular Santorini architecture – whitewashed churches with blue domes, the simple white cave-like houses and centuries-old windmills and you have an astounding place to watch the sunset on your hands.

Santorini sunsets regularly rate among the world’s best in online polls, and I’d go so far as to say that seeing a Santorini caldera sunset is the best thing to do on the island.

I’d look to spend one evening in Oia to see the sunset from the Byzantine Castle (also known as Fort Londsa). It is ridiculously overcrowded, but it is stunning.

I would also look to spend two evenings watching the sunset from Fira. Allow one evening to savour the view from above the Three Bells of Fira church in Firostefani, and another to enjoy the sunset at the southern end of the village, around St John the Theologian’s Church and the beautiful white Agios Minas church.

If you’re staying longer in Santorini and want to catch more sunsets, I’d consider an evening in the hill village of Pyrgos and possibly Akrotiri lighthouse.

If you’re only spending one day in Santorini , I’d look to visit the Three Bells of Fira for your Santorini sunset.

Photographing Santorini Sunset Tips

Santorini caldera is such a great place to watch the sunset because the elements are there to photograph so much more than ‘just’ the sunset.

The sunset is obviously top of the list when it comes to making photos of Santorini, but the churches and distinctive houses make great subjects in the late light of the day – there’s more scope for this in Fira than Oia, where you don’t have space to move if you want to keep your sunset spot.

You’ll find that many people leave after the sun sets, but they’re often missing the best part of the show – the afterglow. The fiery dusky sky can be even more spectacular as the sunset itself, so it pays to stick around until the lights are turned on, and indeed afterwards. Count on being there an hour after sunset, when only a few hardcore enthusiasts and photographers will be left.

Best Sunsets In Santorini – Our Top 9

1. oia sunset.

Oia (pronounced EE-a) is the most famous Santorini sunset location. Just off the main street (Nik. Nomikou) an alleyway leads left down the hill to the Byzantine Castle, which commands a superb view over the curved rooftops of the village and its two windmills.

It’s the vantage point for one of the best sunsets in Europe , indeed the world, but there’s one drawback – everyone knows it, and congregates there every time there’s a hint of something special.

The small castle ruin draws hundreds of people every night, so logistically the only way to get a front row spot is to arrive up to TWO HOURS early . It is what it is. By the time the sun is ready to sink over the horizon, you’ll have several hundred fellow visitors for company.

My tip is to wait it out at the front, then stay on for dusk and the gorgeous afterglow in the sky. By the time you leave the place will be nearly empty once again, your fellow sunset watchers will have headed back to their hotels and you can head back to your hotel, car or the bus to Fira.

2. Three Bells of Fira

The other contender for the best Santorini sunset is the tiny Three Bells of Fira church in Firostefani, just to the north of Fira. Just a few minutes’ walk from the main square in Firostefani, the viewpoint is directly above the iconic church with its white bellcote and blue dome.

It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever had the privilege to visit. The church is on the rim of the caldera, so the islands of Nea Kameni and Thirassia form the backdrop, while cruise ships float through the waters of the caldera.

On balance I’m tempted to say that this is the best place to watch the sunset in Santorini. The view is breathtaking and, unlike in Fira, even in peak season there are very few people there to savour the scene. I went for two sunsets there, and there were only 15-20 people there both times. A staggering Santorini sunset spot.

3. Agios Minas Church Fira

Agios Minas is a simple, stunning white-domed church at the southern end of Fira, easily reached by footpaths along the caldera rim or from the Metropolitan Cathedral just up the hill.

The view from the church over the caldera is fantastic, but there’s an even better one a short walk away which we’ll tell you about in the next section. I suggest heading visiting Agios Minas 15-20 minutes before the last light of the day to see the astonishing late light on this beautiful church, rich against the deep blue evening sky.

4. St John The Theologian Church Fira

St John’s Church is one of my favourite places to watch a Santorini caldera sunset, and one of the most beautiful churches in Santorini . The domed church is just down the hill from Agios Minas and the Metropolitan Cathedral, and you can view it from above (as in the shot with the walls and swimming pools around it) or close to dome level – just wander and explore.

The view of the cross on the dome is especially beautiful, with the backdrop of the island in the distance. As I finished shooting there, some kids climbed up onto the church roof to shoot their own pictures on their phones. Just find where I went and don’t go where they did.

5. Around St Stylianos Church Fira

One of the best things to do in Santorini is to wander along the caldera rim, particularly in Fira (you could always follow it the 10 km or so to Oia the next day). The area around the domed St Stylianos Church gets very interesting at sunset, as the church glows warm colours as the light gets lower.

Take a look up the hill to St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, its richly coloured dome and tower magnificent in the late light.

You could easily reach the viewpoint for the Three Bells of Fira from here (10-15 minutes’ walk maximum), then head back for the afterglow around St Stylianos church. At the Art of the Loom Gallery , a path leads past the Volkan on the Rocks café, where you could stop by for dinner or a drink with a superb view over Nea Kameni island in the caldera. It also looks great at dusk as the last of the glow fills the sky.

6. Sunset In Imerovigli

The village of Imerovigli begins just to the north of the Three Bells of Fira church, and the sunsets there are pretty spectacular too.

Imerovigli is on the northern curve of the caldera, and this is where the landmark Skaros rock comes into play as you watch sunset over the caldera from there. It’s another great Santorini sunset spot, perhaps not quite in same league as those in Oia and Fira, but to be honest, where in the world is?

7. On Board A Santorini Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise in Santorini is another amazing experience, drifting along the waters of the caldera between the volcanic islands. As well as watching the sun set over the Cyclades Islands and Aegean, you also get to enjoy the superb views back to the villages on the rim of the caldera, the whitewashed buildings almost orange in the dramatic late light.

There are many different Santorini sunset cruises to choose from. Some last up to 5 hours, taking you to the striking Santorini Red Beach and the remote White Beach before turning into the caldera for sunset.

Many include a full Greek meal with drinks, some offering an unlimited bar, a great way to end the day.

8. Pyrgos Village

Pyrgos Santorini – sometimes called Pyrgos Kallistis – is the highest of the villages in Santorini , with superb views west over the island to the caldera and neighbouring islands.

I spent a wonderful afternoon in Pyrgos but didn’t stay for a Pyrgos sunset. That said, I reconnoitred the village, and in the quieter upper part of the village there are a couple of small traditional churches with typical bellcotes that would look great silhouetted at sunset.

The whitewashed churches and houses of the village would also look stunning in the low light before sunset. Once you’ve seen a sunset in Oia and at least one in Fira I suggest spending an evening in Pyrgos. The village is so much quieter than Oia and Fira, making for a very different Santorini experience.

9. Akrotiri Lighthouse

The Santorini lighthouse is at the end of the Akrotiri peninsula in the south-western corner of the island. On many other Greek islands it would be the first place to go to watch the sunset, with a great view over the Aegean Sea and, depending on which angle you’re looking at it, some distant islets.

But this is Santorini and, to be honest, the sunset here wouldn’t be a patch on one in Oia or Fira. It’s a pleasant spot, worth dropping by to see if you visit nearby Mesa Pigadia – also known as Black Beach Santorini . But for sunset, it won’t take your breath away like the Santorini caldera sunsets.

If you visit Santorini, even for one day, do all within your powers to stay overnight and enjoy a Santorini sunset.

Even after 40 years of travelling, seeing a sunset in Santorini for the first time had me tingling with anticipation, like the first time I saw the Eiffel Tower, Venice or Sydney Harbour.

Santorini is overtouristed at the height of summer, but you don’t have to venture far to avoid the crowds and soak in one of the most magical experiences you’ll have anywhere in Europe or, for that matter, the world.

A Private Catamaran Cruise to the hot springs and around the Santorini caldera is one of my favorite things to do in Greece.

Boat Tours of the Santorini Caldera & Volcano A boat tour of the caldera is among my very favorite things to do in Santorini . Unforgettable and a must-do! Don’t worry too much about which tour you book – they’re all good. Emphasis should be on getting something booked in advance before they sell out for your dates. Day tour or sunset tour? There is not a huge difference between the two types of tours beyond the time of day. A day tour/cruise usually runs from 9 or 10 am to 3 pm, serves lunch, and has lots of swimming. A sunset tour/cruise runs from about 3 pm to 8 or 9 pm, serves dinner, has a little less swimming than the day tour, and typically finishes by sailing beneath the Oia cliffs to watch the sunset. Private boat tour or small group tour? I’ll be honest, I definitely prefer the private. You get more input on where to go, how long to spend at different spots, what music to listen to, and (sometimes) where you get dropped off at the end. Yes, private tours are more expensive but I’d be shocked if anyone regretted the money they spent once they’re on the boat. The description says, “all you can eat and drink”, is that really true? Yes, but with some differences between tours. The private tours bring the drinks out before you’ve left the harbor. The less-expensive tours hold-off for a bit until the boat gets to the first destination and you’ve had a swim, which might be an hour to two, but after that, it’s an open bar. There are no ferries to the volcano. The only way to do a volcano tour is to do a boat tour. You can not access the volcano unless you’re part of an organized (private or group) tour. The Jet Ski Tour To The Volcano is amazing. All boat tours have great views of the caldera cliffs. Cruise options include: hike the volcano; swim in the hot springs (you can always stay on the boat if you wish); visit Thirassia and explore its villages; stop at Red Beach and White Beach to swim and snorkel; eat lunch or dinner on board, and watch the sunset below Oia. The 8 Best Boat Tours in Santorini

All boat tours below provide meals onboard and have hotel pick-up and drop-off (which doesn’t sound like a big deal when you’re booking but makes the day so much easier and hassle-free when the time arrives). Also, all tours enter the caldera, sail to or near the volcano, and have plenty of swimming and snorkeling . Food on the tours ranges from surprisingly good to great. And the boats are very generous with their alcohol – after every tour, I ask myself how they make money when they’re so lavish with the food and drink. 1. Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Cruise (2:45pm departure) or Day Cruise (9:45am departure). Awesome cruise around the volcano, staring up at the cliffs of the caldera. You stop at a few beaches for swimming and snorkeling, then swim in the hot springs near the volcano, eat a huge lunch or dinner, and finally see the sunset from the cliffs below Oia (for the sunset cruise). Lots of fun! If this tour is fully booked then try the Caldera Cruise or Santorini Sunset Cruise . 2. Private Catamaran Cruise

Wonderful private cruise of the caldera. Great food and plenty of flexibility on what to see and where to sail. Ideal for a luxury honeymoon cruise, small group, or family. The day tour departs at 10:30am, the sunset-tour departs at 3:30pm. Both tours last 5 hours. Be prepared to be insanely pampered. If the above tour is fully booked – which is common from June to September – then try the Private Sunset Cruise . 3. Santorini Day Cruise Wonderful day tour with great food and friendly staff (10:00am departure). You can’t go more than 5 minutes without someone asking if you want another beer or glass of wine. But it’s far from a drinking cruise – the emphasis is on swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the top of the catamaran. You’ll visit a few beaches and the hot springs and have plenty of time to explore the sights of the caldera. (I did this boat tour last summer and it was awesome.) 4. Private Cruise on a Motor Yacht This is an incredible way to see the Santorini cliffs and stare up at the villages perched on the caldera’s edge. The motor yachts allow for much more freedom in getting around the volcanic islands and seeing the caldera from every different angle. On a catamaran, you feel like you’re on vacation. On the motor yachts it feels a little more like you’re on an adventure (though there’s still plenty of swimming, snorkeling, eating, and drinking). 5. Volcano Boat Tour Much less expensive and with a larger boat and group of people but still very fun. This tour is almost the opposite of the Sunset Catamaran Cruise. You get the volcano, hot springs (with swimming), and a visit to Thirassia island – but no beaches or going outside the caldera, and no sunset. This is the cheapest boat tour of the caldera. 6. Santorini Fishing Tour This tour is very well done and lots of fun. Boat around the Santorini waters on a local fishing boat. Fresh seafood lunch or dinner served on board (eat what you catch and empty from the nets). The daytime tour is best for families and serious fishermen. The sunset tour is best for couples. 7. Santorini Jet Ski Tour Not a boat tour, obviously, but super fun. We’ve done a couple of these tours (it’s always a small group of 2 to 4) to the volcano and they rank as some of the most exhilarating activities we’ve ever done. (That’s my son in the photo, 14 years old at the time.) The perspective you get as you ride through the caldera is awe-inspiring. A boat travels with the tour and is there for any emergencies or if the water gets too rough for beginner riders. The South Coast Tour is fun, but to see the volcano and caldera (which I recommend) you need to do the Volcano Tour or Extreme Volcano Tour. I would be shocked if anyone did this tour and at its conclusion didn’t yell, that was awesome!!! 8. Sea Kayaking Excursion A fun and easy-going way to explore the Santorini coastline. The Morning Tour and Evening Tour stick to the south coast of the island. The Round The Lighthouse Tour goes into the caldera and offers incredible views of the caldera cliffs.

About Santorini Dave

Dave: When you go swimming on these boat trips (especially one going to hot springs), where can you keep your valuables, e.g. your camera? It would be terrible to lose your photos. I am a trustworthy person, but wonder what other people do to avoid any problems. You can’t swim with a camera.

Honestly, it’s never been anything I’ve considered. It’s usually a small group of people and there’s never an issue with leaving your stuff. I suppose you could leave it with one of the staff, but I expect they’d just laugh and say, this is Greece, your stuff is fine, go swim.

The boat tours are typically pretty calm. Most time is in the protected caldera waters and if the sea is really rough the tour will be cancelled, in any case. The boat tours are definitely less rough than the worst ferry rides, so if you’re ok on the ferry you’ll be fine on a boat tour.

There are no shorter tours on Santorini. Though if you booked a private boat tour (expensive, obviously) they would return you to port whenever you wanted. I will say the 5 hours goes very quickly. The only other option (as far as getting on a boat) is the ferry to Thirassia or the water taxis along the south coast beaches.

We are visiting Santorini the first week of November, will the water be too cold for these awesome excursions with swimming in hot springs and volcanoes? And if it is, is it still worth doing?

Yes, it likely will be too cold to swim for most (though not impossible for the bold). And also yes, it’s definitely still worth doing a boat tour even if you don’t swim. Views and perspective from the water are incredible any time of year.

I have several posts on this site about where to stay on Santorini and best towns and beaches. Take a look. In general, I do not recommend day trips to other islands. With the ferry schedules, it’s difficult to get more than a few hours on neighboring islands when you do a day trip. It’s much better to pack your bags and move to whatever island you want to see.

I’m going to Santorini and Mykonos for 8 days. Do you think it’s worth doing a boat tour on each island? I’ll only have 3 days in Mykonos.

Definitely do a boat tour in Santorini. For Mykonos it’s more of a toss-up. (If greek cooking sounds interesting to you, I’d probably do the cooking course instead of a boat tour.)

Pretty much all tours have swimming but you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. And while others are swimming you can just relax on deck and gaze at the views. The tour carries on even when some are swimming so it’s not as if you just sit there on your own, bored – there’s still plenty of fun on board the boat.

Do you think boat tours are fine during winter season? Otherwise, do you have any recommendations for winter excursions?

If by winter, you mean December, January, and February then there will be few (if any) boat tours running and I don’t think I’d recommend them. If, instead, you might be visiting in March and get some good weather then they’ll be fine (though still not many running). A wine tour is a great year-round thing to do in Santorini. And walking the Fira-Oia path.

For the boat tours, do you need to swim to the beach or is walkable to the shore once they dock as close as they can? We’re not great swimmers and if that’s requirement we’ll have to book another boat tour.

For tours that visit the volcano, the boat will dock and you’ll be able to walk off without getting wet. For tours that visit the hot springs, the boat will anchor about 30 to 50 meters from the hot spring area and you’ll need to swim to the warm water. Otherwise, most tours stop near a beach for swimming and snorkeling but don’t really directly visit the beach. You’re fine staying on the boat and viewing the scenery (which is great) while others swim. On most tours about half the people swim and half remain on the boat, so it’s unlikely you’re the only one left on the boat while everyone else is off playing.

Will the boat tour to the volcano and hot spring be suitable for those who get sea sick?

Generally, it’s usually pretty calm. Depending on where you depart from most of the tour will be inside the protected caldera. Catamarans are more stable than single-hull boats.

We are taking our kids to Santorini the last week of March. What private boat tour would you recommend to take for the volcano tour?

It’s not so much what is the best tour but more what is available. As the time grows closer (February or early March) search Getyourguide for Santorini Boat Tours and choose the most appropriate.

There’s another Spiridakos boat tour that is excellent and very similar to the private tour I’ve listed above. It has departures of 10:30 (day tour) and 3:30 (sunset tour).

My fiancee and I are going to be in Santorini in August for our honeymoon and are definitely booking one of the boat tours, but we just can’t decide on whether to do a day or sunset voyage. There’s not a huge difference: the day tour has more swimming time, the sunset tour has more evening hours. Be sure to take a change of clothes for the sunset tour (it can get chilly at night). The sunset tour has a later starting date which allows you to do something in the morning.

I’ll be staying in santoniri for a day this November. Arrive Friday morning to either Katikies or Kirini hotel, and then leave late Saturday afternoon to Athens. (Though I have to check out from my hotel by 12pm). Would you recommend a boat tour? If yes, which would it be. My issue mainly time and not price.

Both the 5-Hour Caldera Cruise at Sunset (3pm departure) and the 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise (9:30am and 2:30pm departure) run into late November. Both are great tours.

I am about to book the semi-private boat tour and we are going the last week of June into July (which, from what I understand, is a very crowded time of year). Do you think that the day of the week that we book the day tour matters much (Friday vs. Saturday vs. Monday)? There’s no difference between days of the week and busyness. Do whatever works best.

If you can only do one do the boat tour but if time allows do both, as they each have a very different feel. It’s a more surreal feeling being in a kayak at water-level looking up at the huge cliffs (depending where your tour goes). But you do get to do more when on the boat tour – it’s a more complete introduction to the caldera.

I am looking to book the sunset catamaran trip this summer. In the check out it asks for passport information. I just wanted to check this was a normal request/it’s safe to provide my information to this company?

Yes, it’s safe and secure. The information is requested by the port authority but it’s never used. You could put in your correct name and then just make up a letter/number combination for the passport number. They’ll never know and never look at it.

We are going to Santorini for one day in July via fast ferry from Crete. Are there any shorter cruises around Santorini that we can do in that window of time that we will be there?

No, sorry. There’s no boat tour (that I know of) that would get you back in time to get your return ferry to Crete.

Not worth it. If you want to visit Milos stay at least 2 nights and 1 full day.

Yes, they’ll be running in May (usually start in April) and you’ll be able to swim. But water can still be a bit chilly. And note, hot springs are not “hot” just warm.

I don’t know of any boat tours that take in caves. And don’t know of any Santorini to Mykonos tours either. There are much better islands to visit on a day tour from Santorini. Ios for beaches, Naxos for inland sightseeing. (That said, I typically don’t recommend doing a day trip from Santorini as time is much better spent on Santorini than on a boat. If you do want to see another island then stay a night or two to see it best.)

I am looking for a beach hopping trip in Santorini to visit the Black Beach, Red Beach, White beach etc. tour starts at 4PM or 5PM. How much for 2 people?

For these beaches best to do it yourself with this boat from Akrotiri . It will be 10€ per person round trip. Can also take a different boat back to Kamari (if you were taking the bus, if you’ve got your own car then you’ll need to return to Akrotiri). Last boat is about 6:30pm (but double check) so you won’t have a lot of time.

The single biggest difference is whether the tour goes through the day or in the late afternoon (and gets the sunset). The 5-hour small group tour is cheaper than the other two but will have a few more people on the boat and the food served is not quite as robust as for the semi-private and sunset catamaran cruises. More appetizers than the full meal you get on the other two. Fewer drinks are served as well. All 3 are great and you’ll love whatever you choose. My advice is to first decide whether you want the sunset or more sun/swimming.

Would like to do a private boat tour of caldera. It’s our honeymoon and want a super special day out on the water with food, wine, swimming, snorkeling, and the hot springs. Maybe take in the sunset too, but as you say, it’s a choice between more swimming/sunshine and sunset/evening so not sure what we’ll decide. What’s the best tour to book for our needs?

The Private Half-Day Catamaran Cruise of Santorini is simply awesome. It is expensive but I’m sure you’re expecting that already. There’s a morning departure (for lots of swimming and sunshine) and an afternoon departure (for the sunset – but still plenty of time to swim too). Food is top notch. If it’s within your budget this is the one you want. (If you do the sunset tour bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimming stuff and enjoy the sunset without a chill.)

There are no ferries to the volcano or hot springs. You have to do a tour or a chartered/private tour. There are small boats that do regular routes to the neighboring island of Thirassia (that forms the western side of the caldera) but this isn’t the volcano.

We are looking for the best sunset tour around Santorini. Our only concern is that we also want lots of swimming. If we do the sunset tour will we have enough time to swim?

Watching the sunset in Santorini is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Greece, and one of the top items to tick off your Europe travel bucket list. Depending on your ship’s departure time, you may be able to enjoy a Santorini shore excursion with sunset views , even when visiting as a cruise stop.

A sunset cruise is hands-down the most romantic and iconic way to watch the Santorini sunset.

As your boat bobs gently in the crystal clear Aegean Sea, you’ll have a front-row seat to the golden sun dipping into the water, casting its glow over the sea and the island’s villages.

Most cruises take you past the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the caldera before finding an ideal spot to drop anchor and take in the views. You can sip cocktails and enjoy a delicious Greek meal onboard as the sky erupts in a riot of color.

Some of the best sunset cruise companies in Santorini include Sailing Santorini, Imagine Tour and Travel, and Santorini Sailing Center.

Private and semi-private cruises are more expensive but guarantee a more intimate and exclusive experience.

The village of Oia, situated on the northern tip of Santorini’s crescent-shaped caldera, is postcard-perfect with its cobblestone alleys, white washed houses, and blue-domed churches. The ruins of Oia Castle provide the ideal romantic backdrop as the sun melts into the Aegean Sea.

Crowds flock to Oia each evening to snap that iconic Santorini sunset photo I’ve posted above, so be prepared to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot.

The best places to watch the sunset in Oia are next to the old castle ruins, on the main pedestrian walkway through the village leading up to the iconic blue-domed churches, or from a cliffside restaurant like Ambrosia or Kastro.

Stop at a local wine bar like Melenio or Sphinx Wine Restaurant to enjoy the sunset over a glass or two of Assyrtiko wine – Santorini’s famous grape variety.

Imerovigli boasts hotels and villas with pools, bath tubs and decks to view the sunset in style, sipping wine and enjoying life

The elevated village of Imerovigli sits on top of the cliff looking directly out over the volcanic caldera. Its incredible vantage point means you can watch the sun sink behind the island of Thirasia – one of the most spellbinding Santorini sunset views. Due to its higher altitude, the sunset can be enjoyed a bit longer from Imerovigli before the sun dips completely out of sight.

Some of the best sunset viewing spots in Imerovigli are from the luxury hotels like Grace Santorini and Auberge resorts which have infinity pools and rooftop bars perfectly aligned for caldera views. Have dinner or cocktails at the laid-back Skiza Restaurant or swanky Anemomilos Restaurant to soak up epic sunset panoramas. Stop at the famous Church of Anargyri with its blue-domed roof which makes for a perfect sunset photo opp.

Firostefani offers beautiful views of the caldera even after the sunset

Neighbouring Imerovigli, the cliffside village of Firostefani boasts similarly stunning sunset vistas over the volcano and caldera. Without the bigger crowds of Oia, Firostefani has a more peaceful, relaxed vibe at sunset time. It may lack some of the quaint charm of other island villages, but sunset views surely impress with uninterrupted views of the colorful cliffside homes of Imerovigli and Akrotiri in the distance.

Head to Aktaion restaurant for sunset dining on their beautiful terrace or stop at Tango Champagne and Wine bar which hosts nightly viewings accompanied by smooth jazz or classical guitar music. The pool deck at Vedema resort is a sleek and stylish spot to soak up the sunset as you lounge next to the infinity pool sipping chilled cocktails.

Located on the southern tip of Santorini, Akrotiri lighthouse is one of the most popular places for panoramic caldera views year-round, especially at sunset. Hike up or drive to the small white lighthouse perched on the edge of the rugged cliffs for sublime views over the entire semi-circular caldera, the island of Thirassia, and the perfectly-aligned sister islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni. Watch as the red and golden light blankets the volcanic landscape as the sun sinks below the horizon.

The long stretch of black sand at Perivolos Beach is lesser-known as a prime sunset watching locale but offers up unique sea-level panoramas. As the reddish-orange hue spreads across the sky and reflects off the crystalling seawater, you really get a sense of the sheer cliffsides and crescent shape of Santorini island from beach-level. Walk to the far southern end of the shore for uninterrupted sunset vistas.

Many of the beachfront tavernas and bars have happy hours lined up perfectly with sunset. From candle-lit wooden decks to cushioned lounges, breezy beach shacks like Tranquilo serve up boozy cocktails best paired with a fiery sky and peaceful sea at your feet.

For dining options try Mamacita’s, Ostraco or Mario No Name restaurant. Or grab a towel on the black sand beach and watch with a beer in hand.

The medieval settlement of Skaros Rock is an atmospheric hidden gem to experience a quiet, crowd-free sunset perched along the northern cliffs. You’ll have postcard-worthy views looking south over Imerovigli and Fira as the orange glow blankets the village homes. Bring good footwear for climbing and scrambling over rocks and uneven paths.

The hike up takes about 15 minutes from Imerovigli. Be extremely cautious near the cliff edges and supervise children at all times. Time it so you are at the peak for the final moments when the yellows and oranges stretch across the sky before fading to pink. For unreal landscape views as day turns to night, it’s one of the most unique sunset spots on Santorini island.

The small traditional village of Pyrgos is centrally located near the highest point of Santorini island. Most tourists don’t make it here which means its cobblestone alleyways and blue-domed churches are delightfully peaceful and crowd-free come sunset time. Sit beside the old Venetian castle ruins to soak up sublime caldera views as the sky bursts into technicolour.

For front row seats, head to the village’s fanciest restaurant Franco’s Cafe which boasts panoramic terrace seating overlooking the island. The most vibrant pinks and purples often spread across the sky for a good 20 minutes making it a spectacular backdrop as you dine on fine Greek cuisine paired with local wines.

Nearby hilltops also make glorious sunset viewpoints over the patchwork of fields and vineyards.

The archaeological site of Ancient Thira sits high upon Mesa Vouno mountain south of Kamari providing supreme sunset watching opportunities. As golden hour sets in, Ancient Thira’s ruins of temples and homes glow under warm light with epic 360 degree views.

The ancient city-state was founded as early as the 8th century BC before being destroyed by an earthquake in the 7th century AD. Today you can still see intact buildings and staircases plus crumbled walls and streets that once formed this prosperous town. Entry costs only €2 and viewing continues until 30 minutes before the site closes.

Be prepared for crowds jockeying for the iconic shot framed through the Terrace Gate.

Santorini is one of those idyllic travel destinations people dream about for years. This Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea is a top contender for your travel bucket list, boasting clear blue waters, impeccable beaches, and dramatic views.

When it comes to watching the sun go down, Santorini sunsets are arguably the ones to beat ( Santorini wineries are also pretty great). The lava pebbles scattered along the beach glisten under the Grecian sun, and you can bask in the warm sunlight from one of the many cliffside spots on the island.

Santorini Sunsets: When to Visit for the Best Ones

Santorini sees its ups and downs in terms of the weather and the crowds. So, it may help to know what to expect before you embark on your island vacation. More and more people are going to Santorini during the low season when the crowds are sparser.

Keep in mind that the weather will be more cold and rainy during these winter months (December – March). It doesn’t get too cold on the island, though, with temperatures averaging about 18°C in winter.

If you’re ready to contend with thousands of tourists, Santorini’s high season offers splendid weather conditions. The high season’s peak happens in summer (June – September) but can start as early as April.

Of course, summer is the best time for swimming on the famous black beaches , but you can enjoy touring the island in the winter, too.

What’s excellent about Santorini is that all of the best locations face the ocean basin. So, you won’t have any trouble locating the sunset each evening, especially if you visit one of the sunset spots on this list.

In general, though, you’ll want to be facing the ocean to the west to get the best view.

In winter, the sunsets happen as early as 17:30 in the evening. So, make sure you’ve got your glass of wine in hand by that time to enjoy the view. Sunsets happen a lot later during the summer months, though.

In August, for example, you can expect the sun to go down as late as 20:30.

1. Hike Skaros Rock

Skaros Rock is a popular destination for hikers and photographers. If you’re looking for an excellent view, this rock formation protrudes out over the Aegean sea at a height of about 20 meters.

Hiking Skaros Rock is an unforgettable experience, with the houses of Imerovigli village growing smaller and smaller behind you as you ascend this unique mountain.

From the height of Skaros, you can see the magnificent turquoise ocean waters below. You’ll also see the two Kameni Islands wrapping around the basin in the distance.

Sunset from Skaros Rock feels like being at the edge of the world, with the entire Santorini caldera behind you and the ocean bleeding into the horizon before you. There are also some curious abandoned houses along the hiking trail, for those interested in Santorini’s obscurities.

After you’ve bathed in the sunset, you’ll also find Saint John’s chapel on your way down the hill. This quaint church is built on the caldera to your right – another stellar photo opportunity for the photographers and influencers out there.

Hiking Skaras Rock will take you anywhere between two to five hours, depending on which path you choose.

2. Eat fresh seafood at Ammoudi Bay

If you fancy a waterside dining experience, Ammoudi Bay is the perfect place to enjoy a meal as the sun settles over the ocean. This small port is lined with seafood restaurants that sit right on the water’s edge.

Catamarans dock is a mere stone’s throw from the dining areas, so you’ll feel truly immersed in Santorini’s seaside culture.

Ammoudi Bay is rife with activity, with boat tours arriving and departing throughout the day. You’ll also see tourists and locals alike weave through the boats and dock bridges. Enjoy a glass of wine or a plate of oysters – most of the seafood served is fresh off the boat.

This area is a hotspot for tourists, so you may have to wait a while to get a table. But the view from Ammoudi Bay is well worth it.

There is also a fantastic cliff-jumping spot just around the corner. To get there, walk to the last restaurant on the strip and follow the footpath around the cove.

You’ll find a 6-meter cliff you can dive off, straight into the Meditteranean waters. This spot is also a great location to take a photo of the sunset.

For delectable fresh seafood, try Dimitri’s Ammoudi Taverna . They serve fantastic lobster, seafood pasta, and some outstanding vegetarian and vegan options, too. Book ahead and ask for a table on the first row so you’ll be right on the water for the show.

NB: Ammoudi sits at water level. There is a car park nearby or there are a decent number of quite steep stairs that will take you into the heart of Oia. If you’re a bit concerned about stairs book your taxi ahead of time for your departure from Ammoudi after the sunset or dinner.

3. Visit the Charming Oia Village

Oia (pronounced “ee-a”) is Santorini’s most famous village. This coastal town on the northwestern tip of the island is like a postcard come to life. You’ll find a maze of whitewashed houses rising out of the clifftops, as well as a sweeping view of the island over the horizon.

Oia is always brimming with tourists, and when you see twilight descend on the village, you’ll understand why. The warm yellow light of sunset seeps between Oia’s narrow streets, bathing the white houses in a buttery hue.

Oia truly lives up to the phrase “golden hour” with a dependable magical atmosphere visiting the village each evening.

One of the best sunset views is seen from Oia Castle, also known as Fort Londsa. This 15th-century citadel offers a unique sunset experience. You’ll be able to see the Grecian sun setting over Ammoudi Bay from the castle ruins.

Be sure to get there in the late afternoon to secure the best spot possible, as Fort Londsa is usually buzzing with people.

Oia Castle is one of the most impressive Greek landmarks , and definitely worth a visit for the unique architectural landscape.

4. Enjoy a Santorini Sunset Cruise

Santorini offers an abundance of sunset cruises – one of the more luxurious ways to enjoy the island’s incredible views. As fantastic as sunset looks from the island, you cannot beat the pink and red sun rays twinkling over the ocean waters.

If you’re lucky enough to enjoy a Santorini catamaran tour , the sunset view will take your breath away.

Depending on what tour you choose, you can enjoy your view from a private catamaran, or share the experience with a few other travellers. Either way, the view from the water is impeccable.

5. Go Wine-tasting at Santo Winery

Santo Winery is one of the most scenic spots in all of Santorini, thanks to the spacious terrace that looks out over the caldera and surrounding islands. You can visit this hillside vineyard for a wine-tasting experience, a winery tour, or some light bites at the scenic cafe.

Santo has delicious cheese, meat, and olive platters, which you can pair with the finest local Santorinian wines.

Santo Winery offers a unique cultural excursion for those interested in the island’s viticulture history. Santorini has a strong agricultural tradition that dates back to the volcanic eruptions that made the island what it is today.

The soil’s distinctive texture, which includes lava, volcanic ash, and pumice stone, contributes to the local wines’ quality and flavour profiles. One of Santo’s professional sommeliers will guide you through the vineyard’s best wines so you can taste the history for yourself.

The vineyard isn’t all that’s on offer at Santo. You can also peak at the tomato processing factory on-site. Tomato cultivation is another of Santorini’s most famous exports, dating back to the 18th century.

The factory was built in 1952, and the beautiful architecture has been restored to its original glory today. This also happens to be the only tomato processing factory that still operates on the island.

A wine tour is a fantastic thing to do whilst on Santorini. In peak season most wine tour companies run two tours per day – one from about midday and one to cover the sunset.

I took my wine tours with Santorini Wine Adventure and I would highly recommend them. My guide and driver was extremely knowledgeable about Santorini and wine in general plus great company.

6. Akrotiri Lighthouse

This lighthouse on the tip of the south west of Santorini was built in 1892. It is a wonderful spot to watch the sunset in Santorini and the lighthouse itself makes for a great silhouette in the foreground of a photograph. There isn’t much space here – the car park is small and Akrotiri Lighthouse is at the end of a skinny street – but the views are fantastic.

This small village in the hills of Santorini has protection from tourism and a more authentic feel than other areas in Santorini. Head to the ruins of Pyrgos Castle or St George Church or best of all Franco’s Cafe to enjoy the sunset in Pyrgos.

8. Imerovigli

This pretty village is about halfway between Thira and Oia on the west side of Santorini. The view from Imerovigli allows visitors to watch the sun drop over the small island of Thirasia. Head up to Skaros, the castle in Thirasia, for some great views or enjoy the view with a drink at one of Imerovigli’s cafes.

9. Thirasia

Or why not head to the island of Thirasia itself? This small, rocky island is west of Santorini and its hilltops have fantastic views of the sun setting over Santorini itself. The best views are of Oia and some of the small towns on Santorini’s west coast. There is some accommodation on Thirasia but not a lot. Make sure you book ahead or don’t miss the last ferry back to Santorini.

Fira is Santorini’s major town and it is generally a busy place. There are a large range of rooftop bars and restaurants in Fira which offer great views of the sunset whilst enjoying some Greek wine and calamari. Try the PK Cocktail Bar or the Tropical Bar. 11. Prophet Elias Monastery

Prophet Elias Monastery sits at the top of Santorini and is 565 metres above sea level. The monastery was built in 1711 and unfortunately, it was somewhat damaged in the earthquake in 1956.

There is still quite a bit to see although the inside and facilities will be closed at sunset. But the view won’t be so head up here to see one of the widest sunset vistas in Santorini.

12. Nea Kameni Volcano

This now dormant volcano is a popular Santorini day trip . From the crater, it is a 400 metre climb to reach the top viewing platform and an amazing Santorini sunset view.

13. Perissa Beach

Perissa Beach is located near the base of Mt Mesa Vouna and is a relatively short taxi or bus ride from Fira. It is one of the best-known black sand beaches on Santorini. There are sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach so you can relax and enjoy the stunning sunset whilst reclining. Or head into the water for a sunset swim.

How to Get To Santorini

If you’re coming from outside the Greek islands the nearest airport to Ios is Santorini.

I would very much recommend booking a car to pick you up at Santorini airport – whether you are heading to the ferry port or into Santorini. Believe it or not, I was told that there are only 36 taxis on the island of Santorini. That isn’t a typo – 36 taxis.

I had my hotel organise my airport pick up (if you are heading straight to the ferry port (click here for taxi options ).

If you are heading straight to the ferry port, pre-booking your airport pick up is pretty much mandatory if you want a smooth journey.

And I have a fantastic boutique hotel for you to stay at in Santorini – which has amazing views of the sunset – and a large deck area designed to help you enjoy that view. I stayed at the Anteliz Suites and absolutely loved it. This charming Santorini boutique hotel is perched on the top of Fira.

My room at Anteliz Suite Santorini was beautiful. It was a nice size and simply decorated in blue and white. The furniture and fixtures of this Santorini boutique hotel were of high quality.

I virtually didn’t leave this lovely hotel whilst I was there so this is a strong recommendation.

On my second trip to Santorini, I stayed at Mr and Mrs White Santorni . This charming boutique hotel sits on the caldera and has fantastic views. It is very modern in design but combined with the traditional style of the island.

The design theme is black and white which works very well on this often blue and white and oh so bright island. Breakfast is served above the main reception and also provides fantastic views. The buffet includes hot food and I highly recommend the spanokopitas. Greek or traditional-style omelettes are also available.

The hotel has a pool area and a second area for a smaller pool and jacuzzi. It is a slight maze of rooms and arches and outdoor corridors but this all gives a nice sense of privacy. The staff were very friendly – particularly at breakfast where they remembered our coffee order each morning!

Location wise, Mr and Mrs White is perfect. It is a quite flat approx 10 minute walk into the heart of Oia.

Oia is the most popular place for the iconic Santorini sunset framed by the blue domes and windmills. This means that sunsets in Oia are not for the faint-hearted as the village is flooded with tourists. The coveted spot around the Castle of St Nicholas becomes a sea of spectators with their cameras and tripods.

Escape from the crowds by walking to the east along the old castle walls and towards the churches. Remember to check the sunset time as it changes according to the seasons, and bring water and snacks for your sunset excursion. To indulge in a more luxurious experience, make a reservation for a romantic dinner at the restaurants facing the ocean.

3. Akrotiri Lighthouse

Located in the southwestern part of Santorini, the historical Akrotiri Lighthouse offers a serene viewing experience. Here you can spend an idyllic evening far away from the crowds. You’ll need a car to get to this remote area but the breathtaking sunset is worth the hassle. There’s no public access to the lighthouse, so find a comfortable spot near the lighthouse or on the hill behind the structure for an unobstructed view of the sunset.

While the island’s biggest town is not as well-known as Oia for sunsets, Fira is a convenient place to catch the golden hour if you’re spending the night in the village. Tip: Avoid the crowds by going towards the promenade wall and down the stairs where the donkeys roam or head up to the elevated settlement of Firostefani .

The highest village on the Greek island, Pyrgos is a hidden gem to catch the epic Santorini sunset. 6. Imerovigli

Imerovigli lies between its two bustling neighbors Oia and Fira. This clifftop village is an underrated lookout point as it’s more secluded, thus offering an intimate sunset experience. In this article I have outlined everything you need to know about doing a boat tour in Santorini, including insights from my personal experience, reviews for the best tours, what they include, what to pack for the day, what you’ll see during the tour and more.

The “caldera” of Santorini is one of the most unique landscapes in the world, and discovering it by boat is the best way to do so.

Sailing past the iconic coastline of Santorini, with its iconic white houses perched at the top of tall black cliffs, is a jaw-dropping experience to say the least. Add to it a catamaran sunset cruise and hot springs swim, and you have a winner!

There are loads of different Santorini boat tours that you can join, from cheaper tours on bigger boats to luxury catamaran cruises. In this article I outline the pros and cons of each.

About the “caldera” and Nea Kameni volcano boat tours

Easily one of the best ways to see Santorini is to head out to the high seas on a boat tour.

Not only does this offer up some of the most iconic views of the island – you get to see the real scale of those giant cliffs – but many boat tours in Santorini also offer you the chance to get to destinations and experiences that you may not be able to reach otherwise.

These are the hot springs on Palea Kameni, the famous Nea Kameni volcano, and seeing the sunset from the water instead of from a busy street in Oia.

Basically, there are definitely a few good reasons as to why opting for a Santorini boat tour is totally worth it.

Not only that, but you get to spend the whole day being taken around to all of these amazing places without worrying how you’re going to get there.

All you have to do is make sure you turn up to the boat on time, and then you can leave things safely in the hands of those who are running the tour.

You might not even have to worry about what you’re going to eat or drink, as many tours include this as part of the package, from open bars to barbecue dinners.

The tour I went for, the Volcanic Islands Cruise with Hot Springs Visit , was pretty comprehensive, it included a lot of stuff and was pretty affordable, too.

The tour starts from Athinios port. Here you hop aboard a large boat – it almost looks like a pirate ship, with wooden decks and big sails. Kind of cool, but some people might find it a bit tacky.

The tour is usually quite busy, and there are quite a lot of people. I would recommend arriving as early as possible in order to secure a good spot on the boat before you head off.

First, you’ll begin to make your way out across the Aegean Sea surrounding the island.

You’ll get to stop off at traditional Greek villages, embark on a Santorini hot springs tour, swim in the sea and soak up a sunset (if you want), too.

The first step on your journey with this tour will be Nea Kameni. Measuring about two kilometres around, this island actually sits within the Santorini caldera itself and is actually the peak of a volcano.

Don’t worry: It hasn’t erupted for over 65 years. But this volcanic landscape gives the island a dramatic feel that’s perfect for exploring.

You can even take some time to hike the path all the way to the active crater of the volcano.

It’s a semi-steep hike, and takes about 20 minutes, so you’ll need a moderate level of fitness to get up there (especially if it’s a hot day).

The guides at this point will tell you some information about the volcano as well as the general history of the area.

Hot springs of Palea Kameni

Then it’s time to do some chilling out as you get back on board the boat and head to the nearby Palea Kameni.

Another volcanic island, the name of this one translates to “Old Burnt Island”, and it was formed after an eruption in 1570.

It’s a beautiful place in its own right, made that much more beautiful by the fact that it has its own geothermal springs.

Yep, here you can soak in hot springs warmed by volcanic activity. You get about half an hour or so to soak in the hot springs.

Lunch in Therasia

After a relaxing time in the hot springs (and also the chance to swim in the sea), it’s time to get back on the boat before you’re whisked to Therasia.

Home to around 150 people, this tiny island was also formed by volcanic activities. It’s often described as a hidden gem, and it certainly feels that way when you’re here.

You can really feel the traditional culture and rich history of the area as you explore the island.

Exploring the harbour of Therasia in Greece

After exploring the coastal part of Therasia, you’ll have the option of either walking up the winding stairs or taking a donkey up to the village of Manalos.

It’s a picturesque postcard of a town, complete with white-washed walls, cave houses, old-world tavernas and blue-topped churches, all tucked away along cute and quiet streets.

In total, you’ll have about two hours on Therasia; many people choose to eat their lunch at this stage, what with the many tavernas around the harbour.

I’d recommend bringing your own snorkel, if you have one, as the water around Therasia is super clear.

Sail past Oia and the Santorini coastline

While on the way from the harbour to Nea Kameni we went straight to the volcanic island, on the way back to the harbour we did a longer cruise, sailing just under Oia and the coastline of Santorini.

While it may seem something simple, it was actually one of the most incredible moments of the day. Seeing the 300m high cliffs of the Caldera up close, with those iconic white houses perched on top, is simply breathtaking.

Our boat headed straight for Oia, and then gradually made its way back to the harbour, sailing past Imerovigli and Fira. It’s a great way to end the boat tour.

At this point in the Santorini boat tour , you have a choice. Once you arrive in the harbour, you can either wind up your tour now and have them transfer you to your hotel, or you could opt to add on the Oia sunset.

Although it does seem tempting, you should note that adding this on can make the end of you day quite rushed.

Once you get back to the port, you’ll be transferred by bus to Oia, where they’ll give you some time to wander and see the sunset, but the meeting time for the return transfer is usually set for right after sunset .

That means you won’t have any time to enjoy that magical moment after the sun has gone down, the crowds have left, the sky starts getting dark and Oia lights up for the night.

Given the choice, I would definitely prefer to see the Oia sunset myself, and stay until well after the sun has gone down. The atmosphere changes and the tour groups go home – it’s really lovely.

All in all, this tour is well rounded and takes in just about enough to make the day never feel overly rushed, or lacking.

The guides are friendly and knowledgeable; they’re also helpful and speak multiple languages, which is always a plus. There’s also plenty of opportunity to explore at your own pace in each destination.

One of the major bonuses about this particular tour is its affordability, especially compared with other Santorini boat tours. It’s not a fancy catamaran sunset cruise, but for the price, it includes a lot.

However, if you want to do something a little different, you certainly can.

The tour I did is definitely on the cheaper side, and is great for budget travellers, but if you want to do something a little more fancy, then there definitely are some options for you.

For example, you could embark on a sunset cruise around Santorini in a catamaran. These sorts of tours are sold as a more vip experience, with a smaller group, whereas the one I went on had more people and on a bigger boat.

That said, the tour I did and described above is also more complete .

It goes to a lot more places, whereas something like a catamaran cruise in Santorini usually focuses more on the atmosphere, the food and the drink – less so on the sightseeing, and will take you to less spots.

But if that’s what you’re looking for in a boat tour of Santorini , then cast your eyes below and take your pick.

If you’re looking for a truly wow experience, this is it. With a maximum of 20 guests, this luxury catamaran cruise will provide you with an unforgettable memory.

They have both an early morning and an afternoon option that you can choose from. The afternoon option is pricier, but it includes the sunset at Oia, and in my opinion is well worth the extra.

Santorini has its own international airport
