The interior of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, can be seen on a Ranger-guided tour only. Tours are limited to 10 people and are typically held at least every hour, and every half hour if staffing allows, starting at 10 AM, with the last tour at 4 PM. Tour frequency all depends on the number of staff members available each day—which can fluctuate due to illness or other reasons for absence—so there is no set schedule, though every half hour is the goal during the busy summer and holiday seasons. No tours are given on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Before heading out to the park, be sure to get the current schedule on the National Park Service’s official Operating Hours and Seasons web page for the park.

There is no charge for the tour, but you must get a ticket at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park Visitor Center . Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour, so you must show up in person to get a ticket. Groups can take up to three time slots for a total of 45 people. Unless you are able to get a ticket for the very next tour, you will be assigned a tour time and must return to the Visitor Center to pick up the actual ticket a half hour before the scheduled time. After ten minutes your ticket will be given to the next available visitor.

Don’t worry if you are unable to get a ticket until later in the day, because there is plenty to do in the park. The exhibit area and the two films shown at the Visitor Center can eat up an hour, there is another exhibit area and the King Tomb at the King Center that can take up another hour, and a third hour can be spent on self-guided tours of Ebenezer Baptist Church and Fire Station No. 6 . There are also plenty of restaurants and bars on Auburn Avenue.

There are also open-house tours held on some Saturdays during select hours, and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. No tickets are required; just show up at the house. The schedule is not readily available, so call the park at (404) 331-5190 to inquire about days and times.

A tour of the birth home is the top draw of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, and with less than 200 tour spots available each day, it should come as no surprise that they “sell out” quickly during the summer and holidays. I arrived at 10 AM on a Monday in mid-June and the first tour available was at 11:30 AM. There were two dozen people in the Visitor Center at that time. I watched one of the park films at 10:30 AM, and when I came out of the theater a half hour later there must have been fifty people there. A Ranger told me tickets are usually gone by around 11 AM; it is not unusual to have a couple dozen people waiting for the Visitor Center to open at 9 AM. Therefore, if a house tour is your goal, I highly suggest being at the park when the Visitor Center opens. As with all National Parks that have attractions that require a ticket, you can never go wrong by arriving early. Be aware that during the school season that school groups can take up to three tour times, and that’s per school. Therefore, if you plan to visit during this time, be sure to call a few days ahead to check tour availability for the general public.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home is located .2 mile from the Visitor Center. There is a slight incline as you walk up Auburn Avenue, but it is an easy walk for most people. If you are unable to walk, you can be dropped off at the house, but parking is limited to street parking and may be hard to find. You can also borrow a wheelchair at the Visitor Center. The house itself is fully accessible for wheelchairs. A ramp leads to the first floor, and an elevator can take mobility-impaired guests to the second floor. However, since elevators can always break, if you have mobility issues I suggest calling the park at (404) 331-5190 to make sure it is working on the day you visit.

Tour participants must meet at the book and souvenir store located in the house next to the Birth Home. This is the main store run by the National Park Service, though there is also a small shop in the Visitor Center and a much larger store in Freedom Hall at the King Center, which is still owned by the King Family.

The National Park Service website for Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park claims the tour lasts 30 minutes, but mine went for 45 minutes. Including the five-minute walk to the house and some time to arrive early to perhaps shop for a souvenir, block off a full hour of your time for the tour.

The interior of the house is furnished as it would have been when Martin Luther King Jr. lived it in from 1929 to 1941. However, only about 25 percent of the furnishings are original because at the time the Kings had no idea that their son would become world famous and that one day a museum house would be created in his honor. Thus, as would any family, old possessions were sold or thrown away and replaced with new items. The good news is that since Martin’s parents and sister were still alive when the house museum was created, they were able to purchase furnishings and decorations similar to those that they did own. The guide will point out the various original items during the tour. No photography is allowed in the house, but you are welcome to take photos of the exterior.

HOUSE HISTORY

Birth home of Martin Luther King Jr.

Birth home of Martin Luther King Jr.

The house at 501 Auburn Avenue was built in 1895. It was purchased in 1909 by Reverend Adam Daniel Williams. His daughter, Alberta Christine, married Michael King in 1926, and the two moved in with her parents. They would go on to become the parents of three children, all of who were born in the house: Willie Christine (1927), Michael Jr. (1929), and Alfred Daniel (1930).

In 1934, Michael Sr. changed both his own name and Michael Jr.’s to Martin Luther. He claimed he had uncles named Martin and Luther and that his father wanted him to change the names. However, most people believe the name change was the result of a 1934 trip to Europe, with Germany being one of the many countries he visited. It was a time when the Nazis were first coming to power, and he became more aware of Martin Luther, the German priest who started the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s. His followers would go on to form the Lutheran church.

In 1931, Reverend Williams died, and ten years later his wife died. Shortly after this, the Kings moved to a new house at 193 Boulevard Northeast (no longer exists). Martin Luther Jr. was twelve years old at the time. However, the Auburn Avenue house remained in the family and became a rental home. After Martin Luther Jr.’s assassination in 1968, Coretta Scott, the woman he married in 1953, founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center, today known as the King Center. Part of her plan was to turn the Auburn Avenue house into a museum. The King Center took ownership of the property in 1973, and it was first opened to the public in 1975.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter created the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, though at the time the National Park Service didn’t actually own any of the sites within the park. The birth house and the King Center remained under the ownership of the King Family, Ebenezer Baptist Church was still a functioning church, and Firehouse No. 6 was still a functioning firehouse. The current National Park Service Visitor Center didn’t exist until 1996. Park Rangers did, however, take over the conducting of house tours in 1982.

In January 2018, President Donald Trump signed legislation that changed the designation of the Historic Site to Historical Park , a designation for parks that contain a number of historical buildings and / or landmarks. But that wasn’t the only change to come. The burden and cost of the upkeep on the Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home had grown too large, so the King Family turned to the National Park Service to take permanent ownership. This became a reality in November 2018 when the National Park Foundation purchased the property for a reported $1.9 million, then donated it to the National Park Service. The purchase was made possible by a donation from philanthropist Robert Smith. The National Park Service also purchased the house at 234 Sunset Avenue NW in Atlanta, the house where the Kings were living when Martin was killed in 1968. The house must be renovated, but there are plans to open it for tours.

King for Kids has a ton of primary source material available for you to view online. These make a great addition to your homeschool lessons.

His “I Have a Dream” speech is probably his most iconic. Enjoy listening to a recording of this inspirational speech that he delivered on August 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial.

One of the most historic event of that era was the march from Selma to Montgomery, AL. His speech titled “ Our God is Marching On ” is when historians believe the movement shifted from legal and political rights to economic equality.

King spoke out against the Vietnam War and was criticized because most Americans supported the effort. His speech “ Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break the Silence ” was delivered at the Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967.

On April 3, 1968 in Memphis, Dr. King delivered his “ I’ve been to the Mountaintop ” speech, which turned out to be his last. He delivered this address to sanitation workers who were striking to protest their low pay and working conditions. He emphasized the need for non-violence, but tragically he was assassinated just a few days later.

MLK’s Family Legacy

Although he died on April 4, 1968 at 39, his family carried on his work and mission. First by his wife, Coretta Scott King, until her death in 2006 and now his four kids.

Through his grown children, Martin Luther King Jr.’s spirit lives on today. Activists in their own right, they often share about the legacy of their father.

This recent article talks about Dr. King’s children and their lives. This is another write up of how his children are continuing the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

And in April of 2018, Time magazine published a wonderful article titled “ How Martin Luther King Jr.’s Children Are Carrying on His Legacy 50 Years After His Death .”

Virtual MLK Experience Project Guide

The vMLK project engages individuals and groups in the hermeneutic act of experiencing and interpreting what was, what is, and what has never been in relation to public address and civic transformation. The project features six digitally immersive and custom experiences of King’s 1960 “Fill Up the Jails” speech, including different collective and individual sound perspectives, “walk-in” and walking tour experiences, a Virtual Reality experience, a simulation experience of the sanctuary where King delivered the speech, and a historical experience emphasizing the role of the many individuals who made the movement a reality.

The vMLK project seeks to expand and enhance 1) public audiences’ knowledge of civil rights history in North Carolina in relation/juxtaposition to contemporary civic life, 2) appreciation of the scope of civic and political engagement in North Carolina and around the country during the civil rights movement, and 3) public audiences’ understanding of the transformative and affective aspects of public address in relation to King’s 1960 “A Creative Protest [Fill Up the Jails]” address. Audiences will learn, in a manner and to an extent not previously available, how King’s speech text and his delivery served to move people to do something that was unthinkable for them up to this point in history, namely, breaking the law and going to jail to establish their humanity and to gain their rights and freedom. And they are led to consider what this means in light of contemporary political, civic, and social realities.

While each exhibition component—historical experience, collective sound experience, listening experience, virtual reality experience, simulation experience, and feedback/share your creative protest —may be experienced individually in online and/or material spaces, they may also be customized a number of different ways for a transmedia experience, including a public performance, walking tour, virtual reality tour, and online exhibition. The vMLK project works with institutions to develop a unique format.

King and queen of the Netherlands pay tribute to MLK during visit to Atlanta

The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — The king and queen of the Netherlands began a four-day tour of the U.S. on Monday in Atlanta, where they paid tribute to the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and learned about the history of the church where he served as pastor.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima were also scheduled to visit a music studio in the city that is a hub for hip hop artists.

The visit — and its focus on Black cultural sites — comes less than a year after the king apologized for his country’s role in slavery and asked for forgiveness during a historic and emotional speech in Amsterdam.

At the King Center, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, greeted the king and queen and walked with them to a marble crypt containing the remains of her father and mother, Coretta Scott King, where the couple lay a wreath. Civil rights leader and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young also attended the event.

Willem-Alexander called the visit “deeply moving” for the couple and said the “drive for emancipation among people of color” was a story of “pain and anger, but also one of pride, solidarity and the steadfast belief in peace and reconciliation.”

“In the Netherlands, too, the fight against discrimination and racism continues to command our full attention,” he said, reading from prepared remarks. “Martin Luther King inspires us never to give up. His voice continues to resonate even across the Atlantic.”

The couple later met with Black students at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where they learned about the church’s role in the civil rights movement and the fight for racial justice. On Tuesday, they are scheduled to visit Savannah State University, the oldest public historically Black college or university in Georgia.

The trip also has an economic motive. In 2023, total trade between Georgia and the Netherlands was $2.9 billion, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

The king and queen met earlier Monday with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp at the state Capitol, where they and a delegation of Dutch business leaders planned to discuss economic cooperation.

They were scheduled to be on hand later for the opening of a new cold storage facility by Dutch company NewCold.

On Tuesday, they plan to visit the Port of Savannah. The trip concludes with a visit to New York on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Morning

The race for running mate.

Donald Trump has tightened his V.P. list to dependable and loyal campaigners.

Donald Trump wearing a blue suit and a red cap that says ”Make America Great Again.” He is pointing with his right hand, which is partially obscuring his face.

By Michael C. Bender

I’ve covered Donald Trump’s three presidential campaigns and his four years in the White House.

Discipline, experience and risk aversion are not traits typically associated with Donald Trump’s political brand. But his search for those values in a running mate has helped him narrow the field, for now, to a top tier of contenders, people in his orbit tell me.

Trump has an unusual amount of freedom with this choice. He believes voters will cast their ballots based on the top of the ticket, so he needn’t pick someone from a battleground state to help win it. People already know him, so he doesn’t need someone to woo a particular constituency, as Mike Pence did with evangelicals in 2016. But he worries that a running mate can create unwanted distractions. As a result, Trump has tightened his V.P. list to dependable and loyal campaigners.

Still, the search hasn’t escaped his freewheeling style. Advisers say he keeps injecting new contenders into the mix and pressuring his campaign for an announcement during the Republican Party’s convention next month. He wants a good show, preceded by lots of buzz. To generate it, his team has requested personal information and other vetting documents from a far broader list of Republicans than the few candidates he has shown the most interest in.

The top tier

Doug Burgum. The former president collects wealthy white businessmen as if they were porcelain dolls — and the North Dakota governor has amassed a fortune from building billion-dollar companies. Burgum is well versed in energy policy, which Trump has said is a Day 1 priority, and he could help persuade pro-business stalwarts frustrated by both Trump and President Biden. He’s already having an effect: Tom Siebel, a billionaire tech investor who loves Burgum, told me he wrote his first check to Trump — for $500,000 — because the North Dakotan was in the mix for the Republican ticket.

But Burgum is relatively untested on a national stage. He’ll face questions about the abortion ban he signed into law last year that does not allow for rape and incest exceptions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Marco Rubio. During the 2016 race, Trump taunted the Florida senator as “Little Marco.” But the men quietly reconciled once Trump took office. Rubio has been a close adviser on foreign policy and other issues. And Trump likes the idea of having a Spanish speaker on the ticket to sell his hard-right anti-immigration policies.

Yet Rubio hasn’t been as public as others about his desire to join the ticket. He wasn’t among the V.P. contenders who sat with Trump in a Manhattan courtroom during his trial. He’s not a fixture at Trump’s rallies. Part of the reason may be tactical: Trump is known to erupt on anyone who inches too close to his spotlight. But the approach has left Trump confused. “Does he even want the job?” Trump recently asked one Republican operative.

J.D. Vance. The senator from Ohio — a graduate of Yale Law School and a best-selling author — is the closest thing in the top tier to a fire-breathing ideologue. He ably defends Trumpism on television, knowing when to dial up the rhetoric and when to turn self-effacing. He’s raised lots of money to finance the campaign. Plenty of people around Mar-a-Lago tell me how much Trump likes Vance.

But the former president also likes people with experience. The average age of his cabinet in 2017 was 62. Vance is only 39 years old, barely above the minimum for a president (35) and roughly half Trump’s age. He’s less than two years into his first elected office.

Contingency plans

Tom Cotton. Trump often talks about finding figures from “central casting,” and the senator from Arkansas fits the mold: The 6-foot-5 Ivy League graduate is a decorated military veteran whom the former president views as one of his most effective defenders on television.

Bill Hagerty. The senator from Tennessee is making a last-minute push for consideration. He showed up at Trump fund-raisers in Alabama and California last week, for instance. It might be working. Trump has repeatedly asked his inner circle in recent days for opinions about Hagerty, who spent a career in private equity before he became Trump’s ambassador to Japan — and later won election to the Senate.

Tim Scott. Since ending his own presidential campaign in November, Scott seems to be doing all the right things. The senator from South Carolina fires up Trump crowds on the campaign trail. He highlights his close ties to big donors who haven’t yet committed. He promises to woo minority voters. But Trump expressed disappointment in Scott’s debate performance last summer.

Still in the orbit

Ben Carson. Trump keeps mentioning his former cabinet secretary as a potential running mate. But Carson was the subject of several scandals while serving as Trump’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone in Trump’s inner circle pushing for his promotion.

Elise Stefanik. Trump loved Stefanik’s brutal questioning of college presidents about antisemitism on campuses, people close to the former president said. Stefanik, 39, is the youngest person to serve in House Republican leadership and was just 30 when she was elected. There may be no harder worker on this list. But the congresswoman can seem too practiced and rehearsed for Trump, who often riffs through his speeches.

The final call

Others still nominally in contention include people like Representative Byron Donalds of Florida and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas. But the early chatter that Trump would pick a woman or a character beloved by his base seems wrong. That explains why Kari Lake, the Republican Senate candidate in Arizona, and Vivek Ramaswamy, the energetic Ohio businessman, are no longer on the list.

Instead, the advisers around Trump, many of whom I’ve known for years, said the former president had returned to his comfort zone with potential running mates who are mostly white and male. Of course, even following his own convention deadline, Trump still has time to change his mind.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
