Lads play Soccer Saturday drinking game and end up on most random night out ever

Lads play Soccer Saturday drinking game and end up on most random night out ever

Whichever team scored the first goal in the 3pm kick-off matches among all english football leagues was the location of their night out.

Jess Hardiman

Jess Hardiman

A group of lads ended up on a night out in a random UK town after taking part in a Soccer Saturday drinking game, having let fate decide where they’d be going – with surprisingly hilarious results. You can see how their night went here:

Jack Osborne ( @jackrustyspoon1246 ), 23, was watching football with pals Matthew Perry, Jordan Holliday and Jack Holland in the pub last Saturday (20 August) when they came up with a novel way to choose what to do with their night.

One of the lads had to wear a leopard print vest after losing a bet.

They decided that the location of whichever team scored the first goal in the 3.00pm kick-off matches among all English football leagues would be their destination – only for fate to direct them to a market town more than two hours away in the car.

Osborne, from Faversham in Kent, shared a video on TikTok documenting their adventure, captioning the post: “Big up Swinny.”

Unbelievable, Jeff.

That's right, the lads were on their way to none other than Swindon, Wiltshire, which isn’t exactly known for its raging nightlife scene.

In a comment, Osborne explained that the game revolved around the ‘first team out of all four English football leagues to score in the 3pm KO’, excluding London teams, which dictated where you head on a night out.

Not everyone was impressed.

Their mate Kieran Beal, who had to join in virtually via FaceTime as he had Covid, can be heard saying in the clip: “What a shocking night out that’s going to be.”

But the lads jumped in the car and hit Swindon’s town centre – surprised to find that they ended up having a ‘great’ time.

The group sucked it up and hit the road.

Speaking to LADbible, Osborne explained: “Me and my mates decided that the first goal in 3pm kick offs in the whole English football leagues would decide where we go for a night out.

“We pre packed the car with change of clothes each and booked the hotel en route when we knew the location.

The hotel's incredible views.

“Unfortunately, Swindon scored first, which is not known for a decent night out or very luxurious place. But that is all part of the fun – and the fact you can get somewhere good or bad is what has made people interested in the idea.”

He added: “We also do a fantasy footy league and my mate lost and had to wear a leopard print vest for most the day/night, and also added in some drinking games for added fun.

“We had a great night out and it just shows it’s more who you go out with than where.”

They ended up having a 'great' night out.

Osborne said he and his friends are hoping to do the same again as part of a series, with plans to rate each of the nights out.

Many other TikTokers enjoyed watching the drama unfold, with one commenting: “Class this.”

Another said: “First group of lads ever to go for a night out in Swindon who don't live there.”

A third added: “You have a great group of mates if you can make a night out in Swindon look half decent.”

The sign of a good night, wherever you are.

When someone asked how long you're supposed to wait after the first goal before hitting the road, Osborne replied: “Straight away!!! Well finish your pint first.”

He also advised speaking to locals to get a good idea of where to go, having been told to head to Swindon’s Old Town for what ended up being a cracking night out.

What is Travel Soccer

Soccer ball car sticker

The question comes up frequently, What is travel soccer? Well, there's a lot more to it than the obvious element of traveling. Travel soccer involves more on several levels.

You're probably wondering exactly what is involved, is travel soccer worth it, and what age does travel soccer start. Let's start with an overview.

Generally speaking, travel soccer is a more competitive level of youth soccer where kids have to try out to be selected to play on a travel soccer team. Travel to games and tournaments is more regional than local. Travel soccer has a bigger time commitment and costs more than recreational soccer.

what age does travel soccer start

When to start travel soccer depends on several factors. Deciding to play or not is not just about the age, ability and soccer maturity of your child. It's also about the added time commitment (and money) that comes along when you want to enroll your child in a travel soccer league.

Generally, travel teams start with 9 year olds, but some leagues provide an opportunity for 7 years olds to play travel soccer. Many child development experts agree that kids are not yet ready emotionally to play travel soccer until they're 8 years old or older.

rec soccer vs. travel soccer benefits

Both travel soccer and recreational soccer give benefits to children. See the illustration below.

Participation in travel soccer or recreational soccer builds a foundation for success in many aspects of our kids' futures. One potential downside with travel soccer is reduced playing time for marginally skilled players. In recreational soccer kids tend to get equal playing time during the soccer matches.

travel soccer vs. rec soccer

travel soccer vs. recreational soccer comparison

The following tables highlights the main difference between not-too-serious recreational soccer and more competitive travel soccer.

is travel soccer worth it

Travel soccer is worth it if you and your child know what's involved. It can be both fun and rewarding. You will get both physical and emotional benefits by participating in travel soccer. Soccer is the number 1 sport in the world for many reasons.

youth soccer tournament sign

Just do your due diligence and find out the competitive level of the travel soccer league you're researching. Talk to a few parents who have kids participate in the travel league already. There you'll get a realistic idea of the time and money involved.

The most important thing is to find out if your child really wants to play soccer in a league where the intensity is a bit higher than the average "in-house" recreational soccer league. Some kids naturally gravitate toward enjoy a highly competitive environment. Other kids really just enjoy the social aspect and are more interested in just having a good time playing.

how much does travel soccer cost.

soccer credit card

Travel soccer cost can vary quite a bit. Travel soccer leagues may use high level coaches that get paid for their coaching skills.

Participation in soccer tournaments adds cost of the basic price of small town type of youth soccer. It varies widely by area of the country as well as the age of the players and the level of play.

Youth soccer registrations are as low as $170 and as high as $900 for a season of travel soccer. You also may have soccer uniform costs. Additionally, a big part of the expense with youth travel soccer can be your accommodations if you're traveling a significant distance from home and staying in a hotel.

10 local descriptions  of what travel soccer is

You should understand that there's a lot more to it than just how far you drive to get your child to the game. Usually, there are several things than come along with participating in a travel league for soccer. You'll see these differences in rec soccer and travel soccer if you look at these 10 descriptions taken directly from youth soccer league websites in a variety of states, all over the country.

Read the descriptions of travel soccer below and you'll see it a totally different level of competitiveness and commitment by players, parents, and coaches.

Clearly, the term travel soccer is interpreted as a level above rec (recreational) soccer, but there are no specific rules or universal guidelines that define exactly what constitutes travel soccer. For additional insights into other soccer lingo like travel soccer, you may enjoy this post on other soccer words .

how serious is travel soccer

A more appropriate way to describe the higher level of play in travel soccer is to call it "Competitive Soccer." Competitive soccer is known as club soccer in some states and known as travel soccer in others. These more competitive teams are for kids to aspire to play for an extended number of years, perhaps at the college level or above.

Girls playing recreational soccer

Not all travel soccer is super competitive. It really varies by location. This was the situation for my kids when they played "travel soccer" in southern New Jersey.

In my own small town of about 9,000 people all the kids over the age of 7 travel to other towns for their youth soccer matches. The area in South Jersey is full of similar small towns that have their own soccer organization. Most of them offer the recreational style of kids soccer for only the youngest age groups.

Kids over 7 years old travel for their soccer games because there aren't enough kids in each town to have an in-house recreational league in the older age groups.

As an Amazon associate, soccer-for-kids receives a small commission for qualifying purchases. There is no cost to you. Zero!

final thoughts on travel soccer

We all want what's best for our kids, no doubt, and we can too easily assume that means playing competitive soccer for a travel team. A true barometer of their passion to play the sport is to watch the expressions they make with their faces and their body language.

girl having fun playing soccer

If you see passion, excitement, and self-directed effort at a high level of effort, your child will likely love to participate in travel soccer. If the kids get stressed or burned out, then recreational soccer might be the better road to take.

Keep it safe. Keep it fun!

When NBC required the rights to the EPL in 2013 it became a game changer. Live EPL soccer was now easily available to all Americans, and the corporate giant wasted no time in promoting and selling the league to American fans. Currently, they offer EPL games through their various channels and platforms.

Firstly, you can usually watch one EPL game per week free on the network channel, NBC. They usually broadcast the 12:30pm Saturday game, or an 11 am Sunday match. Secondly, you’ll need to download the Peacock app to find the other games. A monthly subscription costs under $10. Thirdly, NBC usually put one or two games a week on their  USA   channel. Unfortunately, you will need a cable subscription to access that.

Champions League Games Live

A subscription to Paramount+ for less than $10 a month will cover all your Champions League and Europa League viewing requirements. Every game is available on the app. CBS also broadcast select games on its sports channel and even on its network channel for select games.

10 things to know about travel soccer

Parent · Player

When it comes to travel soccer there are some things every parent should know .  First, don’t think you have to do what everyone else is doing.  Too many people jump on the bandwagon and think for success, their kid has to play in a certain league.  Your family is different from every family on earth, so make sure you know these important tips before diving into travel soccer.

If your kid loves the sport and will put in the work, travel soccer is usually the best option.

You can find a team that travels less than others, if you desire less travel.  Depending on the league and the coach, you could travel out of state 10-15 times each season.

Just remember, do what’s best for your family !

Learn why checking away from the ball is such a key skill to have! travel soccer

What is travel soccer?

Travel soccer is more competitive than recreation soccer by far.  Some use the terms club or select soccer, but club/select soccer can stay local, where “travel soccer” is literally where you will usually travel for multiple out-of-state competitions.

Depending on the city/state you’re from, depends on how much travel you will do.

Depending on where you live makes a big difference.  The big soccer cities have tons of choices for youth soccer, where the smaller soccer cities and states have way less options.

More than anything it depends on the league your team qualifies for.

The top leagues require more travel for league games, plus there are regional and national tournaments to qualify for.

Player commitment for club soccer

The commitment is pretty high.

Most travel soccer coaches want you at the majority of the practices and games .  Players who miss either one on the regular will not be expected to play.

Again you need to find a team that fits your style.  It more depends on the coach more than the actual club.

Some coaches will expect you to play tournament over holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day.  If traveling out of town or chilling with family and friends is important to you on holiday, make sure you ask the coach their tournament plans on during these holiday weeks.

Club /travel soccer kids sign a ‘contract’ each year.  Often times the teams have a “signing party” at a players house.  It’s really a big deal to the kids. In this contract the player commits to play with the team for the season and they can’t leave until the contract is up.

Sometimes players will ask for a “release” and most of the time the coach won’t give it.

Remember, all coaches and clubs are different.  Find the one that fits your style.

Cost for travel soccer

When considering the cost you have to know that there are club fees which help pay the coaches.

Another big piece of the pie is paying for the league fees .  For the higher level “classic” leagues, which by the way they just added a 4th div classic league.  Why? Money, that’s why.  Many parents want “classic or the best”.  So the leagues give it to them and charge for it.

The price for these leagues run between $3,500 – $5,000 per team .  So about $250 per player .

Then uniform cost is separate and some teams only have to pay for these every 2 years.  Some pay for new uniforms every year.

On top of this some teams travel several out of state 3-12 times per year.  Many of these trips are via airplane, so add in airfare and hotel .  If not by plane then you can add up the gasoline for your car.

Travel commitments for travel soccer

Some of the kids I train play on teams that flew to Las Vegas , Florida and California in 12 months time.

These kids were 10 years old!  I think that’s crazy, but others don’t.  I’d say 70% of them have no problem paying for this, while the other 30% have a harder time.

If this is what you want do it, but please don’t think you have to.  It’s not going to help your child develop any more.  Really all it does is get you to experience another state and play different teams.

You have to find a team/coach that fits your commitment level .  Some coaches enter for tournaments or friendly games where you travel 2-4 hours for 1-2 games.  Other coaches only do the local leagues with 1 or 2 tournaments out of town/state.

If you live in a big soccer city there’s not as much need to travel out of state, compared to a state like Louisiana or Oklahoma who don’t have the best soccer, but do have a few good teams.

Competitive youth tournament locations

Here’s a list of 15 of the biggest & best youth soccer tournaments in the America   via ‘the 18.com’.

These tournaments are held in Maryland , Florida , Texas , California , Minnesota , Virginia , New York and Las Vegas .

Teams are from all across the country at these national tournaments.

Tournaments vs leagues [options for your teams]

I grew up 5 hours from Dallas, TX and even further from other soccer cities.

So we had 3 options …

  •  Travel on the highway every week or two to play in 1-2 league games .
  • Play only local lower level teams. (Not an option after age 12).
  • Go to tournaments instead of playing in a league and then play some other competitive friendly games against teams 2-3 hours away.

Most of my high school years we did option #3 and I think it was best!  No reason to drive 5 hours every week or two plus tournaments promised us 3 games, 5 if we got to the finals.

The other good travel/club team did option #1.  My last year in high school our coach moved to Florida, so we all had to play for the other club.  I had lots of fun traveling with buddies and their parents carpooling, but I sure am glad that only was for 1 year.

I share this story because if you live far away from the big soccer cities, these are some choices you can make.

To me it doesn’t make sense to drive that long year round and then the kids don’t even play college soccer.  But hey, that’s my opinion.  Some of my buddies who didn’t play college, probably would have done it all over again.  We did have a great time together.  We all had and have different goals, so again, do what’s best for you.

Ages for travel soccer

Again, location plays a big role when it comes to ages for travel soccer.

The larger cities have more opportunity.

Some kids as young as 7 years old start traveling to play competitive soccer.  I would guess that most kids who end up playing for the best clubs by ages 14-16 start playing competitively by age 8 .  Travel soccer goes all the way up to age 17-18 years old.

The gamble starting so young is, what if your child gets burned out by age 13 ?  I think if you’re going to start them playing travel soccer at age 8, make sure they really enjoy it and will put in the work.

One thing I bring up a lot is the kids I know who started playing club/select/travel soccer at age 10 and ended up playing college soccer.  There are tons of soccer parents who would think I’m crazy for saying age 10 because the kids would be so far behind.  True they would be behind, but that’s what catching up is for.

Alex Morgan started club at age 13.  Taylor Twellman was a multisport athlete, so he didn’t commit to soccer full out at a young age.  Both of these players ended up on the US national team and made great money.

Are there any financial scholarships offered?

Most of your big clubs offer scholarships to 1-2 players per team .  This is usually the coaches choice and often comes out of their pocket.  Coaches usually get paid per player, so if a coach picks 2 players who need scholarship that is less money compared to having 100% of the players paying full price.

Now of course the players who get scholarship are going to have to produce.  I don’t see a coach picking many players who will sit the bench and get free dues.

How is the coach chosen?

Hey, for the most part club soccer is a business .

So the biggest clubs have a mix of good coaches and not so good coaches.

The bigger the club, the more players they have which means the higher demand for coaches.

Some of the top clubs in America will literally ask parents to coach.  I ask parents and coaches the question, “are the dues less in this case”?  The answer is no.  But hey you get to where the fancy jersey and socks:)

In short, coaches find clubs and clubs find coaches.

Some of the clubs require their coaches to have a D license.  Most don’t.

If you look at the websites, very few hold the A or B license which is the highest and it goes down to a C, D, E and F.  A, B and C are rare, while most club coaches either have D, E or F.  The ‘F’ and ‘E’ only require you to take a 2-3 hour in-person course locally. The A license is a 10 day course usually held in California.

Youth soccer coaches move around from club to club as much as the players.  Sometimes it’s because of choice and other times they get forced out.  It could be another club offering a couple hundred more dollars per month, per team.  With 3-5 teams this could mean $12,000 more per year.

How to improve soccer skills at home

Kids who train even a little bit on their own give themselves a BIG advantage.  Especially the ones who practice the right skills!

You can go out and spend 2 hours kicking a ball into the goal, but are you striking the ball properly ?  Are you getting enough reps.

Kicking the ball against a wall or rebounder is better than into a goal.  The reason is because with a wall the ball comes right back to you.  This helps you develop your first touch and kicking.  Shooting into the goal doesn’t help with 1st touch.

Now let’s talk about controlling the ball and developing better footskills/dribbling.  Go to YouTube and the YouTubers will have you brainwashed to believe that getting 1,000 touches is what the pros do.  Well it’s not.  Pros don’t work much on this all.  Also youth players shouldn’t train like the pros in many aspects.

Youth players need to develop better form when dribbling and bringing the ball out of the air.

You don’t need thousands of touches to do this.

Instead you need to teach your muscle memory to do it correctly.  On top of this players need to learn how to control the ball with different parts of the feet and be smooth between touches.

What is Travel Soccer? A Parent’s Guide

' src=

If your child is interested in playing soccer at a more competitive level, you may have heard about travel soccer.

Travel soccer is a step up from recreational soccer and is designed for players who want to take their skills to the next level .

soccer saturday travel game

Is travel soccer worth it? Is it a good fit for your kid, or should they play rec instead? In this article, we’ll explore what travel soccer is, how it differs from recreational soccer, and what you can expect if your child decides to join a travel soccer team.

Understanding Travel Soccer

If you are looking for a more competitive level of youth soccer , then travel might be the right choice for your child! Teams are made up of players who have tried out and been selected based on their skills and abilities. With this said, there may be instances where a child could not make the team.

Travel soccer is different from recreational soccer in that it requires a bigger time commitment and costs more. Players are expected to attend practices and games regularly and may need to travel to games and tournaments that are more regional than local. So, instead of playing in your town every Saturday morning, you may have to travel 45 min. to compete against another town in your state.

Teams are typically more competitive than recreational teams and may participate in higher-level leagues or tournaments. This can be a great way for players to challenge themselves and improve their game.

It is important to note that travel soccer is not for everyone. It requires a significant time, energy, and financial commitment from both the player and their family. Before deciding to join a travel soccer team, it is important to consider your goals, abilities, and personal circumstances to determine if it is the right choice for you.

Benefits of Travel Soccer

If you’re considering travel soccer for your child, you may be wondering what benefits it can offer. Here are some of the advantages of playing travel:

Skill Development

One of the main benefits of competitive soccer is that it provides players with the opportunity to develop their skills more often.

Not always but many travel teams have more experienced coaches who can help players improve their technique, tactics, and physical fitness. Coaches are still volunteers (not paid) but take it more seriously than a rec program.

Players are also exposed to a higher level of competition, which can help them develop their skills more quickly.

Exposure and Opportunities

Travel soccer can provide players with exposure to club soccer coaches and directors.

Players who perform well in these situations may be invited to participate in elite camps or tournaments, which can further enhance their skills and increase their chances of playing at the next tier in U.S. soccer which is playing for a local club team .

Teamwork and Social Skills

soccer saturday travel game

Sports, in general, can help players develop valuable social and teamwork skills. Players must work together to achieve their goals and learn to communicate effectively with their teammates. This can help them develop leadership skills, build confidence, and learn how to work well with others.

In addition, travel soccer often involves traveling to different cities for games and tournaments. This can provide players with the opportunity to meet new people, hang out with their buddies outside of soccer, and develop a sense of independence and responsibility.

Requirements for Travel Soccer

There are certain requirements for travel soccer and we’ll explore them in this section.

Age and Skill Level

Most teams are organized by age group, with teams ranging from U9 to U19. The age group that you will play in will depend on your birth year. Please note that travel soccer tends to be more popular in the younger age groups where there are more opportunities. When you get to U14 and older, there are school teams (middle school and high school) thrown into the mix.

Commitment and Dedication

Travel requires more commitment of time and effort than a rec program. Players are usually expected to attend multiple practices per week, as well as weekend games and tournaments.

Additionally, players are expected to maintain a certain level of fitness and conditioning outside of practice. If you are considering joining a team, it is important to be prepared to make this level of commitment.

Financial Considerations

Travel soccer can also be more expensive than recreational soccer. In addition to the cost of equipment and uniforms, players may be required to pay for tournament fees, travel expenses, and other expenses related to the team. It is important to consider these costs before trying out for atravel soccer team .

In our town, the rec program is $65 whereas the travel program is $250. This is still much lower than a soccer club which could be more than $5,000 when all is said and done.

How to Get Started in Travel Soccer

If you’re interested in joining a team, there are a few key steps you need to take to get started. Here are some things to consider:

Finding a Local Team

Most towns will have a rec and travel program that are associated with each other. Go to your local youth sports website and dig into the information provided.

For the upcoming season, tryouts usually happen in the spring. If you want to play in the fall of 2024, tryouts is probably spring or early summer of 2024. You should not wait until the summer to start figuring it out.

If your local town does not have a travel team, check neighboring towns to join. In most cases, you don’t need to be from that town to play on their team.

Tryouts and Selection Process

Most teams hold tryouts to select players for their teams. As I mentioned, these tryouts are typically held months before, and they give coaches a chance to evaluate players’ skills and abilities.

They’ll be evaluating your technical skills, tactical abilities, physical fitness, and mental toughness. If you’re selected for a travel team, congratulations! You’ll have the opportunity to play against some of the best local teams in your area, and to develop your skills as a player.

Potential Challenges of Travel Soccer

Here are some potential challenges that you should consider before signing up for a travel soccer team.

Time Commitment

Travel soccer requires a significant time commitment. You will likely have to attend several practices a week, as well as games on weekends.

If you play flag football, tackle football, or any other fall sport, it could be tough juggling it all. I would reach out to the soccer director and figure out if it’s doable to play another sport. If not, travel soccer should keep you busy!

Travel Demands

As the name suggests, travel soccer involves a lot of travel. You may have to travel to other cities or even other states for games and tournaments.

This can be expensive and time-consuming, especially for larger families or families who are already strapped for time.

But, since it’s a local team, carpooling is always recommended for practices and games.

Balancing School and Soccer

If a child hasn’t played a competitive sport before, it could be challenging to balance soccer and school . Most practices are in the evening so it’s important they do any homework in the small window they have after school. This will make your and their life so much easier.

To Conclude – JUST HAVE FUN

For players (and parents), it’s important to remember that soccer is a game and supposed to be fun. Try your best and have fun. It’s easy to do both!

It’s also essential to prioritize development over wins and losses. Have a long-term mindset when it comes to getting better. Very little happens in a week but a lot can happen in six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel soccer is usually more expensive than recreational soccer due to additional expenses such as travel, leagues, and tournament fees. However, the benefits of playing travel soccer include a higher level of competition and more opportunities for skill development. Ultimately, whether travel soccer is worth the extra cost depends on the player’s goals and priorities.

Travel soccer is a type of club soccer that emphasizes competitive play and requires travel to games and tournaments usually within state borders. On the other hand, club soccer is the next tier up and usually has paid coaches and more travel requirements. For this reason, club soccer costs much more than travel soccer.

The travel soccer season typically starts in the fall and spring. However, some clubs may have different schedules or offer year-round play. It’s important to check with your local club for specific season dates.

You can find travel soccer teams near you by searching for your local youth sports organization. Typically, they will have important dates and a registration form for tryouts. You can also get recommendations from other parents and coaches in the community.

Soccer-Portugal coast into Euro 2024 last-16 with 3-0 victory over Turkey

By Sam Tobin

DORTMUND, Germany (Reuters) - Bernardo Silva's first goal at a major tournament, a calamitous own goal from Samet Akaydin and a Bruno Fernandes tap-in gave Portugal a comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey on Saturday to guarantee qualification for the last 16 as Group F winners.

Silva gave Portugal the lead in the 21st minute, rifling home after Nuno Mendes' cross deflected kindly into his path before Akaydin failed to look and passed the ball beyond onrushing goalkeeper Altay Bayindir seven minutes later.

Fernandes effectively ended the contest after 56 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo -- who could have become the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history -- selflessly passed to his former Manchester United teammate to tap home.

The victory secures Portugal's progress while Turkey must avoid defeat on Wednesday to the Czech Republic, who drew 1-1 with Georgia earlier on Saturday, to be certain of qualifying for the knockout rounds.

Portugal started sharply and were unfazed by the deafening whistles from Turkey's supporters when in possession, with Ronaldo drawing an easy save from Bayindir inside two minutes.

Turkey -- who had lost all three of their previous European Championship games against Portugal without scoring -- often played out from the back and the gamble almost paid off after 20 minutes, but Pepe's last-man challenge stopped Orkun Kokcu.

Portugal scored shortly after through a quick break down the left, when Mendes played a dangerous ball across goal which Silva turned home for his first major tournament goal in his 15th game at either the World Cup or European Championship.

A defensive mix-up doubled their lead when Bayindir wandered out of his goal to collect a misplaced pass towards Ronaldo, only to watch Akaydin's backpass roll past him in slow motion.

Kerem Akturkoglu forced a great save from Diogo Costa almost immediately after, but Turkey otherwise created precious few chances.

The second half started in subdued fashion before substitute Ruben Neves played a long pass over the top, which fell to Ronaldo who laid the ball on a plate for Fernandes to score.

The game petered out even after Turkey boss Vincenzo Montella introduced teenage star Arda Guler but was marred by several pitch invaders in the last 20 minutes of the game, all of whom made a beeline for a selfie with Ronaldo.

CARMEL UNITED SOCCER CLUB

TRAVEL SOCCER PROGRAM

Carmel United offers a travel program for those players looking for a more advanced soccer experience. Our travel program is a competitive endeavor requiring a higher level of commitment both in time and financially. We hold tryouts in April or May of each year. There is a finite roster sized which means, in most cases, not every player trying out will make the team.

Our club competes in the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) which is affiliated with Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Premier-level teams participate in the NY Club Soccer League (NYCSL) which is affiliated with US Club Soccer. There are separate teams and divisions for girls and boys. Level of competition and training prepares players for high school level of play. We also stress sportsmanship, fitness, organization, team commitment and other skills the young players will keep with them the rest of their lives. Travel teams practice two times a week during the fall and spring at a facility in the Carmel/Patterson area. Practices may start any time after 5pm. During the winter there are indoor practices once/week in an indoor facility. As travel soccer requires a higher level of commitment, attendance at practices is expected.

With the exception of premier teams, games are generally scheduled Sundays between 10 AM and 5 PM. Premier teams may play on Saturday or Sunday. The fall season starts first week of September and runs until the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The spring season begins the first Sunday in April and runs until mid June. There are typically 8-10 games scheduled in the fall and 8-10 scheduled in the spring. One half of these games are played at our home fields in the Carmel area, including Carmel High School, George Fischer Middle School, Matthew Paterson Elementary School, and Patterson Veterans Memorial Park. The other half of games are played against other soccer clubs from Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester, Orange, and Ulster counties. Premier teams may travel further distances for away games (NYC, CT, Long Island, etc.)

There are no games scheduled Labor Day weekend, Columbus Day weekend, Easter, Passover, or Memorial Day weekend, but individual teams may elect to participate in tournaments those weekends. Teams may also compete in indoor tournaments and/or winter leagues sponsored by other clubs or venues. We provide our coaches with licensing and training opportunities. All travel coaches are required to complete at least a Grassroots licensing course from US Soccer. Some of our coaches have advanced licenses and/or NSCAA diplomas and/or have decades of playing and coaching experience. Some teams elect to hire professional youth trainers to train their teams. The cost for trainers and tournaments are borne by the team. Teams may do fundraising to cover some of these costs and/or they may require out-of-pocket contributions from players.

Team Formation

Travel teams will be formed and players assigned based on evaluations made at tryouts, as well as other factors. Our goal is to form competitive teams while also keeping a positive team dynamic. This is not a "sign up and play" program. Players must try out and demonstrate the skills or aptitude necessary to make the team. They must also demonstrate the commitment and personality traits expected for that particular team. Many factors are taken into consideration when selecting players, not just their current ability. If we have enough players, we will form two teams in the same age group to maximize the number of players playing Travel soccer. For developmental age groups, we will not form an “A” and “B” team as we do not feel that is in the best interest of players at younger ages (U12 and under). Instead, we will form two balanced (as possible) teams with a focus on developing all the players equally. Carmel United maintains the philosophy that players are best served by playing age-appropriate whenever possible, especially at developmental ages (U12 and under). With approval, a player may try-out for an older age group (1 year up only). However, in order to be placed on the older team, the player must score in the top five at the tryouts for the older team. Simply being the best player in their age-appropriate group does not qualify them for the older team. They must be one of the best five players in the OLDER age group to be considered for that team. This is the Club's "play-up" policy. Note: we generally do not allow this for players at developmental ages at all. In the case of a rare exception, the player would need to score in the top three to be considered. If teams are starting out with low roster numbers, players may be allowed to play up in order to allow a team to be formed. If there is no age-appropriate team, a player will be allowed to try out for the older team (1 year up only) with the understanding that if an age-appropriate group does form in the future, they will be placed on their age-appropriate team.  Players will be notified as tryouts are completed for an age group and teams are formed. Players accepted on a team must be registered within 72 hours of notification or risk losing their roster spot. New travel players are required to supply a copy of their birth certificate and a photo within one week of registration, if not provided at tryouts. Players who do not attend a scheduled tryout may forfeit their opportunity to play on a team in that gender/age group if sufficient players are available to form a team. Players not accepted on a travel team have the option to play in our Inhouse program if an appropriate age group exists.  Evaluators will not be associated with players on a team in the age group. Players should try out for their appropriate gender and age group unless instructed otherwise by their coach or the Tryout Committee. Tryouts for high school-aged teams may not adhere to the same tryout process as other travel teams in the Club. Tryouts may be organized by the individual team and evaluations may be made by the team's coaches.

Player Development Philosophy (U8-U12)

Carmel United believes strongly in Player Development. Our philosophy is: 1. Do NOT give up on players.  Every player’s development timeline is different. Some develop quickly early on and then taper off. Others develop slowly at first and then make bigger strides later. Players will develop in their time, not yours. What’s important is that players are improving and engaged.  2. Success should be measured by effort and improvement, NOT by wins and losses.  There are no standings for U8-U12 ages. Nobody wins a championship and nobody comes in last place. It’s about developing players. It doesn't matter if a team loses every game as long as the players are getting better and enjoying playing soccer. Winning will eventually come naturally by doing the right things as pertains to player development but winning should not be the priority.  3. Every player MUST receive at least half the game playing time.  No exceptions. We develop ALL our players, not just the stronger ones. This is a league mandate which is 100% Club supported. There is no reason that every player should not get half a game every game. 4. Players should NOT be positioned until at least U12 or older.  Players should be exposed to and learn every position on the field. Nobody knows where a player should be playing at these ages, even if they look good in a position right now. As players develop long-term, there will come a time when they should start to specialize but that is not at the developmental ages. This is what you should expect from Travel soccer in Carmel United and is hopefully what you will receive. If it is not what you experience, you should speak to your coach sooner rather than later.

Fall 2024/Spring 2025 Season

Tryouts for the Fall 2024/Spring 2025 season were completed in May of 2024. Some teams may still have roster spots available (most do not). If there is interest in trying out, please notify us by email at  [email protected]  to find out if there is availability. Be sure to include your name and phone number along with the player's name, birth year, and playing experience (Club, team, years, etc.) in your email.

Travel Fees

  • Full-year registration fee:  $395
  • Payment plan is available if registered by July.
  • You will receive $100 in raffle tickets at the start of the season. You can sell those tickets and keep the money which lowers your out-of-pocket cost.
  • $25 late fee may be imposed if registration is not completed in a timely manner.
  • All new players are required to purchase a full uniform kit (primary game jersey, alternate game jersey, practice jersey, shorts, and socks) at the time of registration. Cost for a complete kit is $100. Once purchased, the same uniform can be used each year as long as it still fits...unless the uniform style changes.
  • Individual travel teams may also collect additional money to cover training, tournaments, and other team-related expenses. Some (or all) of these costs may be deferred through team fundraising activities. You would need to check with your coaches or team manager for specific details.
  • There are no refunds for Travel.

What Does the Fee Cover?

  • League registration: 17-20%
  • Outdoor field space: 12-15%
  • Winter indoor practice space: 40-50%
  • Referee fees: 15-20%
  • Club overhead (includes marketing, advertising, operations, administration, field maintenance, supplies, etc.): 10-15%
  • Credit card processing fee: 3%

Coaching in our Travel Program

We are always looking for individuals to coach our Travel Players. Although playing and coaching in the past helps, it is our experience that dedication to player development as well as organization and communications skills make excellent youth soccer coaches. The most successful coaches produce players who develop a love for the game and continue with the sport long after they have played for the coach. The Club provides reimbursement for accredited coaching education. If you are interested in coaching for our Travel program,  please send an email to [email protected] . Once approved by the Club for a travel team, you must complete a few tasks before being approved and assigned to a team, including an in-person Grassroots coaching course, a background check, and a few online trainings.

Shea Langeliers hits a two-run home run to give the A's a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning vs. the Twins.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- — Shea Langeliers hit a two-run homer off Jhoan Duran in the eighth inning, rallying the Oakland Athletics to a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

Tyler Soderstrom added two hits and three RBI for the A’s, who have won three of four since a season-high nine-game losing streak. With the victory, Oakland ended its streak of 10 consecutive months with a losing record.

“That’s just kind of this group,” Langeliers said. “Most of these guys were here last year, went through that tough season. Going through something like that brings the guys closer together. We really just want to fight for each other.”

Sean Newcomb (1-0) came on in relief to face Willi Castro with two outs in the eighth. With a 1-1 count on Castro, Newcomb picked off Austin Martin to end the inning. The A's said it's the first time in team history a pitcher won without officially facing a batter.

Mason Miller came on for Oakland in the ninth and sealed the rare win for Newcomb with his 14th save.

Minnesota trailed 4-1 before Royce Lewis’ solo homer in the sixth and Castro’s go-ahead three-run shot in the seventh. It was Castro’s first home run away from Target Field in Minnesota since May 21.

“We found a way to kind of muscle back into the game,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "Willi had a big hit and we grabbed a lead in a way that we've done a few times. At home, we've done it recently like this, and we did all right. We hung in there.

“Obviously, the game kind of turned in the eighth inning.”

Even when his team was trailing late, A’s manager Mark Kotsay said his squad remained confident.

“There was still a good feeling in the dugout that we were going to win that game,” Kotsay said.

Soderstrom began the A’s comeback when he was hit by a pitch from Duran (3-3) leading off the eighth. Langeliers, who entered with the third-lowest on-base percentage in baseball, followed with a towering drive into the stands as Twins left fielder Trevor Larnach simply turned and watched.

“Obviously (Duran’s) stuff is next level,” Langeliers said. “I was just trying to shrink my zone as much as possible, get a pitch I could handle and put my ‘A’ swing on it. Against a guy like that, I have to be aggressive early.”

The Twins had to lean on their bullpen after starter Chris Paddack failed to make it through five innings for a second consecutive start. Paddack, who has one win in his last eight starts, allowed five hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings.

“He battled through the whole outing,” Baldelli said. “I would say he did his best with his stuff. His stuff was a little down today.”

The A’s had runners on base in three of the first four innings, but only one made it past second.

Soderstrom had an RBI single off Paddack in the first, then lined a two-run double off Kody Funderburk in the fifth.

Minnesota's Carlos Santana went 1 for 4 with a double in his 2,000th career major league game.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: RHP Jay Jackson was designated for assignment to clear room for Funderburk.

Athletics: OF Abraham Toro left with a hamstring injury that Kotsay indicated is likely to land him on the Injured List in the next few days. … RHP Osvaldo Bido was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. ... Rookie RHP Vinny Nittoli was designated for assignment.

A’s LHP JP Sears (4-6, 4.25 ERA) is scheduled to make his 16th start of the season Saturday. He’s the only Oakland pitcher to not miss a start this season. The Twins plan to go with RHP Bailey Ober (6-4, 4.81 ERA), who has a 1.045 OPS in five career appearances against the A’s.

Our U11-U19 program (also known as Limited Distance Travel or Intertown) places players on teams led by parent volunteer coach or coaches.   Teams will have a weeknight practice (practice night will vary by team) and compete against teams from other local clubs in Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, East Fishkill, Dover,  Hyde Park, or Pleasant Valley) on Saturday mornings (game times may vary).

When you register in the spring/summer you are registered for both the following Fall and Spring seasons.  Players will be provided with a uniform containing a team jersey, shorts and socks.

Players who play at the travel, premier, or academy level of soccer are not eligible to play in the Limited Distance Travel program regardless of the town or league in which  they play.

Game schedules will be posted on the LaGrange Soccer website under U11-U19 Program/Schedules.    Practice schedules will be provided by the coach.  Families will receive information from their team coach for the fall season in late August.   All practices and  home games will  take place at Stringham Park.  A field map of Stringham Park can be found under Field Info.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game

soccer saturday travel game

Your kids are away at sleep camp for the summer, maybe you’re a student on a school break or, lucky you, the office is closed for a few weeks. More likely, you've got a soccer jones and some vacation time to kill.

What better way to spend that time than gorging on the beautiful game live while bouncing around the US and Canada?

With the 20th MLS season approaching, MLSsoccer.com asked me to put together my itinerary for the ultimate soccer road trip. So we're going coast to coast, hitting everything from MLS to USL, the Gold Cup and the Women’s World Cup.

Should you take the plunge, it's going to be a trip to remember. Oh, and you'll get to meet some really cool people along the way. Safe travels!

Thursday, July 2 – Portland, Oregon

Portland Timbers 2 vs. Arizona United at Merlo Field

This may be an unorthodox way to begin your trip, but it’s a great opportunity to see the famous Portland soccer environment in person.

Our soft opening is the PT2 match at Merlo Field, although if you want to start early you can attend Timbers-Sounders at Providence Park on June 28. MLS-operated USL teams are a major part of the future of the sport in North America, and you'll see future MLSers on display.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game -

NEXT UP: Drive 171 miles (2 hours, 49 minutes) to Seattle

Friday, July 3 – Seattle, Washington

Seattle Sounders vs. D.C. United at CenturyLink Field

The quick drive north to Portland’s biggest rival city gives you a chance to see the largest average crowd in MLS on game day. Don’t miss any of the festivities by starting matchday at the bar with Sounders fans, then make the famous march to the stadium from Occidental Square, belt out the national anthem, and, of course, take in the match. It's the defending Supporters' Shield winner against 2015’s Eastern Conference table toppers.

NEXT UP: Drive 143 miles (2 hours, 34 minutes) to Vancouver

Sunday, July 5 – Vancouver, British Columbia

FIFA Women's World Cup Final at BC Place Stadium

Couldn’t make it to Brazil last summer? Not a problem. World Cup fever is coming to North America sooner than 2026.

The WWC is going to be a massive event this summer. With a host country boasting a historically strong national team and the world's game on display in a great time zone for TV coverage in North America, get ready for another big international party.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game -

NEXT UP: Drive 2,202 miles (33 hours) to Chicago

Thursday, July 9 – Chicago, Illinois

Gold Cup group stage: Mexico vs. TBA | TBA vs. TBA at Soldier Field

The major drive from Vancouver to Chicago is the longest of the trip, but don't worry. By the time you make it, we will probably be into the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup, so odds are you'll get your fix somewhere along the way. Plus, the journey will all be worth it to see El Tri  at Soldier Field.

Mexico fill any stadium the play in stateside, and you can be sure their group opponents (when decided) will bring plenty of support as well. Nothing inspires fans like supporting their national side, especially fans that don’t often get to see their team in person.

NEXT UP: Drive 312 miles (4 hours, 30 minutes) to St. Louis

Saturday, July 11 – St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis FC vs Richmond Kickers at St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Park

Travel to the heart of American soccer, to the city that gave us the spine of the 1950 World Cup team and so many stars since. STLFC is a brand new professional soccer team, and there's nowhere better to see them play than Scott Gallagher Soccer Park.

The stadium (under many different names) was the lifeblood of US Soccer in the 1980’s during a dark time after NASL and before MLS. It was one of the only places the USMNT could enjoy a true home-field advantage before MAPFRE Stadium was built. The matchup – against the Kickers, who were USL PRO semifinalists last season and are one of the oldest clubs in America – isn't bad either.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game -

NEXT UP: Drive 257 miles (3 hours, 47 minutes) to Kansas City

Monday, July 13 – Kansas City, Kansas

Gold Cup group stage: USMNT vs. TBA | TBA vs. TBA at Sporting Park

The USMNT will get no rest with competitions, should they qualify, the next four summers. U.S. Soccer seems to have a soft spot for Sporting Park after playing a 2014 World Cup qualifier in each round in Kansas City.

The last time they played at Sporting Park – against Jamaica in World Cup Qualifying – the crowd was phenomenal and hometown star Graham Zusi got a goal. This is another double-header, the last group-stage matchday for Group A, which should be a real treat to go along with the opportunity to check out one of the top facilities in North America.

Saturday, July 18 – Kansas City, Kansas

Sporting KC vs. Montreal Impact at Sporting Park

Stick around town and catch an MLS game with the Cauldron. This stadium/crowd/team is helping change the perception of MLS around the world, and it's a blast to catch a game at Sporting Park. Grab some BBQ and beer at the pregame tailgate, and find a way into the Boulevard Members Club during or after the game. You'll watch a team with a returning Roger Espinoza and healthy Matt Besler and Zusi face off against a new-look Impact side driven by creative maestro Ignacio Piatti.

NEXT UP: Drive 675 miles (10 hours) to Columbus

Sunday, July 19 – Columbus, Ohio

Columbus Crew SC vs. Chicago Fire at MAPFRE Stadium

It is not a road trip without one outrageous drive straight through the night. Push through it and take shifts. You won't regret it.

Crew SC boss Gregg Berhalter’s boys play some of the finest soccer in the league, and a rebuilt DP-laden Fire squad will be a fantastic test in this Midwest rivalry match. Stand with some MLS original fans in the legendary Nordecke and visit THE original soccer-specific stadium, a game-changer for the sport in the US and the home of a couple famous Dos a Cero USMNT wins.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game -

NEXT UP: Drive 529 miles (8 hours, 30 minutes) to New York City

Saturday, July 25 – Harrison, New Jersey

New York Red Bulls vs. Colorado Rapids at Red Bull Arena

This is the last leg of the trip, but don’t feel too down because you're going to end on a serious high. In the greatest city in the world, you have an opportunity that exists nowhere else in America. You can see two MLS teams play at home in one weekend and one city.

Red Bull Arena will be jumping as USMNT veteran Sacha Klejstan pulls the strings back in New Jersey where he played college ball. Facing off against a talented, young and creative Rapids team, RBA, as usual, will be electric in the heart of summer.

Sunday, July 26 – New York, New York

New York City FC vs. Orlando City SC at Yankee Stadium

What a treat to finish with the second running of the “expansion bowl,” as the two Eastern Conference newcomers face off. You'll witness the early embers of what could become a great MLS rivalry, in one of the historic stadiums in America. David Villa and Kaka will face off right before the MLS All-Star break, and both teams have the talent to be in the playoff mix in their very first season.

Ultimate Soccer Road Trip: Catch 12 games in 24 days as you go coast-to-coast following the beautiful game -

You made it! Your trip spanned two countries and more than 4,000 miles from the West to the East Coast as you consumed 12 games in 24 days at all different levels and competitions in some of the best stadiums boasting some of the best supporters' cultures in the world.

If you did it right, you'll have a cadre of new friends picked up along the way. I still talk daily to two Scots, an Englishman, Australian and Brazilian who I met in Manaus during the World Cup, and meet up with people I first encountered at the 2013 USA-Mexico WCQ in Columbus for most USMNT matches. Don’t waste the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet fellow supporters around the continent.

Do that and you'll head home with the knowledge that everyone you know will be insanely jealous. After all, you just finished the ultimate North American soccer road trip!
