Derawan Island (Pulau Derawan) In Borneo – Travel Guide

The region of East Kalimantan (Borneo) is very much untouched and it offers incredible destinations such as Derawan Island, a tiny little landmass covered with coconut palm trees and colorful beach shacks.

I have put together this complete guide to Derawan Island including how to get there and what to expect when you arrive.

WHERE IS DERAWAN ISLAND (PULAU DERAWAN)

Derawan Island is located in the Celebes Sea off the coast of East Kalimantan in Borneo, Indonesia.

There is an archipelago of islands in the Celebes Sea and Derawan is the main hub for travelers wishing to visit this mecca of islands.

HOW TO GET TO DERAWAN ISLAND?

The most convenient way to get to Derawan is to catch a flight to Berau Airport and take a 15-minute taxi to the Tanjung Redeb boat harbor.

The cost of a taxi is $8 from Berau Airport to Tanjung Redeb. From here you will have to take a speed boat to Derawan Island which takes 2 hours for 250,000 Rupiah ($25) one way.

The boats run 7  days a week and generally every 2 hours. The first boat departs at 8 am and the last boat leaves at 4 pm.

You will see a ticket office alongside the river’s edge at the Tanjung Redeb boat harbor and you can organize your trip there.

If you have any difficulties trying to find the right boat, the locals are very quick to give you some help, you need only ask.

TOP 4 THINGS TO DO ON DERAWAN ISLAND

Scuba diving on pulau derawan.

One of the main points of interest for visitors to the island is scuba diving.

There are a number of Dive Resorts located around the island that offers great packages for some of the best diving locations in the world.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do any scuba diving on my visit to Pantai Derawan as I had an ear injury in the past that prevents me from diving.

THE BENT PALM TREE – PANTAI DERAWAN

On your self-guided Derawan Tour, you can find a patch of palm trees on a mound of blinding white sand on the most eastern tip of the island.

There is one unique palm that bends out at a 45-degree angle over the water’s edge. My buddy and I took turns in climbing the palm tree to try to get ourselves a fresh coconut.

I wish I could say that we were successful in our efforts though I have to be honest and say we didn’t reach the top.

We decided to head back to the bent palm for sunset and we then waited for the milky way to rise to capture a long exposure shot of this location.

DERAWAN ISLAND SHIPWRECK

Continue the adventure along the shoreline till you come across the Shipwreck.

It only takes a maximum of 30 minutes to walk around the entire island so it’s hard to miss this wrecked boat on the sandbank.

Surrounded by a mecca of palm trees and debris from the shipwreck, this location will make you feel like you’re on the set of ‘Cast Away’!

SUNSET POINT

The best spot to spend the golden hour on your self-guided Derawan Tour is at Sunset Point.

There is yet another bent palm tree to climb on this side of the island and it is one of the best spots on Pulau Derawan to perch yourself for a sunset.

Sunset point is located next to the Shipwreck in case you can’t find it!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Derawan Island can be visited year-round. I visited in early June during Ramadhan and it was very quiet and peaceful.

Local Indonesian cuisine is mostly served at every restaurant and warung. Don’t be surprised if you don’t find a westernized meal on the island.

There is an ATM machine located in Pulau Derawan though I chose to take out some cash when I arrived at Berau Airport just to be sure I had enough funds to cover myself.

The Derawan Islands in East Kalimantan are one of the most exciting, biodiverse places to travel in Borneo . Even with a short stay, you may get to see giant mantas, whale sharks, dolphins, stingless jellyfish, and endangered sea turtles. Getting there requires patience, so travelers more often choose to stay in Malaysian Borneo and dive Sabah’s islands to the north .

Only two of the 31 islands in the Derawan chain have accommodation: Pulau Derawan and the larger, hook-shaped Maratua Island. Pulau Derawan is closer to the mainland and therefore more developed, whereas Maratua Island is comparatively pristine and enjoys a lot more room. No matter where you base yourself, though, you’ll be taking speedboats to enjoy memorable adventures throughout the chain.

The small airport on Maratua Island only handles irregular, chartered flights, but authorities hope to change that soon. Use this guide to the Derawan Islands to get there before the tourism floodgates swing open.

Planning Your Trip

• Best Time to Visit : The Derawan Islands receive consistent rainfall throughout the year; however, July, August, and September are often driest. Weekends and holidays are busiest.
• Language: Bahasa Indonesia is the national language, but the many ethnic Bajau people living on the islands speak the Indonesian Bajau dialect. A lot of people who work with tourists speak some English.

• Getting Around: Traveling between the islands requires taking bumpy speedboat rides. Although there are a few scooters and small trucks on Maratua Island, renting a bicycle is an enjoyable way for tourists to explore the island. Tiny Pulau Derawan can be circumnavigated on foot in about an hour.
• Travel Tip: Nearly all food and supplies have to be carried over from the mainland by boat. Prices are significantly higher on the islands, and you’ll have fewer choices for toiletries, snacks, and other items. Bring everything you need with you from the mainland.

Things to Do

Skip the tours that encourage unnatural behavior (e.g., feeding whale sharks), and avoid following in the footsteps of the many visitors to the Derawan Islands who have made a bad habit of handling the jellyfish and baby turtles to take photos. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the marine life without accidentally endangering it.

• Go Diving : Along with the Togean Islands in Sulawesi and Raja Ampat in Papua, the Derawan Islands are part of a “coral triangle” that is considered one of the richest areas for marine life in the world. The biodiversity beneath the surface is unbeatable—potential sightings range in size from mantas and whale sharks to pygmy seahorses. Dive shops typically offer bundled accommodation packages.
• Visit Sangalaki Island: Taking an excursion to Sangalaki Island is one of the most popular things to do in the Derawan Islands. Sanglaki is home to a sea turtle sanctuary, and visitors can also snorkel a point where big manta rays frequent. (Although the snorkeling is good, seeing a manta isn’t guaranteed.)
• See the Sea Turtles: You can spot green sea turtles (endangered) and hawksbill sea turtles (critically endangered) at any time while snorkeling or even just walking on the beach! Be watchful for nests and eggs.
• Swim with the Jellyfish: Kakaban Island and Maratua Island are home to brackish lakes where jellyfish have lost their ability to sting, meaning that visitors can swim in surreal swarms of harmless jellyfish. Even the box jellyfish, an exceptionally dangerous jellyfish in other places, is harmless here.
• Explore by Bicycle: If you need a day out of the water, rent a bicycle on Maratua Island and begin riding. You’ll get to see scenes of daily life and meet new people. Getting lost is unlikely, but ride with caution on the sandy roads. The big monitor lizards you’ll pass look like Komodo dragons, but they're harmless unless cornered. The macaque monkeys, on the other hand, may be interested in whatever you’re carrying and organize a raid!

What to Eat and Drink

Seafood is an obvious choice for eating in the Derawan Islands, but being able to see the sea from the restaurant doesn’t always guarantee freshness. Pay attention to a restaurant’s volume of traffic—fish is sometimes transported from markets on the mainland, and ice doesn’t last long near the equator.

Pretty much every meal involves rice by default. Chicken, fish, and eggs are common on menus, but vegetarians shouldn’t have much trouble locating delicious tempeh. The fermented soy protein is sometimes fried in sambal, an Indonesian chili paste, which can be made with belacan (fermented shrimp paste). Western food of varying quality can also be found at guesthouses and resorts.

Drinking fresh coconuts is a good way to replace electrolytes lost while sweating. Unfortunately, the Derawan Islands suffer from a plastic bottle problem. Take advantage if your hotel or guesthouse offers bottle fill-ups.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is cheapest on Pulau Derawan, the most densely developed of the Derawan Islands. Although Maratua Island is pricier, most visitors agree the beauty is worth paying more.

You’ll find romantic resorts and diving resorts listed on booking sites, but smaller homestays can be found on Derawan and Maratua after arriving. You can potentially save money and enjoy more personal interaction by booking a night or two with an Indonesian family.

Travel tip: "Losmen" and "rumah tamu" are Indonesian words for inn or guesthouse.

Getting There

Unless you’re lucky enough to finagle one of the rare flights into Maratua Island (TRK), you’ll need to take a combination of flights, minibuses, and boats to reach the Derawan Islands. Regional flights and boats are often delayed by weather—keep a flexible itinerary.

Option 1: Fly into Kalimarau Airport (BEJ), 6 miles from Tanjung Redeb in Berau. From there, take a taxi or shared minibus to Tanjung Batu (three hours), and then a boat to Derawan Island or Maratua Island (45 minutes).

Option 2: Fly into Tarakan in North Kalimantan (TRK), then take a four-hour boat to Derawan Island. This option cuts out a lot of overland travel and waiting; however, the long boat trip can be expensive and uncomfortable.

Depending on sea conditions, speedboat journeys can be bumpy and wet. Waterproof your passport, phone, and luggage. Take precautions for sea sickness; Dimenhydrinate (branded as Dramamine in the United States) can be found in local pharmacies. For a more natural solution, try sucking on a piece of shaved raw ginger from one of the markets.

Culture and Customs

• Although you should try to learn a few words of Bahasa Indonesia, not everyone living in the Derawan Islands speaks it. The ethnic Bajau people have their own dialect. On group excursions, friendly travelers from other parts of Indonesia will often volunteer to translate a menu or boatman’s instructions for you. Communication may be more of a challenge in smaller homestays, but that can become a fun learning experience.
• Domestic travelers in Indonesia usually love to meet international travelers. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to star in a few group photos together!
• As elsewhere in Indonesia, cover up when leaving the water. Local dress is conservative, and the equator isn’t far away—your skin will thank you.
• The home-cooked meals in family homestays are often the most memorable. Eating is done communally at set times. Guests may have the option to use utensils, but locals often eat with their hands. Use only your right hand when eating. To show respect, wait for the eldest person at the table to begin their meal. Trying at least a little of everything is polite, but do your best not to waste any food or sauces.

Money Saving Tips

• Weekends on the Derawan Islands are a mixed blessing as Indonesian travelers head out to experience the marine life. Snorkeling tours and accommodation are much busier, but you can save a lot of money by teaming up to share boat costs with weekend travelers. Traveling solo on weekdays is the most expensive way to visit the Derawan Islands; you may have to charter an entire boat yourself or wait a long time for other passengers to join.
• The Derawan Islands get busy during Chinese New Year and on local holidays such as Indonesian Independence Day on August 17 . Finding accommodation will be more of a challenge.
• There is a bank with an ATM on Maratua Island (the BPD Kaltim just north of Maratua Dive Centre), but the ATMs on Derawan Island may be subject to network outages or maintenance problems. Bring enough Indonesian rupiah with you to avoid paying for a boat to the mainland and back just to use an ATM.
• You can save money by opting to eat away from your guesthouse. Derawan Island is home to plenty of warungs, simple restaurants that serve basic Indonesian dishes.
• Tipping is not expected while traveling in the Derawan Islands.

Located just away from the mainland of East Kalimantan in the district of Berau , the Derawan archipelago comprises 31 islands, most well known among these are the islands of Derawan, Maratua, Sangalaki and Kakaban . Here is Indonesia’s largest nesting site of the rare and endangered giant green turtles and hawksbill turtles, where one can daily watch turtles lay their eggs in the sand or swim to sea with the turtles. The entire marine conservancy region covers a total area of no less than 1.27 million hectares .

Here, you can find 460 different species of coral s , ranking this area second only to the Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua. The Nature Conservancy and a team of international experts also found more than 870 species of fish here, ranging from tiny pygmy seahorses to giant manta rays. On some days, groups of up to 50 manta rays have been seen feeding together in Derawan’s waters, says the Conservancy.

While on Kakaban, you can find the world’s largest and most diverse jellyfish lake, including f our unique species of stingless jellyfish one of which can swim upside down. It is for this reason that Kakaban is considered for UNESCO nomination as a World Heritage Site .

After breakfast heading to Sangalaki Island, you will visit the turtle conservation to see the process of saving endangered species. Go for snorkelling to see the clown fish snorkelling, and if you are lucky you can swim with the giant manta ray.

Continue to Kakaban Island for snorkelling around Kakaban reef, take off your fin and continue swimming with stingless jellyfish inside the lake of Kakaban, feel the different atmosphere like in the other world. After lunch proceed to Kehe Daing lagoon for sunbathing and swimming on the white sandy beach inside the lagoon.

The next destination to visit is Maratua Island, enjoy your private beach and Haji Mangku Beach, where you can jump from 6 meter high cliff to the cool water inside the cave and go out from the other side. After all back to Derawan Island.

Day 3: Derawan Island – Berau (B)

Kakaban Island is know of it's mangrove fringed lake inside which is a bit above the sea level, the lake itself is about 17 meters deep of brackish water with a green algae bottom, sea life diverse from four types of jellyfish, snakes, orange purple and yellow clams on the branches. The Dive points around the islands as the barracuda Point has sharks, leopards fish, tunas, snappers and offcourse large schools of barracudas, the Blue Cave point is a cave of about 120 meters long with at the end a Blue sea light, and is only for the experienced divers. From the Dive points the Gorganian Forest view is amazing.

Sangalaki Turtle Island

Sangalaki as one of the Islands, is a attractive dive destination as it is known for the large manta rays that come here to feed their plankton. The Manta 's show mostly up at the north part of Sangalaki Islands, and come from all directions. The Manta's are often seen at the surface waterline, and even when snorkeling the Manta's can be easy seen. Here you can swim with the elegant moving Manta' s which have a wing weight of more then two meters. Sangalaki has dive reefs from 4 to 40 meters deep, and a serie of ridges with sandy bottom. Coral and gorgonian sea fans with reef fishes, are part of Sangalaki 's beauty dive side, near some ship wreaks. Stingless Jellyfish and Beautiful Beaches: The Magic of Derawan

I just came back from Derawan islands, East Kalimantan (some of you might be more familiar with the old name, Borneo, rather than Kalimantan). I was so excited about the trip, because it was the very first time I stepped foot on Kalimantan, one of the big five main islands of Indonesia. I spent 5 days 4 nights in Kalimantan, staying 1 night at Tarakan and 3 nights on the Derawan islands. Derawan islands consists of Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, Panjang, and Samama Island and some other tiny islands.

There are two ways to reach Derawan. The option that I took was via Tarakan (there are some direct flights from Jakarta to Tarakan). I personally think that this route is more comfortable if you come to Derawan in a big group. From Tarakan’s airport to Tengkayu harbour took around 20 mins by car. The boat from Tengkayu harbour to Derawan islands took around three hours by speedboat.

The other option is via Berau . This is a convenient option for solo traveller or people who travel in small groups. The minus point, there are no direct flights from Jakarta to Berau; you need to fly to Balikpapan first and then you can continue to Berau.

When you arrived in Berau, you can take a car, (2,5 hours trip) which costs you Rp. 70,000/person, to Tanjung Batu. From Tanjung Batu to Derawan by boat costs you around Rp. 50,000/person and the journey takes 30 mins. Please always ask the driver / locket counter for the ticket price before you get into any vehicle.

What makes the Derawan islands different compared to the 17,000-ish Indonesia’s islands?

Check out several reasons why derawan islands are worth exploring. Although one of my best friends did say that Derawan islands were not that good, I really enjoyed my trip and recommend you visit these islands.

Nothing beats diving with dozens of manta rays. So when I knew that we would get a chance to swimming with Mantas around Sangalaki island, I was really excited. It was difficult swimming with the Mantas in derawan. I needed to swim in the rough sea and the mantas were as random as can be, can and appeared ANYWHERE. So I had to count on the boat crew who always pointed “There!” “Hurry up, swim straight around 15 metres!”. I finally swim with one manta and I was just happy as that. Oh, you can also swim with Manta Rays in Raja Ampat .

So many turtles around Derawan. When snorkeling or diving, seeing a turtle is almost as casual as as meeting fish. Some of the turtles even hung around our cottage. So if you really love turtles and dream of swimming with them, then this destination is your biggest chance. You can also meet with Mr. Turtle when diving in Gili Trawangan , Manado , and many more places, but you will usually see only one or two turtles if you are lucky!

Stingless Jellyfish

I always freak out whenever I discover there are jellyfish in the ocean. I almost drowned in Lampung years ago when one of my legs was stung by a jellyfish. When I arrived in Lake Kakaban and realized that the lake was full of jellyfish (though I read that these ones are stingless), I did freak out a bit. I took time to analyze from the pier. Ah, I convinced myself that these jellyfish look different and cute. After several minutes, I swam around the lake and got addicted to the cuteness of the stingless jellyfish. Remember not to wear your flippers when you snorkel in this lake, it seriously will straight away kill the jellyfish when you accidentality kick them with your flippers.

Fried Banana with Peanut Sauce

I love banana. You can find fried banana (or any kind of banana related food/drink) as a snack almost anywhere in Indonesia. When I first saw it, I was not too sure about the fried banana served with peanut sauce in Derawan. I thought it was going to taste weird and I was a bit anxious. I tried it though and yes I was wrong! The fried banana with peanut sauce was so tasty! I want more!

Gosong Senggalau

We were so lucky that the weather improved on the second day in Derawan. The sky was so blue, the sun was bright and lovely. All this made Gosong Senggalau, the broad white sand in the middle of the sea, super pretty. I love the clear water, the white sands and the super fluffy clouds.

Meet the locals

Right, local people can be found anywhere. Start a conversation, listen to their life stories, the different accents, joke and laugh with them or buy food and souvenirs from them. Interactions with locals, whatever these interactions happen to be, will certainly be very special.

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

• Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
• Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

• Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
• Triad Pantomime Theater;
• Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
• White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs
