Guitar Hero: On Tour

Guitar Hero: On Tour

Are you ready to rock on the road?

Guitar Hero: On Tour lets you take the hard-strumming Guitar Hero experience wherever you go. Utilising the revolutionary Guitar Hero Guitar Grip peripheral that fits snugly into the Nintendo DS’s Game Pak slot, Guitar Hero: On Tour gives fans a chance to shred along with their favourite tunes with complete portability.

The soundtrack features the most diverse set list of master tracks ever offered in a Guitar Hero game, including classic rock, alternative and pop favourites. For the first time, the same epic music, gameplay and graphics players have come to expect in the console version have combined into one handheld package, creating the most ground-breaking gaming experience to date.

With a vast collection of Gibson guitars, five unlockable new venues and six characters to choose from – including two new rockers exclusive to the DS – players can personalise their Guitar Hero experience to their hearts’ desire.

  • With the Guitar Hero Guitar Grip attachment, fans can take their music on the road. An ergonomic extension that mimics a guitar fret board, the peripheral fits seamlessly into your hand to deliver a unique Guitar Hero experience.
  • Included with the game is a new Guitar Hero pick-stylus that lets you strum away in style on the DS Touch Screen.
  • Players can connect wirelessly to compete with their friends in head-to-head Guitar Duels or shred cooperatively with multiplayer modes including Face Off, Pro Face Off and Co-Op. For the solo rocker, single-player modes include Career and Quick Play.
  • Warm up your pipes! Players can yell “Rock Out” directly into the DS microphone to activate star power.

Guitar Hero: On Tour review

Tour canceled due to broken wrists.

guitar hero on tour

GamesRadar+ Verdict

Audio is surprisingly clear

Guitar Grip is a novel solution

You'll really want to like it

But your wrists and neck won't let you

Weak track list

Low replay value

Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.

Guitar Hero has been so massively successful for one reason - it's an excellent guitar-playing simulator with classic video game trappings. Guitar Hero: On Tour can't possibly ship with a fake guitar, so it can only simulate Guitar Hero gameplay, not the just-real-enough rock experience. In the transition to DS, it's lost the party game vibe, the friendly humiliation of poorly playing a song you love, even the quasi-pride you get when five starring every song on expert. In those games, for brief moments you feel like you can actually shred out "Enter Sandman" on a real guitar.

None of that is present here. You're left with a clever, technically impressive title that strains your hands and neck after prolonged play - not things you'd want attributed to a game trying to make you feel like the biggest rock god on the bus, train or study hall. It basically works the same, with surprisingly crisp audio from 25 well-known songs. The notes slide from the top, you hold the fret buttons on the bulky attachment and strum with the stylus as you might on a real six string - if it were made of touch screens and plastic.

guitar hero on tour

Hammer-ons and pull-offs function fine, but we did have several moments of "um, I did that right" when it came to strumming left and right for long, repeated notes (the equivalent of strumming up and down on the plastic guitars). Sometimes it'd work flawlessly; others we'd randomly hear the "skirch!" noise, claiming we missed a note when we're 100% certain we didn't. Maybe it's just us getting used to the setup, but rest assured there are sections you'll miss that you know you would have aced on any of the other four Guitar Hero games. There also seem to be more menus and unnecessary navigation in this version than the earlier games, doubly strange because this is supposed to be portable and quicker than the others.

The Guitar Grip add-on doohickey slips out of the GBA slot a little too easily. Imagine you're three minutes into a track and it slides out of contact with the hardware, interrupting the game with a message to reconnect the device and turn the game off. Turn it OFF, lose that progress. Normally if a controller runs out of batteries or is unplugged, all you have to do is reconnect it - now you're forced out of the game entirely. Given the unique and frankly impressive nature of the add-on, this is probably an unavoidable side effect and not anyone's direct fault. Doesn't mean it's easy to overlook.

guitar hero on tour

These mildly irksome problems add to a deeper concern - there's no sense of stardom, no wish fulfillment, just a series of colored notes that you have to hit. It dawned on us that 2003's Amplitude (and prequel Frequency, both by Harmonix) were just that and hugely fun, so why can't a scaled-back Guitar Hero be enjoyed in the same fashion? Well, because Amplitude never aspired to deliver a semi-realistic experience; it was merely an addictive, speedy puzzle game with a fantastic soundtrack. You were master of all sounds, from vocals to synth to guitars to drums to sound effects. Guitar Hero, on the other hand, hinges on the first word in its title (hint: guitar) and scratching a touch screen a thousand times is the furthest thing from rock and roll we can think of.

Ultimately, this is the real issue - Guitar Hero, in its present state, isn't meant for handhelds in the same way DDR doesn't work with a weird mini dance mat for your fingers. It needs to be totally re-imagined as something that fit the DDR brand but had its own identity for handhelds, maybe an Elite Beat Agents type of game with customizable dancers. Similarly, Guitar Hero needs a different approach on DS (or PSP), as simply trying to shrink the presentation and gameplay of the console version isn't enough. Then consider that more people own PS2s than DS and Wii combined, so millions more already have access to four other (better) Guitar Hero games that deliver a more rewarding, tactile sensation.

Foghat’s original drummer spills details about 2023 tour and new album.

  • View Author Archive
  • Get author RSS feed

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Foghat members Rodney O'Quinn (L), Roger Earl, Scott Holt and Bryan Bassett smile for the camera.

Fifty-two years into their illustrious career, Foghat isn’t tired of their mega-hit single “Slow Ride.”

The ubiquitous classic rock staple, that showed up in the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused,” countless commercials and the video game Guitar Hero, still gets the band excited when they play live.

“I enjoy it,” original Foghat member, drummer and Long Island resident Roger Earl told the New York Post. “It’s a nine-minute song these days.”

After he shared his appreciation for the track, Earl turned the tables and lobbed a question our way.

“Do you know what ‘Slow Ride’ is about?” the 77-year-old rock vet asked.

Before given a chance to answer, he laughed.

“‘Slow Ride’ is about sex!” Earl roared. “In fact, most of our songs are about it, ‘I’ve just done it, I’m thinking about doing it again, would you like some of me, darling.’ Rock and roll, right?'”

Just like that, we were off to the races.

Foghat , who first captured the world’s attention with iconic ’70s bops “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and “Fool For The City,” is about to drop their bluesy 17th album “Sonic Mojo” this November and tour all over North America in support of the upcoming record.

That includes a huge gig at New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club that doubles as an album release party on Sunday, Nov. 12.

“I’m looking forward to playing the Iridium because there’s going to be a bunch of people I know,” Earl smiled. “It’s going to be a busy night.”

And even though the band has lost key members over the half-century they’ve been together like legendary lead singer “Lonesome Dave” Peverett, Fogat has a solid core these days.

As of now, the band is made up of Earl along with Wild Cherry guitarist Bryan Bassett (yes, the group that brought the world “Play That Funky Music”), Pat Travers band alum Rodney O’Quinn and Buddy Guy singer Scott Holt.

“This is a real band. We love playing. No miserable bastards here. And if we do have a few drinks after the show, everybody’s a happy drunk, so maybe that helps.”

Earl doesn’t plan on hanging it up anytime soon, either.

“The day I don’t play anymore is when my hands and feet and everything don’t function anymore,” he said.

“I’ll roll ’til I’m old, rock ’til I drop.”

A slow ride to the end, indeed.

Want to go to a Foghat show in the near future?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about their ‘Road Fever Tour’ below.

The above interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Foghat 2023-24 tour schedule

A complete calendar, including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available, can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Foghat setlist

After over 50 years together, the band has perfected the art of concert curation.

Here are the tracks that they’ve been playing at recent shows — including a few deep-cut covers — courtesy of  Set List FM .

01.) “Fool for the City” 02.) “Road Fever” 03.) “My Babe” (The Righteous Brothers cover) 04.) “Slipped, Tripped, Fell in Love” 05.) “A Hole to Hide In” 06.) “Sweet Home Chicago” (Robert Johnson cover) 07.) “Somebody’s Been Sleeping (In My Bed)” (100 Proof (Aged in Soul) cover) 08.) “A Little Bit of Everything” 09.) “Stone Blue” 10.) “It Hurts Me Too” (Tampa Red cover) 11.) “Home in My Hand” 12.) “Trouble, Trouble” 13.) “I Just Want to Make Love to You” (Willie Dixon cover) Encore:

14.) “Play That Funky Music” (Wild Cherry cover) 15.) “Slow Ride”

It’s likely things will be a bit different on this tour, though.

“Every January, we come down to Florida, and we change the show around,” Earl told us. “There’s always five or six songs we always play, which is fine by me, but then the rest is new.”

Foghat new album

On Friday, Nov 10, Foghat’s 17th studio album, “Sonic Mojo” hits shelves.

The record is an ode to the blues, boogie and rock and roll.

In a word, it fits right into the fun-loving group’s catalog.

For our money, the track to look out for is the ZZ Top-like single “Drivin’ On.”

You can check out the two-minute jam below.

Foghat band name origin

We had to ask two questions.

Where did the band name come from AND does the band play “Slow Ride” on Guitar Hero?

Earl was happy to answer.

“Our original lead singer, Lonesome Dave, made the band name up. He was playing a Scrabble kind of game when he was like 13 or 14 with his younger brother, John. Dave insisted Foghat was a real name. His brother argued about it.”

50 years later, Foghat is an internationally recognized band.

As for Guitar Hero, no, the band does not sit around and play “Slow Ride.”

The song did widen their fanbase, though.

After the game came out, kids aged six to ten started coming to shows and asking to have their guitars signed.

“We’ve been in films, car commercials, handbag ads, stuff like that. And it turns young people on to the music, and then they discover us.”

To this day, they have a variety of people coming to their shows.

“Obviously, they’re the ones that grew up with us who are in their 60s now, but we have a lot of young people coming too,” Earl explained.

“Teenagers, people in their twenties and early thirties show up too, which is really refreshing because it means, I think it means that maybe we got it right in the first place.”
