Rider Qualifiers Announced for 2024 PBR Pendleton Whisky Tour Finals in Corpus Christi, Texas

Launching the iconic Buc Days festival, the 2024 PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals will take over Corpus Christi, Texas, and American Bank Center Arena May 3-4

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (May 1, 2024) – Ahead of the 2024 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals, on May 3-4 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the organization today announced the 44-rider field that will compete at the expansion series’ season-culminating event, vying for the title of Velocity Tour Champion and the accompanying $50,000 bonus.

Additionally, five riders will earn a berth to the PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast – Eliminations, May 9-12 in Fort Worth, Texas at Cowtown Coliseum.

With the Top 9 separated by fewer than 320 Velocity Global points, all in contention for the Velocity Tour Championship, the field is led by No. 1  Ederson Santos , who is 17.5 points ahead of No. 2  Grayson Cole .

The field also features four of the riders currently ranked inside the Top 10 in the race for the 2024 PBR World Championship. The contingent is led by current No. 2 and 18-year-old bull riding prodigy  John Crimber  and also includes No. 5  Alan de Souza , No. 8  Joao Ricardo Vieira  and No. 9  Brady Fielder . Vieira and Fielder are chasing individual glory after being a part of the 2023 PBR Teams Champion Texas Rattlers, in the PBR’s separate Teams league.

Throughout the 2024 PBR Velocity Tour Finals, riders will be competing for their share of the $100,000 event purse, and the titles of Velocity Tour Champion, which includes an added $50,000 bonus, and Velocity Tour Finals event winner. A maximum of 320 Velocity Tour Global points will be available at the 2024 PBR Velocity Tour Finals, with 40 points awarded to each round winner, and 200 points to the top rider in the aggregate.

Riders will also earn points for their ride scores. Rides from 70-79.75 points will earn 7 points, 80-89.75 will earn 8 points and rides 90-99.75 will earn 9 bonus points. Should a rider register three 90-point rides, he would earn and additional 27 Velocity Global points, making one rider’s potential maximum points earned 347.

The championship event at American Bank Center Arena culminates a high-intensity season that began first week of January and crisscrossed the country with 30 regular-season events held across four months, including 12 weekends with two events held simultaneously. Welcoming more than 348,000 fans throughout the season, the Velocity Tour hosted 18 sold out events, marking its most successful season in attendance since its inception in 2015.

Regarded as “The Championship before the Championship,” the Velocity Tour’s season-end event also represents the final opportunity for five riders to qualify to the sport’s most prestigious event, the PBR World Finals, which will debut a new format in 2024. The World Finals will begin with  Eliminations  on May 9-12 in Fort Worth at Cowtown Coliseum, where 20 riders will earn direct berths to the  Championship  on May 18-19 at AT&T Stadium in nearby Arlington. Riders who do not advance will have one last chance to remain in the race for the title of World Champion by competing at  Ride For Redemption  on May 15-16 at Cowtown Coliseum, which will award the final five berths to the  Championship .

Santos has been sensational all season long as he chases the 2024 PBR Velocity Tour Championship, and his first berth to the PBR World Finals.

The talented 36-year-old rode to two event wins, in addition to logging 10 accompanying Top-10 finishes across all levels of Velocity Global competition. He covered a torrid 56.09% of his bovine athlete opponents, going 23-for-41.

The surging Brazilian is followed closely by  Grayson Cole , who gained significant ground on the No. 1 rank at the regular-season finale for the Velocity Tour in late April in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Throughout 2024, Cole won four events, including the most recent tour stop in North Dakota. Much like Santos, Cole also registered an additional 10 Top-10 efforts, including a third-place result in Grand Forks, earned courtesy of a double-entry. Cole’s pair of podium finishes in the Peace Garden State allowed him to rise from No. 3 to No. 2, diminishing Santos’ sizeable 199.5-point lead to a mere 17.5 points.

The remainder of the Top 10 who are active and anticipated to compete at the 2024 PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals includes: No. 3  Dener Barbosa  (-144 points); No. 4  Jean Fernandes Pereira  (-197.17 points); No. 5  Dawson Branton  (-237.84 points); No. 7  Ramon de Lima  (-255 points); No. 8  Thiago Salgado  (-298.17 points); No. 9  Guilherme Valleiras  (-319.5 points); and No. 10  Jake Morinec  (-336.5 points).

One rider earned a berth to the Velocity Tour Finals via their World Champion status. 2002 gold buckle-winner  Ednei Caminhas , who is also now Assistant Coach for the New York Mavericks in PBR Teams,   is anticipated to compete at the two-day event in Corpus Christi.

Should Caminhas qualify for the World Finals, he would become the oldest ever to do so at the age of 48, breaking the record of 46 he previously set in 2022 when he qualified for the World Finals via the Velocity Tour Finals.

Three riders earned their spot at the 2024 Velocity Tour Finals via international invites. 2022 PBR Australia Rookie of the Year  Qynn Andersen  will ride for Australia, 2022 PBR Canada Champion  Nick Tetz  will represent Canada, and 2023 PBR Brazil Champion  Jean Fernandes Pereira  will compete for Brazil. Last season Tetz earned the international invite, subsequently competing at his career-first PBR World Finals where he finished 16 th . Tetz’ breakthrough season stateside in individual competition led him to be signed by the Arizona Ridge Riders, where he went on to be the team’s top performer in 2023.

Of the three international invites, the top finisher will receive one of the available berths to the 2024 PBR World Finals. In 2017,  Jose Vitor Leme  earned this invite, which set forth a career which continues to reshape the PBR record books.

Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour again charters action-packed season, including 11 weekends with simultaneous tour stops

The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced its 2024 competition schedule for the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour, set to bring some of bull riding’s preeminent talents to 30 cities across 20 states, headlined by a historic 11 double-up event weekends.  The tour will make a stop at  Acrisure Arena  in Greater Palm Springs on March 15 and 16, 2024.

The announcement comes on the spurs of one of the organization’s most dynamic individual seasons in 2023, as the PBR Velocity Tour broke and reset numerous attendance and competition records en-route to its most successful season to date.

In 2023, the expansion Velocity Tour hosted more than 289,000 fans, setting 21 event attendance records, while selling out 17 events.

On the dirt,  Josh Frost  (Randlett, Utah) was crowned the 2023 PBR Velocity Tour Champion, concluding the season 113.5 points ahead of runner-up  Claudio Montanha Jr.  (Ribeirao dos Indios, Brazil). The two battled it out until the final outs of the season at the tour’s Finals. Frost was crowned the Velocity Tour Champion just days before being selected by the Carolina Cowboys with the second overall pick in the 2023 PBR Teams Draft.

Throughout the upcoming five-month 2024 season, the Velocity Tour will hold 29 regular-season events, headlined by 11 double-up event weekends, including the tour’s season-launch weekend when it will hold events in Lexington, Kentucky (Jan. 5-6 | Rupp Arena) and Portland, Oregon (Jan. 6 | Moda Center).

Following the series’ opening weekend, the Velocity Tour will return to the iconic National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, holding one of its two three-day events, and lone mid-week tour stop, Jan. 8-10.

To conclude the intense slate of January events, the Velocity Tour will host three consecutive double-up shows, traveling to Charleston, West Virginia (Jan. 12-13 | Charleston Coliseum) and Spokane, Washington (Jan. 13 | Spokane Arena) concurrently, followed by simultaneous events in Reno, Nevada (Jan. 19-20 | Reno Events Center) and Grand Rapids, Michigan (Jan. 19-20 | Van Andel Arena), and synchronized tour stops in Laredo, Texas (Sames Auto Arena| Jan 26-27) and Greenville, South Carolina (Jan. 26-27 | Bon Secours Wellness Arena).

Throughout February, the Velocity Tour will bring events to eight cities across as many states including South Carolina, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Massachusetts.

During the campaign, the Velocity Tour’s reach will be on full display as it holds events more than 2,500 miles apart, visiting North Charleston, South Carolina at North Charleston Coliseum on Feb. 2-3, and Bakersfield, California at Mechanics Bank Arena on Feb. 3.

To kick off its March campaign, the tour will debut in Bridgeport, Connecticut at Total Mortgage Arena. Across all levels of PBR competition, the Touring Pro Division has held four events in the city, last travelling to Bridgeport in 2011.

As the month continues, Bangor, Maine, will host the second three-day event of the 2024 season on March 8-10.

The March slate of events will also include a return to Palm Springs, California at Acrisure Arena on March 15-16. The Velocity Tour debuted in Palm Springs in 2023 to much fanfare, selling out both performances of the two-day event.

In the final month of the season, The Velocity Tour will traverse the Western United States, visiting Fresno, California (April 5-6 | Save Mart Center), Eugene, Oregon (April 12-13 | Matthew Knight Arena) and Wichita, Kansas (April 20 | INTRUST Bank Arena), before Grand Forks, North Dakota and Alerus Center hosts the regular-season finale on April 27.

For the third consecutive year, the prestigious PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas, launching the well-known Buc Days celebration. Riders will be vying for the title of 2024 PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Champion with five spots also on the line to qualify for the 2024 PBR World Finals.

Let's get ready to Worcester Rumble — Professional Bull Riders tour comes to DCU Center

pbr velocity tour announcers

When Hunter Ball is at the DCU Center on Feb. 24 and 25, at least a couple of 2,000 pound bulls will be trying to throw something off their backs.

Namely, Hunter Ball — 5' 7'', 140 pounds.

But Ball, 24, didn't seem too worried about the prospect when speaking on the phone recently. "When the bull starts bucking on you, you get excited ... It's a lot of fun," he said.

That's one of the reasons Ball is a professional bull rider, one of about 40 who will be at the DCU Center for the "Worcester Rumble," also known as   PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour,  at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 and 2 p.m. Feb. 25.

The event will showcase what has been called the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness.

"The adrenaline gets going. Especially when you do it right, accomplish what you set out to do, it's a great feeling," Ball said.

During the course of trying to ride a 2,000 pound bull, you can't take the bull by the horns. The rider has only a braided rope to hold on to with one hand, while the other hand has to stay in the air. "We're not supposed to touch the bull or ourselves," Ball said. As judges award points for different stylistic considerations, the rider has to stay on a bull for at least eight seconds. The rider wants a raging bull as opposed to a sleepy one. Among the things judges are looking for is "how high the bull jumps and kicks," Ball said.

Bull riding has Velocity in Worcester

Worcester audiences have taken to the Worcester Rumble, and the Feb. 24 and 25 event will mark the eighth time the Velocity Tour has travelled to DCU Center. Organizers said that following the "overwhelming enthusiasm and demand for PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour events in Worcester, including single-day sold out shows the past four years, the organization expanded the competition to be two days in February 2024. PBR Worcester will be met with added significance as the PBR’s lone event in Massachusetts during the 2024 individual season."

PBR is celebrating its 31st anniversary since 20 cowboys broke away from the traditional rodeo with the belief that bull riding could be a standalone sport. Since their trailblazing initiative, the PBR has grown into a global phenomenon.

'It's gonna be a good show'

There are three PBR series touring in in the U.S. — Unleash the Beast, Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour and Touring Pro Division. Riders on the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour are competing for points that can get them to the top level Unleash the Beast tour. The 2024 PBR World Finals will begin in Fort Worth at Dickies Arena, on May 10-13, for Eliminations, featuring the Top 40 riders from the Unleash The Beast standings, joined by the five invited riders advancing via the Velocity Tour Finals.

At the time of being interviewed, Ball had logged four Top-10 finishes on the Velocity Tour so far in the early stages of the 2024 season, while also being invited to appear at two premier Unleash The Beast events.

Ahead of coming to the DCU Center for the first time in his riding career, the easy-going sounding but tough-riding Ball said "I'm very excited. I've been having a great year. It's gonna be a good show."

The 40 competitors will vie for points, each trying to stay atop a bull in initial rounds on Feb. 24 and 25. The top 10 or 12 point-getters then will head into a short-round, third bill on Feb. 25 that will determine the event winner.

Ball's goal is to end the 2024 season in the Top Ten riders on the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour which would promote him to Unleash the Beast. He was currently 13th.

"I'm trying not to look at it too much," he said of the standings.

Ball is from rural Carsonville, Michigan, and his interest in bull riding dates to when he was seven-years-old and would climb aboard beef calves at his grandfather's farm. "My grandpa had a cattle ranch. I was always around the horses and cattle," he said.

He rode at county fairs, and then Nathan Muxlow of the nearby Muxlow Cattle Company, who has an associated training school for bull riding, gave Ball some valuable training working from riding beef calves to bulls. "He helped me a lot," Ball said.

Ball advanced to being a college competitor while he was a student athlete at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas, and made the College National Finals Rodeo.

Bull riding got him "a college degree and college rodeos. It's done a lot for me," Ball said.

He's been a PBR rider "going for about four years," starting in the Touring Pro Division.

Ball said he's single and can see himself riding until he's about 31 or 32. "I love being with my buddies, traveling the country."

Bull riding can be dangerous, of course, and one time Ball said he "broke my jaw pretty bad and busted some teeth out." Other than that, however, he's stayed fairly injury free.

"I'm pretty grateful for staying pretty healthy. Nothing too bad," he said.

PBR Announces 2024 Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Schedule

Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour again charters action-packed season, including 11 weekends with simultaneous tour stops

PUEBLO, Colo. – The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced its 2024 competition schedule for the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour, set to bring some of bull riding’s preeminent talents to 30 cities across 20 states, headlined by a historic 11 double-up event weekends.
