The dune bashing aspect of the safari will last around 40 minutes after which you can enjoy a short camel ride and a spot of sandboarding. If you’d rather not take part in this then you can simply relax and soak up the landscape. There are plenty of opportunities to take photos during the safari. 

Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

As with the first tour, this safari offers a couple of customization options. Those include upgrading from a shared tour to a private tour and adding quad biking if you wish.

However, there is no inclusion for food with this excursion so ensure that you eat well prior to leaving and pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up.

There are two time durations available. However, regardless of whether you book the 4 or 6-hour tour the total drive time is 50 minutes. Both tours also include the provision to try sandboarding and take a short camel ride.

The 6-hour option (starting at 3 pm) includes the cost and time for dining on a desert BBQ dinner and additional activities within the Al Khayma Camp. Only soft drinks are provided to those who opt for the 4-hour tour (starting time at 7.45/8.45 am).

The following tours are preoccupied with showcasing the heritage, culture, nature, and wildlife of the desert and sustainable tourism. None of these excursions include dune bashing but they all offer something remarkable in its place. 

11. Heritage Desert Safari from Dubai

This safari tour in Dubai is radically different from the others. First of all, you’ll notice that your vehicle is a vintage, open-air 1950’s Land Rover rather than a modern 4X4.

As I explained, there is no dune bashing in this tour but rather the safari focuses on the heritage of desert culture and the exotic wildlife that resides in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

This is a 225 square kilometer (87.1 square miles) natural reserve which limits the number of tour operators who are permitted to organize trips here. This means that with minimal impact on the environment you can see what the region would have looked like centuries ago. In fact, another wonderful factor about this safari tour is that a contribution is made directly to the reserve when you book your place. 

After taking an informative tour through the conversation reserve you will relax at an evocatively lit Bedouin camp and immerse yourself in activities such as camel rides, henna artistry, shisha, and befriending the falcons.

Another unique feature that this tour offers is that you will learn how to prepare a local bread recipe that has been carefully handed down through the ages. The tour starts at 2.30 pm and your booking includes your dinner beneath the stars.

In addition to the wildlife safari, you will take part in an astronomy session with a professional telescope which allows you to fully comprehend the star-studded sky. The most important thing to keep in mind when booking your hotel room is the location. Dubai is huge and spread out, so you want to make sure you’re staying in an area that’s close to the sights and attractions you want to see.

Generally speaking, here are the best areas to stay in Dubai:

Deira – If you’re looking for a more traditional Arabic experience, you can’t go wrong with Deira. It’s also one of the more affordable areas in Dubai.

Bur Dubai – This is a great option if you want to be close to the action. Bur Dubai is home to many of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Palm Jumeirah – If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation, look no further than Palm Jumeirah. This artificial island is home to some of Dubai’s most exclusive hotels and resorts.

Downtown Dubai – This is the best area for those who want to be close to the city’s most popular attractions, like the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

Dubai Marina – This is a great option if you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. The Dubai Marina is home to many restaurants and bars, as well as a beautiful waterfront promenade.

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.

Should you do a Dubai desert safari?  

Totally! A Dubai desert safari is a completely unique adventure, allowing you to experience the wilds of the desert. Even if you’re only in Dubai for a long layover , it’s an activity you should consider!

Not only that, but it gives you an insight into older traditions as well as newer, exciting activities like sandboarding and dune bashing.

You may think that Dubai is all skyscrapers and artificial islands, but when you head out on a desert safari – just 45-minutes drive out of the city – the natural, wide open landscape reveals itself with dunes that seem to go on forever.

If nothing else, it’s an interesting break from the Dubai city life. You can also do a desert safari from Abu Dhabi , but the Dubai ones are usually quicker to get to.

If you really want to make the most of this unique experience, I highly recommend joining an overnight desert safari .

While dune bashing and seeing the desert in general is without a doubt a fun activity, spending a night under the stars is simply magical.

What to pack for a desert safari in Dubai

While Instagram may be flooded with photos of girls in flowing white dresses walking on top of sand dunes, that might not necessarily be the most appropriate clothing to wear in the desert.

In fact, you won’t want to be wearing the best outfits of your Dubai packing list for the desert, because you’ll get hot, sweaty and (most likely) very, very sandy.

You should opt for loose, flowing clothes that are ideally breathable, and comfortable enough to move freely in; you shouldn’t be wearing anything that’s going to make you sweat excessively.

You’ll also be in the desert, so a shawl or scarf to cover your head in the heat, as well as your mouth when you’re sandboarding or quad biking, would be a good idea.

When it comes to the colour of your clothing, I would steer clear of black or dark colours; that’s just going to soak up the sun and make you overheat. Go for light colours or white. Sunglasses are a must!

The experience begins in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Wildlife (DDCR) Visitor Centre, where a journey across themed rooms guides you through the DDCR story, highlighting the Reserve’s inhabitant wildlife, continuous development, and conservation efforts to protect local heritage and fauna.

The Cultural Hall is home to an extensive biography of the Reserve’s development, from inception in 2002 to the present day.

Accompanied by a personal guide and driver, this captivating experience allows guests to observe the reserve’s wildlife up close. Both shared and private vehicle experiences are available to guests.

Full description

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Wildlife Tour is a fully immersive introduction to the indigenous fauna and culture of the UAE. Located in the heart of the Dubai desert, the tour offers a comprehensive insight into the DDCR’s rich and bountiful wildlife and conservation efforts, with a guide-led journey across the Reserve bringing visitors closer to the richness of Emirati culture and the native wildlife of the country.

Throughout its rich history, the DDCR has welcomed sustained growth of threatened species, supported the prosperity of indigenous wildlife, and facilitated breakthrough discoveries to add further biodiversity to the wildlife of the region.

Life-sized sculptures of the Reserve’s inhabitants can be found across the Tour, from butterflies and Camel Spiders to the Arabian Oryx and Sand Fox. Models are placed along the journey through the centre to place nature at the heart of the experience.

The tour of the Visitor Centre concludes in the Adventure Room, with experiences available to book through Arabian Adventures, award-winning provider of desert safari experiences across the UAE. At the conclusion of the Visitor Center educational tour, guests can make their way to a 4x4 vehicle to tour the Reserve.

The Damning Stat That Shows How Far The DP World Tour Has Fallen

I t’s been a tumultuous few years for the DP World Tour . The Coronavirus pandemic caused widespread problems and put a significant strain on finances and sponsorship. It wasn’t able to weather the storm anywhere near as well as its American ally, the PGA Tour .

Then, as things were settling back down, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour arrived on the scene and threw the world of professional men’s golf into disarray. While the PGA Tour has undoubtedly been rocked and knocked, the DP World Tour finds itself in a far more precious position. 

It’s almost become the forgotten tour. The much-maligned ‘ strategic alliance ’ with the PGA Tour has failed to bear any obvious fruit and the circuit’s best players in 2023 are all regularly competing in America this year.

Meanwhile, the tour’s legends, the likes of Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell, remain exiled. What’s left is a collection of lesser lights and tournaments that fail to set the pulse racing. 

Keith Pelley did a decent job in his time at the helm – often dealing well with unfortunate circumstances that were out of his control – but he’s now moved on to pastures new and left Guy Kinnings to pick up the pieces.

One thing the DP World Tour’s new chief executive will be looking at with increasing concern is the strength of fields on this proud and historic professional golfing circuit.

Incredibly, outside of the Majors, it’s been 136 days since a world top-20 player has competed in a DP World Tour event. That last happened at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, some four-and-a-half months ago.

What’s also very concerning is the fact only two top-50 players have made starts on the DP World Tour since Dubai – Shane Lowry and Matthieu Pavon at the Porsche Singapore Open and Pavon at the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan. 

Of the 13 non-Major DP World Tour events to have taken place since the Dubai Desert Classic, only two of them have featured world-top 50 players. Even top-100 golfers are few and far between. 

But why is the situation so dire? Well, the aforementioned legends of the circuit are plying their trade on the LIV Golf tour, as are the likes of Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Adrain Meronk – although it’s unlikely they would have played many, or any, tournaments on the DP World Tour in the stretch from February to May anyway. 

The top-10 finishers from the 2023 DP World Tour rankings who weren’t already exempt earned PGA Tour cards for 2024, meaning we’ve not seen Ryan Fox, Bob MacIntyre, Victor Perez, Sami Valimaki and Thorbjorn Olesen since the Middle East.

What’s more, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg have one DP World Tour start between them since January.

In truth, it would be a surprise to see any of them in Europe before the Scottish Open in mid-July. The stars have deserted their home tour and only use it when it suits them. The problem is the DP World Tour has no leverage. 

If it wasn’t a requirement for European Ryder Cup players to be members of the DP World Tour – and therefore comply with the membership criteria – you wonder how many would abandon the circuit altogether. 

The tour is trapped in an unfavourable cycle. Some of its stalwarts have left and many are playing elsewhere, meaning the field rating for DPWT events is not as high as it used to be. That means fewer world ranking points are on offer, which in turn reduces the attractiveness of competing on the former European Tour. 

To give some recent examples, the field rating for 2023’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship was 153. The PGA Tour event that week was the RMS Classic – a PGA Tour Fall tournament and not traditionally one of the most prestigious. Its field rating was 217. The Dunhill Links Championship, meanwhile, had a worse rating than the Sanderson Farms Championship. 

This season, PGA Tour opposite field events – such as the Myrtle Beach Classic and the Corales Puntacana Championship – have comfortably outranked DP World Tour regulars. In ranking week eight, the Asian Tour’s International Series tournament in Oman had a higher rating than the Magical Kenya Open.

Finally, the Dubai Desert Classic – arguably a top-five event on the circuit – had a field rating of 172 compared with 323 at The American Express, a non-signature tournament on the PGA Tour. The gulf is there for all to see.

It didn’t use to be like this. The change to the world ranking process in August 2022 and the introduction of the Strokes Gained World Rating seem to have had a detrimental impact on the DP World Tour.  

In 2019, before the pandemic and the arrival of LIV Golf, events like the DP World Tour Championship, Nedbank Golf Challenge, Italian Open, Alfred Dunhill Links and BMW PGA Championship were comfortably outranking their American counterparts.

I’m not sure where the DP World Tour goes from here. The strategic alliance doesn’t seem to be yielding any tangible benefits – and has resulted in an exodus of talent to the PGA Tour – fields are getting weaker and TV audiences are declining.

In addition, very few Americans come over to play non-co-sanctioned tournaments and the top Europeans sign up for the bare minimum number of events. The DPWT can't compete financially with the PGA Tour or LIV Golf, either. 

If more top players make the move to LIV and the circuit continues to be denied world ranking points, it’s easy to envisage a scenario where the Asian Tour leapfrogs the DPWT.

To get back remotely close to where it was, top Europeans need to sacrifice their earning potential in America and return. But who’s going to turn down a $20m purse – and the world ranking point that go with it – to compete in a middling DP World Tour event? This is the problem you face when money becomes more important than history, tradition and legacy.

The only move the DP World Tour could make – having effectively given up half the year to the PGA Tour – is to raise the minimum number of events members are required to play in. That would really reveal how much the Ryder Cup means to European players. But you’d expect significant pushback if anything like that were to be mooted.

The DP World Tour is stuck in the mud. In hindsight, perhaps partnering with the Saudis would have been the better move.

Dubai Desert Classic achieves GEO Certified status for the second year running

Event’s dedication to environmental responsibility highlighted

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic (HDDC) has become GEO Certified for the second consecutive year, highlighting the event’s dedication to environmental responsibility and position as a leader in sustainable golf events.

GEO Certified, the widely regarded, credible distinction for responsible golf events is overseen by the international non-profit organisation GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, dedicated to support and recognition for sustainability and climate action in golf.

Criteria cover aspects of event staging as well as awareness-raising efforts and lasting legacies, with continual improvement points for future events an integral part of the process.

This year’s consecutive second accreditation has been awarded following continued and increased efforts to minimise the environmental impact of this prestigious DP World Tour event and oldest golf tournament in the Middle East.

Key initiatives include the wide use of solar power, extensive recycling to limit landfill waste, the 100% use of B20 biodiesel throughout the event, a park and plant initiative and reduced use paper through digital only tickets and daily magazines.

“This second successive GEO certification is a milestone moment for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic,” said Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

“Having become the first event in the Middle East and in the DP World Tour’s Rolex Series to have earned this prestigious status, this latest certification emphasises our long-term commitment to create a sustainable golf event.

“We are delighted that the Hero Dubai Desert Classic is playing a part in Dubai’s wider ambitions of building a greener city for generations to come.”

Key achievements from recent events also include:

· 80% of the area between the 11th and 15th holes powered by solar panels and wide use of solar power in the Media Centre

· Park and Plant – charge for parking on site funded the planting of three trees per car

· Achieving a remarkable milestone, the event diverted 100% of waste from landfills (up from 53% the previous year). Dulsco’s effective waste streams resulted in 25% of materials being recycled or composted.

· 5 tonnes of glass recycled – enough energy to power a laptop for 312 days

· Emirates Flights Catering sourced salad greens from Dubai’s largest vertical farm, promoting sustainable food choices.

· Free water refill points have helped divert 120,000 single-use plastic bottles from landfill since 2022

· High-quality filtered water dispensers provided by Liquid of Life and Al Laith minimised single-use plastic

· 100% B20 biodiesel used throughout the event, supporting Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 target of using 75% clean energy

· World’s finest golfers transported by an expanded fleet of BMW electric vehicles

· Credibly offset unavoidable emissions via the Rolex Series portfolio with the Gold Standard, supporting the Central Mozambique safe water programme, alongside local Mangrove ecosystem restoration project

· The Sustainability Corner in Tournament Town hosted environmental activities for all ages, including an Urban Farming workshop

· Digital ticketing and programme to reduce paper waste

· Supported Heroes of Hope, introducing people of determination to golf via organised clinics with the Academy at Emirates Golf Club

· Event partner Aggreko won ‘best sustainability initiative’ award for its involvement in HDDC 2022 and 2023 at Middle East Event Awards June 2023

Last month, the HDDC completed planting 1,750 mangrove trees at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, as part of sustainable initiatives for next January’s tournament. The ‘Park and Plant’ scheme was funded by visitor parking fees to help offset the tournament’s carbon emissions.

Dubai, one of the seven emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates, is situated on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. PGA TOUR Americas members Joey Vrzich, Frederik Kjettrup qualify for 2024 U.S. Open

PINEHURST, North Carolina – PGA TOUR Americas members Joey Vrzich and Frederik Kjettrup are set to compete in the 2024 U.S. Open (June 13-16) at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (Course No. 2) after securing spots at their Final Qualifying sites in Bend, Oregon and Alpharetta, Georgia, respectively. This will be each player’s first appearance in a major championship.

Vrzich is set to make his second start on TOUR, as the 25-year-old made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open on a sponsor exemption. Since then, Vrzich earned exempt membership into the inaugural PGA TOUR Americas season and recently ended the Tour’s Latin America Swing as 21st in the Fortinet Cup. His season, thus far, has been highlighted by five made cuts and three top-25s, with his best finish being tied for third at the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club.

Vrzich turned professional in 2022 after spending most of his collegiate career at Pepperdine University, where he recorded 11 top-10 finishes and ranked third in all-time scoring average. The California native played collegiately for two seasons at the University of Nevada-Reno before transferring to Pepperdine after his sophomore season. Following graduation, Vrzich earned membership to PGA TOUR Canada via Q-School and spent two seasons on the Tour before it was merged into PGA TOUR Americas.

Recent Florida State alum Kjettrup, who finished No. 8 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking, qualified for the U.S. Open with back-to-back 66s on Monday. A 12-under par total was enough for Kjettrup to secure one of three qualifying spots at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Denmark native earned exempt PGA TOUR Americas membership and conditional Korn Ferry Tour status as a result of finishing Nos. 6-10 in PGA TOUR University.

The 24-year-old finished inside the top 10 five times his senior year and was a three-time champion in his four collegiate seasons at Florida State (2022 All-American Intercollegiate, 2023 Watersound Invitational, 2024 ACC Championship). He has made two appearances on the DP World Tour, with his debut at the 2023 Made in HimmerLand being his best showing. He finished tied for 24th and was the only amateur to make the cut. Kjettrup’s second appearance was a sponsor exemption into the 2024 Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Final Qualifying also produced a list of alternates, which includes four PGA TOUR Americas members: Blake Tomlinson, Maxwell Moldovan, Thomas Ponder and Ollie Osborne. Tomlinson and Osborne are exempt PGA TOUR Americas members after finishing inside the top 60 in the Latin America Swing, Moldovan finished No. 20 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking and Ponder earned medalist honors at PGA TOUR Americas Q-School to achieve membership for the North America Swing.
