Madonna Officially Postpones Celebration Tour

The pop superstar’s global outing spotlighting her decades of hits will begin in October in Europe. “My focus now is my health,” she wrote on social media.

Madonna’s North American tour is officially postponed.

Two weeks ago, the pop star’s new Celebration Tour — a greatest-hits outing announced to great media fanfare in January, which was set to open this week — was put on an undefined “pause” after the singer’s manager said she had been admitted to a hospital with “a serious bacterial infection.” Rampant concern and speculation ensued among fans and within the music business about Madonna’s well-being, as well as the fate of her world tour, which had the potential to be one of the year’s biggest events.

On Monday, a message from Madonna on social media clarified that the entire North American leg of her tour — 41 shows, about half the total that had been announced for the full world outing — would be rescheduled, and that the tour would now open in Europe in October. Live Nation, which is producing the tour, asked fans to “hold onto their tickets as they will be valid for the new dates once announced.”

“My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can!” Madonna, 64, wrote in her first statement since her manager’s post on June 28. She also posted a photo that appeared to show her in her home in Manhattan.

“I’m on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life,” she added.

Ticket sales for Madonna’s tour opened with a splash; according to an announcement in March, more than 40 dates had already sold out by then. But a glance at further dates on Ticketmaster’s website shows a number of locations — Sacramento; Tulsa, Okla.; even Barclays Center in Brooklyn — where plenty of seats are available.

Last week, Beyoncé canceled a date in Pittsburgh, and postponed two others, over what was announced as issues with “production logistics and scheduling.”

Rescheduling a major tour, for any reason, can be a complex and expensive process these days, music executives say. That is because with the return of live music after its shutdown by the Covid-19 pandemic, large venues typically lock in their schedules many months in advance, with little wiggle room for changes. In its announcement about the Madonna tour, Live Nation said simply, “Rescheduled dates will be announced as soon as possible.”

Madonna is in intensive care after getting a “serious bacterial infection”.

The 64-year old singer was due to go on tour next month, with concerts scheduled in countries around the world.

However, she is now pausing “all commitments”, meaning that these shows have been put on hiatus.

What happened to Madonna?

A statement posted via her manager Guy Oseary’s Instagram account said: “On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several-day stay in the ICU.

“Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.”

There was no immediate confirmation via the star’s website or own social media channels, however, and tickets for upcoming tour stops still appeared to be on sale.

Messages of support were left on social media by fans and stars around the world.

Singer Rita Wilson said she was “sending Madonna my prayers for a speedy recovery”, while actress Rosanna Arquette wrote: “Sending her love and good light vibrations for a good recovery.”

Michelle Visage also sent wishes, with the RuPaul’s Drag Race judge writing: “Take good care of our Queen.”

Is Madonna’s tour still going ahead?

Madonna has paused all commitments – including the tour – until further notice, although further details have not been confirmed.

Oseary’s statment continued: “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.

“We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”

The Madonna: The Celebration Tour , marking her four-decade recording career since breakout single “Holiday”, was due to kick off in July in Vancouver, with dates already announced across North America and Europe until early 2024.

Madonna, 64, was expected to be supported on the “one-of-a-kind” tour by RuPaul’s Drag Race star Bob the Drag Queen, with a setlist to “highlight her biggest hits from her unmatched music catalogue over the past 40 years”.

“I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for,” she said in the tour’s announcement video earlier this year.

After tickets went on sale, she said: “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world and I’m so grateful for all your support.

“And I can’t wait to put this show together and have a moment with each and every one of you on the stage to celebrate the last four decades of my journey. I don’t take any of this for granted.”

The tour was due to be her first since her Madame X shows in 2019 and 2020, which ended abruptly due to the Covid-19 pandemic after several cancellations due to a recurring knee injury.

Several London shows from the Madame X tour were among those cancelled “on doctors’ orders”, with the star writing at the time: “Doing my show every night brings me so much joy and to cancel is a kind of punishment for me but the pain I’m in right now is overwhelming and I must rest and follow doctors’ orders so I can come back stronger and better and continue the Madame X journey with all of you.”

Madonna has revealed the “first thought” she had after “waking up in hospital”, as she continues to recover from a recent health scare.

On 28 June, it was announced that the “Like a Virgin” singer had been admitted to the ICU after suffering a “serious bacterial infection.”

Madonna’s longtime manager Guy Oseary announced the news, stating that her live show dates would be postponed while she recovers.

On Monday (10 July), Madonna broke her silence following fan concern regarding her health. She thanked them for their “prayers and words of healing and encouragement”, and opened up about her recent experience in the hospital.

Appearing to confirm reports that she had lost consciousness, Madonna said: “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children.”

Fans defend Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy’s age gap in Oppenheimer

Madonna has six children – Lourdes Leon, 26, Rocco Ritchie, 22, 17-year-old David Banda, whom she adopted in 2006, 17-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James, whom she adopted in 2009, and 10-year-old twins Stella and Estere, whom she adopted in 2017.

She added: “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour.

Elaborating, the singer said: “I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

Madonna assured her fans that her “focus is now my health” and went on to announce when she plans to embark on her delayed tour.

“The current plan is to reschedule the North American leg of the tour and to begin in October in Europe,” she said, capping the statement with: “I couldn’t be more grateful for your care and support. Love, M.”

Madonna posts statement about health on Instagram

The Queen of Pop was due to begin The Celebration Tour in Canada on 15 July. The Celebration Tour will feature music from Madonna’s catalogue across four decades, and was scheduled to arrive in the UK in October and December.

Billed as a “one-of-a-kind experience”, the tour is also set to feature special guest Bob the Drag Queen, real name Caldwell Tidicue, across all dates.

The Celebration tour, which is set to run for 84 shows, comes two years after she last toured in 2019 in support of her 14th studio album, Madame X.

In January, Madonna announced the tour, telling fans on Instagram to “come join the party”.

Madonna Details New Celebration Tour Dates After Hospitalization

Portrait of Justin Curto

Update, August 15: More than a month after delaying her Celebration tour because of a bacterial infection, Madonna has set new North American dates . The run will now follow the European leg of the tour, beginning on December 13 in Brooklyn and ending on April 24, 2024, in Mexico City. As part of the rescheduling, Madonna had to cancel dates in Tulsa, Nashville, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. “Madonna regrets the inconvenience to fans and hopes to make it up to those markets in the future,” promoter Live Nation said in an announcement.

Update, July 10: Madonna is “on the road to recovery,” according to her first statement since news of her hospitalization for a bacterial infection. The singer also detailed tentative plans to reschedule the North American leg of her Celebration tour and kick off the shows in Europe in October. “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children,” Madonna wrote on social media. “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.” Live Nation confirmed the North American leg, which was set to kick off July 15 in Vancouver, would be postponed with new dates yet to be announced. The tour now begins October 14 in London. Madonna went on to thank her fans for their well wishes, saying, “My focus right now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can!”

As of July 3, according to Rosie O’Donnell’s Instagram , Madonna is out of the ICU and recovering at home. “She is recovering at home — she is very strong in general,” O’Donnell replied to a concerned fan. O’Donnell posted a pic of her and Madonna in A League of Their Own , which prompted the pair’s mutual fans to share their concern for the pop star. And although Madonna is expected to make a full recovery, the timeline of that recovery remains TBD.

Original story follows.

Madonna won’t be celebrating as soon as she thought. The pop icon is delaying her upcoming Celebration tour after being hospitalized for a bacterial infection, per her manager, Guy Oseary. He wrote on Instagram that Madonna got the infection on June 24, then spent “several” days in the ICU. The tour had been set to begin less than a month later, on July 15, in Vancouver. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected,” Oseary wrote. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.” The Celebration tour was set to be Madonna’s first fully retrospective outing to honor the 40th anniversary of her career. The performer currently has more than 80 dates scheduled on the world tour including six nights each in New York, Los Angeles, and London. Oseary did not reveal how long the tour would be postponed or when it would start again but promised to share new and rescheduled dates “soon as we have them.”
